Our take on the Alpine iDA-X305S

Setting up the iDA-X305S for Pandora is straightforward — simply connect your iPhone to the receiver's USB input and turn the stereo on. Follow the prompts to download Alpine's free PandoraLink app, and you're good to go. Album art and song info show up on the big 2.2" display. The USB connection gives you sound quality that's superior to an auxiliary input, plus your iPhone stays charged as you drive. Even better, this Alpine is fully compatible with the iPhone 5 with the help of this Apple adapter.

Alpine iDA-X305s digital media receiver

Pandora's box

Setting up the iDA-X305S for Pandora is straightforward — simply connect your iPhone to the receiver's USB input and turn the stereo on. Follow the prompts to download Alpine's free PandoraLink app, and you're good to go. Album art and song info show up on the big 2.2" display. The USB connection gives you sound quality that's superior to an auxiliary input, plus your iPhone stays charged as you drive. Even better, this Alpine is fully compatible with the iPhone 5 with the help of this Apple adapter.

The stereo's controls work like a Pandora command center — push and rotate the main knob to the right to give a song a "thumbs up," or rotate to the left for "thumbs down." The iDA-X305S also lets you pause the current song, or tag it for later purchasing in iTunes®. Tap the middle of the large jog dial to activate a QuickSearch of your Pandora stations, and you can even skip up to six songs an hour per station.

Simple iPod navigation and control

Alpine also designed the iDA-X305S to make it easy to use an iPod in your car. The big jog dial in the middle works just like an iPod's click wheel. Turn it a little to access Search mode, then scroll line-by-line. Turn and hold the knob to move to Alphabet Search mode — now you can scroll through the alphabet to blaze through your lists of artists, albums, or songs.

The current song keeps playing, so you won't interrupt the music while you're searching. The convenient "Back" button lets you backtrack through the menus, instead of starting over from the top.

Play your other digital files, too

Put your favorite MP3, WMA, and AAC files on a thumb drive, and you've got an easy way to stock up on tunes for your next road trip. Or play another USB-equipped music player through the USB slot. A premium Burr-Brown digital-to-analog converter delivers your music files with the highest fidelity possible.

Flexible system-building options

This versatile stereo works with all of Alpine's peripheral gear, including satellite radio, auxiliary input adapter, add-on USB input, or CD changer.

Three sets of preamp outputs simplify setting up a system with external amplifiers and subs, and you'll appreciate the ability to control the subwoofer's output level from the stereo. For the best possible sound quality, add Alpine's PXA-H100 IMPRINT sound processor and KTX-H100 tuning kit — the IMPRINT measures your car's acoustics and adjusts the stereo's settings automatically to create a perfect audio environment.

Want to keep your car's steering wheel audio controls?
In most vehicles, you can use this adapter to connect your vehicle's steering wheel controls to this Alpine stereo. Connect a few wires, then program the adapter for your particular car and the Alpine, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls.

Overall a very nice head unit. I've been looking at this one for awhile and you can't beat the price. Such a steal. Very straightforward programming, not difficult at all to deal with. Can't really say too much about the other functions like bluetooth, all I ever listen to is my iPod. Very happy with my purchase.

Pros: Easy to program, easy to read screen - although the red background setting can be kind of difficult to see during a bright day, I like the blue background better though so I have no issues there

Cons: I haven't looked into as much as I can, but getting to a specific artist deep in the artist list on an iPod can be annoying. There might be an easier way but I have been too busy enjoying the unit to look into it.

Probably the best ALpine unit thru 2011. Display info line is a upgrade from other units. This unit is the last Alpine unit that has cd changer controls. Crutchfield Price is lowest in the country.

Pros: IPOD/PHONE controls, Burr-Brown DAC, works perfectly with 1999 Bentley stock Alpine system.

Cons: Only two colors( red or blue) no built in Blue tooth

Designed to be used with iPhone or iPad, so no ticket for using it. Able to change music, change pandora stations all from the head unit without touching the phone, all the while the phone is charging. I got the optional Bluetooth so I can make and receive phone calls while driving. When a phone call comes in it pauses the music after you hang up the music continues right where you left off. You can set the high pass filter and limit the bass going to the door and rear deck speakers so those speakers aren't using a lot of energy trying to reproduce sound they can't handle. I love it. Pandora works especially good and I can live without fumbling with Cd's.

Pros: Easy to use, great for pandora and sound is awesome. Favorite car stereo I have ever had!

Cons: After two and a half years USB broke on the unit. However this was a hard two and half years driving most of the day to multiple locations to repair machines.

    Great for the price!

This is the 2nd Alpine iDA head unit I have owned the 1st one I had since they came out with the iPhone control. It quit charging the when iOS 4 rolled it would say this device does not support charging. So I ended up using the BT400 blue tooth kit that I installed with it for hands free and. When I saw this I decided I would grab it. It works fine with IOS 6 and iPhone 4s and my wife's 5 with the 30 pin to new iPhone adapter

Pros: Cheap and worked with existing wiring harness

Cons: complicated to use, 2 volt Preamp output

I like the head unit but the lay out for programing radio stations and some of the menus could use some work. When I am using a Ipod the speed of changing tracks sometimes can take 2 or 3 seconds and occasionally needs two or more presses of the forward button.

