Answering the call for more immersive sound

Ever look up wistfully at the ceiling in your home theater and wonder, “Why can't I get sound coming from up there?” Well, your daydreams have come true with the Onkyo TX-NR737 and Dolby Atmos®. With a firmware update, this receiver will be equipped with Dolby's latest surround sound breakthrough. It allows you to project sound from above your seating positions, for a new level of immersion and realism with movie soundtracks. Dolby Atmos is just the beginning of this receiver's features: 4K upscaling with Marvell Qdeo™ video processing, HDMI 2.0 connectivity, wireless music options, and seven channels of slammin' power make this receiver an excellent upgrade to your old receiver or a great starting point for budding home theater lovers.

Dolby Atmos adds a new dimension to sound

Dolby's latest surround sound technology was designed to bring a new level of immersion to your home theater. By employing in-ceiling speakers or special Atmos enabled upward-firing speakers that reflect sound off your ceiling, Dolby Atmos offers a greater sense of space for sound that's more three-dimensional. Already at work in film production studios and many movie theaters, Dolby Atmos represents a huge step in putting more "theater" into your home theater.

The TX-NR737 lets you add two overhead or up-firing speakers (sometimes called "height" or "top" speakers) to a conventional five-channel system — this is referred to as a 5.1.2 Dolby Atmos setup. You can use either one or two subwoofers with this setup.

Wi-Fi and Bluetooth offer lots of music choices

Music is increasingly delivered from sources other than shiny discs. Smartphones, tablets, computers, Internet radio, and subscription services offer a wealth of listening options. You can take advantage of all of them with the TX-NR737. Stream music from smartphones and tablets over Bluetooth, to play audio from any app through your home theater speakers. If you have a digital music library stored on a networked PC or storage drive, Wi-Fi lets you play those tunes over your home network. There's also built-in support for Spotify®, Pandora® Internet radio, SiriusXM, and free Internet radio streams via TuneIn radio. With so many choices, you'll never have trouble finding something to listen to. Plus, Onkyo's Music Optimizer helps restore musical enjoyment to compressed files and Bluetooth streams.

Emphasis on sound

The 'NR737 is about more than just convenience and versatility. Onkyo has always put a premium on sound quality. This receiver features their Wide Range Amplifier Technology, which provides plenty of current to ensure smooth sound even during large swings in dynamics. This reduces distortion while ensuring music and movie soundtracks have plenty of punch. Phase-Matching Bass Enhancement keeps low-frequency tones from muddying the midrange, so you get plenty of deep bass while vocals and dialogue remain clear and detailed. And if you've downloaded high-resolution music from sites like HDtracks, you'll appreciate this receiver's ability to decode high-res files like FLAC, WAV, Apple Lossless, and even DSD.

Add music to a second and third room

If you'd like to add speakers to an adjoining bedroom, kitchen, or porch, you can plan ahead with the TX-NR737. There are powered Zone 2 outputs, so you can connect an additional set of speakers for use in another room. There are also line-level Zone 3 outputs, so you can send audio signals to a separate receiver in a third room — a great use for your old receiver when you upgrade to the 'NR737. While the kids enjoy a movie on cable in the home theater, you can chill out on the porch and listen to music from Spotify® and still have different music playing in another room. There's also a second HDMI output for use in large rooms with both a projector and a TV.

Simple setup and control

The tiny microphone that's included with the TX-NR737 is your key to properly calibrated home theater sound. Plug it into the front of the receiver, and let Onkyo's AccuEQ optimize your system for your room and speaker setup. This ensures you'll get the best possible sound in your room, even if its odd layout forces you to place speakers in less than ideal locations. Before you start exploring this receiver's features, be sure to download the Onkyo remote app to your Apple® or Android™ smartphone. It offers easy control of the receiver's most important functions, as well as giving you instant access to Internet radio and other online music choices.

good buy, working well after 1-2 years

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Nice unit I bought to replace an older Sony that had a problem with intermittent loss of the center channel. This unit has way more bells & whistles than I'll ever use, but I bought it because at approximately half price, it had spec's exceeding other receivers in this price range. Overall it has much better sound reproduction & distribution than the Sony. (I'm using it as 5.1). Sound is much more clear & obvious as being "surround" than the Sony. Perhaps there was something wrong with the Sony to begin with, but this is also newer technology. This has upscaling tech that is superior to the Sony also. I can't remember the Sony model, but is an older unit now discontinued. My only gripe with the Onkyo is it seems to take a long time to do the switching from the tv speakers to the surround system. Not a big deal, but if I'm "last minute" & turn things on, it will take the better part of a minute for the sound to switch on after the tv is on.

    Great overall

Great Sound Quality for this price range. And with more features than I will probably ever need but if I do they are there!

    Pros: Everything I need!

Cons: My first receiver with this many options and figuring them all out. But that will come.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

A very easy to install receiver with many features. Sound is outstanding for both, music and movies. The wi fi is incredibly fast and has many awesome apps. The connections on the back of the receiver is plenty for most but I wish they would have added one more digital optical instead of two coaxil. Overall for the price I purchased thus, it is an outstanding value thanks to Crutchfield....

Pros: Easy to set up; many features and benefits; sound is superior to most in that price range; easy to operate interface though a bit outdated; superfast wi-fi connection to be able to go to your favorite music apps.

Cons: No mirror imagining as some other receivers have; bluetooth only works as a receiver and not as a transmitter; older interface (on screen) design; have to continously keep pressing the receiver mode button in order to access set up functions.

Pros: Plenty of power and loaded with options

    Cons: None so far

Easy to install and set up. Sound is much crisper than old Onkyo. We are really very pleased. An advisor helped me select this model -- it was the most compatible with what we had before. Please with product, advisor and Crutchfield! Thank you!

    Nice Receiver for the price

    James from Florida on 2/3/2016

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great receiver for the price. Has a lot of features that are normally found on more expensive units. This receiver is actually discontinued but is still available at Crutchfield. THis is a great price. Unit has downloadable upgrade to ATMOS which went smoothly througha wired network connection. Andriod app works well to remotely control unit and Zone 2.

Pros: Great value for the money had no problems so far.

Cons: Documentation could be much better on setting up and using the various features. Also there is only an output for an HDMI monitor/TV so if you have one that requires only video or component input you will not be able to use this unit.

A high quality and amazing AV Receiver that gives me everything I could possibly need. Set-up was pretty easy and even with the average quality speaker system I have in place it provides a great sound thanks to the simple calibration option.

Pros: Ease of set up & use. Ability to calibrate and adjust speaker settings to achieve a great sound from basic speaker systems.

    Cons: None

Pros: Great sound quality. Easy setup. WiFi and Bluetooth capable. Many features I have yet to explore.

