Excellent factory replacement

Whether you're building your first system or replacing some burned-out factory speakers, Rockford Fosgate's Prime Series R165X3 6-3/4" speakers offer clean, powerful performance that'll keep you and your friends rockin' as you drive. Plus, Prime speakers are a great way to get Rockford Fosgate sound quality without destroying your bank account.

Rockford Fosgate Prime R165X3 speaker

The R165X3 adds a piezo supertweeter for extra detail.

Better components give you more detail

Each 6-3/4" speaker sports a stiff polypropylene woofer cone that delivers strong drums and bass, along with clean reproduction of the midrange frequencies. The silk dome tweeter and piezo supertweeter add the excitement of strong high-frequency response to your music without a trace of harshness. The built-in crossover network divides the frequencies going to each driver, so all your music plays faithfully. Grilles are included.

Note: Rockford Fosgate describes this model as a 6-1/2" speaker. Most manufacturers designate this same frame size as a 6-3/4" speaker. For simplicity's sake, we list it as a 6-3/4" speaker.

These were a nice upgrade for my Scion Tc, and with the FREE Crutchfield support and FREE accessories installation was ridiculously easy!

great door 3 way. replacing the stock speaker 1 way that came with the 2014 Malibu. Granted, only have the stock My Link radio without the pioneer upgrade but you can notice the difference right away. The highs and mids are more pronounced but the bass is still lacking....it's a little better with the new speakers. I am going to install a 5 channel amp to push these things a little bit and maybe put in some 6x9 subs in the cargo shelf. I think that will do the trick.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Bought two pairs of these as factory replacements for my Pontiac Vibe. I don't see how those who say these don't have good bass can say so honestly. No, they don't move air like a sub, but they actually sound pretty darn accurate, and they DO reproduce bass, just don't expect the ground outside your car to be shaking. These sound VERY good for the price, way better than I expected. Would buy again without hesitation. Crutchfield threw in the required Metra adapter rings for my car, and the wire adapter plugs, and the install went without a hitch, except that the screws that come with these speakers are longer by almost half an inch than the depth of the mounting ring for my car, so I had to round up 16 screws of the appropriate length to mount the speakers in the rings. The mounting rings made installing a breeze, though, and once I rounded up the required screws, I had them installed in less than an hour... that's ALL 4 speakers, one in each door. The installation instructions were SPOT on. These speakers replaced front component speakers that come from the factory in my Vibe... these actually sound a LOT better than the el-cheapo, plastic-frame factory speakers, even though the factory speakers were a woofer in the doors and a tweeter in the sail panel... if you're looking to vastly improve upon factory speakers, look no further than these. First time I have ever had Rockford speakers, but I'm very happy with them.

The speakers sound great - I didn't really realize how poor my Tacoma factory speakers were until I replaced all four doors with these bad boys. The change is unreal. These were easy to install and very affordable. If you are on the fence on whether or not but these, make the move - you won't regret it!

Just installed a pair of Rockford Fosgate Prime R165X3 speakers in the rear doors of my 2011 GMC Canyon extended cab 2wd WT. Awesome sound!!! These speakers are miles ahead of the stock Delcos. Since funds are tight... I only replaced the back speakers. Next time a get some $$$, I'll spring for front speakers. Second, I have been purchasing car audio from Crutchfield since 1990, Always great prices with all mounting hardware and instructions!!

Pros: Sound really nice!! Quick and easy install.

Cons: Now I will have to buy front speakers!!! These speakers make the stock Delcos sound really bad.

I put 4 of these in my 2012 Ford Focus SE without the Sony system in it and they were definitely an upgrade. They definitely sound better in warm weather though. I live in Minnesota so when I gets cold they don't sound very good but I'm pretty impressed with how much better they sound when it gets warm.

Pros: Good sound

Cons: Definitely not cold weather speakers.

Sounds much better than factory stereo on my Toyota Sienna 2011. However I was hoping for much more boom boom. May be I need to consider more powerful speakers and better stereo too. These are good factory replacement speakers. Would characterize them as natural sounding, if a little "bright". But not harsh like titanium and metal tweeters can be. I'm not running any lows to them so cannot comment on that.

Pros: Natural sound.

Cons: A little bright. May need to run them "flat" or adjust your EQ to compensate.

2013 Subaru Forester
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I'm sorry to say there's zero difference between these and the original, terrible, Subaru Forester speakers. The reason I'm giving 2 stars vs 1 is that maybe it's the radio's fault and not the speakers. Giant waste of money.