Pros: Looks good, solid construction, great sound.

Cons: Speed of track changing on a Ipod and the menu lay out.

This player works seamlessly with the iPOD or iPHONE. If you (like myself and many others) only use an iPOD or iPHONE for your music then you cannot beat this player. Just connect the device to the unit and off you go. Controlling everything from the unit is easy and intuitive. It also has all the sound options one would come to expect (treble, bass, subwoofer, and even options to change the bass and treble frequency). It looks great in red or blue and the controls are easy to master. Save yourself some time and money and get this Alpine unit!

Pros: Looks, price, ease of use, options

    Cons: None!

This is truely a great stereo. I never listen to CD's or tapes; I either listen to the radio or IPOD and this stereo is perfect for that. Those that complain about the sound should look at their speakers. A good amp with good speakers, makes this an awesome system.

Pros: Good quality, great price...all around, perfect for me.

    Cons: Don't know of any.

Pros: Many features and easy access to playlists thru the click wheel which is used exactly same as center button on an iPod

Cons: Can't see in direct sunlight as with most head units and some features take a while to change having to click center and back all the time

I've tried many brands of decks, and have found Alpine to create the strongest finished product. What I was mainly looking for in my purchase was a deck that would control my iPod, and display the album artwork and information as succinctly and in gorgeous detail as possible. This deck has surpassed my expectations. I would highly recommend to anyone looking to mainly utilize their digital library rather than physical CD's.

Pros: Beautiful. Impressive screen, easy controls.

Cons: No AUX in on the external face. Would like to see it put out more amps to the speakers, but that's asking a lot for a deck without a separate amp.

Was the first after market stereo I bought for my 1997 Land Cruiser, great sound for tuning. However, was not capable with my iPod Touch, needed an interface for blue tooth and was overly hyped by the internet. I exchanged it for an Alpine CDE-HD137BT CD which does all that it advertises.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

It has only been three weeks, so I am getting used to it. Replaced factory radio on 2001 Jeep Cherokee with this head unit and Alpine KTP-445U amp. Amp is not plug and play, but was still very easy to install with the adaptor wire harnesses that Crutchfield provided. I pod ease of use is fantastic. My only disappointment is the radio presets are not as user friendly as I hoped. Sound quality is excellent considering only room for 5 1/4 inch in rear and 6 1/2 inch in front, where I did upgrade the factory speakers with Kicker DS series. Don't expect too much bass from the Sound Ordinance 8 inch self-powered sub that Crutchfield is selling. If sub did fit under the front seat as I hoped, I think it would be have put the bass in the passenger area and been an acceptable amount of bass for a 50 year old who isn't looking for rumbling bass that shakes the mirrors. Behind the rear seat in an open vehicle, the bass gets lost by the time it makes it way to the drivers seat. The self powered subwoofer was easy to install, but I will be upgrading the sub very soon to richen the sound quality with a little more bass.

Pros: Alpine quality. Ease to navigate I-pod functions. Great price.

Cons: Radio pre set access takes some getting use to.

The Ida-x305s is probably the best unit out there for iPod/iPhone integration. It is one of the easiest ones to use to find a song (mainly because you can search by alphabet). It looks good, sounds good (especially with imprint and KTP-445), and is just overall a steal at this price.

Pros: Sound, ease of use, iPhone iPod integration, look

Cons: At this price level none.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have an iPhone 5 and I knew going into this that there were issues with headunits and the iPhone5. After doing my research I noticed that this particular item was listed as fully compatible with the iPhone 5 using the 30-pin to lightning adapter in conjunction with the Alpine harness. GREAT! All in all, I love the headunit. For the money it was a great deal -- had a nice little screen and everything. I install it and select the Pandora source and before I even put my car into gear I get an "Error 03" on my headunit. I soon find out that I need a PandoraLink app to stream to my headunit properly. No problem -- I download it and get it going. Everything works nice -- GREAT! But wait... 15 mins into my first drive the Pandora app on my iPhone shows an alert saying its having problems connecting to the device. 5 seconds later my headunit shows an "Error 03". I fiddle with a few things again and eventually find out that the ONLY way to fix this is to reboot my phone. For the past 3 weeks, Pandora randomly throws this error (sometimes 10 mins into a drive, and sometimes 2 hours) and the only solution is a complete phone reboot. The problem turned out to be the PandoraLink app. iPod functionality is flawless because it doesn't rely on PandoraLink, but Pandora is completely spotty and unreliable. I'm left a bit unsatisfied with this purchase and wish Alpine would simply UPDATE their PandoraLink app to better support newer iOS devices and specifically Pandora apps.

Pros: Great value, nice screen that shows album art, excellent iPod and Pandora navigation and controls

    Cons: Extremely unreliable Pandora streaming

This unit does everything it advertises extremely well. The Ipod interface works fantastic, I have mine hooked up to my old cd changer, which it controls flawlessly. Like a few people had mentioned, using the radio isn't as straight forward as other Alpine units, but i don't listen to the radio much, so it doesn't bother me. For the people who were having trouble with the unit i will say this..."Read the instructions". Concerning Ipod compatibility...Do your homework people! So in conclusion I have 5 different sources to choose from ( Radio, CD, Ipod, Pandora, Blutooth ) that's more the most people have! Ive always been an Alpine fan, when I choose another manufacture I am usually sorry i did. Have NO fear, this deck is a great buy, if you know what you are doing!

