Our take on the Alpine CDE-124SXM

If you spend lots of time in your car, SiriusXM Satellite Radio is just what the doctor ordered. Alpine's CDE-124SXM CD receiver comes with the compact SXV100 XM tuner, so you'll have access to over 130 XM channels, including dozens that play music commercial-free. You'll be able to tune into news, sports, and talk, plus exclusive live concerts. No matter what you're in the mood for, chances are SiriusXM has something you'll like. And you can dial in the same stations from coast to coast (and even up to 200 miles offshore — we recommend a boat out there).

And you can dial in the same stations from coast to coast (and even up to 200 miles offshore — we recommend a boat out there).

Unlike the tuner and adapter cable from the past, the SXV100 sports a small profile, and connects directly to the CDE-124SXM for a straightforward installation. Once connected, you can pause and rewind live broadcasts, plus get a heads up when your favorite artists or teams are playing on another channel. And with an iPod connected, you can tag songs for purchasing later in the iTunes™ store. A XM subscription is required.

Bring your PANDORA® Internet radio stations with you
PANDORA® is a great way to enjoy music, and the CDE-124SXM lets you play it in your car. First, you need to download a free PANDORA® iPhone app. Once your iPhone's connected to the USB input, you can select PANDORA® as a source and use the receiver's controls to navigate your stations. You can rate songs on the fly with the dedicated "thumbs up" and "thumbs down" buttons so that PANDORA® knows what music to play for you. You can even create a new station right from the CDE-124SXM while something you like is playing.

Play your other music, too
Of course, you can play all your CDs, including discs you've loaded with MP3 files. You can also load your files on a USB thumb drive, then pop it in the front USB input. The front auxiliary input comes in handy for connecting another portable player.

Boost the power, build a system
A set of preamp outputs provides a convenient connection for an amp or a powered sub, and you can use the subwoofer level control to dial in the right amount of bass. Use the 3-band parametric EQ to adjust the sound in your vehicle, or choose from one of the six preset options. One more cool feature — this receiver works with Alpine's Power Pack, a compact box that hooks up easily to your receiver, boosting its power from 18 watts up to a serious 45 watts RMS per channel.

If you're going to use your iPod with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for specific iPod model compatibility with this receiver or its optional iPod adapter.

    I expected more...

Ric in NOLA from New Orleans on 5/18/2012

I like the compactness of the satellite portion and not having to add another box onto another radio and having a separate control. switching channels is kind of a pain, and I hate the volume control. The volume would probably be just fine if all you do is play it loud as the sound quality is good, but I listen to a lot of talk radio and need a level in between the levels it is giving me.

Pros: Built in satellite radio module.

    Cons: Volume control.

I have this installed in my 2008 Honda Civic Coupe. Crutchfield helped me to order all the installation parts necessary to get this all working, so props to them. Installation was very easy, and sound quality is great. For the price, you can't beat the Alpine reciever/Sirius XM combination. Nothing compares. I love this thing, no complaints at all.

Pros: Looks awsome, Sirius XM tuner included, sound quality

    Cons: none

Noticeable sound improvement over the stock GM radio while I keeping all of the speakers the same. Like all of the features and that it charges my IPhone while it is plugged into the radio using the USB cable. I think that it was a value purchase.

Pros: Cost, simple to order since it came with everything I needed, sound quality is good.

Easy install in a Dodge Dakota Crew Cab. As usual, Crutchfied supplied everything necessary for a professional installation, and the unit looks and sounds great.

Pros: A really great unit for the price. Sirius/XM ready, good power, controls are easy to use, and can play any device you have.

Cons: Way too bright at night, and the dimmer only cuts brightness a little. Also, Alpine forgot to illuminate the power button (source button) when the unit is off, so at night, you have trouble finding the darn thing!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

nice radio setup but the use instructions are a bit lacking. for instance, the ability to use a USB flash drive to play music says nothing about the type of drive that will work. I found the PNY 4GB Attache could not be read but a cheap 4GB from MicroCenter worked just fine. the installation kit, wiring harness adaptor and instructions provided by Crutchfield were top notch and made the installation easy, quick and error free.

