I already had a older model Alpine radio in the car when I purchased this new model. Installation was quick and easy. The wiring was all the same. The new radio was put right in.

Pros: I only use Alpine products. The new radio used the same wiring harness. Quick and easy install.

I just wanted to tell your customers that you can get control of the stereo from the I phone- not just the head unit if you have the I phone 6(S). Yes the I phone 6S can be used to control your music from the phone itself. I wasn't expecting this because the spec sheet only discusses older versions stating it can only be controlled from the head unit. I recommend that Crutchfield update their information for newer phones...

Pros: Great stereo. My iPhone 6S has full functionality.

Cons: I can't get it to stop scrolling : turn demo mode off. It's a little irritating. I'm sure somone there can explain which button to press to turn it off.

Crutchfield response on 8/29/2017 Thanks to Cameron's review, one of our Product Research masterminds, Stacey, updated our information about iPhone compatibility for this and other Alpine receivers. We'll also have our Tech Support team reach out to Cameron about his demo mode issues. Lifetime tech support comes with every Crutchfield purchase.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Purchased to replace factory radio. Great fit and easy installation. Tiny buttons and menus were a little intimidating at first, but once set-up, it's easy to operate. I don't use the USB or Aux inputs so have no comment there. A slight application of the Bass Engine boost added a little bottom end for the factory speakers. Plenty of power, good radio reception.

    Pros: Easy install, low price.

Cons: Volume knob doesn't stick out far enough to grip easily when driving. Dashboard dimming function does not work.

    Solid unit

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

A very nice unit. I did not want Blue Tooth.Just basics USB input. I play CD 90% of the time. My last Kenwood lasted 10 years. I had installed an Alpine into my wifes car.Could not get over how good it sounds on flat response. This unit has a bass management. However I don't have a sub. But can tell you if you play with it,you have 9 different types of loudness or bass boast.

Pros: I only listen to CD's this is a great unit to do just that. I listen for 60 min. 5 days a week. I also like anything with bass, mid and treble controls. The Bass management is over powering because I don't have a sub. But gives one plenty of control over it.

Cons: Make sure and look at color codes in the Alpine booklet.A bit different than some. 3 wire changes and it worked.

This stereo is a HUGE improvement over the factory radio. Installation was easy to follow with the supplied instructions. I ended up having a few installation questions that the Crutchfield support team answered easily. Sound quality and the many adjustments allow you to tweak the music to your specific needs.

Pros: Bass response is very good. Lots of functionality and ease of use. I'm really impressed with the look and tactile feedback of all controls.

Cons: Front panel illumination does not dim with factory dimmer control.

Big Al from Rhode Island on 7/1/2015

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Suggested by Crutchfield associate after describing what I was trying to accomplish regarding good sound and price restrictions. What I purchased is a very well made, excellent sounding radio/CD player that is easy to use, looks cool, solidly built and easy to install in my vehicle. My wife is very happy with her new go-to-work sounds. I'm glad that I followed Crutchfield's educated suggestions for my situation. Thank You.

Pros: Nice looking design, robust build, sounds great

    Cons: None

    Excellent !

On The Rocks from Michigan on 6/15/2015

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Replaced an Alpine CDE-124SXM that was in the boat. Crutchfield was very helpful with suggesting a plug-n-play replacement. I no longer needed the Sirius SAT radio, but did not want to mess with wiring a new harness. Took 5 minutes to install it. Excellent unit and has slightly better sound than the previous Alpine, perhaps because of the bass engine. Nice feature.

Pros: Bass engine feature. I also like the red display far better then what the 124SXM had..... I can actually see this one in bright sun on the boat. Simple controls once you read the manual. It has very solid sound, even at higher volumes. Two thumbs up for Crutchfield rep that suggested this unit.