Pros: its on sale!! Alpine makes great products. Ability to add an Imprint sound processor, 3 preamp outputs

    Cons: No Blutooth included!

After 5 yrs of flawless and beautiful sound, i lost my ida-x100(previous iteration) to a thief. Im glad i was able to find this one before they were all gone, and especially at this great price!! This one sounds as great as the last. I love having the cover art within sight. Having my library at my disposal, all the time, has spoiled me. The thought of carrying around a bunch of cds seems ridiculous now. Utilizing playlists for road trips is perfect. I cant recommend this highly enough. Aside from the fact that theyve chromed it out, i love it. (I cant speak to the Pandora feature as i dont use it. I hope they make them compatible with SoundCloud!)

Pros: Intuitive interface Alpine sound Crisp, colorful display Plenty of sound adjustability Still decent, aesthetically

    Cons: Its gotten chromed out

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This stereo left me wishing for more....or that I had just gone with a different radio. The lack of Bluetooth was disappointing. Blue tooth compatible is pretty deceiving, its also more $$ for a blue tooth receiver. I guess that's on me for not reading close enough. Also, i thought there would be a USB and possibly a AUX port on the front - NOPE. You have to run the USB cable out the back of the stereo leaving a big ugly wire displayed all the time. On the pictures I saw on here the face-detach button looked like a USB port and the remote sensor looked like AUX. If I hadn't soldered the wires together and had this to do over I would probably go with the Sony MEX-BT3100P or something similar. I am really disappointed in what i got for the price I had to pay - this is one of those times where I dont feel like I got what i payed for.

Pros: Installation Gear from Crutchfield Sound is OK Comes with and electron user manual that is very detailed

Cons: Price - Way over priced for what it actually includes compared with other models Lack of built in blue tooth Lack of AUX port Lack of front USB port The scroll wheel is really slow going through the iPod menu When the phone is plugged up it locks it down so you haave to use the radio interface the USB ipod connector that is included has this giant head and any sort of skin or case on the phone will not work with it the display is....meh, clock is tiny.

    Poor Sound Quality

Scott L from Atlanta, Ga on 12/20/2012

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

First off, Google reviews of this unit. Everything they say is exactly what I experienced. I tried every setting on the unit and on my amp. The sound quality was far inferior to the entry level Kenwood I was replacing. Crutchfield had such a good sale, that I was disappointed to return the unit. But the sound quality made me cringe even to think about cranking it up. No bass, and I mean NONE. Even with a quality amp. I would describe the mids as scratchy, and the highs as annoying. I would have thought it was defective, except for the reviews I read after the fact that confirmed my issues. This was my first Alpine, and many have assured me that this isn't normal. But every Kenwood and Pioneer I've ever owned (several) have sounded far better. -No aux -No bluetooth -No HD -2v pre-outs I gave the unit a week and tweaked the settings constantly. I checked all the wiring 3 times. I gladly returned the half-price unit and replaced it with one of the new Pioneers. An hour after receiving the new Pioneer, all was better, and the sound was a night and day difference. Same amp, same wiring. It felt like Alpine spent all their money on the cool screen and went cheap on everything else. Maybe one day I'll try another Alpine, but it'll be a while. Don't believe me, then read the other reviews I mentioned.

This unit replaced my factory Bose 6 disc changer in my 2002 Nissan Maxima, and I have to say the difference in the sound quality in very noticeable. Installation went smooth, I didn't even have to call tech I kept the original Bose speakers and the sound is great. My Ipod is pretty much all I listen to while in the car, and this unit was absolutely perfect for me.

Pros: Easy to install, great sound, easy set-up.

Cons: The large select dial feels a little cheap, and is easy to push in while turning.

    Comparison with iDA-X200

Chris S from SLC, Utah on 12/4/2012

    2006 Mazda 6
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I recently purchased the iDA-X305s as a replacement for my iDA-X200. After about a week, I'm considering whether or not the upgrade was worth it over one inconvenience that I'm not seeing noted anyplace I've searched. My 4th gen Ipod Touch is the source of my music. I'm not always going to remember every album name on there, though I still love listening to the albums the way they were intended-- by track number. The X200 allowed me to search by album or artist, preserving the track number order even if I only have one album by the artist. However, the X305S does not allow this. The unit jumps from "Artist" to "Song" search mode if you only have one album by that artist, and the Song Search mode is alphabetical. Basically, if I want to listen to my songs in track-list order, I need to a) look up the album on the ipod directly, b) find a song on the album to get the album name and then search again for the album name, c) rename every mp3 on my ipod to start with the track number. I'm surprised there isn't much more about this on the web- seeing as the unit has been out for a while now. This could easily be a configurable option if they were to include it, and it could be updated via firmware if that were a possibility. However, I get the impression that Alpine doesn't care too much about customer service (They could learn a thing or two from Crutchfield!

Pros: Well built unit, lots of ways to customize the look, easy to get running many accessories are available speed with ipod touch gen 4 isn't too shabby

Cons: Trade-off in functionality makes me question if I made the right decision to upgrade. Lack of support or firmware updates

Great improvement from the factory CD. Considering all my music is accessible from my iPhone 4S, I don't need nor want a CD player. The display is great. It shows the date and time, as well as album cover art. Pandora works well with alpine app, and if you are an iheartradio fan, it also works! Be sure to used supplied iPhone connection to USB. The iPhone USB chord won't work. Overall very happy with product and crutchfield!

