Our take on the Blaupunkt Memphis 440BT

It's not often you see a touchscreen receiver like Blaupunkt's Memphis 440BT at a price point like this. But don't worry, this Blaupunkt doesn't skimp on features. The receiver's 6.2" display lets you quickly access your music and movies on DVD, CD, SD cards, and USB drives. Built-in Bluetooth® provides hands-free calling and wireless audio streaming convenience. (Note: this radio's face is wider than typical double-DIN car stereos, so it won't work with most dash kits. Please identify your vehicle to find out if it'll fit in your dash.)

Affordable media hub for your car

Wireless streaming and hands-free calling

The Memphis 440BT lets you stream music from any Bluetooth-equipped device that's paired to the receiver, including music stored on the phone and from Internet radio stations like Pandora® and Spotify®. For hands-free calling clarity from your paired phone, Blaupunkt also built in a sensitive Bluetooth microphone into the receiver's faceplate for a simpler installation.

Awesome video options

You can view movies and video on the 6.2" screen when your car is parked, and it also works as a great display for system and song info. If you want to share the fun, you can install a rear video screen and play movies on the go to keep the backseat posse happy. They can even control DVD playback using the included wireless remote control. Two camera inputs let you install front- and rear-view cameras for easy viewing right from the receiver's screen.

Audio goodies

For your music fix, you can slide in just about any disc, even a recordable DVD or CD loaded with MP3 or WMA files. The USB port, SD card slot, and auxiliary input offer plenty of other ways to check out all your media. The Memphis 440BT includes an 8-band equalizer with seven EQ presets for refining your sound. You can also engage one of six "surround" modes to make your music come alive in a different venue, such as a concert hall or church. If you want some added impact to your tunes, a full set of preamp outputs makes it easier to connect amplifiers for your speakers and a subwoofer.

Bluetooth note: Use of this receiver's Bluetooth features will depend upon your phone's Bluetooth capabilities. Learn more in our article explaining Bluetooth profiles.

Never could get the tuner to work. Touchscreen not too responsive. Although sound quality and fit was perfect. Crutchfield customer and technical support was very helpful. Thanks for working with me on replacing unit.

Pros: Sound quality good. Easy to install.

Cons: Tuner never worked. Touchscreen seemed was fair, had to hit certain touchscreen buttons more than once. Certain English words not spelled correctly.

    had to return it

I should have trusted the reviews! Thanks Crutchfield for accepting my return. For this price you can get a single din radio you can enjoy using. having the lcd display is worthless if no fm radio reception and very primitive BT.amplifier is weak,no tone controls. I did not even try the cd/dvd section because I don't need these.

I'll give it one star because it's cheap. If I had time, I would have pulled it out and purchased something better. The only thing we like is that it will play DVDs. The clock can't keep time (loses 15 min every month), the ability to pick up radio stations is very poor compared to OEM. The controls and interface are a pain. If you can afford something better, buy it. I guess I am getting old as I recall the days when Blaupunkt was a good brand. Very frustrated to have spent the time installing the unit.

This is a nice stereo for the price. Couple of things that could be improved, at the lowest volume setting, it is still fairly loud. The ability to upload my own wallpaper, and customize the main screen would be nice. I would like to be able to remove unused icons. But, so far it sounds great and works good! I have not had a lot of luck with the phone Bluetooth yet, the audio quality is pretty bad, but I have not ruled out my phone as the problem.

Decent radio and good sound on the custom eq settings. Seems to have bad radio reception. Bluetooth is trouble some and doesn't seem to connect to streaming music unless I go into my phone settings and reconnect. The radio will connect to my phone for calls, thats another story. I bought this because I didn't want to mess with an external microphone. Everytime someone calls and I use the built in speaker they want to hang up on me right away because they say it sounds like I'm in a steel drum.

Pros: Nice screen and good sound.

Cons: Bad bluetooth connections, bad microphone, poor radio reception, way too many buttons on the remote.

    Wouldn't fit, wasn't notified...

Brian from Bellingham, WA on 3/13/2017

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Wish this would have fit my car, or that I would have known before I ordered it that it wouldn't fit, but the website (and the adviser info) were wrong. But they they didn't find out until after they sent it too me. I had my dash apart and already had the wiring done when I realized this wouldn't fit in the bracket. Upon checking the site again, it said this unit would not fit my car. I ended up calling tech support when they told me that after I purchased it they discovered that it would not actually fit in my car (would have been nice if they emailed me when they made that discovery instead of me having to do all that work, just to rip it out and send it back). All in all, at this price it would have been perfect for my application, and the next reasonable unit was quite a bit more $. So, I'm disappointed in both the product and the fact that Crutchfield found out there was a problem after I bought it and wasn't proactive about letting me know. I expect better customer focus than this.

