Our take on the Onkyo TX-8050

For years, Onkyo's stereo receivers have won raves from our customers for their terrific sound quality. The TX-8050 boasts 80 watts per channel of clean, high-current power to deliver a powerful sonic punch that's sure to satisfy. Sure, it has RCA inputs for your turntable and cassette deck but the '8050 also boasts a full complement of analog video and digital audio inputs. Plus it adds the connections you need for today's music sources.

A receiver for fans of both digital and analog music

You still have a turntable and maybe a cassette deck, but you're not living in the past. Your collection includes today's digital music formats as well. And this has made finding the right receiver a real challenge — until now.

Give your iPod® a front-row seat

A music library used to take two friends and a moving van to carry around. Now you can simply put it in your pocket. The TX-8050's front-panel USB port beckons your iPod to come hither. Its direct digital connection bypasses the iPods processing in favor of a 32-bit chip that can make your higher bit-rate music files sound closer to the original CD. Plus, you can download a free app that lets you use your iPhone® as a convenient Wi-Fi® remote with your connected receiver.

Network- and Internet-ready

Tap in to your home network and enjoy music stored on your PC through your main system, instead of through pint-sized computer speakers. And if you have a Wi-Fi® network, you can use the optional Onkyo USB adapter. Choose from thousands of Internet radio stations — or let PANDORA® Internet radio create a set of customized "stations" based on your own tastes.

Finally — a not-too-bright idea

You've seen it before. How could you not? Receiver displays so intense they could be used to warn ships at sea of potential hazards. Yet your living room is not exactly a craggy shoal. The TX-8050 display has three settings — normal, dim and dimmer. Now when you want to turn the lights down for atmosphere, your receiver will go as easy on your eyes as it does on your ears.

It lived for maybe 50 hours

Michael from Hazel Park, MI on 5/8/2016

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Bought the unit in the summer of 2013. Since then I have used it maybe 50 hours at most. Went to use it last week and no sound. Unit turned on but no output. Very disappointed that it had stopped working, especially with such little use. Since it had worked fine when I had and could use it I decided I'd take it in for an estimate for repair. Looked for an authorized Onkyo repair facility and could not find one anywhere in the state of Michigan. I will contact Onkyo and see what they have to say but I suspect it's going to cost near the price of the item to ship it for repairs so it may end up on the front curb on trash day. Also find it interesting that at least a few others who bough this around the same time as myself have reported theirs stopped working around the 2.5 year mark. Hard to believe the components used in this receiver are what they should be.

Pros: It did what I needed it to do when it worked. Was happy with the sound quality and operation of the unit.

Cons: That's in the review.

Great Receiver But

Artie from raleigh, NC on 1/24/2016

This is a great doesn't feel/sound as good as my 30+ year old receiver that finally failed and had to be replaced. It's just as powerful, but my old receiver had a built in electronic graphic equalizer. Really allowed me to customize the sound. I don't think you can even buy a receiver anymore with that type of feature. Certainly not for a reasonable price.

Pros: Has great sound, and the remote works quite well. It was easy to hook up and the phono input feature (yep, still have a lot of vinyl) was an absolute requirement that worked well. It has plenty of analog inputs and the digital optical audio is a nice input for your TV or other digital devices. My kids of course loved the ipod/itouch input.

Cons: Depending on your hookup flexibilities, you might need a switch if you need more than one digital optical audio input.

So far, so good

David from Utah on 1/17/2016

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

So far, does what it is supposed to. Easy to set up. The only weakness, and I know this is a weakness of the vast majority of receivers., is the IR remote

Happy, happy, happy

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

i'm very happy with my Onkyo TX 8050 receiver. FAST shipping, easy set up, great sound, and reasonably priced. I've bought my audio equipment from Crutchfield for years and will continue to do so in the future. I'm a happy camper.

Pros: FAST shipping, easy set up, great sound, and reasonably priced.

Cons: No cons

Nice Unit

DalTee from Connecticut on 12/28/2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Nice unit. I bought this because my new TV only have digital outs and no analog. I'm a two channel guy and a pre-amp with digital ins wasn't in my price range. All of the features are there, and I have it connected via Ethernet. Purchased all new TosLink, RCA, and HDMI cables. I am currently running this with a Yamaha MX-600 PowerAmp, Definitive Technology BP - 8060s, Kinivo HDMI switch, Kinivo Bluetooth receiver. The newer unit has Bluetooth, but only one out besides the Zone 2. I needed to run this as a PreAmp. Sound is great. Make sure you get the firmware updated or Sirius won't play.

Pros: 1. Being able to use as a preamp and still be able to use the receiver speaker outs 2. Digital ins 3. Internet ready 4. USB in 5. Two Channel! 6. Sounds great

Cons: One or two more digital ins would be key.

So far so good

Mark from Baltimore, Maryland on 12/27/2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Decent sound, the streaming internet (pandora) was easier to set up than I thought, this is a solid receiver and excellent for getting music from the net.

Pros: Nice layout, good quality sound, connections and internet set up were fast and easy, great price for the features

Cons: None so far

Plug and Play Flexibility

Ned R from Hudson Highlands on 12/6/2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

No fuss plug and play simple high quality sound. Great for music listening and powering speakers in two rooms. Internet radio is easy to start up and frees up my computer/phone to do other tasks. Attractive dimmable display, easy to use menus. Remote looks nice on the table. I was surprised my iPhone 4s was not recognized by the USB port, so I am running my iPhone 3Gs instead. That way I can just leave the ipod/phone plugged into the receiver all the time and keep my current phone with me for controlling the receiver thru the Onkyo Remote App - a fantastic convenience when I'm in the other room. Music Optimizer mode enhances music automatically. This is the first receiver I've purchased since 1992, and it is nice that it does not require constant bass/treble adjustments.

Pros: Attractive dimmable display. Easy to use menus. Attractive remote. iPhone remote app.

Cons: USB plug does not recognize iPhone4s. Volume knob on front feels plastic (just use the remote).

Onkyo TX-8050

Gary W from New Jersey on 11/16/2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

So far this has been an impressive unit. The amplifier section is clean and nicely balanced. Listening in the "direct" mode adds some detail to the sonic image.. The networking feature, while a bit difficult to set up, works well. The vTuner with support from Onkyo's internet site makes finding and setting up streaming pre-sets quite easy.

Pros: Clean sound, solid unit, comprehensive instructions, supremely adaptable to any number of sources.

Cons: panel indicator lights are very small. The remote is adequate but no more to fully program and control the receiver.

Love it

Scott from Texas on 11/14/2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Works just as I had hoped. Good streaming of Pandora and powers 12 small speakers throughout my house. Very satisfied.

Pros: Great sound. Tons of great features. Easy set up.

Cons: Interface to type in pandora account information is a bit annoying, but only a one time event.

Great looking and functional.

MichaelS from North Carolina on 11/12/2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

An excellent unit for listening to vinyl. The connections accommodate banana plugs, a far better set up than the unit I had to send back. The USB port allows easy connection of my digital music too. And, the team at Crutchfield was super helpful in helping me send back the unit that did not meet my needs and assist in selecting this unit to replace. Thanks!

