Overview

Our take on the PAC SWI-RC Steering Wheel Control Adapter

You want to install an aftermarket stereo in your vehicle, but you hate to give up the convenience of your factory steering wheel radio controls? No problem. PAC's SWI-RC adapter allows you to use the steering wheel audio controls in a wide variety of vehicles to command select radios from Alpine, Clarion, Dual, Jensen, JVC, Kenwood, Pioneer, and Sony.

Installation Note: Some newer vehicles require a special interface for this installation. Click here to see if you need an interface to install the SWI-RC adapter in your vehicle. If you see one, add it to your cart along with this adapter.

Installation is straightforward — connect a few wires, then program the adapter for your particular car and your stereo, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls. The direct connection to the stereo eliminates the need for an infrared emitter, allowing the interface to function even in bright sunlight. Step-by-step LED confirmation makes programming easy. Once connected, the SWI-RC's failsafe memory will learn up to 12 stereo functions, retaining them even if battery power is interrupted. Dimensions: 2"W x 7/8"H x 2-7/8"D. Warranty: 1 year.

Important Note: On some vehicles, you may need a voltmeter to locate the correct wires to connect to the SWI-RC. If you have no car audio installation experience, you should consider professional installation. The SWI-RC works with most Alpine, Clarion, Dual, Jensen, JVC, Kenwood, Pioneer, and Sony stereos that have a wired remote control input port or a dedicated steering wheel input, but please call or email us to confirm compatibility with your radio.

Wiring Advisory: You'll usually have to tap into one to three wires in your vehicle at the radio location to connect this interface. If you're using a PAC OEM integration adapter to connect your new car stereo to your vehicle, then it most likely will have a prewired connector for this PAC steering wheel audio control adapter. In these cases, no additional wiring in required. PAC does provide custom wiring instructions for all confirmed compatible vehicles on their website.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The documentation is confusing. My vehicle wasn't listed on the vehicle application guide, which according to them means my vehicle isn't compatible or it hasn't been tested yet. My vehicle is a 2015, but the newest year on the guide was a 2013, with a date on the guide of 2013. The note closest to my vehicle was obvious it wasn't for my vehicle. I ignored the note, and used the instructions on their website which worked. Also, a software programming procedure on the website was different from the instructions that came with the adapter. Although it worked in the end, to many confusing instructions.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The Swi-Rc steering wheel control adapter was easy to program and works flawlessly on my 2006 F250 with a Pioneer AVH-2300 DVD double din aftermarket radio.

Pros: Good directions, easy connections

Cons: I had a wire in my truck wiring harness that had a bad connection. But no cons for the steering wheel control adapter. Make sure you read directions carefully and set it up for your application!

Disappointed

Michael from Clermont, GA on 8/23/2017

2016 Nissan Frontier S

Not impressed at all with PAC customer service, or Crutchfield for that matter. Couldn't find model year specific instructions on PAC website (2016 Nissan Frontier). Called Crutchfield, was told that a wiring diagram would be emailed. Never happened. Called again, all I got was a link to PAC website. Emailed PAC and got offered the contact info for a local installation facility. Had to figure everything out on my own. At least most controls work - still can't get phone controls to work. Think REAL hard if you hate the stock system bad enough to take a chance on third party equipment. Wish I had saved the money and left well enough alone.

Pros: Most functions work - still can't get phone buttons to work

Cons: terrible instructions, no model-year specific instructions, terrible customer service

Crutchfield response on 8/29/2017 We were sorry to hear about Michael's experience with our Tech Support team. We're having one of our Tech Support supervisors contact Michael to help get this working correctly. We strive to provide the best service, before, during, and after your purchase. Giving it 2 stars since I had to send it back. When connecting to a 2001 intrigue, the directions I got directly from the site were for a 2002. Maybe that was a big deal. Not sure. But the pin out was different than what I was seeing. So I decided to skip it since it was only to be used for volume, program and seek.

Frustrating thing

Chris from Charleston, SC on 4/7/2017

2012 Nissan Sentra
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Needs improvement. Just like others have said, instructions are unclear and on multiple sheets. Many wires are not used on the unit and factory lines have to be cut to add this( it doesn't tell you this, just have to figure it out eventually). Very hard to program because the system is a pain and the button is recessed so you'll need a pen or similar item to push it, while juggling the unit and the controls you need to push in the right order before it times out and you start over. Lots of trial and error. I have most of the functions working but not all of them.

Pros: Makes some of the steering wheel controls work

Cons: Not all of the original functions work. Crappy instructions. Have to look in 2 locations

It was a lot of work to put in, but I have done stuff like this before. Not that big of a deal for me. But once the unit was programmed (no issues there) it worked for about 3 minutes then stop. 2006 Ford Explorer
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I installed this on a 2007 Ford Edge. I downloaded the specific instructions for the car. They were about a 80% solution. I had left over wires that the instructions did not mention. Called Crutchfield and they told me to ignore them. I did and it worked. One area I did not like was the requirement to "cut" two wires from the factory harness and then attach to the PAC SWI-RC harness directly. 20-20 hindsight a better solution would have been to splice into the wire harness. Cutting the wires made this a one way street.

Pros:

Cons: Required to cut factory wires on OEM harness

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I installed this in a 2007 F250. The instructions are kind of extensive for what the product does in my opinion. They could have summed them up and made them a bit more clear. I did like the fact of being able to program the module to specific button functions, this took me a few tries however because if you don't do it exactly in the right order you have to start all over. Had a lot of wires that were not used in my install.

Pros: Once installed and programmed it works like a dream

Cons: Instructions are lengthy and could have been more clear. Also could have an easier way to program the button configuration

Worked perfectly in my wife's 2007 Suzuki Grand Vitara. One thing I love is that you program your steering wheel buttons independently into this controller. Works great. Installing is simple enough (if you can install a stereo, you can probably install this unit). It helps to grab a pencil and make notes on how to install on your specific application. There are many wires and instruction sheets that you won't need to use. On my application, the blue and yellow wire from this unit goes to the input control wire on my JVC (also blue and yellow).

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

So, this product worked like 5 stars, but the directions were a bit lacking. The ground wire actually had a split wired into it that was not mentioned, and the directions on the program were not very clear. I actually used the extra ground to make a ground connection on the new wiring harness to ground out an old OEM wire without having to cut into the OEM harness. It took about 15 minutes of trial and error and then I think I figured it out. Regardless, it ultimately works great. I'd buy it again, especially since I paid half as much another brand offered at another retailer.

Pros: Wiring allowed for a lot of flexibility and functionality

Cons: Directions need some work

I ordered this product to use with my Blaupunkt new jersey. First I called the company that makes the control adapter, they were not sure how to make it work with my radio. I called Crutchfield and they knew exactly what to do, which was to go into the New Jersey's menu and set it up there. Which worked right away.Friends are amazed I got an aftermarket radio to work with my steering wheel controls.

