Our take on the Parrot ASTEROID

The ASTEROID isn't a web browser, but it can connect to the Internet to supply info to web-based apps and to load new apps. You can connect either using your mobile phone's Bluetooth® tether or your mobile provider's 3G USB dongle (smartphone and data plan required for either option). The ASTEROID features an open-source Android™ processor, so you can expect many new apps in the future. One important note, though — the Android processor does not control your Android phone.

Parrot's ASTEROID digital media receiver

The Parrot ASTEROID isn't just another car stereo — it uses Internet apps to adapt to your needs. On a long road trip, it can display maps and even show you in-depth info on local restaurants and attractions. Instead of getting only your local radio stations, the ASTEROID's radio app lets you tune in over 50,000 stations from around the world. Heck, it can even read text messages aloud!

Get connected

The ASTEROID isn't a web browser, but it can connect to the Internet to supply info to web-based apps and to load new apps. You can connect either using your mobile phone's Bluetooth® tether or your mobile provider's 3G USB dongle (smartphone and data plan required for either option). The ASTEROID features an open-source Android™ processor, so you can expect many new apps in the future. One important note, though — the Android processor does not control your Android phone.

Pre-loaded apps

Maps finds local points of interest (POI), then lets you call or get directions to them. You can also check out local traffic. Roadtrip gives you in-depth info on POIs, including a Wikipedia® description and photos. Wikango features user-generated info on traffic and speed traps. Weather gives you the local forecast, while TuneIn lets you listen to over 50,000 radio stations. TextFriendly, a subscription-based service, lets you dictate and send text messages using the ASTEROID's voice controls. An included GPS antenna lets relevant apps know where you are.

Four USB inputs on rear

Four USB inputs

The ASTEROID gives you four handy USB slots — one is dedicated to your iPhone®, leaving three free for a variety of media and adapters, like thumb drives or a 3G web dongle. Connect your iPod®, and you can breeze through its music library using the ASTEROID's jog wheel.

Search for music by speaking

The ASTEROID makes it safer to change tunes while you're driving. Just tap the large white button next to the jog wheel, tell the ASTEROID the name of an artist or album, and it'll search anything you have connected to find what you're looking for.

Stereo microphone

Great phone integration

Parrot's made their name with Bluetooth, so you can expect flawless Bluetooth performance from ASTEROID, whether it's for hands-free calling or music streaming. You can pair up to 10 phones with ASTEROID so your entire family will be covered.

The ASTEROID synchronizes your phone book and sets up voice recognition automatically. That lets you simply tap the phone button and say the name of whoever you want to call. Relevant info from your phone is easy to see on the 3.2" display. The included stereo microphone mounts in a convenient spot in your vehicle, ensuring that your callers hear your every word clearly.

Sounds good, too

The ASTEROID features a robust, 7-band parametric equalizer for tweaking your sound, plus a Virtual Superbass effect for enhancing the low frequencies in your music.

This digital media receiver will not play CDs. If you want to play CDs in your vehicle, we offer a wide selection of CD receivers.

Installation Note: The ASTEROID comes with a European-style plug attached to its wiring harness. You'll have to cut off this plug in order to attach the ASTEROID to the vehicle-specific harness which Crutchfield supplies with your order.

I don't know where to begin

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have now owned this product (Parrot Asteroid Classic) for almost two years; enough time to really get to know it. In that time I have come to several conclusions. (This isn't going to be nice, so those with sensitive feelings may want to stop reading now). Never in all my years involved with music, audio devices, synthesizers, and as an engineer involved with digital effects processors, have I seen a product so NOT ready for public release. I paid this price for this unit and have NEVER felt like I've gotten my money's worth. It has been a constant battle with one issue or another, over and over again until I feel like ripping it out of my dash and throwing it as hard as I can. Most owners of this unit have probably experienced something similar to this feeling, judging from the responses in this forum. In a nutshell, here are my observations / experience: 1. Horrible software. This has been (and still is) the Achilles heel of this product since its inception, including freeze-ups, spontaneous re-boots, audio anomalies, and slow company response in addressing these issues. 2. The very first units shipped were so unstable it was hard to keep them running for more than a few days without experiencing a loud "POP" in your speakers followed by said re-boot. Afterword, you got the pleasure of going back in to the setup screens to restore all of your preferences and settings, only to have it happen again a few days later. The company (Parrot) tried unsuccessfully t

Pros: Excellent Bluetooth capabilities. Good voice-activated calling and control.

