    Sysytem sucks!

Tracy from Burke, VA on 4/19/2017

I hate this car radio/receiver. I got it as a gift for Christmas and my husband was so excited and did lots of research on the product but it has been nothing but a pain for me. The only feature I like is the ability to use bluetooth for phone calls. The screen has so much glare that I struggle to see the screen unless it is a cloudy day. The apps always crash and you have to touch the screen buttons so many times just to get to any of the functions you want to use. There is no app for sirius XM. This morning I was once again without any music because the audio function crashed. The presets for my favorites on the phone book often disappear and I have to reset them. The navigation and waze apps only work if you turn on the hotspot of your phone and then you have to select options to get it to play through the speakers. This radio has become a daily frustration for me and I can't even enjoy my car rides. Totally bummed at how disappointing this system is!!

    Pros: bluetooth for phone calls

    Cons: everything else

    A tad bit quirky

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The unit is a great concept the application is a bit behind, ancient android os bogs down some times, the rca outputs cannot be summed (using a dsp ) the overall look of the unit is stellar. A motorized face plate would have been clutch as it aits at an odd angle and collects gobs of glare. Functionality of the stock unit is limited butnwith some simple work root can be granted and more possibility opened. Searching on the ipod is lack luster. The abundance of usb ports is nice though.

    Pros: Clean style, usb galour

Cons: Can be slow doesnt hold settinga sometimes, like shuffle on the ipod, no letter search function in the ipod

    Was hoping for more

    2008 Ford F-250 Super Duty
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

If you use this just as it comes out of the box I would say it is "ok". I found that it didn't play well with the steering wheel control in my F-250 using the AWSC-1 adapter. Sometimes they would work and some times they wouldn't. Just using it stock as a stereo was ok. Like others say on here, the lack of physical controls ended up being pretty annoying - especially since my steering wheel controls didn't work consistently. BTW - I replaced this unit with a Pioneer AVH-4100 which I really like and the steering wheel controls work fine, so I do think it was the unit. I also found that radio reception would drop off once in a while. But it would stream bluetooth, etc ok. So with this experience not being that great I figured I would see if I could get it into something better. I was able to get it to run other Android apps directly and even get Google Play working. However, with such an old version of the Android OS, many apps just wouldn't work. And the ones that did, like Pandora, didn't work reliably and would just die once in a while. The screen resolution also wasn't good enough to see much beyond the keyboard when it would come up. So for me, lesson learned. I got the Pioneer and am much happier now.

Pros: Looks cool. Will run some Android apps natively. Wifi capability.

Cons: Old Android OS that Parrot hasn't kept up to date. Lack of physical volume / track controls.

    Falls short, not mature yet.

Kev from Denver, CO on 12/24/2014

My biggest gripe, and a fatal flaw IMO is there are no dedicated volume controls; you must be in the media player app to turn the volume up and down. So if you're in maps, you have to switch back to the media player to change the volume, and then back to the maps app to continue. There's a lot of little glitches: The iGo app is the default nav app and it's pretty bad. You can't zoom out on a map; your zoom level is set in preferences and that's it. 3rd party map apps like NaviFree won't do turn by turn unless you remain in the app. The volume randomly turns itself down once in awhile. The repeat and random settings will randomly turn on and off. The messaging app is useless, it'll notify you and read you a text message, but the only thing you can do is call the person, you can't reply. The voice recognition for commands are pretty poor, and can't do much. When going to a phone book entry, it doesn't show you which number is which (home, mobile, etc). The phone keypad star, pound and zero keys are off the the right, when you expect them to be underneath. It doesn't show track numbers or album art in the iPod lists. It doesn't show radio frequencies in the presets, just a few characters of the RDS on each button, so you don't know which station is which. The backup camera takes too long to come on - about 3 seconds. I don't get the removable thing on the left, pointless. The power light is too bright. I'm disappointed. I'm trading it for something else.

Pros: Looks good in the dash. I like the swipe forward/back for next/previous track. Runs android (old version, gingerbread I think) so one could hack it and potentially make it better. The iPod display screen is nice to look at but you can't change the background. Offline map data is nice, it doesn't need the internet to navigate.

Cons: No hard volume controls. Way too many software glitches. Bad navigation app. The apps are mostly disconnected from each other (they don't integrate.) Rear camera app takes too long to load. Voice commands don't do enough - you can only play music or call a contact. The software feels underdeveloped all around.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Easy unit to install. Spent most in the installation running wire to the backup camera and to the handbrake. Needed to change the wiring connectors at the headunit. After that, all went well. Spent time trying to configure the unit. Comes with some documentation, but not a lot of detail. Mostly trial and error. The trim piece fit well and has a factory look. I have been trying to make it work with the stock configuration, but have been giving strong thought to rooting the device. It comes with iGO for navigation, but the Parrot app store no longer has this listed and I read that the Tom Tom app is no longer upgrading the maps. I think with rooting to allow for more customization ,this could be a really good unit.

Pros: Nice fit and finish. Mostly easy install with a few minor issues.

Cons: Limited to Parrot's app store if you do not root the device

    Works surprisingly well

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Works exactly as you'd expect. It's a landscape-mode android tablet running an ancient Android. Works well as a stereo, works great for bluetooth (especially with an android phone running something modern). GPS works well for positioning. I just got it working last night and gave it a 10 minute test, so remember that when reading my review... I really wish that they'd gotten Play Store support. Google Music (I have the streaming service) and Maps would be wonderful. And Ingress, and a few others. I guess it's time to play with adb... Where do you put all those USB cables? Drill holes in your dash? That's the last big question. I might have to hit mouser for a block of USB ports to wire back into this thing. But getting a matching faceplate to fit my care will be tough.

Pros: Great bluetooth work, easy install, lots of USB ports! Simple face can't really clash with any car interior. Really makes you want to hack your car in a few ways!

Cons: The mic needs to be shoved in pretty good before it works. Ancient version of Android No Play Store support No Google Maps support Really makes you want to hack your car in a few ways!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

...because I read quite a few reports of people complaining about bad radio reception. Most new cars with tiny antennae or 'shark fins' have a signal amplifier in the base of the antenna. This amplifier needs 12 volts for the system to work so it seems to me that some people are forgetting this little detail. I connected mine to the Parrot's blue wire labeled Power Antenna and the reception is as good as the OEM. With that aside, I can say that I am quite impressed by the versatility of the Asteroid Smart. It has WiFi and Bluetooth connectivity meaning it can connect to any Nokia, Apple, Android or Windows phone or even your home WiFi (if its signal can reach the Asteroid). Installation was a breeze. Setup took me some time, mainly upgrading the firmware and setting up the audio enhancements to my liking. I also 'rooted' my unit and installed the Google Play Store which gave me access to a lot more software than what's available at the official store. Audio quality is very good, phone conversations are very clear (its a Parrot!). The capacitive screen is *great* but sometimes it reflects too much. I'll be looking for a screen protector with anti-reflective coating very soon. All in all I'm very, very happy with this unit and recommend it wholeheartedly. Also it runs Android so you can customize it to your liking. Even the boot screen!