Everything I Need

RonC from Fort Wayne, IN on 11/5/2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Although I'd been somewhat familiar withwith the brand, I never owned an Onkyo product until now. I wish I had years ago! I replaced a Marantz NR1504 with this Onkyo. It gives me much more of what I need, and doesn't clutter things up with what I don't. I find it MUCH easier to deal with on a daily basis than the Marantz. For example, it has actual knobs to adjust bass, treble, and balance. No more having to access a complicated user interface to make simple adjustments. It also comes with a good old paper copy of the users manual. No more having to access it online or on a disc. This is a real time saver when you just want to look something up quickly. Overall, I couldn't be happier with the TX-8050. It keeps things simple, but still has all the features and performance that I need.

Pros: Features, simplicity.

Cons: None.

Good but...

mb from Boston, MA on 10/28/2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Solid and simple receiver I use for 2 zones and speakers in 4 rooms. App is very clunky and often gets hung up. As of Oct 28, Onkyo has yet to add a patch to fix XM Sirius streaming (been a month now). Would suggest confirm on the mnfg site this patch is fixed prior to buying this and if need this feature. Many of us paying for the XM stream but the receiver cannot process the data!

Pros: Good power, simple interface

Cons: App, XMSirius

Onkyo TX-8050

Tod from Maine on 10/18/2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This was purchased to replace a stereo receiver I have had for a long time. It is better than my old receiver in every way. The setup went without a hitch and the Onkyo's performance is exemplary. The ability to access stations over the internet is amazing! With my old receiver I could get just two classical stations but now there are dozens from all over the world. Wonderful!

Pros: Increased number of internet stations.

Cons: A little tricky setting up the internet connection but once done, has worked fine.

Anthony from Michigan on 10/11/2015

Awsome receiver. I can't believe all the features it has for the money. I own other Onkyo 2-channel receivers, but none have pre-amp outputs, subwoofer outputs or 2 zone capabilities. The amplifier section is powerful and clear. I was using a cheaper receiver, when I hooked this up the speakers sounded totally different. I couldn't be happier with this product.

Pros: Lots of inputs. Lots of outputs. Great Onkyo sound. Great price.

Cons: None

BT from New York on 9/17/2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

this receiver is exactly what I needed. it was easy to hook up and simple to use. the vtuner has an Endless supply of any music you could want. I blast this thing all the time and it never has a problem, its probably been on more then its been off since I got it. great receiver, plenty of power. Sounds great with the tv also, just with 2 infinity speakers, no fancy surround system.

Pros: Vtuner Power Easy to setup/use ability to expand system

Cons: none

Onkyo TX 8050

Anonymous from North Carolina on 9/4/2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I'm not very experienced with stereo equipment. I had an 30 year old Onkyo receiver that stopped working and upgraded to this with a set of Infiniti P363 speakers. I love the sound that this combination puts out at low volumes as well as when it is pushing more amps. I've been listening to different types of music on it for a couple of weeks now and I really find nothing to complain about. The set up is easy (but I was having trouble getting a good connection before I bought some banana plugs. Haven't used the Wi Fi yet, really not sure that I'll need it. I listen to my music library from an Ipod plugged into the front or through the TV with Apple TV. So far so good.

Onkyo TX-8050

VARocks from North Texas on 9/2/2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The receiver was easy to set up and has a lot of useful functions. I am a bit disappointed in the sound, it is a little flat. Setting up the Pandora radio was very easy, just follow the prompts on the display. My receiver is positioned next to my wifi extender, so I just ran an ethernet cable directly to the extender, so no history on setting up wifi.

Pros: Easy setup, easy internet radio setup

Cons: Sound is flat compared to my old receiver.

A lot for the money

Rorge from Indiana on 8/31/2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I use the main channel for around the pool and zone 2, with an amplifier, in the garage. I choose this unit for the price and it's networking capabilities. I didn't want to have to get out of the pool to change songs, radio stations, or even turn up the volume. I love that we can control the internet stations like Panadora, V tuner, spotify, and slacker right from our smart phones. The only issue I have had is that using the UWF-1 wireless LAN adapter, we would lose connection frequently and sometime to the point where we had to completely restart the system. This is my third TX-8050, as the first one the USB port quit working and then the main channel amp quit working. I purchased a new one from Crutchfield and the network card did not work. I conviently exchanged it and ran an Ethernet cable and have not had an issue as of yet.

Pros: A networking stereo with plenty of features for less than $300

Cons: Wireless networking is iffy at best, run an Ethernet cable

Great receiver for our new student center

CoachM from Arkansas on 8/24/2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

We needed a new stereo system for our new student center at the college I work at. We purchased this one along with just two of the Bose bookshelf speakers, 100 foot of Monster speaker wire, it has plenty of sound for our new area! We use Sirius XM on it, and did not have to install an antenna on top of the building, like our stereo receivers in the Rec center. This one only needs the WiFi adapter, and then you can stream Sirius XM from the internet. You can also use a USB cord and listen to a play list from your smart phone. Can also utilize Bluetooth, with another adapter. Looks good too!

Pros: simple to use

Cons: need an adapter in order to use the Bluetooth feature

Everything you need for the average room

BW from Graham, NC on 8/24/2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I needed a reciever that gave me the versatility to run a simple setup to a moderately advanced one without to high cost. JT produces plenty of sound. A handful of bells and whistles. And has a clean look.

Pros: Easy to setup and quick to figure out.

Cons: None

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

My Onkyo 8050 lasted about 2 years -- just past the warranty period -- and crapped out. I had it repaired by my an Onkyo authorized service dealer (for $250) and it crapped out again about 2 months later. I'm disgusted with Onkyo.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Does what I need it to do. I run Klipsch Heresys on this receiver with no problems. Wireless install was easy, instructions were OK.

Pros: Does it all for a great price.

Cons: One more USB would be nice.

Good features for the price

Hightecker from University City, MO on 6/30/2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great feature set for the price

Pros: Sirius interface, lots of I/O including Zone 2 and pre outs, adequate power.

Cons: Difficult to use remote control/receiver display - get the phone app and operation is intuitive. Requires patience as controls can be sluggish to respond. Analog video inputs are sort of useless given HD video popularity.

Made for me

DD from Florida on 6/29/2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I haven't gotten my turntable out in over twenty years. I'm having a blast with my great sounding LPs and am really happy to be able to connect to my computer to play play lists, albums, and bands. I haven't tried the usb yet but this product is amazing, it's like it was designed personally for me. They could do a little better by adding a blue tooth, but my router is hard wired to the unit, so it was not needed. Also, navigating your computer is logical, but the choices aren't always clear. I'm still learning how to operate the system. I also haven't figured out how zone 2 works. Maybe a video on that would be helpful on the Crutchfield website in the product specs.

Pros: Turn table preamp, connectibility to 2015, easy to understand controls

Cons: Larger than the 29 year old Onkyo it replaced. I hope it lasts as long. Could use some customization EQ beyond treble and bass.

Cons: Can't think of one!

JRJA from Massachusetts on 6/1/2015

Pros: Lots of features and nice quality for price.

Cons: Phono stage not the best.

Great receiver!

