Onkyo's TX-NR717 home theater receiver is an outstanding performer. Its THX® Select2 Plus™ badge of certification means it can reproduce riveting, accurate movie sound that'll have you glued to your TV screen. You also get the latest surround sound options, including Dolby® TrueHD and DTS-HD™ Master Audio, two high-resolution formats found on many Blu-ray movies. The 'NR717 uses Onkyo's WRAT (Wide Range Amplifier Technology) and a high-current power supply to deliver dynamic, punchy sound that stays clean even at higher volume levels.

You can also expect amazing video quality with the 'NR717's Marvell Qdeo™ processor. This circuitry is designed to show you all your favorites, new or old, at their best. A total of eight HDMI inputs — including one in front for easy access — let you connect all your high-def equipment. This receiver has two HDMI outputs, so if your home theater has two displays, like a TV and a projector, you can connect both and enjoy the best possible picture. But movies, video games and TV are just the beginning.

Lots of entertainment options

Just plug your iPod® into the front-panel USB port to get the beat started. This connection delivers a digital signal directly to the 'NR717's superior processor so your music sounds awesome. Use the Ethernet port to connect the 'NR717 to your broadband home network, or if you have a wireless network, you can add Onkyo's optional Wi-Fi® adapter. Either way, you'll get easy access to the music files stored on your networked computers. Then dive into thousands of Internet radio stations — so you can enjoy entertainment from every corner of the planet. Your potential playlist just expanded exponentially. Want more? You also gain the ability to stream music from Internet services like Pandora® Internet radio, Spotify®, Sirius/XM® Internet radio, Rhapsody® and more (may require registration and subscription fees).

Lots of flexibility. too

Most home theater setups are 5.1-channel, but the 7.2-channel TX-NR717 offers ways to experience even greater wraparound realism. You can drive a pair of back surround speakers placed in the rear of your room to create greater spatial accuracy: get ready to duck when a mortar round screams overhead and explodes behind you. Or use those channels for "height" speakers, so when the incoming rounds start to fall, you may want to take cover. If your front speakers have dual sets of connectors, you can re-assign these two channels and "bi-amp" the speakers — doubling the power they receive is a great way to get every last ounce of performance from them. Or there's always the convenience of using those surround channels to play music on the deck speakers while the kids continue uninterrupted gaming in the theater room.

Ease of use is built-in

The 'NR717 comes equipped with Audyssey® sound-shaping tools to automatically balance and equalize the sound based on your room's acoustics. Audyssey Dynamic Volume maintains optimum dynamics, so gone are the commercial sponsor's surprise sonic attacks. Onkyo's InstaPrevue™ system lets you see thumbnails of digital video sources on-screen, taking out the guesswork of which HDMI source is plugged into what port. You also get a graphic user interface to make control easy and intuitive with overlays on your TV screen. And you can download a free app to use your iPhone® and Android™ devices as powerful Wi-Fi® system remotes (requires connection to a wireless home network).

    I'm done with Onkyo

Tim Y from United States on 1/19/2015

This is my second receiver to fail in 4 years from this company. Never worked correctly out of the box. This product is discontinued now but my disgust lives on. Never will purchase an Onkyo again. They have set up a special online program to deal with a major failure on this receiver.

Pros: It is black and that matches my other stereo equipment.

    Cons: Quality of build.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This receiver is awesome. I've never owned a home theater receiver ever.....Especially liked how easy it is to hook up all my components using HDMI. There sure is enough inputs on the back of this thing. Only needed 1 cable to hook up to TV. I have everything hooked up through the receiver. Love the HDMI through, use it to watch TV through STB/DVR that way the receiver can be in standby mode.

Pros: Easy set up, awesome sound and video

    Cons: None so far.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is an outstanding receiver. Sound quality and clarity are superb. I matched it up with a Samsung 60" LED/3D TV along with a Sony 3D DVD player. Hookup was easy and straight forward. The power rating on it seems accurate as I have it connected to some Klipsch 4.2s and Cerwin Vega D7s for my main speakers. I also like the sub out with a single RCA. This made hooking up my Polk Audio 505 12" powered sub-woofer a breeze. For the remaining surround speakers I use Polk Audio and Definitive Technology Mythos speakers. I would HIGHLY recommend this receiver.

Pros: Quality, Clarity, Power and Style

    Cons: None so far.

    Great Product

This replaced an older model. The set up was easy to follow with clear step-by-step instructions. Sound is wonderful and connecting to other devices was simple.

Pros: Easy set up, great sound and video quality.

    Great Reciever

Jim from Louisville, KY on 1/4/2014

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This an excellent receiver. There are a lot of useful features. It is easy to hook up. The only negative I could say is the dual output HDMI port. The documentation was not real clear on how to set the dual HDMI output to drive two TVs. However, it was easy to figure out. When the second TV is turned on, there a interruption of the signal to HDMI 1. However, it is not bad. I would definitely buy this receiver again.

Pros: The best features for this receiver are the dual HDMI output, pass-through HDMI, and the low distortion rating.

Cons: The momentary interruption of the signal when the second TV is turned on. However, it is not bad...Just a little bit of an annoyance.