Cons: Remote not illuminated. Display on the receiver is somewhat had to see from across the room.

Great AVR ... great price! I've been using it for about a week ... still going through the Advanced manual to learn more about it.

Cons: Hard to find some adjustments ... still learning about it.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

So far, so good. I bought the unit because I needed HDMI connections, and got plenty of those. System sounds great.

Pros: Looks nice. Lots of connections. Sounds awesome. Quick delivery and high quality packaging.

Cons: Text on the front of the unit is not illuminated and is very small and hard to read. I find that I usually need some kind of flashlight or something in order to switch listening modes or whatever... but my eyes aren't as young as they used to be and location the unit is is not very well lit. Also, I attempted to use the RCA jacks that are labeled PHONO to play an old ipod and something is just wrong with them - sound is all scratchy etc. I just used another set and they work fine.

    Setter from Washington on 1/17/2016

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was looking to upgrade my home theater audio to 7.2 from my much older 5.1 receiver. The old receiver was an Onkyo as well and is still going strong, but this new one was worth the money to me to add the extra channels. I had researched quite a bit before finding this unit. I'd read reviews of Sony, Pioneer, Marantz, and Onkyo receivers. My main worry was finding an amplifier that could drive my 4 ohm speakers without overheating. Just finding one that advertised as 4ohm compatible was difficult. So, when I saw this one for sale at this low price I pulled the trigger figuring I couldn't lose a fortune if it was not up to par. To my surprise this thing drives the 4ohm speakers with ease with plenty of power and runs surprisingly cool while doing it. But... be warned: the instruction manual from Onkyo is horrible. Even if you have a fair amount of experience with receivers this will be a challenge and Onkyo support is kind of a "hit or miss" depending on who answers your call. The one bit of advice I can offer for anyone buying this is to remember it's a high tech device and though it can be frustrating to set up remember that plugging and unplugging cords can reset and solve problems during the process. That being said I am completely happy with this receiver and would recommend it without reservation.

Pros: Great quality, plenty of power for home theater.

Cons: Horrible user manual, including the online 'Advanced" manual you can download online.

    Great value

    Consumer from California on 1/17/2016

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Crutchfield talked me into this slightly older model and boy am I glad they did. I was looking to replace an old onkyo that was dying after a decade of use, and this fit the bill perfectly. It was easy to set up, and has all the features I wanted. Having a zone 2 was critical to me, and this one has it. The sound is great on my onkyo speakers. The number of connections is fantastic, and having blue tooth connection makes life easy. Bonus is that this is the only remote I've encountered that we could program to use with our Xfinity digital converter box (using a PACE brand code we found on the Internet)

Pros: Easy to set up, powerful, great sound for music and movies

Cons: Big and bulky. Minimal documentation.

    Great value

Very solid receiver for the price

MarcM from New York,NY on 1/11/2016

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this receiver to upgrade from my old onkyo 507, a more entry level receiver. After reading numerous reviews I decided on the 737 because it had all the current & future upgrades I would need. I chose this one over the current 747 because of the price and because any features of the more current one were features I really do not need.

    Pros: Solid build; more power & features than my old; familiarity with onkyo;

Cons: Lack of Audissey auto calibration (accuEQ is far more limited); onkyo remote tends to be a bit of a PITA when trying to make adjustments and settings (not intuitive & requires more steps than should be necessary)

    great bang for the buck

    doorsRus from Florida on 1/10/2016

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I replaced a 9 year old Harmon Kardon with this Onkyo. I'm not tech savvy by any means, and the unit was easy to connect to my other existing devices, without support. the unit makes my 9 year old surround sound speakers sound much better than they ever have.

Pros: great sound, easy set up.

Cons: can't use headphones and surround sound at the same time, to accommodate my partial hearing loss. My old unit allowed me to have my headphones on at a higher volume than the surround sound the rest of my family was listening to.

I have not yet used this product, as it is for s house that will be built in the summer, but it has the power necessary for the large room it will be in, plus the features I want and need. Ladtly, Onkyo has been a leader in the audio field for decades. For the price, this appears to be a bargain!

    Pros: Power, features and price

    Cons: None so far

Avoid if you don't have an HDMI TV

    LeeA from Texas on 1/8/2016

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I'll give a follow-up, after I Buy A New Television. I suspect it will work fine, once I buy all new peripherals.

Cons: It will not down-convert HDMI inputs to Component. Not a "con" to most people, but I have an older television which still has a very good picture, but does not have an HDMI input. Somehow it is capable of UP-converting component signals to HDMI, but can't down-convert (according to Onkyo tech support). Another example of planned obsolescence, I suppose.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

It's not that often that I trust someone else to choose any of my audio or video equipment. But, I've learned over the years that the guys at Crutchfield are extremely well trained, really know their stuff and are almost always there to steer you to what is best for your situation and budget. So, when I bought all new 4K TV's for my house and realized that I also needed a new AV receiver......well, I turned to them again. I have some pretty large and heavy duty speakers in my system and I wanted something that would give me all the up to date AV features that I wanted, plenty of power and still in a reasonable budget. I was really trying to stay in the $400 or so range. Because I had a Yamaha receiver before that I liked, I was leaning that way. But, my Crutchfield adviser suggested that I seriously consider the Onkyo TX-NR737 as it would only cost a minimal amount more and give me way more features and power. The normal list price on this AV receiver was nearly $900 but it was on sale for just $499. After a little bit of research and reading a whole bunch of online reviews, I pulled the trigger and ordered one. I've just installed this new receiver in the past 4 or 5 days, so I can't say that I've got loads of experience with it yet. But, here's what I can say. First off, it sounds GREAT! Plenty of power and the surround sound is awesome. Surprisingly, it was very easy to setup and understand. So far, I think a great purchase.

Pros: Easy to set up. Easy to understand. Looks great and has more than enough inputs. Plenty of power and great feature set. Excellent value for the money spent. Seems like a much more expensive AV receiver as compared to other offerings under $500.

Cons: Haven't really found any so far.

    Exeeds Expectations

Leo H from New Mexico on 12/29/2015

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Purchased the Onkyo after an inexpensive Sony receiver failed to deliver consistent sound quality. The unit showed up 2 days after the order was placed which I considered exceptional during the Holiday shipping rush. Setup was with a Sony 65 inch UHD 4K television, Dish Hopper, and a Sony Blue Ray DVD player. Setup was relatively simple using the included quick setup guide. As some reviewers have mentioned you must use a television to do a complete setup. One glitch that I ran into during the setup process was getting audio on a 4K Netflix source from the TV. The Sony TV has built in apps including Netflix, using Hi speed HDMI cables connected to ARC enabled HDMI ports was enough to get the video in 4K resolution but no audio. Using the Blue Ray DVD player as the source which also included many of the same apps as the TV provided Video in 1080P and audio, but not 4K. It turns out that under the sound menu on the Onkyo there is a parameter that allows for HDMI ARC control. Once that was set I was able to get 4K video as well as audio using the TV as the source. As a note to future buyers it is not enough to only connect to ARC enabled HDMI channels you must additionally enable HDMI ARC control. I am very pleased with the consistent audio quality that this unit provides.