Clay from North Carolina on 6/1/2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I've blown out 5 receivers in the past 7 or so years, and wanted a receiver that had enough power and durability to handle loud rock music with plenty of bass. This one fit the bill. I didn't need or want lots of whistles and bells, have any use for 5.1 to make my TV loud, and I like knobs and buttons rather than scrolling through endless menus to perform simple functions. Again, the Onkyo fits the bill. I was referred to it by a Crutchfield service advisor who also has one, and personal experience with a product carries more weight than anything. Plenty or power and great sound, and it doesn't heat up my apartment so much the AC kicks on. Great receiver at a great price.

Pros: Great power handling, clean sound, simple controls. Plenty of inputs, including one for a phonograph. The USB input on the front panel for an iPod or phone is great and being able to use the enclosed remote for this function is a plus.

Cons: None. Bluetooth would be nice instead of having to use an Ethernet cable for a wireless network.

Renman from Florida on 5/19/2015

Ditto to Tom C. in Hawaii 1/15 review---- Have had this unit for about the same amount of time, stopped working for me as well. You have been warned!!

Cons: Internet connection/USB was always spotty. Radio reception poor and odd connection for FM antenna.

I bought another one

Buddy from Atlanta, GA on 5/8/2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

What can I say? I liked this receiver so much I bought another one. (See my review dated Feb 6th, 2014.) I am using this one as a stand alone receiver in a "second system" in a small living room/TV room. It is driving a pair of Pioneer BS-22's (I wish Crutchfield sold these wonderful little speakers). I love all the digital inputs as well as plenty of analog inputs and even a phono input. Typical Onkyo, it is heavy and seems built to last. It has everything you need to be the center-piece of a high quality but affordable 2 channel system.

Pros: Affordable, well built, and flexible.

Cons: Might need an external power amp if you have big speakers.

Onkyo TX-8050

CFF from Illinois on 5/4/2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Wonderful! It is a replacement for a much more expensive receiver, and the quality is outstanding. I was buying this as a gift and didn't know what receiver to buy. Received excellent and speedy advice from Crutchfield. The receiver came quickly and was well packed. So much easier than having to go to a store. I will probably order a turntable from Crutchfield next. Also, I found other reviews about this product helpful in making my final decision.

Pros: Great sound for the money, and easy to set up with our other electronics. Definitely 5 stars.

Cons: Non so far.

Very pleased with this receiver

rjrjr from California on 4/26/2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I'm very happy with this receiver. Great value for the price and quality. For the features this Onkyo receiver offers, I don't think anything else comes close for the price. Would recommend this product to anyone. The staff at Crutchfield was very helpful in answering my questions to narrow down the choices that would fit my needs.

Pros: Features for the price

Cons: No Dolby noise reduction

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was replacing a JVC receiver I had since 1987. For a new receiver it sounds nice. I still love the retro sound that I can have an equalizer running thru the system but this receiver does a nice job with clarity. Nice having an Ethernet connection & a USB port.

Pros: price, Ethernet connection, simple & easy

Cons: not too many

Excellent, minor quibble

Anonymous from Milwaukee, WI on 3/30/2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Treble bias noted at first but seems to have resolved after break in. Very clean and natural sounding. Phono input works great and has similar volume to other inputs. USB input for iPod better option than a dock that can become obsolete if Apple changes output design. Issue: cannot listen to iPod through this receiver's headphone jack. See manual. IPod does not have the power to drive audiophile headphones to their potential.

Rod M from New York on 3/21/2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Sound has treble bias, brilliance over complexity & depth. "Back" layers of sound sometimes muffled & unclear (eg, strings in loud brass passage). Sounds like high overtones are favored over lower overtones & fundamental pitch. Has more features than my old Fisher, but basic sound not as good.

Pros: Remote control an advantage, sound better when music simple (eg, solo piano, small ensemble).

Cons: Sound quality (see above). Like many Microsoft "upgrades," has more features, but performance of basic features not as good.

Nice receiver, but with a few quirks

Bill A from SE Minnesota on 3/18/2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this to replace a working 13 year old basic Sony receiver just to gain the net receiver function. I did not want anything more than 2-channel conventional stereo. The fit, finish, and exterior quality seem to be equal to the Sony, though I miss the bass boost/loudness control. A mid-range control would be a nice addition. I would recommend it to someone else that's not extra picky, but if I were to buy another net-enabled receiver, I might look a little harder at the next more expensive group, including Onkyo. As for Crutchfield, they shipped it quickly at no extra cost.

Pros: Clean styling; gradual volume change as knob is turned - takes more turns to make a big change; plenty of power for the average living room; plenty of inputs including mag. phono; Zone 2 outputs also work as extra line-level output; short power-on delay

Cons: No Loudness Control; keeps disconnecting vTuner stations after an hour or so (does not happen when listening via computer); Net setup instructions are sketchy; seems to generate more heat than comparable receivers - even when in Standby, it's warm.

retro lives!

BOB from Albuquerque,NM on 3/11/2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this receiver for the 4ohm capability, the fm radio, and the sound of the amp. It is a very fine sounding amp with fm and the analog inputs. The treble is a little bright with my speakers but I can adjust it,,what a concept! The sound of the cd input is great with my dac and computer. I would have to spend 2 or 3 times the price to get a small,,and very small difference in sound quality! Very happy with the unit and as always,Crutchfield's reliable service. 4ohm speakers are not a bother to this nice receiver!

Pros: Great sound for the money. 5 star rating!

Cons: none for me

It meets all of my needs. Before I got it I used my Yamaha rx-v475 in 2 channel mode putting out the same wattage and the Onkyo sounds better with the same speakers.

Pros: Good power, good sound, and great value as I got it on sale.

Cons: No HDMI port to use my Blu-Ray player to stream DSD/SACD.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Read all the instructions! I was able to connect to internet, and PC for stored tunes. Good: sound is great! remote, tone controls, all great! Best feature: 'Pure Audio' button switches all other stuff off, like the display, and I can hear nuances in voices; recommend this !! Radio, phono input work fine..... connections are best with bananas. Instructions for PC interface need a tune up, since it takes some effort to learn it, oh well. Hence the 4 rating, else, a 5 star. Really. Listening to it now, a keeper. And I would definitely get this again. Crutchfield shops quickly. Packing is very good. Okay, changing it to 5 star... :)

Pros: Controls, Display, Power, connections, phono input (yes turntable), Great unit!! No going back to my previous unit...

Cons: Interface to PC, Internet radio is not easy...wish it would be easier, that's all, really, all else is great!!!

Well designed, easy to use, excellent quality. I purchased the Onkyo TX 8050 from Crutchfield about one month ago to replace an Onkyo 8011 after ten years of excellent service. I replaced the old unit because I wanted more power and went back to Onkyo because of my satisfaction with the 8011. I use it only to listen to CD's and the cd direct mode is an excellent feature. I recomend this product highly

Pros: Well designed, easy to use excellent quality

Cons: None that I have found

This unit works great, is easy to use, has an input for my turntable, an optical input for my TV, RCA jacks for all my other old Onkyo decks and players. The FM tuner is greatly improved over my 30 year Onkyo Receiver that this unit replaces. I'm live in a remote area and I am are picking up stations I didn't know were there.

Pros: price, performance, ease to use

Cons: none

Very clean and smooth sounding receiver. Has all technology for ipods, wifi, satalite radio and yet can still hook up a turn table. When using A and B speaker output you do mot staver the reciever for power like many other recievers when both outputs are used.

Pros: A really great reciever for the price.

Nice Sound At a Nice Price!