Half works. Everything else programmed and functioned but it would not turn the radio on or off which is important to me. Reached out to PAC customer service and was told via email that turning the radio on or off isn't a supported function of the control adapter, so I'm not sure what function power is supposed to do based on PAC's understanding of what their product does. Requested clarification and heard nothing else back from PAC.

Pros: Bundled with other items so didn't have to pay full price.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I'm conflicted on this review. On the plus side, this device seems to work perfectly and I'm glad it exists. I was able to get the steering wheel controls to do everything I wanted with the new radio I bought, which makes me very happy as I rely on them a lot. On the negative side, it was kind of a pain to install. Having said that, I don't know that there's much this manufacturer could have done about some of that. Perhaps instead of tapping into wires an adapter harness or something, but that could get unwieldy. But I think it suffers a bit from trying to be everything to everyone. The included instructions are huge, but it turns out you don't need much of them. I went to the website to get the instructions for my car, which is a nice feature and they're much smaller. But they're poorly written. I was very confused by them until I went to an online video website and saw a third party describing the process. At that point it turns out there aren't that many steps, and it's not too awful of physical install. But they could have been clearer initially about the subset of instructions that you'll need, that you can get rid of many of the wires (likely), etc. The simplified instructions for your vehicle online could have replaced ALL of the instructions with just a little bit more explanation behind them. The programming step was a little time consuming as you have to start over if you make a mistake. Plus, it wasn't clear what happens if you try to overload instructions to the sa

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Product alone gets 5 stars. It works exactly as it should. The instructions get zero stars. Do your self a favor, read the instructions to figure out what wires you need and a general idea of how it installs. Then call Crutchfield's technical support. That 10 minute phone call will save you piles of time and frustration. Also, be sure to test all controls thoroughly prior to putting everything back together. I programmed "presets" on my controls and tested it and the station changed. I hadn't yet programmed stations so I thought it was working. It was actually just "tuning". I had to program for "track" to get it to go through the presets, even though there was a function called "preset." If this is confusing you, imagine how I felt! At the end of the day, my steering wheel controls work how I hoped they would with an aftermarket radio, and that trumps having great instructions with a crappy product.

A little buggy. I have my CH button on my steering wheel programmed to do preset, track, and hang up and answer calls. So when I press the up CH button it skips the track and also turns off shuffle which is weird. So I will need to reprogram for the 4th time and I will try to remove the preset function and see if that makes a difference. But it was pretty straight forward to hook up if you have the knowledge of installing stereo stuff. If you don't it will be a little tricky.

Used it on my 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee and it works perfectly. There are no delays using the controls like I read on other blogs. The only problem was the programming, directions are incorrect and had to figure out on my own. You do not have to hold steering wheel control (SWC) buttons for 5 seconds. Press and release SWC buttons instantly and only press the reset on the PAC SWI-RC to skip functions not being used.

Everything worked fine for me. Follow the customized instructions for your vehicle from the manufacturers website. Deciphering the included instructions is nearly impossible. Didn't really like having to cut into the OEM wiring to splice it in. Kind of makes it a permanent install instead of something that can be removed later. It would be nice if there were a wiring harness that would work with these things to eliminate splicing the factory wiring.

Pros: worked with no issues, online vehicle specific instructions

Cons: have to splice factory wiring. complicated instructions.

Not the easiest item to install. My particular combination (2013 Hyundai Elantra and Pioneer AppRadio 4) required throwing a resistor into the mix. In the end, my undoing was not paying attention to which pin to connect the wires to. Thankfully, a quick phone call to Mike in tech support straightened me out and I was able to program it correctly and get my steering wheel controls back, albeit without the phone buttons. In other words, if you are going to get this, make sure you get it from Crutchfield, they're the best.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I'm not a professional installer, there was way more to do here than just "plug and play". Now, it was my fault for not reading the reviews or page of this product after adding it to my cart. I wanted my factory SWC to work and I knew Crutchfield wouldn't steer me wrong. So I bought this. Long story short, there's a bit of detective work to getting this wired properly. The instructions are not really clear and are rather daunting to get through in general. I was able to wire it mostly right, but it would't pair with my headunit. but it wasn't until I talked to a Crutchfield support person (thanks Cecil) that I learned I'd need to splice into the factory wire harness, which I had zero interest in doing and nothing to splice with! So, I left this out of my install and will just use the Pioneer remote to control my device. I rarely use the steering wheel buttons in my cars anyway. I'm undecided on whether to keep this device and try later, send it back or save it for the next owner if they want to deal with it. I have no desire at this point to pull the car apart again! In short, it might be a 5 star product, but the directions drop it to 3 stars.

Pros: I'm sure it's great if it works!

Cons: Daunting directions. If you're not comfortable with splicing, you might want a professional installer to do it.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

It works. Mostly. Nice to be able to still use the steering wheel controls to do stuff with an aftermarket head unit. This was probably the most complicated part of installing a new head unit though, which also included running a harness to the factory amp to bypass it (which included pulling the console out of the car). It wasn't that hard to program. I gave it 4 stars because the steering wheel controls' functionality isn't 100% there. There are only 4 buttons vol UP, vol DOWN, channel UP, channel DOWN. Volume buttons work fine. Channel buttons work fine to toggle between radio stations. But the channel buttons used to toggle between tracks on a CD, and that function isn't there anymore. So I did a lot of work (I probably spent 1.5-2 hours on just this part of the install between wiring it and reading the directions and reading the website and splicing the factory harness to make it work) to only regain 2 of 3 OEM functions. /shrug/

Pros: retained some steering wheel button functionality, which is convenient

Cons: Did not retain ALL steering wheel button functionality.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is an unnecessarily complicated install for the average consumer. I'm an IT manager with 20 years of experience taking things apart and putting them back together, and I struggled with this install. The instructions for the SWI-RC seem to have been translated through several languages before finally landing on English. Finding specific instructions for my vehicle (2016 Hyundai Elantra) required a visit to their website, and the provided instructions took several read throughs before I figured them out. Programming the device requires counting flashing LEDs, and pressing the buttons on your steering wheel in a precise order. Remarkably, on the second try of programming, I got it right, which felt kind of like dumb luck. There must be better options than this; but this is what Crutchfield recommended to me when I purchased my Sony XAV-AX100.

Pros: It works, except for one button.

Cons: Poor instructions not written originally in English; programming procedure requires three hands.

