Our take on the Rockford Fosgate Punch P250.2

Rockford Fosgate keeps making a good thing better with Punch amps — and you'll find one for every type of car audio system, from mild to wild.

Rockford Fosgate keeps making a good thing better with Punch amps — and you'll find one for every type of car audio system, from mild to wild.

Rockford Fosgate continues its commitment to outstanding design with the 2-channel Punch P250.2 amplifier. Specially-designed transistors perform better than the "off-the-shelf" models most manufacturers use. Additional heatsink material keeps these critical power components running cooler, reducing distortion and increasing amp efficiency.

The P250.2 delivers the power you need to kick up the performance of full-range or component speakers, or you can run it in single-channel mode to send 250 watts to your subwoofer. The variable frequency filters adapt the amplifier to fit the job at hand, while the wired Punch Bass EQ kicks up the lows when it's time to get the car shaking.

Great amplifier for the money

Garrett from Falmouth, ME on 1/23/2009

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This amplifier is a great product from Rockford Fosgate. I love the sound that it produces and the power it puts out. I definitely recommend this amplifier to anyone that is looking for a great buy and a great product. I have it pushing 4 kicker ks680 6x8's wired in series and it works awesome. No distortion at high volumes and there a bass remote.

Best Buy Ever For My Money

scott from Vidalia, GA on 10/25/2008

I have to give it to Crutchfield on this one. This is a super product for the money. If you are looking for just a little power to juice up an 8" or 10" subwoofer, here is your amp. I hooked this amp to an 8" Punch P3. I was completely amazed. The custom birch box that I made did wonders, but I owe most of the credit to this amp. I love the remote that comes with it. I ran it under the carpet of my truck with the audio and remote cables. This puts the control at my fingers without having to adjust the gain on the amp itself or the bass control on the head unit. My current setup sounds better than some 10" or even 12" subwoofers that I have heard in the past. I am getting a good balanced punch that is not distorted.

great amp

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

first of all, Crutchfield is the best! great service, great shipping, great products! I bought this amp to power my 12" infinity reference sub, bridged. i have the amp turned almost all the way up and it sounds great, and i love having the remote to add that extra bass when i want it. amp looks great and has much better wire connector ports than ive seen on other amps.

2 Channel amplifier

Great Amp

Gil from Little Rock, AR on 9/15/2008

Great amp. Especially for the price! The only issue I had was during installation. I accidentially put a screw through the Remote Punch Bass Connection Cable. I called Fosgate and they said I could run the amp without the connection/remote. While that was true, I used a CAT5 network cable instead with no problems. I'm glad I did. My 6x9's sound MUCH better with the remote properly adjusted. It's a rock solid amp. Doesn't put off much heat either.

Rockford Fosgate Punch P250.2

bob2274 from Richmond, VA on 8/8/2008

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This amp is probably more power than I'll ever need, but I bought it because of the great price. I use it for highs and mid-range only (the adjustable crossover is fantastic), and it provides consistent power with NO distortion. I hooked it up to four 4 ohm Rockford Fosgate 2 ways, and they seem to be perfectly matched. If you need clean power for a basic system at a great price, don't pass this one up. It's built for a lot of power, but it handles everyday sytems for people like me very, very well. It also fits very well under the seat of my truck with plenty of room for ventilation.

Input and Output Notes

Removable Cover: The Rockford Fosgate Punch P250.2 amplifier features a removable terminal cover. It conceals all speaker, signal, remote, power, and ground connections, as well as the gain and crossover frequency controls for a cleaner installation.

Cast Aluminum Heatsink: The Focused Mass cast aluminum heatsink dissipates heat generated by the amplifier's circuitry. The inherent advantage of casting provides a 30% improvement of cooling over conventional extrusion heatsink designs.

INDIGO (INDexed Ideal Gain Operation): The INDIGO PWM (pulse width modulation) power supply is designed to make the most of the situation it is presented with. When battery voltage is low, you are guaranteed to get the power you paid for. When voltage increases, the amp makes even more power.

MEHSA (Maximum Efficiency Heat Sink Application): MEHSA is a Rockford Fosgate proprietary process that increases the heat transfer from the MOSFET devices to the heatsink. The multi-layer insulated metal MEHSA substrate operates with minimal thermal resistance, spreading heat both downward and outward to quickly dissipate heat from each device across the heatsink. This allows greater power output, enhanced thermal stability, and maximum reliability.

