Samsung's piano-black LN-S3251D LCD combines high-styled looks with high-definition picture quality. The 32" screen delivers enough visual impact for a modest home theater, and the compact size and light weight make this an outstanding bedroom TV.

The LN-S3251D is a good indicator of how fast LCD picture quality is improving. If you've looked at LCD TVs before, you'll especially notice how much better contrast and black level are. This is about as black as black gets on an LCD. Colors are both more vibrant and more subtle thanks to advanced video processing. Instead of being limited to the more typical 256 shades of red, green, or blue, this TV can produce 1,024 shades of each color so that everything from skin tones to scenery looks more real.

The back-panel "jack pack" includes several inputs for high-resolution sources, including HD-compatible component video. For future-readiness, there's not one but two HDMI inputs for use with the growing number of HD satellite receivers and "upconverting" DVD players that use this digital connection. The LN-S3251D is a dual-mode display, so you can connect your computer, too. And one other cool feature is Samsung's Game Mode, which pumps up the picture and sound energy for more engaging gaming.

Execellent HDTV!

Jeff from Kansas City on 7/20/2006

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is my first HDTV, and bought it to replace a 12-year old 27" Toshiba CRT in my bedroom. I've got it connected to a Comcast DCT-6200 HDTV STB with a DVI->HDMI cable. The PQ is stunning - especially on the HDTV channels. I can't wait for football season to start watching my Chiefs play in full HDTV glory! (Next best thing to being at Arrowhead!) I've also got a Sony upconverting DVD player (DVP-NC85H) attached via an HDMI cable, and the PQ is much better than a standard DVD player. The upconversion really ups the PQ quite a bit. The speakers are OK, powerful enough for the bedroom, but I think I'll purchase a small home theatre audio system to get the full benefit of 5.1 digital audio.<BR><BR>There's only one downside: watching TV on our home theater system in the family room (53" Sony non-HD rear projection TV) now falls flat compared to the Samsung!

Samsung LCD, Good TV!

Heath from Littleton, CO on 7/4/2006

I bought this Samsung LN-S3251D LCD TV to replace a 19 inch CRT computer monitor. It is able to do so with the RGB connection. I also needed a TV as well. In the store, this Samsung LN-S3251D looked better than other TVs. It was brighter, with a clean and crisp looking display. It had very little choppy blocks too. The contrast rating was higher than a lot of comparable TVs. I am a big fan of plasmas. But I wanted to be able to play games which plasmas are not known for. I was not going to consider projection since I am in an apartment.<BR><BR>I also bought a small Terk antenna for HDTV. I only get one HDTV channel in the apartment. At least it is FOX. Baseball, NASCAR, movies and FOX shows play on this one channel. They take up the whole 16:9. The colors are outstanding. Even at a few feet close to the TV, very little detail loss is noticed. I can not wait for football to start. My old SONY DVD player is a decent match with this unit. It does not look as good as the FOX HDTV channel. But it is still a better quality over standard def.<BR><BR>Tivo and standard def cable are good. Sometimes I have to put it on 4:3 to make way. That means 3 inch of bars on each side. Just like the setting I use for the computer monitor. No worries though. LCD is not prone to burn in. I would like more HDTV channels. But I refuse to pay cable for their few HD channels at cable costs.<BR><BR>I wish I had the ability to have a dish. I would definitely go that route. I do not have southern sky access. One dish co has 23-25 HDTV channels. The price is just a little more than what I pay for regular cable. Overall, this is a wonderful TV. I would make the buy again.

The Holy Grail of LCD's

Firebird from Culpeper, VA on 6/18/2006

Before puchasing this tv I had my xbox 360 connected to a High Def 30" CRT. And it looked very good, but I didnt know just how good HD could look until I hooked up my new Samsung.I absolutely love this tv, The picture is breathtaking colors are so deep and rich it takes your movies and games to a whole new level! The blacks that this tv can produce are so deep it's just amazing, and I get zero pixel lag when playing fast paced racing games, thanks to the 8ms response time it's awesome!. After seeing this tv I feel that LCD is the future and Samsung is the leader!