Cons: System software is abysmal. System software is abysmal. Did I mention system software is abysmal?

    Great sound nice features

    Pros: Great looking iPhone compatible

Cons: To long starting up. Does not automatically come back on when the car is turned of then back on.

    Great handsfree unit

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

overall this unit is worth the money but do not expect too much from the radio tuner, but the phone features and other features work very well. The unit did not pair right out of the box but the latest firmware flash solved my problems.

Pros: This is a great hands free unit paired with my Motorola phone without a hitch, and the voice recognition is superb for your contacts and searching for your favorite songs.

Cons: FM radio tuner is very poor must be very close to receive good quality radio

very cool but not cool to use

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Not very happy with this unit at all, very cumbersome to use, difficult to make your way through the menus, etc. I have installed a lot of radios in my time and really did not want this one but only 3 would fit in my car and this one looked cool. Do not like that alot of the features on the radio need a mobile data card to use, GPS won't even work without it which is funny because my garmin doesn't need it to work.Boasts a lot of frill but you have to pay to use them. I would never recommend this product

    Pros: cool to look at

Cons: no ease of use, locks up a lot, have to pay to use features, sound quality poor and tuner reception is not very good either

Not ready out of the box.

Out of the box, the installed software has a lot of glitches. Updated to the 2.0 beta found from looking at the Parrot Asteroid Forum and most have gone away. If you don't have the ability to tether you phone for data ( Internet ) then you might not get all the advertised features.

Pros: Good sound quality. Blue tooth voice is exceptional.

    Cons: Slow at times

    Not so good

    Nice sound, but very buggy

Chris from Dallas, TX on 11/12/2012

Bought this unit for the features listed, but most do not work correctly most of the time. As far as sound quality, it is superb. I was shocked on how warm this unit played. The worse part is the start up time. And if it shuts down and decides to reboot? You will probably be at your destination before you get to hear your music..

Pros: Looks, Sound quality. Built well.

    Cons: bugs, bugs, bugs...

    Cool concept, just not ready

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Installed this in a Mercedes roadster. Easy install and will fit any dash. Unit came with a European wire harness that perfectly fit my car. I didn't have to cut or modify any wires. That was a nice surprise. I was able to tether the unit to my iPhone, but didn't really need to. The gps and map function is worthless. It uses google maps to show location so even with the gps antenna, the maps only show up if it's connected to the web via tether or the dongle. The most basic GPS comes with pre-loaded maps! Updated the firmware as soon as I installed it. When the unit worked, the sound was awesome. Slow responsiveness to commands caused problems. If you try to answer or make a call with your phone, it would not work throug the unit. I had to initiate or answer with the unit. Mic worked well with voice commands. Display is great. Biggest problem was that unit would hang. Software errors. Unit would turn off randomly. After a week, unit locked up and display went black. Unable to reset or get to come back on. I am returning the unit. JVC has a unit for half the price and appears to do everything except for the map function. Wait a year and see if Parrott comes out with something better.

Pros: Large display, sensitive mic, all additional cables included, small, and easy to instal

Cons: Slow response, firmware locks up, unit turns itself off or reboots randomly.

    Safety concerns with this unit

GeorgeT from Jackson, MN on 7/23/2012

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Installation of this head unit in my 2004 Pontiac Bonneville was challenging but workable. The instructions supplied were lacking on specifics, especially when attaching the head unit mounting bracket to the dash. Fortunately for me, my son is a body man and had access to a variety of clips that allowed up to fasten the unit securely. The bluetooth works great but have yet to figure out how to tranfer my phonebook to the unit. The biggest thing I have against this is the lack of an interface to use the existing steerng wheel controls on the majority of US vehicles. With the complexity of the apps you severely compromise safety if you try to operate the head unit while driving. The steerng wheel interface would allow drivers to keep their attention on the road where it belongs. According to Parrot US the problem is with the automakers here not supplying the needed information to create the interface. I was very limited on what I could install in this vehicle due to the depth of the radio compartment, the Parrot was one of my two choices. If you are willing to overlook the lack of steering wheel controls I would highly recommend this unit.

