Our take on the Rockford Fosgate RFXMP3.8
Hours of custom music mixes downloaded from the 'Net. Rockford Fosgate's RFXMP3.8 MP3 changer offers MP3 file playback through a device small enough to fit in the palm of your hand, with no moving parts never a skip or hiccup.
MP3 (MPEG-1 Audio Layer 3) music "files" are downloaded from the Internet (or "ripped" from your own CDs) and then stored in your computer. You can transfer these music files (using the included docking station) to tiny memory cards (about the size of a postage stamp). The RFXMP3.8 holds up to 8 individual multi-media (MMC) cards providing hours of music. You can expect the supplied 8 MB Multi Media Card to hold up to 1/2 hour of music, depending on the sound quality (i.e., amount of compression) of the recording. Optional cards with larger capacity can hold up to 1-1/2 hours of near CD-quality sound (up to 4 hours of near FM-quality sound).
Any compatible RFX head unit (beginning with the prefix "RFX82" or "RFX83") will control all of the changer's functions, including direct track access (from remote), direct card access (from remote), track repeat, and track random. One 8 MB multi-media card is included.
Important Note: This unit is not compatible with Apple computers.Details:
- stores up to 8 MMC cards
- will play MP3 files recorded from 8Kbps to 160Kbps, fixed bit rate or variable bit rate compression
- ultra-compact size will fit in any glove compartment or in many center consoles
- changer has no moving parts it will not skip and it can be mounted at any angle
- dimensions: 4-7/16"W x 2-3/8"H x 3-7/16"D (changer); 1-11/16"W x 3"H x 3-13/16"D (docking station); 1"W x 1-5/16"H x 1/16"D (multi-media card)

Note: As of June 2000, this first edition of the RFXMP3.8 changer will operate on the Windows NT format, however, you will not be able to print from the printer through the shared port. If you are comfortable unplugging your RFXMP3.8 changer to plug back in your printer, Windows NT will work fine. Additionally, the multi-media card icon will not show that a card is inserted in the down loader. Per Rockford, they are working to fix this, so please check rockfordfosgate.com for updates.
Software Compatibility: The RFXMP3.8 is not compatible with Apple computers.
Head Unit Compatibility: Although the RFXMP3.8 changer will work with RFX head units designated by the prefix "RFX82" or "RFX83", this unit is not compatible with the RFX8340 or RFX8350. Any compatible RFX head unit will control all of the changer's functions, including direct track access (from the head unit's remote), direct card access (from the head unit's remote), track repeat, and track random.
MP3 File Playback: This unit can play MP3 files that have been recorded with fixed bit rate (8-160 kbps) or variable bit rate compression. You can record using multiple bit rates on the same card.
Skip-Free Playback: Because this changer has no moving parts, playback will always be skip-free.
Compact Size: The changer's compact size gives it great mounting flexibility.
Mounting: Since the changer is extremely small, it can be mounted in the glove compartment, under the dash (using the supplied mounting brackets), or even in some center consoles. Additionally, this unit can be mounted at any angle.
Multi-Media Card: Additional multi-media cards are available at most computer supply stores. The multi-media cards are 0.947" wide, 1.262" long, and 0.055" thick.
General Overview: MP3 (MPEG-1 Audio Layer 3) music "files" are downloaded from the Internet (or "ripped" from your own CDs) and then stored in your computer. Using the supplied software and down loader, you can transfer these music files to tiny multi-media cards (about the size of a postage stamp). The RFXMP3.8 holds up to 8 individual multi-media cards.
Connections: The male DB25 connector should be plugged into the parallel port of your computer. The male PS/2 connector should be plugged into the mouse port of your computer and your mouse should be plugged into the down loader's female PS/2 connector. If you have a printer, connect the printer plug to the down loader's female DB25 connector.