Do you want your steering wheel controls to work with your new head unit? Do you enjoy counting blinking lights? Are you dexterous enough to hold the device in one hand, turning the ignition to accessory with the other, and using your third hand to press in a button with a pen simultaneously? If you answered yes to these questions, this device is for you. PAC does provide useful instructions on their web site to take you through each step of the installation. You're not completely on your own... unless your vehicle happens to be a Subaru STI with OEM Kenwood Navigation, which incidentally, is my car. I got to put my electrical engineering degree to work on this project. PAC doesn't supply pin-outs for this car let alone step by step instructions. Crutchfield was able to send me some pics of where to connect it, but configuring this thing without step by step instructions was like solving a mystery. I did get it working with my SONY XAV-AX100 head unit. It was the most labor intensive aspect of the installation. While the I followed the PAC programming setup for SONY, the radio didn't respond to the VOLUME UP button -- the SWI-RC mapped it to something else. Fortunately, the SONY XAV-AX100 includes the ability to remap the buttons within the head unit. Problem solved. So, in the end it did work. If your car is listed accurately within the pac-audio web site, you will probably have an easier go of it, but there has to be bett

Pros: Least expensive option, If you can figure it out -- it works

Cons: For a consumer self-install, it's a big hill to climb, More expensive options aren't that much more expensive, Engineering degree is more useful than it should be

This is all I needed to use to make the steering wheel controls work with my new radio. The instructions were confusing and did not indicate to use the blue yellow stripe to connect to vehicle wiring, I thought it was going to be the 3.5mm plug. I did not verify the correct wire until I got to the trouble shooting chart. I also had problems as even though I set the selector correctly before I powered it the wrong selection was stored. I called and they helped me get it on the correct selection and it works great.

Pros: Works great

Cons: Wiring and default to factory instructions confusing to me. It never indicated to use the single wire rather than the 3 conductor plug for my vehicle.

At first I was a little intimidated by all the wires spilling out of this steering wheel adapter. I actually installed my Kenwood deck and buttoned it all up without hooking up this adapter because I was afraid I would mess something up. After driving around for a few days touching my now phantom steering wheels buttons I decided to give it a go. PAC's website had very specific instructions that made the install fairly easy. I'm glad I didn't give up, now I have my steering wheel controls back!

Pros: Great online instructions. Fairly easy install. Controller works great.

Cons: Steering wheel control seems a little laggy, takes more than half a second from push to result on my deck. Wires seem a little long therefore a lot to button up after installation.

This adapter works, but the instructions for installation wasn't 100% accurate. The instructions for my vehicle specified a Black/White wire to look at in one of the factory harnesses, but it was actually orange. After figuring out the pin the instructions were referring to, it worked like a charm. Programming this device is simple, but it's absolutely critical that the instructions be followed since it talks about button order and it depends on what brand of head unit you have.

Pros: It works well for what you get.

Cons: Installation instructions could be improved a little. Nowhere near as good as the quality the Crutchfield MasterSheet provides, but then again they don't include information about third party remote adapters in their instruction sheets.

Installed on a 2013 Mazda Miata with a Pioneer head unit. Instructions directly from website are vehicle specific and detailed (Crutchfield links you to them). I can confirm you will have to splice into your stock wiring for this install. It was a better option (to me) than not having working steering wheel controls. Still somewhat annoying if you do want to quickly change back to stock. I would like to point out - in my case the "preset +/-" and the "Track +/-" are the same buttons. If you program them both on the Pioneer head unit the "Track +/-" will not work. I skipped the preset and programmed only the track function and it works exactly like stock for me. Not sure if this is how all aftermarket head units will perform or just Pioneer. I did not rate this the entire 5 stars due to the somewhat confusing nest of wires (mine only required 4 of 9), reprogramming to find the correct setting and splicing into factory wiring. However, I am very happy with the outcome if it did take a little longer than I thought it should.

Pros: Steering wheel controls work exactly like OEM.

Cons: Requires splicing into factory wiring. Programming "trial & error" to find the setting that works for you.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

As many others have noted this unit can be a little tricky to program. I first tried to program this unit to operate a Sony receiver in my 2013 Silverado and it would randomly switch what each button would do, i.e. if I were selected the volume up button it would turn the volume up for a period of time and then randomly switch. After calling Crutchfield the advisor suggested there was something wrong with the Sony and sent a new one out. While waiting for the new receiver I realized I wasn't happy with it all around so I canceled that order and got the JVC KW820BT. The unit came in yesterday and I got it in and programmed the PAC SWI-RC. Everything worked and I was so happy. This morning I got in my truck and on my way to work I tried turning down the volume. To my dismay it changed the station. Of course turning up the volume, now turns down the volume. I could not be more disappointed in this product. Now I have to pull my dash apart again and pull this stupid unit out. If you try it I hope it works for you but I could never recommend it.

Pros: You get experience pulling your dashboard apart.

Cons: randomly loses its programming

Pros: none

Poor instructions

Bob from Elgin, IL on 11/10/2016

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a complicated install! the mfg instructions are not car specific and as a result have multiple pages of notes, pictures, etc. Most is irrelevant to any one cars install. The radio mfg (Jensen) directions conflicted with the mfg instructions on which features would work. The exact series of setup pushes did not work and as a result the answer and hangup buttons act as next channel buttons. The elantra I put in in did not have all the steering wheel buttons and there was no way to skip the missing ones so the device simply coded the buttons to the missing features. The mfg needs to create a web site that prints specific instructions for a specific car. If i had not called Crutchfield's tech support, I would have wired it incorrectly. Yea for Crutchfield support.

Pros: allows some radio control from steering wheel

Cons: Only provides some controls, very poor and poorly written instructions.

Works well for my use

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This thing comes with lots of documentation and wires so it's a little overwhelming at first. Crutchfield provides a nice one page doc to get you started and directs you to the PAC website for details customized to your vehicle and receiver. It makes it clear which wire(s) to use, what setting to use on the SWI-RC dial, and the programming sequence. I can see where the programming sequence can be frustrating for some, but I read it 3 times through and made notes before doing the work so it went fairly smooth. I only had 4 basic steering wheel buttons to program so it works great for my use. Don't hesitate to call tech support if you're unsure about something. They really are experts and want to help.

Pros: Crutchfield doc and PAC website provide good instructions. Works well for basic 1-funtion buttons.

Cons: Programming can be frustrating if you're not fast enough.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I gave it Three Stars instead of Five because it works. For one, programming can be challenging. I had to call PAC support to walk me through the voltage check for each button on the steering wheel. If you have multi-function buttons, you may want to look further for steering wheel controls. I also did not like the fact that it's not auto-programmable. Make a list of the features you need and the ones you want to skip, learn it before attempting programming as the unit will "time-out" if you take to long, causing you to start all over. I killed the battery in my wife's car trying to program the SWC.

Pros: It works. At least it's better than nothing.

Cons: Difficult to program. Limits buttons to single function.

I had problems with the unit not wanting to map all of the buttons the way that I wanted. Crutchfield tech support helped a lot, but could not solve it. Put me in touch with the PAC people and I got the problem worked out. Crutchfield sent a new SWI to me as they thought it maybe bad. I just had to send it back. Everyone involved in this was great to work with.

Pros: works well, great tech support.

Cons: Instructions are off a little. That is why it would not map for me.

Works for what I need in my want it for but not fully functional in my Nissan with my Pioneer 2800BS. Unable to program phone buttons due to the HU phone button is not programmable button for the this HU or the car isn't compatible. Not sure which it is. But I did try, when I got it to do 'something' it disabled my track up/down buttons. Turned off car and restarted it and only volume and track seek buttons work, so I'll do without the phone buttons. It's pretty accessible on the HU touch screen anyway.

Pros: Easy to use

Cons: Can't use phone buttons and mistakes make you start over.

