Better Bluetooth

The CDE-164BT goes a step beyond the Bluetooth features you'll find on many other CD receivers. You can talk to Siri when your compatible iPhone is linked to the receiver, so you can keep your eyes on the road while you interact with your iPhone. If you've been less than thrilled with the sound of streaming audio in the past, Alpine's exclusive processing  improves the sound of streaming music or stored music files sent from your device to the receiver.

More cool options

If you're looking to add some punch to your tunes, press the Bass Engine SQ button for easy access to the receiver's extensive low-frequency controls, including bass profiles that you can customize through the TuneIt app. If you're active on Facebook, this receiver will read the latest posts to you while you concentrate on the road. And if you're tired of having that great FM station fade away, you can add an optional SiriusXM satellite radio tuner to enjoy an unparalleled variety of music, news, sports, and talk programming that follows you wherever you drive.

Want to keep your steering wheel controls?

In most cars, you'll need an adapter to retain those controls with this car stereo. Connect a few wires, then program the adapter for your particular car and radio, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls. You'll see the adapters that work with your vehicle when you add this receiver to your cart.

Outstanding Sound, Features, and Audio Customization

Ian from Parkersburg, WV on 3/14/2018

    2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Superb Sound and customization options. Paired with the outstanding services of Crutchfield by pairing required installation mediums this was purchased, received the next day, and installed in 20 minutes. Add an additional 10 minutes for tweak time for the audio as an audiophile programmer I am completely and utterly satisfied.

Pros: Audio Customization Options Audio Range With Crutchfield suggested installation mediums, install was painless and quick (20 mins). Factory Amplifier (Infinity, BOSE, Mongoose) handled correctly.

    Cons: Absolutely NONE!

I liked it so much that we decided to buy a second unit for our truck. The stereo seems to work well with the IPhone. Calling through it also worked very well with everyone saying they could here us very well (we use verizon). I did want the next model up when I bought this the first time but it would not fit in my Yukon. But really this turned out for the best. I am sure we still have not used all its features.

should be better since it's alpine

Sampson from Ft Bragg, CA on 1/29/2018

    2008 Toyota Tacoma

I have always been a fan of alpine. Previously had an alpine tape deck, then cd player with an alpine amp and other brand sub with alpine speakers all around. My favorite of all was my previous alpine cd deck that was Siriusxm compatible and mp3/wma compatible. That deck stood the test of time and abuse through many dusty roads and no cleaning. I even removed it when I bought a new truck and put it in my new one. It lasted 10 years, cd's/mp3 still played however my Siriusxm block died and I decided to replace both units since I would need to take the deck out anyway and it was 10 years old. MISTAKE? Maybe so, or I'm hoping that maybe I just got a lemon. I purchased this deck because it's Sirius and mp3/wma compatible as I have all my music stacked into mp3's. First off almost everything on the unit is great, works great. CONS: It does not like to play mp3's very well. It's not the discs I use, I've tried different brands, and even one disc will have issues on folder 1 track 2,3,and4 (skipping/not playing) but good on the rest. Then the next day those same exact tracks play fine but it has a problem playing some other tracks. It's sporatic with no rhyme nor reason. Very frustrating The equalizer app is junk. It sets it fine but next thing I know, it sounds funny and look, the equalizer is reset to 0's. Not too big of deal as you can manually adjust. Overall: I love alpine and this won't change my feelings, as long as the next one I buy work

Pros: Besides the mp3/wma issue I have it's a great unit, nothing to complain about

Cons: With a dysfunctional mp3/wma player, I cannot recommend this unit. Due to how much music I listen to as mp3/wma I now need to purchase another unit.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased this to replace an older Alpine double DIN unit that started going bad. After doing some research, I was confident it would swap out and be able to use the old wiring connector, mic, and antenna adapter. That did in fact work out as I had hoped. In my application, ('09 Ford van), it is quite a chore to remove the dash panel. This single DIN unit, once installed, can be removed without taking everything apart again which came in handy right away because the CD player was not working on the new unit. Crutchfield quickly took care of the trouble and I had a replacement in a couple days. That was with only a few short minutes on the phone with them. This unit sounds good out of the box. Some tweaking has it sounding even better. The music sounds great and the BT phone conversations are very acceptable. You can adjust the mic gain and speaker volume level for calls if needed. There are also a couple call profiles to help improve the sound in various situations, but I didn't need to fiddle with them. Being a single DIN unit, the buttons and display are smaller than on the comparable unit that is double DIN, but I knew that and decided to save the bucks between the two. Really no regrets there. Not bad, just smaller. One thing that does bug me though: I generally listen to my own music either on a thumb drive or a CD I have burned. I often pause the music while I do work. If I use the phone, it will resume play at the end of the call, even if it was p

Pros: Crutchfield service. Good sound and, for me, easy setup.

