Our take on the Alpine CDE-W235BT by Crutchfield's Zak Billmeier
Big two-line display and simple controls
It's like getting twice the Alpine for your dash — the CDE-W235BT CD receiver fills your vehicle's double-DIN (4" tall") opening, giving you an easy-to-read two-line display and easy-to-reach controls. You'll also enjoy that legendary Alpine sound quality, and a stereo that looks pretty handsome in your dash.
Stream music, talk hands-free
The CDE-W235BT lets you keep your hands on the wheel when a call comes in, and ensures you and your caller make a clear connection. Once you mount the included microphone in a good spot, you can adjust the mic's gain to best match your speaking voice. You can also tweak the phone output and ring volume ahead of time, so you won't go diving for the volume knob every time someone calls.
When a call comes in, you'll see your caller's name and phone number on the two-line display. You can answer the call by tapping the phone button on the front panel, or set up the receiver to answer all calls automatically. You can see some useful phone info on the screen, too, like a signal strength indicator and even an alert when a text message comes in.
Don't forget your iPhone
Your iPhone is the key to a seemingly never-ending supply of music. First, you can dive into all the tunes in your iTunes® library using the CDE-W235BT's controls. You can also play the audio from several popular Internet radio apps, meaning you'll never run out of music, no matter how long your journey may be.
Want to keep your steering wheel controls?
In most cars, you'll need an adapter to retain those controls with this car stereo. Connect a few wires, then program the adapter for your particular car and radio, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls. You'll see the adapters that work with your vehicle when you add this receiver to your cart.
Bluetooth note: Use of this receiver's Bluetooth features will depend upon your phone's Bluetooth capabilities. Learn more in our article explaining Bluetooth profiles.
iPod/smartphone note: If you're going to use your iPod or smartphone with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for compatibility information.
Note: Sorry, Crutchfield cannot ship Alpine products to Guam or Puerto Rico.
Everything I purchased installed easily, sounds great, made my stock speakers come to life. Thank you Crutchfield.

The ability to retain steering wheel controls with aftermarket receivers will be determined by the receiver you are using and the vehicle you have. For full information on this type of integration (including the parts you will need) please contact an Advisor by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat. [ Krissy Nov 24, 2014 ] Staff
I forwarded your question to an Advisor and they responded with the following: You will need to use the PAC MS-FRD1 Ford Sync Radio Replacement interface (item # 541MSFRD1) in order to retain the sync functionality of your vehicle. In addition the PAC SWI-RC Steering Wheel Radio Control Interface (item # 541SWIRC) will be needed to keep the steering wheel controls. When used together you can control the Sync via the steering wheel controls. If you would like to discuss further you can contact an Advisor directly by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat. Crutchfield supplied and/or reccomended the accesories that were needed for installation. The accesory itself ie wiring harness had easy to follow instructions. Crutchfield sent print outs as well. Hope I was able to answer your uestion. [ ANDREW M Jul 13, 2014 ]
Yes. Complete installation for my car, Toyota celica. Simple instructions. Had it installed in 20mins. [ MARK Jul 12, 2014 ]
When I installed the unit into an 04 Ford F150 the instructions which came with the unit worked perfectly. The only issue would be having to splice the existing wires to the unit, but the attachment connector helped a great deal. Plus Crutchfield tech assistance is incredible. [ STEPHEN B Jul 12, 2014 ]
Yes it did cause I had to tie it in with my onstar system. It was great! Hope this answers your question. [ KENNETH W Jul 12, 2014 ]
Jeff, do you know if the firmware in the units you would sell today is the newest? The reason I need to know is because like the instructions from Alpine say that if you have problems, you could damage the unit. Unfortunately, that was my experience. I want to replace it, but not if I have to update the firmware. [ Bob Sep 22, 2014 ]
Updates and info for this receiver can be found on the Alpine website here: http://www.alpine-usa.com/support/search/?q=CDE-W235BT [ Jeff Jun 09, 2014 ] Staff
You will want to contact an Advisor by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat to discuss compatibility with your factory system. They will be able to pull up your vehicle and see if this will integrate. If it does not, then they will also be able to discuss other options with you. [ Krissy Apr 23, 2014 ] Staff
Because my installation was in an older vehicle (99 montero), I choose not to activate dimmer fuction, because it could cause reverse polarity and short (and I did experience the problem). I taped the dimmer wire. This problem is not unique the CDE-W235BT it happens on others as well. I liked unit, especially the blue tooth. I also installed the same radio in my daughters 2000 siena van. [ JOSEPH Apr 21, 2014 ]