Pros: Self Contained Call quality Customizable with little effort Capacitive touch screen

Cons: Sometimes screen reflects too much light

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

It has been almost a month since I installed the Parrot Asteroid Smart and I would purchase it again without hesitation. I was very concerned with the unit being a couple years old (ancient as far as Android products go) and that it would be laggy and not very "smart". On the contrary, it does everything I want it to do. My main requirements were Waze, Spotify, easy bluetooth sharing, aux in, a backup camera, and mp3 playing for an external device. It does all these very well. Only time will tell if all of these apps will be supported in a few years from now. That is my one concern with a "smart" device like this. On the other hand, it will always be able to play mp3's, bluetooth, etc so if worse comes to worse, it will still function as an "older" car stereo. I purchased the Torque Pro app for $5 and a $20 BAFX Products - Bluetooth OBD2 scan tool from Amazon and that gets more people impressed than anything else. During trips, I can have the Asteroid monitor every aspect of my engine real time and graph it out. Lastly, my super-geek engineer friend tried to talk me out of buying it but now is purchasing one for his own vehicle after seeing how it works. I give it a 2 thumbs up!

Pros: Freaking android in my dash! Rooted and have all my apps, slingbox, SiriusXM app, email etc IN MY DASH! Also looks beautiful and installation kit was a perfect fit.

Cons: Bluetooth WiFi tethering is not reliable however bluetooth audio streaming is flawless. I am going to purchase a wifi hotspot device and see if it performs better than bluetooth tethering, which i'm pretty sure it will.

Great features beautiful screen everything I wanted. Firmware is a little buggy at times. After updating it's been fine. Updating the firmware also fixed some annoying bits about the NAV software. Works well with my Alpine PDX-V9 amp. Great sound quality. The bluetooth microphone is probably the best on the market. Call quality is crystal clear.

Pros: Android. Built in nav. Bluetooth. Looks great.

Cons: No satellite radio. App store is fairly empty. Firmware is buggy out of box. Updates required.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is what I have been looking for out of a car stereo. It has been an adjustment from the standard Kenwood and Pioneer, but once you get used to the controls, it's very easy to get around. Get used to it because the other big names are moving to this style of head unit as well. My main interest in the Parrot is the wireless connectivity. I can stream online radio, check weather, and do a google search without plugging in. My previous radio was a Kenwood DDX419 which worked well but I found the wires to be a hassle and although I love Garmin, the plug in feature, which did nothing more than put the Iphone view on the screen was buggy and not very usable. So I found myself just using the bluetooth for phone calls and playing my iphone music. Now I can create a network and use my data from my phone for online content through Wifi or bluetooth or plugged in. The Apps store has some good stuff but hopefully they will get more. I highly recommend it for the Tech savvy user.

Pros: - Looks good - Wireless internet connection with phone - some free navigation apps and Tom Tom for a fee - Phone sounds great on both ends (better than the Kenwood) - Liveradio by Radioline rocks

Cons: - Slow startup (not an issue for me but maybe for some) - no HD radio tuner - no Pandora app (if I had wireless control I would give it 6 stars) - no Garmin app

    Almost there.

Super cool, minus the interface and minor glitches in usage. They need to address some of the clunky issue concerning interface design and interaction. The basic idea is good, however it is lacking. Really, all they would have to do is mimic any cellular device to get an idea. Shop for apps is weak. Control of the appearance is weak. Just needs some polishing and this thing would be amazing.

Pros: Design. Basic functionality. Simplicity in design.

    Cons: Slow. Limited. Lacking.

Great Product when it boots correctly

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I installed the Asteroid Smart into my 2007 GMC Yukon with the Axxess GMOS -LAN 1. Installation worked the first time I powered it up and I was able to retain factory chimes and steering wheel controls. I also put in a rear view camera. Lately, I have been having random trouble when it boots up from a long sleep. Sometimes the unit is frozen and doesn't register any screen touches. Other times it boots up without starting the bluetooth. Both issues require me to reboot the system, which wouldn't be a big deal if you didn't have to pull off the removable face and push a small pin hole button. I haven't rooted or modified the system in anyway, so the system seems half-baked to me. I have the latest firmware and did a factory reset which didn't help. When it boots up correctly, I love the system. It responds quickly to touches and people hear me perfectly through the bluetooth. The rear view camera will show even if the system hasn't completed booted up. I downloaded the Tom Tom app to replace the iGo Navigation system. If you connect your phone with personal hot spot you can receive live traffic updates. Overall, they system is just ok for the price. If it wasn't so buggy on boot up I would give it a perfect 5.

Pros: Great bluetooth, smooth touch response, improved loudness over factory system, great EQ and bass response. iPod connectivity is awesome. Plenty of USB ports.

Cons: Buggy bootup, difficult to reset while driving. Can not use iTunes radio while bluetooth internet is connected to unit. Plenty of glare on sunny days. Limited app store without rooting Will not display contact photos when synchronized with iPhone (Apple restrictions not Parrot's fault)

    Highly recommended

I'm not sure why some people are giving negative reviews. This unit works great. It isn't perfect but it is definitely going in the right direction as far as after market head units go.

Pros: Smooth responses while using the touch screen. It's like using a android tablet as a stereo. Easy interface, very intuitive.

Cons: It does sometimes run into software problems, like any phone or tablet. A quick power off and on will fix all of your problem.

If you are thinking about the android tablet install in your car, stop! This headunit is 100x easier, will cost less in the long run, and mount with a simple kit. Yes you could be the only person in town with a 10" touchscreen in their dash. But it's going to be no fun. I researched and priced out exactly what I would need to do a simple 7" tablet and it easily would have cost a lot more that the Asteroid Smart. Plus it has a built in radio, so when you get in and turn it on you have music, doesn't need to link up to a hotspot or get internet connection just to have some music on a five minute drive. I went with the provided kits and overall install took about 3 hours. But I soldered every connection and did it all right. The people I call with it do sometimes say I sound weird, but speaker phones all have issues from time to time, could just be reception on either end. That is the extent of the issues I have had. You can find ton of info on this device in different forums and somewhere there is a usb volume knob that works with it too. Smart is the way to go!

Pros: Radio built in It's android in your dash. Endless options with developers working on android upgrades all the time

Cons: Speaker phone a little quirky

    Great product.

