You get what you pay for

Civicjunkie from Taunton, ma on 10/2/2010

I was about to upgrade my stock speakers with these alpines, but when I pulled the grill off, I found out that my car already had these speakers installed. Good for me, but not so good for alpine. I should be able to tell the difference between stock civic speakers and alpines. Nonetheless, not a bad sound. Woofers are weak. I'd look towards something else if you want good bass.

GReat value speakers

Jack from Brooklyn NY on 4/11/2006

I purchased a pair of these speakers to replace my factory speakers. They are a great value. however, if you are looking for bass, look elsewhere. At high volume, the speakers gets distorted. At the time i didnt have an amp. it was power by alpine 9833 head unit. after i put in an amp, it sounded horrible. I replaced this with polk audio db67500. Very satisfy with polk.

In conclusion.
these speakers are good if you are powering from a headunit.and if you are trying to upgrade your speakers without spending too much.

great speakers

Dan from Westminster, MA on 3/28/2006

These are really good speakers if you are not looking for thumping bass. The clarity of the mids and highs is phenomenal and they bring out all of the details in my music with zero destortion. The bass isn't the best I've heard from a 6 1/2" speaker, but it's certainly not terrible. If you really want bass of course, add a sub or two. The speakers fit perfectly in my 1995 Taurus and I have had no problems so far. Definitely worth the money.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I installed these in my 1998 Chevy Z71 front doors. The speakers are a nice upgrade from the factories. These speakers are great for the heavy metal/hard rock type of music I listen to. These speakers are comparable to any other high end brands I've owned over the years (Pioneer, Kicker, Infinity). There might be slightly more distortion than the Infinity counter-parts have at higher volumes, but these cost a little bit less. Also Crutchfield's customer service is second to none. The provided instructions & wire harnesses made the job very user friendly.

Dan

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I had to replace the Infinity Gold rear speakers so I searched on the WWW and found Crutchfield with their amazing site of what fits, reviews, etc. The rep I spoke too made me aware that I needed the wire harness and the panel tool. Using the master sheet, I was able to replace all 4 speakers and used the Alpine adapter to fit the speakers just right. The sound is better in the highs and mids, I can hear the energy in live music. I need to let these "Break In" as per tech support. Keep an eye out for these , a great deal from Crutchfield.

Dene Daugherty from Pittsburgh, PA on 3/7/2006

I used these speakers to replace stock speakers... A pair front and another pair rear.

However, over the years, I have had many cars and several speaker systems - including components... And everything from Kenwood to polk to MB quart to Boston Acoustics... And I would rate these speakers as good as the majority of mid-level component systems out there now. The sound quality is amazing - especially considering the price!

Keep in mind, these are 6 1/2" drivers - not 8" or 10" woofers! So be aware that they, or any other 6 1/2" driver, are NOT made for the ultra-lows produced by some of the hard core hip-hop songs... If this is your genre of music, then I do suggest you cross out anything below 90-100hz...

Otherwise, the lows that are produced are excellent! And the mids and highs are astonishing for a system in this price range.

AT $79.99-$99.99 per pair, I would rank these speakers with the best!
Great speakers, just fantastic!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I just bought a 2006 Toyota Matrix with the plain-jane 4 speaker factory system. Really muddy sound and fair bass for what it is.

So I installed Alpine SPS-170A 6-1/2" in the the rear doors and, because of fit limitations, Kenwood KFC-1669S 6-1/2" in the front doors.

The factory Toyota Matrix speakers were designed with an excellent seal to the sheet metal of the door and to the plastic door panel. Basically, the factory speakers mount about 1" above the sheet metal using an all-in-one speaker and mount. I only mention this because the Alpines and Kenwoods can't make use of this excellent seal set up and this limits their bass a bit. The Alpines and Kenwoods make no more bass than the factory paper speakers.

That said, both of these speaker pairs are much better than the factory speakers for clarity, mids, and highs. All only powered with the original Toyota Matrix head unit.

If you can figure out a way to high mount the Alpines in the front doors to clear the lowered window glass, do it. The Alpines with their swivel aim tweeters are outstanding. Head and shoulders above the Kenwoods. My passengers in the back seat are some lucky people.

Next for my Toyota Matrix, a powered sub for more bass.