Basics work, but not perfect

Scott S. from Herndon, VA on 8/16/2016

2011 Hyundai Sonata Limited

The basics of this device work however it has some limitations. I had this installed at Crutchfield store and they got most of the buttons working, but things like the voice command button would not work with my brand new Pioneer head unit which supports voice command/Siri features. The best they could do was make the voice command button work as a "mute" button. Also, this SWC only allows ONE function per button. You can not program it for a "press and hold" second function like the OEM controls. I'm thinking on swapping out this product for something different because of the limitations, however at least he basics work, which many be ok for many people.

Pros: The basic functions work

Cons: Can not program "dual press/press and hold" functions. Voice command button only works as mute.

This unit was relatively simple to install using the web site which is great because the printed install materials are a disaster. The unit enables all of the steering wheel controls on the '08 Santa Fe so it gets good marks for functionality. Programming this thing is so archaic and frustrating I am sending this back. There should be a wiring harness for this product. instead of cutting and splicing. Troubleshooting guide is all about worthless. There has got to be a better interface on the market and I cant believe this is the product Crutchfield recommends. I got so frustrated programming this thing I wanted to shoot myself.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Programming this thing is like stepping back into the dark ages of technology. Having to cycle through commands is silly in 2016. After a couple of days of working with this, I have most of the buttons working. It still likes to randomly reassign commands from your test phase to the actually using it phase with the engine running phase. The "hey Siri," voice activation especially like to randomly move to a different button. I wish the Maestro was more compatible with my Nissan as there are not a lot of options to choose from. The Access is just as cumbersome and wonky as this one. The last dragon to slay is the track adjust button. It works one way and adjusts the volume the other. I love programming by reading blinking lights as much as the next guy but it is a challenge to troubleshoot when the lights are doing what they are supposed to do but the button commands are not. Someone needs to make one of these units that programs like a Harmony remote online.

Pros: It works mostly Not ridiculously expensive Crutchfield discounts on accessory items are great Crutchfield service is exemplary

Cons: Everything else instructions are not user friendly, troubleshooting support on the PAC site stinks Has a mind of its own when it comes to assigning commands Figuring out what commands in the sequence are not understood by your car is a painful process of trial & error that requires you to run through the entire sequence EVERY time.

This thing works as it should. One thing i wanted to note, when you program it, after you selected your vehicle type, you set it to accept the steering wheel control functions. The instructions say to go in and out of programming mode for each individual function. Thats not how it works. When you enter programming mode, press your steering wheel functions in the order they are listed on the page one time each, the red light flashes in response to each button pressed, until you have gone through all your functions, then exit programming mode as it instructs. Pros: Works on most buttons. There are only so many things that the PAC would do. My car had a mute switch, had to program it to something other than mute.

Cons: Was a pain in the back end, setting it up... wiring is not clear cut as one might believe. Mine had the Red and white wire... this meant i did not need the resistors, very good. I ended up having to take my car to a professional who in a short time had it working, at a cost of 150.00.

This product isn't the easiest install, but it isn't impossible. Remember to read over the instructions several times before starting. There is also an online video that really helps to understand the instructions better. I can now control my volume with the steering wheel controls. However, I can't change functions. Also, trying to skip to the next song while listening to music by Bluetooth only skips back to the beginning of the current song. I may try to go back through the programming sequence again to see if it improves anything.

Pros: Gained some of my steering wheel controls back.

Cons: Function control on steering wheel does not work and the skip control does not work as it should.

Unreliable Operation

Ben B from Round Hill, VA on 6/7/2016

2005 Ford Explorer
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This product has given me a lot of trouble. Although the numerous connection wires give the product compatibility with many types of cars, they just complicated the installation process. It was hard to keep track of which wire went where. Once it was hooked up and the connections were double checked, the steering wheel buttons were correctly mapped to the corresponding parameters on my stereo. Often times, however, the steering wheel buttons seem to have no effect. Additionally, each button works or doesn't work independently of each other. For example, sometimes I can use the steering wheel buttons to turn the stereo up but not down because the volume down button is acting up. This effect seems to change with restarts of my car but can also start and stop working spontaneously. Uninstalling the product isn't worth the effort because, without it, the steering wheel buttons would be completely dead rather than not work most of the time.

Pros: Flexible to "work" with different cars

Cons: Button presses often do not register

This product is junk. Even at the discounted rate, it has no value to you. On Kenwood Radios with a Kia Soul, it disables half of your steering controls, Halfway works. Crashed my radio 4 times. Took seven programming cycles to get it close to working, then after a while, it would just fail again. I would recommend going with a Maestro product (I use the Maestro RR with my Kia Soul)

Pros: None. Completely worthless product.

Cons: Does not function well. Crashes radio. Does not allow use of all buttons. Does not retain memory. Would return, but Crutchfield's policies prevent it, as installer threw away package. Incomplete documentation from Crutchfield and horrible documentation from MFG results in bad install.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This break out box enabled my daughter's Kia steering wheel controls for the after market stereo to continue to work. Only issues is the 350+ step instructions that come with the device and the fact you need to pick out the steps that apply to your specific vehicle. That being said, the company's web-site breaks down the specific steps you need for your specific vehicle. Additionally, it is easier to program with two people. One pushing buttons on the steering wheel and one pushing the "program" button on the device. It took a couple of tries but not the steering wheel controls work great.

Pros: Keeps steering wheel controls in play with after market stereos.

Cons: Directions that come with device are a little confusing. I recommend if you buy this device, use the web-site instructions.

Decided to toss this in the package with the radio I was buying for my kids car since it was so cheap. It looked a lot more daunting to install than it actually was. The only negative I'd give it was that I had to snip off the stock connector and solder on the wires to connect it up. As another reviewer said, definitely go online to their website and generate the directions for your specific car, mine were spot on. The programming was easy once I read it over a couple times, the hardest part was making sure to remember what step you were on for the features since the car I was doing only had 5 (vol +/-, track +/-, and one more button). I remapped the "mode" button on the toyota to instead be the phone answer feature and it worked great.

Pros: Cheap Works well

Cons: Had to cut the stock connector off

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Once installed, this unit is awesome. As a bonus it allowed me to map my own functions to use 2 previously worthless buttons on my wheel for 'play' and 'mute' functions. Don't bother with the printed instructions you get. Go to their website, put in your vehicle info, and CAREFULLY follow the instructions. I did have a couple questions I sent over email to the manufacturer that were answered quickly. If you have questions, ask. Again, carefully follow the order of instructions. Keep in mind you're installing a universal adapter designed to work with a lot of different vehicles. Yes, programming it is tricky. Yes, you'll have to splice into a couple wires. A cheap battery powered soldering iron let me solder in the wires in the car that I couldn't solder before taking my new head unit out to the vehicle. For my Toyota anyway, the splice job was quite easy as it was just into another harness on the back of the stock head unit.

Pros: You can map your buttons however you want. Let me use some extra features on my Kenwood that my wheel didn't originally have buttons for.

Cons: Tricky install if you are not the type to carefully follow directions.

