More than just a big screen
In addition to the generous 7" display, text-to-speech voice prompts provide more assured guidance as they direct you with announcements like "turn right on Kennedy Boulevard," instead of "take the next right." The highway lane guidance feature tells you well in advance which lane you should be in for an important exit or interchange. And Magellan's route optimization finds the quickest way between multiple stops on the same trip — great for saving time and gas when running errands around town.

Helpful travel features
The included AAA TourBook® features give you instant access to service details and recommended destinations from the leading travel resource. Just tap the screen for a quick phone listing for AAA Roadside Assistance™ in case of emergency — you'll also get your exact GPS location so help can find you quickly.

Magellan 1700 Giant Screen

George from Somers, NY on 8/27/2010

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Big Magellan replaces smaller Garmin unit. Bought the Magellan because of the giant (7") size for giant SUV. Finally something large enough to clearly read the screen. Having to adjust to things Garmin had but have not found on this unit yet, such as trip functions and speedo (large) display. Menu good but I think not as good as Garmin or I need more time to get more acquainted with all the functions. Unit is suctioned to windshield but must also rest on top of dash. If left hanging it vibrates all over the place. Requirement to site on dashboard does push it a little further back from driver's seat and makes hard to reach. Silly as this sounds, a remote control might make things easier. But overall a quality unit. I really like the ability to constantly display the altitude. This for gas mileage freaks who are wondering why their mileage goes up and down. Great service from Crutchfield. Overall great unit for the price.

Big Screen but nothing else

herbert from philadelphia, pa on 1/11/2010

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

loved the big screen but address book lists by alphabetical order not distance a bad thing when you use this as a database to see whoever is closest to your current position. another thing, when approaching a turn, it only shows tenth of a mile, not ft extremely slow route re-calculation unit washes out in sunlight battery power very short when not plugged in. if my wife did not need a unit, and she does not drive very much, i would definately return it, no question about. if you need a big screen and no other features, then this unit is for you

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great! Huge display makes it very easy to use. Love it. Simple to operate and set up. Much faster to respond & upadate my position that the Tom Tom One XL it replaced. That feature alone made it worth the purchase. Oh, did I mention I love the HUGE display! Also like the text to speach that I know many units now have but my Tom Tom did not. Not alot of extras, but I don't need them. K.I.S.S !

Overview: The Magellan RoadMate 1700 is a portable navigation device that utilizes GPS signals from satellites to calculate your precise location and compute details about your travel destination. Once the RoadMate 1700 locates your position and movement, it can then overlay this information onto detailed integrated NAVTEQ maps to provide you with visual representation of your location and destination route. Because the RoadMate 1700 requires no installation, you can transfer the unit from one vehicle to another. The unit is made of high-impact plastic for added durability.

GPS Receiver: The RoadMate 1700's GPS receiver gives you positioning accuracy down to 3 to 5 meters (10-16 feet).

Map Data: The RoadMate 1700 comes with detailed maps and destinations of the United States (including Alaska and Hawaii), Canada, and Puerto Rico, preloaded onto the built-in flash memory. Maps of Mexico are available for purchase from Magellan, if desired.

Touchscreen Display: The unit features a large, high resolution 7"-wide touchscreen display with easy to use menus, maps and icons. The display's brightness can be adjusted for easy night and daytime viewing.

OneTouch Favorites Menu: The RoadMate 1700 has a convenient personalized drop-down menu to let you easily bookmark favorite destinations and searches so you can access them anywhere you travel. Some buttons are assigned by default, but several can be assigned for your personal searches or destinations. The OneTouch icon appears on the main map screen so it is readily available.

Text-to-Speech: As you navigate to your destination, the RoadMate 1700 will announce the names of the street or exit ramps (or both if desired) that are involved in each maneuver.

QuickSpell: To help you make sure you enter in the correct destination, the RoadMate 1700 will automatically correct spelling errors and complete your destination address. QuickSpell with SmartCity search also uses information in the unit's database to limit the keys that need to be pressed, presenting only those which can access information in the database.

Multiple Destination Routing: If you're planning a trip with multiple stops, the RoadMate 1700 will allow you to place the destinations in the order you wish, or allow the unit to order the stops for the most efficient route, saving you time and money. You can change the order of stops at any time.

Points Of Interest (POI): The RoadMate 1700 offers 6-million points of interests to help you easily find gas stations, restaurants, ATMs, and more. You can search for POIs by entering the name or by selecting from a list of available categories and sub-categories. If desired, you can choose whether or not you want POI icons to be displayed on the map. Many of the points of interest, such as brand-name gas stations and restaurants, are displayed with their respective logos.

