Music your way

iPod touch 8GB music

With the iPod touch, you've got a gateway to a virtually unending supply of music. You can store songs from your own collection on its built-in memory, but that's just the beginning. The touch connects to the Internet via Wi-Fi, so you can also create your own personal radio stations with PANDORA® Internet radio, Slacker®, or Last.fm™ apps.

Still listen to the radio? Many stations have their own app so you can easily listen to them over the web. And there are thousands of Internet-only stations broadcasting just about every genre of music out there, from the latest pop hits, to polka favorites. And if you subscribe to Rhapsody® or SiriusXM, you can also use their specialized apps to access those music services.

FaceTime and iMessage

iPod touch 8GB FaceTime

Now you can make video calls to friends, whether they're in the next town over or the next country. Through Wi-Fi, you can connect with others who own fourth-generation iPod touches and talk face to face. A front-facing camera in the player captures the caller's face. Your friend's image fills the screen of your iPod touch, while yours appears in a small inset in the corner.

With iMessage you can text to other iPod touches, iPhones or iPads — free. You just need a Wi-Fi connection to make it happen.

HD video recording

iPod touch 32GB video

We've all seen grainy cell phone videos. With the iPod touch, you can expect way better results. The built-in camera in the back lets you take crisp still images and high-definition video. Use the front-facing camera to take shots with you in the picture. And you can edit your HD videos right on the iPod touch and then upload them to the Internet. With additional apps, you can build a sophisticated on-the-go editing studio right on your player, so you can shoot and create finished videos on the fly.

Amazing image quality

One of the first things you'll notice with your new player is how good everything looks. That's because the latest iPod touch features Apple's "Retina" display, which is densely packed with pixels — about four times as many pixels as previous iPod touch models. So what does that mean? Simply this: the pixels are literally too close together for the eye to distinguish individually. As a result, you see only smooth curves and sharp detail, not jagged lines. Retina display makes text easier to read and adds new realism to games.

Get your game on

Serious about games? Then this is the iPod for you. With the new Game Center app, you can play cooperatively and competitively against friends and others. And there are over 10,000 gaming apps, with everything from classic video games to new releases specifically designed for the new iPod touch and iPhone.

iPod touch 32GB

Gaming on an iPod has never been better, thanks to the powerful built-in gyroscope that delivers accurate motion control. And the multi-touch screen ensures that all your finger controls are responsive, no matter where they're located on the screen. At the heart of the system is a new processor that provides more computing power while maximizing your player's battery life. And the Retina display gives you eye-popping graphics with a level of detail older players simply can't match.

Sports fans, unite!

The iPod touch can keep you up to date on your favorite sports. All professional leagues have apps that let you view information, stats and scores. The same is true for most college leagues as well. ESPN, Sports Illustrated and many other sports news outlets have apps to provide even more information. And if you're used to listening to the big game on a certain radio station, just download the station's app and you can tune in even if you're across the country.

There are fan groups for just about every pro and college team where you can chat with fellow fans. And other apps help you manage your fantasy league team, updated with the latest player stats.

All of these examples represent just a fraction of what you can do. How will you use the iPod touch?

With iOS 5.0, Apple has added over 200 new features & provides over 500,000 online apps. iCloud stores your music, photos, documents, and more to the Internet and wirelessly pushes them to all your Apple iOS devices.

Display Features

Stylish Design: The iPod touch (4th gen) features a curved chassis design, that is a mere 0.285" thin. Its optical glass front and polished stainless steel back feel sleek and smooth in your hand.

Retina Display: The 3.5" widescreen Retina LCD screen has a 960 x 640 pixel resolution at 326 pixels-per-inch. By developing pixels a mere 78 micrometers wide, Apple engineers were able to pack four times the number of pixels into the same size screen found on earlier iPod touch models. This many pixels packed this close together (326-per-inch) make graphics and text look smooth and continuous at any size. Thanks to the Retina display, everything you see and do on the iPod touch (4th gen) looks amazing. That's because the Retina display's pixel density is so high your eye is unable to distinguish individual pixels. Which means images in games, movies, and photos are sharper and clearer. Text in books, web pages, and email is crisp at any size.

LED Backlighting: The Retina display includes LED backlighting and an ambient light sensor that automatically adjusts the brightness of the screen for the best viewing and battery life possible. So you can focus on more important things.

Dual Orientation: You can view the Internet, videos, photos, or album art in either a portrait or landscape orientation. The display automatically changes when you change the orientation of the iPod touch (4th gen). The display can be oriented vertically or horizontally by rotating the iPod touch (4th gen).

Note: Movies viewed in Videos and YouTube appear only in landscape orientation. Street views in Maps also appear only in landscape orientation.

