Got newest model due to damage from lightning to my previous Onkyo. This model, which is a couple years newer, has significant features and upgrades that make it a meaningful improvement. I like the internet capability built-in to it. The sound quality and ease of use are a major improvement. It handles all my components with no problem. Overall the best receiver I have ever had.

Pros: Quality and ease of use

    Cons: cannot think of any

I have always been a big fan of Onkyo. I am impressed with this receiver. Sound and ease of use is a plus with this receiver. Wifi set up is easy and utilization of zone 2 for my outdoor speakers is a positive element of this receiver.

Pros: Quality, Ease of use, sound, power, Bluetooth and wifi

Cons: Wish the remote was back lit.

    Great, Sleek, Awesome Features

I'm happy with my Onkyo NR626. I purchased this specifically for the phono input, and am pleased with all the other features it has. I especially like the wifi and the built in Pandora for music listening. It has 7.2 capabilities, but I am only running 5.1 at this time.

Pros: light weight, wifi, pandora, phono input, sleek design.

Cons: remote control could use an led light to see what the heck I'm doing.

Nice receiver with a lot of capability

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Very nice receiver that works as advertised. It could use a hard copy of the manual but I have had this same issue with a Panasonic ZT 60 top of the line TV that I purchased a couple of months ago. It really can't cost that much to include a printed manual with the equipment - would sure help during installation. Also, not quite enough volume capability to blow the neighbors away with my Panasonic Andrew Jones 5.2 speaker set that I bought to go with this receiver. I'll just have to buy a big bluetooth speaker and put it outside for my neighbors enjoyment.

Pros: Excellent quality - works as advertised.

Cons: No hard copy of manual included. Not quite enough volume capability for me.

    Fantastic deal!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased the TX-NR626 on a Monday and had my purchase by Thursday - what a great turnaround. And the price was unbelievable; the unit came with a discount off the normal price. The sound quality is fantastic, the setup was really easy, and I absolutely love the WiFi technology that allows me to control the amp from basically anywhere through my iPhone. I have a set of outdoor speakers which I have connected to the Zone 2 outlet, which we can control independent of the main zone. That's a really nice feature, since we often are listening to music outdoors while the kids might be watching TV indoors or vice versa. I also love the built-in streaming music that I can control from my phone - it's so much easier than plugging in through the auxiliary jack or using Bluetooth, or using the Blu-Ray player.

Pros: Easy set up & speaker calibration Intuitive controls Smart phone app interface Built-in WiFi and streaming compatibility Zone 2 can be used independently

Cons: it's almost too easy to use... my kids are playing with it now!

    Cons: none

tmbcn3 from yakima, wa on 5/19/2014

I purchased a factory refurbished model for ~280. It appeared to be brand new with absolutely zero issues when it arrived. WiFi connected to my network easily, and bluetooth connected to my phone/laptop easily as well. No problems with any of the HDMI inputs/outputs either - does everything as advertised. I am currently using a 2.2 set-up instead of the 7.2 it is capable of. I am using a pair of Yamaha NS-555's bi-amped with a Polk PSW-505 and the PSW-10 subwoofers. I recently used this set-up for a house party/ DJ event and WOW! I finally got to turn these up to their potential. Bi-Amped, this receiver put out plenty of power. Mid/Highs are very clean, crisp, and zero distortion at volumes where we had to turn it down so that we could carry a "yelling" conversation. The PSW-505 really made the difference for the party - but the yamaha towers thew out plenty of distortion free bass from this receiver's amp. For a full on house party - this receiver only needs to be at about 70% with the right speakers - and I mean the floor was shaking, the couch was shaking, the windows were flexing, and all you could hear was good music. I never experienced clipping - people kept complimenting the speaker set up saying it was the best they have heard. Bottom line: This receiver with bi-amped speakers and decent subwoofers = REALLY LOUD (gonna start charging people to throw parties)

Pros: Bluetooth, Wifi, 4K upscaling, plenty of HDMI inputs, 5.2 Bi-Amped. iPhone App

Cons: Could have more power per channel, bluetooth could connect a bit faster, design could use some work, remote is poorly designed.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great sound and what the receiver gives you for the price. I am returning the first one after two weeks because there is a problem with it. It's a shame because otherwise it does basically everything I want. Set up is fairly easy except if you have a set with a problem like I did. It complicated everything for me till I called ONKYO and they said it was the receiver, not me...

Pros: Sound. 2 Subwoofer ins. Second Zone. Fairly easy to set up with a non-damaged model. Onkyo has great 24 hour tech support.

Cons: Remote too small. No backlight for it. Too many redundant names on the remote make it a bit confusing. Online manual not written too well or user friendly.

    Sounds Great!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a great improvement in sound over my 20 year old Techniques receiver. It was 5.1, but didn't sounds anything like this new receiver. I also had a 5 year old Onkyo receiver that stopped working after three years, so I was hesitant to buy Onkyo again. So far, this receiver has been great! I used the Audessy mic to setup the sound, and then had to adjust the rears a bit because they were too loud. Overall, I'm very pleased. I'll update later as I get into all the functions.

Pros: Easy setup for normal operation, good price point, bluetooth works great

Cons: Haven't had great success with Onkyo in the past, doesn't stream video apps like Netflix.

Onkyo Reliability Poor- Service is Horrendous!

JC from Miami, Fla on 4/21/2014

Mine lasted for a little over a month and the HDMI stopped working. Sent it to Onkyo service were it arrived on Feb 28. As of today3/30 still in the shop due to NO PARTS available. Man did I make a mistake not buying another Yamaha....Also, I have called on three separate occasions were I was promised they were going to fed ex the part....they never did. Save your hard earned income and avoid Onkyo! Update: I received the repaired receiver (took 8 weeks to repair due to no parts available) and guess what...It failed again!! Guess what Onkyo is going to and send back! The reason why I post this is not to get back at Onkyo but to avoid others from making the same mistake. As you can tell by now, based on many other reports (check around), Onkyo has a serious issue and is not owning up to it. My solution, did what I should have done from the get go....Bought a new Yamaha. My time is to precious for Onkyo to mess with.

This is a great receiver for the price. Tons of extras, bluetooth, WIFI and plenty of power.

Pros: Hooks to PC HDMI for streaming movies on Netflix, Blue tooth to use your phone to run if in another room, easy hook up, great price. On screen navigation is the awesome.

Cons: hard to set up in beginning, to get sound correct and coming from all speakers on bi-amp, Hard to do personal settings outside the setting of initial set up

    Great Bargain

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

After doing some research I ditched my old Yamaha and upgraded to the Onkyo TX-NR626. GLAD I DID! Out of the box, followed the on screen setup and I was watching movies with a great sound! I did have to tweak and adjust some settings, but well worth the time. I don't consider myself an audiophile by any means, but I do know what I like, and this gave it to me. The 2nd zone feature is fantastic! Love being able to run the receiver with the Android app in a different part of the house without having to run downstairs. I have only had this for about 2 months, but I can't imagine listening to anything else!

Pros: Crisp surround sound. Powered 2nd zone. Wireless features. and the abundance of HDMI inputs. Setting the power on volume to a specific level is nice, especially after my teen son listens to it last!

Cons: Would like to have had the remote be backlit. Printed out instructions would have been nice also.

    Capable, friendly receiver

    J. Skroch from Maynard, MA on 3/28/2014

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is my first network receiver and I like it a lot. I like the support for streaming radio stations and DLNA (audio only). There is even a web interface for making some settings (you point your computer's web browser at the receiver's IP address and it serves you a form). You can set the power-on volume, so even if you had it turned up to 50 the last time you used the receiver, it will start next time at a more subdued 15 (or whatever you've set). The room auto-setup worked well with the included microphone. The remote is easy to use, much better and less cluttered than others I've seen. It will convert analog video sources (such as a VCR or Wii) to digital HDMI for playback. It also supports analog audio sources like a tape, Wii, or phonograph.

Pros: The on-screen menus are very nice and well-organized. You can change common settings without digging through all of the menus. You can set a default playback mode for each input independently. There are editable on-screen labels for each input. The CEC feature automatically switches the receiver's input. For example, the receiver changes to BD input when I turn on the Blu-Ray player and the TV remote will change the receiver's volume.

Cons: No support for Apple AirPlay. The component video to HDMI up-conversion supports only interlaced video, not progressive video (which is slightly better quality).

