Our take on the Soundstream VR-931NB

Installation Note: Soundstream's VR-931NB requires adequate clearance for its oversized display when mounted in your vehicle's dashboard. Please call us at 1-888-955-6000 if you require assistance in determining if it will work in your vehicle.

Think outside the box

Soundstream's VR-931NB DVD receiver isn't cut from the same cloth as most in-dash multimedia units. Most are built to be installed in a double-DIN (4" tall) dash opening, so the screen size is by necessity limited to about 7" max. Soundstream's built the chassis of the VR-931NB so it fits into a single-DIN (2" tall) opening, and they've placed a detachable 9.3" screen onto the front. This receiver isn't for every car, or every installation, but if you've got some imagination it could be a real show-stopper in your dash, or a cool addition to an RV. And since the screen is detachable, it can serve double duty as a desktop media player when paired up with Soundstream's KS-1 dock.

Soundstream VR-931NB

Touchscreen controls make it easy to select sources

Bluetooth® is built in

The VR-931NB supports the latest in Bluetooth connectivity technology for quick data transfer, meaning crystal-clear hands-free phone calls and great-sounding audio streaming. Your phone book info transfers in moments, so it's easy to make calls and identify incoming callers. And you'll be able to control your streaming music without having to use your phone or other device  to change tracks.

Media variety and options

With Soundstream's IC-3 cable (not included), you can connect your iPod® or iPhone® to this receiver, and control your music with the touchscreen. Soundstream has also equipped this receiver with a USB port and SD™ card slot for plugging in storage devices with up to 32 GB of capacity, so you should never be at a loss for music. And of course it plays CDs and DVDs, along with recordable discs loaded with MP3, WMA, and AAC files. If you've got a gaming console or other A/V sources, plug them into the front A/V input. When you're ready for some video entertainment, set the brake and enjoy video from DVDs, USB, or SD cards.

Add GPS guidance

You can add Soundstream's NAVIBOX-2 module to this receiver, and view maps of the U.S. and Canada on your receiver's big screen. The module also gives you access to over 12 millions points of interest, so you'll be able to find the restaurant, hotel, or shop you want quickly. Your receiver will anounce street names as you approach a turn, and you can even select a 2D or 3D map view.

Want to keep your car's steering wheel audio controls?
In most vehicles, you can use a special adapter to connect your vehicle's steering wheel controls to this stereo. Connect a few wires, then program the adapter for your particular car and this receiver, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls.

Note: Bluetooth compatibility of this device may vary, depending on your phone and service provider.

Note: If you're going to use your iPod with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for specific iPod model compatibility with this receiver.

Installation Tip: This receiver's faceplate is 5-1/2" tall. To determine if this receiver will fit in your vehicle, check the area 6" straight down from the very top of your factory radio. If you don't encounter any obstructions, gauges, or important vents, you should be able to install this Soundstream. You may have to improvise a little, but it will be worth it to get this cool-looking receiver in your dash.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The 9" Soundstream VR-931NB has a really great look. I was able to put a 9" touchscreen in my 1 /1/2 DIN dash. The "coolness" factor is there. Although it covered up my truck's temperature controls (I drive a 2001 GMC Sierra truck). It also would hit my gear shifter everytime I needed to eject something or get to my temperature controls. This deck has a lot of options when it comes to sound control. There were a lot of cons for me. In addition to the ones already listed; I also had issues with the iPod/bluetooth thing they have going on with this thing. I like to use the bluetooth on my phone to stream music. If you do this you will not be able to see any of the song information or even the current time on the display. i always had to look down at my phone for this information. Stupid. If you want to see this information you can plug your phone in to the deck. Even then things are really confusing. They made it really hard to navigate through songs, artists, and albums. I don't like the bubbly display icons either. It makes it seem like a little kids toy or something. I also was not able to see any album art. I wasn't able upload any pictures from my phone. This thing is not very iPhone friendly. I think I've gotten that point across. I believe it would work better with an iPod. I was really disapointed because I really wanted a touchscreen in my 1 1/2 DIN dash. I am going to exchange it for the Parrot - Asteroid 55W x 4 Apple® iPod®-Ready In-Dash Deck with 3.2" Screen.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I really only have one (to me major)complaint with this unit and that is the IPOD Software interface. I am using the unit with an IPOD Classic 160 GB. Say you are listening to The Eagles and you want to go to The Rolling Stones. When you press the menu button and select the artist category you must start with "a" every time instead of it going to the last selected artist (in this example the Eagles). If you have a large library this is somewhat tedious to always have to start at "a". I will say that there were a couple of times that it seemed to "menu up" the way I feel that it should but this was not consistent. The up/down selection of artists, songs is rather sloooooow too. The other wasted feature is the direct entry number option. Who can remember which song is number 12,345? To me, this feature would be better as an alphabetical selector. The unit does have a lot of features and sounds pretty good. It is much better than my poor old factory unit. The other thing I'd love to see in future versions is a HD radio tuner. IPOD Album art display would be cool too. Also I'm still waiting for the NAV module to be back in stock. Certainly a usuable unit.

Pros: Easy to install, good display, good sound, graphics are easy to read, tons of features

    Cons: IPOD User Interface

    Great peace

    Touchscreen Display

9.3" Motorized Touchscreen Display: The Soundstream VR-931NB features a 800 x 480 high-resolution motorized 9.3" LCD monitor with LED backlighting and iGlass touchscreen technology. iGlass touchscreen technology offers more precise control, greater clarity, and less glare. This unit's touchscreen controls with interactive video graphics make menu navigation easy. The monitor electronically slides out for loading or ejecting a disc, and allows you to adjust the viewing angle (1-4) of the screen.

Note: The motorized LCD monitor measures 9.125" (w) x 5.5625" (h). It extends 3.5" below the bottom of the head unit's chassis and does not retract inside of the unit. This type of design may interfere with your vehicle's instrument panel. As always, please consult Crutchfield's Outfit My Car and talk to one of our Sales Advisors to verify fit with your vehicle.

Detachable LCD Monitor: The unit's LCD touchscreen monitor is detachable to deter theft, and comes with a padded carrying case for added protection.

KS-1 Desktop Media Player (optional): The VR-931NB's detachable touchscreen monitor can be connected to Soundstream's KS-1 desktop media player dock (530KS1, sold separately). The KS-1 allows you to use the touchscreen, SD, and USB functions of the VR-931NB in your home. Dimmer: You can adjust the unit's LCD monitor brightness in 4 steps, including Off.

Parking Brake Detection: For safety reasons, you cannot view a video source on the built-in monitor as long as the vehicle is in motion. In order to display video, the pink wire of the included harness must be hardwired into the vehicle's parking brake light circuit, and the vehicle's parking brake must be engaged. Video on the LCD monitor can only be displayed when this unit's Parking Brake wire (pink) senses that the parking brake has been engaged in the vehicle.

You can make a call from the VR-931NB using the unit's on-screen keypad (0-9), your transferred Phone Book, or a call history data log of dialed and received calls. Your car audio speakers will mute automatically during a call. During a conversation, you can switch between the Private Mode (talking directly on your cell phone) and the Hands Free Mode.