    Cons: None thus far.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The unit itself is great it works and does what it should. The reason I m giving it 4 stars rather than 5 is, mostly Crutchfield's fault. On the details page it says the usb can read 255 folders/255 files per folder. No it cant in the users guide it says 100/100 and when i tested it sure enough it only recognizes 100 folders. Which is rather irritating because one of the main reasons i got a new radio was for the usb, and i bought a larger usb for that purpose which now i dont really have a use for. So to Crutchfield you have the correct information available to you so post it!

Cons: does not play the 255 folders/255 files per folder as advertised on Crutchfield

Crutchfield response on 10/7/2014 We have confirmed the Doug's findings and corrected our database and web presentation. Thanks for pointing this out to us!

    1999 Saturn SL1
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Replaces a semi-broken factory radio in wife's car; it's a big improvement. Sounds fine. Love the USB port; I would not have purchased a radio without it. If you don't already have an Alpine, buy the Crutchfield install package for your vehicle. It has what you need - and probably stuff you don't know that you need. The wiring adapter is great, and I had no clue that I needed an antenna adapter. Happy to have the CDE 151; along with a CDE 141 in second vehicle.

Pros: Alpine known for good quality at reasonable price. I trust 'em. Installation not too difficult. I did it, and I'm mostly an idiot.

Cons: An earlier reviewer noted that changing and setting the levels are not the easiest to decipher. I can see his point. The paper quick-start instructions don't cover everything you need to know. The CD has a more detailed version but that doesn't help on the road, unless you print it out. Buttons glow red. Not my preferred choice but I wanted this model.

    Very good, quite the bargain

Good sound, amazing price. Tuner is good, cd sounds good, but the great thing id the usb port.

Pros: Good sound, usb input for flash drive. All your music in your dashboard. Peppy amp. A great bargain, really. Crutchfield supplied an adapter for my wiring which was really great (thanks guys).

Cons: None, really. A little tricky navigating stuff, but good enough. Annoying volume button - it does other stuff and shouldn't.

Pros: Easy to use and read instructions, great display. the buttons are all easily seen even if you need readers....

Cons: Takes some playing while reading instructions, had trouble getting the demo off but a few minuets and it was gone. No choice on back light color.

    Great sound, terrible usability

Alex P. from Queens Village, NY on 5/19/2014

    2004 Subaru Outback

If you are looking just for a great sound, this is a great choice. But if you want to have easy-to-use device with great interface, stay away from this! Design of Alpine CDE 151 is just terrible. And I mean not a "look" but "usability". the main dialer is so flat, and "ENTER" action is very easy to press without any feedback. So, during the driving volume's adjustment is almost impossible - any road shock have a result pressing of the dialer and search mode entering. You will lose the common "mute" option. Other buttons also very small, and you will have to looking to the receiver to pressing needed button. As a result, you will have no options to handle this receiver without the remote control, but you will lose some options with this. Very bad design!

    Pros: Good sound low price

Cons: Extremely bad design and usability. It's just unsafe device!

Angle Mounting: For proper CD playback, Alpine recommends mounting the CDE-151 no more that 35° above horizontal.

    iPod/Aux Integration

iPod Direct Connection: The Alpine CDE-151's front-panel USB port can be used to connect your 30-pin dock connector or Lightning-connector iPod/iPhone to the head unit. The CDE-151 supports audio playback, music navigation, information display, and charging of your compatible Apple device.

    • 30-Pin Dock Connector: If you have an older iPod/iPhone with a 30-pin dock connector, you can use Apline's KCU-445i dock connector-to-USB cable (500KCU445I, sold separately) or the dock connector-to-USB cable that comes with your Apple device to connect your iPod/iPhone to the CDE-151.
    • Lightning Connector: If you have a newer iPod/iPhone with the Lightning-connector, you can use Alpine's KCU-471i cable (500KCU471I, sold separately) or the Lightning-to-USB cable that came with your Apple device to connect your iPod/iPhone to the CDE-151.

Note: The head unit's USB connection provides 1A of current to power and charge your connected iPod/iPhone when your vehicle's ignition switch is set to the 'ACC' or 'On' position (if your iPod/iPhone has no initial battery charge, then the unit will not recognize it).