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I love the sound, BUT: they have the lousiest tech service I have encountered in a long time. Only one out of four was any good. I could not play a copy of the CD on may android tablet. there is no written manual. MY computer is on the second floor and my receiver is on the first floor. The CD is very disorganized. It has french in the middle of the English version and some duplicates. It is also hard to follow, and I have a graduate degree and 40 years of computer experience. The Odyssey would not detect on of my speakers, even though it did emit the proper tone during the Odyssey setup. Of course onkyo support was of NO help at all. These were B & W speakers. Have not been able to pair the bluetooth to my tablet.

    Pros: Good sound

    Cons: Tech Support, user manual.

It is a definite improvement over my old Yamaha. Sound quality is much improved and the set up was easy. It matches up well with my Paradigm speakers.

Pros: Great sound and picture quality. Easy set up.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased this receiver as a replacement of an older Onkyo that started to act up. I had the old one professionally installed so I was not looking forward to switching all the wires. But is was easy and the new receiver works great. For the price I am totally satisfied. I am planning to add zone 2 speakers outside by the pool.

Pros: Easy set up. and good sound quality.

Cons: When I tried to use the microphone to equalize the sound the display read that there was too much background noise to complete the process. That didn't bother me as I was just swapping out receivers.

It's ok for most but not a Yamaha.

Greg from Auburn, AL on 2/9/2014

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

It's ok and has built in bluetooth and wireless, but that's where it stops being so wonderful. The onscreen menus are very poor and navigation was thought out by a 5 year old. The volume has a ugly black bar across entire screen. It has a delay on processing commands from remote and lag.

Pros: The picture quality of the video processing is stellar...better than Yamaha!!! It does sound good and compressed music sound field is second to none. wakes up CD quality.

Cons: Poor menus Poor processor or memory to get lag and delays Remote control is kinda cheesy and needs a universal remote.

    Couple quirky improvements to make

    Steve from Indianapolis on 1/30/2014

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I've had this receiver for about a month and it powers my Klipsch reference RF-52 speakers series superbly - this combo works great if you like to crank it up loud on occasion. Overall, the receiver is pretty straightforward - it's the type of system that you could really spend a lot of time getting to know but if you don't feel like jacking with it, the basic features are easy enough to figure out. There are 2 "complaints" thus far - if you need to see the buttons in the dark, you'll need to turn on your room light because the labels on the front are not visible at all. It'd be nice if the receiver put out enough light so you could see what you're pressing. The other complaint is the time it takes for connectivity with blue-tooth devices - I haven't timed it yet but lets just say it takes more than a couple seconds.

    Pros: Powerful. Good value

Cons: Button visibility in dark situations. Blue-tooth connectivity time.

    Onkyo TX-NR626

Anonymous from Wilmington, DE on 1/29/2014

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great reciever, easy set up with a TV, I say this b/c without a TV it is not easy. I am using this system with a phono player and a 5 disc changer and I used a Y Cable to hook up my Ipod too. Buttons are easy for the most part but one thing that is tricky is the phono volume. I listen to a lot of vinyl, I own hundreds of albums, and the volume and clarity of the vinyl is a bit low and not quite as clear as I had hoped for. This doesn't make this reciever a bad product but it is something that is a concern if you are buying it strictly for vinyl use. So, the solution, I ordered a phono pre-amp and it has not arrived yet. But when it does, it should give me the volume and depth I am hoping for. The pre-amp wasn't expensive and had good reviews, I bought it from another retailer. Phono volume can be tricky even if you use the pre-amp that comes with the phono player OR even if you plug directly into the phono input on the reciever, still not great quality but certainly decent. I love music and my ears are snobbish, I admit. If the sound quality isn't just so, I get grumpy. But I would but this reciever based on its power, design, wireless abilities, and ease of set up.

In the $500 price range this is the best receiver that I have come across. Initially I had purchased the Marantz 1504 and was mostly pleased with it. The sound quality was excellent though I felt it was lacking features for it's price point. Enter the TX-NR626, It is amazing how much tech is packed into this piece. While the Wi-Fi is nice for quick set up and firmware updates. I would still recommend going directly through a router for all other web based options. Speaking of which. The Android app is great for system tweaks and accessing web based audio media. I found it worked well with Pandora and allowed me to control things with ease without having to turn on the TV for a display. I currently have mine set up for 2.1 duty so I cannot comment on it's surround prowess. I would say that the sound is crisp and clear and perhaps a little brighter then the Marantz. Power is more then enough to drive my SVS Utlra bookshelves. With the SVS SB-2000 attached the sound is nothing less then impressive. In total this is an impressive package that should suit most users. I would certainly recommend it.

Pros: Power, features, ease of set up

Cons: OSD could still use a little tweaking, Remote is a little clunky too.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I originally purchased the Yamaha RXV475 because according to the dimensions listed for both units I was afraid the Onkyo would not fit into my TV stand. I did not know that the measurements given were actual measurements as if you had an HDMI cable in it. I have since returned the Yamaha and received the Onkyo and have been listening to it for about 2 weeks now, I had the Yamaha for about 1 month. Even though critics state that the Yamaha has better sound quality than units within it's price range I am going to disagree. I feel the Onkyo sounds better and I am hearing stuff in shows that I did not hear with the Yamaha. As far as what I read about the Onkyo running hot--it did the first day I put the system together but since then has not run that hot at all. My unit is is an enclosed TV unit with glass doors as well, but it has good ventilation. I love the fact that WiFi is built in as well as bluetooth. I did not care about the Apple Airplay because I run that thru an Apple TV anyway. I also like that this system upconverts to HDMI and has a second zone. I purchased mine before the price went up but either way for the price it is now I believe this is a solid unit and you can not go wrong with it. I have mine hooked up with Polk speakers and subwoofer.

Pros: Built in WiFi and Bluetooth, second zone capabilities, upconverts to HDMI

    Cons: None yet

    Very pleased so far...

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I'm not a high tech audio/videophile, but wanted an up to date reciever that could handle all the inputs I could foresee throwing at it with decent output quality. I also wanted something that could connect to the internet so I could control the device and stream music from my phone or tablet from other locations in the house. The receiver is set up in the basement and most of the other living space is on the main floor upstairs. I plan to connect the zone 2 to speakers on the main floor so I was playing with the Onkyo app and was surprised how easy it was to set up and use. The only downside that I can see if that you can't turn the device on remotely via the wifi app. This makes sense given that the device can't really be "off" and connected to the wifi network at the same time. Once the unit is on and connected to the local network, the app works great at controlling the receiver. The sound and video quality seems great...meeting my expectations in that arena. Overall I'm pleased with the price/performance I'm getting with this product.

Pros: Very good set of features for the price of the unit. Wifi app for remote control and audio streaming works very well. Plenty of inputs and outputs to grow with my needs.

Cons: It looks like there is no low power mode to keep the device partially awake and connected to the wifi network...which means you can't turn the device on via the wifi app. (not a huge deal). I'm being told the the powered zone 2 audio should only power 1 (maybe 2) sets of speakers...which means I'll have to buy an additional amp to power the other speakers in my house...again, not a huge deal but was hoping the powered zone 2 would be a feature I could take advantage of.

Time to replace the old unit, a JVC that had served me well for years. Was a bit worried I would need to upgrade my speakers, but was pleasantly surprised at how good this sounded with what I have.

Pros: Solid construction, great sound quality. Lots of inputs.

Cons: A bit hard to manipulate the menus. The auto-speaker setup with the microphone was so-so, I ended up manually tweaking that.

Just bought the Onkyo TX-NR626. I was impressed with the features prior to purchasing and I am quite glad that I decided on this receiver. I'm still figuring everyhting out on it but I am impressed so far. We added the Facal Sib & Cub3 to the receiver, the sound is great. I replaced an old A/V Receiver and it is great to have plenty of inputs to handle Blu-Ray player, cable and game console.

Pros: Apps to control receiver through Blu-Ray is great. WiFi is great also.

I wanted a receiver with network capability and a separate Zone 2, and this met the requirements. The wireless connection worked perfectly the first time and accesses all of my digital content without any issues. The remote was easy to program to control all of my other components. I highly recommend this receiver. The sound is great, and has plenty of power for a medium sized room.

A great receiver for a real nice price. I was going to buy an older close-out that had a little more power for more money, but Eddie talked me out of it, suggesting that this Onkyo would more than cover my needs. He was right! My only issue is with the set-up. I am using this receiver in my family room with the last tube TV in the house (Sony Wega), so I am unable to use the on screen set-up menu because there is no HDMI capability on the TV. TV will be replaced next year. Anyway, I was able to use the receiver menu which is a little cumbersome. Otherwise, the receiver is wonderful!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great receiver. It does all that is advertised. With more technology to consider, I had to contact the "help" desk at Crutchfield to learn how to do more with this receiveer

Pros: I like that the volume is at a very low setting when you turn on the receiver. I tend to play about everything loud and don't lower it before turning it off. The receiver takes care of that for me.

