Our take on the Rockford Fosgate R2SD2-10

Rockford Fosgate's Prime R2 shallow-mount subs deliver satisfying bass even in smaller cars where space is tight. A special elevated motor structure lets these low-profile subs work in extremely compact enclosures, while still handling plenty of power.

Rockford Fosgate's Prime R2 shallow-mount subs deliver satisfying bass even in smaller cars where space is tight. A special elevated motor structure lets these low-profile subs work in extremely compact enclosures, while still handling plenty of power.

The R2SD2-10 sub features a 10" mica-injected polypropylene cone that works with a high-density poly-foam surround to punch out fat, deep notes. This shallow-mount workhorse will handle up to 200 watts RMS, with a mounting depth of only 3-1/2". Rockford Fosgate stitches the tinsel leads that carry the signal to the voice coils directly into the cone, so they'll hang tough through heavy use. The stamped solid-steel frame offers the same venting found in standard-mount Rockford Fosgate subs to keep this sub running cool.

Dual 2-ohm voice coils allow you to wire this sub for 1- or 4-ohm impedance, giving you more flexibility in setting up your system. Rockford Fosgate optimizes this Prime sub for both sealed and ported enclosures so you can choose the type of bass you want in your ride.

To drive this single subwoofer, we recommend a mono amplifier rated between 150 and 300 watts RMS at 4 ohms. For more information, please refer to our article on How to Match Subwoofers and Amplifiers.

Shallow Mount Sub in '84 C10

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was skeptical about using a shallow mount sub, but in a C10 pickup there is only one place to mount a sub, behind the seat. In order to be able to move the seat all the way back a shallow mount is the only option. I built a custom sealed enclosure with 3/4" MDF (with the recommended volume of 0.7 cubic feet) making sure there was room for the sub to move without contacting the seat in it's fully back position. I am powering the sub with an older Rockford Fosgate Punch 325.2 which puts out 325 watts RMS bridged @ 4 ohms. The front stage is a pair of Pioneer TS-A1676R's mounted in custom lower door panels, and powered by a Sound Ordnance M-4050 amp. The head unit is just an old Pioneer unit I had lying around. I can honestly say I was amazed at the sound quality when I turned the system on the first time. If you are looking for SPL or want to turn heads with the monstrous bass coming from your stereo this isn't the sub for you. If you want to add the depth to your music that only a sub can provide, and space is limited, you can't go wrong with the R2SD2-10 in my opinion. It will play much louder than is comfortable to listen to in my single cab truck and sound good doing it.

Pros: Shallow depth- really increases mounting options; Sound quality- this little sub sounds awesome; Build quality- typical Rockford Fosgate, should last a long time; Price-caught it on-sale for about the same price as the cheap flea-market subs.

Cons: Slightly lacking in output compared to a full depth sub, but if you are looking at shallow mounts then you are probably in the situation I was in and need the room.

Awesome subs for single cab !

Justice from Pass Christian Ms on 3/6/2015

Have 3 10 inch primes 2s in a Ford F150 Single cab, the box is sealed and theyre paired to a Sound ordance M.1500 (500watts) mono amp. At 2 ohms the subs are wired to 2.7 and they have amazing all around bass. Very deep and deserve more power.

Pros: Good bass.

Cons: None

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These subs are definitely loud for being so shallow, they have a nice deep sound. They look to have been built very sturdy, and solid

Pros: Fit where most subs will not

Cons: A little pricey.

Excellent sub for the price

Hands-on research

Product Research

Shallow Mount Design: The Rockford Fosgate Prime R2 Shallow Subwoofer is designed and engineered with a much smaller motor assembly which reduces the overall depth of the woofer allowing it to fit in shallower enclosures and tighter locations of your vehicle.

Dual 2-ohm Voice Coils: This woofer features dual 2-ohm voice coils to offer wiring flexibility. When the voice coils are wired in parallel the woofer presents a 1-ohm load, when wired in series it presents a 4-ohm load.

Spring Post Assembly: The woofer features compression input terminals with attached 16-gauge stitched tinsel lead wires. The nickel plated spring posts will accept pin connectors, single banana plugs, and bare wire up to 12-gauge.

Sealed Box Volume: Rockford Fosgate recommends a sealed enclosure with an optimum internal volume of 0.7 cubic feet (from 0.5 to 0.75 cubic feet is acceptable). Sealed enclosures provide the most control over a woofer, will handle a lot of power, and provide accurate sonic reproduction, making them suitable to all types of music.

Vented Box Volume: Rockford Fosgate recommends a vented enclosure with an internal volume of 1.4 cubic feet using a 4" diameter x 13.7" long port tube; this yields a tuning frequency of 42 Hz. Ported (or vented) enclosures typically provide better overall efficiency than sealed so they are suitable for use with smaller amplifiers, giving you more bass output from less power. However, this efficiency comes at the expense of very low frequency output (below 35 Hz).

Why did you buy this?

I needed a shallow amount sub to fit behind the seat of a 1984 C10 pick-up. This one fit perfectly and really surprised me with the sound. [ WILLIAM  Dec 05, 2016 ]

It seems thst it will fit as a replacement for my 2002 Toyota Solara SLE convertible, the price was low, is a shallow mount, and appears to be rated highly. [ MARK  Apr 08, 2016 ]
it looks like it will fit my truck good [ Michael  Apr 02, 2016 ]

1 question already asked

I used this in a sealed box. I also am powering with an amp that is way to much wattage. The gain turned down about half. Depending on your power situation and of course style of music will depend on application. If underpowered, use ported boxes. [ David  Dec 02, 2014 ]
I built a custom box for my f-150 and only placed a single sub beacuse I did not want the bass to over power the cab. The box is 12"w 6"t 14L. I would recommend two smaller boxes instead of one long dual sub box so the air flow does not get wasted inside the box all the sound will travel from the box into the cab with two single enclosures. If you do need to make or purchase a single dual sub box make sure it has a vent tube in the center so you can get more then just one frequency of bass and all around lows. You can find plenty of diagrams online if you want to make one or you can also lok up ones made specificaly for your truck. With a single cab it might be easier to build what you want for space and location. Hope that helps and congrats on the new system. [ Joshua  Nov 30, 2014 ]
