Our take on the Rockford Fosgate P3D4-12

Standout performance

Rockford Fosgate showcases their fanatical commitment to sonic excellence in the Punch Series of speakers, amps, and subs. If you like to listen to potent, powerful music — and feel it too — Punch components will give you impressive sound that'll stand out in a crowd.

Exploded view

Designed for deeper, louder bass

Rockford Fosgate designed the P3D4-12 12" subwoofer to stay strong even when the bass gets hot. This Punch P3 sub features a rigid anodized aluminum cone that holds its shape through heavy play, while staying light and responsive. Rockford Fosgate uses a new technique to attach the oversized rubber surround to the cone that increases available cone area up to 25%, so this sub can push more air for even bigger bass.

Heat-sink cone

The aluminum cone acts as a giant heat sink, directing heat away from the copper-clad aluminum voice coils. Special venting keeps the voice coils cool, so you get incredibly consistent bass performance over time. This P3 sub features an extended pole piece and bumped backplate that leaves more room for heavy excursion, so it'll hit deeper lows without "bottoming out."

The dual 4-ohm voice coils allow you to wire the sub for 2-ohm impedance to get maximum power output, or for 8-ohm impedance if you're using multiple subs. The P3D4-12 sub works equally well in a sealed or ported enclosure, so you can choose the kind of bass you want for your system.

To drive this single subwoofer, we recommend a mono amplifier rated between 450 and 900 watts RMS at 2 ohms. For more information, please refer to our article on How to Match Subwoofers and Amplifiers.

I have this sub with a 500 w mono Rockford prime amp in the trunk of my 08 Impala. It hits so hard it's ridiculous and it sounds amazing. It is amazing and literally can massage your back with the right song. Oh and forget about using your mirror it just doesn't work. Absolutely love this sub and amp combo and all Rockford products.

Pros: Kicks butt, hits as low as you want and is excellent for all kinds of music

Cons: None..

Awesome Subwoofer

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great quality subwoofer. Put this sub in a proper enclosure and it'll blow you away. I have it in a ported enclosure with approximately 1.8 cubic feet and it sounds phenomenal. Would higher recommend!

Pros: Loud, can play nice low frequencies in a proper box, amazing sound quality.

Cons: The only con I have is that the sub was too big for any universal grille, so I had to buy the official Rockford grille for it which is more pricey than typical grilles.

I have 2 of these on a my 2015 Chevy Impala...and I must say...they hit hard. They shake my rearview mirror until it faces downward when I crank it up. I recommend these to anyone who want great sounding subs that are very accurate..and get loud. I've bought many subs from Crutchfield....and I've become a huge fan of Rockford Fosgate. I don't order any electronics from anyone but Crutchfield. Thanks guys!

Pros: Great subs with heavy bass....worth every dime....

Cons: None

Great bass!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Overall a great speaker. Put this in a 2010 camaro. Went with one subwoofer for space purposes. Paired with a 1.27cuft sealed Sound Ordnance box and this one speaker sounds like a few subwoofers. Only had it installed a few day but have the bass turned way down. Pumps so much it rattles everything and drowns out the factory speakers. I guess eventually new highs will be needed if you really want to turn up the bass. Overall a great subwoofer for serious bass.

Pros: Great bass, ascetically pleasing and inexpensive.

Cons: None

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The product is great, the bass us solid and deep. I only had the subwoofers a few days so I'll have to break them with a 10 to 20 hours of play to get the full effect of the subs. But so far so good. I would definitely recommend the P3D4 12" Subs. Only gave a 4 star because I've only had them for about a week.

Pros: Clean bass

Cons: Have to slowly break the subs in with several hours of play before getting full potential

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

When I look for a sub, I look for a good sound quality sub. I listen to classic rock and traditional country so I don't need a big boomy truck rattiling sub. This sub could be that if you wanted though. I got 2 12in subs in my extended can truck and these things sound amazing. I got the gain on my Rockford Fosgate Power t100-1 only at a quarter. And these things still pound! They don't miss a note and go great with my system. From ACDC to mama tried these things are awesome! Too quality subs at an affordable price.