Programming this device to work the steering wheel buttons was a nightmare. The results were incorrect and inconsistent after repeated (25+) attempts following the same format. Only after taking it to a local retailer and a stroke of luck did it set up correctly. The technician I took it to locally tried for over an hour and had given up when it finally set correctly. He said this device was an older one and unreliable. He also had the product technicians on the phone, who were of no help. Save yourself the aggravation and purchase an automated device (they are only a little bit more - but worth it).

Pros: Working for now

Cons: Very difficult and inconsistent to program effectively. Cost a few $$$ less than the new ones but add a lot more money for a professional to wrangle with for 2 hours.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The install of this unit is much more difficult than the Kenwood radio I installed at the same time. But if you follow the instructions carefully, it is not overwhelming. I installed it on a 2005 Honda Van with a Kenwood receiver. You have to cut two wires coming out of the honda that go to the honda connector and then splice them to this unit. There are two black wires on this unit which are both black and they both must be connected to two different wires. This was a source of confusion for me. The other source of confusion was where to hook up what wires to which set of Honda cables. Once I was clear on this, the assembly was straightforward but you do have to cut honda wires. The connection to the JVC was straightforward but there were some caps that have three wires connected to them, such as power and ground. If you have never installed a car stereo, this could be a bit confusing as there is nothing in any instructions that specifical says this. I needed help from crutchfield and they happily set me strait. I did call the manufacturer too when I could not get it programmed and they quickly set me straight about the second ground wire connection which solved my issue. Once your wiring is 100%, Programming the unit is fairly simple. Follow the step by step instructions to the letter. There is a 7 second timeout if you are slow on any of the 14? steps that might require you to start over.

Pros: It works with my old Honda.

Cons: Installation at bit advanced. You must program the unit prior to plugging in your radio.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Crutchfield treated me well while ordering and needing a little extra help. I followed the instructions (called once and then felt like a dope because the answer to my question was obvious) and it works perfectly. I have six steering wheel button controls and I was able to assign them with any of the available commands. Eventually, I assigned them the factory labeled options because they seemed to be the most useful. I guess Mercury did a little research before designing it. Would definitely recommend this product.

Pros: Great company and great products. Everything works as described and I installed it myself (I'm handy, but no professional).

Cons: None.

Jerry B from San Jose, CA on 4/25/2016

2003 BMW 3 Series
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I never was able to get this to work well. It requires splicing into the factory harness underneath the steering wheel, fishing wires through to the radio, then programing. I got the wireing part done, but the programing is difficult to do, and then I was able to progam was volume change and maybe station preset up. 3 of the 6 buttons on my Dash are not compatible with this unit. The Voice Call, Source selection and the preset Down Button on my BMW 325I factory steering column will not work with this unit. I called the PAC company, and the Tech support guy said that those buttons will not work with this unit, and he suggested another unit. I will be sending this back

Pros: none

Cons: hard to program, limited useage

Works perfectly. With being used to using the steering wheel controls for the factory head unit, I knew that I would instinctively reach for those controls first. The added cost was well with the convenience of adjusting the volume +\-, muting the volume, or changing the source without taking my eyes off of the road.

Pros: Excellent value; provides convenience and safety while driving.

After installing this, and programming it, and rechecking that I wired everything correct, not all of the steering wheel buttons worked. And only gave me a few functions. The programming process to set this thing up is long and confusing. I ended up using an interface from a previous install. The Axxess ASWC-1 worked perfectly on multiple vehicles, with the proper harness, and Automatically programs itself to the car and radio.

Pros: Easy wiring, multiple vehicle options

Cons: Has To Be Programmed. Doesn't always work.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I installed this unit along with a new Pioneer receiver and wiring adapter, and I think trying to figure out exactly how to install the PAC SWI-RC took me longer than all the rest of the installation process put together. Installation instructions were just terrible; English is obviously not the primary language of whoever wrote them. After finally figuring out what to do (thank to several internet forums, but certainly no thanks to the manufacturer's website), I realized that those instructions could have been made clear with just a little bit of effort. What a shame. The installation itself was not too difficult, but next time I would gladly pay more for a unit with a vehicle-specific harness adapter rather than having to splice into the wires on the vehicle harness. Programming instructions were much clearer (though still not especially well written). Programming for my vehicle was pretty easy, and my steering wheel controls worked perfectly the first time. This is the only reason I'm giving the PAC SWI-RC 2 stars instead of 1.

Pros: It works

Cons: Terrible installation instructions

This adapter allowed my fiancé to keep her steering wheel controls in her Honda CRV. The instructions you were print out from PAC's website were Extremely confusing when it comes to programming the actual functions of the steering wheel controls. In the end i was able to successfully program volume up / down, and i somehow added mute to the mode button. I wouldn't have purchased this but Crutchfield has an awesome discount deal when buying with a head unit.

Pros: kept volume up and down , mute , steering wheel functions. great deal from Crutchfield deck package.

Cons: very difficult to understand directions. i understand that splicing into the factory harness has to be done, would be nice if some kind of an adapter was available as there is very little room to splice into those wires behind the dash and harness.

I would wish I had other options to keep my steering wheel controls. The instructions are terrible. They tell you to use the white wire for install. DO NOT USE T-TAPS!! The wires that you are splicing into are small, and the the t-taps do not cut through the insulation well. I was using t-taps to avoid cutting the OEM harness wires, but I couldn't get the product to work, so I ended up just cutting the wires and using regular butt connectors. All that said, once I did that, the product worked flawlessly and I liked the way I could program the steering wheel buttons to do anything I wanted.

Took me 3 sets of instructions, 3 calls to 3 different Crutchfield advisors, and finally a call to the manufacturer to get it hooked up. Instructions that came w/it are wrong. Got new ones from a Crutchfield tech but those were wrong, finally have rep from PAC tell me that diagram is wrong, so just trust him. Almost sent back to Crutchfield, but would have cost me $10 to return; almost went to best buy to finish installing for me, I finally got it and it actually works. Miracle. Lots of stress getting there though. Had to clip 2 wires in my car's harness b/c I have the nav; but didnt have to clip one in the navi harness even though instructions said I had to.

The downloaded website instructions don't match the included package instructions. The instructions that came with it specified one extra ground needed that the website and the support team missed. I programmed the thing as directed, and I still haven't managed to get my steering wheel controls to work. I'll need to remove the stereo and make another phone call I suppose. Nothing I have seen yet tells me how to skip a pre-programmed function if my vehicle doesn't have it. Works, but insufficient parts for smooth install

Brian from tucson, AZ on 2/29/2016

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I only rate this a couple stars because it works as advertised. The problem (and its big) is that it's missing a key part to make install workable. It expects you to permanently alter the car's side of the steering control interface. On the back of the factory stereo (2006 Toyota Camry) there are 4 parts that interface to the car: 1) Antenna, 2) Power molex connector, 3) Speaker/data molex connector, 4) Steering wheel interface molex connector. The adapter kit for the new head unit takes care of 2 and 3, and 1 is good as is. This leaves 4, the steering wheel interface. If you look at the photo of this item, you will note one pigtail set that terminates to a plastic plug housing. This plugs into the box that is part of this item. This means the un-terminated end of the pigtail is what must interface to the car. See the problem? You have to get these raw cables to interface with what is currently a molex connector (the car's steering wheel interface connector). Since I wasn't going to deal with the $10 I could get for my radio, I broke the factory radio's connector off the motherboard, and soldered the raw cables to the connector, forming my own adapter. Otherwise I would have had to cut off the molex on the car's interface, which is a huge no-go for me. What is needed is simply another pigtail specific to the car's steering control interface connector. I could wire its wires to the wires of this item and voila!

