Old school sound meets new school features

Harman Kardon receivers are known for combining a stylish design with sound that packs a punch. That's just what you'll get with their HK 3700, along with some pretty cool features for enjoying digital music. With connections for an iPhone®, USB thumb drive, CD player, and turntable, along with network connectivity, there are lots of ways to enjoy all your music with this versatile receiver. Clean sound from a new "green" technology

Harman Kardon has been working to make their receivers more energy efficient without compromising sound quality. The HK 3700 represents the fruits of their labor. It utilizes Harman Kardon's GreenEdge™ technology. Rather than redesigning the Class A/B amplification stage, this receiver features a new digital power supply. Unlike conventional analog power supplies, this new digital design uses less energy, fewer raw materials, and produces less heat. The result is a lightweight, efficient, eco-friendly receiver that delivers the same sonic benefits we've come to expect from this audio innovator.

Stream music over your home network

The HK 3700 is Internet-ready — connect it to your network router to open up lots of wireless listening possibilities. Stream music from your computer over your wireless home network. You can also listen to thousands of free Internet radio streams from stations around the world, going far beyond the reach of the built-in AM/FM tuner. Download the free Harman Kardon remote app to your iOS® or Android™ device and use it to control the receiver and play locally-stored songs wirelessly through your system. App control requires a wireless home network and a wired connection between your receiver and your network router.

Connect your iPhone or USB thumb drive

The USB port on the HK 3700's front panel lets you plug in your iPhone, iPod®, or iPad® to listen to music. This connection bypasses the device's digital-to-analog converters in favor of the receiver's high-performance DACs. That means you'll get smoother sound with more detail than your iPhone can deliver on its own. You can also use the receiver's remote to control playback with connected Apple® devices. The USB port is also great for playing digital music files on thumb drives by popping them into the USB port.

I'm pretty happy with this receiver. And it has a phono input so I can connect my turntable. Also has a subwoofer input which I really like. And at 85 Watts has plenty of power. It's fairly compact nice design. One drawback is that I cannot connect my equalizer to it and it has fairly Limited sound controls bass treble balance. The owner's manual is really Limited. I still cannot figure out how to get into the menu and I'm having trouble finding help online.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

A great addition (replaced my failing Pioneer amp)to my sound system. Powerful and straightforward to use. Kudos to the rep who recommended it.

Cons: Not aware of any controls to alter the bass and treble ranges nor a way to adjust the balance between right and left speakers. Maybe I just need to discover how to access these features. But I am easily learning to do without.

Exactly what I needed

Sounds amazing! Crutchfield helped me with this purchase and couldn't be happier. I have a powered sub with this unit and it works great.

Pros: Great sound, sleek look

Cons: A little tricky to figure out all the features as the instructions are a bit vague but once you get the hang of it no problems

Good clean sound. Simple setup

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The amplifier works well. setup in under 10 minutes. Simple operation with clean sound. If you want deep rumbling bass, you really need to connect a powered bass speaker with crossover. A pre-amp output is provided for it.

Pros: Simple operation, simple setup, good clean sound.

Cons: If you want rumbling bass, you need a powered bass booster.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a really good 2/4-Channel stereo. It has a lot of RCA inputs for multiple devices. I am using it to run a turntable through the phono input and that works great. I am running the Polk Audio TSi200 speakers and the sound is nice and crisp.

Pros: Plenty of RCA inputs, as well as A/B Channel speakers with a sub output.

Cons: The manual is a little short on the features. It seems that most operations must be done through the remote, which is kind of a pain....

Great amp with all the extras

Mark T from Alamogordo, NM on 11/27/2017

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

It's everything I wanted to replace the 25 year old Kenwood that took a dump some time ago, and it's a better amp! At 85 watts per channel it will blow out the windows, and likely those of the neighbors next door. The dedicated phono input is a must for us true vinyl audiophiles (I am surprised how many more expensive amps don't even have a phono input!). And I require a dedicated sub-woofer input; an absolute must to put some bump into those old Beatles records! I use a 24 channel equalizer/booster with my CD player and had no problem routing it thru the amp. The amp's bass and treble controls are quite sufficient for the vinyl; I like them to sound like vinyl should. But the equalizer adds the additional dimension required to fine-tune the digital stuff. It handles both my three-way floor speakers with 12 inch drivers and the second pair of auxiliary speakers. It's a terrific meat-and-potatoes amp with all the extras I was looking for; and it even cost less than the Kenwood did 25 years ago! My only complaint is that the owner's manual is really skimpy on details, especially on operating the remote, and I found the on-line manual just as useless. It took a bit of experimentation to find the proper combination to activate the CD player/equalizer. And after a week I still have no idea what all those buttons are for. For an old guy who is used to buttons and dials on the amp this is challenging. Otherwise, I never thought I could own a Harmon Kardon at that price. Rock on!