McLou from Clayton, WA on 1/24/2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I'm a few mouths into this stereo receiver and I must say it's a pretty nice sounding unit. At first, I wasn't overly impressed but still sounded great. I decided to pick up a pair of Polk Audio Monitor 40 Series II speakers. Very nice! All my music is located on my computer using FLAC files with the ASUS Xonar Essence STX sound card. This is a decent sound card for playing music from your computer, it's geared towards stereo sound and does a great job with good software. Currently I'm using AIMP3 and Foobar2000. I have to admit the unit sounds great with the Polk Monitor 40's at low volumes. Once turned up the bass does roll off. Adding a Polk PSW10 sub woofer certainly solves that problem. If you're one that likes your furniture nailed down you may want to go with a bigger and more powerful sub but the PSW10 works very nicely with nice tight bass. Now, I decided to pick up another pair of Polk Monitor 40's! Oh yeah, even better! Seems to add a wider range to the music, big difference to my ears. The network stuff I don't use and couldn't care less, wish I dropped the extra 200.00 for the Yamaha R-S700BL. I'm sure in time I'll grab the the Yamaha but for now the Onkyo TX-8050 works just nicely! Oh, one more thing, these Polk Monitor 40's sound better and better as the days go by. Once broke in these speakers do perform very well for the person that likes to listen to music at normal volume levels. However, I do love my Sansui AU-717!!

Pros: If you're looking for nice sound to play through your computer this unit works well! With some EQ magic and a few plugins, one can get a nice sweet sound! But as said above I love my Sansui AU-717.

Cons: Only thing I didn't like about this unit was the USB Flash Drive. Although it works just perfect, it does lack many features! No Replaygain or Gapless playback. Not a big deal for me as I use my computer for all my music. Using ASIO works well for those that wish to use the hardware directly (sound card). I like to think of it as an enhanced source!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Only a couple of weeks experience with this Onkyo TX-8050 receiver, but so far extremely satisfied with every aspect of the performance. Easy to setup, and sounds great in the environment where it is located. Controls are straight forward and simple to use. We chose to pair this receiver with Polk TSi 100 bookshelf speakers and are very happy with the sound provided by this setup. Plenty of "punch" to the base so we haven't yet connected a powered base to the system.

Pros: Good price. Easy to figure out connections, great modern looks, and simple to use controls.

Cons: I have to agree with reviewer Jay L. Virginia when it comes to the instruction manual and user guide. Onkyo has provided very poorly written and difficult to easily understand directions and descriptions of the various aspects of setting up and operating this system.

Onkyo TX-8050

Jay L. from Virginia on 1/22/2015

Very well packaged and easily configured. The only negative is the manual. It assumes a sophisticated audio owner with its terminology and is quite unclear on how to operate an ipod through the unit. Manuals should be written for the least knowledgeable user; this one was not. Having said that the receiver is excellent in quality and operation.

Pros: Sound quality is excellent

Cons: Manual could be better

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

As some of the other reviewers wrote, this is a replacement for an old Onkyo receiver. I was always happy with that receiver but I started having a few problems with it. This new one has features that didn't exist when I bought the old one: USB port, WiFi using a USB adapter, Bluetooth using a USB adapter and a digital optical connection for my CD player. It also has phono inputs for our turntable, which some of the new receivers don't have. I paired this receiver with a pair of Bose 201 speakers. This is a great combination - very clean sound. There is no sub-woofer but it really isn't needed, unless you really want the "boom-boom". The 201's, with the base on the tuner turned to about 3/4, provides just the right amount of base for my ear.

Pros: All around great performance at a reasonable price.

Cons: None that I have found.

For the money, this is a great piece of equipment. It replaced a 20 year-old Onkyo receiver that was having some issues. Wanted a stereo receiver because the room is not organized well for an A/V receiver (Samsung soundbar from Crutchfield a few years ago for TV sound). Love the sound, and the inputs are very easy to select, especially using the remote. Highly recommend.

Pros: Price Great sound Easy setup phono connection

Cons: None

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I replaced a 30 year old Onkyo receiver with this one and absolutely love it. The reception is so good that I pick up stations I've never heard. The sound is excellent too. Having a second zone was my primary reason for getting a new receiver so that I could keep the outdoor speakers shut off or the volume low. I used my old receiver as the amp for zone 2 and it works great. This receiver is one of the best purchases I made in a long time and I'm very happy I did so.

Pros: A+ quality at a very good price.

Eureka! A new receiver that allows me to get my favorite FM station! It used to be 50,000 watts but now is just 600 watts, with a repeater station (closer to me) at about 250 watts. My old (Pioneer SX_6) was fine until the station changed frequency and reduced power. NOW, it's crystal clear, silent during silences and all of the other functions such as CD, tape and phono work just as well. Thanks, Onkyo and Crutchfield! I have not yet mastered the internet gadget but I will be working on it one of these days.

When I hesitated about buying a Yamaha receiver with a Yamaha CD player because sticker shock had become a big concern. Easy to set up, good looking, and does its job very well.

I like everything about this receiver. The only con is that the am/fm tuner is not especially good at receiving stations further away from my location, unlike my previous stand-alone tuner. Pros: Sound is excellent. Internet connection with my USB adaptor is working with no problems.

Great receiver for the money

Dave from Central NJ on 7/29/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this receiver for its internet connectivity and sound quality. The sound quality is great and the tuner seems plenty sensitive with a decent antenna attached (not the tiny one that comes with it). It works with a large number of internet services, including siriusXM (14 day free trial included), vTuner, Pandora, Rhapsody, Last,fm, Slacker, Mediafly, and Aupeo. In addition, it can play from your ipod if you connect it to the USB port, and with the free app, it can play songs stored on your smart phone. The remote control is decent for what it is, but with so many features, the remote and the small front screen display aren't really enough (note that I don't have it connected to a TV - maybe it has on-screen menus that are better). So I primarily use the Android app to control it. A really nice advantage of the app is that I can keep the receiver in a closet completely out of sight. Unfortunately, the app is lacking. It has difficulty reconnecting to the receiver, and navigating is mysterious. For example, it has it's own "back" button that works differently from the one built into the phone. Sometimes it will show you what's currently playing and sometimes it won't. Either way, once you start playing an internet service, there's no way I've found to know which one you're currently using. So I'm knocking it down 1 star because of the app. Otherwise I'd give it a solid 5. Still, for the price, I can live with the app and hope that Onkyo makes a better app someday.

Pros: Excellent sound, great internet connectivity.

Cons: Very mediocre smartphone app for remote control.

Big Bang for your buck!!!

The TX-8050 is a pleasant surprise. I was impressed by the internet option as well as the usb option which allows me to use my ipod. The sound quality is really great, and I am fully satisfied so far (have only owned it for two weeks). The TX-8050 is fairly easy to figure out and the manual is very helpful for things I can't figure out intuitively.

Pros: Sounds great, fairly intuitive, has a host of audio options, not to mention the video options I have yet to explore.

Cons: Bass is a little disappointing; especially when compared with the audio receivers of the past, which is why I rated the TX-8050 four stars instead five.

