Our take on the Samsung LN-S4696D

For their top-of-the-line "96-Series" HDTVs, Samsung really focuses on the "three Cs" of picture quality: clarity, color and contrast. The 46" LN-S4696D has full 1920 x 1080-pixel resolution — that's nearly twice as many pixels as typical 1366 x 768 LCD TVs. 1080p is a pixel-perfect match for most HDTV broadcasts, as well as the new high-definition disc formats: HD DVD and Blu-ray.

Thanks to advances in LCD panel and backlight design, you'll see picture contrast, black level and color accuracy that are now much closer to what good plasma TVs deliver. The 6000:1 dynamic contrast ratio spec is one of the highest we've seen. And Samsung's "wide color gamut" backlight helps the LN-S4696D reproduce 92% of the broadcast TV color range (compared to only about 72% for conventional LCDs and 76% for tube TVs).

The "Digital Cable Ready" LN-S4696D can receive over-the-air and cable HDTV programs without the need for a separate tuner box (to make full use of the built-in cable tuner, ask your service provider about a CableCARD). There are plenty of inputs for your other video gear, including digital HDMI and IEEE 1394, which provide flawless picture quality and offer the ease of single-cable hookup.

This is a dual-mode display, so your computer can join the party, too. And the gamer in your household will love the enhanced Game Mode. Samsung consulted with Microsoft engineers to develop a set of picture and sound enhancements that maximize the gaming experience.

Extremely Happy

Brian from Reston, VA on 3/28/2007

Like many of the reviewers here, I had researched several TV's before deciding on the Samsung LN-S4696D.<BR>I live two hours away from the Crutchfield retail locations so I was able to persuade my other half into going for a drive into the valley on a beautiful Sunday afternoon. :)<BR><BR>I purchased this TV along with the SoundMatters HD sound system and a Logitech 880 universal remote. The picture on the TV is excellent! THe room that it is in does not get much light so under the default settings there was an issue with shadows on faces of people not looking great. The whites faded and it almost looked cartoon like on one side of the persons face. I set the color settings to &quot;Movie&quot; and that took care of the issue by softening everything. In a dark room I suppose a plasma would have been a good option as well.<BR><BR>I also purchsed the HDTV tuning CD. I did not find this to be of any help really but at least I got peice of mind from this $30 investment.<BR><BR>Overall, I am very happy with this TV and all of it's inputs. The SoundMatters HD sound system is perfect for anyone like myself who does not want to run wires through walls. Also I live in a townhouse so I do not really need a massive 7.1 surround system - I am sure my neighbors would not appreciate it. The Logitech 880 remote is awesome as well - highly recommended. The service at the retail store was exceptional.

Great TV!

All About This GREAT Company

Carl from New Orleans, LA on 2/18/2007

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Terrific Product but more impressive is the company &quot;Crutchfield&quot;. If you are only interested in saving a few extra dollars, go ahead and choose another company. But, you'll regret it! Got a product problem? Crutchfield solves it. Every person in this organization has authority to SOLVE problems, should they develop, with equipment you purchase directly from them. It's like you are speaking and dealing with Bill Crutchfield himself. I spoke with Stu. Great customer service, knowledge of the product and suggestions to make our enjoyment of this product care free and without complications. We are purchasing the Samsung LNS4696D and Samsung LNS5296D from Crutchfield and we're doing it without one bit of hesitation.

Settings for perfect movie viewing...

Mike from Bloomington, IL on 2/1/2007

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

A perfect 10 on the "WOW" factor. It looks fantastic on my wall but if you plan to hang it on the wall, you'll need an extension cord because the power cord is too short. <BR><BR>For the video test, I connected it to my PS3 (HDMI through AV receiver) and watched the BluRay version of Mi:III. More "WOW" factor! The settings out of the box are terrible but now I have a perfect 1080P picture. I recommend the following for viewing movies in a dark room and it made a HUGE improvement:<BR><BR>Picture menu<BR>Picture Mode: Movie<BR>Contrast: 93 <BR>Brightness: 59<BR>Sharpness: 0<BR>Color: 35<BR>Tint: 50G/50R<BR>Color tone: Warm2<BR>Digital NR: Off<BR>DNIe: Off <BR>Setup menu<BR>Game mode: Off<BR>Color weakness: Off<BR>Energy saving: High (I prefer Medium)<BR><BR>I'm very pleased with the TV and Crutchfield.

