Crutchfield: Samsung Evolution Kit
The Evolution Kit module attaches easily to the back of the TV
Samsung's Evolution Kit is a revolutionary idea. Connect this compact module to your compatible 2012 Samsung Smart TV and you immediately boost its processing power, adding new features and functions. At the heart of the Evolution Kit is Samsung's quad core processor, which speeds up opening and using apps, and makes web browsing faster and more responsive.
In addition to a significant jump in processing power, the Evolution Kit includes Samsung's trackpad remote control with built-in microphone for voice control. Samsung's Voice Interaction lets you use a natural, conversational style of speaking for searching and controlling the TV.
There's a new look, too. All your content options are organized in the multi-panel Smart Hub on-screen interface. Receive live TV program suggestions via "S Recommendation" from the On TV Panel, rent movies and catch up on shows you may have missed from the Apps panel, and use the Social panel to keep in touch with Facebook friends.
The SEK-1000 Evolution Kit is compatible with these 2012 Samsung Smart TVs: ES7500, ES8000, and ES9000 LED-LCD models, and E7000 and E8000 plasma models.

For the price I would give it try, Even though most the reviews were not good. Well the tv saw the kit, but would not install the upgrade after many try.So removed the kit. The only thing that worked was the new remote. only keeping the kit, because I tossed out the box , Total waste of money.
Pros: nice remote
Cons: did not work.very poor instructions
The product in question was on discount so I figured I'd give it a shot. I read the numerous reviews indicating a sometimes troublesome and complicated install. I installed the unit and it was not detected. The reviews and tips I've read indicate that sometimes removing and reinstalling the unit a couple times is necessary before the TV recognizes it. In my first attempt to re-seat it, the unit was as difficult to pull out as it was to put in. I reviewed the instructions and followed the removal instructions to the letter. In the process of doing this, the retaining clip on the TV, which is part of the evolution kit connection to the TV's board, was damaged severely. It was bent over 1/8th of an inch out, causing the unit to not re-seat. Afraid to risk further damaging this hugely expensive TV, I called Crutchfield customer service. They explained that they could refund the unit and I responded that the unit was no longer my concern, but the damage it did to my TV. I then called Samsung, who has notoriously bad customer service from my experience. Their rep heard my problem and was quick to ignore the fact that I had done nothing wrong. They started with their "Physical Damage" shpeil and I asked for a supervisor. I was unable to be transfered, none available per the rep. In the end, I had to use pliars and risk breaking the TV to repair the clip. I was fortunately able to do so without breaking the entire TV. The thing now works nicely but beware...
Pros: Faster processor, remote that's not pure garbage
Cons: Installation risk and difficulty, lack of screen mirroring
to install it was a hassle. i had to struggle to make the module fit in the back.. i was scared to break the screen/ break motherboard. once it was in tv lost wifi connectivity and i had to call support... needed to run direct lan cable for internet to upgrade smart hub(Without which the module is not recognized). totally took about20 mins to update and install the module and 15 mins to struggle with tv. and internet connectivity. once it was done everything ran smoothly
Pros: tv smart hub upgraded.bought tv in 2011. default smart hub was really slow . now it is very quick Netflix now has auto playlist functionality for tv series. browser has improved a lot but still cannot play streaming movies...youtube video works on browser...youtube app is also awesome an fast. new remote has a learning curve but it is really responsive.
Cons: netflix had some issues after upgrade had to reset the smarthub to fix it thus all apps needed to be re installed. fitting the box in the tv was the most scary part if it is not all the way in the tv graphics looks off (every thing becomes shade of yellow.. pushing too hard on it flexes the motherboard of the tv which is also unnerving..i took the back of the screwdriver and had to gently hammer it....do not make any attempt to pull it out if it did not fit the first time..trust me.
Like all Samsung products, it has extrime amount of uses. Howeve, in the same maner, all of them are simply impossible to use without jumping through a thousand hoops. Such as reregistering with netflix if your already registered. With there super remote control this should take about ten minutes. Save your money and don't buy a smart tv,nore there upgrade.
Cons: See above
So far I have not been able to get this to work "out of the box." Despite many careful installation attempts module is not recognized. Now I need to allocate time to talk to Crutchfield Tech support, Samsung Tech support, or return it. Time is precious, so right now it sitting physically installed but inoperable until have time to deal with it. In reading other reviews I kinda suspected this might happen, but I though I'd take a chance and see if I got lucky with an easy successful installation. I didn't.