Cons: I have n't purchased a lot of new technology equipment in the recent past. This receiver makes me ask for help especially for the built in Wi-Fi capability. The owners manual is large and takes quite a bit of time printing it out.

Have had this AVR for 6 months now and I continue to be impressed with the features and sound it provides. I am a middle of the road Audiophile who is willing to pay middle of the road prices. Upgrading from a 10 year old AVR I am thoroughly impressed with the details Onkyo put into this AVE for the price. I use the powered Zone 2 for a couple rock speakers on my patio. It works fantastic in a medium sized living room to provide realistic surround sound. The set up was relatively straight forward. This is a good buy, I definitely recommend it.

Pros: Great surround sound, Zone 2, BT and WIFI for a decent price point.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I am loving this receiver! I needed something to power my 6.1 home theatre surround sound speakers and an extra set of speakers in the kitchen which we listen to music through. This receiver is perfect for this! Not only does it have the independent zone 2 speakers, they can be set to a different source than the primary zone. The free Android app lets me control the source and volume from my kitchen without needing to be near the receiver itself. Since the receiver has internet built-in with Pandora, Spotify, and DLNA access - I can access all my ripped CDs and any music I want. This was such a worthwhile upgrade to my old receiver!

Pros: Internet built-in, Pandora and Spotify apps, DLNA, independent zone 2, Android app

Cons: Bring up the receiver's on-screen interface on an HDMI ARC connection is a little odd - you have to set the TV to the receiver's input and the receiver to a video input that has something connected to it, even if off. Receiver sometimes has trouble picking up the ARC audio. Switching inputs and back or shutting it off and on usually fixes it.

This receiver does basically everything in the middle of the market you could want. Incredibly easy set up and tons of input options. Although I am no expert the room set up mic seems off and I had to make manual corrections to get what seemed right. WIFI setup was simple as well and blue tooth easy. I have Apple TV so the airplay issue was not a problem. The unit has tons of power and operates efficiently. Switching between devices is quick as well. If there is one noticeable quirk that is odd - the "net" feature has lousy interface. I cannot understand why the companies have lousy interactive screens when Xbox PS4 etc are so great. It is slow and cumbersome. Otherwise this is highly competitive with any sub 1000 receivers.

Pros: Easy to setup and use. Powerful and efficient.

    Cons: Lousy user interface

The Onkyo TX NR626 amp was an add to a wireless system I set up in my home. It handled the multi-zone system well and delivered high quality sound. The cost and what it delivered in quality sound makes it a huge value. Dont forget to download the app.

    Pros: Sound quality.

    Cons: Size of amp.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The wireless function works well. The sound is good, although I don't have a great set of speakers to really test it. The Bluetooth is an AWESOME feature and its sound is perfect, although I've had intermittent issues with pairing devices in the first few weeks of ownership. I would recommend this unit to anyone looking for a network receiver with Bluetooth, zone 2 capabilities, and a phono input. That said, you should know the following points about this unit. See below.

Pros: Using bluetooth in combination with the Onkyo Android app allows you to play & control things like pandora and rdio from a phone or tablet. This is especially great when you're in zone 2 because changing stations/playlists/volume/etc can be done right at your fingertips rather than going into the next room.

Cons: The phono input eliminates the need for a pre-amp, but the volume output is still much lower than the digital inputs. Be careful when switching from phono to a digital source like TV or Bluetooth. Also, ZONE 2 WILL ONLY PLAY DIGITAL SOURCES (HDMI, Bluetooth, network) IF ZONE 1 IS PLAYING THE SAME SOURCE. (If you want to listen to Pandora in zone2, zone1 has to be set to Pandora.) You could, however, listen to any ANALOG source (phono, etc.) in zone2 while ANY kind of source is playing in zone1.

I received this last week and wanted to give it a few days before writing my reviews. The receiver came nice and fast. Crutchfield does an outstanding job with all there orders. I connected them to a Martin Logan sound system the power is nice and clean as usual with all Onkyo products. the Net is a great feature I am playing most of my music through Tune In. I set up the app on my galaxy 3. I ran the Audiossy feature and the speakers were positioned perfectly. I set the receiver through my 60' LED bravia and ordered the croods for my kids to watch. the surround sound was excellent and not to over powering in any one speaker. nice and balanced. I do have one gripe and I am currently reaching out to Onkyo to see if they can clarify the wattage on the Zone 2. the sound was very low so if that is the case may have to run a Monster Cable speaker selector and go old school.

Pros: clear sounding amp well laid out back panel.

Cons: zone 2 power was too low.

    Great receiver upgrade for stereo

Daniel R from Shrewsbury, MA on 10/24/2013

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I had a 10+ year-old Panasonic A/V receiver that I needed to replace for use with stereo speakers (PSB Image T6 Towers) + one subwoofer (B&W ASW610), and I wanted the highest quality sound and connection management at a moderate price. I also listen most of the time using high-end headphones. The Onkyo TX-NR626 seems to fit my needs very well, especially after working with the connection setup. In my case, I have a number of connections to make: TV, Cable Box, VCR, Blue-Ray Player, CD/SACD Changer, Audio Cassette Recorder, Phono Turntable, and finally my Wireless N Network. The large selection of analog and digital audio, as well as HDMI, inputs seems to provide all I needed. However, I was at first concerned that the combined TV/CD input would not allow me to treat them separately. I initially reassigned the coaxial input for Blue-Ray/DVD to my TV/CD, thinking that I could double-up with the optical input connecting my TV as input. However, after mapping the TV/CD device on the remote to my CD player and assigning it to the coaxial audio input, I could no longer get the digital sound from the TV (which though recent, is not an ARC-compatible unit). Ultimately, I decided not to use the TV as an input source at all, but only as an output from the receiver's Output Main HDMI, and that solved a lot of problems. All my devices now connect to a unique input (or substitute) that I can select without conflict, and which provides analog or digital sound, as appropriate, for each.

Pros: o Flexible input connection options that accept many devices not labeled on the back panel (e.g., TAPE and VCR) o Additional HDMI output; especially with a third-party HDMI audio de-embedder to record either analog or digital audio o Crystal clear, quiet, and full-range audio to match the input type o Excellent Audyssey automated speaker setup and tuning o Easy firmware upgrades over wireless o Excellent Bluetooth integration o Great Internet support o Very good to excellent FM reception

Cons: 1) Occasionally awkward remote, with some Mode keys not applicable to the TX-NR626; although adequate for software setup and control, especially once you understand your connection configuration, adding a true third-party universal remote, with customizable activity programs, is highly useful and recommended. 2) Secondary information on the front panel display, such as the audio input mode is in tiny letters, which are impossible to read from even a close listening position (eight feet).

    Nice Unit

Jeff P. from Long Island on 10/16/2013

I purchased this unit to replace an older Yamaha Reciever for listening to stereo music. Although I have no need for the surround features, it is getting near impossible to find anything that isn't home theater, and the 626 has Blue Tooth, Wi-Fi, and USB control with great file handling. In this price range no other unit came close to providing all the options and built in capability. Setup was a bit frustrating until I hooked up a TV and used the OSD. Since I use it only for music, there ins't a TV in the room. As an HTR I guess they expect you to have it hooked up to a TV all the time. Menu navigation hasn't come very far in the days since I got the Yamaha but it was manageable for basic setup. The unit is used to drive a pair of Polk RTi-A7's that have been nicely mellowed. Sound was on par with the previous setup using just the front stereo outputs. Bi-amping the unit made a big difference in volume and sound. Its just an overall richness that wasn't there before. Despite all the input options, I find myself streaming pandora most of the time and using the Onkyo Remote App for Android even though it technically doesn't support tablets. (The app really needs some interface work to make selection and control easier)

Pros: Great streaming options Good power and sound quality when Bi-Amped Good wi-fi antenna range Firmware updates

Cons: No Gapless music support Can't figure out how to play tracks sequentially via App Longish gap between streaming tracks (pandora? wi-fi?) Occasionally loses wi-fi connection and needs to be unplugged from power and replugged to find network

Actually I haven't fully put this receiver through its paces yet. I recently replaced a Mitsubishi rear projection TV & a Kenwood 5.1 receiver with the Onkyo TX-NR626 7.2 receiver& a Samsung plasma TV. While I wasn't completely satisfied with the Mitsubishi, I was very happy with the Kenwood receiver, in fact I still have it, but after 15 years it was way too long in the tooth. I love the new Samsung plasma set & the Onkyo is a perfect complement to it. A really great picture, & equally as great sound. All with pretty much just the standard settings on both; Go figure. The reason for my procrastination on finishing the set-up, is that we are looking for a corner table to hold & house all my equipment before doing it right, the first time. (Now she's talking about a new couch. What does a couch have to do with my new TV & receiver anyway?) ? Back to reality, from what I have seen & heard so far, this is a really good receiver especially for the money. Someone mentioned that it runs hot, well most do put out some heat, but I have this in a fairly tight shelf space with about an inch of clearance on the top & sides, & a glass front door, but the back is nearly completely open. How hot is hot? After being on for more than 6 hours, I just went & rested my hand on the top of the set with no problem. I can see that with a lot of continued use the remote might be a problem, if it loses the lettering on the already small buttons, but a good universal remote will solve any potential problem there. So that's it for now, once I have it in its real configuration, I'll be able to give more insight on its real performance, but I see real potential so far. Oh yea, not to forget! The service, delivery, & follow-up on my 1st purchase from Crutchfield has been 1st class all the way. JMK-NBSC

This is a great low price unit. The HDMI switching has saved me extra steps in my Harmony remote macros.