Pros: Fast Ship, Great Sound, Easy setup, except for the issue mentioned above, won't break the bank

Cons: Remote design needs work, but is not a major issue. Would like to see paper manuals included, the basic manual while OK for basic setup did not cover the HDMI control setup as mentioned. what a step up from the 10+yr Denon I've been using. Being able to connect with HDMIs is so nice, so that's the first benefit. Next, this receiver powers the Infinity 313 towers great! They sound amazing with this receiver. Also great power to the CS60 surround speakers purchased. Ease of use for this receiver is great as well. Set up on the TV screen makes it so nice to dial everything in. The Accucheck was nice to run since my room is set up differently with higher surround and lower front/center speakers, so helps dial speakers in. Love that this also has the bluetooth feature to run from Iphone for music. The net connection also allows for easy set up of Pandora, which is where most of my music listening is done.

Pros: HDMI connectivity on-screen tv set up great power for speakers second room audio power easy set up easy to use remote bluetooth/net connectivity great price!

Cons: lacks apple airplay - if that is needed, will need newer version, otherwise no cons with this great receiver!

This is my third onkyo receiver. No problems with any of them. Just keep upgrading to a newer model with latest technology. The onkyo tx-nr737 is the best so far. I love the adjustment on tone and treble for front speakers. Really enhances the overall field effect. Setup is really simple. Haven't tried the atmos speakers yet, waiting for delivery. I'm sure it will enhance the field effect even more. Will update once I receive them.

Pros: I love everything about the onkyo tx-nr737

Cons: Goes to tv/dvd input everytime upon startup. Found out its a trait of having arc capability.

I really like the power performance this unit has.... After playing it at high levels for hours and hours, it still had crisp highs and lows... My previous pioneer system seem like it would lose a lot of its kick after playing it for only an hour or so. This is a great unit overall other than a few connection issues from time to time

    Pros: Power

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

If you're looking for a receiver with a lot of functionality for the money, this could very well be the one for you. I purchased this receiver to replace a six year old Pioneer Elite that is a 5.1. I chose it because of the 7.1.2 and Bluetooth functionality. A Crutchfield Rep. persuaded me that for the money I couldn't go wrong. The key wording is for the money. In the price range I doubt it can be beat. I will likely go back to another Pioneer Elite in the next year, but I need to save up a bit for it. I guess I prefer it because of my comfort level with it.

Pros: The Price, The Price, The Price! The 7.1.2 and Bluetooth functionality. My Yamaha dual 12" subwoofer seems to be more responsive then with the Pioneer Elite.

Cons: It does have some negatives. The Pioneer Elite had a much more durable feel. It also appears to provide more control through its menus than the Onkyo. The EQ options also seem to be not as well rounded. The Bluetooth is a bit skippy. It happens when paired to my iPhone, my Droid and my laptop. It doesn't happen to often, but enough to be an irritant.

Pros: Powerful clean sound. Plenty of inputs.

Cons: Bit of a learning curve for me with all the newfangled technology but Crutchfield's customer support works wonders. Lack of decent lighting on the unit itself and the remote is the only reason for the missing fifth star.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

More features for your dollar than the competition, with decent quality. Missing some build quality, like a really cheap plastic volume knob and detachable power cord. Also, you cannot fully configure this unless you hook it up to a TV. Beware. Crutchfield nor Onkyo specify this on their sites, and the advisor I spoke to never brought this up when I explained I was going to use this as a stereo receiver to play music only. Why get this home theater receiver then? Well for one it was on sale and it had the netwrok features I was looking for. On to the software side. The controller app is handy, but only lets you select one album at a time. It would be great to be able to queue up playlists. Again, for more network player control, you must have a screen hooked up, which I do not want in my living room. Onkyo should do a little more work and design the app to be a full controller of this unit. Really. So one less star for this. This said, having Phono, network playing, wifi, bluetooth and decent sound in one enclosure is pretty sweet.

    Pros: Tons of features

Cons: weak software, requires a TV for full control.

I replaced a Yamaha Rx 479 with this unit. The Yamaha was Ok but not as good as my 8 year old one that had problems. This Rx was easy to set up, I thought the Basic manual was enough to get me going and easy to understand, actually better than Yamaha. I have yet to need to download the advanced manual like I needed to on the Yamaha. The remote works well, but could be laid out better. Excellent power for home theatre and good bass. Movies really come alive. I noticed a big difference between this unit and the Yamaha. Music whether Rock (1970's and 80's for me) or easy listening like Sinatra or Bernsteins Mass are excellent. Captain America was superb. I actually heard surround effects I never heard before. It does have long turn on time, running thru several sequences , probably about 30 seconds. I use it in 5.1 right now , but I like the ability to change to 7.1 or Atmos in the future if I desire. You do not need any more cable than HDMI capable of ARC. The up conversion of composite signals and component signals to hdmi is convenient. No monitor cables needed. I wold most certainly purchase this unit again. Crutchfield of course makes it easy with their detailed specs and 60 day return.

Pros: Excellent sound, easy set up, Up conversion of composite signals, phono plug, future proof with HDCP 2.2 ( if ever fully implemented).

Cons: Long power up time, no ac terminals for other gear, Not having a full written manual ( none of the manufactures appear to)

Easy to install, an advanced manual for more sophisticated use, great price and certainly enough power for my stereo installation (I am not using the surround functions - yet). Remote functions flawlessly and easily. HDMI connections a breeze. All connections well marked.

Pros: Does everything, ease of use, abundant power, excellent remote, sound is terrific. Great Crutchfield technical support and knowledge.

    Cons: Some instructions are cryptic.

This receiver is as a very good receiver for my purposes. I am not an audiophile, just a music lover and a Netflix lover. I have not owned very many products like this. My friend gave me an old Denon that I had been using for a while. We moved into a new house that had speakers in the ceiling and on the screened in porch. I needed a dual zone 7.2 channel receiver to drive the system. I saw this one and went for it. It sounds really good with a surround sound set of Onkyo speakers and subwoofer I found online. I am very happy with the sound. It was a little hard to figure out how to activate zone 2. The instructions are not very clear on that but a phone call to Crutchfield resolved that issue. I am still not able to log into my Sirius/XM internet account not matter what I try. Sirius blames it on Onkyo and Onkyo blames it on Sirius. The Crutchfield rep explained to me that every time Onkyo fixes the firmware to fit Sirius, Sirius changes it again. I was told a new firmware version is in the works. Who knows? I am disgusted with Sirius so I have changed to Spotify which I discovered on the receiver. I like it better. So, the receiver is a good buy. I don't know how it stacks up to all the other comps.

