Our take on the Magellan Wireless Back-up Camera

If you've got a Magellan RoadMate 9055, 9055-LM, or Pro 9165T portable navigator, you already know that it gives you reliable guidance and enhances your journeys. But did you know it can also double as a monitor for a rear-view camera? The Magellan Wireless Back-up Camera kit contains a camera, a transmitter, and a receiver. The 2.4GHz transmitter and receiver combo sends the images from the camera mounted on your rear license plate to your Magellan navigator. You'll see hazards, blind spots, and other dangers behind your vehicle, so you can keep yourself and your loved ones safe.

The durable waterproof and dust-resistant camera comes mounted on a bar that fits easily on your rear license plate. You can adjust the angle of the camera up to 45 degrees for optimum viewing. The weatherproof transmitter connects to the camera and taps into your car's back-up lights. When you shift into reverse, the camera automatically transmits to the receiver, which is connected to your Magellan navigator in its mount — no need to route wires throughout the length of your vehicle. You'll love the wide-angle full-color view for backing up or parking.

The transmitter's 45-foot range ensures you can use this kit with just about any vehicle, including trailers and RVs. Magellan recommends that you check their website to ensure your GPS navigator has the required software updates needed for camera functionality.

Works as advertised, Install very easy on my F250, picture quality is very good in daylight, no IR for night vision, so picture is very dark and grainy at night unless area is very well lit.

Pros: easy install good picture in daylight

Cons: no IR for night use

did not work with 2011 chey pickup, picture came and went, sending unit not strong enough

Cons: no good

Great addition to gps

Love the backup cam from Nashville, TN on 1/21/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Unlike some reviews, I love this unit. I did the install myself on a 2009 Hyundai Santa Fe. First, it is impossible for the dealer to add a gps with backup camera. Also very expensive to run a hard wire under the panels due to the way the body panels fit. So, a wireless is the best option. When I installed it, I made sure the place the transmitter where it would not be blocked by the metal of the hatch. I takes only about one second to turn on, and it I am backing up normally, it tracks very smoothly. I love this product and feel it completes the car! My wife has a factory camera and I feel that they are about equal. I would highly recommend this unit.

Pros: Good picture Not too expensive considering the alternatives

Cons: None

The wireless camera with wires

Robert B from Jekyll Island, GA on 11/7/2013

I bought this "Refurbished" directly from Magellan. I suspect it was just a unit returned by a frustrated owner. Does it work? YES, with qualifications. 1. The transmitter and receiver have to be within a few feet of each other or line-of-sight. On an SUV this might not be a problem, as you can put the transmitter under the back seat. The camera has a LONG power and signal wire to allow you to do this. On a pickup truck, this was problematic - the steel of the truck bed interfered with the signal and the image would flick on and off. Anything less than five bars is basically a bad signal. 2. The camera has no night light and there is a delay between the signal and reality, so you have to back up slowly, and at night, it is not much use. Since I am putting this in as a "backup" backup camera (I already have one built-in to the car) this is not too much of an issue. 3. For a wireless solution there is a lot of wiring - you have to cut into the vehicle harness somewhere to tap the reverse and ground wires. Not too bad, but not wireless either. 4. It comes with a new dual power plug, so you can use the old one on a second car. The receiver clips neatly into the mounting bracket for the GPS. 5. The GPS has a standard three-signal 1/8" input jack.

Pros: receiver wiring neat, receiver mounts to GPS bracket. When signal is strong, unit does work. No extra wires hanging down from GPS unit.

Cons: Signal weak, particularly on a pickup truck - need to mount transmitter IN CAB, negating the advantage of "wireless" install. Weak signal causes annoying flicker. No night light - very dark view at night. Delay in signal means you may have already hit something by the time you see it on screen. No parking bars (red, yellow, green) like other backup cameras

Magellan Wireless Back-up Camera

ican2k from Clifton Park, NY on 5/1/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased this Magellan Wireless Back-up Camera for large SUV. It works great with my Magellan RM-1700. Installation was fairly simple and took about 30 minutes. Everything needed for installation was included in the box. Included was a 4 inch jumper that I was informed would be required for the RM-1700, however my unit performs perfectly without using the jumper. The video is crystal clear, and has a very sharp image. A great safety tool for my vehicle.

Pros: Easy installation, good instructions, device works flawlessly. Is activated when vehicle is in reverse gear.

Cons: Only issue is that the GPS must be in active mode for camera to work. Does not come on if GPS is in standby mode.

Not so hot

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The idea with the backup camera with the GPS is awesome. BUT.... the back up camera is wireless, so it does not come in that clear. Not good in low lighting

Pros: Great price

Cons: lousy picture on camera

No Distance Scale Lines

Billd from Williamsburg, VA on 2/25/2013

Good Camera but image does not display distance scale lines. Any obstruction initially appears much more distant that it actually is until very close so it is misleading how close you are to the object until it is almost too late. Otherwise a great camera.

Pros: Clear image with good color. Relatively easy to install

Cons: No distance scale lines

No night vision

Don from DeLand, FL on 2/16/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This camera does not work in the dark.. I got it for my wife who can't see to back out of a tree-lined driveway at night. Mail boxes are also a problem. Other cameras have infrared lighting for night use.

Pros: Adequate for daytime use.

Cons: No good for nighttime use. Occassionly doesn't come on when shifting to reverse.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The camera feed does not always display in the Magellan GPS unit. I got the RM9250 and they don't seem to work the best together.

Pros: Cost

Cons: The camera feed does not always display in the GPS unit.