Pros: Great setup and iPad app are great features.

Cons: The receiver has issues picking up the signal from he remote. You have to have it aimed right at the unit.

    Great sound and apps

Really love sound and options it gives you. Used streaming music while watching the ball game at same time the other day. One missing piece is the documentation. It was only on CD and hard to access when don't have a laptop on you. Had to go upstairs to access it and then print specific pages. Probably online but didn't take time to look. Wifi is great!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this receiver as an upgrade to a failing stereo receiver from the 80's, and what an upgrade it was. I was hesitant that the sound would be impacted by going to a a/v receiver instead of just a stereo receiver, but it isn't. In fact, it sounds better! It also gives me plenty of upgrade opportunities for the future. I also have speakers in a separate room, and the powered zone 2 out is perfect for this.

Pros: Phono input, great sound, great price, powered zone 2 out

    Cons: setup a little awkward

    Nice Oiece of Wquipment

This is my second Onkyo receiver that is at least 7.1 capable. The older TX-SR505 is still holding it own but I wanted a newer network capable receiver so I purchased the TX-NR626. Same smooth musical response same clear detail but with BT and networking. Highly recommended for lower-mid priced system.

Pros: Onkyo quality and sound. Need I say more?

Cons: Set up a little awkward but do-able for a novice.

This is a great receiver. I already had an Onkyo receiver from my HTIB upstairs -- I got this one for the home theater in the basement. Easy to hook up and had it up and running within 5 minutes. I have not noticed any overheating issues -- I have it placed on an open glass shelf with about 6 inches of space on top, and open on all sides. Plenty of power for my polk surround system. This was my first order with Crutchfield -- it went smoothly and arrived within 2 days. Everything was nicely packaged.

    Couldn't be happier!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

After consulting with the Crutchfield advisor, this receiver was the top choice in my price range. I had been looking for some time but Crutchfield made it super easy for me. I could not be happier with this purchase! I am also using Polk in ceiling surround speakers, Polk in-wall front L/R speakers, Polk center speaker, and a Polk powered subwoofer. The sound is amazing! The initial auto speaker set up takes about 10 minutes and it dials it right in. I definitely recommend this receiver...

Pros: Sounds great, right price, easy set up, functionality.

Cons: Buy banana clips for your speaker wire. It will make it soooo much easier to hook up speakers.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I recently purchased some Polk towers and a Polk center channel speaker from you, and after listening to them, I wanted to upgrade my receiver. I bought the Onkyo 626 because of the specs and that it had a phono input. The sound is absolutely awesome and the surround realism is perfect--I now have my own concert hall ! I also like the Zone 2 flexibility for feeding a second room, and Zone 2 line-out for feeding other amplifiers. I'm going to enjoy this receiver for a long, long time.Phon

Pros: Phono input, complete audio adjustments, beautifully clean transparent sound.

Cons: The enclosed DVD instruction manual wouldn't load into my computer, so I downloaded the print version.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I opted for an Onkyo because I have had two before this one. Onkyo makes great receivers. This is no different. It's the best I've ever had. It has Bluetooth and wireless capability. During set up, the unit automatically reads the network and lets you log in. It was all a breeze to set up. The sound that comes out of my KEF surround sound speakers just thrills me, and the color I get through my LG LED tv astounds. The two negatives: Onkyo receivers run HOT, so get a little fan and hook up next to it to cool it down. Also, the menus take some getting used to, but once you do, it's all gravy.

Pros: easy set-up, Bluetooth, WIFI, ethernet, USB, HDMI hookups galore

Cons: runs hot, menus not all that logical

Eliminated numerous analog and components cables with HDMI cables. Wifi apps are reasonable, but use Apple TV for interface to Netflix, etc.

Pros: Unit has 6 HDMI inputs. Switches and syncs quickly among inputs.

Cons: Single Component input only allows 480i whereas Wii can do 480p. Limited to one optical digital audio input. Lettering of controls is impossible to read.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

My search was for an AV receiver / disk player combination that would play SACDs in high-res, multi-channel audio as well as movies on disk. Assuming setup would be difficult, I figured a bricks-and-morter store would be a safer bet than buying online. But the big box employees were clueless. So I turned to Crutchfield which came through with awesome technical support both in selecting the components and setting them up. Everything works perfectly and sounds great. So this review is more about Crutchfield than the Onkyo. To be clear: the Onkyo is a very good receiver.

Pros: The auto speaker setup is easy to use and works beautifully. Audio and video circuitry are quiet and clean. Solid build.

    Cons: None.

I was looking to upgrade my 8yr old Sony receiver that was part of "home theater in a box". I also didn't want to spend a lot of $$$$. I have always heard that Onkyo was a solid and trusted brand so I went with the TX-NR626. This received is loaded with current tech...bluetooth, networked, and Wifi. It has more inputs than I will ever need. I mainly watch movies and TV and there is a noticeable improvement in sound. I also used the bluetooth functionality to stream music. I am completely happy with this purchase and highly recommend to anyone who is looking for the receiver sweet spot.

Pros: Plenty of inputs, WiFi, bluetooh, networked. Great price for all the features.

    Cons: None so far.

The automatic microphone setup takes some time to run through but is pretty spot on the with the configuration. The volume output from this receiver is lower than I wanted but I am content with it. The wifi apps are a great feature but the menu is a little slow. The initial startup takes some time.

7 Channel Amplifier: The Onkyo TX-NR626 AV receiver features a 7-channel amplifier rated at 95 watts (into 8-ohms, at 20Hz-20kHz, with 0.08%, driving 2 channels). The AV receiver's amplifier employs WRAT, 3-Stage Inverted Darlington Circuitry, H.C.P.S, and Optimum Gain Volume Circuitry for dynamic, detailed, clear sound.

    • WRAT (Wide Range Amplifier Technology): WRAT is based around a low negative-feedback circuit topology that works to reduce signal noise and distortion across the frequency range. A "closed ground-loop circuit" design is employed, in which each circuit has a separate link to the power supply. This helps to cancel individual circuit noise and keep the ground potential free of distortion. High Instantaneous Current Capability (HICC) enables WRAT amplifiers to immediately cancel the speakers' reflex energy and instantaneously send out the next signal. The same high current better manages speaker impedance fluctuations, which can negatively affect performance.
    • 3-Stage Inverted Darlington Circuitry: The AV receiver incorporates 3-Stage Inverted Darlington Circuitry into the front & center channels. This core Onkyo technology employs a low-NFB (negative feedback) design that makes the sound more natural.
    • H.C.P.S. (High Current Power Supply): Under the anti-resonant cover of any Onkyo receiver, you'll instantly notice the High Current Power Supply (H.C.P.S.) transformer. With its huge, isolated power supply design and high-capacity filter capacitors, it delivers the large amounts of power necessary for reproducing the wide dynamics of movie soundtracks and the detail and clarity of your music.
    • Optimum Gain Volume Circuitry: Optimum Gain Volume Circuitry adjusts the gain so that less than half the amount of attenuation is needed, ensuring the signal never comes close to the noise floor. This protects the signal against noise, resulting in a dramatically clearer sound.

Amplifier Assignment: The 7-channel amplifier can be configured in three ways to match your type of speaker setup.