Very nice looking picture

vincent from austin, texas on 6/1/2006

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great looking picture - very bright and clear. first saw it a retail store along with a bunch of other 32 inch lcd sets. it blew them all away, including much higher priced Sony. However, can't go with 5 stars because the first set i got would power itself off every 3 minutes when watching the internal HD tuner. Crutchfield swapped it out at no charge on the first call and the replacement one has been great!

Great Mid-Sized LCD from Peoria, IL on 5/8/2006

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I chose this TV after looking at and reviewing 20 other 32" LCD's. The picture quality is gorgeous, Brightness, contrast both good. The look of the TV cannot be understated, this is THE coolest looking LCD on the market.<BR><BR>2 Things that keep it from being 5 stars:<BR>1.) The Remote is laid out poorly (too long with the channel numbers on top, and the enter key on the bottom, requiring 2 hands to change a channel)<BR>2.) When turning the unit on, it takes 7-8 seconds to "Power Up", and thats annoying when you just want to turn it on and set your channel quickly.

Inputs and Outputs Notes

HDTV (ATSC) Tuner: The LN-S3251D has a built-in over-the-air HDTV (ATSC) tuner, so you don't have to purchase a separate digital set-top box to receive and decode over-the-air HDTV/SDTV signals.

Display Resolution: The display has a resolution of 1366 x 768. The unit will accept 1080i, 720p, 480i and 480p signals, and has a built-in image "scaler" to handle a variety of digital and analog audio/video sources. The "scaler" converts the signals from all video sources to match the LCD panel's native 768p resolution.

High Contrast Ratio: The contrast ratio of this TV is 4000:1, which gives you brilliant brightness and contrast for superior picture and detail from both PC and TV images.

Digital Natural Image Engine (DNIe): Samsung's exclusive Digital Natural Image engine dramatically improves the picture by enhancing the contrast, detail, white balance and reduces noise.

10-bit Processing: Samsung's 10-bit processing method produces 12.8 billion lifelike colors to ensure a more natural and vivid picture and aids in video signal processing of analog sources.

Automatic Picture Settings: You can choose one of the following picture settings, each input stores its own setting:

  • Standard: Resets the standard factory settings
  • Dynamic: For viewing the TV during the day, or when there is bright light in the room
  • Movie: For viewing the TV in low light
  • Custom: Allows you to adjust and store the following settings: contrast, brightness, sharpness, color, tint, and color tone

Enhanced Game Mode: The Game mode enhances dark areas, sharpens the picture, speeds up the image processing response, and enhances the sounds of your games.

Picture Sizes: You can choose one of the following picture sizes:

  • 16:9: Sets the picture to 16:9 wide mode

  • Zoom 1: Magnifies the size of the picture and allows you to move the enlarged picture using the arrows on the remote

  • Zoom 2: Magnifies the size of the picture more than Zoom 1 and allows you to move the enlarged picture using the arrows on the remote

  • 4:3: Sets the picture to 4:3 normal mode, with black bars on both sides

Input Source Names: You can assign a name for the component connected to each of the inputs. When input naming is completed, you will no longer have to remember which component is connected to each input when selecting a source to watch.

Channel Labels: Each analog channel programmed into memory can be labeled with a name up to 5 characters. Digital channels names are already assigned and cannot be edited.

Favorite Channel: You can create a list of your favorite channels and recall the list using the FAV.CH button on the remote.

PC-Capable: This unit has a 15-pin D-Sub (RGB) input that allows you to use it as a high-resolution computer monitor. The TV can be set to automatically adjust to the video signals received, or you can use the setup menu to adjust the screen quality and position. No cables are supplied for connecting the TV to a PC.

Picture-In-Picture (PIP): The Picture-In-Picture feature allows you to watch two video sources (TV, VCR, DVD) simultaneously. The TV has only one tuner, so you cannot watch two TV channels at the same time. There are three PIP views: Double (side-by-side split screens and each screen has a 4:3 aspect ratio), Double Wide (side-by-side split screens and each screen has a 16:9 aspect ratio), or standard picture-in-picture (a small window inside the full screen). In the standard picture-in-picture mode, the inset PIP window can be moved to any of the screen's four corners. PIP will not work when the V-chip is in use.