Pros: Easy install, with crutchfield freebies! Cool and clean look. Puts out great sound, as well as amp outs!

Cons: "Bluetooth Ready" means you will be required to connect a Bluetooth antenna to the back of the radio. Don't confuse this with built in Bluetooth.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Extremely easy installation, sound quality could be a little higher in quality. If you are a Ipod/Pandora fanatic like myself this is the best receiver on the market. In terms of ease of use when navigating playlists/artists/albums/etc this one by far is the easiest one to sue, couple clicks of a button and you have your entire IPod at your disposal. I'm not much of a Bluetooth user so I havent had the pleasure of using that. But if your're looking for an IPod/Pandora unit this is the one for you!

Bought this deck on CF as a replacement and couldnt say no to the price. I was skeptical being that i have never owned any alpine products but have seen them (decks in stores) or heard them (subs and speakers) and they always seem to be on point. This deck exceeded my expectations, and im content with the purchase. The overall feel of the deck feels like the buttons are where they need to be. I was expecting the Knob to have a "loose" feel but is not the case and feels very sturdy, and durable. Ipod use is a big help and being able to navigate the ipod from the deck is a Big Plus..I read some reviews about the need to unplug and reconnect the ipod due to freezing or disconnect as of now i have not had that problem (deck has been installed for 2 months now). The sound quality that it produces is nice and clear running a mono and 4 channel amp. Being able to change the color scheme of the deck is a cool feature, and being able to view album cover art, and download new wallpapers as well...Would quickly recommend this product.

Pros: 1.Sturdiness, and durability 2. Sound EQ and Crossover Features 3. Color Changing Option 4. GREAT deck for an Ipod / Iphones 5. User Friendly Interface 6. Lots of compliments

Cons: The Only Con about this deck that i wont knock a star for because i read about it, and was forewarned is that the Sunlight will Block out the display.

Nice head unit... works exactly as described. the only thing that didnt was the Alpine App but if you use the regular Pandora App it works great.

Pros: Easy to use, I like the way I can change the color from blue to red to match my dash lights.

    Cons: None

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I decided to replace the factory Alpine stereo in my '05 BMW 330ci. I have gone through four head units trying to find one with the best balance of features and sound quality. This one could have been perfect, but I think that I got a defective model. The sound quality on the Satellite Radio, the FM radio AND the iPod (which is where this is supposed to excel) sounded worse than an old AM radio. The features and the display were great, especially the ability to go red on the display to match my BMW interior lighting and the fact that it showed ALL of the info on one screen. I didn't need the sound to be perfect, but it had to at LEAST sound as good as the factory radio, which was not even close. Then, it kept clearing out the Sat Radio memory which is the main reason I believe that I got a defective model. Considering the price of this unit, you would think that it would sound as good, if not better than the Alpine units that cost half as much WITHOUT having to use the Imprint module. I really wanted this to work well for me, but it was not to be. I had read that there seemed to be a problem with defective units. I hope that this is just a fluke and that they come out with a new version of this unit that solves all of the issues.

    Pros: Display, features

    Cons: Sound quality

Chris C from Boston on 8/6/2011

I have installed two of these units in a harley FLTR. In the first case I had to remove and replace the HU when moisture got behind the screen cover. The unit performed flawlessly when driven through a PDX6 amp. Tough application for a stereo designed to be used inside a vehicle but the alpine has performed well in every instance. The red/blue illumination feature was a huge plus.

I bought this for Christmas, got it hooked up with the help on the amazing Crutchfield crew. When I got it all hooked up, in my 04 Dodge Durango, WOW it just looked amazing and produced a much better sound than the factory. The screen is just great, being able to have all my music right at my finger tips. Its very easy to navigate through my music. I now have it hooked up to 2 10' alpine subs and a 1000 watt amp and its GREAT. I would recommend this product to anyone!

    Great iPhone controls

TrailRatedRN from Springboro, OH on 3/30/2011

I installed this HU in January. I loved it the minute I started using it and, after 3 months of use, I have decided that I made the right purchase. This is a great unit for those looking to navigate iPod/iPhone. I use iPhone 3Gs. I have the bluetooth option and use it regularly. It was easy to pair with my phone, and I have no trouble synching it. Navigation is smooth. I can see all of my calls and browse phone numbers. However, it is difficult to return to music selection after navigating bluetooth calling. I can quickly find a song by scrolling song by song or a page at a time. I can search by song, artist, etc. just like the iPod. It recognizes my playlists and can shuffle songs. I enjoy pandora and have created a few stations for listening. I have also added several songs to my iTunes playlist after marking them using the Pandora bookmark option with this HU. I like the display screen. Alpine has a webpage with dozens of downloadable images for the display. I chage my display image every couple weeks. I am less than happy with alpine because of the difficulty in contacting their tech support. I had trouble using the image change option (finally found out that the HU was not compatible with my memory stick - apparently it is not compatible with certain brands). Neither Crutchfield nor I had success contacting a live person at alpine tech support.