Music Playback w/ DAC Bypass: The Alpine head unit supports audio playback of stored music and music apps on your iPod or iPhone. The USB connection allows your iPod/iPhone's stored music and music apps to be loaded instantly to the head unit and sound quality to be maximized through the head unit's 1-bit D/A converter, allowing for a Signal to Noise ratio up to 105dB.  You can operate your connected iPod/iPhone via the head unit's front-panel controls or from your Apple device's clickwheel/touchscreen.

    • Head Unit: The Alpine CDE-151 lets you navigate the stored music on your iPod/iPhone by Playlist, Artist, Album, Song, Genre, Podcast, Composer, Audiobook, or Genius Mix. Content from each category is listed alphabetically. For especially big music libraries, the Percentage Search function uses the preset buttons for quick jumps to specific parts of the list (Preset 1: 0-16%, Preset 2: 17-32%, Preset 3: 33-49%, Preset 4: 50%-66%, Preset 5: 67-82%, Preset 6: 83-100% of the song library). The head unit also offers three Shuffle playback modes (Album/Song/All) and one Repeat mode (song). Newer iPhones with iOS 6.0+ allow you to continue to use your Apple device's touchscreen to access music apps; older iPod/iPhone devices will be locked during connection.
    • App Direct: In App Direct Mode, you can navigate the stored music on your iPod/iPhone device through its clickwheel or touchscreen; as well as music apps on an iPhone (iOS 3.0+). Basic playback functions, such as Play/Pause and Previous/Next Track are still available from the head unit. Not all apps will be compatible with this mode.
Note: Access to your iPhone's downloaded applications will depend on the availability of a cellular and/or WiFi network for purposes of allowing your iPhone to connect to the Internet.

Song/Artist Information: The Alpine CD receiver will display your iPod/iPhone's music file information in Head Unit or App Direct Mode. The CDE-151 will display Track Number, Elapsed Time, Artist Name, Song/Album Title, and Station Identification for stored music and music apps.

    Audio & Tuner Section

CEA-2006 Compliant: The specifications given by Alpine for the built-in amplifier comply with the CEA-2006 mobile amplifier power testing and measurement standards from the CEA (Consumer Electronics Association). All manufacturers who comply with the standard can display the CEA-2006 logo on their product.

    • CEA-2006 Power Rating: 18 watts x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 20-20kHz, 1% THD)
    • Max Power Output: 50 watts x 4 channels
Note: Add the KTP-445 (500KTP445A, sold separately) Head Unit Power Pack to deliver 45 watts x 4-channel RMS of power. The KTP-445 is compact enough to install behind the Alpine CD receiver. It plugs in-line with the head unit's wiring harness, so you don't even need additional wires.

4ch/2V Preamp Outputs + Sub Control: The Alpine CDE-151 features two pair of 2.0-volt preamp outputs. The unit's rear preamp outputs can be configured as fading rear-channel outputs or a non-fading subwoofer output. When configured as a non-fading subwoofer preamp output, you can adjust the subwoofer's volume, low-pass filter, & phase.

    • Volume: There are two volume (system) modes for the unit's subwoofer output.
      • System 1: Subwoofer level changes according to the main volume setting.
      • System 2: Subwoofer level change is different from the main volume setting (0-15); even at low volume settings, the subwoofer is still audible.
    • Low Pass Filter: The unit's subwoofer output low-pass filter can be set to 60Hz, 80Hz, 120Hz, 160Hz, or Off (through).
    • Subwoofer Phase: The subwoofer output phase can be set to Normal (0°) or Reverse (180°).

Note: When an external amplifier is connected sound quality can be improved by stopping the power supply of the built-in amplifier.

Equalizer: You can select from 11 different EQ presets to get the best sound from all your sources. You can choose from Flat, Pops, Rock, News, Jazz, Electric Dance, Hip-Hop, Easy Listening, Country, Classical, or User. The User Preset activates the head unit's 3-Band Parametric Equalizer for a better sound response curve. Bass, Mid, & Treble can be adjusted in the 3-Band Parametric mode.