    • Normal (7.2ch): The Onkyo TX-NR626 provides 7.2ch surround in your main listening area. You can choose either Surround Back or Front Height speakers (but not both).
    • Front Bi-Amp (5.2ch): The Surround-Back/Front-High speaker terminals can be reassigned and used along with the Front terminals to bi-amp the front speakers, providing improved bass & treble performance. When bi-amping the front speakers the receiver is limited to a 5.2ch speaker system in the main room (no Surround Back or Front Height speakers)
    • Powered Zone 2 (7.2ch + Zone 2): In this configuration, you can connect Front, Center, Surround, Surround Back (or Front Height), and Zone 2 speakers to the AV receiver. When Zone 2 is off, all seven channels will be used in the Main Zone. However, when Zone 2 is on, power to the two surround back (or front height) channels will be directed to the two speakers in Zone 2 and the Main Zone will receive only five channels of power.

192kHz/24-bit DACs + 32-Bit DSP Processing: This Onkyo TX-NR626 is equipped with 192kHz/24-bit Burr-Brown DACs to decode and playback high-resolution recordings with less jitter and clearer sound. The receiver also employs a powerful and highly accurate 32-bit processing DSP (Digital Signal Processor) for better surround sound reproduction.

Multi-Channel Decoding Formats: The Onkyo TX-NR626 AV receiver supports the following multi-channel (Dolby Digital, DTS, Dolby Pro Logic) decoding formats.

Note: Dolby Digital and DTS listening modes can only be selected if your audio source is connected to the AV receiver via a digital audio connection (HDMI, optical or coaxial). To enjoy true 7.1ch Dolby Digital TrueHD and DTS-HD surround sound, the receiver must be connected to your Blu-ray player via HDMI.

Onkyo Original DSP Modes: Onkyo's Original DSP Modes, combined with Dolby Digital/DTS/Dolby Pro Logic processing, produce more realistic, powerful sound effects for your movie and music sound tracks based on the type of content and your home theater setup. You can choose from the following:

    • Orchestra: For classical or operatic music.
    • Unplugged: For acoustic instruments, vocals, and jazz.
    • Studio-Mix: Suitable for rock or pop.
    • TV Logic: Adds realistic acoustics to TV shows.
    • Game: The receiver offers four different Gaming modes - RPG, Action, Rock, and Sports.
    • All Ch Stereo: Stereo sound from all speakers. Ideal for background music.
    • Full Mono: All speakers output the same sound in mono.
    • Theater-Dimensional (T-D): Theater-Dimensional circuitry takes the complexity out of conventional surround-sound setups and lets you experience the excitement of surround sound from as few as two ordinary speakers. Theater-Dimensional's unique multi-speaker modes let you place up to five speakers conveniently by the TV, for the most realistic virtual-surround sound possible.

Direct Mode: In Direct mode, audio from the input source is output without surround-sound processing. This mode delivers pure sound with minimum sound quality adjustment and filtration.

Audyssey Technology: The TX-NR626 features a full package of Audyssey audio technologies for optimal sound quality. Audyssey Dynamic Volume offers real-time volume adjustment, while Audyssey DynamicEQ improves your system's surround effects during low volume levels. Audyssey MultEQ automatically sets speakers to suit your room's listening environment and the speakers' characteristics.

    • Audyssey MultEQ Automatic Speaker Setup: With the supplied speaker setup microphone, Audyssey MultEQ determines the number of speakers connected, their optimum crossover frequencies, and their distances from the primary listening position, then adjusts each automatically. The room's acoustical properties are then measured and corrected over the listening area in both the frequency and time domain. There is a threaded insert on the bottom of the microphone so it can be mounted on a tripod for accurate listening position placement. Up to 6 listening position measurements are taken to optimize the surround effect for a broad area. If you prefer you can also setup your speaker system manually.
    • Audyssey Dynamic EQ: Audyssey Dynamic EQ solves the problem of deteriorating sound quality as volume is decreased by taking into account human perception and room acoustics. Dynamic EQ selects the best possible frequency response and surround levels moment-by-moment as volume is changed. The result is bass response, tonal balance and surround impression that remain constant despite changes in volume. Audyssey Dynamic EQ combines information from incoming source levels with actual output sound levels in the room, a prerequisite for delivering a loudness correction solution. Audyssey Dynamic EQ works in tandem with Audyssey 2EQ to provide well-balanced sound for every listener at any volume level.
    • Audyssey Dynamic Volume: Audyssey Dynamic Volume solves the problem of large variations in volume level between television programs, commercials, and between the soft and loud passages of movies. Dynamic Volume looks at the preferred volume setting by t he user and then monitors how the volume of program material is being perceived by listeners in real time to decide whether an adjustment is needed. Whenever necessary, Dynamic Volume makes the necessary rapid or gradual adjustments to maintain the desired playback volume level while optimizing the dynamic range. Audyssey Dynamic EQ is integrated in Dynamic Volume so that as the playback volume is adjusted automatically, the perceived bass response, tonal balance, surround impression, and dialog clarity remain the same whether watching movies, flipping between television channels, or changing from stereo to surround sound content.

Surround Parameters: The Onkyo TX-NR626 lets you tweak and fine tune specific surround sound modes to suit your preference.

    • Dolby Pro Logic II Music Settings: While listening in the Dolby Pro Logic II Music format, there are three further enhancements you can adjust; Panorama: (broadens the front stereo image to the surround speakers to provide a wraparound effect), Dimension (allows you to move the sound field forward or backward), and Center Width (allows you to adjust the width of the center channel).
    • Center Image: In the Neo:6 Music mode, the Center Image feature adjusts the output of the left and right channels relative to the center channel, allowing you to make the center channel more or less dominant as needed. This improves the image of the center channel, especially when the listener is off-center. Adjustment varies from 5 (nothing subtracted from the L/R channels) to 0 (L/R channel output is cut in half).
    • Pro Logic IIz Height Gain: The Height Gain Control in Dolby Pro Logic IIz enables the listener to select how much gain is applied to the front high speakers. There are three settings, "Low", "Mid" and "High", and the front high speakers are accentuated in that order. While "Mid" is the default listening setting, the listener may adjust the Height Gain Control to their personal preference.
    • Listening Angle: While listening in the Theater Dimensional mode you can adjust the listening angle to either Wide (if listening angle is 40°) or Narrow (if listening angle is 20°).

Audio Enhancements: The Onkyo TX-NR626 receiver provides various audio enhancements to deliver a high-quality listening experience every time.

    • CinemaFilter: Using the CinemaFilter you soften overly bright movie soundtracks. Movie soundtracks are typically mixed for a large theater (relative to your home theater) with lots of soft seats and thick curtains on the walls. Home theater settings often lack these high frequency absorbing wall treatments, making the soundtrack sound too bright. CinemaFilter accounts for this and for many movies sounds more natural at home.
    • Music Optimizer: The Music Optimizer function enhances the sound quality of compressed music files. The Music Optimizer function only works with PCM digital audio input signals with a sampling rate below 48kHz and analog input signals.
    • Late Night Feature: The Late Night feature limits the dynamic range of Dolby Digital recordings. Limiting the dynamic range makes it easier to find a volume that ensures the quiet sounds are not too quiet and the loud sounds are not too loud for night time listening. This allows you to comfortably listen to without the need to constantly adjust the volume to keep from waking family/neighbors. The choices are: Off, Low, and High. This feature only works with Dolby Digital Encoded software and the depth of the feature will vary based on the individual software package.

Bass Management: The Onkyo AV receiver offers Tone Control and Phase Matching Bass technology to get the most bass impact out of your system.

    • Tone Controls: You can independently adjust the Bass (50Hz) and Treble (20kHz) of the TX-NR626 from -10 to +10 dB.
    • Phase Matching Bass: Onkyo's Phase-Matching Bass optimizes low frequencies while preserving mid-range clarity. This means that powerful bass plays back with clear vocals; it doesn't overpower them.
    • Double Bass: You can also activate the Double Bass function in order to boost bass output even more by feeding bass sounds to the front left/right speakers, center-channel, and powered subwoofer.

Volume Setup: The Onkyo AV receiver provides the following volume settings.

    • IntelliVolume: With IntelliVolume, you can set the input level for each input (+/-12dB) selector individually. This is useful if one of your source components is louder or quieter than the others. This function does not work in Zone 2.
    • Maximum Volume: Use this feature to set the receiver's maximum volume level. This feature is useful to avoid turning the volume too loud by mistake. You can set the Max Volume from 30-79 (max), or Off (disabled).
    • Power On Volume: Use this feature to set the volume level when the power is turned on. You can choose between Last (same as the volume when the unit was turned off), Min (0), or 1-79.
    • Headphone Level: With this setting, you can specify the headphone volume (+/-12dB) relative to the main volume. This is useful if there's a volume difference between your speakers and your headphones.

Audio Inputs/Outputs: The Onkyo AV receiver offers a variety of analog and digital audio inputs/outputs.