MarkP from Kansas City, MO on 6/12/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have owned this unit for 2-1/2 years. Overall, I am not unhappy with the functionality of the product. Streams music over my network and the internet successfully, plays FM and AM when I want it, sound quality is decent. A little unstable about staying connected to my network. It needs to be restarted periodically. My real beef is that it has now stopped working for no apparent reason. Have been through what remedies are available to no avail. To ship it to a repair facility in MI, pay the diagnostic fee and ship it back will be 1/2 the cost of new unit. By the time it is diagnosed and repaired, you could buy a new unit. I understand that electronics can be fickle. Just may want to consider another manufacturer besides Onkyo.

My high-end tuner of days gone by was in sorry shape. I did not need any of the tuners that feature multiple HDMI inputs and other digital features but could find nothing else until I checked Crutchfield. I am very pleased with the features the TX 8050 offers, its quality audio and its affordable price.

Pros: Great features, including several audio settings. The USB adaptor well worth the extra price over the base model.Overall, well worth the cost.

Cons: Awkward to use with the companion Network USB adaptor.

Patrick from Wyoming on 6/8/2014

This unit replaces a 5 channel home theater system and it sounds great, despite having fewer watts per channel. It seems to work fine for movies, but it really shines when playing music which I do 95% of the time. The Pandora radio is a really nice feature with its commercial free music and it sounds excellent. The Pandora is a free service and so far, I haven't seen the need to access the paid radio services such as XM radio.

Pros: Inexpensive price. Internet radio. music playback and quality sound. relatively easy set-up when running cable directly from router to back of receiver.

Cons: AM and FM reception is not the best, but perhaps it has something to do with where I live. Sometimes the internet radio displays a false message that the internet server is malfunctioning, but generally exiting from the internet connection and then restarting it solves the problem.

I was interested in the phono, CD. and tuner sections of this receiver. Teamed up with a H.K. turntable, At 440Ml cartridge a Onkyo DX 7555 Cd player and JBL Northridge Stadium speaker system. I have pushed this 80 watt receiver very hard risking the top end of my speakers. I was never disappointed at the lean music it delivered. After considerable listening time I have concluded this stereo receiver is what I would consider a great bang for the buck. I know there are better receivers that can be purchased. However. considering cost VS features and solid sound. You can't go wrong.

Pros: Very solid bass. Clean sound. tuner is adequate. Lots of additional inputs.

Cons: I have none to offer.

:Background: I primarily watch movies and also listen to music via my smartphone. After countless research and with the help of Crutchfield support I ended up purchasing the Onkyo TX-8050. :Listening Area: The room this receiver is installed in is approximately 12'x14'. The viewing distance for movies is around 8' and for the music it varies. I connected an optical digital audio cable into the television; a subwoofer cable to my subwoofer; two speakers; the included FM antenna and the Onkyo UWF-1 Wi-Fi USB Adapter. TV: I have a Samsung 22" LCD television. Speakers: Infinity P153s. Subwoofer: Infinity Primus PS38. Smartphone: iPhone 4 with iOS 6.1. :Onkyo UWF-1 Setup: Due to character limitations, I took this section over to the UWF-1 section. Overall I love this accessory. :Sound Quality: Everything sounds fantastic for my setup. The max volume is 82. It has plenty of power and there has been no distortion whatsoever. It drives the Infinity speakers without any problems. :Other Thoughts: I used banana plugs to connect the speaker wires into the back of the receiver. I had no problems fitting the plugs into the terminals. The knobs feel great too, smooth turning. I hope I covered all basis. I didnt want to reiterate anything said on the product description page. I also wanted to be thorough as possible so that if someone has a similar setup that they might be able to relate and have this be helpful. Overall, I absolutely enjoy the TX-8050.

Pros: Sound Features Wifi/Network option App integration Doesn't get too hot (with proper ventilation) Clean overall look

Cons: Not crazy that you need a premium account to stream other online music services.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The receiver sounds great, but the sole reason for my purchase was to use my iPad to control Pandora via the advertised WIFI connection. I guess I should have gone on the Internet and read the reviews of this function and I would have realized it doesn't function at all. What a disappointment, here I have installed a sound system in my house based on using this unit to allow me to control music wirelessly and I'm back to plugging it in. It's not Crutchfields fault, its the Onkyo application that doesn't work. It opens then crashes. I'm not the only one, every review online states the same thing. I'm pretty bummed. Now I'm planning on scrapping this unit all together and going shopping again for one that has this feature that works. Totally disappointed.

Pros: Good sound, quality construction.

Cons: Wireless app does not function. Therefore, its just a stereo unit.

Big plus for internet connection from south central WI on 2/12/2014

I've had this receiver for about 22 months. Network ready was the selling point for me. $$ also mattered at the time. I have this hooked up with PSB Stratus Bronze speakers. The mid and low bass lack definition and tend to sound a tad "muddled" although passable in my opinion. Perhaps that is why Onkyo include pre outs to connect a power amp. I picked up a gently used Parasound power amp rated at 125w/ch @ 4 ohms which matches the PSB's. The difference in the quality of sound is quite good. I'm not a bass freak, I just like it tight and well defined and the Parasound does the trick. For $299.95 and network ready this is a decent buy. I've bought from Crutchfield many times since 1978 and when it comes to customer service they are simply the best there is!.

Pros: Network ready and pre out. Firmware update via network.

Cons: Amplifier (somewhat)

Great flexibility and great value

Buddy from Atlanta, GA on 2/6/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I love the large number of analog and digital inputs which allow a lot of flexibility for music, movies, or watching the game. It even has a phono input so I can play my old vinyl. The feature that sold me was the pre-out jacks which allow you to add an external power amp. No disrespect to onkyo, but I suspected the power amp section of a receiver at this price would be a little underwhelming and I was right. While it has plenty of power for most people and most speakers (it will even drive 4 ohm speakers), my man cave is a fairly large room and I have floorstanding speakers (PSB Alpha T1's) so I broke out my old NAD 320BEE and hooked it up as a power amp. The initial set-up was quick and easy. (Full disclosure: I have not yet attempted to use the internet based features which i hear can be complex.) I am a long time fan of onkyo equipment, and the 8050 certainly appears to have that onkyo build quality. It is heavy and solid, and all of the buttons and nobs operate smoothly. Bottom line: for the price, this thing has so many options, capabilities, and onkyo quality that I couldn't not buy it.

Pros: Flexibility and connectivity plus Onkyo quality.

Cons: None really. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is the slightly underwhelming power.

Onkyo TX-8050

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Very satisfied with this product. We recently moved into a home with whole-house audio speakers--I didn't own a receiver that could drive these, and wasn't looking to spend a lot. The Crutchfield representative helped me find this unit. Delivery was prompt and it was in good condition. Setup was very intuitive. I'm using a Niles switch (also purchased from Crutchfield) to distribute the output to five zones of speakers. The the sound quality over the installed speakers meets our needs; I wasn't looking for audiophile quality but this exceeded my expectations. I'd expected to spend a good bit more money to make use of the installed sound in our new home, finding this unit was a nice surprise. The only downside (for me) is not a function of the unit. One speaker set is outside, and to drive it I need to crank the inside volume pretty loud. Luckily, the Crutchfield representative anticipated this for me, and pointed out the preamp output, so I can drive those speakers with a separate amp--problem solved.

Pros: Price, quality, ease of setup, large number of input options.

Cons: None

Excellent stereo, love it.