Multi-Touch Panel: The Multi-Touch display layers a protective shield over a capacitive panel that senses your touch using electrical fields. It then transmits that information to the LCD screen below it. So you can glide through albums with Cover Flow, flick through photos and enlarge them with a pinch, zoom in and out on a section of a web page, and control game elements precisely.

Touch-Controls: Unlike previous iPods, the iPod touch (4th gen) does not have the traditional Click-Wheel control. There are only three buttons on the unit: the top-mounted Sleep/Wake button, the side mounted volume control, and the "Home" button just below the screen. All of the other controls involve touch (4th gen) screen commands. You can drag your finger up or down the screen to scroll through lists. Flicking your finger on the screen allows you to scroll quickly. As lists are scrolling you can tap or touch (4th gen) the screen to stop the scrolling. Once the scrolling has stopped, you can tap an item in the list to select it. There is also a "back" button on the screen in the upper left corner showing the name of the previous list. You can tap the button to go back to it. While viewing photos, you can zoom in and out by double-tapping the screen, or using a pinching out or pinching in motion with two fingers.

Note: The Volume, Home and Wake/Sleep controls are still hard-key.

Accelerometer: The accelerometer inside iPod touch (4th gen) allows it to detect when you rotate the iPod touch (4th gen) from portrait to landscape, then automatically changes the contents of the display. The accelerometer really shines when you play games, because it immerses you in the action. It's perfect for racing games, where your entire iPod touch acts as a steering wheel, and for tap-and-tilt games such as Rolando, in which your movements control the action.

Home Screens: The Home screen is where you will find all your apps and folders. You can have up to 11 Home screens and browse them with a flick of your finger. To launch an app or open a folder, just tap it. And even if you are in the middle of playing a game, you can get to any app easily by pressing the Home button. Press it once to go back to the last Home screen you were on. Press it again to return to your main Home screen. Whenever you download an application from the App Store, a new icon appears on the Home screen.

Customize Home Screens: You can customize the layout of icons on the touch (4th gen) Home Screen including the Dock icons along the bottom of the screen. You can also add links to your favorite web-pages on the unit's Home Screen. You are able to move apps around, group them into a folder, or add them to another Home Screen for quick access to the games and applications you download from the App Store and to your Safari web clips. You can create up to 11 customizable screen to choose from when you use the iPod touch (4th gen). The number of dots at the bottom of the screen show the number of screen you have and indicates which screen you are viewing.

Folders: The Folders feature gives you an easy way to keep your apps organized and de-clutter the Home screens on the iPod touch (4th gen). You can put up to 12 icons in a single folder. The iPod touch (4th gen) automatically names a folder when you create it, based on the icons you use to create the folder, but you can change the name anytime you want. Like icons, folders can be rearranged by dragging them around the Home Screen. You can also move folders to a new Home Screen or to the bottom of the screen next to the Docked icons.

Spotlight Search: The Spotlight Search function allows you to search the entire contents of the iPod touch (4th gen), all from one place. On the main Home Screen, just swipe to the right to bring up the Spotlight feature. Once you start typing, the Spotlight feature begins searching all of your music, videos, contacts, email, calendars, notes, and even your audiobooks and podcasts.

Cut, Copy & Paste: The touchscreen makes it easy to make changes to text you have entered. An onscreen magnifying glass helps you position the insertion point precisely where you need it. Grab-points on selected text let you quickly select more or less text. You can also cut, copy, and paste text and photos within apps, or across multiple apps.

Zoom & Magnify: Zoom on the iPod touch (4th gen) lets you magnify the entire screen of any application. You can zoom up to 5x normal size and move left, right, up, and down to view any portion of the screen up close. Zoom works everywhere, including the Home, Unlock, and Search screens, and with every app you purchase from the App Store.

White-on-Black: Use White on Black to invert the colors on the iPod touch (4th gen) display, which may make it easier to read the screen. The screen looks like a photographic negative when White-on-Black is turned on.

Wallpaper: You can set an image or photo as wallpaper for the device's Lock Screen. On the iPod touch (4th gen) you can also set wallpaper for your Home Screen. You can choose an image that came with the iPod touch (4th gen), or a photo synced to the iPod touch (4th gen) from your computer.

On-screen Keyboard With Dictionary: You can use the on-screen keyboard to enter text, such as contact information. The intelligent keyboard automatically suggests corrections as you type to help prevent mistyped words. The On-screen Keyboard can be viewed in horizontal or vertical orientation. The iPod touch (4th gen) offers keyboard & dictionary support for English, French, Spanish, and numerous other languages.

Note: For ease of typing, you can use an Apple Wireless Bluetooth enabled Keyboard (sold separately from Apple).

Camera, Mic, & Speaker

Dual Cameras: With the iPod touch (4th gen), you can capture photos and video wherever you go. The iPod touch (4th gen) has a main (rear) camera that takes photos as well as high-definition video, and a front camera that lets you make FaceTime video-calls as well as take photos and videos of yourself.