    Pros: Great sound. Dual zones.

Cons: Instructions are weak. Sirius interface is lousy.

After doing research and having owned both Onkyo and Integra products I decided to purchase the TX NR-737 from Crutchfield. I've purchased many products from them over the years and have always had excellent service. The receiver had all the options I needed and the amplifiers power is perfect. I was replacing a few year old Integra DTR 6.5, so I wasn't sure I would have the same power. The new receiver has the right amount of power for the Mirage speakers it is paired with and delivers clean sound. Very happy with my purchase and follow up from Crutchfield.

Pros: The display is great. The HDMI connections make for an easy set-up. The Bluetooth connectivity is a nice touch.

Cons: I wish the remote had a back-light display like my previous receiver.

I bought this product for a couple of reasons: it was offered at a closeout model price and it was an THX Onkyo receiver. Like most home theater receivers on the market, It has lots of features that I will probably never use. I have purchased Onkyo receivers exclusively for about 20 years. Starting off with my first rack system, I have watched home entertainment electronics downsize over the years to the point that a single component offers the best quality and saves space.

Pros: Menu system projected on TV, making initial setup quick and easy; Bluetooth; Networking ready; ACCeq setup for the sound balance was fast and effortless

Cons: I have only had the unit for about a month, No problems so far

This is a great buy. Set up was really fast. I used the automatic speaker calibration which worked well but I ended up adjusting the the subwoofer a little higher. I use with 5 in-ceiling speakers plus subwoofer. I have cranked it up and the sound is really clear at all volumes. All of features work well including the app which I have been using on an iPhone 6s. I have used the Bluetooth in conjunction with iTunes and hooked up my Pandora and TuneIn Radio accounts on the receiver itself. This is my second Onkyo receiver and this one sounds better than my past one. I have an older plasma TV and use an external HDMI to analog converter to the TV monitor which allows me to take advantage of the on-screen programming feature. I am sure that there a million features that I am not using. Nevertheless, I am a satisfied customer and give this product a thumbs up.

Pros: Customization features, bluetooth, iPhone app, great sound.

This unit is the brains of my 5.1.2 Atmos surround used in my home theater. I purchased this unit on suggestion of my Crutchfield "helper" and it does not disappoint. Upgraded the software online and all is well for Atmos. Using provided tuning mic made set up easy and optimized for where my wife and I sit in the theater. Pushes 4 ceiling, 2 tower, sub (later to add second) and center speaker with ease and evens them all out (due to mic setup) to make listening experience simply awesome.

Pros: Easy setup, control, sound, 'smart' features.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I use this receiver with my 14 speaker whole home sound system. I do not use it for video nor surround sound. I bought it because I needed audio equipment for my new house which has 14 speakers grouped into three zones. For two zones (4 speakers in two locations), I needed to control the volume with the receiver. The third zone (10 speakers in six rooms) has volume controls in each room. This receiver met these requirements perfectly. It powers and controls the volume in two zones. The third zone is powered by a Niles SI-2150 amp connected to the receiver's zone 3 output. The power and audio source for each zone can be controlled independently. The volume of zones 1 and 2 can also be controlled indecently. The receiver's WiFi and internet music works great. It readily connected to my Pandora account. The android app works great. It controls each zone. With Pandora it displays the song playing.

Pros: Three Audio Zones. WiFi Pandora Android App

Caveat: I am not an audiophile, and this is the first receiver I have purchased in over 10 years. So some of the following may reflect my lack of knowledge. The receiver generally works as advertised, I am satisfied with the sound it products. I bought this mainly because I wanted a system that could drive the home entertainment system in my living room (e.g., TV surround sound) and have a separate powered speakers for the rest of the house (dining room, kitchen, patio). I connected the Zone 2 powered output to a Niles passive switch box to feed the ceiling speakers in the rest of the house.

Cons: Initial set up was confusing. I figured it out (with good tech support from Crutchfield), but manual does not make it clear. To get sound in Zone 2, go through steps to select Z2, select input for Z2, then manage volume for Z2 separately from main zone. Easy after I did it, but took a while to figure out how; the manual is less than clear. 2nd issue is audio from STB delivered via HDMI to Onkyo receiver will not play in Zone 2. Can't play music from STB in whole house.

I set up the receiver with very little problem, paired with a DefTech 5.1 system. The manual included in the box was for a different Onkyo receiver, so the back panel was set up slightly differently. Not really a big deal though as plugging in the various wires was easy. The auto-calibration feature doesn't seem very good; it ended up adjusting my sub way down, to the point where there was no bass, so I had to manually adjust the setting to bring it back up. Paired my computer and phone via bluetooth without a problem, and the sound is great.

This performs well compared with the old Sony's I've always used. I switched to the Onkyo because of the upconversion from Component/Composite to HDMI. Setup was very nice and the included color coding labels will be nice for changes down the road. This system is paired with a Definitive Technology ProCinema 600 set. The performance is very nice for both music and movies. I haven't setup with Atmos yet, but may down the road. One review mentioned the long startup time - this is definitely true, but once it's on, it's great. I especially like the CEC functionality which switches inputs etc as necessary. This makes use for my wife and son much easier. I am however surprised at needing to operate at 50 (50% power) to hear things well. Other receivers in the past have operated in the lower, 30% range. I expected, given the power output of this unit, it would operate in a similar range (the speakers have a ~89dB sensitivity). All and all, it is a solid buy.

Pros: Loud and clean reproduction. Well shielded even with my left channel less than 3' away. Easy to use with or without the remote. Clear connections on the back.

Cons: Remote is pretty weak for a higher end receiver. Looks like a plastic kids toy.

This receiver/amp does a very good job of taking HDMI inputs and putting out very high quality, very clear sound through the attached speakers. Comparing it to my older Sony amp, the sound difference is incredible. Music comes through very clear, same with movie dialogue, etc. I've also used it to stream Pandora via a wired LAN connection, and it too sounds great. However, there are some significant shortcomings to this unit.

Pros: Good HDMI audio, streams via wired LAN

Cons: No WiFi. Called Crutchfield tech support, we went over all the settings, decided it's a defective unit. Replacement unit also doesn't do wireless. Onkyo tech support kept me stuck in a voice menu loop, no human. Optical digital audio in has a noticeable delay. Remote control is very unintuitive to use for anything other than switching inputs or adjusting volume. PDF user manual has no index or table of contents.