Pros: Very cool looking and interfaces with other devices nicely. Allows connection of most data media used for music. Excellent sound both ways during phone conversations. ( The family loves this since all in the car can be heard when required)

Cons: Safety issue with the lack of a steering wheel control interface. Software glitches, I get a loud pop and a system reboot on occassion.

    Love it...

    2005 Toyota Tacoma
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Installed into an '05 Tacoma. This unit does exactly what I needed... Play my iPod direct connect, allows hard drive music storage, and SD card. Who needs discs?? The output connections are great (full RCA for Sub, and front and rear channels), and with a little tinkering, can be set up to sound great with outboard amps and good speakers. The call quality while linked via Bluetooth to my phone is fantastic; usually better than the phone itself, according to those I talk to. Data tethering to my phone also allows any of the apps that require data service (i.e. Maps, Weather, Roadtrip, etc.) to work without the purchase of a separate data plan.

Pros: No discs, USB hard drive storage, SD storage, gorgeous screen, great build quality, all necessary cable include (except for a 3G dongle, you are good to go)

Cons: Menu interaction a little cumbersome, due to small size unit is underpowered and most certainly requires additional amps for aftermarket speakers

    Would Buy Again

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Installed the Asteroid in a 1992 Mercedes Sedan, replacing another aftermarket system from 10 years ago. Aseroid, sounds, looks and works great. I have mainly used phone, FM and iPhone, and all these work great. Unti looks better than anything else (IMO). Most other units looks like kids toys. A few things - voice lady is too loud and I can seem to find the set up to quiet her down. Also, the automatice antenna does not go down as soon as you turn the car off or in any way when running. Only as issue when walking by (damage, grease, etc) and maybe car washes, which I don't use. Overall these are small, and I woudl definately do it again.

Pros: Sound, phone functions, apperance, even value is good

Cons: A few things are not configurable as mentioned above

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I really wish that this deck lived up to its potential. I love the concept and the appearance. Functionally, it is a mess! The blue tooth works great, when it wants to. Takes a long time to spit out sound, when it wants to, sometimes it doesn't work at all, sometimes I have to pop off the faceplate and re-install for anything to happen. The "free" apps only work if you have a mobile hotspot. I am very disappointed with this product, and I am exchanging for another brand.

Pros: Super cool features and looks great

Cons: Everything else! Functionally it is a mess. I hope they get a model that works as described, would be really cool.

    Still in Beta

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Although this is probably the best looking radio I have ever purchased, it's functionality is just not there yet. It takes around 30 seconds to start up, and even after starting up, you then have to select the source, and before bluetooth, or gps, or internet comes up, you have to wait anoth 5 minutes or so. The volume control is "sluggish" turn it, and wait for it to catch up, then oops too loud, so turn it back down, wait for it to catch up and see if that is the right level. The applications are neat, but if you want to turn the volume up or down, you have to exit the application by switching the source, and then you can turn it up or down. Kind of a safety factor, since you are distracted while doing this. The google maps are legacy versions based on the original release of the Android operating systems, and there are only 2 or 3 apps that you can download from Parrot and install. There is very limited support for phone connectivity besides bluetooth phone. You would think that a system built on the Android kernel woudl function well with Android phones. Not so much. I have three, and each had their own set of different issues. I liked the versatility of the media sources that you could choose from, but was surprised the HD radio, now almost a standard was not part of the package. Not having a cd player - well, you don't miss you 8 track, or cassete tapes anymore do you? Not a big deal. Bluetooth phone would work, and then all of a suden drop out.

    Pros: Looks, 6 v output.

Cons: If it would work, it could be great. I really wish it did. It looked great in my car. Now I went to a Kenwood system, and it look very immature in comparison

Parrot Asteroid: Very low power to speakers, and power antenna proble

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Takes 15 minutes sfter unit is turned off for the power to the power antenna shuts off. This is bad news if you are about to enter a car wash or otherwise need to lower the power antenna immediately. I hate the low voulmn sound, the speaker/sound quality is not nearly as strong as my old 1993 original equipment radio. A replacement was sent promptly but it performed exactly as the first unit. The unit was installed by a professional. I am returning the unit ASAP for another high quality type, or to request a full refund.

