Our take on the Harman Kardon AVR 3650 by Crutchfield's Marshall Chase
Harman Kardon's reputation is built on a sixty year legacy for solid construction and fine audio quality. The AVR-3650 home theater receiver is an outstanding way to discover why so many loyal Harman Kardon owners accept nothing less.
Lots of 3D-ready HDMI connectivity
The AVR 3650's HDMI inputs let you connect up to five high-definition sources for easy switching, like a gaming console, Blu-ray player, HD cable box and more. Blu-ray movies come through with amazing detail — thanks to the latest, master-quality audio formats built-in. Analog-to-HDMI video conversion lets you hook up your older A/V sources to your TV via a single HDMI connection, reducing cable clutter
Plug and play... and play, and play
The AVR-3650's Ethernet port makes it easy for you to enjoy music files from your home computer, or to access a virtually limitless variety of free music via Internet radio stations streaming from around the world. Plus this receiver's front USB port invites you to pop in a thumb drive loaded with hours of digital music favorites. You can also add a SIRIUS satellite tuner (requires SIRIUS subscription and optional home tuner kit).
HDMI audio/video switching
The AVR 3650's HDMI inputs let you connect up to five high-definition sources for convenient switching, like a gaming console, Blu-ray player, HD cable box and more. Blu-ray movies come through in all their glory thanks to this receiver's advanced audio decoding. Non-HD video sources will look great with using the built-in upconversion circuitry, and you'll only need to run a single HDMI cable to your television, reducing cable clutter.
Your iPod® knows — there's no place like home
The iPod is a great way to take your favorite music and videos anywhere; but it can also be enjoyed on your best speakers. The AVR-3650 makes it easy when you add the optional Harman Kardon Bridge IIIP iPod dock. It connects with a single cable and lets you navigate your music and video libraries on-screen using the receiver's remote. Browse your iPod the way you usually do, whether by artist, album or genre. The dock keeps your iPod fully charged even when the receiver is powered off.
Enjoy the wide open spaces with Dolby® Logic 7 processing
The AVR 3650 reshapes your room into the concert hall, arena or club of your dreams. With special processing, the system creates a new audio ambiance — the feeling that you are actually there. Traditional analog and stereo sources are transformed into a multi-channel experience where the only limit is your imagination.
Custom tailored sound for your living room
Every room presents acoustic challenges. Mastering the sound details of your space is a huge part of getting accurate sound. Note: Dolby Digital and DTS listening modes can only be selected if your audio source is connected to the AV receiver via a digital audio connection (HDMI, optical or coaxial).
Dolby Pro Logic II Music Settings: While listening in the Dolby Pro Logic II Music format, there are three further enhancements you can adjust:
- Panorama: Broadens the front stereo image to the surround speakers to provide a wraparound effect, especially effective when there is limited output from the surround channels, panorama can be turned on/off in the menu.
- Dimension: Allows you to move the sound field forward or backward.
- Center Width: Allows you to adjust the width of the center channel.
PLIIz Height Gain: The PLIIz Height Gain control gives you the ability to change the volume of the front height channels to suit different programs. The control has three settings: Low (normal volume), Mid (moderate volume increase), and High (maximum volume increase). You can also fine-tune the front height channel volume levels.
EzSet/EQ: Harman/Kardon's exclusive EzSet/EQ feature makes it possible to automatically set the AVR 3650's output levels, crossover points, and delay times for each of the 7.1 channels. EzSet/EQ will play test sweeps through the speakers, and using the included microphone make all necessary adjustments. The microphone plugs into the receiver's front-panel headphone jack.
Note: If there are fewer than 5 speakers in your system, do not use the EzSet/EQ process. Instead, use the Manual Speaker Setup.
Manual Speaker Setup: The Speaker Setup menu allows you to manually configure your speaker system. You can set the number speakers (up to 7.1ch), distance of each speaker to your main listening position (up to 30'), crossover frequency (Large/40/60/80/100/120/150/200Hz), subwoofer size (8/10/12/15")and level of each speaker (+/-10 dB).
Dolby Volume: Dolby Volume technology maintains the same volume level no matter what entertainment you might be taking in. Whether you're playing a Blu-ray Disc recording or a music file streaming from the Internet, you only need to set the AVR 3650's volume once to eliminate unpredictable volume differences among shows, commercials, and movies you may be flipping between. No more being jolted out of your seat by a loud commercial, or having to adjust the volume every time you change channels. Dolby Volume offers you an ideal listening environment, maintaining the sound's original balance at all volumes.
Tone Controls: The receiver' provides independent Bass & Treble control (+/-10 dB).
Night Mode: Night mode compresses the audio so that louder passages are reduced in volume to avoid disturbing others, while dialogue remains intelligible. Night Mode can be set to Max, Mid, or Off.
Audio Poll: The Auto Poll feature is used when both an analog audio and a digital audio connection have been made for one source device. If no digital signal is available, the AVR 3650 will automatically switch to the analog input for the source. This situation can occur with some cable or satellite television broadcasts, where some channels are broadcast with digital audio and others with analog audio, or when a DVD player is paused or stopped.
Color-coded Binding Posts: All of the receiver's speaker terminals are color-coded binding posts. They are not 5-way binding posts because a plastic collar prevents their use with spade lugs and they are positioned too far apart to be used with dual banana plugs.
Assignable Digital Inputs: The AVR 3650 features two optical digital (Toslink) inputs and two coaxial digital inputs. Each can be assigned to any of the inputs (except Aux). There is also an optical digital output to transfer a digital audio recording to a connected CD-burner.