    • Assignable Digital Inputs: The Onkyo receiver is equipped with one optical digital input and two coaxial digital inputs. All three digital inputs are assignable. You can choose auto decoding , PCM, or DTS for the digital audio inputs. Auto will decode the signal in its original form (Dolby Digital, DTS, PCM, etc), PCM decodes the signal to 2-channel, while DTS decodes only DTS formatted sources.
    • Phono Input: The Onkyo AV receiver is fitted with a Phono input and ground terminal for connection of a turntable (MM).
    • Binding-Post Speaker Terminals: There are color-coded binding-post terminals for all speaker connections - Front, Center, Surround, Surround Back/Front Height, and Zone 2. The binding post terminals will accept bare-wire, pin-connectors, and banana plugs (single/dual). Use 6- to 16-ohm speakers.
    • Dual Subwoofer Outputs: The receiver is fitted with two subwoofer outputs to connect dual powered subs for extra bass.
    • Headphones: When headphones are plugged into the full-size 1/4" jack on the front panel, all the main speakers are automatically muted. However, the Zone 2 speakers remain on.

    Video Section

HDMI (v1.4): The TX-NR626 has six assignable HDMI v1.4 inputs and two HDMI v1.4 outputs for connecting Blu-ray/DVD players, Satellite/Cable boxes, Game Consoles, and other video components to your TV. The dual HDMI outputs can simultaneously output the same audio/video signal to two TVs (video is output at the resolution supported by both TVs). The HDMI jacks can accept and switch 480i, 480p, 720p, 1080i, 1080p, and 4K video signals to a HDTV. The HDMI jacks will also support uncompressed standard or high definition digital video along with the following audio signals; 2-channel linear PCM, Multichannel linear PCM (up to 7.1ch), and Bitstream (Dolby Digital/DTS, etc.). In addition, the HDMI jacks are 3D, ARC, HDMI-CEC, Deep/x.v.Color, and Auto Lip-Sync compatible.

    • 4K Pass Through: 4K Pass Through allows the Onkyo TX-NR626 to receive ultra high-definition resolution video and pass the video signal to a 4K compatible TV or display monitor. This ensures compatibility with the latest super high resolution video formats. 4K pass through is supported by the receiver's HDMI 1-4 inputs and both HDMI outputs.
    • 3D-Ready: The TX-NR626 's HDMI v.1.4 connections will accept 3D video from your 3D-ready Blu-ray player and output the video signal in 3D to your 3D-ready flat-panel television.
    • Deep/x.v.Color Support: The Onkyo receiver supports Deep Color and x.v.Color content, which can display a larger color range than standard-definition schemes. The result is a more lifelike, vibrant picture.
    • ARC (Audio Return Channel): This feature allows audio to be sent from your compatible HDTV to your receiver through the same HDMI cable already being used to send audio and video to your HDTV. This eliminates the need for extra cables connected to your television. The receiver's main HDMI monitor output supports the ARC function, while the sub HDMI monitor output does not.
    • Auto Lip-Sync: The Lip-Sync function can automatically synchronize HDMI audio and video that has gotten out of sync due to the complex digital video processing being performed by your HDMI-compatible TV. With HDMI Lip-Sync, the audio delay required to synchronize the audio and video is calculated and applied automatically by the AV receiver.

Marvel Qdeo Video Chip for 4K Upscaling: The Onkyo TX-NR626 utilizes a Marvel Qdeo Video Chip for 4K upscaling and video processing. The Marvel Qdeo Video Chip produces quiet and natural video, free from noise and artifacts. Analog component/composite video signals are converted to HDMI, so you only need one cable to connect the receiver to your TV. 480i video from the receiver's component/composite video inputs and any HDMI video signal can be scaled to a higher resolution set in the menu. You can set the AV receiver to upscale analog and HDMI video to 480p, 720p, 1080i, 1080p, 4K, Auto (automatically scaled to the highest resolution supported by the display), or Through (no scaling). Upconversion and upscaling is only supported by the main HDMI video output.

HDMI Through: When enabling the HDMI Through function, regardless of whether the AV receiver is "on" or in "standby" both audio and video streams from an HDMI input will be output to your television, via the receiver HDMI monitor output. You can select between 3 HDMI Through functions modes.

    • Auto: Detects the signal and automatically selects the input sources.
    • Source: Selects the input source (BD/DVD, VCR/DVR, CBL/SAT, Game, PC, Aux, TV/CD) for which the HDMI Through function in enabled.
    • Last: The HDMI Through function is activated on the input source selected at the time of setting the AV receiver to the "standby" mode.

MHL-Compatible HDMI Port: The HDMI 1 input is MHL compatible. This MHL compatible HDMI port provides easy, direct connection of MHL compatible smartphones. Playback of up to 1080p video and multi-channel audio from the phone is supported. The receiver will also charge your connected phone. Play, Stop, and other basic operations can be controlled from the AV receiver's remote control.

InstaPrevue: InstaPrevue technology provides a live video thumbnail of the available content on your devices connected to the receiver via HDMI. As a result, you can preview audio/video streams coming from up to five HDMI inputs previously assigned to input selectors on your HDMI connected TV. Even with multiple components connected to receiver through HDMI, you can easily switch between inputs as their previews are displayed on a single screen on your television. You can even use the InstaPrevue feature for Picture-in-Picture. You can specify the number of preview thumbnails, as well as their positioning on-screen.

Note: If no video signal are present, the thumbnails will be filled in black. With 3D video signals, the image may not be properly rendered on the preview thumbnails of InstaPrevue.

Analog Video Inputs: The receiver features five composite video inputs (4 rear/1 front) and one composite video monitor output. There is a single component video input and one component video output.

Picture Adjust: Using the Picture Adjust feature, you can adjust the picture quality and reduce any noise appearing on your TV screen.

    • Wide Mode: Auto, Full, Zoom, Wide Zoom, or 4:3.
    • Picture Mode: Custom (Brightness/Contrast/Hue/Saturation/Color Temp), Cinema (for movies), Game (for gaming), Through (changes resolution), Direct (no adjustment).
    • Picture Settings: Film Mode (video or film), Edge Enhancement (sharpens image), Noise Reduction (reduce noise).

A/V Sync Control: Occasionally, you may need to manually adjust the audio/video signals that are not properly synchronized manually. Typically when using a progressive scanning DVD player. You can correct this by delaying the audio; options are 0 (no delay) to 400 milliseconds, in 10 millisecond steps.

Separate Audio/Video Sources: You can listen to the audio of one input source while watching the video of another. This function takes advantage of the fact that when an audio-only input source (TV/CD, Phono, Tuner) is selected, the video input source remains unchanged.

Advanced music operation will still need to be handled from your Bluetooth-enable device. There is no song/artist information display on the receiver or connected TV. Continue to use your Bluetooth device's screen to view song/artist info.

Note: Due to the differences in Bluetooth technology, some Bluetooth enabled devices may be incompatible, function improperly, or may not support all features when used with the Onkyo receiver.

    Convenience Features

On-Screen Menu w/ Setup Assistance: The Onkyo AV receiver offers an on-screen (GUI) menu system through its HDMI output. The simple on-screen display combines text and graphics that make setup and other operations extremely easy. The initial setup assistant takes you step-by-step through speaker configuration, source connection, remote programming, and network connection. If your TV is connected to the composite video or component video monitor output, you will need to use the AV receiver's front-panel display when changing settings.

Multi-Zone: In addition to the main listening room, you can also enjoy audio playback from a different source in another room of your home using the receiver's Multi-Zone function (Zone 2). The receiver features Zone 2 line-outputs, as well as Zone 2 speaker terminals. By using the line-level outputs on the TX-NR626 you can connect an external receiver or integrated amplifier in a second room, allowing you to listen to 7.1ch surround in the main room and play a different audio source in another room of your home. By using the speaker-level outputs on the TX-NR626, you can directly connect a secondary pair of speakers in another room of your home, allowing you to listen to 5.1ch surround sound in your main room and play a different audio source in the other room. The volume of Zone 2 is controlled from the receiver when using the speaker outputs and from your add-on integrated amp when using the line-level outputs.

    • Compatible Zone Sources: Only Tuner, analog, USB, and Network audio sources can be sent to Zone 2.
    • Incompatible Zone Sources: Optical/coaxial digital and HDMI audio sources are not output to Zone 2. You cannot output any video signal to Zone 2.
Note: You cannot select different AM/FM radio stations or listen to USB and Network content in separate Zones at the same time. To playback Bluetooth audio in Zone 2, you must also have Bluetooth selected as your source in the main zone.