Installed and worked as advertised.
Pros: Added greater web possibilities.
Followed instructions to the letter but still took 3 attempts for the TV to recognize the kit. After that, everything went normally. The evolution software download took a LONG time, even with high speed internet. After install, there were some obvious and really nice upgrades - definitely worth getting, especially for a 2012 vintage tv!
Pros: Great interface, faster transitions, lots of nice new features, including cable guide, and intuitive access to lots of other smart tv features
Cons: Long install time
Tv would not play video from internet untill we upgraded. still has a few issuses but it will play most videos now.Love the new remote much better than the one that came with the tv.
Pros: remote much more user friendly, better channel guide
Cons: internet could still be better
Does Not Work, A waste of money!!
I purchased the SEK-1000 to keep the 8000 series TV upgraded to the latest electronics. Prior to installing the kit, I was in one respect underutilizing all the smart features of the TV, purchasing it solely to get the best possible TV image that Samsung has available. I control the TV and my DirecTv DVR with the Diretv remote and all programsouce with my Denon receiver remote. My Denon was not HDMI ARC capable so I couldn't use the Samsung TV to control things. When I installed the Evolution kit, I followed instructions and used the new Smart Touch Remote to set up the kit. Big mistake! The TV and remote were now controlling me not the other way around. When turning it on, The primary image was in the upper 1/4 of the screen and I had to click OK on the new remote to make the image full screen. It frequently showed "popups" asking me to use voice commands to control things. I would have to mute sound and finally the popup disappeared. Twice in the month I had it, it switch input from HDMI to antenna w/o me doing a thing and I would have to use the source button to get back to HDMI. Every time I switch program source on the Denon remote, I would have to click OK on the new remote before it would allow me to use that source. I tried Crutchfield Tech Support and Samsung Tech Support as to how I could undo all the unwanted distractions to no avail! NEITHER ONE could help me!
Pros: For those wanting to control everything using their TV it is probably quite good. Given my remarks above, I didn't want to use them.
Cons: Lack of knowledgeable tech support at both Crutchfield and Samsung! An email to Samsung detailing all my problems and asking for help getting the upgraded TV to perform as it had before the upgrade was never answered! I had to come up with a solution myself. (I first removed the Evolution Kit and restored the TV to its original state. Then reinstalled the kit using the original remote and told it my TV source wasn't listed and turned off the TV. Turned it back on and it works like before!
Lots of trouble getting it to see my wireless network. Still working with Samsung to resolve Problem.
Pros: Improvement in picture .
Cons: Still not connected to Internet
Box works great , the remote won't work. Call Crutchfield no help, called Samsung they never called back.
Cons:Crutchfield response on 7/15/2013 We forwarded this review to our Technical Support team for follow-up. Lifetime tech support comes with every Crutchfield purchase.
this item is great
I added this to my 2012 Samsung UN55ES8000 TV, and is does not seem to do anything for the picture, but does speed up internet applications, which we don't actually use as these are available from our Blu-ray player and TiVo DVR. It does add a cool remote controller though.
Pros: Cool remote
Cons: Expensive, and there is very limited information on the Samsung website to explain what it actually does.
bought it for my 65es8000. the tv worked great before, internet and all. plugged in evolution module per instructions, after updates, and the thing didn't recognize ANY wireless networks. couldn't get it to do so. called samsung first, they made a ticket number and said tech services would call.....NOT! Called Crutchfield, and true to form, offered a replacement quickly with no questions asked! The tech couldn't give me any ideas because samsung gives them precious little information to help customers! The tech did say, once we get it to work, its awesome, so i look forward to a working unit. LOVE Crutchfield, and their customer service! Samsung needs to learn how to treat their customers. At least get back to me!! I'll update How the evolution kit works once I get it working!!!
Pros: Crutchfield's phenomenal customer support
Cons: Samsung's awful customer support

It cannot work with a Sony TV. It will only work with select Samsung TV's. I am not aware of any such upgrade hardware for a Sony TV but that could change so it may be worth a call to an advisor on 1-800-324-9695 to check. My Bio: https://www.crutchfield.com/Support/Bio.aspx?bio=101 [ Paul Jun 05, 2017 ] Staff