Pros: I like the large lettering and ease of programing. The unit looks great in my car, but the power antenna problem and the low speaker quality are unacceptable.

Cons: Not much power to speakers. Sound is too low.

Pretty Good but has some way to go

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The concept is awesome and blows any normal replacement stereo away for someone that wants Multimedia Audio, GPS and related web apps. Price makes sense for features and ease of use. Is a little bit quirky and the firmware seems to be way behind the Iphone, whichi is huge since Iphone and 3rd party products tend to have problems by nature of Apple's proprietary nature of the Iphone. Bluetooth passthrough is top notch over the 3 other car stereo brands I tried in the same price point. Alpine, Pioneer and Kenwood. All went back or onto craigslist, mostly because of their cloodgie Iphone and Blutooth functionality

Pros: Bluetooth, best i've seen in afternmarket stereos. Easy to learn the interface and get set up. Great Screen (touchscreen would be better). Sound quality better than peers in the aftermarket stereo. Iphone interface good as long as you keep up to date with firmware. although Btooth audio works too so you dont have to plug in. Plenty of room behing device for cables, and installation without having to stuff or kink wiring.

Cons: Not Resiliant to changes. Unplug Iphone while its running(Reset needed). Unplug Iphone before it shuts down, reset needed when you start back up. Detach face before GOODBye! Reset Needed. Slow to start up, usually halfway down street before music or make a call. Inbound call from Asteroid or the Phone and call audio goes to phone, not Asteroid hands free, but not when making call (Odd). Sometimes spontaneously freezes and resets on its own. Next version will probably be better or maybe firmware?

Good first attempt, but feels unfinished

    Tornader from Dallas on 3/29/2012

Frustration kills this product for me in so many ways. The wow factor slowly slips away as you begin to really get into the unit. Since it's essentially a computer it takes time to boot up, which means you will already be headed out on the road before you get to listen to anything, including the radio. The Maps app shows your location on a map, no GPS guidance. The TuneIn Radio app would not load 90% of the stations I tried to play, even though they all play fine with the same app on my iPhone. The Weather app is pointless. Several times the unit locked up during a phone call and spontaneously reboots or freezes just listening to the radio. Waiting for the bug fixes is equally frustrating - too little too slow. It's actually been out on the market for almost a year, yet these problems still exist. Don't take my word for it. Go visit their support forums or go to the Parrot DevZone to see how slow they are.

Pros: Looks beautiful and well built. Allows bluetooth music streaming.

Cons: Buggy, crashes. UI doesn't make sense in some areas. Support is slow if any at all. Firmware updates are too slow and infrequent. Unresponsive to feature requests.

Cool appearance but software and controls are buggy and can be slow at times.

Pros: All functions can be used untethered. Bluetooth audio and hands-free calling works great.

Cons: Buggy software, limited number of app's. Controls seem to fake out once and a while. Volume control does not adjust volume when in an app.

So far, so good....all the processes and features are intuitive. The wiring diagram is incomplete and not well explained. Customer service instantly cleared up any murkiness. I've been buying equipment from Crutchfield since the early 80's and their customer service continues to get better and better. The reps are intelligent, polite, patient and helpful to the extreme. Very few companies do it as well and I doubt anyone does it better.

I have experienced most of the same issues written elsewhere in reviwes of this product. The apps work but aren't very usable or user freindly. The unit does not pair with the peripherals (3G Dongle, IPod, etc) consistantly. The loud popping is quite startling. The most depressing part of all is the Parrot support team. They are practically non existent! Please read the Parrot forums before purchasing this product. I would suggest looking elsewhere unless you you like the idea of being a Beta tester for an incomplete product. I believe this platform has a ton of potential. Unfortunately, it is simply incomplete and it appears that Parrot expects their paying customers to be their giunnea pigs. This product is simply not ready for market yet. Perhaps in a year but not now.

Pros: Size, it is much smaller than the usaul headunit leaving more room for wiring. Looks, it is the best looking head unit I have seen.

Cons: Too many software bugs. This manufacturer seems new to the mobile audio scene and as such does not have the basics of the car stereo thought out. This is more of a gadget than a stereo. Both of these combined with a horrible technical support staff (Parrot) leaves me just about ready to rip this thing out of my truck's dash and throw it out the window. Buyer beware!!