    Onkyo TX-NX717

satguy08 from Hemet, Ca on 12/31/2013

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased a new Onkyo TX-NX717 to replace a TX-SR 705 that I sold to my brother n law to replace a Sony that quit on him and all the new receivers intimidated him. I had no intention of replacing my 705 considering that I was very happy with it, but my brother n law was desperate so I said yes. I started looking at all of the receivers on the market and and was considering going to another manufacturer. After much deliberation I decided I wanted to stay with Onkyo and I wanted to stay in the same family line as the 705, and settled on the 717. I can say that after having this receiver for a month I am extremely happy with it. Setup and cable placement were very easy and much simpler than the 705. I had also purchased a set of Polk TL-1 Blackstone speakers previously which were very bright driven by the 705, but decided to try them with the 717 since Onkyo had replaced the amp with a new natural sounding amplifier. Subwoofer duty fell to my Infinity PS-410 which I have always been very happy with. The 717 drives the TL-1's beautifully and people think there must be bigger speakers somewhere. I actually did a test where I had the shells of floor standing speakers and put the TL-1 inside and people were commenting on how great the new speakers sounded. The only negative I have, has to do with the wireless USB connector, and no back lit remote. The wireless network adapter will only see networks if you are broadcasting your network name and for security reasons I am not u

    Pros: Everything

    Cons: The wireless USB adapter

    Great receiver, better Crutchfield support

JamieM from Harrisonburg, VA on 12/15/2013

Bought this receiver to replace my Yamaha that had run out of digital inputs. Setup was relatively easy, the unit even found that one of my speakers wasn't working properly (awesome folks at my Harrisonburg Crutchfield took care of that under warranty), sounds great, has more features than I'll ever use. On-screen menus make navigating the menus relatively easy, assuming you don't mind the poorly designed remote, I've been using it with my Harmony One remote without too many issues

Pros: 8 total HDMI inputs, easy setup with included microphone, fantastic Crutchfield service

Cons: Why can no manufacturer figure out how to make an easy-to-use receiver remote?

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

There is nothing at this price point other than this item which will safely drive a 4 ohm load. Not a concern for most people, however if you are a fan of Magneplaner speakers this purchase is a no-brainer. At 1/2 price you simply can not pass up this deal. After "eating " both a Denon and a Harmon Kardon home theater receiver I finally purchased what I should have gotten in the first place. Driving 5 electrostatic speakers in a home theater set up is no easy task and this receiver handles it effortlessly. The only negative is the manual comes on a cd. Come on Onkyo , kill a tree and give me a paper manual.

Pros: Ability to drive a 4 ohm load Pre amp outs

    Cons: No paper manual

    Good Product

    ARC Issues

Jimh from Slidell, LA on 12/9/2013

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Full featured home theatre receiver. Couldn't get the ARC to work with my TV. Onkyo and Vizio pointed fingers at each other. Read on some AV blogs about issues with other TV manufacturers. In frustration, I replaced this receiver with a Denon receiver at a similar price point. Problem resolved. I really love Onkyo receivers so I am disappointed it wouldn't work for my application. I will have to say that Crutchfield's customer support was outstanding. They worked with me to troubleshoot my issues and gladly replaced my receiver. Both receivers were the lowest price I could find on the internet. Even if I had to pay a little more, I definitely would buy from them. Crutchfield is the gold standard as far as I am concerned.

Pros: Great features for the price.

Cons: Couldn't get the ARC feature to work correctly.

GeorgeY from San Jose, CA on 12/5/2013

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased this Onkyo TX-NR717 from Crutchfield last month - to replace my old Onkyo receiver. The surround sound decoding quality is far better than my old receiver. I can hear the big difference while listening to a DVD or Blue Ray Dolby digital & TrueHD sound track disks. The $499 price tag is another Pro.

Pros: 1. Clean digital surround sound. 2. Use Onkyo APP on my cell phone to control the receiver - on / off, volume, and input source.

Cons: 1. Network radio control speed is little bit slow. 2. Picture quality for Component video to HDMI conversion is not perfect.

Sounds good, very good piece of equipment for the money.

Cons: It is pathetic that there is no printed owner's manual. You will end up spending quite a lot of time on a computer being referred from one page to another to find what should be a simple answer.

    Onkyo TX-NR717

    JAS from Idaho on 11/27/2013

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Setup was straightforward. Nice that you do not have to run the detailed speaker calibration/equalization immediately. Menus and procedures were clear. No issues with auto-detect of the many different audio formats between DVD and BluRay movies. Onkyo service says there isn't a way to use line outs to act as part of a tape loop. If this is accurate it is the only draw-back.

Pros: Great for sound track decoding. Limited as an audio receiver without tape loop.

Cons: Limited as an audio receiver without tape loop.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

After numerous online chats with the technicians at Crutchfield I decided to select the Onkyo NR-717 receiver. Everything has worked perfectly so far. The setup was a little complex and the manual not very helpful but I was able to get everything to work together. I've actually spent more time tweeking my Logitech 880 remote. The Audyssey EQ setup has significantly improved the balance of the speakers in my living room. I'm very happy with this purchase and with the excellent help from the Crutchfield folks.

Pros: So far I like it all.

Cons: Manual could be better; technical documentation is not a strong point for a lot of companies. This is the only reason I'm giving this system a 4 and not a 5.

    Best Receiver Yet

LarryP from Palmdale CA on 9/14/2013

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have owned two other Onkyo receivers both very good. The TX-NR717 is the best yet. I cannot believe the sound quality, iit's great. The receiver was very easy to install and worked perfect the first try. I found the on sceen programming fairly easy to follow. I first ran the receiver in 5.1, it was so much better than my last 5.1 receiver. I than added 2 more back surrond sound speakers and playing a 7.1 disc the sound was very realistic. In the past my back surrond speakers seemed to just be there now they are doing so much more sound. So far I really recommend this receiver.

Pros: Great display, easy to set up and great sound.

    Cons: None so far

    very pleased wiyh purchase

Paul R from Westville , NJ on 8/25/2013

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The Onkyo TX-NR717 gives me the great performance that I have come to expect from Onkyo . The Audyssey 2EQ calibration combined with its audio quality gives me a lively well balanced sound, even in a difficult listening environment, ( a converted attic ). Despite the cons mentioned below, which all receivers have some, the pros definitely make for a satisfying listening experience.