I brought this unit. It's work great about 3 months. I use this thru a USB thumb drive. After three months, I had problem with the device. Before It played a song and I turned off my car, It automatic continue playing the song that I left off. But now it started over at the beginning. I don't know if it a thumb drive or what, but it's cause me a lot of headache. Sound is good. Bluetooth could need a lot more improve (waiting for time to connect.)

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I'm happy enough with the sound, but what really drives me nuts is the functionality of this unit--it IS NOT READY to be on the market. It's supposed to be hands free, but I'm glad I didn't let them put this in my glove comp. where they wanted to because I handle my iphone EVERY time I want to use it. When you get in the car you can wait for the bluetooth to activate and then plug it in (occurs anywhere from 5 second to NEVER) or you can plug it in and then the iphone sound will shut off and you have to play with it to switch the sound source to dock connector. Yet somehow, even though the iphone switched itself to bluetooth input, it still didn't pair with the unit and I have to go into the iphone menu, forget the bluetooth device and re-pair it almost every time I get in the car. Even if I turn off the car to get gas I have to go through this hassle. And the Pandora app is terrible because you can't switch from ipod to Pandora and back hands free. You must launch Pandora manually to listen and then shut down and switch back to ipod manually to listen to ipod. So your either constantly pulling over to mess with it, or you're an accident waiting to happen. And often times it STILL doesn't work and you have to reset everything. I just want to get in my car and have everything work like I have with every stereo I've ever owned. This is a waste of time and money.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I put this unit in my 2001 Trans Am as part of a nose to tail Alpine system. I was extremely pleased with the sound quality of the system. Alpine component set in the doors, Alpine Coaxials in the back seat, 1042 Alpine DVC type R sub and a Alpine 5 channel amp. features on the radio are great, works well with my Iphone and even better yet with the 8Gig jump drive full of music. Only issue is the Type R sub needed a bit more juice than the mono out on the 5 channel could give it, so I have a 600W Alpine Amp coming to add to the system. Would build the same system again tomorrow, love it.... Crutchfield makes the experience a well informed and easy one.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Super simple install, terrific clear sound (and I haven't even gotten my aftermarket speakers yet - still using the stock on a 2008 Impreza), and overall an easy-to-use interface. For 95% of people out there, this is a 5-star product. 3 things that my particular situation didn't mesh well with: 1) The angle of my console makes the screen a little hard to see at some daylight hours. This will obviously differ from car to car. 2) Pandora works as is with iPhone, but I have a Droid, and that takes a couple of add-ons to use. Once again, iPhone bias rears its ugly head. 3) If you have around 10 gigs of music, then there's no issue. But when you have 110, it seems to take forever to scroll through them. So, like I said, for most people this is a slam dunk purchase. If you have the same situation I do, you can look around to other decks - but you'll still be happy with this one, like I am.

I wanted a modern deck that would control my iPhone 4 and allow me to use the good 3G signal I receive to get Pandora Radio. I added the Power Pack to augment my PDX-5 Amp to get cleaner sound. I also added the Sirius Satelite kit. Overall I'm very pleased with how it all sounds and looks. The deck is a little complicated to use at first, but once you figure out where everything is contolled, it's very easy. The display on this unit is really clear and easy to read. I especiall like the album art that comes up with Pandora and iPhone/Pod use. If you're looking for a really nice deck, make sure you check out the iDA-X305S!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This head unit is a fantastic idea that mostly hits the mark. The sound is great right out of the box (WAAAAY better than the Blaupunkt Acapulco that was in my car), with multiple options for enhancement (some of them including expensive add-ons). The sound from my iPod is fantastic, considering they're compressed files to begin with. The simple, intuitive controls match the controls of an iPod quite well and create a very uncluttered look. Being able to control Pandora from the head unit is amazing. I don't use it a ton, but it's VERY nice to have when I do and works very well. All of the problems I've encountered COULD be related to the age of my iPhone (3G), because they generally involve slow performance when using the iPod. I only point them out because it's still possible that they may be issues with the head unit itself: -The rapid search function for the iPod is painfully slow and sometimes doesn't work at all. -I get occasional "skips" in the sound, but not often enough to be too annoying. -A couple of times I've gotten a really fuzzy sound when playing the iPod, but unplugging it and plugging it back in seemed to help. Overall, I'm incredibly impressed with the perfomance and the thought behind the device. That being said, there are a few annoyances I've encountered that I'm willing to overlook based on all of the good points (and the fact that they may be related to my iPhone more than the head unit).

    Great Interface, So So Display

    Rich from Chicago on 8/30/2010

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this HU to replace the factory one in my 06 Miata. After looking around for a radio that wasn't crazy looking (i.e. lots of lights and nuts buttons) I landed on this one. The finish on the HU itself is Matte so it blends in very nicely. The Large Chrome Knob, while conspicuous is not that out of place. The operation of the radio is awesome as well. Using it as a iPod deck works great. The tuner is pretty good, no buttons for pre-sets but i got over that quickly. The rub comes with the display. The off axis viewing is awful. I mean really really bad. Maybe i'm a little closer to the radio that alpine intended, but even so i could not read the display unless it was dark out... i mean totally dark. Called Alpine, they told me that there was nothing to do about it. Also even when sitting directly infront of the display, sunlight washes this thing out pretty bad. Unless you have a larger vehicle where you can get a ways from the unit, or really really tinted windows i would be wary of this product. I returned it to Crutchfield after about a week and bought the CDA-117.