Cons: CD/MP3 play will resume playing when call terminates even if it was paused before hand.

Great modern upgrade for a BMW Z3

    Warren from CA on 8/7/2017

    2000 BMW Z3
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

BMW Z3 owners: look no further than this unit for a thoroughly modern upgrade. First, don't pay any attention to the installation warning about removing the rear support bracket: this HU fits the Z3 like a glove with no mods necessary. The display colors can match internal lighting and colors perfectly, and is fully visibly in direct sunlight with the top down. Sound and power are excellent, and the 9-band EQ is a godsend to tuning the sound for the Z3's weird little cabin. Android Bluetooth connectivity is amazing - it automatically syncs to my phone and fires up Spotify just by walking into the car with my phone. Nice bonus: it displays artist/title info from FM broadcasts, CDs, MP3s, and Spotify/Bluetooth. The only negative is that the Input Select button is about as bright as looking directly into the Sun - a piece of Window Tinting applied to the button solved that problem, but applying it properly can be tricky.

I had to replace my OEM stereo in my 2009 Toyota Tacoma, I chose the Alpine CDE-164BT, It would have been nice to have a hard copy of an owners manual, but it came with a CD. Control and setup of the unit is proving to be a challenge as the buttons are small and i am getting old. I am very pleased with it's sound quality & performance. I would recommend this unit to a friend or any Toyota Tacoma truck owner.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

So far I absolutely love this head unit. I replaced the factory unit in a 2001 Porsche Boxster. The Alpine unit went in with no problem and the fit and finish looks like it could be the factory install. The sound is great and the only bump was a rare factory installed rear deck speaker set in my vehicle. The wiring harness was not configured properly for this and I had to rewire the harness a bit to make it work, but it was a small thing. I'm now upgrading the speakers on the rear deck and will look to do the doors and dash speakers soon. Great value for the money.

Pros: Ease of install, features, bluetooth phone connectivity and still with the CD player for a dinosaur like me who still likes to spin CD's in the car

Cons: Complex features setup and operations. I simply printed off a copy of the manual and keep it handy in the car with me.

Great head unit with many cool features as expected with Alpine. Buying from Crutchfield was a good choice, my order came quickly and shipping was free. The head unit was priced slightly higher than big box stores but it came with needed installation items at no cost making it less expensive in the end. Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I had to replace the Infinity head unit when the CD changer stopped reading CD's. The sound quality improved significantly in spite of using stock speakers and amplifier. Installation was easy although instructions regarding how to hook up the power antenna wire (don't) should have been included. Thankfully I called tech support before connecting the harness and avoided a potential problem. Blue light display a bit difficult to see in bright conditions. Otherwise, I have found no downsides.

Pros: Great sound and features. Love the addition of hands free calling and USB thumb drive to my vehicle.

Cons: Somewhat difficult to read display in bright conditions. Crutchfield should consider including instructions for harness wiring, particularly when it isn't as easy as connecting same color wires.

    1998 Mercedes-Benz SL-Class
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Crutchfield technical support was outstanding throughout the installation process/issues. After initial wiring of the unit, there was a popping noise when using the input selector. Crutchfield immediately sent a new unit, no change, still popping. Crutchfield then sent PAC SNI-1 ground loop isolators...problem fixed almost. At this point, everything wired, sounding good, ready to slide into dash. Unless there is something I couldn't figure out, the unit will not fit into a 1998 SL500 with RCA plugs going into the back of the head unit...there is not enough room before the RCA jacks extending out of the back of the unit run into A/C ducting in the back of the hole. So now I have great sound, but cannot install. I attempted to use 90 degree RCA adapters, with no success. Crutchfield then sent a pair of line out converters that use the unit's speaker wires and converts them to preamp levels for the RCA connectors to the Metra harness...Success! There are a lot of wiring parts/pieces to push in before the head unit, but there is room for all of that to "fall" out of the way and allow the unit to lock in place. Unit sounds great. Have not used any of the higher end sound settings, just the presets. Mercedes antenna functions normally, however, you lose the OEM feature of being able to turn the unit on without the key in the ignition. There would be no issue of undoing this installation and reinstalling the OEM unit.

Pros: Good modern day unit with some very good sound and features to update older unit. With the wiring configuration described, no shortage of power for the stock Bose speakers.

Cons: Again, talk to Crutchfield tech support about connecting options before buying...I don't think their standard accessory package will work.