Pros: intuitive On Screen Display makes adjustment of audio and video during playback very easy. A simpler three point Audyssey calibration instead of other manufacturer's six point room calibration. All the features of a top of the line AV receiver, at a moderate price. A well balanced sound. No noticeable distortion on high dynamic musical passages- a must for me.

Cons: I would of liked an alphabetical index in the instruction manual. Its size is a little deeper than other manufacture's units, but I did manage to fit it in to the allotted space. I have noticed a peculiar feature where I can not receive audio, ( but can video), when I switch from one HDMI input to another. I usually leave the Onkyo 717 on the setting I want and turn it off and on again, then I get audio. Maybe I am doing something myself which causes this action.

    Not for the beginner!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This receiver is not for non tech savvy people. Yes you can hit a button and it will set up the speakers on its own but unless you go deep into the menus you won't realize that the gain (volume) on your sub woofer is set too low or too high and this stereo compensated by turning down or up the decibels. Or that the cross over frequencies do not match what your speakers say they are capable of. My speakers were all set at 50hz but the speakers are only capable of 55hz so I bumped the crossovers up. Also do not let any outside sound interfere when this auto setup is running or you have to rerun it again and again and then make changes anyway. Much of the difficulty comes from burying everything under menus and then giving you lousy directions which do not help make you understand how to set this receiver up. My old JVC let all sounds formats pass through. This one you can set up to play back in what ever format you want. It took me hours to figure out how to set this up. Then I updated my receiver and had to do this all over again. Two weeks later and I am still struggling to get things working. Right now I cannot get my menu button to work so I can't change my login for my SiriusXM internet. It may be a bad remote but two weeks later and it contributes to the confusion. It does sound good but now I need new speakers because they show their age and cost. Just wanted a theater receiver to hear all the new formats and got way more than I needed.

Pros: Works well once the settings are correct. Many options in setup for playback format. Network playback. Pandora. Sirius XM internet radio. Has a turntable input.

Cons: Confusing setup, Many options in setup for playback format which causes confusion. Not for the non tech savvy person. Back panel is cluttered. Needs 3 digital optical ports and 3 digital coax ports. Aux port in front is USB only no line in for say my home kit Sirius XM if I didn't have internet. Expensive. Now TV remote, receiver remote, dvd remote, and cable remote. Will never understand all of the settings.

    Sounds Great

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Movies sound incredible with the THX setting on this receiver! It sends plenty of power to my polk speakers and music sounds great as well. There are tons of settings so you can really tweak your system to sound exactly the way you want. I found that the Audyssey eq setup does a great job but I needed to change the subwoofer settings as we listen to R&B and prefer more bass than the setup adjusted it to. This is my second NR717 as the first one was so slow to respond that we thought our remote control was bad. We asked Crutchfield for a new remote to try (which we later discovered it wasn't the remote at all, but a slow receiver that was locking up). The remote would work fine after powering on the unit for a few minutes but then the receiver would just get stuck and not respond to anything but powering off. The second receiver works great with no troubles at all. Crutchfield is so awesome! This is my first time having any issue with a product from them and they took care of it immediately. I was surprised to see a huge box on the porch when I thought it would be a replacement remote control that we asked for but I was so glad they had sent the whole system as that was the needed fix for our problem! Awesome job Crutchfield!

Pros: Tons of settings, lots of power, crystal clear sound.

Cons: Remote control is not fun to use when you want to control your cable/sat box, tv, etc. with it. You have to click a button for the device you want to control before you can control it, like every time. Even when you don't have anything else programmed into the remote you still have to click the receiver button before controlling the receiver. A universal remote can fix this minor issue though! Still an awesome receiver.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Over the years, I have grown up with component systems . In the past, my systems have included a receiver (with built in radio tuner), cassette deck, CD player, turntable, and speakers. My current system is still built around a receiver (with built in radio tuner), speakers and inputs (Blu-ray/DVD player, Comcast box, Internet access such as a Netgear, a X-box device and my PC (this was a must). Essentially, the system is the same with the addition of more digital equipment and more input devices. I had looked at a number of receivers (Yamaha, Demon, Marantz, Pioneer, etc.) before selecting the Onkyo TX-TX-NR717. I had also visit many different locations - web site (testimonials and technical information) as well as actually visiting the A/V stores. This selection process became a great learning experience for me. I spoke with many different sales folks who had personal preferences about what I should buy. I spoke with one individual at Crutchfield who was very helpful because he ask "what input devices do you have" , "what are the characteristics of the room (size, wall and floor coverings)" where the system was to be installed and what speakers did I have to install. I installed the system myself with help from Crutchfield's Technical Support group which I found to be most helpful and educational. Once I amassed all the information together, I selected the Onkyo because of ease of use (capabilities of the receiver versus others), capabilities, cost and ascetics.

Pros: At this point, I have found the TX-NR717 to be relatively easy to use, I have successfully connected my I-Pod, I-Pad and I-Phone to the system. I have been able to manipulate the controls with few problems (mostly my problems learning a new system not the receiver). The Onkyo has many options to personalize your system. There is a app that may be downloaded to you I-phone or I-Pad. The receiver distributes the music well to surround sound system. Personally I never had a toy like this.

Cons: Although there is a Quick Reference Start-up Guide, some important pieces of information were not included like the set-.up for I have a problem with the link between the Comcast/Xfinity cable box and the Onkyo, this has happened twice. I cannot say for sure it was an issue with the Onkyo or the Comcast box. As out culture has grown with PCs, we have become more technically astute but it seems that technology is changing so fast that to understand your system needs requires a technical expert

Ordered on Monday and received on Friday. Easy quick setup but could not get surround back speakers to work. I had to read the manual four times before I figured it out. I also had to call your support desk with a couple of questions. I was kind of disappointed that some speakers had to be in zone 2 and 3 with 3 being attached to another amp. My work around this was to set up the 7.1 system in the main area which works very well and set up z2 speakers as front wide. The surround back speakers shuts off when using the front wide speakers but the clarity of the sound is excellent. At present I use Pioneer towers, sony sub and bose speakers for front wide, surround and surround backs. There are plenty jacks for video and other connections.

