About the Alpine SWR-T12

Dominic DeVito
What good is a shallow-mount sub if it doesn't move air? Alpine's Type-R Thin subwoofers combine low-profile design with high power handling to pump out powerful bass in your vehicle's hard-to-fit spaces. These shallow subs offer a mounting depth of 3.5 inches, but their cone excursion is nearly as long as that of their regular counterparts — you'll hear deep, satisfying bass from the resulting massive air movement.

Big bass, not much space

The special spider design uses a series of adjacent rolls to get the cone moving without requiring a lot of space, combining with the advanced motor structure that reduces the sub's profile while maintaining accuracy. A dynamic neodymium magnet structure allows the sub to handle more power than the typical shallow-mount sub.

Handles plenty of power

The SWR-T12 12" thin subwoofer handles up to 600 watts RMS for tremendous thump. Its aluminum woofer cone works with the multi-roll Santoprene™ surround for performance that will really surprise you. The finned aluminum heat sink is directly coupled to the frame for rapid heat dissipation that'll keep your sub running cool. Type-R Thin subs present ideal solutions for applications with limited available space, such as pickup trucks and compact cars.

Enclosure Compatibility

Features

Alpine Type-R Thin Subwoofer: The Alpine Type-R Thin subwoofer series combines the low-bass performance and power handling of Alpine's traditional Type-R subwoofers in a thin package optimized for extremely small enclosures. The new Type-R Thin boasts no less than 7 unique Alpine technologies in its industry-first design. These innovations allow the Type-R Thin to have the output and power handling of the traditional Type-R series in less than half the depth. The new Type-R Thin design has the same DNA of the standard Type-Rs; demanding cleaner, deeper bass extension, faster, more accurate transients, and even greater output capability.

Parabolic Aluminum Cone with Force Transfer Assembly: A Heavy-duty magnet assembly calls for heavy-duty cone materials, such as parabolic aluminum cone woofer. This specially engineered aluminum cone is reinforced by an injection-molded force transfer assembly, giving the cone structure outstanding stiffness while minimizing moving mass. A centering ring in the force transfer assembly is also engineered to lock the voice coil assembly in place. This makes the entire piston assembly extremely strong and linear.

FEA Optimized HAMR Surround: The High-Amplitude Multi Roll (HAMR) Surround Design allows for extreme excursions without sacrificing valuable cone area. FEA Optimized for linearity and made with injection-molded Santoprene , the HAMR surround is a key part of the suspension system that provides accurate, distortion-free control at extreme excursions.

1.5lb Neodymium Magnet with 4" Voice-Coil: The Type-R Thin subwoofer's 1.5lb neodymium magnet has 5x the magnetic strength than standard ferrite magnets used for most subwoofers. This powerful magnet combined with a massive 4" (100mm) voice coil delivers increased power handling and more accurate, louder, cleaner bass with even more control.

Segmented Spider Design: You can count on Type-R Thin subwoofer to deliver strong, impactful output like its predecessors. Its Revolutionary Segmented Spider Design provides the Excursion of a tall subwoofer. Most shallow-mount subwoofers have less output than traditional deep subwoofers, since their shallow frame limits how far their cones can move at high power levels. The Type-R Thin subwoofer uses Alpine's patent pending Pass-Through Gap Geometry, allowing the unique Thermoplastic Elastomer Segmented Spider to completely pass through the motor structure. This means the cone and voice coil assembly have the clearance needed for over 50mm of peak-to-peak excursion, allowing for massive output even in such a shallow frame.

FEA Optimized Dual-Sided Machined CRC Motor Structure: An FEA Optimized Dual-Sided Machined CRC Motor Structure creates a symmetrical magnetic field with evenly distributed flux density to greatly reduce distortion, while further improving power handling and output.

Radial Vented VC Heat Sink & Airflow Management System: Alpine's Patented Radial Vented VC Heat Sink and Airflow Management System (helps to minimize power compression and ensures reliable long playing time by actively pulling (or transferring) output-robbing heat away from the Voice Coil.

Cast Aluminum Frame: The new cast aluminum frame is directly coupled to the machined aluminum shorting sleeve assembly. This allows the entire frame to act as a heat sink for sustained power handling, even in the most extreme of applications.

Speaker Terminals: This Alpine Type-R Thin subwoofer features a pair of heavy-duty screw-terminals on one side of the woofer's basket that will accommodate up to 8-gauge speaker wire. A hex-key is provided to adjust the set-screw terminals.

Gasket Cover: Alpine uses a Concealed Mount Gasket System to cover the mounting screws for a clean look. The black rubber gasket ring comes already installed on the woofer and needs to be removed before drilling the mounting screws (not supplied). The gasket ring then snaps back into place once the woofer is mounted.

No Break-in Period: There's no need to play your sub for hours to break it in to achieve consistent performance. This sub is designed to deliver consistent performance right out of the box. Since this revolutionary design is made with an injection mold resin, rather than phenolic stiffened textile, this new spider requires no break-in to achieve ideal performance. A Co-Molded Aluminum collar attaches the voice coil to the spider to ensure a reliable, high-strength design.

Enclosure Compatibility

Thin Mount: The Alpine Type-R Thin series subwoofer has been engineered to offer more installation flexibility and application versatility to build the ideal sound system. At 3-1/2" deep, this 12" sub provides deep bass performance where it normally couldn't fit. And the 0.6 cu/ft ideal sealed enclosure size (or 1.0cu/ft ideal vented enclosure size) means great bass performance can go just about anywhere in your vehicle.

Recommended Sealed Box Volume: The recommended sealed box sizes range from 0.4 cu/ft to 0.75 cu/ft. Within this range, the ideal size is 0.6 cu/ft.

Recommended Vented Box Volume: The recommended vented box sizes range from 1.0 cu/ft to 1.5 cu/ft. Within this range, the ideal size is 1.0 cu/ft. A slot port with the following dimensions should be used: 3.625" (W) x 3.5" (H) x 28.75" (L).

Yes. The woofer is "Radial Vented" so, you can mount it right up against the back wall of the enclosure. I hope that helps. My Bio: https://www.crutchfield.com/bio/Ryan