Rear-Panel HD Camera: The main (rear) camera is on the back of iPod touch (4th). You use the unit's touchscreen to control the camera and to see the photo or video you are taking. You can tap anywhere on the screen to set the exposure based on that part of the image. The main (rear) camera supports video up to 720p (30fps) and still images up to 960 x 720.

Illumination Sensor: The advanced backside illumination sensor of the iPod touch (4th gen) allows you to capture beautiful footage even in low-light settings.

Front-Panel VGA Camera: On the front of the iPod touch (4th gen), is a VGA-quality built-in camera that is perfect for making FaceTime video-calls and shooting self-portraits. The front camera has been tuned specifically for FaceTime and self-portraits. It has just the right field of view and focal length to focus on your face at arm's length, so it always presents you in the best possible light.

Video & Photo Tagging: If you have a Wi-Fi connection and the location services feature is turned on, photos and videos are tagged with location data. You can use this location data with some apps and photo-sharing websites to track and post where you took the photos.

Viewing Recorded Images: The photos and videos you take with the iPod touch (4th gen) are saved in the Camera Roll album on the device. You can view the Camera Roll album from either camera.

Trimming Videos: You can trim the frames from the beginning and end of a video that you just recorded, or any other video in the Camera Roll album. You can replace the original video or save the trimmed version as a new video clip.

Uploading Images: You can upload the photos and videos you take with the iPod touch (4th gen) to photo applications on your PC or Mac.

Built-in Microphone: The iPod touch (4th gen) features a built-in rear-panel microphone. During video recording, the built-in microphone records conversations, music, or any audio at the same time. The microphone also allows you to carry on your side of the conversation during FaceTime.

Built-In Speaker: The iPod touch (4th gen) features an integrated speaker behind its touch-screen panel for listening to your music, movies, & video-calls. There are volume controls along the left side of the unit. When a pair of headphones are plugged into the unit's 3.5mm headphone port, the built-in speaker is muted.

Music Player

Music Storage Capacity: This iPod touch (3rd generation) has a built-in 32GB flash drive, capable of storing up to 7,000 songs (4-minute song average--recorded in AAC format at 128 kbps).

Skip Protection: The iPod touch (4th gen) uses a 32GB flash memory so it will not skip, regardless of activity level.

Frequency Response: The Apple iPod touch (4th gen) offers an audio frequency response of 20Hz to 20,000Hz.

Audio Formats: The iPod touch (4th gen) supports the following audio formats: AAC (8-320 Kbps), Protected AAC (from iTunes Music Store), HE-AAC, MP3 (8-320 Kbps), MP3 VBR, Audible (formats 2/3/4, Audible Enhanced Audio, AAX/+), Apple Lossless, WAV, and AIFF. When you import music from a CD using iTunes, it is converted to AAC format by default.

Note: If you are using iTunes for Windows, you can convert non-protected WMA files to AAC or MP3 format.

Podcast, Audiobooks & iTunes U Collections: The iPod touch (4th gen) supports the download and playback of Podcasts, iTunes U, and Audiobooks.

  • Listening to Podcasts: Podcasts are free, downloadable shows available at the iTunes Store. Podcasts are organized by shows, episodes within shows, and chapters within episodes. If you stop playing a podcast and return to it later, the podcast begins playing where you left off.
  • iTunes U: iTunes U is a part of the iTunes Store featuring free lectures, language lessons, audiobooks, and more, which you can download and enjoy on the iPod touch (4th gen). iTunes U content is organized by collections, items within collections, authors, and providers.
  • Audiobooks: In addition to music, you can download audio books from the iTunes Music Store (approximately 9,000 titles) or from Audible.com, an independent website with over 18,000 titles. The iPod will keep track of where you left off when you listened last like a virtual bookmark, and when you sync up with iTunes, the bookmark will continually update between the iPod and iTunes. You can also set the speed at which the audio book is played back.

Auto Music Syncing: By default, the iPod touch (4th gen) is set to sync all songs and playlists when you connect it to your computer. This is the simplest way to add music to the iPod touch (4th gen). You just connect the iPod touch (4th gen) to your computer, let it add songs, audiobooks, photos, and other items automatically, and then disconnect it and go. If you added any songs to iTunes since the last time you connected your iPod touch (4th gen), they will be synced with your iPod touch (4th gen). If you deleted songs from iTunes, they are removed from your iPod touch (4th gen).

Note: Setting iTunes to sync selected playlists to iPod touch (4th gen) is useful if the music in your iTunes library does not all fit on your iPod touch (4th gen). Only the music in the playlists you select is synced to your iPod touch (4th gen).

