Clean power, extensive controls
Rockford Fosgate designed this Prime amp to deliver Power Output Without Excessive Regulation (POWER), which means it'll respond quickly to the peak demands that you may throw at your system. Low-pass and subsonic filters, along with Rockford Fosgate's famous Punch bass boost, let you tune your subs for maximum performance, so your driver's seat will become your favorite place to pick up the beat. And, speaking of the driver's seat, you can hook up an optional wired remote knob to get fingertip control over this amp's bass impact.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Rockford Fosgate has lived up to expectations again. Great amp that is well worth the cost. I'm pushing 4 10" subwoofers with this amp and 4 10" subwoofers with another brand (DB Drive - Speed series). To match all my subs the other brand is turned as high as it can go without clipping and the Rockford Fosgate is only at about half power - proving again that Rockford is a much better amp over their competitors.

Pros: Very strong and easy to set up

Cons: None

Rockford Solid Amplifier

Albert from Conway, AR on 4/8/2017

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The Rockford Fosgate R1200-1D is an excellent amplifier. Using it to power 2 Rockford Fosgate P2D2-12 subs (800 watts RMS with a 2 ohm load configuration) and receiving the signal from an AudioControl LC2iB line output converter. The amplifier has a gain that goes up to 11; I have it set to about 4.5. With the line output converter set correctly and the volume at the stereo set to about 80% of maximum, the subs can be felt a block away without any distortion. The amp runs cool and only warms up when I have it turned up to generate thunder-like bass. With the low-pass filter and the subsonic filter set correctly I am able to get excellent bass sound that is clean and distortion free. Power and speaker cable connections are secure and will definitely not come loose. Be sure to use good cables, I went with the Rockford Fosgate RFK4X cable kit. I would definitely not go any smaller than the Rockford Fosgate R1200-1D. In my humble opinion, you are better off saving your money to get a bigger amp like this one - you will have plenty of extra power and you will not be disappointed. Rock on!

Pros: Plenty of extra power, no distortion, runs cool.

Cons: The Punch Level Control module blue LED light is very bright, I had to partially cover it with electrical tape.

Top of the line amp

Armando from Denver, CO on 2/9/2017

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I got the RF R1200-1D as part of the awesome Crutchfield RF bass package and boy am I pleased! This thing is a beast. I also have the RF 4 channel 600 watt amp and I think this is the perfect combo. I have this wired at 1 ohm to two RF 12" P2's with a Sound ordnance bass bunker sealed box and it pounds. It seems like at the stop light, by the looks of people two cars ahead I can be heard at least that length. That withstanding, the prime line is supposed to be an "entry level" series of RF products however, I don't think that any "entry level" term can be applied to Rockford Fosgate. I'm a travelling nurse so I drive a lot, sometimes I'm out driving intermittently for 8 hours and this thing has yet to show any signs of heat or failure. I expected RF to deliver but man did they surpass my expectations, once again. This amp is definitely the best value out there.

Pros: Top of the line quality for value price, Rockford Fosgate

DO NOT BUY THIS UNLESS YOU WANT TO BE BLOWN AWAY! Totally exceeds my expectations. The best thing about this purchase... I didn't have to think about it! Crutchfield REP recommended it based on my speaker choice. He nailed it. They always do. Thanks again CRUTCHFIELD.

Pros: Power. All the power you need for two needy 12" Rockford Fosgate 12's

Cons: Not really a con, but I wish they came with speaker grills.

True Power is a Thing of Beauty

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

She's a Beast that seems to have power for days. It pushes my twin Kicker Comp RT's hard. Super easy to tune to your preferred bass response. I am very pleased so far. I have it mounted between the subs behind the rear seat of my Tacoma double cab and it runs very cool. I've taken a 1.5 hour trip running it pretty hard the whole time and was really surprised when I got out how cool it was. Great Buy.

Pros: Price Power Controls and Crossover

Cons: Non So Far

Awesome amp!

Jay from Boston, MA on 1/7/2016

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Awesome amp. The birth certificate shows my amp making 1300 watts rms; how cool is that! 100 watts rms extra for free. I have this amp hooked up using 4 gauge wiring to a 12 inch subwoofer in a ported box; it gets incredibly loud with plenty more left. There are other cheaper amps that claim similar output to this one; don't believe it for a second; they are cheaper for a reason. I am guilty of purchasing those amps. Never again. Thanks again Crutchfield; your customer service, technical support, and return policies are the envy of other Internet sellers.

Pros: Great amp for its price. Super powerful Compact sizing Easy to use

Cons: Wished I would have purchased it before.

