Our take on the Onkyo CS-355 Colibrino by Crutchfield's Dave Bar
Play it your way with style
Onkyo's compact CS-355 Colibrino music system makes a stylish choice for high-quality listening in smaller spaces. With its great sound and looks, this mini system packs the technology you need to enjoy all your tunes with ease. No matter how you take your entertainment — CDs, local radio, your iPod®, smartphone, laptop or tablet PC — the CS-355 will play it all back with surprising power, detail, and clarity.
Lots of ways to listen
The CS-355's AM/FM tuner features 30 station presets to keep you in touch with local news, weather, and music. The disc player handles standard music CDs, as well as home-burned MP3 discs. A front-panel USB input lets you connect your iPod®, iPhone®, or iPad® and control it using the Onkyo remote. You can also plug a thumb drive loaded with music into the USB port and enjoy your favorites that way. Plus, built-in Bluetooth allows super-convenient wireless playback from compatible smart phones, tablets, or personal computers.
And you're not limited to just the music stored on your device. Use your tablet to connect to your favorite online music streaming service, for example, and enjoy your own personal radio station's selections through the CS-355. Or stream the soundtrack from the video you're watching on your smartphone. The system's auxiliary input even lets you connect an additional audio component.
Small system with a big sound
With no shortage of music to play, you'll need a system with speakers that can handle the action. Each of the Onkyo's speaker cabinets boast a 3-15/16" cone woofer for potent bass and clear midrange, while a balanced 3/4" dome tweeter supplies smooth treble with plenty of detail. The rounded enclosures have subtly angled sides to prevent internal standing waves and the boomy sound that can result. Driven by an ample 15 watts per channel, this system will fill your entire room with beautiful music.
Well described. I looked at reviews elsewhere also and decided this was the one to do the job as a shop sound uinit that is on for hours each day and needs a good FM radio and all the other things as well. I am using a sub woofer and it fills my space just fine.

Onkyo CS-355 Colibrino Reviews
Average Customer Review(s):
Thanks for submitting your review
Overview: The Onkyo CS-355 is a compact audio mini-system with a built-in stereo amplifier, CD player, AM/FM tuner, front-panel USB port for connection of an iPod/iPhone/iPad or USB flash memory device, and built-in Bluetooth technology. It comes with a pair of 2-way speakers, and a wireless remote control.
Note: Available in black, white, or red,
Amplifier Section: The CS-355 is equipped with a two-channel digital amplifier, which produces 15 watts per channel at 6Ω (1 kHz, 10% THD). From the front-panel or remote, you can adjust the bass (100 Hz) and treble (10 kHz) by +/-10dB. The Super Bass control adds up to +8dB of bass (80 Hz) when activated. The speaker outputs feature binding posts that allow you to connect the speakers via bare wire, pin connectors, or single banana plugs. A collar around the binding post prevents the use of spade lugs, and the terminals are spaced too far apart for dual banana plugs.
CD Playback: The CS-355's single-disc CD player will play Audio CDs and CD-R/CD-RW discs. Standard 12cm discs, as well as 8cm CDs can be played. It will also play back MP3 (32-320 kbps) music files recorded with ISO 9660 Level 1/2; a maximum of 299 folders/648 files per folder can be recognized on a single disc. Playback functions include; Play/Pause, Fast Forward/Rewind, Previous/Next Track, and Random/Repeat. The CD player features a single-bit D/A converter.
AM/FM Tuner Section: The unit has an AM/FM tuner with manual, seek, and preset tuning. You can store up to 30 AM and 30 FM station presets. With the Auto Preset function, you can automatically preset all of the FM radio stations available in your area. An AM loop antenna and FM wire antenna are included.
Bluetooth A2DP (w/ aptX): The Onkyo CS-335's built-in Bluetooth (v2.1+EDR) lets you wirelessly stream music from any Bluetooth-enabled device supporting A2DP (Advanced Audio Distribution Profile). The unit can store the pairing information of up to 8 Bluetooth devices (only one can be used at a time). The CS-335 also supports aptX, an audio coding technology that works within Bluetooth to wirelessly deliver CD-quality audio from your Bluetooth-enabled device to the Onkyo system. With apt-X, you can listen to your digital music files in crisp, pure, and full stereo sound. You will continue to use your Bluetooth-enabled device to control playback and view artist/song information.
Note: Due to the differences in Bluetooth technology, some Bluetooth enabled devices may be incompatible, function improperly, or may not support all features when used with the Onkyo CS-335
Front-Panel USB Port: The unit's front-panel USB (type-A) port allows you to connect a USB Mass Storage Class (MSC) compliant device; such as your Android smartphone, portable digital audio player, or USB thumbdrive. Your USB MSC device must be formatted in FAT16 or FAT32. The USB port enables audio playback & control of audio files stored on portable USB mass-storage class devices. Compatible music file formats include MP3 (8-320 kbps); a maximum of 299 folders/648 files per folder can be recognized on a single USB device. Basic playback functions include; Play/Pause, Fast Forward/Rewind, Previous/Next Track, and Random/Repeat. In addition, the unit is compatible with ID3/WMA Tags and will display song/artist information. USB portable audio players that can be charged via USB will be charged when plugged into the unit's USB port.
"Made for iPod/iPhone/iPad": You can also use the unit's front-panel USB (type-A) port to connect your Apple iPod, iPhone, or iPad. Simply connect your iPod, iPhone, or iPad to the unit's front-panel USB port via the cable that comes with your Apple device. The CS-355 supports audio playback, menu navigation, and charging of your compatible Apple device. The CS-355 supports playback of music stored on your iPod/iPhone/iPad, or music from downloaded apps (such as Pandora, Spotify, or MOG). You can control music playback from the unit's remote control, or continue to use your Apple device's clickwheel or touchscreen. You will continue to use your Apple device's LCD screen to view song/artist information. While connected, your iPod/iPhone/iPad is charged via USB. The Onkyo CS-335 supports the following models of iPod, iPhones, and iPhones (as of 12/14/2012).
|iPod/iPhone Model||Generation||Tested Version||Media Type||Control Type||Display Type||Bluetooth Audio||Charge|
|Audio||Video||Remote||iPod/iPhone||Artist/Song Text||Numeric Track Info|
Note: Apple iPod/iPhone software updates may change functionality results. If you download a newer software version, you may need to reset the unit and your iPod/iPhone to regain functionality. If this doesn't work, you may need to wait until a newer software update is available.
Line Input: An auxiliary audio device, such as a TV, tape deck or MP3 player, can be connected to the unit via the stereo RCA jacks on the rear panel.
2-Way Speakers: The CS-445 comes with a pair of 2-way, 6Ω speakers. The speakers feature a 3/4" balanced dome tweeter and a 3.9375" woofer, loaded into a bass reflex enclosure (with front-firing port). - Weight: 3.5 lbs
Subwoofer Preamp Output: There is a mono RCA jack for connecting a powered subwoofer.
Headphone Jack: For private listening, the CS-335 has a front-panel 3.5mm minijack headphone output. When headphones are connected, the unit's speakers are muted.