    Pros: Outstanding receiver

Cons: I don't like the z2 and z3 separate speaker setups. The titles of buttons are had to see on the faceplate but I guess you have to use the remote for that.

    glad i got this one

I wanted a little more ump from my surround system so i saw this onkyo tx-nr717 on line and took a chance on it. crutchfield sent it almost right away with no shipping fees. the onkyo 717 made a world of difference right off the top. it was easy to setup and i started to hear sounds that i'd never heard before especially in the back channels. after fine tuning it i really started to get down. this system has made a huge difference and even though i'm in my cave my spouse is yelling down the steps, "turn that down some"! i know it must sound good because i've been cranking it hard. good box great price with a ton of connects for all those hd devices. on a budget try this one you'll like it. crutchfield stayed in touch also thanks guys

Pros: nice power low price lot of connect for hd devices pc and mp3 an ethernet. very well rounded foe everything a gadget guy needs. there is always bigger and more powerful but this is real good.

Cons: the lights on the face an dial are a little bright. have to turn it off if you want a dark room at night.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is my first HDMI HT receiver. The price and features are excellent but I have a problem with my screen going blank while in any of the menus. I had it replaced with new one but it still happens. It happens while in menus other than the main menu but it also happened while trying log in to Pandora. I swapped my HDMI cable and I can't imagine it being a problem with the TV. Onkyo said they have never seen this problem. Other than this I liked the unit with its multi zone features. The only feature missing was airplay. I will be returning it for a new Yamaha.

Pros: Excellent price(discounted for model year end) and great features.

Cons: Problems with screen going blank. No airplay.

    Great receiver

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

If your looking for great sound for a reasonable price look no further. Great sonic oomph with this unit, the upscaling is phenomenal, only drawback is it squeezes the picture down some. Plenty of outputs, I have this running polk rtia3's and a csia4 with 2 subs and a 2 ancient Bose bookshelf for the rear. All I can say is wow, it has changed how we take in a movie. Only drawback is that a better setup can be had on the 818, much more advanced but most folks won't notice a big difference. Audiophiles will say why buy the717 when the 818 could be had for $200 more, if that was the case still I'd agree, but the 717 price has dropped dramatically because of that minor backlash. I've seen this unit going for under $600, and for that they are giving it away. Bargains abound with no cons, seek this unit out and pounce, you won't be disappointed

Pros: Great up scaling, thx mode

7.2ch AV Receiver: The Onkyo TX-NR717 features a 7-channel amplifier rated at 110 watts (into 8-ohms, at 20Hz-20kHz, with 0.08%, driving 2 channels) and two mono subwoofer preamp outputs. The 7-channel amplifier can be configured in four ways.

    • 7.2ch Surround: The Onkyo TX-NR717 provides 7.2ch surround in your main listening area.
    • Front Bi-Amp: The Front High/Zone 3 speaker terminals can be reassigned and used along with the Front terminals to bi-amp the front speakers, providing improved bass & treble performance. When bi-amping the front speakers, the receiver is limited to a 5.2ch speaker system in the main room and you cannot power additional speakers in Zone 2 or 3.
    • Powered Zone 2: The Front Wide/Zone 2 speaker terminals can be reassigned to power a pair of speakers in Zone 2. This configuration restricts the main listening room to 5.2ch surround (no surround back or Front High/Wide speakers).
    • Powered Zone 3: The Front High/Zone 3 speaker terminals can also be reassigned to power a pair of speakers in Zone 3. This configuration restricts the main listening room to 3.2ch surround (no surround/surround back or Front High/Wide speakers).

WRAT (Wide Range Amplifier Technology): WRAT is based around a low negative-feedback circuit topology that works to reduce signal noise and distortion across the frequency range. A "closed ground-loop circuit" design is employed, in which each circuit has a separate link to the power supply. This helps to cancel individual circuit noise and keep the ground potential free of distortion. High Instantaneous Current Capability (HICC) enables WRAT amplifiers to immediately cancel the speakers' reflex energy and instantaneously send out the next signal. The same high current better manages speaker impedance fluctuations, which can negatively affect performance.

3-Stage Inverted Darlington Circuitry: 3-Stage Inverted Darlington Circuitry is a core Onkyo technology incorporating a low-NFB (negative feedback) design that makes the sound more natural.

H.C.P.S. (High Current Power Supply): Under the anti-resonant cover of any Onkyo receiver, you'll instantly notice the High Current Power Supply (H.C.P.S.) transformer. With its huge, isolated power supply design and high-capacity filter capacitors, it delivers the large amounts of power necessary for reproducing the wide dynamics of movie soundtracks and the detail and clarity of your music.

Optimum Gain Volume Circuitry: Optimum Gain Volume Control adjusts the gain so that less than half the amount of attenuation is needed, ensuring the signal never comes close to the noise floor. This protects the signal against noise, resulting in a dramatically clearer sound.

PLL (Phase Locked Loop): PLL jitter-cleaning circuit technology reduces jitter by comparing the input and output phases of the digital signal and creating an accurate clock waveform. This enhances the precision of digital signal processing and noticeably improves audio quality. Jitter-cleaning technology works both for digital signals input via HDMI and for digital signals converted from analog signals inside the receiver itself.

Burr-Brown DACs (Digital-to-Analog Converters): This receiver is equipped with 192kHz/24-bit Burr-Brown DACs to decode and playback high-resolution recordings with less jitter and clearer sound.