Samsung vs Sharp

Tom from Ketucky on 1/27/2007

Bought Sharp Aquos 52&quot; LCD 1080p. Stay away from it! Horrible, poor quality image. It never really looked right no matter how much tweaking we did.Could never get anything near a natural skin tone. I was watching aliens for a week. I was crushed. Also had some issues with dimming when scenes were dark. Sent it back and got the Samsung 46&quot;. Now all I want to do is watch it day and night. Fantastic bright, crisp, high contrast image. Looks great regardless of signal/source. Crutchfield took great care of us receiving the Sharp set back and getting the Samsung out to us (delivery company was not really run by the sharpest tools in the shed but that's not really crutchfield's fault and likely just a local issue).

Great TV for a great price

Josh from Ft. Bragg, NC on 1/21/2007

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this tv after shopping around various sites. I spent a bit of time learning about HDTV and the various options available and LCD seemed to be what would give me the best bang for my buck. <BR><BR>This TV gives me all the options I want, USB connection, Firewire, Dual HDMI, native 1080p inputs, PC Input, Cablecard, you name it. The only thing it doesnt have is PoP which isnt that big of a deal being that I dont use PiP or PoP very often on my current TV. <BR><BR>This TV's quality is superb. The HD pictures are awesome, especially with my upconverting HD DVD Player (HIGHLY RECOMMENDED BY THE WAY, IF YOU CAN AFFORD IT). The standard definition cable looks OK if you use the 16:9 ratio, a bit of grain, however, switching to 4:3 solves this issue.<BR><BR>For the buck, you wont find a better TV. It came very nicely packaged with very clear and easy to use instructions. It mounted beautifully to my Sanus PFFP2B stand (Again, highly recommended, very high quality parts). <BR><BR>About the only negative thing I can think of is that I find myself developing OCD cleaning the bezel and screen with the included cloth!<BR><BR>Buy this TV, you wont regret it

Excellent HDTV

Ted from Durham, NC on 1/13/2007

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a great HDTV for the money. Skin tones especially are much better than I expected from an LCD. Blacks are deep and mura free. SD looks ok with the right settings which is rare on LCDs. I am definitely glad I got this set given all the problems the Sonys with the same panels are having.

Great LCD TV

Steve from Roswell, GA on 1/8/2007

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was able to stop by the Crutchfield store in Charlottesville to check out this TV prior to deciding to buy it. The salesman was very helpful and I was impressed he gave me a number of options in different price ranges and was not at all pushy towards buying one class/price range TV over another.<BR><BR>My family and I are very pleased thus far with this TV. Great picture and features. Hookup and wall mounting were both straightforward. We are using component video cables for now, switching everything by an Onkyo A/V receiver that does not have HDMI. HDTV through our cable provider is excellent and standard DVD's (no HD DVD or Blu Ray yet) are nice as well. Standard def TV (most of what is still broadcast) is OK, but you can get it to look decent if you use the 4:3 aspect ratio.<BR><BR>Samsung has done a good job of keeping the plenitude of options and stuff easily available from the remote and on screen menuing system.<BR><BR>I did purchase the monster calibration DVD and it is helpful, although the format is a bit cheesy. Definitely worth $30 for a TV in this price range.<BR><BR>We considered the more expensive 46&quot; Sony XBR2 model, but I honestly don't see a $700 better picture when I look at it. Yes, the Sony is a little nicer, but only a little.<BR><BR>Also, Crutchfield once again did a great job with service and delivery.