Deserves a 5 out of 5 for sound quality. This receiver has lots of adjusments for to tweak your system to get the best quality for you speakers. 6 volt amp output is nice also. "thanks crutchfield for pointing that out" Ease of Use - I give the same score. Simple scrolling with the knob. Easy Icons and text to read and fallow. Doesnt take a tech to figure out how to set up. Coolness Factor - Also giving this a 5 of 5. Screen size just right for veiwing. 4 usb is nice "be careful though" this is mainly so you can set up the gps, iPod control, which still leaves you with two ports. More than you will get from other brands simalar models. The main thing on the coolness factor is the voice search on this thing. Works great. I like the fact I can with the touch of a button and sounding out an artist name what you want pops up. "Unless you say the artist album you want everything for that artist will pop up and you still have some searching to do." Value - For everything your getting with this head unit from features to cables supplied your getting a lot for your money. gps, usb, cables ect. They cramed it all in there. Last is build Quality - This is the only one i have to give a 4 of 5. The reason for this is because as other reveiws have pointed out that there are some program errors right out of the box. "Paul" from Crutchfield was able to tell me how to fix this problem with a simple download from parrots website. Update works great..

    Pros: Most everything

Cons: receiver takes a little time to find iPod when plugged in. "gets better with update but still not up to speed" if parrot can fix the laggy issue this would be a perfect receiver in my opinion

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased the Parrot for my wifes Jeep Grand Cherokee, at first I was impressed with all of the features that it has. But it was full of bugs, and not as powerfull as the manufacturer claimed that it was, the longer we had the deck the more problems occured. It would not change the songs as quickly as we would like you would have to hit the button several times before it would change, and recently when we would do that, it would also adjust the volume. A really neat concept for a deck but Parrot needs to do some more work on the system.

Pros: Only Pros, Crutchfield is outstanding on their customer service. And will assist with any issues that you may have, you couldn't ask for a better company to deal with.

Cons: Everything about this head unit

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

So I gave the Asteroid an overall rating of 2 stars because it should not even be out on the market for purchase. I bought this radio knowing it had quirks hoping it would be a little cool knowing that Parrot is working on updates for future. This radio is supposed to be capable of doing all kinds of things but just is waiting for future updates in order to be able to do them. So that is like buying a new car without an engine. To find out when I installed it that it does nothing but lock up and restart when just using simple apps like Pandora and Ipod and the bluetooth feature. I decided not to even give it a chance of waiting for the day when I can use the GPS apps with my Iphone. This unit is just riddled with bugs, cool idea but when you can just buy a Kenwood and have the ability to use the Pandora app, use the ipod and bluetooth, without any locking up it was the smart decision to return and buy the Kenwood KIV-BT901. Also with Parrot making the bluetooth for other Kenwoods why is the bluetooth quality so lousy for the Asteroid, my wife said it sounded like I was so far away when using the phone. My new Kenwood has a bluetooth that was designed by Parrot and it sounds perfect and the microphone is in the exact same place. So the Asteroid had one great feature about it and that was the sound quality for playing music and ability to adjust the sound quality.

Pros: Sound quality for music and ability to adjust the sound options.

    Cons: Everything else.

Overall, the Parrot Asteroid is a great receiver. I believe it still has a few bugs, even after the update. Sometimes I cannot get it to make a phone call without doing a force close, which then a loud popping sound follows, then the receiver boots back up, and finally starts right where I can make a call. I think with further updating, however, the Asteroid will be a top notch car receiver.

Pros: Great sound quality. Bluetooth rocks Ipod connection is a plus (with charging capabilities) Overall apps is great

Cons: Still minor bugs to contend with

This radio needs a lot of updates. I got a lot of the same issues that others have with this product.

    Pros: Looks great.

Cons: The lack of updates. Volume wheel needs some kinda rubber to make it easier to us. My radio also freezes and make a loud pop and then Restarts itself. Bluetooth works well at times.

    Must say I love it

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I must say that I was somewhat skeptical regarding this unit. Once I got it installed and all the cables run, it worked like a dream. I have a jail broken Iphone, and using that with the data plan allows you to activate the android apps. The sound quality is very good, and the voice recognition feature is amazing, especially when compared to Microsoft Sync etc. The Blue tooth audio connection is great, and I love it when it's paired to the Iphone. Completely worth the money that was paid, the GPS function works great. I'm highly impressed.