I've been using this Onkyo for about a month now and it is fantastic. I've got it bi-amping some mid-quality speakers and I doubt I've ever heard music with better sound quality. Because it can drive 7.1 channels, I've got 4 speakers plus a woofer going which makes the sound super surreal. I keep the volume really low, between like 25 and 35, and cannot believe how much I hear. This is a really solid reciever. The wifi capabilities mean I don't have run things like pandora through a phone or anything either, which is super nice.

We returned this unit after a few days and were disappointed overall with its performance. For about the same money, the Denon S910W is a much better choice (at least for us). 2 deal breakers for us: 1) The Onkyo is really Apple unfriendly vs. Denon. The USB port on the Onkyo doesn't recognize Apple products. This is in the specs, but I guess we didn't look close enough before buying. 2) When using an internet audio source or bluetooth, you cannot select a different video source. So, say you want to listen to Sirius/XM and watch the game.....forget it. That's crazy and the Denon allows complete audio/video selection control. Also, the zone 2 control seems easier to navigate for us....not a big deal, but it's a nicer interface. We're a lot happier with the performance of the Denon.

Pros: 110 watts per channel, 7.2 surround, Dolby Atmos, WiFi, Bluetooth, 7 HDMI inputs, Zone 2 & 3 capability, AccuEQ room calibration, and 2 sub woofer outputs.

Cons: Once again, trying to set up the unit and decipher the Onkyo manual is a test of patience. And the more they design their components to be totally electronic and automatic the harder it becomes to set up a system properly. But once done - a great sound system for sure.

    Great receiver, terrible app

    Anonymous from Texas on 8/18/2015

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This receiver has been mostly great. I love having the ability to expand into three different zones for music purposes. The only problem with this is the Onkyo app. It was designed to make the user experience much easier and efficient, but poor development has only led to frustration. The app fails to connect to the receiver (via Wifi) half of the time and takes a long time to connect whenever it does happen to find the receiver. Once it has connected, the layout is very user friendly and easy to navigate. I personally use Spotify to stream music. A little under a month ago, I was able to use the Spotify app and just connect to the receiver through that interface. I guess there was an update to the Onkyo app and now I have to go through that app to play Spotify. The Spotify interface within the Onkyo app is terrible and works less than half of the time. I have since ditched trying to use the Onkyo app and use an Apple Airport Express to stream my music.

    Pros: Great features 3 Zones

    Cons: Terrible App

Replaced a Samsung Blu Ray receiver and speaker set with this because the Samsung was flaking out and switching inputs randomly. I have an Onkyo 709 for the downstairs set up and after calling Samsung and Crutchfield about the problems with that receiver I decided to jump on a real surround receiver. I already knew what I was getting and am well pleased with the product in all areas. The price was less than I paid for my 709 and I expect the same service and reliability out of the 737, which is basically the same as the 709 with updates to output versatility. It sounds so much better than what was in place and the Samsung has been relegated to doing duty as a blu ray and netflix player. Thanks to the Crutchfield team!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Read every review, Crutchfield. The receiver cannot be as powerful as advertised. It is finicky about when and how it works, clicking on and off at will. No lighted selectors on unit, the remote is small and not up to par with my 24 yr old Sony. Good luck programing remote. Owners manual, basic, is poorly written and advanced manual has to be viewed on line or downloaded. It is big, needs lots of space. Connected easily to wifi but the menu for preloaded stations is difficult to maneuver. It was a good price and that is why I am giving it a little time. Some of the difficulties may be my, "remember the good old days attitude." Regardless, I work with computers everyday and still found this receiver annoying to setup and operate. When I called for technical support the tech simply did what I did and opened the "advanced" manual online. After ONE HOUR and TWENTY SIX minutes the tech offered to give me a return authorization # even though we did not know the receiver had any problems. He and I just did not know how to operate the receiver. Called back later and another tech figured it out with me. If you call for help ask for someone who has experience with this unit.

Pros: Price, connected to wifi easily and tech help was patient

    Cons: See above

I had to replace my Marantz as it had an odd POP noise at times. I read online it was common. I feel like buying a Marantz is like buying a BMW; the best looking receiver, just keep your fingers crossed it doesn't break. I'm a previous Onkyo owner (3rd one now) and only had good luck. I should have stuck with it. One thing this has that the Marantz didn't is a viewable volume level. The Marantz only has a tiny circle which you cannot see from your media chairs (or couch). The sound is also far superior here as I'm getting far better imagine for things like a helicopter flying over. I run a full Definitive Technologies 8080 setup and the sound is now perfect!

Pros: Easy to read volume. Far superior sound. Onkyo quality. Easy setup.

    Cons: None so far.

I upgraded from a nonHDMI input Onkyo receiver to the Onkyo TX-NR737. What an improvement! Having my HDMI components run to the receiver and one out to the TV simplified my connections. It also improved the sound quality immensely. My kids think streaming music to the stereo via Bluetooth is the best feature. The only problem I have had is it won't recognize my MacBook Pro when the "PC" input is selected. Overall, I would rate this receiver as "why did I wait so long to upgrade."

Crutchfield tech support was there to help get me connected. Great company. I have purchased several items from them. Would highly recommend Crutchfield.

Pros: This receive has a lot to offer anyone in the market for a replacement. I have had a Kenwood, Sony, and Pioneer And by far this is the best. Love that its built in with Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, no additional adapters to purchase unlike other brands. Zone 2 allows you to run additional speakers to other rooms inside and outside while someone is watching tv in the main room.

Cons: Wish it came with more detailed instructions. You must download the advanced manual to understand all that this receiver has to offer. It is a little difficult to set up but Onkyo and Crutchield were great walking me through it.

Took an afternoon or so to get everything hooked up and set up just right but that was expected. I have it set up for 7.1 now but will switch to Atmos when more/some streaming content is available. Great complement to my new Sony 70" 4k tv. Audio return on the main HDMI cable works great for Netflix downloads to the tv and the receiver automatically senses and switches over to this audio imput. An unexpected surprise since I did not read that on the spec sheet! All I can say is WOW! Everything looks and sounds fabulous. The only thing better than this receiver is the Crutchfield customer service. I have called 2 times now with set-up questions and they have been terrific! I am a very happy and loyal customer!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this receiver as a replacement for my 28-year old receiver (yes, you read that correctly). What was completely unexpected was the incredible sound quality of the Onkyo. My old receiver was top-of-the-line when I bought it, and sound quality is the thing for me. I don't have a lot of sophisticated video requirements, though the Onkyo is superb in that respect as well. I had been thinking about replacing the old receiver for quite some time, and when I saw this on sale, I decided it was time. When I hooked up the new receiver, I couldn't believe the difference. If you've been thinking about upgrading your retro gear, I think you'll be very pleased with this receiver.

    Pros: Sound quality

Cons: The on-screen set-up could be a little more user-friendly and interactive.