Pros:

Cons:

Crutchfield response on November 30, 2016 Aftermarket speakers, like these Rockford Fosgates, often require more power to be effective. Factory radios often don't have the power output to do aftermarket speakers justice. When distortion occurs, many times it can be mistaken as a problem with the speakers, but it can actually be a weak amplifier, like the one in a factory radio, having trouble delivering the power that the speakers require. This is when upgrading the radio or adding an amp really allow speakers to sound their best.

I got these a day ahead of schedule. Everything I needed to do install. With the wiring harnesses it was a breeze. 1st door took about a half hour second door took 20min. Awesome clarity not as much as I would've liked in the way of mid bass. It's ok though bc I have 2 12s to make up for it. So very pleased and would recommend them for an upgrade from factory speakers or to add some range to your mids.

Pros: Mid tweeter and high tweeter add an awesome clarity to mids. Low impedance makes for great hook up to factory or aftermarket setup.

Cons: Not much in the way of midrange bass

Perfectly matched speakers for the aftermarket stereo I installed in my 2001 Tahoe. The sound is like night and day compared to the OEM speakers. Very little "modification" required to install in the rear doors (just foam tape to prevent possible vibration between the door cut-out and speaker frame). These speakers sound great and I highly recommend them if you are looking for great sound at a very affordable price, in your 16 year old vehicle,

Pros: Excellent product!

Cons: None

2011 Subaru Forester
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Upgraded from the OEM fronts on my 2011 Forester and they are easily the best car speakers I've ever heard. I don't need the thump from bigger speakers or subs, just some crisp highs and a speaker that can handle enough of the lows to surprise me once and a while, and these things deliver time and time again. Would recommend to anyone looking to upgrade their factory speakers. Crutchfield's install instructions for speakers leaves a little to be desired (especially in the area of how the speaker mounting brackets are positioned and used with aftermarket speakers), but I fumbled through the first door in about an hour from start to finish and the second door was done in 25 minutes. I've never done this before, so your mileage may vary.

Pros: Insanely good sound

Good quality product and crisp, clear sound.

Pros: Good quality product and crisp, clear sound.

Cons: Mounting holes on flanges are not direct fit for factory bezel. Slight modification of holes is required to get a good fit along with removal of two plastic ears on factory bezel.

I was very pleased with this set of speakers! The factory speakers quit in my 2008 Avalanche, which I later learned is common in these 2007-2014 trucks and suv's. After a lengthy conversation with Cosmo choosing a suitable replacement speaker I ordered these. I had a very easy time installing, due to the free mounting brackets and wiring harnesses. These speakers perform well and went in easily.

Pros: Sound great for a factory replacement

when i received the speakers the actual sizes is 6.5" the websites says 6 3/4" had to return product. Don't fully trust the site saying they will fit.

Pros:

Cons: didn't fit

Crutchfield response on August 23, 2016 Note: Rockford Fosgate describes this model as a 6-1/2" speaker. Most manufacturers designate this same frame size as a 6-3/4" speaker. For simplicity's sake, we list it as a 6-3/4" speaker. Car speaker sizing can be one of most confusing things we deal with on a daily basis here at Crutchfield, and it helps to think of speakers in categories instead of sizes. An example is the 6-3/4" speaker size. It's not just about the size of the speaker's frame; it also has to do with the mounting hole pattern on the speaker. Measuring a speaker will never yield the same number as its category. To help our customers, we decided to take the measurements we took from speaker locations in various vehicles and translate that into what fits from the measurements we actually take from the speakers we sell. We hoped to eliminate some of the confusion and not mislead customers. This is why we included the above note on these speakers.

Solid 3-way pair of speakers at an affordable price

Glenn D from Atlanta, GA on 7/27/2016

2016 Acura ILX
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought two pairs of these speakers to replace factory 6 1/2" speakers in the front and rear doors (4 total). The factory speakers had pretty solid low-end response, but when pushing low frequencies, would muddle the mids and highs. As I was not in the market for the most expensive speaker I could buy, and being a prior consumer of Rockford Fosgate equipment, I thought I would give these a shot, and at a $49 price point, I figured I could not go wrong. I also complemented the install with Rockford Fosgate R1TS 1" tweeters (which I adore). Couple of caveats: 1) I am not running an amp, and 2) I am still utilizing the factory deck from the ILX (which has some power). Also in the car is the factory 10" woofer in the rear deck. Upon finalizing installation (which went swimmingly with the included gear) and cranking up the sound, I immediately recognized a clarity that was not present before. Frequencies once muddled were now coming through crystal clear. They are LOUD, but I feel I may have lost a bit of low-end that the factory speaker would hit. Not much loss, and not enough to whine about it profusely, but it is slightly noticeable. The factory woofer still cranks it out, so no major loss. What is paying off in spades is the sheer quality of the sound, with no distortion. Coupled with the 1" tweeters, it's a match made in heaven, and I am glad I upgraded.