    Great 1DIN stereo

TomH from southlake, TX on 1/29/2016

Well this was dropped into the Corvette I purchased in 2002. The C5 likes a 1 1/2 DIN size. This unit is a 1 DIN and looks fine with the bezel adapter. I considered a unit with a 7 inch screen but didn't want the mechanical complexity of retracting it and didn't want it blocking the AC flow. Sonically the unit sounds good dropped in with the 9 band parametric eq. dialed in. My wife shared that the phone audio is much clearer than my 2015 Toyota Highlander, a surprise. The unit loads contacts limited to 1,000 and allows favorites to be set using the tuner preset buttons. So far, the Bluetooth connecting has been flawless. I'm an analog guy and don't like the current trend of tiny buttons and displays this unit has, but almost all 1 DIN units have this shortcoming. Finally the unit has 3 colored LEDs which you can balance to match the illumination of your car's dash.

    Pros:

    Cons:

    Impossible. Unmanageable.

Ed from New York on 10/28/2015

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

My previous experiences buying from Crutchfield were good the phone advisers helpful. Not this time. I spoke to several before buying this saying I wanted something not too complicated. One Crutchfield rep told me this would suit me and that the screen was easy to read.. It is neither. The experience of setting it up is awful. The manual is awful. Nothing is written in plain language. For example, the main knob for selecting functions and volume is referred to as the " rotary encoder ". I'm still using it as it came since I can't get it out of "Demo Mode". It does not respond to attempts to change it.. Plus, it mentions somewhere in the manual--which is online only--that all settings are lost if your car battery is disconnected for service. So even you'd managed to get the setup to work once, you'd have to do it again every time you need work on your truck. I regret buying it. It constantly shines a bright light from one area that can barely be dimmed. I've had to tape paper over it to allow night driving. I can't comment on sound quality since I have not been able to adjust the darn thing. Also, you need a magnifying glass to read function label random symbols & tiny display letters which randomly change colors to make it even harder.I wish I could return it.But I was ill for a while & I'm afraid I missed the deadline. I'm disappointed in Crutchfield for the first time.

Pros: Unknown since it won't move out of "Demo mode" and the manual is gibberish. Protects you from phone distractions since Bluetooth rarely works.

Cons: Impossible setup manual that you must print . Poor readability of screen. Setup instructions are such a mess that I cannot get it out of "Demo Mode" or it is defective.Permanent glaring bright light that makes night driving unpleasant. Looses settings if your car battery is disconnected for service --not that I've been able to set anything! . Refuses to maintain pairing with my iphone, although it might pair for a while, it then drops the connection while driving. I hate it.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The radio itself seems really well built and as would be expected from Alpine, has a ton of features. Looks great and sounds awesome. Had a few installation issues but the Crutchfield tech service aided me with those and the radio works great. Plenty of cool features to be had and the customization settings are awesome. The Bluetooth is not what I was hoping for though. Connected signal strength is never full strength, even when the phone sits 2 inches from the unit. The microphone has some issues with background noise so be careful where you place it. I have three phones paired to the unit but the others will not connect automatically, I have to select the unit and connect. When I go back with my primary phone, same scenario. If a phone is paired it should connect when available. Hands free calling is also a disappointment. When I use the radio to make a hands free call the sound does not come through the speakers. If I use the Siri the sounds comes through the speakers. Otherwise i have to scroll through the call list or phone book on the radio and that is a safety issue. My only other complaint is that I cannot find a mute button to mute the audio. If it is there, it is really well hidden. It would be nice to mute the audio instead of having to turn the volume down.

Pros: Looks great. Sounds great. More features that you need. More customization ability than you need.

Cons: Bluetooth system is not without flaws. Hands free calling is not really hands free. No mute button.

    Allaround great unit

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Overall very pleased with this stereo. Among other things, bought it to retro fit into a 91 Chrysler LeBaron convertible with a green LED dash (remember Back to the Future?) and was able to match the color with the unit's variable color display. Bluetooth "hands free" phone sound was a deal maker/breaker for me. The stereo has proven to be exceptional in sound quality both directions! And that's saying a heck of a lot in a convertible!! Remote microphone really helps to pickup with clarity. I use the tuning app on my iPhone 6 and really like that feature. I don't think I could ever set the equalizer on the unit itself whereas hooking up the phone, starting Pandora and then tuning the sounds really makes for fantastic listening in my rides with either top up or down. And as for parking with the top down, the detachable face comes in handy.

Pros: Versatility - Single DIN, variable color display, good built in amp but preamp capability, front USB and aux ports GREAT HANDS FREE SOUND QUALITY BOTH DIRECTIONS Great listening experience Detachable face

Cons: Some of the print on the face is small for the bifocal set.