Pros: lots of features and easy install

Cons: lots of button pressing to select functions and one line display that only scrolls through once. if you miss it you have to go all the way back around to see it again.

    ALPINE ROCKS!!!!! :)

Devon E. from Round Mountain, NV on 2/26/2012

Love the product, got it for Christmas and installed it that day witch was fairly easy to do. Crutchfield dose a OUTSTANDING job at making sure that you have everything that you need for the instal. I am looking foward to compleating my system with all Alpine products from Crutchfield. Superb job Crutchfield and Alpine, you will have my buisness in the futchure.

Pros: Sounds great through stock Ford speekers, easy to use, lots of complaments, dosent skip when playing CD's on rough roads, love the USB port, comes in handy with iPod and iPhone 4, SiriusXM is really cool having it built into the head unit because there is no lose wires hanging around and changing the station is simple. All around great product, VERY happy.

Cons: The only bad thing that I found is that there is no dimmer feachure but when i have the dimmer mode on AUTO and go to dim my gauges all the way down it starts to flicker so I just leave it on MANUIAL and deal with the bright blue light.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I did a self install in my 1998 Dodge Ram 1500, with the help from the Crutchfield tech folk. I had a little problem with the front speakers not working, and all it was , was a couple wires I didn't know needed hooked together. A 5 min Job. Looks beautiful in the dash and sounds awsome. Subscribed to Xm and it all works great . I would really reccomend this product and the people that sold it to me, they're the "BEST"!

Pros: Ease of install, and Tech help was right on the money, Not someone in India!

Cons: Display is a little bright at night, but nothing I can't handle..

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have nothing to but good things to say about this stereo overall!! It was very easy to use and has many great features. The catch for me was the simple fact that it had satellite ready built an and a USB outlet on the front. What I thought was real cool was the facy that could play music off a thumb driver to the stereo. Crutchfield also sent all the installation tools necessary which made the job very easy and saved me time and money.

Pros: Easy to ues and many great features!! What can you say Alpine makes the best car units in the world!!!

Cons: The only thing that made me mad was the SiriusXM company. My parents got me a lifetime subscription for Sirius 4 years ago. When I tried to activate the radio they would not honor the service cuz they discontinued the lifetime membership. In order for me to get sirius service I had to open up a new account and pay $30 a month which I thought was total BS!!! If you have a lifetime membership please don't get this stereo with the XM tuner. SiriusXM will put the screw to you like they did me.

OK unit for satellite listening, but has some limitations

kyflier from lexington, ky on 2/9/2012

I've bought Alpine many, many years ago. recently I've been buying Kenwood units and been very happy with them. Decided on this one for my wifes car cause it came with satellite options at a good price (much cheaper than other units but you get what you pay for). First unit had issues, but this great folks at Crutchfield quickly replace it with a new one. Thanks Guys!!! as for the radio, I would only suggest this unit if your NOT into sound quality and exapnding your system to nicer speakers or adding amps.

Pros: Great value for cars without satellite radio and you want to add it without lots of money. Navigation is easy and unit looks good. I would only advise you to buy this if installing in a car with factory speakers, no subwoofer and you don't car about blasting your favorite tunes but you want cheap satellite listening. If these requirements don't match your needs, look at other units. Trust me...

Cons: Installed this radio in my car and the sub-woofer ONLY works on radio. When switching to aux, ipod, sat or CD the subwoofer will not turn on. Weird, Not really that impressed with the sound quality of the unit, my Kenwood is light years ahead of this model.