    3-Band EQ
    Frequency Q-Factor Level
    Bass 60Hz, 80Hz, 100Hz, or 120Hz   Wide 0.5, Medium 1.0, Medium 1.5, or Narrow. 2.0 -7 to +7 (+/-14dB in 2dB steps)
    Midrange 500Hz, 1.0kHz, 1.5kHz, or 2.5kHz Wide 0.75, Medium 1.0, Medium 1.25, or Narrow 1.5 -7 to +7 (+/-14dB in 2dB steps)
    Treble 7.5kHz, 10kHz, 12.5kHz, or 15kHz Wide 0.75 or Narrow 1.25 -7 to +7 (+/-14dB in 2dB steps)
Note: The units stores independent EQ settings for each source (Disc, Tuner, Aux, USB, and iPod).

Audio Enhancements: The CDE-151 offers the following audio adjustments to enhance your in-car listening experience.

    • Bass Engine SQ: Bass Engine SQ tuning is a new feature that changes bass sound characteristics by automatically adjusting different combinations of EQ, Sub Level, and Crossover settings through the choice of seven level adjustments (0-6).
    • Loudness: Loudness introduces a special low frequency emphasis (100Hz/10dB) at low listening levels to compensate for the ear's decreased sensitivity to bass sound at low volume.
    • Source Volume Level: The output level of each source (Tuner, Disc, USB, iPod,  Aux) is individually adjustable from -14 to + 14 dB.

Beep Guide: This function will give audible feedback with varying tones depending upon the button pressed. The volume of this feature can be set from 0-7.

AM/FM Tuner: The Alpine CDE-151 features a built-in AM/FM tuner with manual, seek, and preset tuning. The built-in tuner provides 12 FM and 6 AM preset stations. Stations can be preset manually or automatically. Local seek tuning lets you tune in only those radio stations with sufficiently strong signals for good reception. Distance seek tuning allows both strong and weak stations to be tuned.

    Display & Remote Features

Detachable Face: The unit's front-panel is detachable to deter theft (no face case included). An optional soft face case (142DFC1X, sold separately) can be purchased for this unit. A face-fixing screw is supplied for making the face non-detachable, if desired.

Single-Line Display: This unit is equipped with a 1-Line white-backlit LCD, so you can easily view AM/FM stations and ID-3/WMA tag information.

Text Display: The CD receiver will display the folder name, the file name, and the tag information, while playing a USB device loaded with MP3/WMA music files. This unit can scroll the text information of MP3/WMA files, folder names, and tags. There are two Text Scroll settings.

    • Auto: The information of folder and file names, and the tags are scrolled automatically.
    • Manual: The display is scrolled when a when a track is changed.
Note: This unit has a demonstration feature for its display which can be turned On or Off in the menu.

Auto Dimmer: This unit is equipped with an illumination lead (orange); when the unit's dimmer mode is set to Auto and the illumination lead is connected to your vehicle's headlight circuit, the display and button illumination will dim to a fixed, preset level whenever the headlights are turned on. If preferred, you may choose the Manual dimmer mode setting, so the display and button illumination is dim at all times.

Optional Wireless Remote: The Alpine CDE-151 is wireless remote control ready. Simply add on the Alpine RUE-4202 IR remote (500RUE4202, sold separately) to make it even easier to control the head unit's functions.

Chris B. I'm not sure about the filtering arrangement on the thing, but the sound quality advertised by Alpine isn't what you get. I put mine in a '99 Corolla. I wasn't expecting too much and it met my expectations. I have to set the thing on max bass whateveritis to get what I consider flat bass response based on my higher end systems. [ Richard  Aug 06, 2016 ]
Not that I recall. I have not had the car I installed it in for a few years now but it is a great quality receiver and would purchase one like it again in the future. [ PAUL C  Jul 08, 2015 ]
volume compression.....meaning, volume lowers when braking to a stop? [ Jeremy  Jul 07, 2015 ]
