Lots of ways to listen

The CS-355's AM/FM tuner features 30 station presets to keep you in touch with local news, weather, and music. The disc player handles standard music CDs, as well as home-burned MP3 discs. A front-panel USB input lets you connect your iPod®, iPhone®, or iPad® and control it using the Onkyo remote. You can also plug a thumb drive loaded with music into the USB port and enjoy your favorites that way. Plus, built-in Bluetooth allows super-convenient wireless playback from compatible smart phones, tablets, or personal computers.

And you're not limited to just the music stored on your device. Use your tablet to connect to your favorite online music streaming service, for example, and enjoy your own personal radio station's selections through the CS-355. Or stream the soundtrack from the video you're watching on your smartphone. The system's auxiliary input even lets you connect an additional audio component.

Small system with a big sound

With no shortage of music to play, you'll need a system with speakers that can handle the action. Each of the Onkyo's speaker cabinets boast a 3-15/16"  cone woofer for potent bass and clear midrange, while a balanced 3/4" dome tweeter supplies smooth treble with plenty of detail. The rounded enclosures have subtly angled sides to prevent internal standing waves and the boomy sound that can result. Driven by an ample 15 watts per channel, this system will fill your entire room with beautiful music.

review of Onkyo CS-355 Colibrino

ChuckG from Naples, FL on 5/24/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Excellent sound from this small unit. Good reception for our local FM stations. Remote rather small, but easy to use when you take a bit of time with it.

Pros: Sound, reception, appearance ( the red is not fire engine red-looks more lively than black)

Cons: None come to mind

Room-filling sound with great stereo separation

Harry from Richmond, VA on 3/2/2014

Great sound from such a small unit. We have another brand of small stereo that advertises "room filling sound", but that unit is an all-in-one box; when you stand across the room from that unit, it's very apparent all the sound is coming from one central point. The Onkyo unit has separate speakers you can position away from the receiver to get true stereo separation. The Onkyo also recreates a full range of sound, from the deepest bass all the way thru the highest pitch. Thoroughly great sound from such a small, unobtrusive package. We are very pleased.

Pros: The Bluetooth streaming feature is very handy.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The order through Crutchfield was on target with good input from all on the phone for advise.

Pros: Compact, easy to set up. Still getting used to other items to program so will learn as I go but Crutchfield has been helpful with any questions.

Cons: FM radio antenna is not sufficient to pull in stations except the very strongest signal in rural setting.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The system has radio, CD, Bluetooth and USB. I use the latter two for my IPOD. The sound is great and is indicative of the speakers having separate woofers and tweeters. The ability to separate them also adds to the sound quality.

Pros: Stylish system with the ability to play radio, CD and connect the latest components via USB and Bluetooth.

Cons: none

Onkyo is a miss

TedS from San Jose, Ca on 2/2/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The cs-355 looks good and sounds great. I needed a system to play flash drive (thumb drive) via USB input. I followed the directions in the manual. Didn't work. I called Onkyo and they didn't help (didn't return my call as promised). I tried a replacement unit from Crutchfield (the support was excellent). Unfortunately it appears to be an internal problem at Onyko. I will continue to use Crutchfield as a supplier, but Onkyo is on my do not use list.

Pros: Compact and good sound

Cons: Doesn't play flash drives through USB input as stated in unit description and operation manual. Manufacturer representative in New Jersey not reliable(didn't return call as promised).

Great sound for such a small receiver!

Pam from Huntington Beach, CA on 1/4/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This little system has it all! Bluetooth your music for MP3 or Pandora! Plays single CD's, and AM/FM receiver! Plus you can use a flash drive or USB! Has a clock with a sleep timer also! Great little system for my 80 year old mother who wanted something simple to operate, but us kids can take over and use to the fullest! Great price on the unit, beat all other units for the low cost! Thanks again and I will return for other items!

Pros: Easy to use, a child or elderly person can operate! CD, Bluetooth, USB or AM/FM receiver! Fits in small spaces!

Cons: Wireless speakers would have completed the package!

Versatile for "old" media and new

JSRuss from New York City on 12/31/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

My partner is both wheelchair bound and a music professional who demands good sound but can't readily fiddle with switches and wires. Very few small systems sound well with bluetooth connectivity yet have CD players and "old fashioned" radio. This has all those possibilities accessible by remote, one that's quite well designed considering all the functions it handles. We really like the sound. It's good looking. We're thrilled. My first purchase at Crutchfield, where advisor Marshall helped me sort out my complicated needs. Terrific.

Pros: versatility: radio, CD, bluetooth, iPod, etc. connectivity; excellent sound

Cons: None!