Pros: Lots of power; handles two sets of speakers with 12 inch drivers - no problem. Got to have the dedicated phono and sub-woofer inputs. You can plug your TV or equalizer, CD player or other component into any of the five auxiliary inputs. Can't beat the price for a Harmon Kardon.

Cons: The owner's manual is really skimpy on details, especially on the operation of the remote. And there is zero explanation as to the function of the click buttons on the front of the amp. This is a totally remote operated amp, so you're pretty much on your own figuring out how to make it work. The manual indicates that there is an AC input on the back, like you could plug in a component to the amp: THERE IS NO AC INPUT; only the built-in power cord. Experimentation required. Best guess Mr. Zulu!

Satisfied with the unit

James from Washington on 5/18/2017

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This replaced a 20-year old receiver. I wanted Internet radio, and I now have Internet radio. It has better reception for local FM stations. The installation had a few confusing items, for example how to connect to Internet radio could have been more clear. The manual that comes with the unit does not go into depth, so one must find the more complete manual on HK's web site (easy to find). I had some trouble with the remote and had to discuss the issue with technical support. Technical support was excellent. Otherwise, it is a beautiful unit and good sound.

Pros: Lovely to listen to and to look at.

Cons: I don't like the "stand-by" mode to which it defaults when you turn it off. When you plug into the headphone jack, all external speakers are disabled.

We love this receiver. Nothing overly fancy, but it's easy to set up, easy to use, and does everything we wanted it to. It would be nice if it work with non-Apple products, but we can live with that draw back.

Cons: Only works with Apple products

Weak Sound on Harmon Kardon HK 37 3700

Gary from Santa Rosa, CA on 5/3/2017

The Harmon Kardon HK 3700 lacks rich audio, lacks bass response. Bought a Yamaha R-S202, much happier with audio response, tighter bass, and nice mid-range.

We had not had an update to our stereo system in 25 years. I was looking for a reasonably priced receiver that could replace the OLD one. This receiver was easy to swap out. The documentation was easy to understand AND we are loving the sound. This has been an excellent receiver for the cost. It is also very convenient having the remote for the speakers that are located in different parts of our home.

Pros: Very light and easy to install.

Excellent receiver for the Price

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

My Panasonic receiver stopped working on Thanksgiving. I ordered the HK 3700 from Crutchfield and received it, as promised, the following Tuesday. I chose this receiver because it had a phono jack input, 85 watts per channel which is more than adequate , and an attractive price. Since this is my fourth receiver, I found the setup to be fairly routine although I would recommend downloading the complete manual from HK's website. I was impressed with its light weight, only 13 pounds! The sound is excellent. I'm now a happy listener.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I needed a receiver for my un-air conditioned, sometimes powered garage. Crutchfield recommended the HK 3700, and it's been good for everything I wanted. It works well in the heat and humidity, retains memory settings when power is cut to the garage, and I can connect and stream from my iPhone. The sound provided is great, even through the collection of old speakers I'm using.

Pros: Easy hookup. Compatible with Apple products. Works in less than ideal environmental conditions.

Cons: N/A

Cons: Need better operating instructions. Because of the power I now need to buy new speakers LOL

Just great for iPhone music lovers

whoiskermit from Texas on 6/8/2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have seen 2 reviews now that say this has no balance control. I have never used a balance control in my life but if you need it, YES the HK 3700 has balance control. Select "stereo" from the handset, select "tone control", cycle through "bass" and "treble" (hit tone control each time) to "balance". Use the right left arrows to set balance. (It wold help if HK would revise the manual to show this.) In fact, fiddly controls are the main shortcoming of the 3700. As to the good stuff, never had a class D amp before. This runs cool (at least at the moderate volumes I generate) pushing a pair of Epos Epic 1s. Everything on my iPhone (60 gb), all classical, sounds newly minted. 320kbps MP3 now sounds very similar to my CDs. Wanted an HK receiver since I was a little shaver (and could only afford Kenwood and Sansui). I think it looks great--not that different from the HK receivers of my youth.

Pros: Digital in from iPhone Lightning connector, bypassing not only the headphone amp, but the Apple DAC. No humming or popping or fiddling with iPhone volume.