Total Powerhouse

Tyler from Ohio on 9/2/2014

The amp, even at 2 ohms, is rocking the heck out of my two 12" P3's. Afraid to see it at 1ohm! Great buy.

Pros: Powerhouse, Great SQ, Highly Efficient

Cons: Gets fairly warm quickly

Rockford Fosgate R1200-1D

DirkNBer from Meridian, MS on 7/26/2013

Upon deciding I was going to install a complete RF system, the first factor was above all else, clear, crisp sound. I have this R1200-1D pushing 2 Rockford Fosgate P3 12" subs. Having the right equipment, such as the Rockford Fosgate 3Sixty.3 signal Processor with the R1200-1D turns this meek little entry-level amp into a purebred BEAST! As I mentioned prior, great sound quality is a MUST. The R1200-1D has managed to deliver the BEST quality sound out of my system to date. I am 44 yrs young, and have been installing high-end systems for over 20 years. For the money, the R1200-1D cannot be beat!

Pros: small footprint, but huge sound.

Cons: No internal fuses. Design leaves something to be desired in the fact that you can see all wires leading in & out of unit. Personally, I feel they could've put more thought into designing a plate to conceal wires.

jeff j from wa on 5/22/2013

great sub, clear and delivers way more than enough power to my 10 inch JL w6.WAY loud and sounds great!

Pros: somewhat compact, doesn't overheat on me, clear sound, tons of power

Cons: none.

Rockford R1200-1D

gunsdebock from Norfolk, Va on 8/26/2012

Bought this amp to power a Kicker CVT-10 Shallow mount sub in my F-150 Supercrew and it does an outstanding job. Powerfull Amp yet very clear sound. Makes my one 10 hit so hard it sound like two 10's. Well worth the money.

Pros: Size, very small yet a ton of power. Doesn't get very warm when pushing it hard.

Overall Great

Rob from macomb, Mi on 7/15/2012

I just bought this amp a few days ago and so far i've enjoyed it. With this amp and a 12' alpine it seems to hit very hard but at the same time very clear and consistent

Pros: Great control of the subs and sounds great

Cons: No fuse in the actual amp itself. I always love to have a fuse at the amp and 2 in the middle

Product Research

Overview: The Rockford Fosgate Prime R1200-1D is a mono Class D amplifier. It is optimized to power subwoofers, and is 1-ohm stable. The Class D design is very efficient with a cast aluminum heatsink to keep it in a small footprint. The amplifier has 85% average efficiency at 4-ohms or 2-ohms, and 80% at 1-ohm.

CEA 2006 Compliant: The R1200-1D's power ratings are measured according to the strict standards dictated by the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA). These standards allow you to accurately compare the rated power output of all CEA 2006-compliant amplifiers, even different brands. Manufacturers who adhere to the standards can display the CEA 2006 logo on their products and packaging. The RMS power output is as follows (measured with a 14.4 volt input, <1% THD+N, 20 Hz-250 Hz):

  • 4-Ohm: 400 watts x 1
  • 2-Ohm: 800 watts x 1
  • 1-Ohm: 1200 watts x 1

LED Indicator: The amplifier is equipped with a top-mounted LED indicator which illuminates blue when the unit is turned on. The LED illuminates red when a protection circuit engages (short circuit or too low an impedance is detected at the speaker connections). The amplifier automatically turns off if this occurs.

Mounting: The amplifier can be mounted vertically, horizontally, or inverted using the supplied mounting screws; horizontal mounting (right side up) will provide the best cooling.

Amp Controls: The R1200-1D has the following top-mounted controls:

  • Gain Control: a rotary gain control that can be adjusted from 1 to 11
  • Low Pass Filter: a 12 dB/octave Butterworth low pass filter with a crossover point variable from 50 Hz to 250 Hz
  • Infrasonic Filter: a variable 15-40Hz, 12 dB/octave infrasonic filter designed to prevent frequencies below the audio range from being applied to the subwoofer
  • Punch EQ: a rotary bass boost control, centered at 45 Hz, from 0 dB to +18 dB

Remote Punch Level Control: The amplifier includes a wired Remote Punch Level Control, which is linked to the gain control of the amplifier. The module allows you to remotely control the output level of the amplifier from the dash or center console of your vehicle. The Remote Punch Level Control features a rotary dial, and comes with mounting hardware and a 16.5' connector cable.

Terminals: The amplifier features heavy duty, nickel-plated set-screw terminals. The set screws can be tightened or loosened with the supplied 3mm Allen wrench. The terminals include:

  • Power/Ground: will accommodate up to 4-gauge wire
  • Remote Turn-On: will accommodate up to 8-gauge wire
  • Speaker Terminals: will accommodate up to 8-gauge wire. Two Positive (+) and Negative (-) terminals are provided for installation flexibility. Both terminals are wired in parallel internally.