Awesome Value

partsguy83 from Winchendon,Ma on 2/24/2006

I just put these speakers in my 1998 K1500 p/u along with a pioneer deh3700 head unit. I have to say, I tought Crutchfield's service was second to none as they gave me everything i needed to put these bad boys in at no extra charge. The shipping was ultra fast and the instructions they give you rock! After putting the 6 1/2's in the doors i noticed a huge difference in sound quality, although bass response took a while as they need to break in a bit before they sound their best. I was at first skeptical about ordering stuff through here, but after I got the speakers delivered to my door fast, I was sold. These speakers sound great!! I can't wait to hear them w/ bass blockers on the door speakers and a subwoofer under the rear seat. I will most def. buy from Crutchfield again!!!

Good buy at a great price

Mike G. from Houston Texas on 2/16/2006

I got a pair of these Alpine two-way 6 1/2 speakers this christmas from my mom. I was going to take them back for the component set but decided at the last minute just to put these in. It didn't take long and I fired them up. I have heard some good speakers before, but these were suprisingly good for their position in the lower kick panels and for their price. At this price you cant go wrong with an Alpine product in my honest opinion. They sound great and they have wonderful midrange and decent highs. Compared to my friends speakers they sound horrible, but considering the fact that his retailed for over 800 and these cost around less than 100, I think I'm the one laughing now. They work fine on just my Alpine 9851, but I would advise running anoter small amp to them.

Perfect Fit

Keith from Sarasota, FL on 1/23/2006

I put these in a 99 Nissan Frontier King Cab and they fit perfect without any adapter. They sounded good with factory radio. I am waiting for the new one that is on order. Mids and highs are great. Bass is as expected for a 6 1/2" woofer.

1999 Dodge Dakota
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I really like these speakers. I bought them to replace the stock speakers in a Dodge Dakota club cab. Initially, I replaced the speakers in the doors. These speakers fit perfectly with the hardware included in the box. I was very pleased with the sound, so I bought another pair to replace the rear pair. They fit perfectly there as well.

Alpine Type-S

Vinnie from Lewisburg, OH on 1/3/2006

These speakers are awsome! I bought these as replacements to my stock speakers, and they handle the power so much better. I had to turn up the base (since I'm not running an amp), and they haven't made the first distortion. I am about to change out my head unit, and that will make these perfect.

Pros:

Cons:

Excellent coaxial choice

Justin from Mobile, AL on 9/18/2005

I bought these to go in the doors of my standard cab F-150, and I'm powering them off a Kenwood KDC-MP4028 head unit. I may end up amping them later, but for now they sound great with HU power. They do tend to distort some types of bass, usually on a specific song. I'm really only using the tweeters, though, because I have them high-passed at around 100 hz (180 when I get my subs), and I have the bass on my HU at -8, while the treble and mids are at +4. The tweeter is amazing. Very crisp, clear, and loud. My friends think I have a component system with seperate tweeters, they sound so good. However, with these speakers, EVERY sound carries, not just the "tisk tisk tat". Very nice. I love listening to "And then What" by Yung Jeezy, because it just sounds so amazing on these speakers.

So in review, AMAZING highs and mids, average lows.

Pros:

Cons:

THEY FIT !!!!!!

Doug from Sacramento, Ca. on 7/23/2005

These fit in my 99 Tacoma front and rear and sound great. I removed the old factory paper cones and these fit in the factory brackets. I didn't have to use the brackets Crutchfield sent or the wiring adapters. I simply unsoldered the factory wiring and resoldered to these. They sound great! I am very picky about fit and sound and they matchup with the Alpine CDA-9847 Head-unit I just installed perfect. As with all Alpine products they scream out Quality.

I have these speakers along with the 3 way 6x9 Alpines in my 94 honda accord powerd by a Alpine amp. With the amp they sound great!! But i must say that if you dont power them they come off a bit weak and not as crisp or clean.

Great Speakers

2003 Toyota Tundra
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I installed these speakers in the rear doors of my Tundra and they really performed. The highs are clean and clear and the bass was impressive for just a 6-1/2". The adjustable tweeters can be positioned exactly where you want them, unlike the Infinity's which are only semi-adjustable. The Alpine tweeters have a cleaner sound than the Infinity's. I also installed Dynamat around the speakers which not only makes these Alpine's sound better, it also blocked some road noise too.