    I *really* don't like it

AlanX from San Francisco, CA on 8/28/2010

I have one, but I'm not happy with it. Here are the problems: * It's impossible to read the display in direct sunlight. I have a convertible, so that's a *big* problem, but I can't see the display even when the top's up if the sun hits the dash. * There are no preset buttons for radio stations, and picking a preset is an annoying exercise in frustration: several button clicks, stations are listed by frequency, not by call sign, even though the HD-radio adapter gets the call sign (it's not visible without scrolling). There isn't even a "next" button to move to the next preset. (The "next" button just moves you up a couple notches in frequency --- it doesn't even get you to the next station on the dial.) It's as if the user interface was designed by someone who never listened to the radio. The process of picking a preset station is so involved and distracting that I"m not willing to do it unless I'm at a traffic light or otherwise stopped. * Phone integration is marginal. It gets the address book from your iPhone, but doesn't get the recent-calls list. Once you put it into phone mode, it's hard to get it back out again. * Integration with the steering wheel controls fails randomly. Have to shut off the car and restart the car for the problem to be fixed.

over all wonderfull product. i bought the bluetoot kit, use an ipod, and stream music from my phone with ease. the only drawback is the display is not protected from light from the top, and you CANNOT see the screen in the bright daylight. could just be that my dodge ram dash is positioned just rite for this to be a problem, but a problem none the less

Very easy to navigate.lots of cool futureristic features. ipod or iphone is neccesarry to apppreciate this radio. Satilite radio is a big addition with great sound. the voltage preamp output could be higer than 2 volts. the accessaries are a bit expensive but sound quality is very good. so is stereo separation. The screen is very easy to read. it has big print. Have a lot of fun with this piece. you must have amp to get that full sound.

The iDA-x305s displays the art work & song description beautifully. Browsing songs is as easy as the iPod. It looks Sharp, it sounds Great, it'll make you want to find reasons to get in your car and just drive. Overall, it's and great buy.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

First off, it works fantastically with my iPhone 3GS. Plug in the iPhone and it recognizes the library in about 3 seconds (I believe the older IDA-X305, no S, would sometimes give people problems with recognizing their iPhone/iPod. I've had no such problems). Searching for what you want to listen to is a breeze and functions similarly to an iPod Classic. I can't comment too much on Pandora. I don't use it often, but it's nice that it's there. The screen is perfect for navigating selections. A full function LCD is so much nicer than the one or two lines of text on most other head units. If you're OCD like me and have album artwork for every song on your iPhone, you'll appreciate the beautiful LCD screen even more. Sound quality is very good in my opinion. I had an Alpine CDA-9856 head unit before this one and this one sounds noticeably better. So after all of my glorification of this head unit you may be asking, why only four stars? Lack of value. Cheaper receivers give you many features that Alpine makes you pay extra for. Buying the imprint processor (stock EQ's are fairly basic) and bluetooth kit will cost almost as much as the head unit. Then there's HD radio and satellite tuners to potentially buy as well. If you're buying Alpine though, you're probably already expecting not to get much bang for your buck. All in all, if you have an iPhone/iPod, this head unit is for you. You will be hard pressed to find a head unit that gives you better control of it than this.

Overview: The Alpine iDA-X305S is an in-dash digital media receiver with an AM/FM tuner, a rear-panel USB input, and a 2.2" full color TFT LCD screen, but no CD slot. You can connect and control an iPod or a USB memory device; and the unit is Bluetooth ready. The iDA-X305S is a dedicated receiver that provide seamless control of your iPod, iPhone, and many other popular digital devices right from the head unit. The iDA-X305S receiver offers enhanced features for a more robust iPod-listening experience that meets the specifications for "Made for iPod" and "Works with iPhone" compatibility.

USB Memory Mode: The Alpine iDA-X305S features a rear-panel USB port and comes supplied with a 58" USB extension cable to connect a USB MSC (Mass Storage Class) or MTP (Media Transfer Protocol) MTP compliant device; such as your Android smartphone, portable digital audio player, or USB thumbdrive. The iDA-X305S can play MP3, WMA, and AAC files stored on a compatible USB memory device formatted in FAT 12/16/32. MP3 files can be recorded with bit rates of 16-320 kbps, WMA files can have 16-320 kbps bit rates, and AAC files can have 16-320 kbps. This unit can recognize up to 1,000 folders and up to 10,000 files. The unit's display shows song, album, and artist title, and elapsed time. If no tag information exists, the display shows the track number and elapsed time. During MP3/WMA/AAC playback from a USB memory device, you can activate the search mode to locate a specific folder or file by name. You can repeat the current track or current folder, and play the tracks in the current folder or all of the tracks in the current memory bank in random order.

iPod/iPhone Connectivity: The iDA-X305S uses a rear-panel USB connection (58" USB extension cable included) and comes supplied with a 7.5" iPod dock connector cable to connect select iPods and provide ultra-fast digital data transfer so songs are loaded instantly through the receiver. If you have an iPod nano (7th gen), iPod touch (5th gen), or iPhone 5, you will also need the Apple Lightning to 30-pin adapter (472LTN230P, sold separately). The iDA-X305S allows connection, audio playback, control, and charging of your iPod using a USB connection. With the USB connection you get the fastest speed available and a direct digital connection to the unit's 24-bit DAC. Sound quality is maximized by using USB along with the 24-Bit D/A converter, allowing for an incredible Signal to Noise ratio of 105dB.