There is a illumination wire on harness that is conected to car light wire on vehicle so brightness can be controlled by vehicle dimmer switch. [ PATRICK Apr 21, 2014 ]
Yes they do work. This stereo is setup for a iphone. I wish someone would design a radio around windows phone since I can only use basic functions on most radios since they only support Apple and Android. [ PATRICK Apr 21, 2014 ]
Sorry but I am not familiar with aac files [ GLENN Apr 08, 2014 ]
*** This has been tested on an iOS 4.2.1 Device *** If you want to play the "acc" files directly though a USB device, or Disc the "acc" files will not play. If you plan to attach your iOS device to the unit with an iOS to USB cable, the iOS device will decode the "acc" files and play them on the unit. There are also a number of functions on the unit to control the iOS device, much like the iOS device itself. I've only tested this with an older version iOS 4.2.1 device, any device after 10/12/11 with iOS 5.0.0 has not been tested. [ BRIAN Apr 08, 2014 ]
Larry, I believe the ESC button stands for 'escape'. Whatever mode you are in, ie; time set, fader, etc, by hitting the escape key it allows you to 'start over'. It will return to your original screen for a 'do over'. The ESC key also acts as a 'hang-up' to terminate a phone call. I hope this helps you some. This is how I have been using the ESC key. Good Luck, Brian R [ BRIAN Apr 05, 2014 ]
As far as I can tell, it serves mostly as a back button. Most notably when when searching through files or setting up your bluetooth settings. Holding the ESC button for an extended period will take you back to the home screen. Hope this helps. [ LAWRENCE S Apr 05, 2014 ]
Yes, and not only that it can stream through this radio using Bluetooth, which is how I stream Spotify to the radio. [ DWAYNE Mar 28, 2014 ]
Sorry, no idea. Don't use Spotify. [ DAVID M Mar 28, 2014 ]
I don't know I only use mine via Bluetooth [ ARTURO Mar 28, 2014 ]
I Pandora via USB and Bluetooth and it's work great. I would imagine it will do the same with Spotify. [ STEVEN A Mar 28, 2014 ]
It has a capacity for one at a time. [ PAUL Mar 06, 2014 ]
one [ DARRELL J Mar 06, 2014 ]
Just 1, but it has a USB port to plug in a thumb drive. You can put a lot of music on a 16G thumb drive. [ JANICE Mar 06, 2014 ]
One [ ROGER F Mar 05, 2014 ]
1 cd [ STEVEN Mar 05, 2014 ]
It holds one CD. There is no CD changer. [ MARK Mar 05, 2014 ]
It only holds one cd at a time [ MARK Mar 05, 2014 ]
It is just a single disc player. Awesome unit I love mine [ JOEY Mar 05, 2014 ]
Just one [ DUSTIN L Mar 05, 2014 ]
Just one at a time! Also, if you have steering wheel controls, you will need the adapter to be able to keep using them. (70.00 I think). Worth every penny ,to me! Great head unit. [ JEFFERY D Mar 05, 2014 ]
Six (6) [ STEPHEN B Mar 05, 2014 ]
Just one, but it supports MP3 & WMA formats... so if you burn your favorite playlists on your computer a single CD can can hold about 13 albums. Personally, I mostly use my unit in AUX mode for my Sirius Satellite and in USB mode to control my iPad. I've also started using a bit of the BT AUX mode to listen to music on my iPhone. Lots of options, and the User Interface is well thought out and ez to use unlike some other units I've used. [ MARK Mar 05, 2014 ]
As far as I know it is not a multi disc. But using a flash drive Edith music on it does work very well. So you can put your music on your computer and it works great. [ BRENT T Mar 05, 2014 ]
hi Jeff, The Alpine CDE-W235BT is a single CD playback unit. A single play unit is much more durable....less moving parts. Eric [ ERIC Mar 05, 2014 ]

Yes it does charge your I-phone [ JAIME A Jan 26, 2014 ]
it charges my Ipod Touch that is mounted next to it in my truck. I have tried an Iphone 4 and it charges that also. [ JIMMY Jan 21, 2014 ]
Yes, this unit will charge an iPhone through the USB port. I tested with an iPhone 4S; a 5S should do just the same. [ TOM Jan 20, 2014 ]
Charges my iPod and iPhone just fine [ ROBERT Jan 20, 2014 ]
I recall that my Alpine system did provide a charge to my iPnone through the USB connection. Why it would not charge a iPad is confusing; the power requirement should be identical. [ DAVID Jan 20, 2014 ]
I'd does charge the iPhone 5 from the front port. [ JAMES Jan 20, 2014 ]
Yes it charges my iPhone 5 very well when connected [ JOHN Jan 20, 2014 ]
It works great using blue tooth. This radio is amazing [ BOBBY Jan 21, 2014 ]
It should work just fine wirelessly with bluetooth. We interface our andriod phones via bluetooth and have been able to play and control music, audiobooks and the phone for calls/navigation without issues. It also works well plugged into the audiojack if for some reason the bluetooth isn't connected. [ Owlman Jan 20, 2014 ]
I have an iPhone so I don't know. Sorry not to be able to help. [ ALFRED Jan 20, 2014 ]
I have a Samsung galaxy note 3 and the wireless works fine! [ RENEE B Jan 19, 2014 ]