Pros:

Cons:

not bad, but there is better

Rob from minneapolis, mn on 4/18/2005

ive had these for about a year now and for the most part im pretty happy with them. the highs that they produce are actually pretty clean and clear. the bass is lacking on these speakers though. i have to be somewhat careful with how loud i play my system just becuase im afraid of damaging these guys. the infinty references i had in my old car sounded quite a bit better. overall theyre not bad for the money though. im definitely considering upgrading to alpine type-R's though.

Pros:

Cons:

There are better options

Jeff from Chicago, IL on 4/11/2005

My entire setup--from the head unit, to the amps, to the speakers--is all Alpine. The only reason I've stuck with these speakers is because I like everything to match. I have Type-S components in the front and 2-ways in the rear. The components are pretty good, but the 2-ways are nothing special. I just installed an Alpine MRP-F240 amp, and while it definitely improves the sound, the 2-way speakers still are only mediocre. Very fat, washy sound. I happened to have a pair of Infinity Reference 2-ways (6002i) that I could compare them to, and without a doubt the Infinitys sounded much more crisp and clear.

If anything, I have a bias toward Alpine, but I still have to recommend Infinity Reference speakers over Alpine Type-S.

Pros:

Cons:

Alpine Quality as Usual

Mark from Petersburg, VA on 3/31/2005

I originally had these speakers hooked up directly to a receiver giving them about 17 watts RMS and they played loud enough for me. The quality remained high until I started running out of power. Once hooked up to an amplifer, these speakers sounded even better at all volume levels.
Make sure these speakers have some sort of enclosure with some space. I originally had these on a rear car deck with just about no enclosure space and they could not perform (no bass) like they should. Once I cut out some room for them to breathe, they rocked.
On the box, there is a speaker frequency chart - based on the chart, I recommend you set a low pass filter at about 80Hz (Alpine's magic crossover #). Even though the speakers can get down to the mid 30Hz range, it won't be loud enough to matter without distorting.

Pros:

Cons:

Great Speakers At A Reasonable Price

Peter from Manorville, NY on 3/19/2005

I installed two pairs of Alpine SPS-170A speakers in my 1996 Volkswagen Passat Sedan along with the new Alpine 9820XM head unit. The combination offers up simply gorgeous sounds while not completely empyting one's bank account.

These two-way speakers are crystal clear throughout all frequency ranges. The tweeters reproduce highs accurately but with a certain amount of warmth. The large speakers have enough backbone to add punchy bass lines even though I did not install a subwoofer with my system. The midrange is terrific and also delivered with warmth. The build quality of the units is excellent, which is what I have come to expect from Alpine's products.

Also, contrary to what I was advised on this site, they fit absolutely perfectly in my Passat! (Check into the recommendations guys, these fit my front and rear doors perfectly and I was able to also use the factory grills!)

Altogether, I highly recommend these speakers if you are looking for high quality sound reproduction at a reasonable price. I do not believe these Alpine's can be beaten too easily.

Superior quality

Christopher from Cape Coral, FL. on 3/5/2005

Just installed them today, and within 5 minutes I knew I made the right choice. No matter what I played, Tantric, Dr. Dre, Korn, or Alice in Chains, they all sounded perfect. I didn't have to tweak the sound for each ype of music. These speakers are by far the best 6.5's I have heard. Now I will be buying the 4" Alpines for the front. These speakers combined with my CDA-9851 head unit make my car complete!!!

Pros:

Cons:

Great Speakers for the Price$$

Features

Aluminum-coated Polypropylene Woofer Cones: Each speaker features an aluminum-coated polypropylene woofer. Aluminum adds strength and heat resistance to polypropylene, resulting in reduced distortion and improved reliability.

Air-injected Rubber Surrounds: For a smoother response and improved durability, the woofers use air-injected rubber surrounds.

Titanium-coated PEI Balanced-dome Tweeters: Each speaker has a 9/16" titanium-coated PEI balanced-dome tweeter. PEI (Polyetherimide) is a polymer that offers high resistance against harsh environmental extremes, superior rigidity, and sonic purity. When combined with titanium, the result is a tweeter that delivers crisp, clear highs. The tweeters are adjustable and may be swiveled 15 degrees for optimum imaging.

Adapter Rings: The supplied adapter rings allow the speakers to be installed in a standard 6-1/2" opening or an oversized GM/Chrysler 6-1/2" opening. The adapter rings have tabs that must be broken off when the speakers are mounted in a standard 6-1/2" opening.