Bought this head unit after my stock radio crapped out, my family has always used alpine products and the sound and build quality continues on with this model. I would recommend this unit to anyone.

Pros: Sound quality, tons of features, price

Cons: This unit does so much its tough to remember all the different settings, but thats just because its so new to me. Other than that nothing else bad I can say.

Researched, researched and researched. After much decision and a little reassurance from Andy (Crutchfield Team Expert), I decided on the Alpine CDE164-BT head unit. It is awesome! It sounds great, has all the features I need plus a few more. Very happy with my purchase.

Pros: Easy to install, sounds great (my install is just a factory replacement, no sub or extra amps). Bluetooth sets up easily and work great.

Cons: Didn't care for the "Tune it App". CDE-164BT doesn't show up as a supported device.

    Sooo Clean Sounding

TominMichigan from Troy Michigan on 5/31/2015

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

    1. 9 bands of Parametric Eq is the main reason I chose Alpine. Nobody else is putting sound quality first right now. 2. The level of clarity this unit puts out and the excellent sound stage produced have me sming every time I use it, driving the long way home and when certain songs come on, in awe. Alpine seems to have extra clarity in the lower high frequency area. 3. As mentioned in the Pros, I tried a Kenwood Excelon X799 which is supposed to be a top model but was very disappointed in its mediocre sound. Even after tuning it with my mic and RTA program. The Alpine UTE-52BT I had before the Kenwood also blew the Excelon away in sound clarity. 6. Skipping to Navigation, all menus makes sense and the quick access to the sound menu by pressing the "bass" button is appreciated. I am very satisfied with this unit,I actually look forward to my drives haha so I can listen to it. Crutchfield was gracious enough to take back my Alpine UTE-52BT which I had Bluetooth issues with and then took back the Kenwood X799 I was unhappy with. So here I am with this unit and am extremely satisfied. If you want to hear really clear music even with just 4-6.5" speakers listen to the Pandora Channel "Hans Zimmer". It's all movie soundtrack stuff but really hits all the ranges of sound. You can try my Eq setting in Tune-It if you go to Find Tunings>Search >Search Parameters>Keyword and type in "Teeflyn" then select the 6.5" Bass and Treble. :D

Pros: 1. 9 band *Parametric* Eq, needs no further explaining. 2. Extremely clear and detailed sound 3. *Way* better sounding than the Kenwood Excelon KDC-X799 4. Screen readable in Sunlight(at least with the white background). 5. Color Combos nice, no childish flashy light bs. 6. Easy to Navigate, Tune-It also is cool

Cons: --User Eq setting disappears on Head Unit if switched to another one. It requires connecting the Phone, opening Tune-it *STOPPING THE VEHICLE* and loading them back it. PITA. There either needs to be onboard memory or a passenger mode for Tune-it. Very un-user friendly there. --The Metal Sleeve on this unit and the previous Alpine UTE-52bt I had, both have the same issue. The LH hole on the Head Unit needs a light filing to enlarge the hole so the spring arm of the Sleeve can lock in fully.

    Built-in Bluetooth

Bluetooth Technology: The Alpine CDE-164BT features built-in Bluetooth (ver. 2.1+EDR) technology. The head unit's built-in Bluetooth allows you to make and receive phone calls wirelessly through the receiver; as well as stream music wirelessly from your smartphone to the head unit. In order to use Bluetooth wireless technology, your phone must also be Bluetooth compatible and be able to interpret certain profiles. This unit is compatible with the following Bluetooth Profiles:

    • Hands-Free Communication: HFP 1.5 (Hands Free Profile), HSP (Head Set Profile), OPP 1.1 (Object Push Profile), PBAB 1.0 (Phone Book Access Profile).
    • Audio Streaming: A2DP 1.2 (Advanced Audio Distribution Profile), AVRCP 1.4 (Audio/Video Remote Control Profile).
Note: Due to the differences in Bluetooth technology, some Bluetooth enabled devices may be incompatible, function improperly, or may not support all features when used with the Alpine CDE-164BT.

Secure Simple Pairing (SSP) + Auto Pairing (for iPhone): With Secure Simple Pairing (SSP), you can easily pair a Bluetooth enabled phone to the Alpine CDE-164BT without having to enter pin codes or go through complicated settings. When a registered Bluetooth device is in close proximity to the receiver, the auto connection function automatically pairs the two units. You can register up to three Bluetooth-enabled devices with the Alpine head unit (only one device can be used at a time). You can also pair your Apple iPhone (iOS 5.0+) by simply connecting it to the Alpine head unit via USB and following a single prompt on the head unit's display.