The product works great. All functions and aspects are as advertised and you can download aptoid to the device to get Apps not included in parrot market. The GPS works great. Auto dimming for night mode is a real plus. The bluetooth voice works perfectly. The installation was very easy I did it all myself. I have netflix, youtube, zedge, firefox, pandora, and various other apps running on it. Syncs up to my galaxy and ipod flawlessly.

Pros: Everything works as advertised and if you are familiar with android you will do just fine.

Cons: Parrot market is limited but if you download aptoid you have no problems.

I bought this receiver to upgrade my 2007 Toyota Tundra. Overall it's awesome. I don't think I could have picked a better receiver.

Pros: Music sounds great, love the touch screen, and think it's great that I can access the internet and all that from my car's radio.

Cons: I have trouble with the navigation system. Unless I have an actual address, I can't find anything. (type things like Mc Donald's, total wine, etc.. get no results even though I know it's less than 5 miles away)

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This has to be the coolest system I have installed. I like having all the apps I used for my car through the phone now in the dash. I installed this into my 2014 Ford Focus SE without any issues other that the Unika. I haven't rooted this thing yet and as long as the apps I want can be side loaded without root I probably won't bother. I am using Torque Pro with the "Yongtek ELM 327 Bluetooth Obdii Obd2 Diagnostic Scanner, Elm327 Wireless OBD 2 Scan Tool Check Engine Light CAR Code Reader" from another retailer and also installed the "HDE E336 Waterproof Rear Vehicle Backup Camera With 170 degree Viewing Angle" . I ran the GPS behind the HU in the dash and it works great. I also have cables ran to charge my note 3, my wife's Iphone 5c, an extra ran for the USB modem I ordered, and one to connect it to my computer (future use?). Everything is working great except I am waiting on my last cable to arrive so I can complete the installation of the steering wheel controls. I bought the axxess aswc-1 and had to order the axxess aswc-parrot adapter. I just hope it works for the volume controls. All the apps I have tried so far from the asteroid market are working flawless so far and I plan to side load Pandora next.

Pros: Great looking display at half the cost of most other units I was looking at.

Cons: Radio would shut down when trying to us with Ford Sync. This isn't much of an issue for me so I haven't looked to see if there was anything to do in order to resolve. I just unpaired my phone from Sync and it is no longer an issue.

All I can say is money well spent!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This unit kicks butt! I got it installed in my 2013 370z along with the aswc-1. To bridge the aswc with the parrot asteroid smart I got the AW-SWC-PARROT. Installation was a breeze. I had to manually program my swc buttons as the aswc did not detect all of them and that was a breeze as well. I even got a rear view camera and hooked that up to the parrot smart as well. I was going to keep the HU without rooting but after 3 days I had this baby rooted with framaroot. I sideloaded the googleframework.apk, vending.apk, google maps 6.14.4.apk,, Keyboard for android 2.3. I installed youtube and waze from the play store. The unit functions flawlessly! Google voice search works like your phone. Just tap the voice icon and say navigate to ... You'll need to tether data from your phone. I recommend switching to a reliable 4g network to have a good experience with this HU. I don't really get a glare from the screen since the HU sits low in the center of the dash. All in all I would recommend this to anyone who wants to tinker a little and have a good reliable cell phone provider to tether data over to the parrot smart.

Pros: Works like a phone Works with Metra ASWC now and makes hooking up the swc a breeze (unlike the unika) This HU will make you smile in appreciation after you install it.

Cons: No physical buttons but no need. SWC works flawlessly.

Cheap to install and easy to learn. The parrot system isn't complicated one bit. It was a gift to my boyfriend and the sound quality when I'm on the phone with him in the car is crystal clean. The GPS navigation works like a charm as well. It's always updated so never gets you lost. I love the way when your on Igo and I tells the speed limit and also how fast your going and it's very accurate and on point.

Pros: It's worth the money. Clear quality. Easy and cheap to get installed. I love the way when your on Igo and I tells the speed limit and also how fast your going and it's very accurate and on point.

Cons: The only thing I don't like is there's no dial for the sound. You always have to go to Igo to have the speaker on screen to control the volume

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I just installed this unit in my 2006 Ford Escape & I love it. I grounded the green wire so all functions work, then rooted it and got the google app store working. That allowed me to dump the awful igo gps app, install a 32 gig card and get both google maps & CoPilot working. My Verizon Galaxy Note 3 plays both music and video perfectly on it through an HDMI connection and the Parrot tethers to my unlimited data plan through WiFi. I have a killer multi-amp sound system and this unit works well with it. About the only negative I can think of is the FM tuner reception is very weak, but I hardly ever use it anyway so that's not big deal. I can get perfect FM from iheart radio through my phone anyway when I want it. ~John

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This unit replaced a JVC KW-NSX700 in my Chevy Colorado. The JVC was a real disappointment, mostly because the MirrorLink connection didn't have enough power to keep my phone charged while I was using it. The Smart, on the other hand, is already an Android device and only needs the phone for a data connection. The GPS works great with the antenna installed under my dash and I've never had a problem with it finding the satellites. It's faster than my S3 in that way. Waze works great with this and the sound quality is on par with what I got out of the JVC and much better than what I had with the factory radio. It's possible to run the Android Market and download any app that is compatible with Gingerbread, but you'll have to root the radio to do that. The XDA Developers Forum has great instructions if you want to take that route. Crutchfield Tech Support was extremely helpful throughout the relatively easy installation process and gets my thumbs up!

Pros: Price, Connectivity - Screen Quality (much better than the JVC) - ease of installation, lots of input ports. Easy extension due to it running on Android.

Cons: No built-in Satellite Radio connectivity (had to use a portable Sirius XM radio - Lynx - and FM Direct connection)

Great unit with a few rough edges

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Out of box, the Smart was functional and very easy to install. The media player app isn't perfect, but it's fine. It was simple to get Waze running, tether it for data, connect an OBD-II reader, and more. If you root it and install the Google Play store, it gets far better than it was stock. The unit sounds much better than my factory radio and was easy to hook up to the factory amplifier. I'm currently very happy that I purchased this, and would buy it again.

Pros: Sideload any app you want, very easy to root, full Android device, excellent sound.

Cons: No hard buttons for volume/track change. Asteroid Store is rather limited. Rooting was required to get the Play store to get access to most apps. The volume on-screen soft-button doesn't work in Waze. It runs an old version of Android (2.3) and the hardware is a little slow compared to what's out today.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

At first reading all of the positive reviews made me buy this unit but after installing it, it has some serious firmware issues. This unit doesn't play video not very well or at all like it advertises. You can only play videos off of the smart card and even then, the video is jittery. At the rear of the unit it has video inputs but you can't add anything to it to play video. The operating system doesn't support video eventhough they are video inputs; go figure and this was confirmed by Parrot's tech support. Plus, the volume cuts out sometimes and you have to do a reboot to get it to work again. So if you are driving and listening to music, and it cuts out, you wull have to pull over to turn the unit of and on again. What a pain. In my opinion, the unit wasn't ready to be sold at retailers until they have fixed all of the bugs and qwerks.