Pros: GPS Capability Voice activated dialing Sound Quality

Cons: Ford Focus Fit Kit means it sticks out. Sometimes gets hung up and has to be reset

    Really surprised

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I installed the unit in my 2004 Corvette and after I got everything working it turned out to be a great unit. The installation instructions almost nonexistent in the Parrot manual. However, the setup is pretty easy using the Nav wheel and a few buttons and the LCD screen looks great. The voice recognition works great making calls but is hit or miss when finding music. That may have something to do with the way the music is setup on the SD card. The navigation/gps on the unit works good but wasn't a major factor in my purchase. Surprisingly I was able to tether it to internet through my Droid X via Bluetooth with out having to buy a data plan from Verizon.

Pros: User friendly Looks great High end features without the price.

Cons: Installation is a little difficult. The navigation wheel has sharp edge on the outside that's kind of annoying.

Love the fact that this unit does it all without CD's takes my music, give me gps and use of the internet if needed.

Pros: Small size, flexable and easy install, for install on my Hearley I love it! Love the bluetooth built in as well.

Cons: takes a bit of getting use to, but great for what I was looking for.

Sounds great, needs bug fixes and some updates. Easy install. Good price. Has some issues but should be fixable with software updates (easy to do). I'd buy again knowing the issues I've run into.

Pros: Good sound. Great potential. Great idea. Good price.

Cons: Needs some bug fixes. Does not tether, have a gx2 and can't use Bluetooth internet. Occasionally need to reset due to freezing.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased this unit for my wife's SUV and she initially loved the unit. It has so many features and gave her flexibility of BT music, SD music or USB music. We ran into issues (freezing, BT etc) and i was originally going to return the unit. We waited for a software update that significantly improved the stability of the unit. I am going to keep the unit as i see amazing potential for this product. As long as the Parrot IT guys continue to update the software and fix the small glitches then i don't see a better product on the market for the price.

Pros: Bluetooth calling is very clear. Voice activated commands for calling and music are very cool. You have lots of options and the potential of this unit is immense.

Cons: This unit comes with glitches. The Parrot IT guys are working to release updates on a regular basis to improve the stability which is hopeful.

    Great headunit with great potential

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This unit has great potential. There are some bugs that still need to be worked out, but hopefully future upgrades will correct the issues. I did a lot of research to determine the best unit for my Jeep. I definitely recommend buying a cheap SD card and filling it with all of your music. All search features available for the iPod are also available for the SD card. For the price and overall product quality, I am very pleased with my purchase.

    Pros: - Price - Bluetooth Quality - Multiple USBs/iPod/SD card support - Bluetooth tethering - Voice search/dialing

Cons: - Slight bugginess - Contact pics not automatically synced from iPhone - No song search via voice

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

overall I don't regret my purchase, but this head unit has a few bugs. I hope that Parrot will continue to improve it. To Me the sound quality is good, but I don't have a lot of experience with different head units. I am currently planing on installing an amp and some new speakers. I'll try to let you know how it sounds.

Pros: *works very well with my HTC Incredible phone. All of my contacts are available from exchange and gmail for almost seamless voice calling. Call quality approaches that of my friends BMW factory system. When in a call, hear each other loud and clear. *bluetooth streaming works well with some limited control. *voice searching music from the SD card works very well *FM radio reception is much better then my factory stereo *simple ez to operate controllers

Cons: I don't understand way it was not designed to work with the factory dimer switch. Do the French not have these in there car's. When I was installing it, I found there was no place to connect the dimer wire. so I thought it must be handle with a light sensitive diode, but no it is manual. Takes about 30 seconds to boot if the car has been off for more then 30 minutes.

    Awsome Stereo

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was excited to see an Android powered stereo and had to have it. Knowing the power of android, I knew this had far more potential than any other stereo on the market. The reviews, are scarce and from what I can tell, inaccurate. In comparison to what is availiable on the market now, this obliterates the competition. The unit is high quality, and well excecuted especially for a pioneering product. Sounds perfect with my JL/RockfordFosgate system. Definatly for power users and competent people.

Pros: Packed with features! Greate quality product and it sounds as greate as it looks.