Remote Control: The CS-355 comes with an IR remote for wireless operation of the system and your connected Apple (iPod/iPhone/iPad) or USB (MSC) device.
Timers: The CS-335 has a programmable timer for automated playback, and a sleep timer for turning the system off after a specified period. You can also use the alarm playback function of your iPod/iPhone to initiate timer playback on the CD receiver. The timer can be used to start AM/FM, CD, iPod/USB, or Aux playback at a specified time. You could, for example, use a timer to turn on the CD receiver every morning, just like a radio alarm clock. The sleep timer can be set between 90 and 10 minutes (in 10 minute increments).

Hey Lynn, With the USB input in "iPod" mode (switch by holding the Mode button on the remote 3 seconds to go between iPod and USB modes), my iPhone 5 worked seamlessly with the system. In addition, the Bluetooth was seamless with my iPad mini and iPhone 5. Thanks, Erik [ Erik Dec 23, 2013 ]
Lynn, I recommend that you research your question with Onkyo. We have an iphone 4s and it is compatible. The bluetooth connectivity is excellent. I did check the operator's manual, it states that the unit is '"made for...iPhone 4S, iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPhone 3G, iPhone, iPad (3rd gen), iPad 2 and iPad". Good luck. [ Richard Dec 23, 2013 ]
Lynn, I bought this item for my daughter as a Christmas present. It hasn't been opened. Sorry I could not be more help. [ Michael Dec 23, 2013 ]
Hi Lynn, I'm REALLY embarassed that I don't know the answer to this question being that I live in the Silicon Valley and work across the street from Google and 5 miles from Apple. But I do know that while there is no docking station per se, there is an ISB port right on the front of the unit which should accomodate all forms of gadgets, and also has Blue Tooth capability. I'm sorry this wasn't more helpful, but I will add that I absolutely love this unit; it's beautiful and modern, fits on the bookshelf, and sounds amazing. I was also blown away by the care and quality of the packing - just sayin'. Happy Holidays! [ Deborah Dec 23, 2013 ]
it works great with the iPhone 5, and my iPad 4, you can connect with blue tooth from any Blue Tooth device, we've connected with several devices my kids love this new system. My wife had a Christmas party and tuned in the FM Christmas station but couldnt stand the commercials, and asked if I could hook up the XM, I needed to wire it in and the party already started, the easy thing to do was blue tooth in with her iPad, and we had great music all night long. the system sounds great. [ Marc Dec 23, 2013 ]
yes works well with 5 and 4s. [ FRANCINE E Dec 23, 2013 ]
tis is a great unit.IT has a full lighted display which can be dimmed by the dimmer button on the remote marked dimmer.I bought the white one and it has become my favorite music system [ HOPE A Mar 12, 2014 ]
Just checked. Yes it does dim but not off. Should not be too bright for a bedroom. BT W - love the unit - great sound in our 20x 24 studio. Hope this helps. James [ James Mar 11, 2014 ]
There is a Dimmer button on the remote that will change the brightness of the display to around 50% of normal brightness. It will not shut it off completely. [ RICHARD Mar 11, 2014 ]
I haven't seen an option to change the brightness but to be honest I haven't specifically checked. I will check for this later today. [ James Mar 11, 2014 ]
I have the unit about 3 feet from my head, next to the bed. The display is a set of dot-matrix LED's that are fairly small. Don't expect to read them from across the room. The normal brightness setting is fine and there also is a dimmer setting. Either setting is not distracting or too bright for use next to a bed. My alarm clock is more of a distraction (it's so bright that I can read a newspaper with the light it gives off). [ Eugene Mar 11, 2014 ]
I would call the display bright and can be dimmed a little, but can't be turned off. [ Marvin Mar 11, 2014 ]
The display is somewhat bright and can be dimmed by one level. If the unit is close to the bed, it could be distracting. [ Gary Mar 11, 2014 ]