Hands-Free Communication: The head unit supports Bluetooth hands-free communication for your Bluetooth enabled mobile phone (including iPhone & Android). The controls of the CDE-164BT can be used to dial a number, answer an in-coming call, or end a call. The unit also includes an external microphone, so you can carry on your side of the conversation while listening to the caller through your vehicles speakers. During a conversation, you can initiate a transfer of audio between your mobile phone and your car's speakers.

    • Receiving Calls: The Alpine CDE-164BT provides a couple ways to answer your phone calls without picking up your mobile phone. Incoming calls are announced by a caller ring tone through your vehicle's speakers (music will be muted) & a Caller ID message across your Alpine head unit's display.
      • Manual Answer: Manually answer an incoming call by pressing the "Phone" button on your Alpine head unit.
      • Automatic Answer: Set the Alpine head unit to answer the incoming call automatically; when a call is received, it is answered automatically after approximately 5 seconds.
      • Call Waiting: If a second call is received during a current call, you can have the first caller wait momentarily while you take the second call. When you are finished with one call, you can switch to the other.
    • Placing Calls: The Alpine CDE-164BT provides a variety of functions for placing a phone call without using your mobile phone. The Alpine CDE-164BT features full phone book access, call history, voice tag dialing, and redial with compatible phones.
      • Voice Dialing: If you have a voice-dial capable phone, you can dial a phone contact by simply speaking the name of your contact.
      • Phonebook (with ABC search): Up to 1,000 contacts (5 telephone numbers for each name) can be downloaded from your compatible mobile phone. You can select the first 3 call letters (ABC) to search for a desired name in your phonebook.
      • Preset Dialing: You can assign phone numbers that you dial frequently to presets (1-6) for quick recall. You can assign up to six frequently called phone numbers. A total of 18 phone numbers can be stored in the preset memory (6 numbers for each mobile phone paired).
      • Call History: The previously dialed, received, or missed numbers (20 each) can be retrieved and dialed from memory.
Note: The external microphone is tuned and engineered to reduce noise interference and feedback. This allows optimal placement in your car, for the best possible sound quality. The external microphone measures 0.5625" (diameter) x 1.625" (deep); and features an attached 13' cable terminated by a right-angle male 3.5mm connector.

Audio Streaming (w/ Advanced Music Navigation): The Alpine CDE-164BT can stream music from your Bluetooth A2DP/AVRCP mobile device. Not only can it control & stream your music through Bluetooth, it can process your music using its built-in DSP Sound Expansion to ensure you get the best sound. In addition to basic playback functions (Play/Pause, FF/RW, Skip, Random/Repeat), the CDE-164BT provides a Search List of your stored music by Playlist, Artist, Album, Song, Genre, etc.. (AVRCP 1.4 phones only). The head unit will also display your stored music's song information; such as Artist name & Song/Album title. The CDE-164BT even supports audio streaming of music apps on your Bluetooth-enabled smartphone with limited control and song/artist information. You will continue to use your Bluetooth enabled smartphone to control advanced music navigation.

Note: When an incoming call or outgoing call is in progress from your Bluetooth enabled mobile phone, audio streaming will be paused so you can take your call. Once the call is finished, your streaming music will resume.

Bluetooth Sound Quality Adjustments: You can customize the sound of your Bluetooth hands-free experience to fit your own preferences. You can adjust the CDE-164BT's mic gain, phone output, & ring tone volume. If that's not enough, there are 5 sound quality settings to choose from to get the balance just right for you. You can also select which speakers output Bluetooth audio. This flexibility will make your phone calls a pleasurable experience.

    • Volume Adjustments: You can emphasize or weaken the volume level of phone call, the ring tone, and the microphone input to fit your own preference. The Phone Talk Level, Ring Tone, & Mic Gain are all adjustable between -5 to + 5 dB.
    • Sound Types: This unit provides 5 methods to improve the sound quality of your calls. You can choose the type according to your own preference - Type 1 (standard mode), Type 2 (enhances noise reduction), Type 3 (enhances echo-cancellation), Type 4 (enhances both noise reduction & echo cancellation), & Type 5 (weakens both noise reduction & echo-cancellation).
    • Speaker Output: You can select which car speaker outputs the audio from your Bluetooth-enabled mobile phone/device. Choose All (audio will be output from all of the speakers in the car), F-L (sound is only output from the front left speaker), F-R (sound is only output from the front right speaker), or F-LR (sound is output from the front left and front right speakers).