Cons: Still lacks some features that are part of future software updates, like usb tethering. Expensive!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Overall, I can't recommend this head unit. It satisfied my vanity but killed my inner geek. There are people who are working to mod the underlying OS to make it great. If that happens I will be back. -Bluetooth- Telephone calls work 100% of the time. Music works 8 times out of 10 - just enough to make you question your sanity. DUN or PAN for internet where a nightmare. After getting it to work it took over 2 minutes to put up one Google map with good reception. -USB media- Sometimes FORCE CLOSES with 300G drive. -Sound- Speakers bottom out. Needs high and low pass filters. -Menu navigation- Wiring does not use dimmer. 1 button doesn't light up like the others. The home button takes you to a menu. While using bluetooth music you can't see the current time. -Build Quality- Photographs of ASTROID look like high quality plastic/rubber but it's more like the iffy buttons on the fujitsu television in your grandma's sewing room.

Pros: Looks. It looks great. I have been in the market since my Pioneer AVIC-D1 was stolen but all that was available looked like it belonged in a dance club. This deck, aside from the huge company name inside the wheel, looks pleasant. Voice commands. I am very impressed with the response accuracy to my verbal requests for both dialing contacts and playing music.

Cons: I was ready to take this deck to its full potential but it couldn't keep up as advertised.

    Cool looking, but half baked

    Fred from Louisiana on 11/10/2011

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I loved the looks and the functionality of the unit. Simple and elegant. The display was nice also. The fact that it is actually about half the depth of a regular unit made installation easier than normal. Why aren't all the head units without CD players shallower like this one? Liked the voice control for searching for music and dialing, and the Bluetooth portion worked well with my iPhone 4. The faceplate magnet is genius, even if I would have never used it. Makes it easy to remove and replace. Sound quality is absolutely terrible compared to the Kenwood it replaced. EQ seemingly does little on the lows, even less on the highs. Needs built in crossovers. Not compatible (right now anyway - they are working on an update) with iOS5, so I couldn't play with maps or any of the other apps using my phone as a data link. At first it seemed very unstable and hard reset itself (very loud pop) three times without me even touching it. After that it seemed more reliable, made me lose faith in it a little each time. It delays the shutting off of any amps (and power antennas if applicable) for 5 minutes after shutdown for some unknown reason. To dim the display at night quickly, hold down the center of the knob. Thanks for the shortcut. But why doesn't it have a dimmer wire like radios have had forever? In the end, I returned it because I couldn't deal with the lack of fidelity compared to my older unit. Sounds petty, but for the price I didn't want a downgrade.

Pros: Looks. Simplicity of design/operation. Display. Not very deep. Voice control. Lots of inputs.

Cons: Sound quality. Missing a few features. Hard resets. Turns amps off 5 minutes after shutdown (why delay?). GPS antenna LED status indicator doesn't shut off, draws needless attention to itself.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a great radio with lots and lots of potential for the future. Right now the Apps that come with the radio are not worth spending the extra money to get the Mobile Hotspot required to use them. Parrot says they are working on a USB network sharing patch but we will see. Overall I recommend this radio.

Pros: The Asteroid looks awesome and has great functionality with unlimited potential for future upgrades. The install with the directions and equipment supplied by Crutchfield was very easy and took me less than 1 hour.

Cons: Requires additional Hotspot Functionality to use Apps which costs me an additional $20 month from Verizon.

iOS 5.0 Note: Apple recently released iOS 5.0 for the iPod touch & iPhone. This new software is currently not entirely compatible with the Parrot Asteroid, as it is not yet possible to share 3G connection with an iPhone (tethering). Also, there are several compatibility problems between the iPhone 4S and the Parrot Asteroid's current software version. Parrot is already working on a future software/firmware update for the Asteroid to fix these problems.

Note: Downloading the latest software version 1.4 from the Parrot website solves this issue.

AUX Input: The Parrot Asteroid features a rear-panel 3.5mm auxiliary input for connecting an external audio player, such as a CD player. The Auxiliary input must be "activated" in the unit's menu.

Caller I.D. Announcements:  If your Bluetooth enabled cell-phone supports Caller I.D., the caller's name (if in phonebook) will be announced to you over your vehicle's speakers. The Asteroid's control screen will also display the name (if in phonebook).