Pros: Crystal-clear mids and highs, ample lows when paired with speakers which carry the heavy share of bass, attractive speakers and speaker trim (although I did not use the grills), quality materials, easy installation. No regrets.

Cons: Do not buy if you are looking for rumbling bass. They have some "punch" and are great speakers coupled with a bass-providing pair of larger speakers, but might slightly disappoint if you are looking to shake mirrors.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

When buying a 3 way speaker, you expect to have more response from low, mid and high ranges. These speakers provide good crisp mid and high but absolutely no low end response whatsoever. Literally none. My stock speakers weren't as crisp as these, but they had much better low end response. Think carefully about what you want these speakers to accomplish. If you're pairing them with something in your vehicle that will cover the low end, like a subwoofer, then they could be a nice addition. If you are looking to replace your stock speakers without adding a subwoofer - these will thoroughly disappoint you.

Pros: Crisp Highs, shallow depth for install, good build quality

Cons: Absolutely no bass whatsoever.

I had asked a friend, who is very handy around cars, to help be install the speakers. In less than 20 minutes I had both door panel removed and uninstalled the old speakers. I received the new speakers the next day and installed them and replaced the door panel. It was no problems at all thanks to the easy to follow instructions. Thanks Crutchfield. Oh!, the speakers sound great and are a perfect match for my camper van.

Pros: Great detailed instructions made the job a breeze. Sound quality is great and a big improvement over factor installed speakers.

The Mid-Range is Overwhelming. The Highs are not Crisps! And most of all, there is NO Bass!! Sadly, my stock speakers were much better. These sound great, properly equalized. The drivers are larger than 6.5" but fit into 1/2 factory mounts.

Pros: These hit hard (for their size) without distortion even on 14watt RMS. They are only 6.5ish in size but the bass is accurate and the highs aren't harsh. Please give them a few hours or so to let them relax before making up your mind. I opened up my door panels and cut out the plasic grills to get the sound OUT. Factory speakers are a joke compaired to most anything but these look well built and sound really good. There is more surface area than typical 6.5 drivers.

Cons: I cant say much bad about them unless they only last a year. They are sturdy and accurate. I have them in a cargo work truck with tons of road noise. They do need equalizer TLC to sound best.

Bought two sets of these on special. Crutchfield "stuff for my vehicle" said they wouldn't fit in the rear doors but other sets of the same size speakers would so I gambled and ordered for both anyway. Pleasantly surprised to say they fit with absolutely no issues. Sound quality out of these guys is about a thousand times better than the stock paper cones. Bass hits moderately hard for a 6.5/6.75 inch 3-way speaker, in fact we have rattles in the door that annoy now because these are shaking stuff loose. Highs on these sound great, we have none of the "flatness" mentioned in other reviews. 45RMS/90 watts peak is a lot for the small cabin they went into and they absolutely fill it with sound. Bear in mind that speakers only pound out the sound that is sent to them, so an underpowered or poor quality deck may make these sound worse than the "matched" speakers that came stock. Paired with a Kenwood deck these sound brilliant.

Pros: Great price (on special). Loud. Crisp clear highs, decent lows/bass for their size.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I am kind of blown away as these speakers don't even come close to sounding as good as the 16 year old stock paper coned factory speakers that my truck came with. I was so underwhelmed that I pulled one of the Rockfords and replaced it w/ the factory paper cone speaker and listened to a HUGE variety of music, styles and genres, as well as songs that I had written/engineered/mastered (so I know what I am suposed to be hearing). All the while over a few hour period I was panning left to right to left... and to my amazment the Rockfords had so little low end that I could barley even hear the bass guitar at all in most songs. Also the low end that they did posses was really spiky (sharp, in really narrow frequency pockets: actually more like thin envelopes of unpleasant bass) The high end also had it's own angular coloring. Historically, I have always heard a huge improvement when replacing stock speakers. So this was really strange to me. I expected to at the very least have even a slight improvement. btw I am running an Alpine head unit. I sent the speakers back.