    • Display Modes: You can view Artist, Album, Song Information and Song Number right on the head unit's display. You can choose between three display modes (Track Number/Elapsed Time, Song Name/Artist Name, or Song Name/Album Name).
    • Search Functions: You can quickly and easily search through all of the music contained on your iPod through Playlist, Artist, Album, Song, Genre, Podcasts, Audiobooks, or Composer searches. For especially large music libraries, Alpine created Page Skip to skip your music content list page by page. The unit also offers a Percentage Search function to quickly jump to specific parts of your iPod's music list. You can skip through your music in 10% increments. You can even use Alphabet Search to jump through your lengthy list of music by skipping through the letters of the alphabet. Once you have the letter you want, simply scroll to the exact song. Instead of starting all over from the search menu, you can simply press the Back button on the receiver to go back one step (works just like your iPod).
    • Playback Functions: During iPod playback, you can activate any of the following playback modes: Shuffle Album (an album in the iPod is selected at random, and is played back in the album song order), Shuffle Song (all songs in the currently selected mode are played back in random order), or Repeat Play (a single song is repeatedly played back). When you are playing a song if you press the back button it will take you back to the place in the menu where you selected the song.

Note: You must use the included USB extension cable and iPod dock connector to connect your iPod or iPhone. This unit does not support direct connection of the standard iPod/USB dock or Lightning connector cable that comes with your Apple device.

Pandora Link: The iDA-X305S' PandoraLink feature enables you to interact with your Pandora internet radio account, by connecting an iPhone that has the Pandora compatible Application for iPhone installed. PandoraLink allows you to play Pandora internet radio from your connected iPhone through the Alpine iDA-X305S. Pandora is a free, personalized online radio service that allows users to create their own stations with music they like from a single artist or song. To get started you will need a Pandora online account, the Pandora Radio App from the Apple iTunes App Store downloaded on your iPhone, and the PandoraLink for Alpine App from iTunes App store downloaded on your iPhone (all free). Once you have downloaded these applications and connected your iPhone to the iDA-X305S via its USB connection, you will be able to access Pandora music content, playback audio, and display music information with album art from the Alpine digital media receiver. The Alpine iDA-X305S also offers unique Pandora functions such as Song Rating,  Bookmarking, and QuickMix.

    • Song Rating: If you like a song, push in the outer ring of the unit's Double Action encoder knob and twist the knob to the right to give the song a "thumbs-up". If you don't like the song, likewise push in and rotate the knob to the left, to give the song a "thumbs-down" and the song will skip. This provides feedback to Pandora so that you get better music selections catered to you no matter where you are; whether it's in the car, on your iPhone, or over the web on your computer at home.
    • Song Bookmarking: The current song or artist playing can be bookmarked to your Pandora account. Your bookmarks can be viewed on your profile page at or directly via the Pandora app for iPhone, where you can choose to purchase the music from your computer later.
    • QuickMix: Use QuickMix to create a playlist based on two or more of your Pandora stations. Edit your QuickMix station selections on the Pandora compatible application for iPhone when it is not connected to the iDA-X305S.
Note: Pandora is not available in Canada and only available for use in the United States.

CEA-2006 Compliant: The specifications given by Alpine for the built-in amplifier comply with the CEA-2006 mobile amplifier power testing and measurement standards from the Consumer Electronics Association. All manufacturers who comply with the standard can display the CEA-2006 logo on their product.

    • CEA-2006 Power Rating: 18 watts x 4-channel (at 4 ohms, 20-20kHz, 1% THD)
    • Max Power Output: 50 watts x 4-channel (200 watts total)

Head Unit Power Pack (optional): Add the KTP-445A (500KTP445A, sold separately) Head Unit Power Pack to deliver 45 watts x 4-channel RMS of power. The KTP-445A is compact enough to install behind the Alpine receiver. It plugs in-line with the head unit's wiring harness, so you don't even need additional wires.

Bass and Treble Controls: The head unit features independent Bass and Treble controls that allow you to adjust each setting +/-14 dB in 2 dB steps. The center frequencies are adjustable (60, 80, 100, and 200 Hz for bass and 10, 12.5, 15, and 17.5 kHz for treble) and the bass bandwidth is adjustable (from narrow to wide in four steps).

Loudness: Loudness introduces a special low and high frequency emphasis at low listening levels to compensate for the ear's decreased sensitivity to bass and treble sound at low volume.

HPF: The high pass filter (HPF) removes the lower bass from the front and rear speaker and line level outputs. HPF options are 80 Hz, 120 Hz, 160 Hz, and off.

Subwoofer Pre-out: In addition to the front and rear 2-volt preamp outputs, there is a dedicated 2-volt subwoofer preamp output with variable level adjustment of 0 to 15. You can select either System1 or System2 for the desired subwoofer effect.

    • Subwoofer System 1: Subwoofer level changes according to the main volume setting.
    • Subwoofer System 2: Subwoofer level change is different from the main volume setting; even at low volume settings, the subwoofer is still audible.