I replaced a 7 year old Pioneer Elite receiver with the Onkyo TX-NR737. The Pioneer was almost twice the price when new and was THX,1080P upscaling, etc. The setup on the new Onkyo was SUPER EASY! The surround sound is better, not necessarily louder, just better dispersion. It seems they have figured out that the surround speakers need a lively center channel for dialogue and equal power front and rear. I have the Onkyo connected to my PC via an HDMI and am using the built in wifi to connect to the internet apps on the receiver. Setting up the remote to work with all of my existing remotes was a snap. Setting up the second room audio was easy as well. From unboxing to having everything plugged in and configured took me two hours. The old Pioneer took two days to set everything up. The biggest bonus with the Onkyo and the thing I didn't expect was that the Onkyo receiver gives our 1080P TV a noticeably better picture! Much sharper and well defined images. My wife's response was WOW the picture is WAY better! Overall the Onkyo has impressed me with it's ease of setup, picture and sound quality, and clean looks. The only things I would change are a remote with lighted buttons would be nice and I wish it had a switched A/C outlet in the back.

Pros: Ease of setup, picture and sound quality, clean quality looks.

Cons: Remote is difficult to see in low light. Needs a switched A/C outlet for my powered subwoofer.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Have to go right in the middle on this review for now. Just got it. Set it up no problem with the important exception that the wi fi didn't work properly even when it showed 100% signal. The signal came and went as it pleased. I need it VERY stable so I can run the Onkyo remote app which requires wi fi and my house remote control which uses the IP control this amp offers. Everything worked great while in those brief times when wi fi WAS working however. Crutchfield was great when I reported it. They are sending a replacement no charge both ways. Assuming the wi fi works on the new one I'll give the unit very high marks because everything else about it is great.

Pros: Great feature set. Easy set up. Crutchfield as the vendor.

Cons: Assuming the wi fi works on the replacement unit I will have no cons to report.

After owning Yamaha, and onkyo previous models, I really have to say I love this new onkyo 737. I didn't think that the THX would mean anything but having the THX modes on this receiver is sooo, cool. I glad I upgraded from the 636 . However, saying these things,if you look at the features for 636,737,and 838,there really isn't a noticeable difference other then the THX goodies. I say go for it. You don't like it , return it.

Pros: A lot of power , thx modes. The sound.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was very happy with my original TX-NR606, but was definitely looking to upgrade the on-screen functionality on my new receiver. I alsow wanted to make sure the device is 'future proof'. The 737 has ATMOS, 4K pass-through and updated HDMI copy protection that should hold me through until the next leep frog technology. I will definitely be upgrading my room to ATMOS, but is currently a 7.1 configuration. The 737 has wifi, but I decided to use regular Ethernet instead. The unit is larger than my 606 and will generate more heat, so I had to move some components and gave it a large space to allow heat to flow away. I was able to view the sources and use the on screen display to walk through the other settings. It took a little playing around to learn the key sequence to enter the setup mode on the remote. I'm happy with the on-screen display, it really takes some of the guess work out of switching systems. The input source is right on the screen, and I like seeing what the volume level without having to squint to the equipment rack. I really like the IntellaView feature. It is a Picture In Picture for your video sources. I can be watching Cable and see what's happening on TIVO and then easily switch to it. Sound quality is very good. The decoding for movies is excellent and the amplifier matches nicely with my Polk speakers. I did need to adjust some of the channel levels, but this was easy. I was able to stream Sirius easily and so far it has worked as expect

Pros: Future proof features, Picture in picture that works, great sounding amplifier and decoder

Cons: Surround setting for sporting events is not as good as Yamaha, stadium sound setting is sub par in the Onkyo

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a great upgrade, considering Crutchfield's sale price and the ability to decode Dolby ATMOS programming. The unit walks you through an easy setup procedure (which, of course you can return to in the future for tweaking). I have a simple 5.1 setup now, but plan on adding ATMOS speakers (WIDE or HEIGHT) soon to take advantage of some newer Blu-Ray ATMOS content. On this model, you will have to perform an upgrade to the latest firmware to get the ATMOS (and other) features. The process is well- written on the Onkyo web site, and took me about 30 min. The unit has plenty of power, however, the volume really doesn't start being audible until about "40" on a scale to 100, from there it ramps up predictably, and we find a good movie needs to be at about 65 - 75 for good surround effect. We are using Infinity Primus towers for L-R,,matched with an Infinity Center speaker, Polk Audio TL-2's for our surround, and anInfinity 12"powered sub. A nice feature is the ARC, or audio return channel on the main HDMI output - this mated with an ARC on our TV HDMI-In allows for streaming services from the TV to transmit their sound to the Onkyo. Another nice feature is the network- ready nature of this receiver, both WIFI and Ethernet are included. Supports DLNA, so a networked drive now serves up our music; or use a Bluetooth connection from your phone or tablet to stream music to the Onkyo. Still learning some functions, but this is one great receiver that fits our sound needs.

Pros: WIFI, Bluetooth, ATMOS capable, THX Select 2, ARC, HDCP 2.2 on one HDMI port, banana jacks

Cons: Remote not back-lit, runs a little hot (use a small fan), not small speaker connector friendly (interfere with each other)

    Great so far

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Purchased receiver to drive a 3.1 SVS system. So can't speak for multi-zone or 7.1 capabilities. Auto-microphone set-up was easy and quick. Microphone cord was just barely long enough for my living room but worked fine. Receiver easy to set up and use. UI is fairly straight-forward and only a little dated looking. Perfectly functional though, I've found. The Spotify integration works very well and the addition of receiver volume control from the app (Samsung Galaxy Note 4) makes it my go to listening app. Plenty of power from the receiver for my needs.

Pros: App integration, auto-calibration easy to use, plenty of power for medium room and bookshelf speakers

Cons: Only minor quibbles: Receiver won't win any styling awards. Takes a bit longer to power up than some receivers I've had (10-20 seconds). Display doesn't auto-adjust to room brightness. Initial firmware update takes about 20 minutes.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I've had this receiver a little over a week now. I love it! I get clear, clean music even up to the point where listening becomes painful. Once again, Onkyo has built a winner. I've been using and upgrading their products for over 30 years now and have never once been disappointed. In fact, I'm still using the old Onkyo PL-25F turntable I picked up new in 1985. I can't yet speak about the video qualities of this receiver since I'm still in the process of building the home theater system that I want, but the audio qualities of this receiver are fantastic! You can tune this receiver to any musical tastes you have. They even put in an "unplugged" music option for those types of acoustic CDs you may have in your collection. You can set the soundstage up any way you like with this receiver. The THX is fabulous on music and definitely alone worth the extra money more that you pay over the next lower model in Onkyo's product line. Vinyl sounds wonderful if you were one of those people who religiously used your Discwasher on your LPs back in the 70s. If you've been watching this receiver for a while as I had, snag it now while it's still on sale before the price goes back. At the price right now, it's like you're getting free THX thrown into the deal.