Pros: Nice sound & RMS power, bluetooth works nice and voice commands work nicely.

Cons: Little to no video playback and when it plays, jittery. Volume cuts out completly without any warning, must reboot unit to get the volume back. Smart card limitations and very little applications available for download.

This unit is probably the best "Android Powered" offering out there at the moment. It works well and is reasonably responsive. It is a bit laggy at times. It is a bit high priced for what it is but it does produce plenty of good audio. Better than any other aftermarket units I have used in the past. It runs a stripped down version of Android but can be customized like any other android device. I am not sure I would buy it again, but I don't dislike it enough to return it. I also bought the Unika steering wheel control adapter. It was not very intuitive and required some engineering to make it work.

Pros: capacitive multi-touch screen, Good audio quality, easy installation, plenty of USB ports, good GPS ability

Cons: Old version of Android, A bit laggy, not very functional out of the box. Limited steering wheel control adapter

Love this little unit......iGo was a bit frustrating, but solved that by buying/installing TomTom USA......Does everything i want it to do, music through iPod and tuner, nav using TomTom and BlueTooth telephony......not to mention you can do a lot more with the network connectivity, the SD card and USB inputs.....I would recommend running a cable from the microUSB/computer connection in the back before installation, as I didn't do that and could have already used it....not going to tear apart my dash again, but I should have run a cable in the first place.....Thing works as advertised and was cheap compared to many of the alternatives......Got it in my 93 Fleetwood Brougham and it will serve me well on long distance drives.....haven't done any sideloading of apps yet, but that'll be done in the future....

Pros: Like the pretty easy interface and like i said does exactly what i need done for my uses. Love the non-tethered Navigation capability and the iPod interface....Bluetooth works well and clear.

Cons: Only had two small issues, had a couple of calls dropped for no reason and the USB through the add'l extension cord doesn't allow you to load images. I would assume it is only for USB music......

Love the radio! Does everything I wanted it to do, and has a very user-friendly interface. It is very responsive, has easy to navigate windows, and boots up fairly quickly. Cons: Needs more Apps; voice search for a specific song (it only allows by Artist or Album); and needs Pandora! Otherwise awesome radio

Pros: Very user-friendly interface, very responsive, clear bluetooth sync (for phone, music/audio, and data connection), connects to my iPod within the first 10 seconds of boot up, very good voice recognition, decent audio effects, haven't tried the VLC app yet, but the Waze app is unbelievable!

Cons: Needs more apps (not much of a selection) like Pandora, and the free version of Spotify. Needs voice recognition by song name (only allows by Artist or by Album). Would be cool if it could read texts to you, or you could at least send texts. Doesn't start audio from the same spot in the song if the radio/car is turned off mid-song

I bought this radio to update my current factory radio on 2007 Jeep GCSRT8. Radio looks great but its a big disappointment, I have already returned it back to Crutchfield. It freezes randomly, requires hard reset, application market is empty, you have only few applications to download. Rear backup camera is not working with OEM camera unless you buy aftermarket, bluetooth doesn't work properly, popular application such as WAZE is malfunctioning, sound disappears randomly and the last thing which was playing on my nerves, it doesn't remember where you left off with your music, it always plays FM at the boot even though you were using iPhone or Auxiliary Input few minutes ago. I was testing this radio for 2 weeks and everyday something went wrong. I did apply latest update and I was hoping that it will fix all the issues people had but it didn't change anything.

Had this unit for a little over 30days brought from Crutchfield and what a huge disappointment. This unit has been a nightmare from the time I had it installed. First, Parrot has one of the worst tech support in the world. They hang up on you and do not provide much help. It is like you are bothering them. Second, The Unika steering wheel control did not work. Third, frequently the unit had no sound even though nothings on mute and hours later the sound would come back. Spoke to Manager of the tech support he said he would send me another unit but thought about it and opted out all together going to return this unit to Crutchfield. This unit will be great if it worked!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I wish I had more than 1500 characters to really review this head unit. In essence, I would not recommend this to anybody who wasn't going to root it and do their own thing. ALL of the software that comes with the PAS has serious flaws. Some examples: Navigation lacks zoom in/out functionality, music playback software won't play through a set of folders (it just stops at the last song and sits there), music playback software won't turn itself back on if you leave the car for 5 minutes, then come back, music playback software picks on spot to resume music play in an album I have never selected to listen to. The Bluetooth microphone comes unglued from its adhesive pad, but the pad stays stuck to the windshield. The GPS receiver did not come with the adhesive pad. The SD slot has to have the iGo card installed for nav. use, and the USB ports can't power a 2.5" hard drive. One extra 5V linear power regulator (these cost about $1) built into the PAS could've fixed this. The real killer for me is the whole tuning scenario you run into with this unit. There is no satellite radio, and no HD radio, so I expected a very good FM tuner. The FM tuner is the worst I have ever used. Every head unit I have installed in the last 15 years pulls in stations better than the PAS, and while you are listening, a message will pop up that says "Searching" and it won't go away unless you press the back button. You also can't name your stations. I will keep this HU and root it, sad.

Pros: Crutchfield support, pretty appearance when installed, delivers adequate output power to speakers

Cons: Software, accessories, functionality, tuner, tuner, tuner, support forum is pretty vacant

    Maybe I'm just a perfectionist

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I love the idea of a car stereo running Android. I wanted to load my favorite apps on it, run whatever navigation software that I wanted, and stream music. At the same time, I love car audio. I love the idea of a car stereo fully integrated in a vehicle. No visible wires, just full function and clean sound. The Parrot ASTEROID Smart falls short in nearly every respect, and here's why: The screen is a reflective, capacitive touchscreen. Most car audio touchscreens are resistive and anti-glare, with a fingerprint-resistant coating. You're touching it All. The. Time. The ASTEROID Smart needs constant wipedowns. Also, it is advertised as 6.1" but it has Android nav buttons on the left and a status bar across the top--reducing the effective screen size to 5.5" (a noticeable difference). My first ASTEROID Smart stopped reading the reverse wire signal. Camera was verified as working and input wire signal tested good, at 12V. Crutchfield replaced the faulty unit and the new one reads the backup signal, but constantly loses Bluetooth connection to any smartphone. Native Spotify app extremely glitchy. The stereo has an SD card slot with an included 8gb card, pre-loaded with iGo Navigation software. But don't try swapping out for a larger capacity; even if you copy all the contents of the smaller card to the larger one, the iGo app will not function. Parrot UNIKA is the only steering wheel control adapter which is compatible, and doesn't support GM, most Toyota, etc. Disappointed.