Cons: Unintuitive distribution of control between handset and receiver. Both handset and receiver buttons do not work in all modes. Manual needs a revision. Build quality seems short of NAD and Cambridge Audio.

statecowdoctor from Northern California on 5/25/2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

After 3 decades my component system was at the end of its trail and I needed to simplify. The HK3700 so far has fit the bill. Clean sound. Powers all my analog sources, as well as iPod, and with a bluetooth adapter even streams my Nexus music files. I've grown to appreciate the remote. Speaker replacement/upgrade next.

Pros: Prompt delivery. Helpful support. Competitive price. Nice sound.

Cons: Manufacturer operating instructions not very helpful. Perhaps it's a generational gap between the analog (babyboomers) versus the digital (millenials+). Plastic face, although clean looking, not the same as the brushed aluminum face of my previous amp and tuner.

Great sound, a little lacking on features

TJ from Tennessee on 5/11/2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I really don't have any major gripes with the Harman Kardon 3700. Easy set-up, great sound quality, and a great handful of features like Internet radio, network connectivity, and all the jazz. My only issue, and it is partially my fault for not double checking, is that there is no auxiliary input, and no Bluetooth, both available on the 3770. Purely due to this fact, I'm thinking about upgrading.

Pros: -Great sound quality -Easy setup -Easily configurable features like Internet radio, network connection -Great aesthetics

Cons: -No aux input or Bluetooth, expected for the price point.

Good feature set, acceptable unit

JonB from Ohio on 12/27/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Lots of features for the price, I would recommend this unit. 5 stars for Crutchfield; I was able to compare units by feature, competitive on price, got the unit in days, even included cable labels!

Pros: 1) Good unit, LOTS of features for the price. 2) This was the only unit I could find the feature set I wanted in this price range. 3) iPod support and vTuner are very nice 4) This unit is replacing a 1991 Denon mid level receiver that is slowly dying, this is an acceptable replacement, more features, not as high quality, not as user friendly. I would recommend this unit with the following caveats:

Cons: 1) No instruction manual in the box only a quick setup. Have to download manual in order to fully setup unit. Poor instructions/menu flow, not intuitive. 2) Poor front panel interface, cannot setup unit without remote. Given what consumers are accustomed to today the software/user interface is right out of the 1990s. 3) Wifi support in consumer electronics can be added for a couple bucks, very odd choice to only support wired Ethernet but that seems to be the convention in home audio.

Just what I needed

Jeffrey L. D. from Newark, Delaware on 12/16/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This receiver is just what I was looking for to replace a two channel Onkyo receiver that died too quickly after the warranty expired. I am using this mostly to listen to Internet radio. Setup was simple; I was able to add my favorite stations to V-Tuner via my computer without a hitch. Buttons on the receiver are a bit difficult to see, however the remote can perform all functions. The receiver easily drives my ceiling-mounted Klipsch speakers.

Pros: Easy setup, Internet connection via ethernet, V-Tuner has all stations I need worldwide, nice big & bright display, great remote.

Cons: Buttons on receiver are difficult to see, as it is on a shelf below my eye level.

Solid Receiver

scubapnw from Seattle, WA on 11/23/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

First off I love the retro look, when it comes down to the functionality of the receiver there is nothing I have to complain about. It powers my two infinity floor speakers and my 8" sub perfectly. Nice size, not too heavy. Perfect receiver for someone not wanting to break the bank but who needs a decent amount of power.

HK 3700,Mostly satisfied.

mdale from USA on 7/8/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I've had to his unit for about 2 years. Mostly satisfied with it.

Pros: Sounds good, looks good, stays cool, like the LFE-out for my subwoofer, easily integrates with my iPod for Pandora streaming, perfect for my small office.

Cons: Does not have L/R Balance - confirmed this with a HK technician. Front-panel buttons feel wobbly and cheap. Volume control on front-panel slowly responsive when need to quickly adjust volume.

Output Power: The Harman/Kardon HK3700 stereo receiver features a 85 watt x 2-channel (8-ohms, 20Hz-20kHz, THD 0.07%) amplifier for great sound quality with little distortion even at high volumes.

High-Resolution 24-bit/192kHz DAC: This stereo receiver is equipped with a 24-bit/192-kHz DAC for excellent sound quality reproduction that is natural sounding.

Harman Volume: Harman volume is an advanced digital signal processing technology to control playback volume. It evens out the volume level on everything you watch, improving your listening experience. Once you choose the volume level, Harman Volume does the rest. It helps you avoid volume increases from commercials, volume differences when you change channels or switch sources, and brings out the dialog.

Analog Inputs/Output: The Harman/Kardon stereo receiver features five analog stereo RCA inputs to connect up to five audio components, and one stereo RCA record output to connect to a CD-recorder and other recording device. Included in the five analog inputs is a Phono input (MM) for vinyl playback.