Pros: Great price for a touchscreen with backup camera capability.

Cons: Doesn't fit my car, and I wasn't told before I ripped my dash apart.

Crutchfield response on 3/15/2017 We thank Brian for pointing out the fit issue we ran into with the Blaupunkt Memphis 440BT, and we apologize for any inconvenience he went through. We found out after we'd already had this receiver in stock that this radio's face is wider than typical double-DIN car stereos, so it won't work with most dash kits. We were not informed of it by the manufacturer. Because of great feedback from customers, like Brian, we were able to review the fit with the existing vehicle information we have and confirm the fit for our customers.

    Unhappy. Need to return.

You get what you pay for Fm reception is bad. I do not like having to click a icon to pull up presets. I does have good power output. It was inexpensive. But not the quality I exspected from a company that has been around this long.

Pros: Cd dvd works well nice picture on dvd.

Cons: Fm reception is bad. Tuner is weak.

    Great sound, feature rich

    Justin from Maine on 3/10/2017

    2006 Ford Expedition
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased this radio a few weeks ago, before there were any reviews. Took a leap of faith on the Blaupunkt name, in combination with the price and the radio having the features I wanted. The biggest appeal for me is the presence of the USB and the SD card slot. I prefer to play my music from these sources. The blue tooth connection for the phone is convenient, but I won't use it much. Early feedback is the microphone is not great, sounds like I am in a cave to the person on the other end. USB: So far I have put a 64 GB stick in and the unit read/displayed/played just fine. I have found no information regarding if there is a max GB the unit can read. Micro SD: 32 GB listed max, I have not tried a larger size. Works great. Between the two memory card functions, I can have roughly 96 GB of music installed at all times. Sound: No complaints even with the factory speakers. 2006 Ford Expedition, fills the car very nicely. Numerous preset EQ options, along with a 3 band EQ to tweak it to your liking. Installation: Never tried one before. Was easy. I used heat shrink, no solder, clean, easy. The mounting bracket/face plate was just off, a touch to tight. I shaved off about a 1/16 of an inch of one side using a dremel. Worked out fine after that. Also had to modify the backing plate using the dremel. No big deal. Great price, feature rich for my needs, sounds great, easy install. FM reception has been fine. Fits in 2006 Ford Expedition contrary to

Pros: Sound, appearance, features, USB, SD. Easy to install. Price. I can also connect my Sirius into the 3 mm jack, bye bye static. One button adjustment for screen brightness which is convenient as the daylight changes. Can also totally turn the screen off with one click.

Cons: The folder structure that displays when using the USB or SD slot is fairly basic. My issue being the inability to jump from one artist folder directly to a different artist folder. The only way to navigate is to scroll thru the whole memory card. With a 64 GB card, it's a little slow and cumbersome, but not uncommon, especially in this price range. I changed the way my MP3's are tagged, this helped with the ease of navigation.

Cant beat the quality for the small budget price of this unit.Gets good reception and has a great picture when using rear camera or video. Sound quality is excellent. Cant beat the quality for the small budget.

Pros: Good video quality Bluetooth works great with android phone Settings are easy to navigate through

Cons: Send and receive buttons are a little small on screen when using phone Wiring Labels a bit confusing

Great Bluetooth talking, radio reception weakness

Gregory from Lititz, PA on 3/9/2017

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

First one I received had an issue the second day. The radio got so scratchy it wasn't usable that day, but then it went away the next day. After talking to customer service and explaining the issues they decided to replace it. I bought from crutchfield because of their reputation, well deserved as I found out. The new one is working well but it's only been a week. The radio is the weakest part of the unit. The micro sd is great, and the Bluetooth works really well. Soldered harness, but actual install was 15 minutes in Forester. Tip: to get off molding pry it off from inside the vent, not outside where it can damage car. Bottom line, for an inexpensive touch screen this is working well. I will update the review after I have had it longer. UPDATED 7/31/17: The Radio is off and on with reception, it actually works better about 20 miles away from the station, but farther or closer it is static. I think it only works with line -of-sight, basically useless half the time. The Bluetooth is useless for my phone. The mike is built in and is in the middle of the car and I am in the driver seat. Whenever I use it the person on the phone tells me they cant hear me so I use ear buds. The SD card reader is OK for music, but with audio books it skips. On most I can't use the feature that lets me move the play point on the file. If something goes wrong I have to start the chapter or podcast from the beginning again. It is really frustrating. I am probably going to put the OEM unit back in. It will fix the radio part, I am already using earbuds for phone, and I will burn the mp3 audio to CDs again. Either spend another $100 for a better unit, or live with your OEM, I wish I had.