Pros: Concept is awesome. Good looking unit. Plenty of connectors. Shallow depth, making for easy installs. 23wrms=nice power. 6v pre-outs=great for running amps.

Cons: Screen size compromised. Questionable quality control. Fingerprints. Useless SD card slot (can't upgrade included card). Half-baked Asteroid Market apps. UNIKA steering wheel control adapter is the only way to integrate steering wheel controls and it is compatible with a small fraction of cars. No physical volume buttons. No support for Google Apps or Framework. ALSO--when powered on, it does not auto-resume last audio source (more annoying than it sounds).

    So far, so good!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I replaced the OEM Factory original Nissan Versa (2012) radio (Double DIN) with the Parrot Asteroid Smart. The installation went smoothly using the existing factory installed brackets and the Crutchfield supplied antenna adapter. So far, the unit has performed flawlessly. The display is great, and the WiFi and Bluetooth connectivity work without any problems. My only (minor) disappointment is the relatively limited "Asteroid Market" of downloadable apps. I had the *impression* that I would be able to download and run ANDROID apps on the receiver. That's simply not the case, since I do not already have an ANDROID device, I cannot download the ANDRIOD apps from Google or Amazon (both require a registered ANDRIOD device for downloading). If you have an ANDRIOD devise, you may find that it is easy to transfer the application onto the SD card used by ASTERIOD. Other than that, I feel the unit as a great value.

Pros: PRICE - WiFi - Bluetooth - performance - voice control - screen quality - ease of installation - iPhone support / control via a dedicated USB port. The "promise" of a vast library of additional apps from the ASTEROID Market place.

Cons: No CD/DVD player - Rather limited number of additional apps CURRENTLY available on the ASTEROID Marketplace.

This is basically a tablet for your car. It comes preloaded with a number of apps including iGo Navigation, which I happen to like better than Garmin. Setup was easy. I paired my iPhone in just a few seconds and I was able to make calls right from my phone's contact list on the Asteroid. Voice recognition does fairly well considering. Music sync'd and I was listening to songs on my phone while it was still in my belt holster. There are a lot of options for adjusting the radio as well. Sound overall seems pretty good. Installation was pretty straight-forward with only one item that needed Crutchfield's tech support to clear up. The head has a number of connections - 2 video inputs (1 for rear camera). A/V output. 4 USB ports (1 used by GPS). Audio in. The head actually terminates with a standard vehicle ISO 10487, which makes any splicing straight-forward (just Google the standard for pin out). The system boots up pretty fast. I connected it to wifi and updated the code with no problem.

Pros: -- Seems pretty configurable. As long as the app market continues to produce this can be a trendsetter for the market. -- Fast bootup -- Small/compact design -- Lots of inputs/outputs -- Fast screen response -- Integration with Apple i{devices} was simple -- Simple/easy to use while driving

Cons: -- Screen is shiny/highly reflective. In certain sunny conditions, it is hard to see -- No HD radio -- Concern about app development/availability -- Parrot support never responded to my online ticket, but Crutchfield was able to contact them. I shoul state they have a decent forum with folks willing to help.

    Excellent Idea, has some quirks.

Firstly, if you're simply going to be using this for GPS/NAV, music and blue tooth calls you'll have a good experience out of the box. This HU sounds great, way better than I had expected. There are EQ controls however it is an overall EQ control (i.e. you have no SEPARATED EQ for subs, which shouldn't be a problem for most people to begin with.) The screen can get a pretty bad glare are times, I am not too sure why companies are still manufacturing these glossy screens. The display is bright enough that you may be able to use a glare-free screen protector to help. It has not been a huge issue, it's still plenty visible. The GPS works extremely well and is fast to obtain a signal, the bluetooth tethering for media/phone calls works very well and the blue tooth calling has excellent quality on both ends using parrots supplied microphone. The interface is pretty well executed, when inside of a media app provided by parrot you can swipe up and down for volume and left to right to switch tracks so the lack of hardware buttons has not bothered me. The install was quite easy, if you've never installed an in dash NAV/video unit you may get a bit confused on some of the wiring. All of your standard connectors are the same. There is no wiring diagram for parrots harness in the manual but there is a pin out diagram on the back of the headunit I would buy another one of these HU's, and I may order another for my truck.

Pros: -Easy install, -Easy to side load android applications as well as root, -Has been able to use all USB mass storage media i've tried.

Cons: No separate crossover/EQ control for subwoofer, screen glare.

I had high hopes for this radio, but it failed to deliver in several areas (see cons below). It is still a cool device and is much better than what I had. Hopefully the issues can be resolved through software updates. For now I would only recommend the device for early adopters.

Pros: Easy to install, tons of connectivity options for your devices and Internet, can side load most Android apps

Cons: Poor customer support, device shipped with buggy software even after the 2.0.1 update, SD card difficult to remove (need needle nose pliers), no USB support for video playback, needs a physical volume control, crashes periodically and makes a very loud pop when it hard reboots, the iGo navigation is not the full version so it is limited in functionality, long boot time, does not remember the last audio source in use before power down, and there is an RDS issue that causes FM channel bleed over

Unit is pretty much what you see on paper, screen is bright, UI is easy to use, works great with ipod and iphone. The 4 USB ports is great, possibly the best feature of the unit. I was able to stash an old ipod in my glovebox to have my entire library of music, and keep the ipod charged all out of sight. Wifi works well, bluetooth also works well, and having a browser on the dashboard is kinda cool, since the screen is certainly larger than my phone. There are a couple issues though, the volume control could really use some physical buttons, instead it's a virtual slider which must be brought up from a menu selection. And the boot up time is kinda long, and won't remember the device you were listening to on your previous drive. I'm sure I'll get used to both of the issues in time, and they will not stop me from recommending the unit to my friends.

The Parrot Asteroid Smart is a well-executed Android-based car stereo with good integration of GPS navigation, bluetooth capabilities, and a nearly limitless potential for expandability. It is an Android tablet integrated on the front-end of what seems to be a quality car stereo. This product is for early adopters of technology since most people don't need (and probably should not have) access the internet while driving. But there is little doubt in my mind that all cars will be highly networked moving forward and this is just a glimpse and portal of where it will be going.

Pros: Good-looking high-contrast & responsive touchscreen, a lot of expandability options, native iPhone 5 support, very easy to sideload (non-native Asteroid) Android apps, should/will work with Torque to show ODB-II info on screen

Cons: No volume knob or physical buttons, limited native Asteroid apps at launch, AM radio sensitivity issues, no HD Radio built-in, not Android 4.0 (ICS)

While your vehicle is in motion (parking brake off), you can still control music sources, view song/artist information and album artwork from music sources, control Bluetooth functions, and use the navigation on-screen map.