Power IC Off: When an external amplifier is powering all the speakers in the system, you can turn the internal amp off, which will improve the sound quality.

Interrupt Feature: When a device having the interrupt feature (such as a cellular telephone) is connected to the receiver, the audio signal will be automatically muted whenever the interrupt signal is received from the device. The supplied wiring harness contains a pink/black Interrupt lead that needs to be connected to the device's interrupt signal connection.

    Sound Processing (with optional PXA-H100)

Imprint: With the addition of the optional PXA-H100 Imprint box (500PXAH100, sold separately) and KTX-H100 tuning kit (500KTXH100, sold separately) a car's inherent acoustic shortcomings can be overcome with the MultEQ feature. Imprint also gives you much more sound adjustment flexibility as detailed below.

MultEQ: MultEQ, developed by Audyssey Labs, automatically optimizes the audio for the listening environment inside your vehicle. The Imprint kit includes the hardware, software, and microphone necessary to measure multiple positions in the car and capture frequency and time domain information from the vehicle's actual acoustical environment. Once the car's speaker location delays are measured, along with the frequency peaks and dips caused by the absorptive and reflective materials in the interior, MultEQ creates a set of equalization filters to correct the frequency response and time domain problems for each speaker in the vehicle. It also removes sound distortion caused by the specific acoustical problems in the vehicle. This optimizes the sound reproduction to the specific vehicle listening environment with much greater precision than can be achieved using typical graphic or parametric equalization. The result is a more accurate soundstage and smoother, more natural sound optimized to match your vehicle.

Equalizer: 10 typical equalizer settings are preset for a variety of musical source material. Select from Flat, Pops, Rock, News, Jazz & Blues, Electrical Dance, Hip Hop & Rap, Easy Listening, Country, and Classical. You can also save six custom EQ curves you create by adjusting the parametric or graphic EQ:

    • 5- Band Parametric EQ: The Parametric EQ allows you to adjust the following 5 frequency bands in 1/3 octave steps from -6 to +6 dB at a bandwidth Q factor of 1, 1.5, or 3
      • Band 1: 20 Hz to 80 Hz
      • Band 2: 50 Hz to 200 Hz
      • Band 3: 125 Hz to 3.2 kHz
      • Band 4: 315 Hz to 8 kHz
      • Band 5: 800 Hz to 20 kHz
    • 7-Band Graphic EQ: The built-in Graphic EQ allows you to adjust the following 7 frequencies from -6 to +6 dB
      • Band 1: 63 Hz
      • Band 2: 150 Hz
      • Band 3: 400 Hz
      • Band 4: 1 kHz
      • Band 5: 2.5 kHz
      • Band 6: 6.3 kHz
      • Band 7: 17.5 kHz

Crossover: The active crossover can be used as a 2.2 channel (3-way; low-pass subwoofer, band-pass midrange, high-pass tweeter) or a 4.2 channel (2-way; high-pass front and rear, low-pass subwoofer). A crossover limits the frequencies delivered to a given speaker, so you send only the frequencies for which the speaker is well suited. The crossover adjusts the high pass filter or low pass filter of each band along with the slope and output level. You can adjust the following crossover settings:

    • 4.2 Channel:
      • High Pass Filter: the front and rear outputs are individually adjustable; crossover from 20 to 200 Hz in 1/3 octave steps with a slope of Flat, 6, 12, 18 or 24 dB/oct, additionally you can adjust the output level from -12 to 0 dB
      • Low Pass Filter: the subwoofer output can be stereo or mono; crossover from 20 to 200 Hz in 1/3 octave steps with a slope of Flat, 6, 12, 18 or 24 dB/oct, additionally you can adjust the output level from -12 to 0 dB
    • 2.2 Channel:
      • Tweeter/High Pass Filter: crossover from 1 kHz to 20 kHz in 1/3 octave steps with a slope of 6, 12, 18, or 24 dB/oct, additionally you can adjust the output level from -12 to 0 dB
      • Midrange/Band Pass Filter: a band pass has both high pass and low pass filters; HPF 20 to 200 Hz in 1/3 octave steps with a slope of Flat, 6, 12, 18 or 24 dB/oct; LPF from 20 Hz to 20 kHz in 1/3 octave steps with a slope of Flat, 6, 12, 18 or 24 dB/oct, additionally you can adjust the output level from -12 to 0 dB
      • Subwoofer/Low Pass Filter: the subwoofer output can be stereo or mono; crossover from 20 to 200 Hz in 1/3 octave steps with a slope of Flat, 6, 12, 18 or 24 dB/oct, additionally you can adjust the output level from -12 to 0 dB

Time Correction: The time correction feature delays the audio signal to the speakers closer to the listener. This effectively creates a perception of increased distance for those speakers. Time Correction allows the listener to be placed at an equal distance from all speakers for optimum staging. You can adjust the distance of each speaker and subwoofer (6-channel) to the listener from 0 to 132.7 inches.

Media Xpander: The MX (Media Xpander) function makes vocals or instruments sound distinct by restoring sound quality typically lost during recording or transmission; this function helps restore audio information that becomes obscured when audio is compressed. The MX function can be applied to all sources, except AM radio. There are three settings and each source can have its own setting.