32-Bit Processing DSP: The Onkyo TX-NR717 is equipped with a powerful and highly accurate 32-bit processing DSP (Digital Signal Processor) for better surround sound reproduction.

Multi-Channel Decoding Formats: The Onkyo TX-NR717 AV receiver supports the following multi-channel (Dolby Digital, DTS, Dolby Pro Logic) decoding formats.

Note: Dolby Digital and DTS listening modes can only be selected if your audio source is connected to the AV receiver via a digital audio connection (HDMI, optical, or coaxial). To enjoy true 7.1ch Dolby Digital TrueHD and DTS-HD surround sound, the receiver must be connected to your Blu-ray player via HDMI.

THX Select 2 Plus Certified: The TX-NR717 AV receiver is THX Select 2 Plus certified. Founded by George Lucas, THX develops stringent standards that ensure movies are reproduced in movie theaters and home theaters just as the director intended. From early design concepts to product rollout, THX works with its manufacturing partners at each step of product development. Every detail is meticulously mapped to the THX performance standards. And THX engineers spend countless hours testing and analyzing each product for sound quality, usability and interoperability. The result of this collaborative process is a THX Certified receiver, amplifier or pre-amplifier designed from the ground-up to present your favorite movies, music, and games in 5.1ch to 7.1ch surround sound loud and clear at studio reference volumes. THX Select 2 Plus is specified for rooms where the screen-to-seat viewing distance is 10-12 feet and the room volume is 3,000 cubic feet or greater.

Audyssey Technology: The TXN-R7817 features a full package of Audyssey audio technologies for optimal sound quality. Audyssey Dynamic Volume offers real-time volume adjustment, while Audyssey DynamicEQ improves your system's surround effects during low volume levels. Audyssey 2EQ automatically sets speakers to suit your room's listening environment and the speakers' characteristics.

    • Audyssey 2EQ Automatic Speaker Setup: With the supplied speaker setup microphone, Audyssey 2EQ can measure the number of speakers connected, their sizes, crossover frequencies and distances front he listening position and calculate the optimal speaker setting for you automatically. The supplied microphone includes an attached 19.5' cable that plugs into the Setup Mic input on front of the receiver. There is a threaded insert on the bottom of the microphone so it can be mounted on a tripod for accurate listening position placement. Three listening position measurements are taken, one primary and two secondary, to optimize the surround effect for a broad area. You can also setup your speaker system manually using the receiver.
    • Audyssey Dynamic EQ: Audyssey Dynamic EQ solves the problem of deteriorating sound quality as volume is decreased by taking into account human perception and room acoustics. Dynamic EQ selects the best possible frequency response and surround levels moment-by-moment as volume is changed. The result is bass response, tonal balance and surround impression that remain constant despite changes in volume. Audyssey Dynamic EQ combines information from incoming source levels with actual output sound levels in the room, a prerequisite for delivering a loudness correction solution. Audyssey Dynamic EQ works in tandem with Audyssey 2EQ to provide well-balanced sound for every listener at any volume level.
    • Audyssey Dynamic Volume: Audyssey Dynamic Volume solves the problem of large variations in volume level between television programs, commercials, and between the soft and loud passages of movies. Dynamic Volume looks at the preferred volume setting by t he user and then monitors how the volume of program material is being perceived by listeners in real time to decide whether an adjustment is needed. Whenever necessary, Dynamic Volume makes the necessary rapid or gradual adjustments to maintain the desired playback volume level while optimizing the dynamic range. Audyssey Dynamic EQ is integrated in Dynamic Volume so that as the playback volume is adjusted automatically, the perceived bass response, tonal balance, surround impression, and dialog clarity remain the same whether watching movies, flipping between television channels, or changing from stereo to surround sound content.

Surround Parameters: The Onkyo TX-NR717 lets you tweak and fine tune specific surround sound modes to suit your preference.

    • Dolby Pro Logic II Music Settings: While listening in the Dolby Pro Logic II Music format, there are three further enhancements you can adjust: Panorama: (broadens the front stereo image to the surround speakers to provide a wraparound effect), Dimension (allows you to move the sound field forward or backward), and Center Width (allows you to adjust the width of the center channel).
    • Pro Logic IIz Height Gain: The Height Gain Control in Dolby Pro Logic IIz enables the listener to select how much gain is applied to the front high speakers. There are three settings, "Low", "Mid" and "High", and the front high speakers are accentuated in that order. While "Mid" is the default listening setting, the listener may adjust the Height Gain Control to their personal preference
    • Center Image: In the Neo:6 Music mode, the Center Image feature adjusts the output of the left and right channels relative to the center channel, allowing you to make the center channel more or less dominant as needed. This improves the image of the center channel, especially when the listener is off-center. Adjustment varies from 5 (nothing subtracted from the L/R channels) to 0 (L/R channel output is cut in half).
    • Listening Angle: While listening in the Theater Dimensional mode you can adjust the listening angle to either Wide (if listening angle is 40°) or Narrow (if listening angle is 20°).

Dialog Normalization: Dialog Normalization (DialogNorm) is a feature of Dolby Digital, which is used to keep the programs at the same average listening level so the user does not have to change the volume control between Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital Plus, and Dolby TrueHD programs.

Bass & Treble: You can independently adjust the Bass (50Hz) and Treble (20kHz) of the TX-NR717 from -10 to +10 dB.

CinemaFilter: Using the CinemaFilter you soften overly bright movie soundtracks. Movie soundtracks are typically mixed for a large theater (relative to your home theater) with lots of soft seats and thick curtains on the walls. Home theater settings often lack these high frequency absorbing wall treatments, making the soundtrack sound too bright. CinemaFilter accounts for this and for many movies sounds more natural at home.

Music Optimizer: The Music Optimizer function enhances the sound quality of compressed music files. The Music Optimizer function only works with PCM digital audio input signals with a sampling rate below 48kHz and analog input signals.