Pros: Brand name reminds me of Jim Rockford

Cons: They sound like angular poo. I really wanted to like them but even my 16 year old son picked the old paper coned factory speaker as sounding better in a blind test.

I give them five stars for their price range. These are low-power speakers meant for OEM replacement, running directly from the head unit (no external amplifier). They sound dramatically better than the OEM speakers they replaced. You'll need to make use of the stereo's EQ to (try) to level out the frequency response, as they have a few very hot & cold spots. After EQ, they are quite good.

Pros: They sound great running off the head unit, installation was easy. They're a great speaker for the price.

Cons: Praise is "for the price" - you're not paying a lot, so it's only fair to say they'll probably be better than the speakers the factory inflicted on you.

I used to always buy Rockford Fosgate amps and speakers long before the company had been bought out. I wasn't sure if the sound quality would good with these or not. While these speakers would fall short of the some of the systems that I have put together over the years, they are a far better speaker than the price tag would indicate. I installed these in my daily driver in the front pannels and was very impressed with the upgrade over the stock car speakers. Would highly recommed as a cheap upgrade to stock or even for a low budget starter system.

Bought these on sale for my 2011 Honda Odyssey. The install guidance from Crutchfield helped tremendously; however, the screws the RF provided were too long for the Scosche brackets provided. In order to prevent drilling holes in the metal door, I opted to cut the screws to length with my pneumatic cutoff tool. I then had to taper the ends on my bench grinder so they would go into the brackets. A note about the brackets the clips at the bottom that set into the door are delicate; I broke one off and will now need to use some 3M two-way tape to make sure it stays. My order was shorted some of the electrical connectors, so I could not install the rear doors yet. Will do that soon. The sound quality between the RF and stock is night and day.

Pros: Crutchfield install guidance great; sound quality great.

Cons: screws too long; brackets break easily.

I replaced the door speakers in my wife's 2007 Tahoe with these. I am extremely happy with the sound quality and how easy it was to do a direct replacement of her stock speakers.

Pros: Easy install, sound quality

Cons: Screws were way too long.

Great item for the price. Replaced stock for Nissan Maxima 1997. There were some tricky things regarding installation on the rear speakers but online videos and calling technicians from Crutchfield for assistance made this a doable weekend project.

Pros: You get what you pay for, good quality, much better than stock

Cons: Installation might be tricky

Great entry level upgrade

John D from Ohio on 7/6/2015

Upgraded to these RF in my 95' Legacy Wagon. I'm running 4 tweeters through a custom modded amp (upgraded film and electrolytic caps for improved clarity and more accurate SQ) along with an Alpine R 10" and Kicker L5 12" (have a wider dynamic presence with a 10" and 12"- sounds more natural vs. two 10's or 12's) powered by an old school Sony. High pass was always controlled at HU for doors, which were factory full-range paper cones. At low to middle-low volumes, the RF sound similar to the factory pieces they replaced. Push volume louder and they really wake up. This is where it pays to have 91db SPL as they'll hit higher db with less wattage, which in this case is the Pioneer HU. They stay surprisingly clear until you push them a little too hard, where it induces a ringing effect (around +54 volume with loudness high, SLA +4, etc.) Keeping eyes open for a 4 channel old school SQ amp around 50wpc to get the most of these. People griping about these either have a lousy HU, amp, or don't understand how to properly set them up, are running only 2 of them, etc. etc. They don't make bass. PERIOD. So don't expect that from them. You should set high pass to around 100Hz and HIGHER. You'll get a little tight mid-bass, but nothing more. I have 8Khz at -6, 3Khz around 0, 1.25k +3. My amped tweeters pick up the rest. Excellent buy these RF.

Pros: 91 db SPL helps them get louder with less wattage (wouldn't push them beyond 50w); Clear going loud which is where they shine; Highs are a little bright and artificial IF you crank the 3Khz - 10Khz range up expecting their tweeters to supply only highs, but are OK with secondary amped tweeters; Suggest replacing factory electrolytic cap with a same spec (voltage and capacitance) Elna Silmic II (for more warmth) or Cerafine (more accurate clarity) as they cost $1 each online (reputable outlets)

Cons: NOT bass speakers so get over it. Bass they do make is around 100Hz and higher despite being advertised lower, so set highpass filter to 100Hz or 125 Hz and invest in bass speakers. Highs are OK but overly bright if you set high freq. to far. Suggest lowering high freq. and running secondary tweeters via a small amp. Makes a world of difference. Pushing too hard introduces ringing, meaning you should back off volume a bit. If highpass is ignored and you crank the high freq., it'll hurt sound.