Note: All functions requiring increased attention should only be used while your vehicle is stationary. Driver & passenger safety, along with the safety of fellow drivers should take priority over phone calls, music, & navigation instructions.

2-DIN Chassis: The Parrot Asteroid Smart has a 2-DIN chassis (also known as Double DIN or size DD), and will fit in many vehicles with a large dash opening. The unit can be ISO-mounted using factory brackets, or Euro-mounted using the supplied mounting sleeve. As always, please consult Crutchfield's Outfit My Car to verify fit with your vehicle.

    Onboard Navigation

iGo Primo Navigation: The Parrot Asteroid Smart features built-in iGo Primo navigation software that provides turn-by-turn visual and voice assistance to direct your destination. The built-in software quickly calculates step-by-step directions to any destination available on the included navigation map. The map database is stored on the included 8GB SD-card and contains map coverage of the United States (all 50 states), Canada, and Puerto Rico. *The included 8GB SD-card must remain installed during navigation. If removed, navigation map will be lost.

Note: Car navigation maps are frequently updated. While this database was judged to be as accurate as possible at the time of its release, a map database can never be 100% accurate. Road information that is maintained in the map databases, such as turn restrictions or road names may change over time.

GPS Receiver/Antenna: The Parrot Asteroid Smart includes an external GPS receiver/antenna module which plugs into a USB port on back of the head unit. The GPS receiver/antenna module works in conjunction with the unit's built-in navigation and driver assistance apps. The GPS receiver/antenna module should be installed in a unobstructed area along your vehicle's dashboard.

On-Screen Map: The unit's on-screen map shows your vehicle's current position (a blue arrow by default), the recommended route (an magenta line), the surrounding map area, and your destination as a checkered flag. The on-screen map shows streets, roads, and highways in a way that is similar to how a paper road map show them. A road's width and colors corresponds to their importance, so you can easily tell a freeway from a small street. When navigating a route, the top section of the map screen shows information about your next route maneuver and the next street or the next city/town. When approaching a turn, the map screen will zoom in and raise the view angle to let you easily recognize your maneuver at the next junction. If the next turn is at a distance, it will zoom out and lower the view angle to be flat so you can see the road in front of you. The map also displays data; such as the posted speed limit, your current speed, current time, distance to your destination, time left before you reach your destination, and your arrival time.

    • 2D/3D Map Mode: The Android Smart allows you to view its on-screen map in a 2D (two-dimensional) or 3D (three-dimensional) view. Similar to paper road maps, the 2D mode, shows you streets, roads, and elevation by color. In 3D mode, you can see the altitude and elevations differences. You can distinguish between valleys, mountains, and elevated roads. In selected cities 3D landmarks and 3D buildings are also displayed.
    • Color Mode: The navigation map screen uses different color themes (Day/Night) during the day and during the night for both the map and the menu screen. Daytime colors are similar to paper road maps, and the menus are bright. The nigh color themes use dark colors for large objects to keep the average brightness of the screen low. You can also set the navigation unit to switch between daytime and night color modes automatically based on the current time and GPS position.

Lane Information & Signposts: The Parrot Asteroid Smart's navigation map offers helpful lane information & signpost guidance.

    • Lane Information: When navigation on multilane roads, it is important to take the appropriate lane in order to follow the recommended route. If lane information is available in the map data, the map screen will display the lanes and their directions using small arrows at the bottom of the map. High lighted arrows represent the lanes you need to take.
    • Signposts: Where additional information is available, signposts substitute arrows. Signposts are displayed at the top of the map. The color and style of the signposts are similar to the real ones you can see above the road or by the roadside, They show the available destinations and the number of the road the lane leads to.
    • Exit Services: While navigation a route, you can find gas, food, lodging, and restrooms near upcoming exits. Services are listed under the following categories - Gas, Food, Lodging, and Restrooms. You must be on a major highway or road to use this feature.
    • Junction View: If you are approaching a freeway exit or a complex intersection and the needed information exists, the map is replaced with a 3D view of the junction. The lanes you need to take are displayed with arrows. Signposts can also be present, if information is available.
    • Tunnel View: When entering a tunnel, the map is replaced with a generic tunnel image so that surface roads and buildings cannot distract you.

Audible Alerts: The Parrot Asteroid Smart offers various audible alerts and functions to help you get to your destination safely.

    • Voice Guidance (Text-to-Speech): In addition to graphic directions, the Asteroid Smart provides voice guidance and turn-by-turn directions. You can select from English, French, Spanish, Korean, Japanese, and Chinese audible languages. The volume of the voice prompts can be increased with increases in speed to overcome road noise. Voice guidance can be turned off if you prefer.
    • Safety Alert: This function can warn you when you approach road safety cameras, school zones, or railroad crossings (if available). You can also add your own alert points. Beeps or the spoken type of alert will be heard when you are approaching of these points.
    • Speed Limit Warning: Some maps may contain information about the speed limits of certain road segments. The Asteroid Smart provides an audible warning if you exceed the recommended speed limit.

Where Am I?: This screen contains information about the current position (or approximately the last known position if GPS reception is not available).

Destination Search: The Destination Search Menu gives you many different ways to choose your destination or insert a waypoint in your current route. An on-screen keyboard appears to allow you to enter your destination from one of the following categories:

    Destination Search Description
Find on Map Search for a destination by scrolling the map display.
Find Address Enter full/partial address, or Search for a city (central location), or Search for the intersection of two roads.
Find Places Search for points-of-interest (POIs) by name or category near last know position, along route, around destination, or specific city.
Favorites Store your favorite locations for easy recall.
History Destinations that you have set previously
Waypoints You can add intermediate destinations along your main route.

Route Calculation: The Parrot Asteroid Smart calculates your route based on your Vehicle Type, Route Method, and Avoidances.

    • Vehicle Type: You select what type of vehicle you are driving, so the navigation unit can determine the best route based on your vehicle type (Car, Truck, Emergency, Bus, or Taxi).
    • Route Method: You can choose which route method (Fastest, Shortest, Green, Economical, or Easy) the navigation unit should use when calculating your route.
      • Fastest: give a quick route, if you can travel at or near the speed limit on all roads. Usually the best section for fast and normal cars
      • Shortest: gives a route that has the smallest total distance of all possible routes. It can be practical for slow vehicles
      • Green: gives a quick, but full efficient route based on the fuel consumption data you provide
      • Easy: results in a route with fewer turns and no difficult maneuvers
    • Avoidances: You can tell the navigation unit to avoid certain types of roads along your calculated route, such as - Highways, Tolls, Carpool/HOV, Unpaved Roads, and/or Ferries.