Browsing Music: You can browse content on the iPod touch (4th gen) by playlists, artists, songs, videos, and other categories, or browse your album artwork using Cover Flow. Playlist folders, which you can sync from iTunes, let you organize playlists into groups

Playlists: You can use the iPod touch (4th gen) preset playlists or create your own playlists of songs, podcasts, and audiobooks. Playlists you create on the iPod touch (4th gen) are synced back to iTunes the next time you connect.

  • 90's Music: List of music from the 1990's in the iPod touch (4th gen) music library.
  • Classical Music: List of classical music stored on the iPod touch (4th gen) flash drive.
  • Music Videos: List of music videos downloaded onto the iPod touch (4th gen) from iTunes (will only play audio with album art)
  • Top Rated: You can assign a rating to a song (from zero to five stars) to indicate how much you like it. You can use song ratings to help you create Smart Playlists automatically in iTunes.
  • Recently Added: This is a list of the most recently added songs on the iPod touch (4th gen) downloaded from iTunes.
  • Recently Played: This is a list of the most recently played songs on the iPod touch (4th gen) from your music library.
  • Top 25 Most Played: This is a list of the 25 most listened to songs on the iPod touch (4th gen) from your music library.

Genius: Genius finds songs in your iTunes library that go great together and uses them to create Genius playlists and Genius Mixes. Genius playlists and Genius Mixes created in iTunes can be synced to the iPod touch (4th gen) like any other iTunes playlist.

  • Genius Playlist: The iPod touch's (4th gen) Genius Playlist feature automatically creates a playlist of songs from your library that go great together with the song you are currently playing. It is like having a built-in DJ who knows your tastes well enough to make the right mix just for you. To use Genius on iPod touch (4th gen), you first need to set up Genius in iTunes, then sync iPod touch (4th gen) with iTunes. Genius is a free service, but it requires an iTunes Store Account. You can make Genius playlists in iTunes and sync them to iPod touch (4th gen). You can also make Genius playlists directly on iPod touch (4th gen).
  • Genius Mixes: All you do is sync iPod touch to iTunes, and Genius Mixes automatically searches your music library to find songs that sound great together and creates multiple music mixes. These mixes are like music channels programmed entirely with your music. Genius Mixes are recreated each time you listen to them, so they are always new and fresh.

Cover Flow: When you're browsing music, you can rotate your iPod touch (4th gen) sideways to see your iTunes content in Cover Flow. This allows you to browse your music by album artwork. To browse album covers, you can drag or flick your finger to the left or right. Once you have found the desired album, you can tap the cover picture to see a list of the album tracks. Dragging your finger up and down the list allows you to locate (and tap) a track title to begin playback.

Adding Lyrics: You can enter song lyrics in plain text format into iTunes so that you can view the song lyrics on your iPod touch (4th gen) while the song is playing.

Repeat & Shuffle: The Apple iPod touch (4th gen) offers Repeat & Shuffle (Shake) playback functions.

  • Shake-To-Shuffle Playback: You can play songs, albums, or playlists in random order, and set the iPod touch (4th gen) to shuffle songs when you give it a quick shake. When the screen is on, you can give iPod touch (4th gen) a quick shake to skip to a random song. If the screen is off, press the "Sleep/Wake" button before you shake.

Audio Settings: The iPod touch (4th gen) features the following custom audio settings.

  • Equalizer: The iPod touch (4th gen) built-in equalizer has 22 EQ presets to change the sound to suit a particular music genre or style. The presets include: Acoustic, Bass Booster, Bass Reducer, Classical, Dance, Deep, Electronic, Flat, Hip Hop, Jazz, Latin, Loudness, Lounge, Piano, Pop, R&B, Rock, Small Speakers, Spoken Word, Treble Booster, Treble Reducer, Vocal Booster, and Off.
  • Maximum Volume Limiter: The iPod touch (4th gen) provides an easy way for you to set a maximum volume limit to prevent the volume from exceeding a certain level. This feature works with any headphones attached to the headphone jack; other Apple and third-party accessories are not supported with this feature. You can also assign a combination to prevent the setting from being changed which is ideal for parental control.
  • Same Volume Level: iTunes can automatically adjust the volume of songs, so they play at the same relative volume level. You can set iPod touch to use the iTunes volume settings.
  • Mono Audio: If your hearing is limited in one ear, turn on Mono Audio feature to route left & right audio into both earbuds so you can hear both channels in either ear. Mono Audio combines the sound of the left and right channels into a monaural signal that plays through both sides of your earphones. This enables users with a hearing impairment in one ear to hear both channels with the other ear.
Video & Photo Viewer

Video/Photo Viewer: The iPod touch (4th gen) lets you carry photos and videos with you, so you can share them with your family, friends, and associates. You can sync photos and videos from your computer, view photos and videos taken with iPod touch, and use photos as wallpaper.