Victor from Pasadena, CA on 12/27/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this onkyo tx 8050 'stereo' (as opposed to home theater A/V receiver) to replace a 33 year old yamaha stereo receiver (you can guess my age and economic conservatism). I love this receiver (with the exceptions listed below). In no time I had it connected to my old vinyl phono player, to my Pandora internet radio account, to my wife's ipod nano, and to our CD and tape players. Works beautifully with all, sound is excellent, power is good for my living room and asjacent rooms. Controls on the recevier are well laid out, and the remote works well. OK, nothing is perfect, so here the minuses: a) the remote does not controll all the features in the receiver, for example, no bass/treble/balance controls (on the other hand, it might become too cumbersome if it included everything, so this may be viewed as positive); b) the onkyo remote app for android and iphone seems, as one reviewer aptly put it, writen by grandpa with the grandkid's computer; it is illogical ('net' means 'source' = 'input' in one page, but it means 'internet' in the next one), of limited functionality (example, it lists the music pieces in my phone, and lets me play them, but not those of the current input device); on the other hand it is the only way to read (from a distance) what is currently playing; c) oremote for iphone ($5) is slightly better, but has many non-functioning controls on this model, while more logically laid out than Onkyo remote, it does not have much more functionality.

Pros: great sound, great versatility, relatively easy to use remote. Crutchfield's excellent help and service.

Cons: only the abominable but necessary app.

Simply Amazing

This receiver is simply amazing! I connected this to a pair of Kenwood 777d speakers and a network cable and plugged in. I had no problems with the networking functions sound quality and clarity are impeccable, simple controls make it a breeze to setup.

Pros: easy setup great sound great support for various types of device connections overall an excellent stereo receiver

Cons: manual is poorly written(not really needed though)

This reciever is a great option for a dual zone application. It has a very nice app to control from your device. However without the app the control is a little difficult as the display does not show what is going on with zone 2. The app is a must have for ease of 2 zone control

Pros: price and functions

Cons: zone 2 control

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased the TX8050 from Crutchfield and tried it briefly out of the box. A few months later when I finally got around to installing the reviver in its permanent home the 8050 would completely turn off after about 5 seconds. I tried to remedy the situation by plugging the 8050 into other outlets etc. but nothing worked. I called Crutchfield and spoke with RJ in tech support. After a quick diagnostic check he determined the 8050 was defective. He said I was out of my 60 day return, but he and Crutchfield stood behind the product and sent another 8050 out immediately. Customer service means so much, Crutchfield has me as a customer for life. Thanks!!!!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought the Onkyo TX 8050 mainly to access internet radio in a second system in my living room. I've owned extremely expensive amps/preamps in my life and wasn't expecting "high end" sound from the 8050. I was quite shocked at how clean and powerful this unit sounded. I am also extremely happy with all the other features the 8050 has. My Pandora comes in extremely well. The tuner actually does a very good job with local radio. I bought this from Crutchfield because of their legendary customer service. When I was setting this unit up I needed some tech support and Crutchfield did not disappoint. This was a 5 star purchase..I'm very happy with the Onkyo TX 8050 and very happy I purchased it from Crutchfield.

Pros: Great unit-simple to navigate all the features-great sound-great customer service-fast shipping.

Cons: None

Needed to replace a much older Onkyo receiver. With the help of a Crutchfield customer rep I decided on the TX-8050. I was looking to keep the sound I am used to while being able to add components like TV, iPod. This unit comes very close in sound to what I was replacing. It is crystal clear and w/ the right amount of power. The price is right and the quality is superb.

Pros: Clarity, power, easy hook up of components and speakers.

Cons: No longer made in Japan.

Clunky operation

Lincoln from Fort Worth, Tx on 7/24/2013

I purchased this receiver because of the network capabilities (mostly for Pandora) and the fact that I can control it with an iPhone App. I use this to power a pair of speakers on my roof terrace, the recvr is 2 floors down in my living room so the App working correctly is a must...the problem is the App doesn't work well at all. I even purchased the MUCH BETTER non-Onkyo App (oRemote) but one major problem still remains and makes this setup NOT USEFUL for me. The problem is that you cannot turn the recvr ON from the app, this is the second most important function for a system that is not nearby, The second major problem (solved by the oRemote App) is that to use internet radio/pandora functions with this recvr it MUST be hooked up to a display or you cannot tell what you doing (this is idiotic for stereo recvr!!!). The Onkyo app displays "see TV", the oRemote app displays what would show on the TV screen and it works only about 90% of the time. A better setup would be a Grace tuner (their app works flawlessly) and a non-networked recvr or maybe the new Marantz stereo network recvrs will be better (they are twice the price)...either way this Onkyo is going in the trash SOON!!!

Pros: none

Cons: too many to list

Excellent Value for Stereo Receiver!

TimH from Houston, TX on 7/18/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I recently purchased this excellent stereo receiver from Onkyo. I had looked at a few years ago when purchasing an Onkyo home theater receiver. I had also reviewed other stereo receivers on Crutchfield site. This is not an audiophile grade receiver but still an excellent value for a standard audio/video stereo receiver with a phono input, network capability, iPod and other connections. Very clean power - driving a pair of JBL Studio Monitor 4408A's. Plenty of volume for our front computer room. We can play records, CD's, radio, iPod and we can play internet radio. Interesting free internet channels but already subscribed to Rhapsody. The receiver connected to Rhapsody with no issues AFTER we figured out the character menu display to enter the username and password. Other reviews have stated they lose connection and need to turn off-on to connect again. This does occasionally occur but it does connect again without entering ID again. Not a big issue to us but I agree should be a better connection. Plenty of connections for old VCR's and Laserdisc. I plan to dub down old tapes and discs to a stand alone DVD recorder. I have not tried this yet. Wireless connection would have been nice but again this is an older model and placed near internet connection. Onkyo may update on next model, if they do continue the stereo receiver line! If you are looking for standard stereo receiver, I would definitely recommend this receiver. Crutchfield service was excellent.

Pros: Plenty of Power, Easy Gold Plated Connections, Phono, Network and iPod Connections, Different Audio Processors or Direct Mode, Digital Inputs

Cons: Manual, A few quirks - cannot use headphones with iPod connected and a few system changes can only be used with the included remote control. Normally, this should not be an issue, BUT if the remote control stops working, I would like the option to change on the receiver front panel. Most other system changes can be made on the front panel.

Pros: Tremendous Value

Cons: Such a good value it is easy to convince yourself that you "need" something "better."

I had no idea what to get after a power surge destroyed my 25-year-old Denon stereo. I called Crutchfield's and spoke with Rocky. I explained to him that I like to listen to talk radio on AM, listen to music on FM, and play CDs. I would also like to be able to use my iPod, I told him. He immediately knew that the Onkyo TX-8050 was going to be exactly what I needed....and he was right! It's simply perfect! Crutchfield's is the best! I appreciate the fact that Crutchfield's people are so knowledgeable and that their recommendations are based on the customer's need rather than the amount of the sale. Thank you!

Pros: ..simple set-up and connection to other components and speakers; uncomplicated controls; attractive design; GREAT sound!

Cons: none!

I was looking for another docking system and the staff at Crutchfield discussed the space I had and what I expected to hear from a music source. This receiver is the backbone of my new system and I love it. It does everything I could hope for and is capable of more.