Pros: Works as advertised

Cons: Expects you to effectively damage the car's end of the install, making resale (going back to original stereo) a bit of an issue.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Only partially functioning, so I am very disappointed. My initial gut after reading many reviews was to go with the more highly rated Axxess ASWC-1, but the sales person talked me out of that. Now I wish I had stuck with my gut feeling. After install and working with tech support they offered to swap the radio out for me, concluding that the PAC SWI-RC and my radio (a Sony model also from Crutchfield ordered together) were having some compatibility issues. I just didn't want to go through all of that, basically a gamble. So I have decided to live with it as is, but that is not a happy decision. The volume control on the steering wheel works fine. The channel up/down does NOT move thru preset channels but instead does a scan function. The mute button doesn't work at all. The mode button does different things based on the state of the radio. That's all I have on the steering wheel, just basic functions, disappointing that it couldn't get it right. The biggest disappointment is not being able to step thru the channel presets.

Pros: Volume control works.

Cons: Channel up/down does NOT move thru preset channels

2008 Honda Accord without factory Nav. The instructions are poorly written and fail to make a lot of sense. Had to call twice for clarification and it still did not work. Very vague with "connect chassis pin 6 to ground, it could be brown, yellow or orange". The factory harness has very little room for error and even using crimp splices then soldering it refused to work. Cut it out and will live without steering wheel controls, just not worth the headache and risk to the rest of the factory wiring. Money wasted.

Pros: None that I could find.

Cons: Poorly written instructions, not a lot to work with.

If you're an auto installer professional they're probably fine but for the average Joe they're not. The programming sequence is also tricky, instructions are better for this though could be better. The tricky thing is the speed at which you have to perform the programming. You have to wait for the light to come on press your steering wheel control button and hold for a second after it goes off all in a specific order. It took me a few tries but I did get it and the unit has performed excellently.

Pros: Works very well

Cons: Very bad instructions for the novice, so-so customer service for the consumer-some of the reps had a better attitude than others.

The install was a bit overwhelming at first for a first timer but everything worked as it should per the intstructions. After a few uses though it didn't hold the programming right. I'm not sure if that's the unit or my car somehow but it's something to be aware of.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

It's a good product and it does the job for me without any problems. That being said, they made the installation sound a lot easier than it actually was. The kit only comes with very basic steps, you have to download and print the more detailed steps off the PAC website. Their instructions look kind of cheap and could use more detail. On my Subaru, I had to cut and splice into the factory wiring harness in the dash (which the instructions didn't mention), which made me a little nervous to say the least. If you're not electrically inclined, I recommend having someone install this for you. It's easy to do permanent damage to your factory harness if you don't know what you're doing. But I will say that once it was in, I followed the programming instructions to a T, and it works just like they said. But be careful to read every single step thoroughly.

Pros: Works just like they say, good value, personalized instructions for your specific car

Cons: No job for a novice, instructions are a little short on detail

With their focus on great service and a great experience, I'm not sure why Crutchfield even sells this product at all. It is just shockingly complicated and confusing to install and program. I can't believe that it is thought to be the 'best' option for the average self-installer. I have training in electronics and this was still FAR too complicated to be the best option. There are much easier (and better) alternatives available in my opinion. If the installation instructions were simplified and clarified it could help I guess. But, I will NOT be using this product again on any vehicle of mine. I bought and installed a similar product (Metra Axxess ASWC-1) for a stereo I installed last year and much prefer it over this device.

Pros: It works, after FINALLY figuring out the wiring and programming

Cons: WAYYYY too complicated to wire and install!

I only bought one of these because Crutchfield's website said I would need one to keep the steering wheel controls in my 2003 Jaguar S-Type when I replaced the stock stereo with the Sony unit I was buying from them. I tried to program this and could never get it to work with my car and that head unit. Crutchfield offered to send a replacement and while I waited for it I tried to connect the steering wheel controls directly to the Sony head unit using the jack they supplied with it and sure enough it worked fine. Fortunately Crutchfield took back both of these adapters and credited me for them so all it cost me was time, but it was a couple of hours wasted. I wish their site would not have told me I needed this adapter when clearly the head unit is equipped to interpret the signal directly from my steering wheel controls without it.

Well, after struggling through what should have been a much simpler process in my opinion, I ended up with nothing. I hopped on the manufacturers website and followed their instructions to the T, but never could get past the programming stage. Spent some time on the phone with Crutchfield Tech support, and they verified that I was indeed doing everything right. They stressed that the grounds must be rock solid, so I tried a few, even made my own good ground without ever getting any feedback from programming. I am going to return this and already ordered the Axxess to replace it. They claim that their unit will auto detect, and the install looks much easier than this one. Spend the extra bucks I say,

Pros: None

Cons: Advanced wiring for some, soldering may be required. Never worked. Instructions are somewhat messy and would leave a beginner lost.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I've done all kinds of car audio installations and usually don't have much trouble figuring things out, but that was not the case with this steering wheel interface. The instructions are poorly written on PAC Audio's website, which made it difficult to install. Also, I watched a Crutchfield installation video on line, in which they recommended you install the adapter with Posi-Tap connectors. I ordered these connectors and attempted to use them, but they failed. Upon calling Crutchfield, they told me not to use the Posi-Tap connectors, which was irritating. Finally, I got the interface soldered in correctly and the SWI-RC was receiving signals from the steering wheel. However, after speaking with Crutchfield, we tested it out with a multimeter and after all this, the SWI-RC was faulty! Crutchfield sent a new SWI-RC and I was able to get the new interface to work on the first try (finally). This installation was so complicated I will never attempt to install another of these interfaces or recommend them to a friend to install, unless it is installed professionally.

Pros: Works as advertised once you finally get it installed.

Cons: Confusing instructions, poor quality

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I decided to pay the considerable extra cost for this device so that I could retain the option of the steering wheel controls I had gotten accustomed to using. Product works great, no lag as some places on the Internet would have you believe. But I knocked off at least 1 star because I have to admit, that of all the parts of my stock stereo w/ Bluetooth hands-free replacement I researched prior to making my purchasing decision, this thing was by far the hardest to understand and took me 2+ weeks of research both through the paper documentation, online instructions from the manufacturer (arguably the best but still lacking enough detail). I had to sift through hundreds of photos online of my stock stereo (which with the exact options my car has is apparently not very common). Once I found what the instructions were vaguely referencing, then and only then did I finally gain some confidence. The instructions are precise, if only lacking in some not exactly minor details. Pin numbers were exact though colors however, on the connector in the dash for the stereo side, did not match. Colors for the connector nebulously located in my "trunk" (which I don't even have) did however match the referenced pin numbers. Programming procedure was actually the easiest part of this thing, as that was documented perfectly with no ambiguity. Maybe it was just my car with the options I have, but this thing was not easy to install. Still glad I got it though.