Pros: Worth every cent at full price. On sale, you can't find a better deal going right now, but that won't last long.

Cons: None that I can see at the present time.

Onkyo TX-NR737 - Great Receiver for the Price

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this receiver to replace an aging Onkyo FX-SR805. I had three reasons to upgrade at this time; first I was out of HDMI inputs and needed more, secondly I wanted 4K upscaling and to be prepared for the changes coming in 4K security in the future, and thirdly my receiver in my office/shop did not have any HDMI technolgy so i wanted to replace it with the FX-SR805. The TX-NR737 runs a lot cooler and is smaller and weighs less than my the SR805. Installation was a breeze. Before I bought the NR737 I read several reviews which had some negative things to say about Onkyo calibration. All I can tell you is my experience has been nothing but positive. The calibration went great and I checked all the settings afterward and it was spot on. Sound is extremely good. I suspect if you compare most of the brand name receivers sound you or I would not notice a difference so look at the features offered and what fits your needs. For me, I was concerned about being 4K ready. That's my next purchase a 4K TV that's HDCP 2.2 Compatibile. Good luck, but you can't go wrong with Crutchfield.

    Audio Features

7 Channel Amplifier: The Onkyo TX-NR737 AV receiver features a 7-channel amplifier rated at 110 watts (into 8-ohms, at 20Hz-20kHz, with 0.08%, driving 2 channels). The AV receiver's amplifier employs WRAT, 3-Stage Inverted Darlington Circuitry, H.C.P.S, and Optimum Gain Volume Circuitry for dynamic, detailed, clear sound.

    • WRAT (Wide Range Amplifier Technology): WRAT is based around a low negative-feedback circuit topology that works to reduce signal noise and distortion across the frequency range. A "closed ground-loop circuit" design is employed, in which each circuit has a separate link to the power supply. This helps to cancel individual circuit noise and keep the ground potential free of distortion. High Instantaneous Current Capability (HICC) enables WRAT amplifiers to immediately cancel the speakers' reflex energy and instantaneously send out the next signal. The same high current better manages speaker impedance fluctuations, which can negatively affect performance.
    • 3-Stage Inverted Darlington Circuitry: The AV receiver incorporates 3-Stage Inverted Darlington Circuitry into the front & center channels. This core Onkyo technology employs a low-NFB (negative feedback) design that makes the sound more natural.
    • H.C.P.S. (High Current Power Supply): Under the anti-resonant cover of any Onkyo receiver, you'll instantly notice the High Current Power Supply (H.C.P.S.) transformer. With its huge, isolated power supply design and high-capacity filter capacitors, it delivers the large amounts of power necessary for reproducing the wide dynamics of movie soundtracks and the detail and clarity of your music.
    • Optimum Gain Volume Circuitry: Optimum Gain Volume Circuitry adjusts the gain so that less than half the amount of attenuation is needed, ensuring the signal never comes close to the noise floor. This protects the signal against noise, resulting in a dramatically clearer sound.

Amplifier Assignment: The 7-channel amplifier can be configured in a variety of ways to match your type of speaker setup.

    • Normal (7.2ch): The Onkyo TX-NR737 provides 7.2ch surround in your main listening area. You can choose either Surround Back or Front Height speakers (but not both).
    • Front Bi-Amp (5.2ch): The Surround-Back/Front-High speaker terminals can be reassigned and used along with the Front terminals to bi-amp the front speakers, providing improved bass & treble performance. When bi-amping the front speakers the receiver is limited to a 5.2ch speaker system in the main room (no Surround Back or Front Height speakers)
    • Powered Zone 2 (7.2ch + Zone 2): In this configuration, you can connect Front, Center, Surround, Surround Back (or Front Height), and Zone 2 speakers to the AV receiver. When Zone 2 is off, all seven channels will be used in the Main Zone. However, when Zone 2 is on, power to the two surround back (or front height) channels will be directed to the two speakers in Zone 2 and the Main Zone will receive only five channels of power.
    • Dolby Atmos (w/ Firmware Update): The Surround-Back/Front-High speaker terminals are assigned to power a pair of overhead ceiling speakers or a pair of Dolby Atmos-enabled speakers to create 5.2.2ch Dolby Atmos surround sound. Zone 2 speaker can still be powered by the receiver in the configuration. When Zone 2 is off, all seven channels will be used in the Main Zone for Dolby Atmos. However, when Zone 2 is on, power to the Dolby Atmos channels will be directed to the two speakers in Zone 2 and the Main Zone will receive only five channels of power without Dolby Atmos.

192kHz/24-bit DACs + Dual 32-Bit DSP Processing: This Onkyo TX-NR737 is equipped with 192kHz/24-bit Burr-Brown DACs to decode and playback high-resolution recordings with less jitter and  clearer sound. The receiver also employs powerful and highly accurate Dual 32-bit processing DSP's (Digital Signal Processor) for better surround sound reproduction.

PLL (Phase Locked Loop): PLL jitter-cleaning circuit technology reduces jitter by comparing the input and output phases of the digital signal and creating an accurate clock waveform. This enhances the precision of digital signal processing and noticeably improves audio quality. Jitter-cleaning technology works both for digital signals input via HDMI and for digital signals converted from analog signals inside the receiver itself

AccuEQ Room Calibration: Calibrating the sound to suit your room's acoustics is simple with Onkyo's AccuEQ auto-room calibration. Once you've connected your speakers, plug-in the included mic and wait a few moments as the TX-NR737 measures things such as speaker distance, type, crossover, and output, taking into account any reflections from your walls and floor. The system is designed specifically to by-pass your front left and right speakers. The system then optimizes the frequency response of the remaining speakers so you can enjoy balanced surround sound regardless of room shape or furnishing while retaining the characteristics of your front left and right speakers for optimum enjoyment

Multi-Channel Decoding Formats: The Onkyo TX-NR737 AV receiver supports the following multi-channel (Dolby Digital, DTS, Dolby Pro Logic) decoding formats.

Note: Dolby Digital and DTS listening modes can only be selected if your audio source is connected to the A/V receiver via a digital audio connection (HDMI, optical, or coaxial). To enjoy true 7.1ch Dolby Digital TrueHD and DTS-HD surround sound, the receiver must be connected to your Blu-ray player via HDMI.

Dolby Atmos: The TX-NR737 receiver isDolby Atmos (5.2.2ch) compatible through a firmware update from Onkyo's website.Dolby Atmos combines traditional home theater speaker layouts with either ceiling-mounted speakers or new Dolby Atmos-enabled speakers to create a plane of sound above the listener. The impact of either in-ceiling or Dolby Atmos-enabled speakers is breathtaking. Your room fills with realistic, multidimensional sound that places you directly in the center of the entertainment experience.