Picture Freeze: This feature allows you to freeze an image on the screen. This feature can only be activated from the remote control. When you freeze the picture the audio continues normally.

Digital Signal Strength Meter: The digital signal strength meter can be used to help you find the antenna position that delivers the highest HDTV digital signal strength.

Analog Channel Fine Tuning: The fine tuning feature allows you to manually adjust analog channels for optimal reception. A separate fine tuning setting may be put into the TV's memory for each analog channel.

Low Noise Amplifier (LNA): When the TV's antenna setting is on "Air," instead of "Cable," sometimes reception can be improved by boosting the incoming signal using the LNA function. A separate LNA setting may be put into the TV's memory for each channel.

Auto Volume: Auto volume automatically adjusts the volume of the desired channel, lowering the sound output when the modulation signal is high or raising the sound output when the modulation signal is low. This reduces the difference in volume when changing channels.

Digital Noise Reduction: If the broadcast signal received by your TV is weak, you can activate the Digital Noise Reduction feature to help reduce any static and ghosting that may appear on the screen.

Automatic Sound Settings: You can choose from the following sound settings:

  • Standard: Resets the standard factory settings

  • Music: For watching music videos and concerts

  • Movie: For watching movies

  • Speech: For watching a show that is mostly dialogue

  • Custom: Allows you to adjust the 5-band EQ, which includes the following frequencies: 100 Hz, 300 Hz, 1 kHz, 3 kHz, and 10 kHz

  • SRS TruSurround XT: TruSurround is a patented SRS technology that solves the problem of playing 5.1 multi-channel content using only two speakers. TruSurround delivers a compelling, virtual surround sound experience through the two speaker internal playback system. It is fully compatible with all multi-channel formats.

Function Help: With the function help feature turned on, each time you highlight a function in the menu, a brief description of the function is also displayed.

Sleep Timer: The sleep timer switches the television off after a specified amount of time. The sleep timer can be set to 30, 60, 90, 120, 150, or 180 minutes.

On/Off Timer: The On/Off timer allows you to program the television to turn itself on and off by selecting a specific on time and a specific off time. You also choose the On Timer's channel and Volume. The on and off timers work independently of one another.

On/Off Melody: A unique melody plays when the TV is turned on and off. You can turn this feature off if you prefer.

iPod Compatible: With an optional iPod cable box, you can connect your iPod to the LN-S3251D. Once the iPod is connected, you can control the iPod using the TV remote control and onscreen menu. The controls on the iPod are disabled.

Detachable Stand: The LN-S3251D comes with a table-top stand for easy placement on top of a counter or table. On the stand, the TV can swivel 20° in either direction.

Wall Mounting Option: The table-top stand can be removed so the TV can be wall mounted using an optional wall-mount bracket.

VESA Mounting Bracket Standard: The TV also has 4 mounting holes on the back for an aftermarket wall-mount bracket. The spacing of the mounting holes is VESA 200mm (w) x 200mm (h), in accordance with the industry standards set by the Video Electronics Standards Association. The mounting holes accommodate M6 screws.

Multibrand Remote: The supplied remote is pre-programmed to operate this unit and a number of functions on other brands of components, including VCRs, cable boxes, DVD players, and set top boxes.

Inputs and Outputs Notes

HDMI/DVI Inputs: This TV has left and right RCA audio jacks and two HDMI terminals. The HDMI jacks can accommodate a copy-protected digital connection (HDCP) to other devices that have compatible interfaces. The HDMI jacks are compliant with the EIA/CEA-861/861B standard and is not intended for use with personal computers. If you want to connect a DVI-compatible device, you will need an HDMI-to-DVI adapter cable. Since DVI does not carry audio signals, the stereo audio input is provided for the HDMI input. PC: This input consists of a stereo mini-jack and an analog RGB (D-Sub 15-pin) jack. This jack allows you to connect a personal computer with a D-Sub 15-pin output. When using the RGB (D-Sub 15-pin) jack, you must use the PC Audio input for your audio connection.

Component Video Input: The component video input will accept 1080i, 720p, 480p and 480i signals.

Headphone: There is a 3.5mm headphone mini-jack on the right side of the TV.