Double External Microphone: The Parrot Asteroid features an external double microphone with noise reduction (NR 3.0), echo cancellation (AEC), and full duplex operation which provides crystal clear calls at normal conversation level. The microphone features an integrated adjustable mounting bracket with an adhesive backing. The integrated bracket also features a mounting hole to attach the microphone with an optional self-tapping screw. In addition, the microphone comes supplied with a visor clip to mount to your vehicle's sun-visor.

Note: The ideal location for the microphone is near the rear-view mirror.  The microphone needs to be pointed towards the user.

Muting a Call: You can mute the head unit's microphone so you can still hear the caller, but the caller cannot hear you.

Private Mode: To follow on your conversation in private, you can switch instantaneously the communication between the Asteroid and your Bluetooth mobile phone.

Note: A call is automatically transferred to your phone, when the faceplate is removed or after 30 minutes of communication with the ignition turned off.

Wireless Audio Streaming: The Parrot Asteroid supports Bluetooth audio streaming (A2DP) & control (AVRCP). You can stream music from your Bluetooth enabled phone or other Bluetooth stereo device. The Parrot Asteroid allows basic playback functions (Play/Pause, Fast Forward/Rewind, Skip/Previous) of your connected Bluetooth device. The Asteroid will even display the playlist of your connected Bluetooth device. All music files will played back through your car's speakers (front & back).

MOSFET Amplifier: The Parrot Asteroid is equipped with a 23W (RMS) x 4Ch MOSFET amplifier. Compared to conventional power supplies, the MOSFET amplification circuit is smaller and more efficient, and it delivers increased power with less distortion and absolutely zero on/off switching noise. More power means louder and cleaner music at higher volumes because you're not pushing the limits of the amplification circuit.

6V/6CH Preamp Outputs: The Parrot Asteroid is fitted with six 6-volt preamp outputs (Front, Rear, & Sub).

Subwoofer Controls: You can control the volume (+/-6dB) of the subwoofer preamp output independently from the main volume. You can also adjust a the low-pass crossover frequency (50, 60, 70, 80, 90, 100, 120, 140, 160, 180, 200Hz) for the subwoofer preamp output.

Equalizer: The equalizer allows you to adjust low, medium, and high frequencies to your preferences. You can choose between a 7-band EQ  (60, 150, 400, 1k, 2k, 6k, 15k Hz) or 10 EQ presets (Off, Vocal, Pop, Club, Punchy, Deep, Crystal, Custom 1/2/3).

Virtual Super Bass Effect: The Virtual Super Bass effect amplifies bass frequencies. The Cutoff Frequency setting allows you to select the bass cutoff frequency for the speakers (the lowest frequency that the speakers can generate naturally). The Virtual Super Bass will then reproduce the frequencies that are lower than this cutoff frequency. The Effect Intensity setting allows you to adjust the level of bass frequencies generated by the Virtual Super Bass effect.

Loudness: The Loudness function is a dynamic adjustment of bass & treble based on listening volume. This function compensates for the human ear's loss of sensitivity to bass and treble frequencies when the volume is low. The Loudness function can be set to Off, Low, Medium, or High.

Automatic Volume Control: The Automatic Volume Control function automatically adjusts the volume of your music to the surrounding noise level. If the Automatic volume control option is activated, the music volume will increase or decrease along with the surrounding noise level.

    Tuner Functions

AM/FM Tuner: The Parrot Asteroid is equipped with a built-in AM/FM tuner with manual, seek, and preset tuning.

Infinite Preset Stations: The Asteroid lets you store as many preset stations for AM & FM as you want.

RDS: The Radio Data System (RDS) feature displays radio broadcast information such as artist, title, & album when listening to compatible AM/FM stations.

Traffic Alert: The Traffic alert option allows the Radio source to be automatically activated a& selected when the current station starts broadcasting traffic information.

    Remote Control

Steering Wheel Control Interface: Retain your original steering wheel controls to manage the Parrot Asteroid, using the UNIKA (sold separately). Thanks to this additional interface module, you can keep using your vehicle's steering wheel controls to change the sound volume as well as the music tracks or FM radio stations. Besides, with the press of a button, you can answer or reject calls, as well as trigger the Parrot Asteroid's voice recognition. The UNIKA is compatible with over 200 vehicle models from 34 different automotive brands.