I needed a radio/cd player for my "man cave" - satellite radio portal was a must -- Onkyo CS-355 was what I was looking for - great price - great sound - light weight - easy to assemble and operate

Great sound & value

Jamesboy from Overland Park, KS on 8/26/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I am extremely pleased with this acquisition; it was bought to replace a Bose Wave Radio. I much prefer the bright clear full range sounds of the Onkyo to the heavy bass and light mid-range of my previous unit. A Crutchfield representative recommended this Onkyo unit over a more expensive brand I was considering and I am thankful for that recommendation; he saved me money and got me the sound I wanted.

Pros: Good clarity with full rang of sound. Very good functionality overall. Nice size and very useable remote. Great price!

Cons: None.

Fantastic and compact system!

Anonymous from Richmond,Va on 5/3/2013

I purchased this gem after researching and testing many compact shelf systems. I have a vast collection of CD's and was looking for a replacement to my aging bookshelf system. This system is bar none the best on the market and you will not be disappointed. System set-up was a breeze and the sound is truly phenominal for a system of its size. Onkyo has a history of making quality electronics and this is no exception. From the main system to the speakers and the remote, quality abounds. The system plays back regular and burned CD's with ease and no skipping. I recommended this system without reservation.

Pros: Quality materials Compact footprint Amazing sound Easy set-up

Cons: None

The evolution of small home stereo

PS from Sarasota FL on 3/21/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I wanted to replace my old Panasonic shelf stereo, (it had cassette decks) with one with Bluetooth and USB. And I wanted affordable quality. I have multiple Bluetooth and this handles up to 8. Planning on putting my cd collection on USB drives and this handles that, also takes line in from my cable TV box so I can stream pandora through them and of course better sound than my TV. Couldn't care less about surround sound an all that.

Pros: Overall excellent, got what I paid for, my first Crutchfield order and very happy.

Cons: I would have paid a little more for a slightly larger unit but that said, I will be keeping this one for sure.

Lynn, I recommend that you research your question with Onkyo. We have an iphone 4s and it is compatible. The bluetooth connectivity is excellent. I did check the operator's manual, it states that the unit is '"made for...iPhone 4S, iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPhone 3G, iPhone, iPad (3rd gen), iPad 2 and iPad". Good luck. [ Richard  Dec 23, 2013 ]
Lynn, I bought this item for my daughter as a Christmas present. It hasn't been opened. Sorry I could not be more help. [ Michael  Dec 23, 2013 ]
Hi Lynn, I'm REALLY embarassed that I don't know the answer to this question being that I live in the Silicon Valley and work across the street from Google and 5 miles from Apple. But I do know that while there is no docking station per se, there is an ISB port right on the front of the unit which should accomodate all forms of gadgets, and also has Blue Tooth capability. I'm sorry this wasn't more helpful, but I will add that I absolutely love this unit; it's beautiful and modern, fits on the bookshelf, and sounds amazing. I was also blown away by the care and quality of the packing - just sayin'. Happy Holidays! [ Deborah  Dec 23, 2013 ]
it works great with the iPhone 5, and my iPad 4, you can connect with blue tooth from any Blue Tooth device, we've connected with several devices my kids love this new system. My wife had a Christmas party and tuned in the FM Christmas station but couldnt stand the commercials, and asked if I could hook up the XM, I needed to wire it in and the party already started, the easy thing to do was blue tooth in with her iPad, and we had great music all night long. the system sounds great. [ Marc  Dec 23, 2013 ]
yes works well with 5 and 4s. [ FRANCINE E  Dec 23, 2013 ]
tis is a great unit.IT has a full lighted display which can be dimmed by the dimmer button on the remote marked dimmer.I bought the white one and it has become my favorite music system [ HOPE A  Mar 12, 2014 ]
Just checked. Yes it does dim but not off. Should not be too bright for a bedroom. BT W - love the unit - great sound in our 20x 24 studio. Hope this helps. James [ James  Mar 11, 2014 ]
There is a Dimmer button on the remote that will change the brightness of the display to around 50% of normal brightness. It will not shut it off completely. [ RICHARD  Mar 11, 2014 ]
I haven't seen an option to change the brightness but to be honest I haven't specifically checked. I will check for this later today. [ James  Mar 11, 2014 ]
I have the unit about 3 feet from my head, next to the bed. The display is a set of dot-matrix LED's that are fairly small. Don't expect to read them from across the room. The normal brightness setting is fine and there also is a dimmer setting. Either setting is not distracting or too bright for use next to a bed. My alarm clock is more of a distraction (it's so bright that I can read a newspaper with the light it gives off). [ Eugene  Mar 11, 2014 ]
I would call the display bright and can be dimmed a little, but can't be turned off. [ Marvin  Mar 11, 2014 ]
The display is somewhat bright and can be dimmed by one level. If the unit is close to the bed, it could be distracting. [ Gary  Mar 11, 2014 ]