Crutchfield response on 2/27/2012 Update 2/14/2012 - After consulting with Tech Support the issue was tracked down to switched wires. The sub is working correctly now.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I'm very happy with the HU. It sounds very nice, has plenty of power for my Polk separates/coaxials, sub out, and the the XM tuner has a standard SMBB antenna connection so I could use my Subaru OEM antenna (after removing a locking connector). The menu system is eady to navigate one you get the hang of it. It doesn't come with a back bracket, which I found strange. No big deal, just be aware that all radios need to be supported in the back and, depending on your application, you may need to fabricate support.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

My old Alpine unit decided to quit on me. I wasn't sure I would like this unit as much as my older unit but I was wrong. I can play music from so many sources. It's great. I was surprised when I discovered Pandora on my iPhone 4S could be controlled using the head unit. I thought I had read in the specifications that Pandora would have to be controlled using my iPhone. The USB port also provides another great source for playing music. I have always had Alpine head units in my cars over the years and that tradition will continue. Thanks for making such a great product Alpine. Thank you Crutchfield for the fast shipping and the great manuals.

Pros: The install was fairly quick and easy. The controls are easy to learn.

Cons: The only gripe was the fact that this unit is actually an XM satellite radio. My previous unit was a Sirius satellite radio. I had to cancel my old Sirius account and open a new XM account. The only way to accomplish both is to call customer service. The customer service at Sirius, XM or Sirius XM (I am not sure if they are one, two or three different companies)is not very good. Make sure you have at least one hour of free time on your hands.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was never informed that I would only be able to receive XM service, I have a lifetime subscription to sirius and they would`nt change it over for me. Even though siriusxm is one company now. This radio only gets xm even though it says siriusxm ready on it. I still had to put a satellite receiever in my car to get my service, that sucks.

Pros: There is nothing special about this radio.

Cons: Not easy to figure out which buttons do what.

Crutchfield response on 1/27/2012 We state in our Hands-On Research: If you already have a Sirius Satellite Radio subscription, this radio can not be added as a discounted second unit.

Good Fit, Good Sound, Good Deal

Neal S from Lanesville, Indiana on 12/29/2011

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Very good value and great sound. Install was ok except for figuring out wiring from previous owner aftermarket installation. Original BMW harness was still intact but later figured out the wires had been all clipped off further under the dash - that had me going for awhile. Ended up just pulling the German harness out and pitching it. At the end of the day the story is: Wife wanted satellite radio for Christmas and she got it. Happy wife/happy life.

Pros: Pretty typical install; the XM tuner fit easily into the install space behind the radio/CD head. My only problem was interpreting the wiring from previous owner who had installed an aftermarket in this 1998 BMW E-36.

Cons: Car has a factory subwoofer between rear seats - can't get it to work. Bass on head unit is great so it's not that big of a deal. Instructions are thin on unit operation. Not all functions are covered in the manual.

The XM Radio and local radion stations had the same effect, which was this tainted AM radio type sound. I tried adjusting the treble, bass, etc, but still no change.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Dash installation was a breeze...used original 2 bolts from the Jeep unit (Jeep Cherokee,'s "new" to me) Sattelite adapter plugged right in, along with satellite antenna. I soldered all my connections, except for the ground wire for the unit. I'm not an electronics person, so the harness was tedious for me, but I could do it on my kitchen table, so that was a plus....I work slowly, so it took me about 90 minutes to solder the harness to my satisfaction...after that, unit plugged right into factory harness as expected...I'm 68, so I'm upset that electronics need a 30 page manual for operation...younger folk will adapt much faster. I'm sure...overall, highly recommend Crutchfield & Zac (advisor) Jack V

Typical Alpine top quality item. Installation was a breeze and the unit works as advertised. Put it in my son's '08 Nissan Titan and left speaker/amp enhancement for another time. Main reason for the choice was the XM/Sat unit. Simply plug in and run the antenna to the outside. His I-Phone plays all his I- Tunes through the USB port on the front of the unit while charging his phone at the same time. Tha detachable face plate is a nice touch as well.