Phono Input: In addition to the five analog inputs, the stereo receiver is fitted with a Phono input (MM) for vinyl playback.

A & B Speaker Terminals: This receiver features two sets of speaker outputs (A & B), each with binding-post terminals. You can independently turn on or off each pair of speakers, as well as play both pair of speakers. The speaker pairs are wired internally in parallel. These binding post terminals will accept bare wire (up to 10AWG), pin-connectors, and banana plugs (single or dual).

Subwoofer Output: The stereo receiver is equipped with a mono-subwoofer output for connecting a powered subwoofer. The output is full-range, so you will need to connect a powered subwoofer with a built-in crossover.

Headphone Jack: There is a full-size (1/4") headphone jack on the front panel. When headphones are plugged in the speaker outputs are automatically muted.

Network & Tuner Functions

Ethernet LAN Port: The H/K stereo receiver is fitted with a RJ-45 Ethernet (LAN) port to connect the receiver to your home network to access your DLNA music server or Internet Radio.

Internet Radio (from vTuner): You can also listen to Internet radio stations using the vTuner Internet Radio Station database service particularly customized for this unit, providing a database of numerous radio stations around the world. You can search for Internet Radio stations by Location, Genre, New, Popular, or Podcast. You can store up to 30 of your favorite stations.

DLNA Certified: The HK3700 is DLNA (Digital Living Network Alliance) 1.5 and Windows 7/8 compliant for audio networking. This means it's easier for you to access and enjoy digital music stored on your PC. Compatible music files include MP3 (32-320kbps; 8-48kHz) and WMA (5-192kbps; 8-48kHz). You can use your PC to play music content through your audio system, or use the H/K receiver to browse and play music files on computer's hard drive. You can control playback of your streamed audio files from the network receiver's remote control. The receiver also supports ID3-Tag and META tag information so song title, artist name, and album name can be displayed from the unit's front-panel display.

AM/FM Tuner: The Harman/Kardon stereo receiver features a built-in AM/FM tuner with manual, seek, and preset tuning (auto/manual). You can store up to 30 AM/FM presets (in any combination). You're able to scan through these presets (5-seconds each) to help you search for your favorite music. You also can tune directly to a station using the numeric keypad on the included remote control.

USB/iPod Integration

Front-Panel USB Port: This stereo receiver is equipped with a front-panel USB (type-A) port that allows you to enjoy playback of MP3 (32-320kbps; 8-48kHz) and WMA (5-192kbps; 8-48kHz) music files from a USB mass storage class memory device; such as select Android smartphones (Froyo/Gingerbread OS only), portable MP3 players, or USB thumbdrives (not compatible with USB HDDs). The USB device must be formatted in FAT or FAT32. Using the unit's front-panel display and included remote control, you can browse your stored music files on your connected USB memory device. USB portable audio devices that can be charged via USB will be charged when plugged into the network stereo receiver's USB port (5V/0.5A).

iPod/iPhone Direct: The USB (type-A) port on the front-panel provides convenient connection for your iPod/iPhone so you can listen to your stored music and music apps through the H/K stereo receiver. The iPod/iPhone USB digital connection means that the digital audio signal from your iPod/iPhone is transmitted directly to the system, minimizing noise interference and allowing use of the receiver's DAC, not the DAC in your iPod/iPhone. This results in more precise sound reproduction. You can choose to control your Apple device from its clickwheel/touchscreen or from the receiver.. Basic playback functions (such as Play/Pause, Previous/Next Track) can be controlled by the receiver's remote. Song/artist information on your iPod/iPhone will display on your connected the unit's front-panel display. Your iPod/iPhone's battery will be charged while connected to the receiver. IR Input/Output: There is one minijack (3.5mm) remote input and one minijack (3.5mm) remote output on the rear panel of this unit. If the receiver is placed behind a solid or smoked glass door, the obstruction may prevent the front panel IR sensor from receiving commands from the remote. If the unit is positioned so the front panel IR sensor cannot receive commands from the remote, an optional IR repeater system (sold separately) may be connected to the Remote IR In jack and positioned to accept commands from the remote. The Remote IR Out jack can be connected to the remote input jack of compatible equipment to relay commands to that equipment.

Trigger Output: This minijack (3.5mm) output sends a 12-volt DC turn-on signal to another component that accepts a 12-volt trigger, such as a CD player or powered subwoofer.