Fuses: The amplifier does not have on-board fuses. A 100A fuse should be placed on the power wire within 18" of the battery.

RCA Input Jack: The RCA input jacks are nickel-plated to resist signal degradation caused by corrosion.

RCA Pass-Thru Jacks: The nickel-plated RCA pass-thru jack provides a convenient source for daisy-chaining an additional amplifier without running an extra set of RCA cables from the front of the vehicle to the amplifier location.

Customer Q&A

Crutchfield asked
Why did you buy this?

Read a lot of reviews, and chose this amp due to its amount of power for its size and price. Will use to power 2 x kicker CVT 10 4ohm subs wired at 2 ohm in a sealed box under rear seat in Dodge Ram. Subs are rated 400w RMS per sub, and amp delivers 800w RMS. Should be a good match [ Michael  Nov 08, 2017 ]

For best sound quality, we recommend getting an amp that doesn't output any more that 150% of the subwoofer's top RMS watts that it can handle. That being said, adjusting the gain as Austin mentioned will allow you to use this amp with your subwoofers because when this amp is turned down, it will not output enough power to blow your subwoofers. Feel free to call an advisor on 1-800-324-9695 for a personal recommendation on an amp. My Bio: [ Paul  Nov 13, 2017 ]  Staff

You should be good [ Carson  Nov 10, 2017 ]
If you wire the 2 at 1ohm it will push 600 to each [ Tyler  Sep 10, 2017 ]
It will push 600rms to each subwoofer if you have it hooked up to two subwoofers. [ Marcus Chase  Sep 09, 2017 ]
It's a split 6 and 6. Unless they are single voice coil in series parrallel [ CURTIS  Sep 08, 2017 ]
It is true 1200 watts. Clean watts. I've tested it It was running 4x 10" with no heating issue. [ CURTIS  Jun 21, 2017 ]
I used two AGM batteries (65Ah each). I installed the 22nd one in the rear of the car. [ Justin  Aug 16, 2016 ]
I have two of these amps running 8 subs. The infrasonic should be turned all the way down to avoid damage for one. And I have an oscope. Seven on the gains is way above distoirtion. I have done multiple tests and around three and a half on the gain is where clean signal to the subs starts to go all bad. Also matched batteries is where you would want to go when you get the cash. The second battery helps to level out the draw and allows the smaller altinator to run at a more level rate than jumping up and not able to meet the demands. First lower the the gains and it should help with the lighting. [ CURTIS  Aug 15, 2016 ]
i would go with 2 kickers or 2 Rockford fosgate p2 also make sure the subs can handle the rms cause they burn out really fast if they are getting to much power [ Dustin  Feb 08, 2016 ]
Wired down to 1ohm? Sounds like you sent too much power to your sub. What was the sub RMS rating? [ William  Feb 06, 2016 ]
well i run the 1ohm fosgate sub 12'' 600w rms the trick is you have to set the gain properly if you don't it will fry it.. lets say your sub took 600w rms ,and that equated to 30v which it doesn't, after a bunch of math then you have to set your gain on your amp playing a 50 hrz tone just before clipping your max volume, then adj your gain to 30 volts with a volt meter, or you risk burning all subs up! due to over voltage their are some youtube videos you can find on setting the gain this way . im not worried about it, i don't run mine that hard good luck [ justin  Feb 06, 2016 ]
I matched my R1200-1D with 2 fockford P2D4-12's. I also have them wired to 1 ohm. Only have had them for a little over a month and the BEAT! U need to match your amps RMS wattage to ur subs. Your amp has 1200 watts RMS at 1 ohm so your subs should have no less than 800 watts RMS together. An amp having a little extra power is a good thing. If u are running just 1 sub then it should have at least 800 watts RMS by itself. Also turn down your gain some. I wouldn't recommend having it over 3 or 4. [ Spencer  Feb 05, 2016 ]
I have 2 rockford fosgate p2 wired at 1 ohm gain set around 7 an it sounds amazing couldnt ask for a better setup [ Ryan  Feb 05, 2016 ]
I forwarded your question to an Advisor and they responded with the following: The R1200-1 is a single channel amp. With a 4-ohm DVC subwoofer you would be getting 800 watts RMS (you would wire the voice coils in parallel for a 2-ohm load). While this will work, it's not an ideal match for the sub you described. I forwarded your question to an Advisor and they responded with the following: If your subs are 1000 watts RMS apiece that amplifier isn't enough power. You would only get 400 watts RMS per sub when presenting the amplifier with a 2-ohm load.