Pros: Easy set up - great instructions and support. I never knew that iPod could sound so good. I love that know I can add turntable, cd player if I choose.

Cons: The binding posts for the speaker wire are a little tricky and you have to be careful and make sure they are tight. I wish they matched the speaker connections. Minor - compared to PROS.

Cons: No wi-fi. Ethernet connection for use with Web music services. (However, it's easy to stream Pandora, etc. through iPhone/iPod Touch.)

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased this on the recommendation of Crutchfield Advisor (thanks Lucy). I have a Denon AVR-1508 that we wanted to use for a home theater in our basement. I needed a receiver that wasn't a home theater, basic functions, phono input, iPod capable, etc. Set up was easy, firmware was up to date and the sound is better than the Denon (which I was using as a stereo receiver only). Be sure to download the Oremote app, it is worth the price. I can control the TX-8050 from anywhere my wifi reaches.

Pros: Crutchfield service (no surprise there), ease of setup, sound quality, price. A good receiver for those who don't need the home theater option.

Cons: None really. I would like a third set of speaker connections as I have 3 rooms with speakers. Easily solved with a speaker selector switch.

Onkyo TX-8050 Workhorse !!

James D from Las Vegas, NV on 4/25/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this receiver to reside in my TV stand where it will be required to, process cable box audio, process streaming audio from the internet, process audio from an analog CD player and process audio from my off air HD video antenna. This receiver performs all of the above duties flawlessly. This is one very quiet receiver .. absolutely silent. The fidelity is exceptional, audio range excellent and the clarity is terrific. This unit makes an excellent stereo playback signal when wired to quality floor standing towers. This clean, extremely musical signal is backed up with plenty of power to easily fulfill any audio spikes that makes listening to music and movie soundtracks very dynamic. I would categorize this box as a Workhorse with real precision and style. The connectivity is the best I've ever seen in any stereo receiver. This is truly a stereo receiver for the modern age. One thing to be aware of ... this receiver will only process a PCM format signal from the optical inputs. I patched my cable box via an optical cord directly to this receiver, and the sound is fantastic. However, in order to export the audio from an off air HD signal, you must patch from the TV optical out .. so make sure that your Television optical out is switchable to a PCM format, otherwise no audio. I would consider this box a great value at $400.00 ... for under $300.00 it's a steal. I highly recommend this box .. It really is a dandy!

Pros: This box does it all very well .. And you can buy it for under $300.00

Cons: Absolutely none!

It's hard to find a decent audio only receiver at a decent price. This fills the bill much to my liking. I got this for my garage & garden. Since I live out in the sticks, pulling in radio stations is limited. With this, I can receive Pandora and about 5 other internet services crystal clear without having to keep the computer on. Also, if you like you can pull in, just about any radio station in the world without signing up for anything. I absolutely love this receiver! My only negative is the lack of directions. You're pretty much left to yourself figuring out how to set it up for your internet services. Once you have it set up, you're done. Next time you turn it on; you don't have to set it up again. If you're somewhat competent with a computer, you will figure it out though.

Pros: Does exactly what I was looking for!

Cons: Lack of directions

I bought this to drive a pair of Polk Lsi15 (4 ohm) speakers. The hardest part was getting it out of the box, but ten minutes afterwards I heard the Polks. We also have a Yamaha home theater receiver, which was quite a burden to set up compared to this 2 channel only receiver. The sound quality is good, but these speakers will eventually need a much higher rated amplifier. As for the USB dongle, it was difficult to setup, the instructions are poor, and even once we got it working I found it hard to use, so it went back to Crutchfield. The receiver itself is very good, easy to use, and has many useful features without the unnecessary hassle of the 5 or 7 channel setup. I would buy another in a minute, but we have too much gear as it is.

Great stereo receiver

JPL from CHS, SC on 3/7/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this receiver specifically for the ability to connect my iphone 4S via the USB port. I had been using RCA patchcords to connect to my old receiver which was far from ideal. An unexpected plus was that this new receiver's remote control actually works with the iphone 4S, which I did not expect. This eliminates the need for the optional ipod/iphone dock. I plan to download all of my music to flash drives to play via the receiver's USB port. This unit replaces a 14+ yr. old Onkyo that still works and sounds as good as the day I bought it from Crutchfield. I have not yet tried to stream any music (e.g. Pandora) via ethernet or wireless adaptor. All in all, this receiver is an excellent value for someone looking for a quality stereo (not A/V) receiver with lots of useful options.

Pros: Onkyo quality, USB port, input for turntable. Options for Pure, Direct and Enhanced processing of digital input. Very good FM tuner (much better than the receiver it replaced).

Cons: Markings for dials and knobs are next to impossible to read against the black background of the receiver. No switched electrical outlets on rear of receiver (for attaching powered antenna, etc.)

Got it a week ago and finally found some time to get it out of the box ... easy set-up, not being an ICT expert, I was able to hook it up to my wireless home network in no time (using the wireless adapter via the usb-port) and listen to plenty of radio stations; downloaded the android app and again connected in just seconds :-) ! streaming works as it should. It takes a bit getting used to the two line display to set it up but once you've got the hang of it - no problem. The sound is already pretty impressive being hooked up to my old speakers; still awaiting delivery of my Focals 706v ... should be any day now, can't wait!

Pros: Good amp with enough power including network functionality at an affordable price!

Cons: Two line display - other than that, great thus far!

This unit was recommended as a replacement for a 110 RMS/channel Technics receiver which appeared to be failing. It has a few features that the Technics did not have like a USB input on the face. It is ok but presents 2 problems for me one more serious than the other. It appears underpowered to push a pair of original 901s which are power hogs but brilliant. the sound appears less brilliant now than it did with the 110 watt technic when it was working. I don't know if there is a good alternative but I am less than thrilled with the sound. Problem 2 is that these circa 1969 Bose come with an equlizer with no on/off switch that had plugged into the un-switched power receptacle built into the back of the Technic and its 2 predecessor amplifiers and receivers. the ONkyo does not have one so I am stuck with plugging and unplgging the equalizer into the power strip each time I use the unit.

Pros: convenient features

Cons: underpowered for this application and no electical power in plug

It is a solid and beautifully crafted receiver and came well packaged with no damage whatsoever, which is remarkable given that it came via ground shipping across the country. It seemed like it took a while to get here but hey, it came all the way to Hawaii for FREE so no big deal. I have it connected to a pair of Bose 201's and it powers them well- clear and well balanced sound. I have also connected it to my HDTV via the optical connection and it sounds great for movies and games without having to find a place for 6 speakers and the wires to go with them. Keep in mind I have a small place and I'm going from TV only audio so it's perfect for me. I really like that with the gazillion inputs, features, and capabilities of this receiver, I can build my home audio system a little at a time as my budget allows, and with an emphasis on music not having an obnoxious home theater system. I only hope it survives for 25+ years like my Dad's old Onkyo, but with their quality, I'm sure it will. If you are reading this review, buy this receiver and you will NOT be disappointed! Thanks Crutchfield for your rock-solid service and support.