Re-EQ: With the Re-EQ function, you can compensate for harsh high-frequency content, making it more suitable for listening.

Late Night Feature: The Late Night feature limits the dynamic range of Dolby Digital recordings. Limiting the dynamic range makes it easier to find a volume that ensures the quiet sounds are not too quiet and the loud sounds are not too loud for night time listening. This allows you to comfortably listen to without the need to constantly adjust the volume to keep from waking family/neighbors. The choices are: Off, Low, and High.

Note: This feature only works with Dolby Digital Encoded software and the depth of the feature will vary based on the individual software package.

Volume Setup: The Onkyo AV receiver provides the following volume settings:

    • IntelliVolume: With IntelliVolume, you can set the input level for each input (+/-12dB) selector individually. This is useful if one of your source components is louder or quieter than the others. This function does not work in Zone 2.
    • Maximum Volume: Use this feature to set the receiver's maximum volume level. This feature is useful to avoid turning the volume too loud by mistake. You can set the Max Volume from 30-79 (max), or Off (disabled).
    • Power On Volume: Use this feature to set the volume level when the power is turned on. You can choose between Last (same as the volume when the unit was turned off), Min (0), or 1-78.
    • Headphone Level: With this setting, you can specify the headphone volume (+/-12dB) relative to the main volume. This is useful if there's a volume difference between your speakers and your headphones.

Audio Inputs/Outputs: The Onkyo AV receiver offers a variety of analog and digital audio inputs/outputs.

    • Assignable Digital Inputs: The Onkyo receiver is equipped with two optical digital inputs and three coaxial digital inputs. All four digital inputs are assignable. You can choose auto decoding , PCM, or DTS for the digital audio inputs. Auto will decode the signal in its original form (Dolby Digital, DTS, PCM, etc), PCM decodes the signal to 2-channel, while DTS decodes only DTS formatted sources.
    • 7.2ch Pre Outs: The Onkyo TX-NR717 features 7.2ch pre-amp outputs (Front, Center, Surround, Surround Back/Front Height/Front Wide, and dual subwoofer) for connection of an external power amplifier.
    • Binding-Post Speaker Terminals: The Onkyo TX-NR717 is equipped with color-coded binding-post terminals for all speaker connections; including Front L/R, Center, Surround L/R, Surround Back L/R, Front Wide/Zone 2 (L/R), and Front High/Zone 3 (L/R). The binding post terminals will accept bare-wire, pin-connectors, and banana plugs (single/dual).
    • Phono Input: The Onkyo A/V receiver is fitted with a Phono input and ground terminal for connection of a turntable (MM).
    • Headphones: When headphones are plugged into the full-size 1/4" jack on the front panel, all the speakers are automatically muted. When you connect an iPod or iPhone to the USB port on this receiver, no sound will be output from the headphone jack.

    Video Features

HDMI (v1.4): The TX-NR717 has eight HDMI v1.4 inputs (7 rear/1 front). The front jack is fixed as the Aux input, while the six rear panel jacks are assignable to any of the other inputs. There are two HDMI monitor outputs; both outputs can be active simultaneously and will pass digital audio and video. The HDMI inputs will support uncompressed standard or high definition digital video along with the following audio signals: 2-channel linear PCM, Multichannel linear PCM, and Bitstream. The receiver's HDMI circuitry allows the receiver to output an HDMI audio signal from its speaker outputs, headphone out, and HDMI out so you don't have to run additional analog or digital cables. The HDMI inputs accept 480i, 480p, 720p, 1080i, and 1080p video signals. The analog video inputs (composite/component) are converted to HDMI for transfer to the TV.

Note: The 2 HDMI outputs display the same video signal and can be used simultaneously.

Marvel Qdeo Video Chip for 4K Upscaling: The Onkyo TX-NR717 utilizes a Marvel Qdeo Video Chip for 4K Upscaling and video processing. The Marvel Qdeo Video Chip produces quiet and natural video, free from noise and artifacts. Analog video signals (composite/component) are converted to HDMI and can be scaled to the resolution set in the menu: Through (no scaling), Auto (automatically scaled to the highest resolution supported by the display), 480p, 720p, 1080i, 1080p, or 4K.

Front-Panel HDMI (MHL) Port: The front-panel HDMI port is designed for the connection of select mobile phones and other portable electronic devices using the new MHL standard. Simply plug your MHL compatible smartphone into the receiver's front-panel HDMI port using the HDMI cable that is included with your mobile phone. MHL allows you to display full 1080p video and still images on your HDTV with up to 7.1 channels of surround sound. By programming the A/V receiver's supplied remote control with the appropriate numeric code, you can use it to operate your connected MHL-enabled smartphone. Your connected smartphone is also recharged upon connection, and no separate power supply for the device is necessary while connected to the receiver. The A/V receiver is compatible with Android smartphones from Samsung, HTC, and LG (must support MHL standard); as of 6/7/2012.

3D-Compatible: The TX-NR717's HDMI v.1.4 connections will accept 3D video from your 3D-ready Blu-ray player and output the video signal in 3D to your 3D-ready flat-panel television.

x.v.Color: The AV receiver supports x.v.Color, offering a wider color range than the current broadcast standard. For the x.v.Color feature to be useful, the entire video production chain must be compatible (camera-editing-format-player-display).

Deep Color: The Onkyo receiver also supports Deep Color which allows the color depth of video signals passing through HDMI to be raised. The number of colors that could be expressed by 1 pixel was 24 bits (16,777,216 colors) with a standard HDMI jack. However, the number of colors which can be expressed by 1 pixel is 36 bits with a Deep Color enabled HDMI jack. Since the gradation of the depth of a color can be expressed more finely with more bits, continuous color changes can be more smoothly expressed. For the Deep Color feature to be useful, the entire video production chain must be compatible (camera-editing-format-player-display).