You'll probably want to check the bluetooth specifics of both your phone and this unit. It works marvelously via bluetooth with both my Google (LG) Nexus 4 and Nexus 5. Streams music, answers the phone & makes calls, displays phonebook on the screen, music tracks, etc.... [ MADUROBOB`S Jan 19, 2014 ]
I don't have this unit sorry I have a Kenwood [ GARY Jan 19, 2014 ]
I have had trouble with the blue tooth on my unit. Will not pair all the time with my galaxy s4 phone. [ BRAD Jan 19, 2014 ]
My samsung galaxy S3 interfaces perfectly wirelessly with this stereo via bluetooth. I use this feature daily while commuting to listen to podcasts, audiobooks and music. [ Owlman Jan 19, 2014 ]
I have a SiriusXM Edge plugged into the aux input on the front of the radio. It works fine. [ ROGER F Jan 22, 2014 ]
no [ ERNESTO J Jan 20, 2014 ]
I don't know! I use it for it's iPhone connectivity and love it. This is something that a Crutchfield Advisor would easily answer. They are the reason I'm a customer here. Good luck. [ JESSE M Jan 19, 2014 ]
6 answers Hello, Obviously I am looking to replace my factory stereo on my 2011 Hyundai Sonata. I would like a stereo as non intrusive as possible in order not to invade the lines on the existing front panel. Do you have any suggestions on which stereo to buy that can accommodate my request, and if you had pictures of what the stereo looks like after installation, that would be great? Thanks, Jeff [ Jeff B. Jan 08, 2014 ]
I have pictures of it installed in my GMC Sierra. Email me if they would be helpful. webber7374 at the googles. [ JESSE M Jan 19, 2014 ]
I don't have any photos as my son has taken the vehicle back to college. When I first contemplated what the instructions wanted me to do with the Ford Ranger dash that this thing went into, I was not happy. But the install went surprisingly well, work time was not a big issue, fitment was good and yes, I would buy this unit again. Mike B. [ MICHAEL J Jan 12, 2014 ]
This has been a good stereo, my only complaint is that the stereo cannot be controlled with my iPhone 5, it is very limited, other than that it is a good stereo [ MICHAEL Jan 09, 2014 ]
Thanks David.. [ Jeff B. Jan 08, 2014 ]
The week after I installed my Alpine CDE-W235BT, I ended up selling my Acura to my daughter, as i aquired another care from my father-in-law. The Alpine fit very nicely into my Acura. I have not seen the interior of the Hyundai Sonata, but I would expect it would be appealing in most vehicles. I don't have any pictures as my daughter now has the vehicle. [ DAVID M Jan 08, 2014 ]
For details on fit or installation please contact an Advisor by phone or online chat. They will be able to pull up your vehicle and give you the details on what will fit and what you will need for an installation in your vehicle. [ Jeff Jan 08, 2014 ] Staff
Got the unit installed today. Yes you can turn the clock on or off in any source mode. It has a setting to do so. It's not just a button. Happy new year! [ BRAD Dec 27, 2013 ]
I can let you know after Christmas it's wrapped under the tree right now a gift for my girlfriend but I promised I wouldn't open it till Christmas. [ BRAD Dec 22, 2013 ]
Hold the audio setup button until options appear. Use the center knob to scroll to clock. Set clock to on. [ LAWRENCE S Dec 21, 2013 ]
Yeah, the time is always displayed no matter what you are doing n the device. [ BRENT T Dec 21, 2013 ]
I don't use the clock in the radio - too dim and at wrong angle for my poor eyesight. I did go out to my van and cycled thru all the sources and the clock did remain displayed all the time. [ ROGER F Dec 21, 2013 ]
Yes, the time is continuously displayed in all source modes. Additionally, time is displayed in the "off" mode. [ ERIC Dec 21, 2013 ]
Compatibility with factory controls will depend on your vehicle, and if compatible it will require an adapter . For full information on compatibility with your factory controls please contact an Advisor by phone or online chat. [ Jeff Dec 14, 2013 ] Staff
IT works great I have an i-phone 4 that I use with it every day. [ STEVEN H Nov 25, 2013 ]
I don't own an iphone, but recomend reading owners manual. Go to settings on phone to turn bluetooth on. [ ANDREW M Nov 21, 2013 ]
Hey Scott, I don't have an iphone but the bluetooth system always works perfectly with my Android. I imagine it will work fine because the bluetooth is going to be the same regardless of the phone (as long as it's in working order). I hope that helped! [ SARAH Nov 20, 2013 ]
When I first purchased this Unit I was using it with the 4S. I e since upgraded to the 5. Both work fine. I really like this Alpine. Much better than the comparative Pioneer. [ MARK Nov 20, 2013 ]
Sorry, but I use Android, so I have no idea. It does work great with Android 4.1.2. [ ROGER F Nov 20, 2013 ]
It works with my Samsung Galaxy S 3 and my daughter's I phone 4s without any problems. This is a great receiver! [ JOEY Nov 20, 2013 ]
I've never used the bluetooth on this stereo, sorry. [ SCOTT Nov 20, 2013 ]
Can't answer exactly (since I don't own an iPhone 4s), but FWIW my old iPod Touch works just fine. I'm sure your iPhone 4s will as well. [ SHEPPARD Nov 20, 2013 ]