Pros: Tons of features and capability, great sound, solid quality

Cons: The only minor con is it is missing an aux input mini-jack for portable mp3 players

Onkyo TX-8050

I called Crutchfield to let them know it was time to upgrade from my 16 year old Panasonic receiver. I purchased an Internet connected Panasonic TV a few years ago and had no way to send its audio through my old machine, as the TV outputs are only HDMI and optical digital. Crutchfield advised this Onkyo unit as I only wish to power 2 speakers. The box arrived promptly and, armed with an overpriced optical digital cable from my local "Shack," I set up the Onkyo. Loved the Internet radio. Other components (game system, CD player, DVD player) all worked fine. Had no trouble getting things running, except no sound from the TV. Turned off the TV speakers and reprogrammed the assignable optical port, as per instructions. No dice. Called Crutchfield, who advised I had done everything correctly. Finally invited some engineer friends over, who researched that the Onkyo is not compatible with Dolby sound, which is what my TV was sending out. I was left with no other choice but to return it and select a different device with HDMI ports. Crutchfield service was spectacular as usual. My recommendation to others considering this unit is to know its limitations. I appreciated its simplicity as I am not a major audio gearhead, but it turned out to be too simple (no HDMI) for my needs.

Pros: Simple, great Internet radio options, front USB port

Cons: Limited inputs and compatibility with some components

Solid Receiver

Good solid receiver. Easy to set up. Plenty of options for input. I bought this primarily to listen to internet radio and play the music stored on my home server. The TX-8050 can do this just fine, but you end up using its tiny display. What we ultimately end up doing is plugging in an iPad via the dock or a phone or tablet via the analog inputs for easier control and navigation. The receiver drives a couple of Inifinity Primus P163 shelf speakers 60 ft. away in the living room and feeds another older Onkyo HT-R530 surround sound receiver in the TV room. The sound and the power are just fine for our purposes and you really don't notice the difference between the 8050's DAC vs. the using phone/tablet's.

Pros: Everything as advertised. Good, solid internet-ready receiver. Great price.

Cons: Small display.

This exactly what I needed. I needed help with my purchase, and my advisor, Ann, was fantastic! I needed a reasonably priced receiver to listen to Pandora on in my small office.

Pros: Super easy set up. Great internet capability for the basic user.

Cons: The manual / website isn't as specific as it could be regarding setting product up with internet radio.

A great simple stereo receiver. All I needed was something to play 2 pairs of speakers from Serious radio source. This unit is exactly what I wanted and it performs well.

Pros: Can be used without a remote control.

Cons: None

... and great FM reception!

This 8050 replaces an old dead amp the ran my five sets of speakers through a Niles speaker selector for the last 30 years. The 8050 set up fast, and does everything I wanted it to do -- which is not much. Crutchfield was helpful in pointing me to this for its clean power at 4 ohms. I took months and many chats before finally pulling the trigger. Figure we will mostly run music off an iPhone through iTunes and Pandora on the phone. (Location of the 8050 makes ethernet a pain and I don't real see the need for wifi since we have an old iPhone that we have dedicated to this baby). This 8050 is perfect for using a smart phone directly. I upgraded to Pandora One and the sound is very good. This system is mostly used by us for background music and not for careful discriminating listening. Even so, I can tell it drives my simple speakers very well and the sound is wonderful at low and high volumes. What I did not expect was wonderful FM reception. I simply plugged in the little white antennae and we get great reception. This was not possible with any radios or other receivers. Only or Tivoli radio gets reception -- until this wonder boy. I've tried fancy external antenna and even put a huge one in the basement -- all will limited to no success over the last 30 years. We are in a suburban dead zone for radio and cell phone reception. Now, this pulls in every station clean as can be. I loves me some NPR when cooking in the kitchen and enjoyed it for hours Thanksgiving morning

Pros: Clean power at 4 ohms lets you run a speaker selector with many pairs. More than enough power for 5 sets of speakers usb with direct control of your smartphone from the phone if you wish GREAT FM RECEPTION

Cons: if using wifi adaptor, you give up having a free usb port for your iPhone

Great in Home system

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Bought this to power a whole-house audio system. Six pair of speakers, run through a Niles speaker selector. I control it via the Onkyo Android App, and it works great. I have access to the music on my phone, on my computer, as well as internet and conventional radio. The setup, with the wi-fi adapter, was a snap, and I have the music I want anywhere in the house. A great bargain.

Pros: Easy setup. Lots of flexibility

Cons: a small point, but the speaker connectors are close together, making it a bit of a challenge to feed the wires in.

Its hard to find JUST a stereo receiver nowadays, most of what's available are a/v receivers with 5, 7 or even 9 channels of amplification.that being said this is a great received AND its net ready.this is a high current amp and its 100 watts per channel if you use 6 ohm speakers(80 per channel with 8 ohm speakers).this is just a really solid stereo receiver with great power and sound.remember to buy components suited to your needs and expectations, you don't need to buy 7 channels of amplification when u can get just the 2 ya need for almost half the price.crutch field service rocks by the way.

Pros: High current amp. Net ready. Half the price of fancy a/v receivers.

Cons: some people have said the dongle for net capability is hard to set up although I found it to be fairly intuitive and set it up easily.( now the wife and I do have pretty quick and modern high speed wireless internet so difficulty may vary between users).

Perfect for background music in business

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

We set this up in our new business and it is perfect. We can use the available onkyo app to control the inputs and can access our various online music accounts through the direct internet connection. We did not opt for the wireless connector but know that is an option if we ever need it.

Pros: Easy set up, direct internet input, wireless option

Cons: none

More Features and Performance For The Money

Scott H from Pisgah Forest, NC on 10/8/2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

My first experience with a network receiver. I wasn't sure what to expect with both the set up and performance. With lots of phone calls for help from the folks at Crutchfield, I chose the Onkyo TX-8050. I was looking for a compact, yet powerful receiver that could power my Definitive outdoor speakers at the end of 100' of speaker wire as well as A & B selector to switch to my office speakers. Set up was pretty easy. Just read the directions. The sound to my Definitive speakers is great! The ability to connect to Sirius/XM, Pandora, Rhapsody, etc is much more valuable than I thought it would be. Just enter your account info and it's stored and ready to go next time you turn on your Onkyo. My wife loves it cuz it's simple and no need for other components. The only downside is that it won't network with my Mac. Only Windows PC's. Oh well. I connected directly to my Mac and can run iTunes through my DAC. Overall, for the money, this receiver is a great buy!

Pros: Great clean power. Lots of features. Compact size.

Cons: Doesn't network with Mac

Solid unit with extensive features

JeffS from Suffern, NY on 10/4/2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I needed a basic high quality receiver to use with an iPad/iPhone for music. The USB connection is a great feature since the DA converter in the Onkyo is superior to the headphone jack on the iPad/phone. Amazing how many features can be included for the price of this receiver. Real solid performer.

Pros: Solid value and performance

Nice basic receiver

jake47 from Cape Cod, MA on 9/9/2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I got this receiver to replace an extremely old Pioneer. It is not being used to its full potential but I needed a good basic machine for routine everydday use in general living area (no high end or new audio equipment). Hook-up was straightforward with a fair description in the owner's manual. I am not a high-end audiophile! It is doing a great job and affords me more options than it is likely to be used for in its current location. Plenty of "room" for expansion.

Pros: Sounds great. The manual is reasonably descriptive. Provides plenty of options for hooking up most audio sources.

Cons: Labels on the face of the receiver are not very legible.