Pros: Bluetooth talking on phone sd micro card great Easy install Looks good Good sound

    Cons: Radio reception

This is a nice little unit. I replaced the stock head unit in my truck with this and like it. The FM receiver is a little weaker than the stock but I don't usually listen to the radio. The Bluetooth streaming and hands free phone functionality works great. All in all a good choice for what I wanted.

Pros: nice bright display, easy to use, bluetooth

    Cons: slightly weaker FM receiver.

    Very pleased so far

I just had the unit installed in my 2006 Honda coupe yesterday so I don't have a lot of time with it yet. I'm very please with the available features in this unit for the price I paid for it. It looks very sharp and sounds great.

    Pros: price for features included

Cons: somewhat difficult to see screen in sunlight the door to the media inputs on the face is not very robust. it takes a little time to boot up when starting the car

Great unit at a great price!

    2010 Chrysler Sebring
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this radio before any reviews had been posted, so it I was going in blind, not really sure what I was getting. It was well worth the risk. This unit is great, for $129.99 there's no way you can get a better radio for that price. The screen doesn't look nearly as bad as some other head units I've seen and purchased, that were more expensive as well. Navigating through the menus is simple and straightforward, the controls are straight forward. This really adds a nice look with the rest of the interior in my 2010 Chrysler Sebring. All I wanted was a bluetooth connection in my car for listening to music, and honestly, this works fantastically for that. The built in speaker for hands free calling could be better, or might even be better if it wasn't built it and could be placed more conveniently. If you're looking for a bluetooth connection (or USB or SD for that matter) then this is a great unit at a great price. You're not getting a lot of the frills, but for less than $150 you're getting a very decent interface, straightforward controls that are easy to access while driving, and great sound, then this is more than capable of providing all of that.

Pros: Cheap (price), great looking unit, easy to navigate menus, volume knob instead of buttons, screen looks better than more expensive head units

Cons: Built in microphone isn't that great for hands free calling, cannot customize background display beyond the default images, bluetooth doesn't seem to pair automatically when the unit starts every time

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Terrible radio reception. Trouble Shooted twice with customer service. First guy we got told us to cut and splice wires to get steering wheel to work. After doing it, and it not working, we called back and got "JT" who was great, but informed us we would need yet another piece of equipment to make that happen. When I used the crutchfield guide and cart building my radio, it said i would have everything i needed to "plug in and play", and that was FAR from the truth. Very Disappointed, and will be returning everything, and starting over.

    Pros: Price

Cons: The radio itself, has terrible reception! Tried BOTH antenna boosters too.

Awesome and affordable receiver. My only negative mark against it is that the physical buttons/volume control/media flap are very chincy and feel cheap and rough. Aside from that, the touch screen is beautiful and it powers my aftermarket speakers beautifully. Runs all media like it should. Can't beat the sale price.

Pros: Touchscreen is great Plays wide variety of media from several source options Internal amp is very nice

Cons: Physical buttons on left side are clunky and feel like a kid toy.

    Good Unit

    2004 Ford F-150
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

First off 4 stars for me is a great review, 5 would be perfect, and nothing is perfect, (Except for my wife). I grew up with the dream of owning a Blaupunkt, any one else remember the 80's. I know this isn't the same company, but what the heck. About the unit, great, but all I have to compare it to is the broken unit in my 04 F-150. I did now want to pay multiple hundreds of dollars just to listen to NPR, books on CD and local stations. I did however want to modernize my truck a little, so I went with a touch screen. I really didn't need all the fancy e-gadgets and 2 or 4 or 10 phone pairing etc. This is the first unit I ever installed on my own, and to say, it wasn't too bad. Had to make an emergency run for some screws to attach the mounting bracket to the unit, but that is par for any DYI project. I did solder and heat shrink the harness to the unit, (Oh read the instructions firs, just don't charge in, had to undo and re-splice a couple times on wires that needed 2 to 1 connection). The mounting bracket was pretty easy to figure out, but took a little modification to fit in the space provided by the truck, but my son and I got it. First time to try it out and the radio sounded really bad, so this afternoon I removed the access panel, and the antenna wire had come loose, so I just plugged it back in, sounds good now, everything is pretty easy to use or figure out, I like it. If you want a good radio and a good price, then there you have it.

Pros: Easy to install, most the wires on the head unit matched the adapter harness.