JoeyM from Flushing, NY on 10/3/2011

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Very Satisfied with this head unit. While it may not have an LCD screen or all the glitz and glam of other head units, it certainly has the power and quality factor to it. Did the install myself on my 2005 mazda 3. The mastersheet and kit Crutchfield sent made the whole job real easy. It took me a few hours because I am a noob, but at the end of the day, now I can pretty much get in there and do the same thing in about 15 minutes since I know what Im doing now. This head unit is making my stock speakers in my car sound like a decent pair of low end components. Cant wait to see what its going to sound like when I put the real stuff in. All in all, if your looking for a good, quality head unit, without spending $300- $500 because your willing to do without the touchscreen or a little LCD monitor, this is the PERFECT head unit. Alpine NEVER disappoints!

Got a good deal on this radio and installed it in a 95 BMW 540. WOW, what a difference this stereo made! My only complaint was that there is no adapter for the factory installed disc changer (Honestly it isn't really a complaint of mine, but others might find it to be). I love this stereo so much that after the 540 was totaled I put the stereo in the car that replaced it. I will keep purchasing Alpine products from now on.

Doesn't work with previous Sirius accounts

    IdeaJason from Seattle,WA on 7/25/2011

Bought this & was heart broken to find out that it doesn't work with Sirius. Meaning if you signed up with Sirius before the merger & are still on that account then you can't use this radio. Sirius & XM have not yet merged their systems so you while you can sign up fresh to get this if you have a lifetime Sirius account you are out of luck. Why is it these dumb companies make stuff for the loser of the 2 in the merger. Sirius had 3x the subscribers & going forward they are considered the winner any format in the future will be a Sirius format not the XM framework. Soon we will have to change to the new system whatever it is & I'm 100% sure it won't be XM's framework.
[Editor's Note: We state in our Hands-On Research: If you already have a Sirius Satellite Radio subscription, this radio can not be added as a discounted second unit. ]

This radio installed easily and works well. The buttons and menus are fairly intuitive and don't require much reading to use. The XM radio and all other features are working properly. For what I consider to be a budget head unit, I like it.....

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I just bought this head unit about a week ago and installed it in my 2008 Mazda 3. I have no complaints with the head unit; it works great and sounds much better than my stock cd player. For the price and with xm tuner included, it cant be beat. The only complaint I have is that the fit and finish of the dash kit isnt that good. The cd player sits about half an inch in the kit but it seems like it should sit more flush. There is also a gap where the kit meets the ac controls. This isnt a Crutchfield or Alpine problem. I have purchased cd players in the past and used dash kits made by the same company and they usually fit much better.

Great Receiver at a Great Price!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This receiver is a great deal, especially since it includes the SiriusXM tuner, so there's nothing left to buy. I also really love the fact that it handles Pandora through my iPhone. The interface is smooth, easy-to-use, and comprehensive. The only criticism I have is that the display is a little hard to read in direct sunlight, and the buttons are kind of hard to read at night, since they use a white typeface on a light blue background. Installation in my Jeep Liberty was a snap, with all the Crutchfield freebies. In short, buy it! You won't be disappointed!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I wasn't quite ready to replace my daughters Alpine CDA-9886, but some low life helped me change my mind when they broke into her car and stole it. She had an external XM Tuner as well. So, my first choice was this unit with basically built in XM. The fact that this came with the install kit and wiring harness sealed the deal. The part that took me the longest on the install was I'm a bit anal when it comes to wiring. I soldered and used shrink tubing at each connection. Still, it took less than a hour from when I opened the box until she was listening to her favorite tunes.

    Excellent value

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Having the XM receiver included in the package makes this an excellent value. I'm also impressed with how small the XM receiver is in comparison to the older models I've used before. The Alpine deck itself is fairly basic but it sounds good and does the job it's designed for quite well. The controls are straight-forward and I actually prefer having the preset buttons as opposed to the currently popular style for many competing models that use one large dial to control everything. Ordering from Crutchfield as always was a great experience, having the installation kit included is really nice.