    Disc & USB Playback

Disc Compatibility: The unit features a single disc player that will playback CD-Audio and finalized CD-R/CD-RW audio discs. The unit also supports playback of MP3/WMA music files loaded onto CD-R/RW discs.

Front-Panel USB Port: The Alpine CDE-164BT features a front-panel USB (type-A) port. The USB port enables connection of a portable USB mass-storage class (MSC) device; such as a USB thumbdrive or flashdrive. The USB port supports audio playback and control of MP3/WMA audio files stored on these portable USB mass-storage class devices. USB portable audio players that can be charged via USB will be charged when plugged into the CD receiver's USB port (max. 1A), and the vehicle's ignition switch is set to ACC or On.

Note: The head unit's USB port is not compatible with Android smartphones.

MP3/WMA Playback: The Alpine CDE-164BT supports the following types of MP3/WMA files recorded onto CD-R/RW disc or loaded onto a USB mass storage class device.

    Media Type CD-R/RW USB MSC
File System ISO 9660 Level 1/2, Joliet, Romeo FAT 12/16/32

Text/File/Folder Search: When you are playing a disc or USB device with ID3 or WMA tags, you can easily search for a track, file, or folder by its title. Once you have activated the search mode, you can use the rotary encoder to quickly scan through the titles to locate the desired track. For discs and USB devices without ID3 or WMA tags, searches are made using the track numbers associated with each song.

Playback Modes: The Alpine CDE-164BT offers Repeat and Random playback modes.

    • Repeat: Repeat Play (repeats playback of current track/file), Folder Repeat (repeats only files in current folder).
    • Random: Random Play (all tracks/files on disc are played in random order), Folder Random (only files in current folder are played back in random order).

Off Insert/Eject + Auto Reload: A CD disc can be inserted or ejected with the power off. When a disc is inserted with the power off, the unit will automatically power up and begin playback. When a CD is ejected and left sticking out of the CD slot for 20 seconds, the unit automatically reloads the CD to protect if from damage.

Angle Mounting: For proper CD playback, Alpine recommends mounting the CDE-164BT no more that 35° above horizontal.

    iPod/Aux Integration

iPod Direct Connection: The Alpine CDE-164BT's front-panel USB port can be used to connect your Lightning or 30-pin dock connector iPod/iPhone to the head unit. The CDE-164BT supports audio playback, music navigation, information display, and charging of your compatible Apple device.

    • Lightning Connector: If you have a newer iPod/iPhone with the Lightning-connector, you can use Alpine's KCU-471i cable (500KCU471I, sold separately) or the Lightning-to-USB cable that came with your Apple device to connect your iPod/iPhone to the CDE-164BT.
    • 30-Pin Dock Connector: If you have an older iPod/iPhone with a 30-pin dock connector, you can use Alpine's KCU-445i dock connector-to-USB cable (500KCU445I, sold separately) or the dock connector-to-USB cable that comes with your Apple device to connect your iPod/iPhone to the CDE-164BT.

Note: The head unit's USB connection provides 1A of current to power and charge your connected iPod/iPhone when your vehicle's ignition switch is set to the 'ACC' or 'On' position (if your iPod/iPhone has no initial battery charge, then the unit will not recognize it).

Music Playback w/ DAC Bypass: The Alpine head unit supports audio playback of stored music and music apps on your iPod or iPhone. The USB connection allows your iPod/iPhone's stored music and music apps to be loaded instantly to the head unit and sound quality to be maximized through the head unit's 24-bit D/A converter, allowing for a Signal to Noise ratio up to 105dB.  You can operate your connected iPod/iPhone via the head unit's front-panel controls or from your Apple device's clickwheel/touchscreen.

    • Head Unit: The Alpine CDE-164BT lets you navigate the stored music on your iPod/iPhone by Playlist, Artist, Album, Song, Genre, Podcast, Composer, Audiobook, or Genius Mix. You can then search these categories alphabetically (A-Z). For especially big music libraries, the Percentage Search function uses the preset buttons for quick jumps to specific parts of the list (Preset 1: 0-16%, Preset 2: 17-32%, Preset 3: 33-49%, Preset 4: 50%-66%, Preset 5: 67-82%, Preset 6: 83-100% of the song library). The head unit also offers three Shuffle playback modes (Album/Song/All) and one Repeat mode (song). Newer iPhones with iOS 6.0+ allow you to continue to use your Apple device's touchscreen to access music apps; older iPod/iPhone devices will be locked during connection.
    • App Direct: In App Direct Mode, you can navigate the stored music on your iPod/iPhone device through its clickwheel or touchscreen; as well as music apps on an iPhone (iOS 3.0+). Basic playback functions, such as Play/Pause and Previous/Next Track are still available from the head unit. Not all apps will be compatible with this mode.
Note: Access to your iPhone's downloaded applications will depend on the availability of a cellular and/or WiFi network for purposes of allowing your iPhone to connect to the Internet.