Cons: No mounting screws for the bracket to the unit, had to modify the mounting bracket a bit, all easy stuff to fix.

    Great picture, bad reception

I got this to install a backup great for that. I only have two issues with it. First radio reception is poor. This seems to be the only radio that has issues picking up local staions without occasional interference. Second is it does not show the song information when playing. If those things are not important to you then this is a great deal.

Pros: Great display, lots of options

Cons: Poor reception and no song info

Solid features for entry level DVD source unit. Simple interface, one touch complete dimming , okay FM reception, decent DVD playback clarity, most common media source inputs and RCA outputs for expansion.

Pros: Features, quality sound, price , ease of use, Crutchfield included install gear and instructions.

Cons: No subwoofer level control , slight delays in menu changes.

Can't be beat for the price!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

my radio reception is also much worse but it helps to take it off stereo and local/distance can help to. built in mic is pretty bad and really needs an external one. I hate that if your in a menu you have to constantly be touching something or it reverts back to main screen to quickly but it seems like all radios are like this. they should either just have a back button or you should be able to adjust the timeout because it is very frustrating when you are trying to adjust sound levels etc. and makes it take longer then it should. other then the couple things mentioned it's a great unit and for the price cant be beat so i bought another for the wife's suv! i paired my unit with a pioneer 400w per channel digital amp and kickers in the back and kicker components in the front. very good clean and powerful sound with no distortion at full level!!! I will be adding a pioneer 300w mono amp with a 10" pioneer sub under the back seat of my f150 to give it the low end bass it needs to complete the sound field.

Pros: eq is great, decent power, good picture, like the volume knob.

Cons: radio reception, built in mic and controls can be a little funky.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Out of the box - 3 of the 4 audio channels from the harness did not work. After I got tired of troubleshooting it, I tried the menu system which was SUPER confusing. There are no controls for your subwoofer control or any built in filters(HPF, LPF). The only positive think I can say about this unit is that the DVD I tested during installation played fine(except the sound obviously). Super cheap solution if you are not picky about having control over your sub or HPF, LPF.

Pros: Easy to install, DVD worked

Cons: Bad channels out of the box, No subwoofer controls, No LPF or HPF control, Confusing menu system, bad reception(AM/FM).

As always could be better, it has a slower response time when navigating through the menus, radio reception isn't as good as the stock unit. In my install it would better to not have a rotary knob for volume as it sits to close to the trim.

Pros: Great for the price point

Cons: Radio reception not as good as stock unit. Slower response time when navigating menus.

The mic is rather poor & weak. Ours does work, but not well. The radio as a whole is very poor IMHO. it was cheap and I didn't have the time to return it. It can't even maintain the time (loses 15 in a month) and pics up stations poorly. But it's cheap i guess. [ leslie  May 26, 2017 ]
check you mic settings maybe. it is a crappy built in mic also. you may be able to add a mic in the rear not sure, check the book. [ Scott  May 26, 2017 ]

I believe it only holds one, I intalled my wifes not long ago and I wouldn't dare put another disc in with it. You aren't goimg to find a deck this cheap that will play multiple cds. However ot does look ver noce and works great for the price. ?? [ Stephen  Feb 27, 2017 ]
To clarify just a touch, the artist and song info is displayed when playing audio files stored on a USB stick or on a mini SD card. [ Justin  Mar 04, 2017 ]
No and no for radio, and USB. Only CD shows artist and song name. Radio sounds good after adjusting Equilizer to your liking. DVD working good. Crutch field did awesome job on correct bezel and wiring harness to. I also purchased the easy connectors and trim tools. They all worked as described. [ William  Feb 27, 2017 ]
no, it's internal, however I did not install this unit in my car, I put it in my RV, First trip this week, works really good talking to people while driving [ Donald  Mar 01, 2017 ]
No the unit only comes with a built in microphone. So far some callers can hear me clearly with some have complained about audio quality. [ David  Feb 28, 2017 ]
no and it does need one as the built in one is not very good. [ Scott  Feb 28, 2017 ]
No it does not [ Terence  Feb 28, 2017 ]
no external microphone but it has one built in near the disc drive. I tested it out the other day it works nicely [ Aaron  Feb 28, 2017 ]
No it doesn't have an external microphone, instead it has a microphone built in as part of the unit. So you don't have to tear the dash apart to run any microphone wires. [ Stephen  Feb 28, 2017 ]
Thanks for your question. The display itself has no variable color options but the actual buttons on the receiver do have a variable color option. Hope this helps. [ Kenny  Feb 22, 2017 ]  Staff