Automatic Route Recalculation: The unit will automatically recalculate your route if you stray from the navigation unit's previously calculated route.

Itinerary: You can view turn-by-turn instructions for your entire route and the distance between turns.

Route Simulation: You can preview all the route information and simulate travel along a projected route.

Traffic Alert: The Traffic alert option allows the Radio source to be automatically activated a& selected when the current station starts broadcasting traffic information.

    Audio Section

MOSFET Amplifier: The Parrot Asteroid Smart is equipped with a 23W (RMS) x 4Ch MOSFET amplifier. Compared to conventional power supplies, the MOSFET amplification circuit is smaller and more efficient, and it delivers increased power with less distortion and absolutely zero on/off switching noise. More power means louder and cleaner music at higher volumes because you're not pushing the limits of the amplification circuit.

6V/6CH Preamp Outputs: The Parrot Asteroid is fitted with six 6-volt preamp outputs (Front, Rear, & Sub).

Subwoofer Controls: You can control the volume (+/-6dB) of the subwoofer preamp output independently from the main volume. You can also adjust a the low-pass crossover frequency from 50 to 200Hz (in 10Hz increments) for the subwoofer preamp output.

Equalizer: The Parrot Asteroid Smart allows you to adjust low, medium, and high frequencies to your preferences. 10 EQ presets (Off, Vocal, Pop, Club, Punchy, Deep, Crystal, Custom 1/2/3) are available. The Custom presets activate the 7-band EQ  (60, 150, 400, 1k, 2k, 6k, 15k Hz).

Car Spatialization: For a better sound-stage you can select your optimal listening position. You can choose from All, Front Left, Front Right or Front. You can also manually adjust the fader & balance control.

Virtual Super Bass Effect: The Virtual Super Bass effect amplifies bass frequencies. The Cutoff Frequency setting allows you to select the bass cutoff frequency for the speakers (the lowest frequency that the speakers can generate naturally). The Virtual Super Bass will then reproduce the frequencies that are lower than this cutoff frequency. The Effect Intensity setting allows you to adjust the level of bass frequencies generated by the Virtual Super Bass effect.

Loudness: The Loudness function is a dynamic adjustment of bass & treble based on listening volume. This function compensates for the human ear's loss of sensitivity to bass & treble frequencies when the volume is low.

    AV Connections

AUX Input: The Parrot Asteroid Smart features a rear-panel 3.5mm auxiliary input for connecting an external audio player, such as a CD player. The Auxiliary input must be "activated" in the unit's menu.

AV Input: The rear-panel audio/video input consists of left and right RCA audio jacks and an RCA composite video jack, allowing you to connect external equipment to this head unit.

AV Output: The rear-panel Video Output consists of a composite video jack and stereo RCA jacks that allow you to connect an optional external monitor and headphone system (sold separately). You can watch the same video source that is being played back on the Parrot Asteroid Smart on the connected external monitor.

Rear-Camera Input: The unit features a composite video input for connecting an optional rear view camera (sold separately). The video from this connection can be set to display when switched to this input, or display the rear view camera video automatically when the vehicle is shifted into Reverse gear. The purple/white wire (within the harness) must be connected to the vehicle's reverse lamp circuit for automatic video switching. Automatic video switching takes approximately 1.1 seconds

    Remote Control

Steering Wheel Control Interface: You can retain steering wheel control by using the Axxess ASWC-1 steering wheel control interface with the AX-SWC-PARROT steering wheel control harness (both sold separately). This combination adapts the Parrot's 4-pin proprietary SWC port to a 3.5mm SWC port. This additional interface module lets you keep using your vehicle's steering wheel controls to change the sound volume as well as the music tracks or FM radio stations.

It will connect to an OBDII adapter and a smart phone at the same time. You can side load apps that you download. It can also connect to the Play Store but it requires a little work. You should look up forums and follow some of the threads to find out more. [ Leroy  Jun 18, 2016 ]
Parrot only runs its apps. Look on you tube there is way to side load apps. Not sure I would try it. Unit works well with your smart phone. Sirius,I heart radio and Rhapsody I use everyday. Might get the Verizon Dongle some day so parrot has mobile connection. You can connect to home wireless. My Escort detector talks same time as Droid phone to Parrot. Randy [ Randall  Jun 18, 2016 ]
I doubt anyone has tested that phone with this receiver. I looked at its USB inputs and they are not rated as playing audio from Android devices. If I had to guess, I do not expect a newer model Android phone to work with its USB inputs. I would think MSC class devices only which would be older Android phones with older versions of the operating system. Feel free to call an advisor on 1-800-324-9695 for help. He GPS on that radio did not impress me. I returned it for I think a pioneer with Garmin navigation [ RICHARD I  Mar 28, 2016 ]
Parrot will work with your phone or IPAD. Use the Bluetooth to communicate. Parrot has its own apps. Not easy to side load apps like the ones you want to use. If they are on other device may link up. Parrot works great with my Droid phone. I Heart Radio, Sirius XM and Rhapsody. Or use Verizon Dongle to provide internet to Parrot for its apps. Answers calls very well. Parrot answers calls and plays music really well. [ Randall  Mar 14, 2016 ]
unless those apps are compatible with the really old version of Android that's in the Parrot, then your out of luck [ Abraham  Mar 12, 2016 ]
Short answer is no. I have 3 Asteroid Smarts and have played with them quite a bit. First, they run on Android 2.3. Second, those apps aren't available on the Parrot store that I know of (haven't logged in in quite some time). And third, Parrot no longer supports their product. It may be possible to side load if the apps will run on 2.3 or root it but don't think I'd go to the trouble. [ James  Mar 11, 2016 ]

I see the same behavior - not sure how to fix that. [ Peter  Jan 04, 2016 ]
Get the unit near a wireless hotspot, and update the firmware. This was a common issue with the unit when they first came out. You will see a huge improvement. [ MIGUEL  Jan 04, 2016 ]
Hi, as or right now there is no way to default to the Bluetooth source. I have an iPod connected to the wired USB and it will default to that. It is a great unit, but I do wish it would default to the Bluetooth, as I listen to it the most. I hope that helps! [ BRANSON  Jan 04, 2016 ]