Plug it in and listen is all you need. [ WILBERT  Nov 07, 2017 ]
Plug in and go. Could not be easier [ Diane  Nov 06, 2017 ]
plug and play [ john  Nov 06, 2017 ]
No other pieces needed, just plug in your turntable and go. [ DAVID  Nov 06, 2017 ]
If your turntable uses a magnetic cartridge, you can plug it into the phono inputs. The phono input has a preamp that will amplify the low signal from the cartridge to drive the speakers. However, if your turntable uses a ceramic cartridge, it would need to be connected to an auxiliary input since the signal from this type is already strong enough to drive the speakers. [ Jon  Nov 06, 2017 ]
No, no other pieces. As long as your turntable does not have a preamp, you just plug it into Phono. If your turntable has a preamp, use one of the inputs marked Analog Audio In. [ Judith  Nov 06, 2017 ]
Sorry, this question is way above my pay grade. I don't even understand the question. [ NICHOLAS J  Jun 04, 2017 ]
I have read through the owners manual and was unable to verify if that was possible. So I would say not likely. Go on line and check out owners manual, [ Robert C.  Jun 03, 2017 ]
I dont know never tryed the rec is great sounds very nice dont think u need one [ john  May 31, 2017 ]
No, I use a usb cord to hook up my ipod or iphone. Its kind of old school. [ Kelly  May 01, 2017 ]
No, not without an adapter. [ MARK  Apr 30, 2017 ]
Yes. Works great [ Diane  Apr 30, 2017 ]
It will handle both. [ Joseph  Feb 05, 2017 ]
Yes as long as you pair them on the same Channel. [ MARK  Feb 05, 2017 ]
Yes. It has a dedicated CD player input [ Scott  Nov 16, 2016 ]
yes, i believe it has a dedicated CD input, although I don't know that the pre-set is any different than the other inputs. [ Alec J.  Nov 15, 2016 ]
Yes it will. My unit has been great. Good Listening ! [ MICHAEL  Nov 15, 2016 ]
I would actually be interested in knowing that as well. Also, my unit plays beautifuly, then just shuts down. I cannot fugure it out. It will come back up for maybe 5 min, then just shuts down again. [ Franklin R.  Nov 15, 2016 ]
yes this unit will take a CD player [ CHARWON R  Nov 15, 2016 ]
Yes, I have an iPod, CD, and turntable connected to it [ Karl  Nov 15, 2016 ]
Yes [ JEFFREY  Nov 15, 2016 ]
Yes, it will. [ David B  Nov 15, 2016 ]
Yes can drive 2 pairs 8 ohm speakers at the same time but will be at half power for each pair if both are on at the same time. [ Gerald  Apr 20, 2016 ]
That is how we have it set up. Four speakers in one large room.... [ Karl  Apr 19, 2016 ]
Yes, that's a safe assumption. It probably wouldn't drive 4 ohm speakers paralleled at 2 ohms though. [ TIMOTHY J  Apr 19, 2016 ]
Yes, this has Speaker A and Speaker B channels, which can each drive a pair of 8 ohm speakers (together or independently) [ TOBIAS  Apr 19, 2016 ]
Not sure--I'm only powering two Klipsch ceiling speakers. However, it's a great receiver. [ JEFFREY  Apr 19, 2016 ]
I Used a standard network cable directly to the router. I listen to Internet radio almost exclusively now. Love it [ Scott  Nov 05, 2015 ]
Since there's no built-in WIFI, you have to connect with an Ethernet cable from your router. [ JEFFREY  Nov 05, 2015 ]
You should be able to with Ethernet connection and remote app on your mobile device. [ Gerald  Apr 03, 2015 ]
I am not aware of a way to do this. Rhapsody requires client software to exist on the receiving device (i.e. the app you load on your computer). The Rhapsody client does not exist on the HK3700 so it cannot receive and play Rhapsody directly from the internet. And I am not aware of a way to stream Rhapsody from a PC to the HK3700, maybe someone else does. I use Plex to stream mp3 files on my Mac to the HK3700. But Plex cannot stream out from a Rhapsody stream in that I can see. On the web it looks like when using Rhapsody on a home stereo receiver you look for one that comes with the Rhapsody client built in. On my HK3700 I stream either from 1) computer resident files via Plex or 2) vTuner via the stations/sites they support. For me this is more than sufficient. [ JONATHAN  Apr 02, 2015 ]
No answer for that. I use it mostly for streaming Internet radio, & it works flawlessly for that. [ JEFFREY  Apr 01, 2015 ]
No [ SCOTT  Apr 01, 2015 ]
Does this reciever have the traditional h/k sound quality [ Jon  Mar 07, 2015 ]
The internet radio works very well, and it sounds great. [ DENNIS  Apr 23, 2014 ]
We have not received any answers from other customers on your question. I would recommend reaching out to an Advisor by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat. They should be able to help answer your question. [ Jeff  Apr 15, 2014 ]  Staff