Song/Artist Information: The Alpine CD receiver will display your iPod/iPhone's music file information in Head Unit or App Direct Mode. The CDE-164BT will display Track Number, Elapsed Time, Artist Name, Song/Album Title, and Station Identification for stored music and music apps.

iPod/iPhone Compatibility Chart: The Alpine CDE-164BT is "Made for iPod/iPhone" compatible and supports the following iPod/iPhone model features (as of 8/29/2017):

Bandwidth Q (1, 2, or 3). Levels (-7 to + 7).
    • Bass Engine SQ: Bass Engine SQ tuning is a new feature that changes bass sound characteristics by automatically adjusting different combinations of EQ, Sub Level, and Crossover settings through the choice of five bass profiles (Standard, Punch, Rich, Mid Bass, and Low Bass); only customizable through TuneIt app for Apple iOS and Android devices. You can adjust the effect level (0-6) of the selected profile from the head unit.

Audio Enhancements: The CDE-164BT offers the following audio adjustments to enhance your in-car listening experience.

    • Time Correction: This unit is able to delay the audio signal to the speakers closest to the listener with its built-in Time Correction feature. This effectively creates a perception of increased distance for those speakers. Time Correction allows the listener to be placed at an equal distance between the left and right speakers for optimum staging. You can adjust the distance (0-336.6cm) of each speaker and subwoofer to the listener.
    • Media Xpander: Alpine's exclusive Media Xpander is engineered to bring out the musical details lost in compressed media, and it is adjustable per source to get the most out of your digital audio media. The Media Expander makes vocals or instruments sound distinct regardless of the music source. You can customize the Media Xpander to suit your personal taste by adjusting the level (0-8) for Bass, Mids, and Highs. The FM radio, Disc, USB, iPod, Pandora, Bluetooth, and Aux will be able to reproduce the music more clearly even in vehicles with a lot of road noise.
    • Source Volume Level: The output level of each source (Tuner, Disc, USB, iPod, Bluetooth, Pandora, Aux) is individually adjustable from -14 to + 14 dB.

Alpine's TuneIt App: The Alpine TuneIt is an easy-to-use sound-tuning app that also offers Facebook notifications. Download this free app (from Apple's App Store or GooglePlay) onto your Apple iPhone (iOS 7.0+ ) or Android smartphone (2.2+) and create a user profile about your vehicle and sound system. Your iPhone must be connected to the CDE-164BT via the appropriate Alpine iPod connector cable (500KCU445I/500KCU471I sold separately) or the Dock-/Lightning-cable that came with your iPhone. Your Android smartphone must support A2DP/AVRCP/SPP Bluetooth profiles and be paired with the Alpine receiver. Your iPhone or Android smartphone will also need an active Data Plan account with connection to the Internet via 3G, EDGE, or WiFi.

    • Sound Tuning: The Alpine TuneIt app turns your iPhone or Android smartphone into a sound tuning interface for the CDE-164BT. Follow the simple graphical instructions on your phone to adjust sound settings for your specific vehicle or choose from pre-made settings in the database. Settings that can be adjusted include Parametric EQ, Bass Engine SQ, Crossover, and Media Xpander. As you change settings on your smartphone, you will hear the results, so you can customize the sound to exactly how you want it. You can make and save up to 100 different sound settings in your account, which is helpful if you want various settings to use for specific types of music. After tuning your system, upload your settings to the Alpine Cloud Server to share them with other Alpine fans. You can also check out other user's settings and rate them. The more active you are, the higher your profile status progresses within the app.
    • Facebook Notifications: The Alpine TuneIt app also keeps you in touch with your Facebook friends. When you receive a notification, you will get a visual alert on the smartphone and the head unit, plus a sound alert through your car speakers. The visual notification includes the Facebook icon and the sender's name, with the profile picture shown on the phone. You are then able to listen to the notification via TTS (Text-to-Speech) through the head unit and your vehicle's speaker. You can even "Like" the notification from the head unit's front-panel controls. In order to receive Facebook notifications on the head unit, the Alpine TuneIt app must be the active app on your smartphone.

Note: Access to Alpine's TuneIt app will depend on the availability of a cellular and/or WiFi network for purposes of allowing your iPhone or smartphone to connect to the Internet. You will also need to turn on the GPS function of your phone.

Beep Guide: This function will give audible feedback with varying tones depending upon the button pressed. The volume of this feature can be set from 0-7.

