Going for classic

What do you get when you combine portability, world-class hybrid autofocus, Wi-Fi® features like remote monitoring and control, and the ability to host a bevy of versatile lenses? We have to be talking about the Samsung NX300 hybrid digital camera. Starting from its retro-inspired two-tone design and its uncluttered, touch-enabled control interface, the NX300 serves notice it just might be aspiring to become a classic.

Options under glass

This camera comes with a versatile and reliable 20-50mm 2.5X zoom lens, which is perfect for day-to-day shooting opportunities. But should you wish to explore a few creative options, a selection of optional "pancake" style lenses make it possible to change this camera's artistic profile while still keeping it (and your other lenses) in a coat pocket. And when you want a lens with a bit more reach or specialized skills, a number of meticulously designed standard size ones are available for the NX300 as well. Most of Samsung's NX-compatible lenses feature their innovative "i-Function" one-button technology, which enables you to access many manual and automatic settings directly from the lens — often with a simple twist. And one lens for the NX-series — the 45mm 2D/3D lens — allows you to record true 3D stills and movies with just one lens, for later enjoyment on a 3D-capable HDTV.

Be spontaneous

Good glass is nothing without a proper system to bring out its best features, however. A camera and lens work together to acquire and track focus, and the ability to do this efficiently means more of your shots will be keepers. That's why the NX300's large, 20.3-megapixel APS-C sensor is paired with Samsung's advanced hybrid autofocus system. The camera uses the best aspects of both contrast-detection and phase-detection focusing strategies in order to achieve a spontaneous shooting experience. You won't have to worry about policing your camera's focus, so you can concentrate on the artistic aspects of documenting the moment.

Share your vision with the world

The NX300's built-in dual-band Wi-Fi hooks up with your compatible smartphone, tablet, or PC in seconds with an available free downloadable app. And when you press the dedicated Direct Link key on the top of the camera, you can easily and quickly upload files to social or sharing online communities — or back them up in the cloud — directly from the camera.

Speed demon

In addition to its lightning-quick autofocus, the NX300 has other speedy attributes. It shoots detailed full-resolution stills at a smoking 8.6 frames per second in continuous mode, and the shutter speed maxes out at a hummingbird-freezing 1/6,000th of a second.

1080/60P video

And let's not forget video, because Samsung didn't: the NX300 shoots at a full 1080/60p resolution, so your shots will feature creamy, smooth motion and dynamic action. A mini HDMI output allows you to view your captures on compatible HDTVs, using an optional cable.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

After much research I decided to try the NX300 and Nikon J3. Both have very fast AF using phase detection, which makes them very effective to carry for point-and-shoot. Also yields better performance for videos. Both cameras have very good build quality - the Samsung body is very sturdy and attractive, while the Nikon is more of a refined precision instrument. Nikon 1 lenses feel better-constructed - they have smoother action with enough resistance and the rubber or metal zoom rings are nice. The Samsung 20-50mm lens feels very light and loose, which is stark contrast to the NX300 body. Although, that does help with the carrying weight and the balance while shooting. WHAT MATTERS MOST - the camera body of the NX300 is very comfortable to hold. The casing features built-in contoured and textured grip on the front plus has a thumb grip on the back. This gives a very confident feel and hold with just one hand. The button placement is very good - can access without contorting even just picking it up the first time, and not pressing things I don't mean to. I like the raised shutter button, it has a good feel and easy to find. The Nikon J3's top buttons are all flush which looks amazing but less easy to use. As an inexperienced photographer, I find the touchscreen to be efficient and enjoyable interface for manual adjustments. I expect once more familiar I would use the iFn control as well. Screen is very bright and articulation feels solid, like it will last.