Preset Input Names: You can enter a preset name for each individual input source for easy identification. When selected, the preset name will be displayed. This feature cannot be used for AM/FM tuner, Network, or USB.

Display Dimmer + Screen Saver: The display brightness has three settings; Dim, Dimmer, and Normal. If there is no video signal on the current input source and no operation for a specific time, a screen saver automatically comes on. You can set the time (3min/5min/10min/off) until the screen saver activates itself. Once active, the screen saver will go off and the screen will return to its previous state if the AV receiver is operated in any way.

Timers: The receiver features a programmable Sleep Timer and Auto Standby function.

    • Auto Standby: The AV receiver will automatically go into Standby mode, if there is no operation for 30 minutes with no audio/video signal input.

[ Jeff  Mar 18, 2014 ]  Staff
The receiver's listening mode preset should provide what you want: "? Dolby D/Dolby D Plus/TrueHD With this setting, you can specify the listening mode used when Dolby Digital or Dolby Digital Plus format digital audio signals are played (DVD, etc.). Specifies the default listening mode for Dolby TrueHD sources, such as Blu-ray or HD DVD (input via HDMI)." [ EDWARD  Mar 16, 2014 ]
I have mine hooked up to Apple TV via HDMI and if works great. [ SCOTT  Mar 16, 2014 ]
Hey Bill I do not use Roku or Play station but I have been streaming blue tooth source in dolby digital with no issues at all. I also run Net flix through the reciever and the picture and sound are perfect. [ RALPH  Mar 16, 2014 ]
    Sorry, I'm guessing that it does but I really don't know. [ RON M  Mar 16, 2014 ]
Don't have those devices but it does from my xbox 360 [ DERREL  Mar 16, 2014 ]
Yes, the receiver provides a means for connection to SiriusXM radio with your subscription and wireless network. [ EDWARD  Mar 16, 2014 ]
Yes you can. I have only done it once though. It appeared not to have the pause and replay features that you get on the app or computer though. [ PETER J  Mar 11, 2014 ]
If your cable provider has Serius XM like Dish does you can play it through your TV [ STEPHEN  Mar 10, 2014 ]
The Second Channel is audio only. [ EDWARD  Mar 16, 2014 ]
I've never done the things you're asking about, but the gambit for sending audio and video for the remote channel to different rooms sounds doable. You MIGHT need to run HTMI cable to Room 2 to carry the audio. If you use a cable box, I'd sooner connect Room 2 to the cable box directly (these also have extra outputs, like mine does, and I use that). As for streaming Pandora from your phone (I've never subscribed to Pandora, but I subscribe to Spotify), yes, you COULD jack output from your phone to the Onkyo and then remote that to wherever the wires go (see above), but I'd sooner add the Onkyo as an additional device to your Pandora account (MIGHT cost you a small amount monthly) and leave your phone out of the matter entirely - just stream Pandora through the Onkyo. Good luck! [ NORBERT  Mar 14, 2014 ]
I have no experience using multiple zones, my receiver is set up as a 7.1 surround system . What you are proposing sounds feasible as long as you are not trying to do it at the same time. I would ask an installer about that scenario . [ CLYDE  Mar 07, 2014 ]
No. First of all there is only an extra output for zone 2. So theres the main zone and a zone 2. It does connect well to the internet via wifi. If you want to play off your phone then connect through blue tooth, which it also has. Either zone will work it. No video for zone two. [ JONATHAN  Mar 07, 2014 ]
Just get a decent pair of headphones with 1/4 inch jacks. they have better fidelity and they are quieter. RCA plugs?...Yo! [ DANIEL M  Mar 04, 2014 ]
Yes, but you must be very careful by keeping the volume low! [ WILLIAM  Feb 28, 2014 ]
Thanks for your question. For information on selecting the best receiver for your speakers I would recommend reaching out to an Advisor by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat. They will be able to help determine the differences between the receiver models and help you make the best choice for your system. [ Jeff  Feb 24, 2014 ]  Staff
It is possible to only have the 5.1 on and leave off the other two speakers. Do this using zone 2. If you are only using the kitchen speakers for music I would consider SONOS for that zone. SONOS is a music system that will give you much more flexibility. You can do this amp and a Connect for the family room or you can do a SONOS Playbar for the main area. In the second zone (kitchen) you can do a Connect Amp. [ BRUCE  Feb 02, 2014 ]
Yes, you would connect the kitchen speakers to the Zone 2 output. With Zone 2 you can have one source play at two different volumes (Main volume and Zone 2 volume). Zone 2 can also have a different media source than your TV. I use this for my business. Hope this helps. [ GUY  Feb 02, 2014 ]
Receiver is equipped with two zones so you will be able to accomplish what you want to. I would suggest Apple TV as well as Apple Airport Express and a Universal Remote [ PETER J  Feb 01, 2014 ]
I dont know,I have only one set of surround sound on zone one, never had any type of speaker on zone 2.miles [ MILES  Jan 26, 2014 ]
Jim, Zone 1 and zone 2 speakers can play the same or different music. Zone 2 supports 1 pair of speakers (2 speakers). Ron T [ RON M  Jan 26, 2014 ]
Yes zone 1 and 2 can play the same music at the same time. Zone 2 is only cabled for 2 speakers (L&R). Page 70 of the instruction manual details the procedure. It is important to have your volume control low when switching on zone 2, then within 8 seconds tune your volume for zone 2. [ FRANCIS  Jan 25, 2014 ]
If you set up zone 2 separately from the menu, rather than 7.1, then it plays any of the input choices at the same time zone 1 plays what it is using. So you can use the same as 1 or different. Zone 2, however is only two speaker outputs, leaving zone 1 as a 5.1 setup. I defeated this by adding a Polk system to zone 2 that includes a subwoofer for the second zone so it has a subwoofer and is a 2.1. Hope this helps. [ MARK  Jan 24, 2014 ]
Hey Jim it should be ok as long as your playing a source like tuner or cd, it will not work on blue tooth or WiFi radio. Unfortunately I found out after purchasing I decided to run a monster cable speaker selector to the zone 1 speakers and ran a few additional pairs of speakers to the patio and den. Hope that helps. [ RALPH  Jan 24, 2014 ]
Sorry but I'm not sure. I wasn't able to keep this receiver. It wasn't compatible with my TV and Direct TV. [ JOHN  Jan 30, 2014 ]
No Mike it does not have a load protection circuit. Your subwoofer should have one. [ ALONZO J  Jan 26, 2014 ]
I'm pretty sure that zone 2 can play any of the inputs that zone 1 can, as long as you make the choice on the remote. I used the Android app on my smartphone from Onkyo that makes it so much easier than the factory remote. [ MARK  Jan 24, 2014 ]
We have not received any answers from other customers on your question. I would recommend reaching out to an Advisor by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat. They should be able to help answer your question. [ Jeff  Jan 20, 2014 ]  Staff
Thanks for your question. Unfortunately, this receiver does not have a tape monitor loop to connect the EQ. I would recommend reaching out to an Advisor by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat. They will be able to check out the models we carry and see what will work with your speakers. [ Jeff  Jan 17, 2014 ]  Staff
Very easy to set up. I have been very happy with the unit. I would recommend the unit. [ FLOYD S  Jan 20, 2014 ]
I think setting up without a TV would be very difficult. The receive menus are designed for a video interface. The app works ok for volume but the other functions are a bit buggy...I would recommend a universal remote over the onkyo app. Hope this helps. [ EDWARD A  Jan 20, 2014 ]
Sorry, I haven't finished setting up my system yet. Working too much. [ WESLEY  Jan 18, 2014 ]
Chris, very easy to set up. I hooked up an entire AV system and new TV and components and was not an issue. The manual is online, so access to that is important. I called Crutchfield a couple of times to ask some questions and they were extremely helpful, but I had a complicated set up with many components. I have not tried the app so can't comment on that. Great receiver for the price and excellent for a full surround system. [ DAVID  Jan 15, 2014 ]
My set up was with cable, blu-ray, PlayStation and pre installed home theatre speakers and I still did the install in 10 minutes with no help from crutchfield. The Bluetooth is easy and great feature for steaming music from cellphones. The onkyo app is very easy to use and gives you most of the remote options from your cellphone. Its so worth every penny. Sounds hundred times better than receiver replaced. [ JUAN  Jan 15, 2014 ]
Of course you can set the unit up without a TV. The built in screen shows prompts that are really quite easy to understand. It's just a glorified stereo receiver with a lot more capability AND and a bass crossover for sub use that really makes these TX-NR??? units a real flexible piece of equipment.. Just be sure to read the section in the manual once to understand how the thought process flows. The app took a little getting used to but the latest revision was a help. Try it and if you don't like it you can use the supplied remote OR the Logitec One or Harmony Smart Control if you want to control a whole system. [ STACY H  Jan 15, 2014 ]
I found the setup to be straight-forward, but it does take some time so be patient. I did use the TV display and it was very helpful so I worry about going through the full setup without a display. Also, I did recently do a firmware update (over the Internet) and this worked well, but I don't think I would have attempted it without having the prompts on the TV display. I will note that some of the prompts also appear on the the receiver display, but I did not do a comparison. It is possible that most, perhaps all, of the instructions also appear there. I don't use the App so can't comment on that. I have the 7.1 speaker setup, a blu-ray player, cable box, and a Roku. We also have an external antenna connected to the TV. Last, we do use the Blue-Tooth feature to connect to an iPod, but I do wish the use of the this was better isn't accessible via the remote at all-- you must push a button on the receiver itself to initiate blue-tooth (each and every time). Last, we don't use the remote much since we do control everything with Logitech Harmony One remote. In my mind, this may be the most important piece in the setup. I really like our whole setup, but I love the Harmony One remote. If it wasn't for that, I'd have to get involved every time someone wanted to watch a movie. [ PATRICK  Jan 14, 2014 ]