TOPAZ (Tracking Operation Pre-Amplifier Zone): TOPAZ is a circuit that eliminates noise. The TOPAZ circuit prevents ground loops by allowing the output impedance of the source unit to determine the signal ground impedance the amp sees. This virtually assures that the signal ground out of the head unit and the signal input ground of the amplifier are identical, eliminating any chance for a ground loop. The result is a 30-40dB improvement of the isolation between input ground and chassis ground.

Trans-ANA (TRANSconductance Active Nodal Amplifier): The trans-ANA is a circuit that allows the audio signal to pass through the amplifier at low voltage. The signal is directly level-shifted to the fixed high voltage rails via a pair of drive transistors. Signal linearity is assured by an active node formed by the drive transistors at ultrasonic frequencies. The result is crystal clear sound quality.

NOMAD (NOn-Multiplying Advanced Decision): NOMAD is an intelligent protection circuit that uses an analog computer to make real time decisions regarding temperature, voltage, current, and impedance. The unit is protected without limiting sound output unless needed.

DSM (Discrete Surface Mount): In the manufacturing process high speed robotics are used to place 0% tolerance resistors and large board traces providing greater reliability and efficiency.

TO-247 MOSFET: The Punch P250.2 utilizes ultra high performance MOSFET output devices, giving the amplifier more power handling capability as well as lower thermal impedance for more reliable operation, even under the harshest load conditions.

Internal Crossover: The amplifier's internal crossover is a 12dB/octave Butterworth filter switchable to high-pass, all-pass (full range), or low-pass operation. The crossover point is continuously variable from 40Hz to 400Hz.

Remote Punch Bass: The Punch Bass helps correct for acoustical deficiencies in the listening environment by helping reproduce full range sound without adding excessive boost. The Punch Bass control has a narrow band adjustment centered at 45Hz, variable from 0dB to +18dB. The supplied Punch Bass wired remote can be mounted in a variety of locations. The module's case can be removed and positioned with the mounting bracket above or below the module. Without the case the module can be flush mounted in your vehicle's dash (requires a 2" x 7/8" cutout with a maximum panel thickness of 3/8"). The wired remote is 2.294" wide, 1.293" tall and 1.509" deep (2.606" including the knob and cable connection). The included cable is 16.25' long.

RCA Pass-Thru Jacks: The pass-thru jacks provide a convenient method of daisy-chaining an additional amplifier without running an extra set of RCA cables from the front of the vehicle to the amplifier location. The pass-thru jacks are unaffected by the gain, crossover, and bass boost controls.

Power Indicator and Protection LEDs: There are three LEDs on the top of the amplifier. A blue LED illuminates when the unit is turned on. A yellow Protect LED illuminates if a short circuit or too low an impedance is detected at the speaker connections. A red Thermal LED illuminates if the amplifier overheats. The amplifier will automatically shut down if either the yellow or red LED indicates amplifier trouble.

Input and Output Notes

Power Connections: The power and ground terminals are nickel-plated captive c-clamp wire connectors and will accommodate up to 4-gauge wire. The remote turn-on terminal will accept wire sizes of 12- to 24-gauge. A Phillips-head or slotted screwdriver (not supplied) is required to tighten/loosen the terminals.

Speaker Connections: The nickel-plated clamp wire connectors will accept wire sizes of 8- to 18-gauge. A Phillips-head or slotted screwdriver (not supplied) is required to tighten/loosen the terminals.

Remote Punch Bass Connection: An RJ-45 jack is provided for connecting the supplied Remote Punch Bass cable.

CEA-2006 Compliance: The specifications given by Rockford Fosgate for the Punch P250.2 amplifier comply with the CEA-2006 Amplifier Power Standard from the Consumer Electronics Association. All manufacturers who comply with the standard can display the CEA-2006 logo on their product.

Performance Verification Certificate: Each amplifier comes with a Performance Verification Certificate which lists the results of a 10-point performance inspection as well as a measurement of the actual power output of that amp.

Extended Warranty: A one year warranty extension, for a total of two years, is provided by Rockford Fosgate when this amp is wired using a qualifying Rockford Fosgate amplifier wiring kit. Qualifying wiring kits include RFK8, RFK8i, RFK4, and RFK4i.