Pros: Works, apparently super complicated to install precisely because it's compatible with nearly Everything.

Cons: Because it appears to want to be compatible with everything, it's instructions are confusing being both quite detailed while simultaneously leaving out other very important details.

I bought this along with the other adapter for my 2011 f350. I tried to retain my factory sync system and steering controls. I found the instructions to be ok. However, trying to get this thing programmed is a task in its self. It seems simple. Put it in program mode, press and hold function buttons in the order they list.....sounds easy. I had minimal succes with this, and after two days of holding buttons and counting...I have about 1/4 of the functions I should have. If your radio comes with a remote, Id skip this one.....and if not....skip it anyways and just reach over to your dash.

Pros: Cant think of one.

Cons: Touchy to program. No real good way to check the programming until you are done, and if its not right....your right back at zero. Its an all or nothing type situation.

2004 Toyota Prius
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The product broke after a few months, so I would not recommend it to anyone. One important thing you should know - it is not plug and play. You have to program it with a series of pressing and holding buttons in various patterns depending on the function and the make and model of your car and radio. I would highly recommend writing out the instructions in a simple way you can understand, because if you have to read the instructions as written while you are trying to program it, you will take too long and will have to start all over again. There are a lot of steps and a lot of codes, so trying to memorize it all would be hard. Also, there is no internal memory back up, so if you lose power to your car for any reason - for example it goes into the shop and they have to remove the car battery - then you will have to go through all the programming again. This could mean ripping your dashboard apart again to get to it, so make sure to install it in a place that is easy to get to but also won't have any of the buttons pressed. Basically, it's a really bad design.

Pros: For a short time it worked fine.

Cons: Broke after a few months. Programming it is annoying. No memory back up so if you lose power, you have to take your dashboard apart again to get to it to reprogram it again. It was a while since I installed it now, but I l\believe it required more splicing than I expected. I thought it would be plug and play and it wasn't.

Purchased this with a Pioneer AVH-X5700BHS head, to swap out the factory deck on my 2009 Ford Fusion. Instructions were not clear - had to wade through their website, only to get More conflicting information - finally reached out, and got support from Pioneer. When I finally had it all installed, it flat out wouldn't work as advertised... "Retains steering wheel control functions when replacing the factory radio; retains programming even if the vehicle's battery is disconnected" That's nice, however, it doesn't work out that way. I just moments ago got a note back from Pioneer support telling me how I need to Bypass Sync, in my car, for all of the steering wheel controls to work, which meant buying another expensive harness, despite their own website pretty clearly stating that both my vehicle and the new stereo head are fully supported. Does not work as advertised, does not get adequate support, not going to buy from pac-audio again.

Pros: It controls volume... just not much else.

Cons: In Bluetooth mode, supports volume Only - no Track+ or Track-. In Any mode, voice activation does not work at all. in Any mode, phone answer/hang up does not work at all. Go with iDataLink Maestro, instead - which is what I'll be doing next.

PAC SWC-RC Out of Control

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I've been 35 yrs in computers and electronics, a well as being, and Extra licensed HAM. My last 11 yrs were as a Senior engineering technician contracted with NASA. I give my short resume to assure that I may know how to follow instructions and figure out solutions. The SWC did not work in my 2012 Toyota Tundra Crewmax. The Install instructions were pieced together through referencing two listings, one for the vehicle's particular Molex type connector on the wiring harness and the second listing of notes pertaining to the two wires to be connected to pins on the wire harness. After looking these over several times, it was clear which wires go to which pins on the vehicle's wire harness radio connector. However, I was never sure that I was connecting to the correct connector. No photographs are provided for the vehicle. I did find conflicting information about the location of the proper wire for the steering wheel control. The other source had it located behind the glove box. I investigated that location, but had no reference to pin designations. So, I stuck with the packaged instructions. With everything wired up and indications from one red LED being correct, I proceeded with the button programming which was straight forward. There was a YouTube video that explained the programming method. The instructions were not clear enough for me to be confident that I was doing the procedure properly. Following the video I tried to enter the buttons. This did not work.

Pros: The vehicle already had it's own factory installed SWC

Cons: Lost cell phone interfacing but is the new radio's fault did not work Instructions need more photographs and more work.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I installed this, along with the Alpine CDE-153BT, in a 2005 Honda Odyssey with the base stereo (no navigation, no subwoofer). The vehicle-specific instructions are so poorly written that reviews that say the instructions are "confusing" are very charitable. The instructions are both poorly written and ambiguous. In the case of the Odyssey, the vehicle-specific note reads: "Connect the INTERFACEs white wires to Pin3 (white) of the above connector. Connect pin 11 (brown) to ground." It took 2 hours, multiple Google and YouTube searches, and finally looking at the instructions for the competing Axxess ASWC-1 to realize that the brown wire referenced in that statement was the brown wire that's part of the vehicle's wiring harness, not the brown wire in the SWI-RC.

Pros: It actually controls the stereo through the steering wheel controls and comes in an attractive cardboard box Programming survives loss of vehicle battery (at least for short durations)

Cons: Requires cutting wires on the vehicle wiring harness Confusing, poorly-written, ambiguous instructions with typos No YouTube videos from PAC showing how to program this particular model Ruined a good chunk of my Saturday

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The PAC SWI-RC was difficult to install compared to the Axxess ASWC-1, but allows for customized control programming, which is also a little complicated. To install the PAC SWI-RC it was necessary to connect the unit to the wiring under the steering column. Programming required setting up the unit for the car and stereo type, then initializing the unit, then setting each function for the steering wheel controls. In comparison the Axxess ASWC-1 only required tapping into an existing wire that was immediately behind the stereo unit. Thanks to Crutchfield for amazing technical support with this product!

Pros: Customize steering controls

Cons: Difficult to install

This remote does what it is designed to. But the directions for installation are quite vague and difficult to decipher. Also for some strange reason it does not include a harness to connect to the car's factory harness for the steering wheel controls. You are forced to cut out the car's factory harness and hardware the two together. Doesn't make much sense and really leaves too much room for error.

Pros: Works well Can be easily reprogrammed

Cons: Vague instructions hard to understand what you need to do. No harness makes no sense and makes installation more difficult and risky. Not a great product for people not comfortable with self installation.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The device works well and is very configurable to about any car. Trouble with being very adaptable is deciphering the instructions to know all of the connections needed to work for your car. If you read through the steps, you'll be missing what is laid out in the diagrams. Have to pay attention to both the diagram and the instructions to get it connected correctly. For my installation ('10 Toyota Tacoma), I needed a 560 ohm resistor to connect pin 8 from the factory steering wheel harness (referred to them as INTERFACE - deciphered that) to the modules white wire which I did according to the step by step instructions. Unit wouldn't program until I connected the factory steering wheel harness Pin 6 to ground, which was covered in the diagram. The unit can handle more options that I have steering wheel controls, figured out to use my track up button to switch between presets and track down button for changing between bands (FM1-3 or Sirius SKM1-3)

Pros: Works as described once you get past connecting it.