Nice

2010 Chevrolet Camaro
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Got these to replace my blown door speakers in my 2010 Camaro. Once installed, I was slightly dissapointed they are not much of an improvement from OEM. I had to make several calls to Crutchfield CS. Brackets are no where near as thick as OEM, CS told me to cut all the tabs out of the inside of the bracket to make speaker fit. The wiring harness they included would not fit in the OEM harness so they sent an alternate, but they ended up being almost exactly the same and did not fit either. Had to cut small "v's" in their harness to make it squeeze into the OEM. The mounting screws they included were an 1 1/2" too long and hit door opening, had to buy shorter ones at the hardware store, Also used some double sided tape to secure the speaker to the bracket to ensure there was no rattle.

Pros: affordable replacement. quick delivery.

Cons: a lot of modification needed to be done to make work. Had to wait extra time to install, for the replacement harness that didn't work either.Had to get my own screws to clear opening. Not much if any of an upgrade vs OEM.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Replace stock rear deck speakers in 2014 Camry. At the same time used RF Prime 169x3 for the doors. Both sets powered by the Alpine Power Pack. I like the sound from the 6x9's , but was unimpressed with the 6.750". They just felt muddled. No clear high, mid, or lows. Felt it was a step down from the fronts. I ended up replacing them with Kicker CS67 6.750" coaxial. Felt more bass response, albeit still nothing like the 6x9's upfront, and clearer highs and mids. I personally fell the the extra $20 is worth it for the kickers. Maybe I had a bad set, who knows.

Pros: Inexpensive

Cons: no real clear sound. sounds muddled.

These speakers have a really great balanced sound. They lows are low and highs are high. I believe the mid-range is good too, but it's hard to tell because I installed some Jensen 6 1/2" in the back of my vehicle and they are all high, no mid or low sounds. I wish I would have gone with two more of these, but I tried to save a few bucks with the Jensens which I now regret.

2003 Toyota Matrix
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Bought these to replace the stock front door speakers in my '03 Matrix. At this point the OEM speakers were 12 years old, so they sounded terrible, but the Rockford Fosgate Prime R65X3 are far better than what I remember the stock speakers sounded when new. There is absolutely more bass than before and the tweeters deliver crisp highs. The mid-range required some tweaking with the equalizer, but every car requires some optimization. After drilling out the rivets holding in the stock speakers, the Primes fit perfectly. Crutchfield provided adaptor rings and a wiring harness and everything fit as designed. The screws on the adaptor ring were a bit long, but usable if you take up the space with a few extra washers (pick some up before you begin if you don't have any). I've had them in about 3 weeks now and now that they have broken in they are really beginning to shine. Tempted to replace the rear speakers now!

Pros: Perfect fit. Crutchfield supplied accessories spot on. Sound fantastic

Cons: Adaptor ring mounting screws a bit too long. Nothing serious. Adaptor ring perfect (must knock out tabs on inner ring for speaker to fit-again, no big deal).

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Installed these in a 99 Saturn SL with no issue. Dropped right in and no drilling required. Overall, these sound pretty good. The bass is present and the midrange is good, but the highs are sometimes a little unpleasant. This may have more to do with source audio quality and equalizer settings on my head unit, though. For the price, this is a no-brainer, 10x better than stock solution. I should've done it sooner.

Pros: Easy to install, very loud, clear, inexpensive

Cons: None

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased these for my son for his birthday. Somehow his 2009 Mitsubishi Lancer was missing the right front speaker when he bought it. I had them sent to him in Kansas and I sent an array of tools he would need. Unfortunately he was not sent an installation sheet. He is not a mechanical person but got it done with minimal drama. All the parts provided made for a seamless installation. He states that they are much louder and clearer than the "speaker" they replace.

Pros: Nice price, good sound, all accessories needed to install properly.

Cons: No instructions sent on how to remove the door panels.

These speakers are great if you have a sub, I replaced my rear speakers in my Saturn sedean with these Primes and the sound is very crisp, if you limit the bass these speakers will take care of the rest.

Pros: Good sound, easy set up, not to pricey either.

Cons: Not the strongest mid to low range but you get what you pay for.