I have connected my 32 gig IPad with no issues but I dont have that many files to display. [ JERRY  Jun 10, 2014 ]
I've got a 120gig ipod permanently hooked up to mine, it pulls the XML list of artists/albums/whatever and dispalys them as expected. You flip through the artists like you would on a smart phone, so navigation is pretty natural. It's pretty easy for me to get Adrian Belew to ZZTop (Zappa starts with F dude :P) There is sometimes a problem skipping songs, if the album art hasn't yet loaded for the new song, i can't skip past it. Kindof annoying when it's on shuffle, but if I'm progrockingout to an album there's no issue. [ TEDDY  Jun 10, 2014 ]
I didn't have an ipod but did use an 8 gig mem chip. Navigation was fine and quick. What I didn't like about the Parrot was its limited APPS. Yes you did have to scroll down. [ DAVE  Jun 09, 2014 ]
Not that I know of, it a light blue graffic wallpaper on the main menu. The applications all use different backgrounds and might have settings to changed the background color.. [ JERRY  Apr 07, 2014 ]
Yes. I have a 4Runner as well. But this stereo system has many, many problems that prompted me to return it. [ WILL  Apr 06, 2014 ]
It will let you change your wallpaper. The actual lights will not change. They are a white color. [ Brian  Apr 06, 2014 ]
Hi, You can change the background picture by rooting, however this unit is unique. It's not like a pioneer or sony or whatever where you can change the button colors. It really looks nice. I've got a jeep wrangler with green lighting, but it just looks sleek. Trust me, I've tried everything and although this unit is different, it's the closest thing to an android or iphone or ipad in the dash you can get. I love it. [ BRANSON  Apr 06, 2014 ]

Yes, it can use torque with a bluetooth obdii [ Nick  Apr 05, 2014 ]
Yes, you can find it on asteroid marketplace: [ DAVID  Mar 04, 2014 ]
Yes, I use a bluetooth OBDII dongle and torque. You will have to enable the option to use 2 bluetooth connections at once and I have heard that some of the cheaper dongles can be a bit finicky. regards. [ WILLIAM  Mar 03, 2014 ]
Yes, I've been able to successfully pair and use an OBDII device via bluetooth and monitor using Torque on the Parrot Asteroid Smart. You may want to make a special note, however, that some of the less expensive OBDII devices will not easily pair. If the pairing code for the device is something other than 0000, it may still possibly pair but is much more difficult and you will need to install an additional 3rd party app to manage the pairing process directly. [ JASON A  Mar 02, 2014 ]
It will use most apps on the appstore. Some say they don't work but if you can find the apk outside the appstore, sideload the app or find an application to spoof your device id they will install. Some work well, some are a little quirky. Its a trial and error thing. [ HURELL  Mar 02, 2014 ]
I was able to get the google play store loaded on it after finding a procedure online and installed the torque app. But I haven't had any luck pairing my OBDII scanner to the Smart. It wont pair to my kids Bluetooth game controller either. It doesn't have an issue though pairing with my iphone or android phone. Some people may have had better luck with the Bluetooth then I have. Other then the Bluetooth issues, the unit works great and if you don't want to go through the trouble of getting the google play store working, you can always side load android apps. [ MICHAEL P  Mar 02, 2014 ]
Yes you can. You can side load any app including torque. You can use any good Bluetooth reader for your car. Hope that helps! [ MATTHEW  Mar 02, 2014 ]
Crutcfeild made it VERY simple to order....and return. The parrot looked great. But soon found that it was very limited on its capabilities. It's apps are only provided by the company that made it. It's GPS was very non user friendly. My droid max HD...A GREAT phone had trouble connecting to it. The Bluetooth was weak and took forever to connext. Sounded great. Has SD card insertion for storage of app's and music which was nice. I installed it in my 2010 Chevy Silverado but eventually returned it and bought the Kenwood series DVD/GPS deck and absolutely love it. I would rate the PARROT a 2 out of 10. However like I said Crutchfeild made it super simple, I wouldn't buy my electronics from any other company. The Parrot needs more work. I wouldn't recommend it for you needs. Dave May. [ DAVE  Mar 02, 2014 ]
Hi, I have only had the unit for just a little bit, but that is one of the reasons I wanted it. I have not used one yet so I cannot personally comment, but I have read all over the web about people that have been doing that. I think the reader that people have been using is online for about 18$. Hope that helps. Branson [ BRANSON  Mar 02, 2014 ]
It will indeed run standard android apps. I rooted my parrot and side loaded Torque however Parrot has since released a version of Torque on their proprietary app store. [ STEVEN M  Mar 02, 2014 ]
No deffenietly not. it is powered from the satellites same as if you had a tom tom or a garmin device [ DEON  Feb 25, 2014 ]
No it does not need to be connected to your phone for the GAS to work. It comes with a GMC receiver for that action. I do believe that you can use your phone for certain functions though. I was not able to get mine to connect to my phone. It also has a USB port for a separate 3g connection. It also has wifi to connect to your home wifi setup. [ JASON R  Jan 25, 2014 ]
No the unit have its own connection to the satellites [ CARLOS  Jan 25, 2014 ]
No, it all depends on what app you are using for the navigation. The iGo app for example doesnt need the Internet but uses the maps it comes with. If you want to use waze or something else on the head unit though you would need an Internet connection. [ CHARLES  Jan 25, 2014 ]
The answer is "No"....but the iGo app can use your phone's internet connectivity for POIs, traffic and stuff.....I didn't really like using iGo, so I sprung for the TomTom app which is totally offline and works better than the pre-installed app.... I am pretty happy with the device though....use it with BT phone connectivity, radio, iPod interface and Nav has alot of other features that are cool, but those are the ones i use the works extremely well for me.... [ MICHAEL  Jan 24, 2014 ]
@Richard P - The unit comes with a offline Navi (iGo Primo) that is pretty darn good. Weak on the POI, but it is updated from time to time through the Parrot updates. For something like Google Maps "Online" Navi, you cannot even easily install. It takes some work. The iGo works great though. [ BART  Jan 24, 2014 ]
No it has full offline maps, no internet connection necessary for the nav to work. [ STEVEN M  Jan 24, 2014 ]
Nope! Works with the software that comes with the device with no internet connectivity [ WIL P.  Jan 24, 2014 ]
No But I would highly recommend you go with something else. I would not recommend the parrot asteroid to any body that wants a gps enabled stereo. [ DAVID  Jan 24, 2014 ]
I have this unit. It does not have to be connected to use GPS. I live this unit!! It uses and app called igo. [ Brian  Jan 24, 2014 ]
Hey Richard , it does not have to be connected in order for the gps app to work.. Joe [ JOSEPH  Jan 24, 2014 ]
The GPS navigation has its maps loaded onto an SD card, and a GPS receiver to keep track of its location. Therefore, it does not need any assistance from your smart phone to navigate. [ PAUL L  Jan 24, 2014 ]

Jeff, I'm a doit your selfer to. I have a 2010 Chevy Silverado. You can do this just take your time and make sure you get the on star kit for your hummer too. Took me about 2 hours with navigation too. Of course I returned because it's apps were limited and the nav software was not the greatest. Pandora also will not run on this unit. Better off with the Kenwood unit. [ DAVE  Apr 08, 2014 ]