Pros: Sound quality Price Looks great

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The quality of this woofer is very nice, can handle a lot or power, and fit it small boxes. The bass is very clean and has the boom wound vs the thump which I didn't like in lower quality woofers. Very impressed as I went through 3 woofer thinking I couldn't get a big box bass sound. I'm extremely happy with my purchase and the EXPERTISE of Crutchfield guiding me through this selection.

Pros: Sound, Quality, Ease of installation, instruction on how to use as 2 or 4 ohms.

Cons: None

Best Subs you can get for the price.

I have one of these punch series p3 subs in a sealed enclosure at 1.25 cubic feet. On a cx 600.1 kicker app wired at 2 ohms, and love it this sub just hits so hard and begs for more.

Pros: Loud, solid, great price (when I got it), and just beautiful

Cons: I think the aluminum come makes a distinct noise when your not level with it

Rene from Las Vegas, NV on 8/15/2016

I've got 2 of these wired in a 1 ohm set up being pushed with the RF P1000x1bd in a sealed obcon box facing forward in my 2015 Sonata. I drop the rear seats and let them blast and rattle me away. I'll never use anything but Rockford for my subs or amps they compliment each other great.

Pros: Sound and quality is great for the price and size of subs, can definitely handle the power I'm throwing at them, and easy to set up.

Cons: I want more of them now for my other rigs. Might sound even better in a slightly bigger vented box.

Great sub for both loudness and SQ!

BLUEX Electronics from Newtown, CT on 8/7/2016

Great sub at a pretty good price. I am running it in a sealed box, it hits very low with really good SQ. It is being run with a 500W true RMS (1200W peak) mono power amp (500W into a 2 ohm load at less then 0.1% THD) in a 1.7 cubic foot enclosure.

Pros: Great sound quality Decently loud Metal cone - great for low bass Powerful Great build quality - never bottomed it out once! Frequency response is great!

Cons: None that I can see!

I have these subs in a sealed down firing box wired at 1 ohm to a 1500 watt amp and I listen to mostly rock and they sound great. They really rumble and when I listen to rap these things shake my windshield wipers on my windshield. Great quality for the price and hit super hard

Pros: Great price. Hits really good

Cons: Sound quality could be alittle better

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased this to round out my system. It complements 2 sets of JL Audio C2-650, the sub is powered by a Rockford Fosgate Punch P1000X1bd and sounds awesome. I have this mounted in a sealed hits a good range of frequencies. It's hits hard and still has a little boom to it. *mind you its only been hooked up for 2 days and still needs some time to break in fully - the bass response will only get better over time. Its a very impressive sub both to listen to and to look at.

Pros: Great product at a great price and it looks good

Cons: someone is gonna wanna steal this when they hear me rollin around town

Awesome sub

Sheldon from NYC on 3/9/2016

I bought these subs for a sealed box, and I must say I was impressed. They were able to hit the lows with power and percision without bottoming out. I have use these same subs in 3 different cars all with solid trunks and I din't get the bass that drowns out the rest of the sound. What I was able to produce was solid bass that blended with the rest of the music of every genre. I could shake the block or vibrate the blood in your veins these subs can do it just right. I recommend a RF amp for them, however they work "ok" with any am that can drop a 2ohm stable and push. I would sooner get rid of the car than these subs!!!!

Pros: Hard hitting Bass, dynamic, reliable!