Pros: Built-in grip is very comfortable and effective Full APS-C sensor with great color ratings Fast phase detection AF Touchscreen is bright and easy to use Standard flash mount for upgrades VERY low-profile basic flash included Great features throughout Wifi built in saves $$ - use smartphone as viewfinder! Charges through USB (don't have to pull the battery out every time) * also means it won't run down battery when hooked to PC

Cons: 20-50 lens feels a bit light and loose - big contrast to feel of camera body wish it did slow-motion videos like the J3 lenses seem a little pricey

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I wanted a camera that was higher quality than our compact Panasonic zoom camera. Years ago I had pretty nice SLR cameras but this is the first digital camera with detachable lens that I've owned. I've had the Samsung NX300 with 20-50 mm zoom lens for a few days and so far I really like it for the price I paid. I've tried shots indoors with and without the included flash and the color quality is much better than our compact camera. The light sensitivity is much higher allowing fast shutter speeds in low light. The menu seems straight forward. I tried out the built in wifi and emailed a couple of pictures to myself without a problem. The detachable flash seems to work well as does the touch screen. I got this camera as an open box special - the camera was unblemished although the CDs that came with it had some scratches. They loaded just fine in my computer though. When first turning on the camera the electronics were not functioning properly and I thought it might be broken even after making sure the battery was fully charged. In particular the menu buttons and touch screen weren't working as expected and the camera wouldn't power off. After plugging the camera into my computer and downloading the latest firmware (which was very straightforward) it has worked fine ever since. I'm still not completely sure what the initial problem was. Overall for an amateur such as myself I really like this camera. I've not begun to explore all the functionality of this camera.

Pros: Great price, high quality optics, wifi, included flash, 20.3 megapixals, burst mode 10 frames/s

Cons: Initial problems out of the box.

Best Samsung NX Mirrorless Hybrid to Date!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Having owned the NX200, then the NX210, I was obviously interested in the NX300. Unlike my NX200->210 transition, which was basically a WiFi only upgrade, the NX300 is a totally revamped beast and the changes are GREAT. From the faster ISO settings to the greatly improved wireless sharing performance, the NX300 has everything I want. Although the included 20-50mm lens is a great everyday compact lens that takes excellent photos, I like to use the slightly higher end 18-55mm from my NX210 along with the Samsung 50-200mm (both offer OIS) I purchased separately. All I can say is WOW - excellent performance on top of features! At first, I thought the use of the Samsung SmartCamera software would be more of a novelty, but I found the remote viewfinder and shutter trigger link via my Samsung Note-II smartphone to be a very cool and functional tool for elevated monopod shots. Having the adjustable LCD touch panel on the camera is just icing on the cake. Likewise, transferring photos via the NFC or standard 802.11 was smooth and surprisingly faster than expected. I also found the new embedded micro-USB based battery charging feature to be an improvement over relying on a dedicated external battery charger. I could go on, but the button line is I am very happy with my purchase. The picture quality can go up against many solutions costing twice the price and the Samsung offers some features you simply cannot find is other cameras - at any price.

Pros: Small yet physically robust (you can feel the quality). Does everything except physically print the photos ;) VERY nice 60p video @ 1080p with CAF. New firmware (v1.20) as of June 20th, 2013, that adds even more enhancements such as up to 10fps!, even faster AF times, and better battery life. Dual band WiFi plus NFC = fast/easy photo transfers and/or uploads.

Cons: Not so much a specific Samsung con since their quality is great, but the desirable 45mm 2D/3D and 18-200mm lenses are still VERY expensive. Hopefully that will change in time.

Pros: Compact, clear photos, ease of use. Great for those times I do not want to carry my Nikon d7100 and lenses around.

Cons: None that I can find

  • Aperture Priority: The camera selects a shutter speed based on the aperture value you have set manually. You can adjust the depth of field by changing the aperture value.
  • Shutter Priority: The camera selects an aperture value based on the shutter speed you have set manually. You can capture fast-moving subjects with a fast shutter speed or create tracer effects with a slow shutter speed.

  • Multi: Exposure will be calculated based on an average of the available light in the image area. This is suitable for general use.
  • Spot: Only the rectangular area in the center of the LCD monitor will be metered for light. This is suitable when the subject in the center is exposed correctly, regardless of the back lighting.

ISO Sensitivity: You can select the ISO sensitivity when taking pictures. The speed or specific light-sensitivity of a camera is rated by ISO numbers. A higher ISO setting allows for faster shutter speed, so you can take photos indoors or in low light without the need for a flash. The camera lets you set the ISO sensitivity automatically or manually between ISO 100-25600 by 1 EV or 1/3 EV steps.

I returned this camera as it wasn't going to work for what I needed, so I am sorry I can't answer your question. But if you call Samsung they will help you. They helped me when I had a problem. The number is in the owners manual. [ XROADS FREELANC  Aug 12, 2014 ]