Note: x.v. Color and Deep Color technology are supported only when source product, HDMI cable, media and HDTV all support those features.

HDMI Through: When enabling the HDMI Through function, regardless of whether the AV receiver is "on" or in "standby" both audio and video streams from an HDMI input will be output to your television, via the receiver HDMI monitor output. You can select between 3 HDMI Through functions modes.

    • Auto: Detects the signal and automatically selects the input sources.
    • Source: Selects the input source (BD/DVD, VCR/DVR, CBL/SAT, Game, PC, Aux, TV/CD, Port) for which the HDMI Through function in enabled.
    • Last: The HDMI Through function is activated on the input source selected at the time of setting the AV receiver to the "standby" mode.

ARC (Audio Return Channel): This feature allows audio to be sent from your compatible HDTV to your receiver through the same HDMI cable already being used to send audio and video to your HDTV. This eliminates the need for extra cables connected to your television. The receiver's main HDMI monitor output supports the ARC function, while the sub HDMI monitor output does not.

InstaPrevue: InstaPrevue technology provides a live video thumbnail of the available content on your devices connected to the receiver via HDMI. As a result, you can preview audio/video streams coming from up to 5 HDMI inputs previously assigned to input selectors on your HDMI connected TV. Even with multiple components connected to receiver through HDMI, you can easily switch between inputs as their previews are displayed on a single screen on your television. You can even use the InstaPrevue feature for Picture-in-Picture. You can specify the number of preview thumbnails, as well as their positioning on-screen.

Note: If no video signal are present, the thumbnails will be filled in black. With 3D video signals, the image may not be properly rendered on the preview thumbnails of InstaPrevue.

Auto Lip Sync: The Lip Sync function can automatically synchronize HDMI audio and video that has gotten out of sync due to the complex digital video processing being performed by your HDMI-compatible TV. With HDMI Lip Sync, the audio delay required to synchronize the audio and video is calculated and applied automatically by the AV receiver.

A/V Sync Control: Occasionally, you may need to manually adjust the audio/video signals that are not properly synchronized manually. Typically when using a progressive scanning DVD player. You can correct this by delaying the audio; options are 0 (no delay) to 800 milliseconds, in 10 millisecond steps.

Picture Adjust: Using the Picture Adjust feature, you can adjust the picture quality and reduce any noise appearing on your TV screen.

    • Wide Mode: Auto, Full, Zoom, Wide Zoom, or 4:3.
    • Picture Mode: Custom (Brightness/Contrast/Hue/Saturation/Color Temp), Cinema (for movies), Game (for gaming), Through (changes resolution), Direct (no adjustment).
    • Picture Settings: Film Mode (video or film), Edge Enhancement (sharpens image), Noise Reduction (reduce noise).

    Convenience Features

On-Screen GUI (via HDMI): The Onkyo AV receiver offers an on-screen setup menu (GUI) through its HDMI output. The on-screen display offers multiple language text, such as - English, French, Spanish, German, and Italian. If your TV is connected to the composite video or component video monitor output, you will need to use the AV receiver's front-panel display when changing settings.

Multi-Zone: The TX-NR717 offers three Zones; a multi-channel audio/video system in your main listening room (Main Zone), a stereo audio only system in a second room (Zone 2), and another stereo audio only system in a third room (Zone 3).

    • Zone 2: Zone 2 allows playback of a separate analog source in 2-channel stereo in an additional room of your home. Zone 2 features line-level outputs and speaker outputs. This way, Zone 2 can be powered by a separate amplifier (keeping 7.2ch playback in your main room) or by the TX-NR717's built-in amplifier (limiting the main room to 5.2ch).  When powering Zone 2 with the receiver's built-in amplifier, listening modes that require surround back or front high/wide speakers are unavailable. You cannot power Zone 2 with the receiver's built-in amplifier, if you are bi-amping your front speakers. The volume of Zone 2 is controlled from the receiver when using the speaker outputs and from your add-on integrated amp when using the line-level outputs.
    • Zone 3: Zone 3 allows playback of a separate analog source in 2-channel stereo in a third room of your home. Zone 3 features line-level outputs and speaker outputs. This way, Zone 3 can be powered by a separate amplifier (keeping 7.2ch playback in your main room) or by the TX-NR717's built-in amplifier (limiting the main room to 3.2ch). When powering Zone 3 with the receiver's built-in amplifier, listening modes that require surround/surround back or front high/wide speakers are unavailable. You cannot power Zone 3 with the receiver's built-in amplifier, if you are bi-amping your front speakers. The volume of Zone 3 is controlled from the receiver when using the speaker outputs and from your add-on integrated amp when using the line-level outputs.
Note: *Compatible Sources - Only Tuner, analog, USB, and Network audio sources can be sent to Zone 2 or Zone 3. You must currently be listening to a USB device or Network audio source in the Main Zone to initially select USB or Network as a source in Zone 2 or Zone 3 (then you can switch the Main Zone to any source you desire).  *Incompatible Sources - You cannot select different AM/FM radio stations or listen to USB and Network content in separate Zones at the same time. Optical/coaxial digital and HDMI audio sources are not output to Zone 2 or 3. You cannot output any video signal to Zone 2 or 3.

Whole House Mode: The Whole House Mode is useful when you want to simply add extra background music to your home party. This mode allows you to enjoy the same stereo music as the main room in separate rooms (Zone 2/3). The Whole House Mode selects the same input source for Zone 2/3 as the main room. During the Whole House Mode, stereo playback is automatically selected for all zones. The Main Zone & Zone 2/3 will play at the same volume level.

Name Edit: You can enter a custom name for each individual input selector and radio preset for easy identification. When entered, the custom name will appear on the display. This function cannot be used for the Network and USB input selectors.