    Display Features

The same color setting is applied to both the display and buttons.

Auto Dimmer: This unit is equipped with an illumination lead (orange); when the unit's dimmer mode is set to Auto and the illumination lead is connected to your vehicle's headlight circuit, the display and button illumination will dim to a fixed, preset level whenever the headlights are turned on. Clock Display: The head unit displays a 12- or 24-hour clock. The clock can be set to remain on even after head unit is switched off, as long as the vehicle's key is in the accessory or start position.

Stay On Mode: You can set the delay in turning off the head unit's power after the vehicle's ignition is turned off. When you select a source mode, other than Off, the music will be paused after you turn the ignition key off. At the same time, the prompt "Press Preset 6 to Stay On" will scroll once. Press Preset 6 within 15 seconds to continue to listen to your music for the select period of time (off/5/15/30 min). If Preset 6 is not pressed, the unit will power off within 15 seconds. During this period, you can only receive a call by operating your paired smartphone.

When you are playing a USB device with ID3 or WMA tags, you can easily search for a track, file, or folder by its title. Once you have activated the search mode, you can use the rotary encoder to quickly scan through the titles to locate the desired track. For USB devices without ID3 or WMA tags, searches are made using the track numbers associated with each song. [ Larry  Nov 02, 2015 ]  Staff
A short answer would be no you should only need one crossover per channel. Where are your three way crossovers located? per speaker in the front? If you have specific crossovers for specific speakers that came with the speaker you always use those. Maybe this will help you by explaining how I have mine set up. In my setup the head unit removes 80 hertz and below aka the bass frequencies so I only play mids and highs that's how you want to set up a crossover on the receiver now if you have a second crossover for the speaker what that does is separates the sound from your Twitter to your mid-range driver/ woofer. The receiver tells your speakers which range that can operate at and you're in line crossover on your speaker side dictates which speaker gets what. I hoped that helped! I love my Alpine but now there are plenty others that have developed similar technology and are great alternatives to Alpine! [ Mark  Oct 09, 2015 ]
THe crossover built into this unit is phenomenal. Chances are that it has more adjustability than your external crossover.. I absolutely love this unit. The download able user manual only brushes the surface compared to the cd rom included with the unit.. [ Richard  Oct 09, 2015 ]
I use an IPhone but you can Bluetooth or usb any phone to this unit. I like mine:) [ paul  May 13, 2015 ]
Hi Bill, I am happy to answer your question on the Alpine 164BT. First let me say that I am a Crutchfield employee and your question was sent to me because I just installed the 164 into my Wrangler about a month ago. Overall it is an outstanding radio and as far as compatibility with the Galaxy S5 you should have no issues with connecting to it via Bluetooth. I hope this helps and if you are looking for a great radio to build a system, I highly recommend this one. Take care! Chris [ Chris  May 12, 2015 ]
I would think it is. I have ipone5s that is running on this radio. I don't see why it shouldn't work. [ Morgan F.  May 11, 2015 ]
Awesome Head Unit but unfortunately I have not been able to use the Tune it App as of yet. The problem is the App does not have the CDE-164BT on the list of supported Head Units. I hope it come soon, because this was one of the main reasons I picked this unit. [ GEORGE  May 10, 2015 ]
Bluetooth compatibility is bluetooth compatibility. If your phone is bluetooth capable (it is) then it will work with this (and any other bluetooth compatible) receiver. [ Patrick  May 10, 2015 ]
Yes, works extremely well with my galaxy note 4. [ SHERIOD  May 10, 2015 ]
Yes it is compatible with the Samsung galaxy s5 as well as s4 and many other android phones. The hands free phone features work well as well as Pandora. Sounds amazing, you will not be disappointed. [ Richard  May 10, 2015 ]
Crutch field asked me to answer this question. Not sure why. My answer is I do not know. The literature says it is, but I have no firsthand experience. I have an iPhone 6 and it work with that although the you have to plug it into the USB to get Pandora and some other functions. Very happy with the head unit in general. [ CRAIG B  May 10, 2015 ]
As long as your phone has Bluetooth technology you can use the audio streaming. If you are talking about the Alpine tune it app it is available for both apple and android based devices. [ Mark  May 10, 2015 ]
I am sure it is. But I have an iPhone, it connects via Bluetooth and by usb. I did not have to do anything special just plug in via USB and pandora played right away. [ Thomas  May 10, 2015 ]
Yes it is. Very simple pairing, and works for both music and making calls. [ JORDAN  May 10, 2015 ]
    Don't know. Haven't installed it yet & I have a Motorola Nexus 6. [ Demetris  May 10, 2015 ]