Excellent Display

Michael from Virginia Beach, Virginia on 12/2/2006

I upgraded to this television from a Sony 42" 720p RPTV. The picture on this TV is phenomenal. There is a visible difference between 720p and 1080p on a television this size. The picture is very sharp and the contrast - black level - is striking. Both XBox 360 graphics and HD DVD movies look improved on this set. Everything just looks "more 3-D." <BR><BR>My only complaint is that you are unable to use zoom if you're using 1080i through HDMI. For example, when I watch a HD DVD from my Toshiba HD-A1, I cannot get rid of the black bars by zooming in. However, I could do that with my previous Sony. Also, while I enjoy the styling of this set, the glossy black finish attract fingerprints and dust and can be a little distracting in a bright room since the light reflects so well off the frame. <BR><BR>Overall, though, this 1080p flat panel looks great!

Channel Labels: Each analog channel programmed into memory can be labeled with a name up to 5 characters. Digital channels names are already assigned and cannot be edited.

Favorite Channel: You can create a list of your favorite channels and recall the list using the FAV.CH button on the remote.

No cables are supplied for connecting the TV to a PC.

Picture-In-Picture (PIP): The Picture-In-Picture feature allows you to watch two video sources (TV, VCR, DVD) simultaneously. The TV has only one tuner, so you cannot watch two TV channels at the same time. There are three PIP views: Double (side-by-side split screens and each screen has a 4:3 aspect ratio), Double Wide (side-by-side split screens and each screen has a 16:9 aspect ratio), or standard picture-in-picture (a small window inside the full screen). In the standard picture-in-picture mode, the inset PIP window can be moved to any of the screen's four corners. PIP will not work when the V-chip is in use.

Picture Freeze: This feature allows you to freeze an image on the screen. This feature can only be activated from the remote control. When you freeze the picture the audio continues normally.

Digital Signal Strength Meter: The digital signal strength meter can be used to help you find the antenna position that delivers the highest HDTV digital signal strength.

Analog Channel Fine Tuning: The fine tuning feature allows you to manually adjust analog channels for optimal reception. A separate fine tuning setting may be put into the TV's memory for each analog channel.

Low Noise Amplifier (LNA): When the TV's antenna setting is on "Air," instead of "Cable," sometimes reception can be improved by boosting the incoming signal using the LNA function. A separate LNA setting may be put into the TV's memory for each channel.

Auto Volume: Auto volume automatically adjusts the volume of the desired channel, lowering the sound output when the modulation signal is high or raising the sound output when the modulation signal is low. This reduces the difference in volume when changing channels.

Digital Noise Reduction: If the broadcast signal received by your TV is weak, you can activate the Digital Noise Reduction feature to help reduce any static and ghosting that may appear on the screen.

Automatic Sound Settings: You can choose from the following sound settings:

  • Standard: Resets the standard factory settings

  • Music: For watching music videos and concerts

  • Speech: For watching a show that is mostly dialogue

  • Custom: Allows you to adjust the 5-band EQ, which includes the following frequencies: 100 Hz, 300 Hz, 1 kHz, 3 kHz, and 10 kHz

  • SRS TruSurround XT: TruSurround is a patented SRS technology that solves the problem of playing 5.1 multi-channel content using only two speakers. TruSurround delivers a compelling, virtual surround sound experience through the two speaker internal playback system. It is fully compatible with all multi-channel formats.

Function Help: With the function help feature turned on, each time you highlight a function in the menu, a brief description of the function is also displayed.

Sleep Timer: The sleep timer switches the television off after a specified amount of time. The sleep timer can be set to 30, 60, 90, 120, 150, or 180 minutes.

On/Off Timer: The On/Off timer allows you to program the television to turn itself on and off by selecting a specific on time and a specific off time. You also choose the On Timer's channel and Volume. The on and off timers work independently of one another.

On/Off Melody: A unique melody plays when the TV is turned on and off. You can turn this feature off if you prefer.