Cons: Shakes car apart

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Wow. Big heavy magnet , basket feels strong , tight surround, fantastick bannana plugs. Sound? Well u need at least 500 watts minimum and to get best sound for rap, rock, country etc... You need to buy Sound ordance 1.27 sealed box. The .93 sounds good but the sub pounds deep in the bigger box. I would say the sub isnt loud persay, but it like an earthquake in your vehicle

Pros: Build, easy conectivity, slams in right box, comes with flexable installation trim ring and rockford decal

Cons: Not really a con. Needs power

Mece from Orlando, fl on 8/12/2015

I'm running this single sub in a late model f150 s.crew at first off of a Jl jx 500/1. It hit pretty nice but I wanted more, I originally bought this sub as a filler as I blew my 12w3 so I installed the P3 till I could purchase a 12w7. I upgraded to the jl jx 1000/1 this sub defiantly woke up. It's in a 3/4 birch 1.75cuft ported box @35hz I was a lot closer to what I was looking for. The aluminum cone has a distinct sound that I have to say I'm not a fan of, it's not at all bad, just not for me. Also the accuracy is not even close to that of JL, but With the right enclosure & wattage you could really get this thing to slam. I got the w7 so I'll be happy to get rid of this thing. Not at all a bad sub but if you're particular abt your bass give them a listen before you commit.

Pros: Slams Price

Cons: Odd shaped mounting ring Couldn't use trim ring with box design Accuracy could be better Sound from aluminum cone

I love these subs, I've got two of them in the back of an explorer. Box is tuned to 34hz, and feeding them with a hifonics 1700rms amp at 1ohm. They take every bit of power i give to them. They can get really loud, i've had my steering wheel flex from these. Can't say enough good things about Rockford Fosgate, and these subs.

Got the P3 to fit in an MTX ThunderForm enclosure for my new Mustang because the MTX sub at the same power level was too deep for the enclosure. The sound is great and it looks awesome. Matched with an Alpine PDX-V9. They seem a good pair.

Pros: - Great seat thumping bass.

Cons: None so far

Raul from Lemoore, CA on 10/3/2012

Was an extreme upgrade from two JL Audios 8's, these subwoofers (have two inside a chevy tahoe) and boy do they bump. I have only one rockford fosgate p1000 amp backing these babies up but will soon have another to wire each sub to its own amp. The price is also perfect trust me invest in something that wil last you will not regret these monsters!

two is better than one

derek from Glenwood iowa on 6/3/2012

This subwoofer is amazing! I've owned and been using it for 6 months now and it still never ceases to amaze me. It has superior sound quality and looks that could kill.

Pros: Drop dead hot build design and performs up to the rockford name.

Cons: It is kind of pricey but you get what you pay for. Atleast that's what I've learned with other brands

OG from richmond va on 5/7/2012

the title is self explanatory...their competitors may have a little better sound quality but make up for it in power can "abuse" these woofers and they keep asking for more...I have 1000 watts on one p3 12 in a sealed box!!! Also their power rating is more accurate than others mainly type-r and w6v2. If your more of a bass head but still want sound quality this woofer is the best medium of both worlds.

Pros: power handling (durability)-best subwoofer for a person looking for SQ and SPL

Cons: some woofers have better SQ but cant handle SPL

Does not even compare to the old P3

rft1d412 from Iowa on 9/25/2011

We received one of these at work recently and put it in the sound room. These things are absolute beasts compared to the old P3. The metal cone and rubber surround are HUGE upgrades and the extra 100wrms power handling also helps tremendously. Powered by a RF T1500 and mounted in the Rockford Fosgate pre-loaded slot-port enlosure, this thing is insane. It out-performs two previous model P2-12's in a dual slot-port box by quite a margin. The metal cone won't crack and break like the old plastic cones, and gives it a very solid, deep, hard hitting sound. The rubber surround means it will last and is less prone to puncture wounds like the foam surrounds on the old P3. Overall a very good buy and a very solid subwoofer, and definitely a huge iimprovement over the old P3.

Hands-on research

Product Research

Enclosure Compatibility

Overview: The Rockford Fosgate Punch P3D4-12 is a 12-inch subwoofer with dual 4Ω voice coils. The sub features a hybrid StampCast basket, quick-release compression terminals, anodized aluminum cone, and Santoprene surround. An anodized aluminum voice coil former and spider venting help keep the subwoofer cool.