Cons: Connecting is was painful to figure out the unclear instructions from manufacturer and Crutchfield.

Very confusion directions. It took a while to figure out the "interface" referred to was not the "interface" between the main plug and the head unit. I suppose it wold have been too much work to write "PAC SW-1 Interface box". I was glad to figure out that my set up had the white and "black and white" wires so I didn't have to solder in the reisistor. Well, maybe that was good, maybe not. I was genuinely amazed when this thing worked as soon as I programmed it. . . ticked off when it stopped working a few days later. . . confused when suddenly it started working again. . . then ticked off again when it quit. Then very, very ticked off when I burned another half day of vacation taking the whole thing out to check the connections, the ground etc. with the result that now it won't work at all. Considering the overall weak ratings here I can only guess it was "recommended" because it's more profitable. Do yourself a favor and read the reviews of the minor components "recommended" with your headunit. This has been a real time waster for me and I'll have to try again when the wife gets back from her trip.

Pros: Worked. . . occasionally

Cons: Only worked occasionally.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Installing this thing reminded me of that classic scene from MASH where they have to defuse the bomb using Army instructions ("Cut the wires... but first, remove the fuse..."). You definitely need to look at the paper instructions, go to their web site and download your vehicle-specific instructions, and read them both completely and make sure you understand what you're supposed to be doing. In my case it actually said in one step that I would only need the black, white, and red wires, then in the next step said if I also had a black/white striped wire I would need that too (I did). When you order your stereo from Crutchfield they automatically offer the vehicle adapters for the stereo, but not for this unit. I didn't want to cut the wiring inside my car, so I ended up rigging up an adapter myself. Once actually installed, programming the unit worked great (the paper instructions were correct, the downloaded ones were obviously not) and everything worked perfectly the first time.

I replaced the OEM radio in a 1995 Taurus with an aftermarket one that had a CD player and Bluetooth technology. I was a little hesitant at first because the old radio still was in good working order and had external controls not on the steering wheel but located near the steering wheel on the dash that I still wanted to work. After speaking to technical support at Crutchfield they provided me with this simple add on. I am now happy with this purchase and my Grandson is elated! I suppose the next purchase will be a backup camera or blind spot monitoring!

Pros: Easy install only took a few minutes after the radio is removed.

Cons: A little difficult to program. I wanted to use the dash mounted button MEMORY to be used as a MUTE button since no control was listed. I had an extra unused wire labeled as MUTE that may have been used. The VOL+ and VOL- and SOURCE controls work fine however.

with the headache of install and soldering that had to be done you'd think it'd work correctly. We followed install steps to a T and had less than half the function promised. It would turn up my radio after the relearn process but would not turn it down, turn it off, change sources, or anything aside from turn the stereo up. When we tried to redo the learn process it would always take the first step but then for step two it wasn't even acting as if I was pressing the down volume button it would just flash and skip that step.

The reason i waited so long to change out my unit, was i didn't want to loose my steering wheel controls. This is a good product and well worth the money. Make sure you fully read the instructions and you must know what your doing. As long as you follow the instruction on the website you should be fine.

Pros: works great and can be programmed to operate different functions then the factory functions.

Cons: took a couple of times to get the program pattern down and insulation will differ depending on vehicle

Everything was good till I started wiring it. Wrong color wires, wrong pin #s the wiring is all wrong. None of my controls work. I've been doing stereo installs for 20 years an this had me upset.

Pros: Size price concept

Cons: Wiring chart. Needs to be updated or at least checked.

Too complicated.

Pros:

Cons: Too complicated . Should of bought the more expensive one that programes itself. Instructions suck. Ended up trashing it and forgetting steering controls.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I paired this with a PAC TATO for installing a Pioneer AVIC-7100NEX into my 2007 ES350. Thankfully the TATO is setup to work with the SWI-RC so the wiring is super simple as you will replace the harness from the SWI with the one from the TATO which makes everything plug into the factory harnesses so there was no cutting/slicing required into the factory harness at all. The instructions could use some improvements but otherwise the installation went smoothly as I was able to retain all the factory steering wheel controls including phone operations. Overall I'm really pleased with the operation. I've used Peripheral/PAC products for years and have not had any issues so far.

Pros: Simply installation if paired with another PAC adapter. Was able to retain all steering wheel controls.

Cons: Not the greatest instructions.

Was easy to figure out how to wire and make it work but the programming directions are wrong. Most of the functions for the car don't do anything and will have to be frigged to make the few that I can get to work.

Pros: Easy wiring

Cons: Incorrect programming guide

Works good, difficult installation

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Had my doubts, but after going through the programming a couple of times changing various options it's doing everything we can ask of it. I even programmed a button to answer the Bluetooth phone calls. We're using it with a Kenwood head unit.

Pros: Almost like it's not there (Which is want you want with a device like this). Allowed me to map factory buttons to different features. Very small, able to hide behind the dash easily.

Cons: Programming take a few tries, make note what you want the buttons to do and be prepared. If you make a mistake, start over. It took me 4-5 tries to get the exact functions I wanted mapped to the exact buttons I wanted. It's not difficult, but does take some effort - maybe 30 minutes. Program, test, reprogram.

Installed it on a Toyota Rav4 to maintain usage of the steering wheel controls. No matter how many times I did it, it did not program the correct buttons. The directions are not very clear.

Pros: Works on some of the controls

Cons: not easy to program. Pay real close attention and read the directions several times

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Im new to installing a steering wheel control adapter, but i don't think it should be this hard. Although the process is methodically complicated I didn't expect to stump both the experts at Crutchfield and PAC with abnormal feedback from the adapter. With several days of working with multiple tech advisors and a background in building projects with arduino and raspberry pie I did not expect this adapter to fall through the cracks and not be capable of adapting to a 2015 pioneer stereo purchased with the latest PAC adapter.

Pros: It is a thing you can purchase.

Cons: Functionally the adapter did not work. Specifically track up and down. The buttons on the steering wheel could be programed through the controller. the controller responded abnormally to tech support at Crutchfield and PAC who could not diagnose any errors. Several days and many hours later I am wishing I spent double for a better adapter or programmed one myself.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I've always had good luck with PAC products. Once they are programmed, they work flawlessly. With that said, learning the programming process can be a pain as it MUST be done in EXACTLY the right steps. Additionally, to ensure success, I advise programming with the engine running (to ensure that your battery is fully charged). The PAC module works by reading the voltage signal coming from the buttons. If you program with the engine off and the battery voltage drops (which it will do over time), the PAC module will get incorrect/skewed voltage signals. This will result in it "learning" the wrong commands and it won't work right when you start the engine (battery is full).

Pros