Display Dimmer: The display brightness has three settings; Dim, Dimmer, and Normal.

Screen Saver: If there is no video signal on the current input source and no operation for a specific time, a screen saver automatically comes on. You can set the time (3min/5min/10min/off) until the screen saver activates itself. Once active, the screen saver will go off and the screen will return to its previous state if the AV receiver is operated in any way.

Sleep Timer: From the remote, you can set the unit to automatically turn off after as much as 90 minutes or as little as 10 minutes; choices are presented in 10 minute increments.

Auto Standby: The AV receiver will automatically go into Standby mode, if there is no operation for 30 minutes with no audio/video signal input.

Hybrid Standby: The Onkyo TX-NR717 features "Hybrid Standby" mode to save energy and provide greater levels of convenience. Hybrid Standby Mode provides "HDMI through" functionality and maintains a local network connection while the receiver is essentially powered down. This allows the user to watch TV without turning the whole surround system on. Furthermore, when on Hybrid Standby, the home theater may be powered up from "cold" using the Remote Apps for iPod touch/iPhone and Android.

Optional Bluetooth Adapter (sold separately): The Onkyo UBT-1 Bluetooth USB Adapter (580UBT1, sold separately) lets you wirelessly stream music from your Bluetooth-enabled smartphone, portable audio player, tablet, laptop, or PC to the Onkyo A/V receiver. 1 question already asked

I'd say this would serve your purpose well specially for the $ it's a very good receiver!!! I have mine in a 50'x35' garage an it gets way louder then i'll ever want it so in your living room it should well surpass your needs!!! Hope I Helped [ ERIC J  Dec 08, 2013 ]
Randy I haven't tried this but will the next time my son and I are watching a movie by ourselves. To me the volume/power has been more than I require for movies to Led Zeppelin. last weekend, I had the whole house hold complaining about the volume when listening to Led Zeppelin Physical Graffiti. As far as speakers I have 1 set of Bose Acoustimass 5, 1 Bose Acoustimass 3, 2 Polk Audio 12 inch subs and a center speaker. As you can see I don't have any serious equipment but I'm satisfied with what I have for how I use it. I will try to get back to you on your question. [ TIM  Dec 07, 2013 ]
I am using this with Polk RM 7.2 speakers and had been using a sony HTIB receiver to power the Polks and noticed huge difference in sound quality when I got the onkyo hooked up. Much louder and brought out the potential of the Polks and I had been doubting the polks when hooked up to the Sony. Clean sound and also I power a 2nd zone in my bar area next to the main room with Energy 8" ceiling speakers and it sounds awesome when other 5.2 still going in main room. You can also bi-amp fronts if you have towers. My main room is 16' x 20' with 9' ceilings and it fills the space with full sound. Definitely use the audussey mic to calibrate levels and it evens it all out. I have the wide and rear surrounds mounted high up and angled downward and I like the sound field it produces. Onkyo app for iPhone lets me control from anywhere in the house. I would have got the 818 model but it's too big to fit in my rack. I like having the 2nd HDMI output. Even compressed internet radio stations and pandora sounds great. Overall I'm happy with the purchase after months of comparing with Denon & Yamaha. [ TROY  Dec 07, 2013 ]
Consistent with ~ 40 years of Onkyo amplifier use, they still design in plenty of peak headroom beyond specification. You really should talk during movies anyway :). I use a Velodyne powered sub and have had not issue with sound pressure levels for non-sub frequencies. Only variable in your case might be if you have absorbing material on your walls. If that is the case then you probably need individual channel amplifiers. That said, the 717 provides exceptionally crisp reproduction of digital tracks. Meaning: marginally designed output circuits need more RMS to give same sense of "LOUD". [ JOHN  Dec 06, 2013 ]
Don't be blinded by reviews my Onkyo will play loud enough to make you feel like your in the theater. It plays loud enough that my wife keeps telling me to turn it down. I recommend NR717 to friends and family and not bad price. [ PAUL  Dec 06, 2013 ]
My living room is small, and I never turn up the volume super loud, so I can't answer your question. I only just bought the receiver, but it seems to work well, and the Crutchfield tech support is very good and very responsive. [ HAIG  Dec 06, 2013 ]
I would say the 717 will achieve what you are looking for. I'm no audio snob but I can tell you my experience with the system. I have never cranked the volume past 70 percent simply because it becomes annoyingly loud at anything more. At the highest point I would estimate you would have to scream to have a conversation with a person at the other end of the couch. I don't think you'll be disappointed, but again I'm no audio snob. Let me know if you have any other questions. [ JESSE  Dec 06, 2013 ]
Hi , Randy! Every case is different, the sound of any onkyo is very powerful. I have the experience that you need to know the receiver and it,s capacity. Every sourge has their proper volume range that you can fine tune at your taste. In other hands you have the great service with Crutchfield, just try it, if you do not like what you hear, you can return the unit without any cost. You can also talk with any Crutchfield costumer service people, and believe that this people offered to you the best choice for your budget honesly. [ MARIO  Dec 05, 2013 ]
Randy, I bought the 717 some months ago. My set up is a polk center with Klipsch towers for L & R with a Klipsch sub. Watching the Band of Brothers on bluray was house shaking and I was nowhere near top volume. I think you would be very pleased with this receiver. [ WILLIAM H  Dec 05, 2013 ]
I am happy to give you my honest experience with this unit.We like our movies loud also. This unit will knock your socks off. We just finished the Hobbit 3D and the walls were shaking .The room is 20X28 foot. Has more power than I will ever need. Speakers are 8"JBLs in ceiling (4) 12"sub. 1 boston main 2 boston rear for 7.1 I am thinking about adding 2 more for 9.1 I know this 717 has plenty of power to do the job. [ JERRY  Dec 05, 2013 ]