Dual 4Ω Voice Coils: The dual 4Ω voice coils offer wiring flexibility; when wired in parallel the woofer presents a 2Ω load, when wired in series the woofer presents an 8Ω load.

Compression Terminals: The P3D4-12 features spring post terminals which accommodate speaker wire up to 10 gauge.

CEA-2031 Compliant: Power handling on the P3D4-12 subwoofer conforms to CEA-2031 industry standards. This means the subwoofer has the capacity to handle power under continuous demand, not instantaneous power handling, that over time, can damage voice coils.

FlexFit Basket: The Flex Fit frame utilizes slots (where possible) instead of single screw sized holes; allowing slight adjustment of the speaker when mounted.

Trim Ring: To improve the cosmetic look, a decorative trim ring is included that mounts over the flange of the woofer. When using the cast aluminum trim ring the woofer is first mounted with four screws, then the ring is placed on top of the woofer, aligning the final four holes of the woofer with ring. The other four screws are used for these holes to mount the ring and woofer to the enclosure. Without the trim ring the mounting height of the woofer is just under 7/8 of an inch, with the trim ring it's approximately 1-1/16 inches. The diameter of the trim ring is 13-5/16 inches.

Enclosure Compatibility

Sealed Box: Rockford recommends a sealed enclosure with an optimum internal volume of 1.02 cubic feet (from 0.75 to 1.25 cubic feet is acceptable). Sealed enclosures provide the most control over a woofer, will handle a lot of power, and provide accurate sonic reproduction, making them suitable to all types of music.

Ported Box: Rockford recommends a ported enclosure with an internal volume of 1.79 cubic feet using one 4" diameter x 10" long port; this yields a tuning frequency of 40 Hz. Ported (or vented) enclosures typically provide better overall efficiency than sealed so they are suitable for use with smaller amplifiers, giving you more bass output from less power. However, this efficiency comes at the expense of very low frequency output (below 33 Hz).

I would recommend the Kicker CX1200.1. I currently have this for two P3D4-12's and it matches their RMS exactly, and if you only have one sub you can wire it to 4 ohms instead of 2 and it will still be perfect for that one sub, and in the future if you get a second you can wire them both to 2 ohms and it will be perfect. Not sure if I understand your question. Sound quality will be good however I don't think it's weatherproof. I am more than pleased with the P3D4 12. I have 4 of them and they been pounding for a year now. If you power it correctly along with quality enclosure I think you too will be happy. As for UV and rain exposure we both can assume it would not be good.. And since you are putting it in Jeep an all acrylic enclosure would be mint.. Michael [ MICHAEL  Jul 08, 2016 ]

Clay in most cases with that amount of wattage you will not need an extra battery. Once you have finished your install, check the voltage. With a good alternator and battery it should be just fine. [ MICHAEL  Sep 11, 2015 ]

Ported boxes usually give off more fluttering bass sound versus a sealed box is a more direct hit. [ DOUG P  Sep 02, 2014 ]

I would say run the biggest you can on both subs and amp. Should be around 10-12 gauge on subs and 4 gauge minimum on amp [ nic  May 10, 2014 ]
It depends on the amp size and specifications of the speaker. I would refer to the manufacturer for this question. Call up Rockford Fosgate and tell them what you have. If properly wired it sounds great. Noah [ NOAH  May 10, 2014 ]
Thanks for your question. For information on comparing two or more models I would recommend reaching out to an Advisor by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat. They will be able to help determine the differences and help you make the best choice for your system and your budget. [ Greg  May 05, 2014 ]  Staff
That amp would be a good match for 2 of these subs, and will supply an impressive amount of bass. [ Jeff  Dec 26, 2013 ]  Staff
Thanks for your question. It looks like the amp would be a good match for the main speakers, but not such a great match for the subwoofer.