Convenient but Disappointing

GuyL from Johnson City, TN on 4/16/2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I installed this on my wife's Yukon XL coupled with the Magellan 1700 GPS. The convenience of having a single screen that doubles as both a GPS and backup camera is great, but the quality of the image is terrible. The image is very choppy as if I'm viewing a series of still images. But the biggest issue I have is the lag. When backing up there is slight delay as to where I am vs what's displayed on the screen. I feel that if an animal (or one of my kids!) were to run behind the vehicle and I was focused solely on the camera it could be too late. Crutchfield, as always, is fantastic however. The product was on back order with no ETA for shipment but because of a discount I went ahead and ordered it. I still had it within a week.

Pros: Convenient to use a single screen. Fairly simple wiring. Tilting camera allows you to adjust your angle.

Cons: Poor image quality. Lag in the image. Choppy image. Delay in image even appearing after putting vehicle in reverse.

Magellan Wireless Back-up Camera

MJ from OREGON on 11/13/2011

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I order this camera to connect to my new Magellan 1700. I like the idea of wireless for ease of installation. After I got it, The manual says professional installation recommended. I am very handy man so I did the installation myself. It took me about an hour. What a disappointment. First the quality of camera is terrible day or night. Also it seems the wireless units (receiver and transmitter) do not communicate too well. I keep losing the signal so the rear view video goes off and on. I though may be there is something wrong with my unit so I call Crutchfield and they send me a new replacement. The new unit works as bad. Do not waste your money. It is over prices and does not work. I am sending both unit back.

Cons: Bulky receiver and too many annoying wires for wireless unit.

Rear View Camera: The rear-view camera provides a mirror output, so whatever the driver sees on the right side is what is on the right side of the vehicle. The back-up camera employs a CMOS imaging sensor with a resolution of 640 x 480. It provides a wide angle view of 120° horizontal x 100° vertical, so you can see people and objects coming into view behind your vehicle. The rear-view camera mounts to your vehicle's license plate and connects to the included wireless transmitter.

Wireless Transmitter: The back-up camera mounts on your vehicle's license plate with the 2.4GHz wireless transmitter located in the truck or other protected area of your vehicle. The wireless transmitter is weather proof and water resistant (IPX4 rating). The back-up camera attaches to the transmitter via a DC cord and composite video cable. The transmitter also requires a power/ground connection to your vehicle's reverse light circuit. The wireless transmitter will wirelessly transmit the back-up camera's video signal to the system's wireless receiver.

Wireless Receiver: The 2.4GHz wireless receiver mounts at the front of your vehicle, next to your compatible Magellan RoadMate GPS navigator. The wireless receiver connects to your Magellan RoadMate GPS navigator via a 3.5mm A/V connector. The wireless receiver then receives the back-up camera's video signal wirelessly via the connected wireless transmitter and displays the signal on your connected Magellan RoadMate GPS navigator's screen.

12-Volt Power Adapter: The Magellan Wireless Back-up Camera System includes an 12-Volt/cigarette lighter power adapter to power the wireless receiver and your Magellan RoadMate GPS navigator. The 12-volte power adapter features two mini-USB (type-B) connectors.

License Plate Mount: The Magellan Wireless Back-up Camera includes an integrated license plate mount that easily attaches to your vehicle's license plate. The back-up camera features a dustproof and waterproof housing (IP67 rating) to protect it against wet & dusty conditions. The camera can be adjusted downward to 45° for truck and SUV mounting.

Note: The license plate mount has two mounting holes spaced between 6.75" to 7.375" apart.

Auto Rear-View Mode: When you put your vehicle in reverse, your Magellan GPS navigator will switch from navigation mode to rear view mode, allowing you to see what is behind you; including children, pets, and toys. In order for this feature to work, the wireless transmitter's power and ground wires must be connected to your vehicle's reverse light circuit.

3.5mm A/V Output: Because the Magellan Wireless Back-up Camera system is fitted with a male 3.5mm A/V output connector, it is also compatible with other video systems that have a 3.5mm A/V input.

Ed S Sorry I can not help you. I purchased this unit as a present from my son / daughter-law. They did love the back up camera view. Good Luck, [ MICHAEL J  Sep 01, 2014 ]
I'm sorry but I haven't installed the camera yet. I haven't even read the paperwork I got with it. If I get it installed or read anything I will let you know. Marian [ MARIAN J  Aug 28, 2014 ]
The camera could be mounted on a front license plate bracket and it turns on as soon as there is 12 volt power supplied to it. A switch could be installed near the drivers seat to turn it on and off as desired. Make sure the GPS you use has a video input for a camera - most will display the camera video anytime the camera is active. If you don't want to try the installation yourself, try the install team at a big box store - they will install 3rd party items for a labour charge - probably about $75.00. Good luck. Pat [ Patrick  Aug 23, 2014 ]
You can do that, however the camera need to get power from somewhere, in the reverse situation the camera getting the power from the break light but the way you want to connect it you should choose where to connect the power or just add another wires direct from the battery with a switch to the camera [ URI  Aug 23, 2014 ]
On 8/23/2014 11:11 AM, Barry Erick wrote: > Sure. All you need to do is mount it up front and put either a ground or 12 volts on the control line (I forget) For the backup, you tie the control line to the backup light *I think this goes to ground when in reverse to enable the camera. Install a switch to 12V or tie into the parking lamp circuit. Do not attempt this on your own but utilize a qualified mechanic. [ ANTHONY J  Aug 23, 2014 ]