I do not have any experience with the Bose Cubes. Only the Bookshelf which sounds excellent with a sub. The acoustimas should sound great as well. [ CLYDE  Jan 01, 2014 ]
Sorry, but I have no experience with these speakers. Your best bet would be to speak to a Crutchfield rep. BAM [ BRUCE A  Dec 31, 2013 ]
The only thing I'm not sure about is your cassette player, but everything else for sure. [ RANDALL  Dec 24, 2013 ]
Hello Kathleen, First let me state that I absolutely enjoy my TX-NR626! It replaced my 18 year old Onkyo TX-SV727. Now onto your question. The best answer I can give depends on how old your CD, Cassette Player, TV and DVD are...meaning they could have either analog (RCA Jacks) or digital (HDMI) connections to the TX-NRN626 or a combination of both. I will give you a rundown on how my components are connected to my TX-NR626. - Onkyo DX-C320 6 Disc Changer (18 years old): Red and White RCA Jacks to the TV/CD L and R connectors on the back of the TX-NR626. - LG BD390 Blu Ray Player (4 years old): HDMI to the HDMI Connector 2 BD/DVD on the back of the TX-NR626. - Pioneer PL-12D Turntable (38 years old): Red and White RCA Jacks to the Phono L and R connectors on the back of the TX-NR626. - HP LC3260N LCD TV (7 years old): HDMI to the HDMI Out Main connector on the back of the TX-NR626. -Comcast/Motorola Cable Box (3 years old): HDMI to the HDMI Connector 3 CBL/SAT on the back of the TX-NR626. I have a Nakamichi Casette Deck that is at least 30 years old which I do not currently have connected to the TX-NR626. If I did connect it the setup would be identical to the setup of my CD changer except that I would connect it to one of the remaining Red and White/L and R connectors in the Audio/Video In area in the back of the TX-NR626. So as you can see it all depends on how old your equipment is and what connectors each of them have. I hope that answers your question, at least to some degree. I could have gotten into more detail but I wanted to keep it as straight forward as possible. Take care, Harry M [ HARRY M  Dec 24, 2013 ]
    Yes... [ EAN N  Dec 24, 2013 ]
Absolutely! There are several inouts for all necessary components. You also have two different hook ups for your video outputs. [ ROBERT K  Dec 24, 2013 ]
HDMI connections are available on this unit. [ CARLTON S  Dec 24, 2013 ]
    Absolutely, and a phono! [ WILLIAM  Dec 24, 2013 ]
Yes, you can hook up all of these components, but the best part about this unit is its wireless internet capabilities, something I didnt think about when I upgraded from an older Onkyo reciever. I highly recommend the TX-NR626. [ RICHARD  Dec 24, 2013 ]
Yes you can. You can hook up a record player as well [ JK  Dec 24, 2013 ]
Hi Kathleen. There is no cassette player hookup on this unit. It was a big sacrifice for me, but I've managed so far to live without it. That was a terrible medium regardless, and the advantages of this unit over my previous JVC RX815 are myriad. [ CHRISTOPHER  Dec 24, 2013 ]
    Yes [ THOMAS  Dec 24, 2013 ]
did all of that PLUS added a 4 speaker amp to it. LOVE the unit. Having the Bluetooth capability wasn't important to me initially...but am SO glad I have it. [ KIM  Dec 24, 2013 ]
You can hook up all of your stereo equipment that you have everything is clearly marked on the back of this unit enjoy. [ JON  Dec 24, 2013 ]
    Not sure [ THOMAS  Dec 24, 2013 ]
    I was unable to connect a JBL Flip for playback but I haven't tried a Bluetooth headphone. [ BRUCE C  Dec 19, 2013 ]
Dave, I had a similar problem with the subwoofer being set to high after the original setup through odyssey. I went into the settings of the Onkyo and set the volume of the sub to -12 and also set the the volume on the back of my sub. It took some time but I finally got it to a level that won't rock the entire house. Hope this helps. Bruce M. [ BRUCE A  Dec 04, 2013 ]
Dave-- I haven't noticed any change in sub woofer setting when going between the various playback modes. I have Polk towers and a Polk center channel but I have a different brand sub woofer and I have to operate the sub at -3db with every other speaker at 0db. Hope this helps you. Jim H. [ JAMES T  Dec 02, 2013 ]
Dave C - I have had my NR 626 since July and have never experienced that issue. In fact, I have never experienced anything other than great results. [ ROBERT E  Dec 02, 2013 ]
Thanks a lot for the reply Edward, I really appreciate it. [ Dave  Dec 01, 2013 ]
I have not had any issues regarding the subwoofer. I like my receiver and the options of pass through and Wi-Fi capability. I too have Polk speakers and sub connected and the sound great. [ EDWARD  Dec 01, 2013 ]
Another wonderful product from Onkyo. I have not experienced this problem. The unit is terrific. I have it set up with Polk Sub and Polk speakers and I enjoyed the experience it provides. A real home run. [ PETER J  Nov 30, 2013 ]
Yamaha probably better for this situation, but I'm happy w/ my Onkyo & sub, but it's on the low volume side [ GARY  Nov 30, 2013 ]
No issue what so ever. I would highly recommend this unit. [ ENRICO J  Nov 30, 2013 ]
I used the Audesy set up and have not had to adjust the sub. I do plan to tinker with the sound when I get some alone time... but I am satisfied with the receivers sound and features )lots of bang for the buck. Loving the 626 sonfar and have since purchased a TX-NR828 for my basement looking forward to setting it up! Note: I owned a NR706 and was satisfied however it Ran really Warm, that coupled with poor ventilation shortened the lifespan. The 626 does not run nearly as warm. Onkyo seems to have addressed this issue with a fan. [ CLYDE  Nov 30, 2013 ]
EAN N C: I'm doing exactly that with the same Polk speakers and everything. We are building a house and wanted in-wall/ceiling speakers. My question is, I want to use zone 2 for a patio out side. Does it send 95 watts there too? Some people are saying that zone 2 is powered that well. [ Kelly 307  Dec 18, 2013 ]
Thanks, Ean. You and another Onkyo fan have responded to me on this and I'm convinced that I'm making the right decision now. I appreciate your time and I look forward to my purchase. Ed [ Ed  Nov 23, 2013 ]
Thanks, William. I love the Onkyo product and you're right, it delivers beyond my expectation. I'm convinced now that I'll purchase the 626. I think I'll replace my Mirage speakers though. Since Mirage has stopped manufacturing the OMD-5 sats, I'm having a hard time finding them anywhere. I may jump to Definitive. Anyway, thanks again and I look forward to my new Onkyo purchase. I appreciate you taking time to give me some assurance on this decision. Ed [ Ed  Nov 23, 2013 ]
95/ channel is plenty, I use all 7.2 channels and the receiver is awesome! This is all the receiver you will need for a very long time, and it's very smart with the audacity feature.More than I expected, Bill [ WILLIAM  Nov 23, 2013 ]
I bought this receiver back in july 2013 and have been very pleased with it's performance! Delivers a nice punch, and deep bass. The set up is very easy. It comes with a Set Up Mic, that pin points the best sound for where you usually sit and watch tv. I also installed the Polk in ceiling Rc80i's and Polk in wall Rc85i's, Polk center speaker and sub woofer as well. The sound can't be beat for the price. Highly satisfied... [ EAN N  Nov 22, 2013 ]