Headphone Jack: When headphones are plugged into the full-size 1/4" jack on the front panel, all the speakers are automatically muted.
8 HD Inputs/1 HD Output: The Harman/Kardon AVR 3650 is equipped with eight HD video inputs (7 rear/1 front) & one HD video output. Six HDMI 1.4a inputs (up to 1080p/24Hz capable) let you connect a high-definition satellite receiver, Blu-ray Disc player, and game system for high definition video and audio. Two component inputs (1080i/60Hz capable) provide added HD-capable connectivity and versatility. There is also a single HDMI 1.4a output.
- HDMI Inputs/Output: The receiver is equipped with six HDMI (v.1.4a) inputs (7 rear/1 front) for connecting HDMI-equipped audio/video components. All six HDMI inputs are capable of carrying uncompressed digital audio and 3D 1080p video. There is also an HDMI (v.1.4a) output which supports the ARC function that feeds audio/video signals to your TV.
- Component Video Inputs: This unit features two component video inputs capable of supporting high-definition video signals (up to 1080i).
3D-Ready: The Harman/Kardon AVR 3650 is compatible with 3D-ready Blu-ray disc movies, video games, and other 3D content through its HDMI (v.1.4a) connections.
Note: 3D viewing requires 3D-ready source with 3D content, 3D-ready HDTV, 3D glasses, and high-speed HDMI cable. Other 3D accessories may also be needed.
Deep Color: The AVR 3650 also supports Deep Color, which can display a larger color range than standard-definition schemes. The result is a more lifelike, vibrant picture.
Faroudja DCDi Cinema Video Processing: The AVR 3650's Faroudja DCDi Cinema video processor automatically provides the best picture based on the capabilities of your televisions and the incoming source video. Using built-in Faroudja DCDi Cinema video processing, all incoming video can be scaled up to 1080p and sent through the AV receiver's HDMI monitor output to your television. The Faroudja DCDi Cinema Dual 3D comb filters and 10-bit video processing eliminate the jagged edges and moire patterns seen with less advanced processing.
Video Modes: You may experiment with the receiver's Video Modes to further enhance the picture.
- Sports: Sporting events with lots of motion.
- Nature: Programs filmed outdoors.
- Movie: Typical movies and TV broadcasts.
- Custom: Manually adjust brightness, contrast, color, and sharpness.
Advanced Video Modes: The Advanced Video Modes menu allows you to further enhance the receiver's video output.
- MPEG Noise Reduction: This setting is designed to address two specific types of video distortion: mosquito noise and blocking artifacts
- Cross Color Suppressor: Turn this setting on to remove cross color artifacts, which can occur when high-frequency luminance (brightness) signals are misinterpreted as chrominance (color) signals, causing unwanted flickering, flashing colors or rainbow patterns.
- Flesh Tone Enhancement: Turn this setting on to enhance the flesh tone of peoples' skin.
- Black Level: This setting is effective only when the receiver's Composite Video Monitor Out connection is being used. Set the Black Level to On for a full black-level setting that provides the full dynamic range of black as presented on most DVDs.
- Deinterlacing: Analog video in the NTSC format is interlaced. That is, each refresh of the television screen displays only half the pixels in a frame, alternating between all of the even rows of pixels and all of the odd rows. Modern video displays are capable of displaying the complete frame all at once by progressively scanning all of the rows of pixels from top to bottom. For optimal viewing on a progressive-scan display, the video images must be deinterlaced.
- Film Mode: This setting is accessible only when the Deinterlacing setting is turned on. It compensates for the different frame rates in which film and video are shot. Film is shot at a rate of 24 frames per second (progressive scan), while video is shot at slightly less than 60 frames per second (interlaced). The receiver is able to detect whether the program was originally shot on film and transferred to video, and will compensate appropriately for any authoring errors in the conversion.
HDMI Bypass: This setting allows you to bypass the AV receiver's internal video processing for proper display of 3-D video content and of source devices (such as some game consoles) where the unit's video processing can create delays that can cause synchronization errors between the sound and picture.
ARC (Audio Return Channel): This feature allows audio to be sent from your compatible HDTV to your receiver through the same HDMI cable already being used to send audio and video to your HDTV. This eliminates the need for extra cables connected to your television.
AV Sync Delay: This feature allows you to correct a synchronization problem in which a source device or the video display introduces a significant amount of video processing that causes the audio and video parts of the signal to be out of sync. The audio for all channels can be delayed up to 180 milliseconds.
USB Port: The AVR 3650 can play MP3 (8-320kbps)/WMA (5-192kbps) audio files from a USB (MSC) device inserted into the receiver's front-panel USB (type-A) port. You can browse folders & tracks, as well as control basic playback functions - such as Play/Pause, Fast Forward/Reverse, or Previous/Next.
Network Connection: The Harman/Kardon's AVR 3650's Ethernet port (RJ-45) allows you to connect the AV receiver to your home network and enjoy Internet radio from your broadband internet connection, or music content from DLNA-compatible devices that are connected to the same network.
Note: Use a Cat. 5/Cat. 5E cable to connect the AV receiver's Ethernet port (RJ-45) to your home network.

Note: The AVR 3650 does not support the previous Harman/Kardon Bridge II or III iPod docks.
Zone 2: Two different sources can be played in two locations using the Zone 2 outputs. The receiver has a pair of stereo preamp outputs for Zone 2. Only audio sources can be output to Zone 2 (not video). You can control the receiver from the second zone using the supplied remote control when an external infrared sensor is used. The AVR 3650's surround back speaker outputs can also be re-assigned to Zone 2, so the receiver can power a 5.1-channel system in the main room and a pair of speakers in Zone 2.