Exit POIs: This feature provides a listing of restaurants, gas stations, auto repair shops or hotels near approaching freeway exits. You can select one of the POIs listed and create a route to it.

AAA TourBook: The RoadMate 1700 includes travel information from AAA to make your trip safe, easy, and hassle-free. If you are a AAA member, you can take advantage of discount listings wherever the AAA card is accepted. There is an option to calculate a route to any of the locations provided in the TourBook. AAA TourBook categories include:

  • AAA TourBook Information: View information about accommodations, restaurants, destinations, attractions and events in locations near your current position or near any location you enter. (Restaurants and lodging destinations include AAA "Diamond" ratings info.)
  • Show Your Card & Save: Search for businesses that offer discounts for AAA members.
  • Approved Auto Repairs: Search for AAA-approved automotive repair facilities, including hours of operation and services offered.
  • AAA Branch Offices: Search for AAA branch offices with information on hours of operation and services offered.
  • Campgrounds: Search for campgrounds rated by AAA.

Warranty Extension for AAA Members: AAA members can get an extra year of warranty added to the manufacturer's one year warranty by registering their GPS unit within 60 days of purchase.

Current Location Screen: The Current Location screen displays approximate address information, the distance from the next and previous cross streets, as well as your latitude and longitude. To the right is a compass point in your direction of travel, calculated elevation and speed.

Map Screen Modes: There are two unique modes that the Map Screen can be displayed in - Normal and Routing.

  • Normal: In Normal mode, your position is shown on the map along with the time and your speed. As you travel, your position will be updated, giving you a clear view of your position and surrounding streets.
  • Routing: In Routing mode, additional information is displayed, providing you with more detailed information about the route you have selected. In the routing screen, you can view the name of the current street, plus the street name for the next maneuver, POI icons, and distance to next maneuver. You can toggle between the distance remaining to reach your destination, approximate time remaining until the destination is reached, and the approximate time of day to arrive at your destination.

Map View Options: The portable GPS unit allows you to the following map views.

  • 2D Map: Two dimensional view of map which displays the top of the screen in either the direction of your heading or direction pointing North.
  • 3D Map: Three dimensional view of map which displays the top of the screen in the direction of your heading.

Highway Lane Assist: The RoadMate 1700 will display highway signs as you approach a highway interchange, giving you a visual indication of which lane you want to be in.

Maneuver List Screen: Each line of the Maneuver List screen provides details about the maneuvers in the order that they are to be made, with the next maneuver at the top. The bottom bar of the Maneuver List screen indicates the distance and time to the next maneuver as well as the total distance computed for the route. The Maneuver List can be modified if you want to exclude one of the maneuvers to avoid traveling on one the streets listed.

GPS Status Screen: The GPS Status screen uses green bars to indicate that the Magellan RoadMate 1700 is using certain GPS satellites to compute the position. Orange bars indicate that the Magellan RoadMate 1700 is trying to lock onto a satellite signal and no bar shown indicates a satellite that is not being tracked. The longer the bars, the better the signal.

Setting GPS Position: Setting a GPS position is useful if you are not getting satellite information quickly because the Magellan RoadMate 1700 has traveled over 500 miles while turned off. Setting the GPS position will allow the unit to compute which satellites are available and calculate the position quicker.

Customizable Route Method: You can set the RoadMate 1700 to calculate your route by Fastest Time, Shortest Distance, Mostly Freeways, or Least Use of Freeways. You can also Enable U-Turns and Avoid Toll Roads for any routing method. When a maneuver approaches, the unit can be set to sound a beep, chime, bell, or make no sound.

Auto Night Map Display: In Auto Night Map Display mode the unit's map screen is displayed in pastel colors for daytime use and a black background for nighttime use.

Keyboard Options: When entering your destination or other data, you can use the on-screen keyboard to spell out the name of the location. You can choose to use the standard QWERTY keyboard layout, or switch it to an ABCDEF keyboard layout.

AV Input: The RoadMate 1700 is equipped with a 3.5mm mini-jack AV input, allowing you to watch video from your favorite media player.

Rechargeable Battery: As you travel, the unit should primarily be connected to your vehicle's power source, using the supplied cigarette lighter adapter. The unit has a built-in Li-Ion rechargeable battery that offers up to 30 minutes of continuous use when DC power is not available. You can recharge the unit's built-in battery with the supplied vehicle power adapter, or an optional AC adapter.

Mounting: The RoadMate 1700 comes supplied with an adjustable cradle that can be mounted to your windshield using a suction-cup mount. It can also be mounted to the dashboard of your vehicle, using the suction cup and the supplied self-adhesive disc.