    • Ceiling Mounted Speakers: Ceiling speakers are used for maximizing effects in Dolby Atmos listening mode. Install these speakers midway between the position just above the listening position and the position just above the front speakers, or simply install them just above the listening position.
    • Dolby Enabled Speakers: There are two types of Dolby Enabled Speakers; one is to be placed on the top board of other
speakers such as front speakers and surround speakers; the other is integrated within the front or surround speakers. Dolby Enabled Speakers are designed with their output facing toward the ceiling to create an elevated audio effect in the Dolby Atmos mode by providing sounds echoing off the ceiling.
Note: Globally, more than 100 cinema blockbusters have been released featuring Dolby Atmos soundtracks in the past two years, and many more are on the way. Major Hollywood studios are partnering with Dolby to create home video versions of both current box office releases and previously released favorites for release starting in 2014.

Dolby Surround: Dolby Surround offers an enhanced cinema experience to your Dolby Digital (Plus/TrueHD) and DTS (ES/HD) movie soundtracks using your existing 7.1ch or Dolby Atmos speaker setup. Dolby Surround enhances audio definition by improving the spatial dimension and overall audio definition of movie soundtracks. It does this by using four distinct surround zones that provide greater control over the exact placement of each detail in a movie sound track, so audio can be matched more accurately to the video on screen; this means more depth and greater realism for your movies. As a result, individual sounds are clearer and more distinct. It also improves the surround sound experience across the entire theater by widening the listening "sweet spot".

THX Select 2 Plus Certified: The TX-NR737 AV receiver is THX Select 2 Plus certified. Founded by George Lucas, THX develops stringent standards that ensure movies are reproduced in movie theaters and home theaters just as the director intended. From early design concepts to product rollout, THX works with its manufacturing partners at each step of product development. Every detail is meticulously mapped to the THX performance standards. And THX engineers spend countless hours testing and analyzing each product for sound quality, usability and interoperability. The result of this collaborative process is a THX Certified receiver, amplifier or pre-amplifier designed from the ground-up to present your favorite movies, music, and games in 5.1ch to 7.1ch surround sound loud and clear at studio reference volumes. THX Select 2 Plus is specified for rooms where the screen-to-seat viewing distance is 10-12 feet and the room volume is 3,000 cubic feet or greater.

    • THX Surround EX: The THX Surround EX mode further expands 5.1ch sources for 6.1ch or 7.1ch playback.
    • THX Loudness Plus: THX Loudness Plus compensates for the tonal and spatial shifts that occur when the volume is reduced by intelligently adjusting ambient surround channel levels and frequency response. With THX Loudness Plus, home theater audiences can experience the rich details in a surround mix at any volume level.

Onkyo Original DSP Modes: Onkyo's Original DSP Modes, combined with Dolby Digital/DTS/Dolby Pro Logic processing, produce more realistic, powerful sound effects for your movie and music sound tracks based on the type of content and your home theater setup. You can choose from the following:

    • Orchestra: For classical or operatic music.
    • Unplugged: For acoustic instruments, vocals, and jazz.
    • Studio-Mix: Suitable for rock or pop.
    • TV Logic: Adds realistic acoustics to TV shows.
    • Game: The receiver offers four different Gaming modes - RPG, Action, Rock, and Sports.
    • All Ch Stereo: Stereo sound from all speakers. Ideal for background music.
    • Full Mono: All speakers output the same sound in mono.
    • Theater-Dimensional (T-D): Theater-Dimensional circuitry takes the complexity out of conventional surround-sound setups and lets you experience the excitement of surround sound from as few as two ordinary speakers. Theater-Dimensional's unique multi-speaker modes let you place up to five speakers conveniently by the TV, for the most realistic virtual-surround sound possible.

Direct Mode: In Direct mode, audio from the input source is output without surround-sound processing. This mode delivers pure sound with minimum sound quality adjustment and filtration.

Surround Parameters: The Onkyo TX-NR737 lets you tweak and fine tune specific surround sound modes to suit your preference.

    • Dolby Pro Logic II Music Settings: While listening in the Dolby Pro Logic II Music format, there are three further enhancements you can adjust; Panorama: (broadens the front stereo image to the surround speakers to provide a wraparound effect), Dimension (allows you to move the sound field forward or backward), and Center Width (allows you to adjust the width of the center channel).
    • Center Image: In the Neo:6 Music mode, the Center Image feature adjusts the output of the left and right channels relative to the center channel, allowing you to make the center channel more or less dominant as needed. This improves the image of the center channel, especially when the listener is off-center. Adjustment varies from 5 (nothing subtracted from the L/R channels) to 0 (L/R channel output is cut in half).
    • Pro Logic IIz Height Gain: The Height Gain Control in Dolby Pro Logic IIz enables the listener to select how much gain is applied to the front high speakers. There are three settings, "Low", "Mid" and "High", and the front high speakers are accentuated in that order. While "Mid" is the default listening setting, the listener may adjust the Height Gain Control to their personal preference.
    • Listening Angle: While listening in the Theater Dimensional mode you can adjust the listening angle to either Wide (if listening angle is 40°) or Narrow (if listening angle is 20°).

Audio Enhancements: The Onkyo TX-NR737 receiver provides various audio enhancements to deliver a high-quality listening experience every time.

    • CinemaFilter: Using the CinemaFilter you soften overly bright movie soundtracks. Movie soundtracks are typically mixed for a large theater (relative to your home theater) with lots of soft seats and thick curtains on the walls. Home theater settings often lack these high frequency absorbing wall treatments, making the soundtrack sound too bright. CinemaFilter accounts for this and for many movies sounds more natural at home.
    • Music Optimizer: The Music Optimizer function enhances the sound quality of compressed music files. The Music Optimizer function only works with PCM digital audio input signals with a sampling rate below 48kHz and analog input signals.
    • Late Night Feature: The Late Night feature limits the dynamic range of Dolby Digital recordings. Limiting the dynamic range makes it easier to find a volume that ensures the quiet sounds are not too quiet and the loud sounds are not too loud for night time listening. This allows you to comfortably listen to without the need to constantly adjust the volume to keep from waking family/neighbors. The choices are: Off, Low, and High. This feature only works with Dolby Digital Encoded software and the depth of the feature will vary based on the individual software package.

Bass Management: The Onkyo AV receiver offers Tone Control and Phase Matching Bass technology to get the most bass impact out of your system.

    • Tone Controls: You can independently adjust the Bass (50Hz) and Treble (20kHz) of the TX-NR737 from -10 to +10 dB.
    • Phase Matching Bass: Onkyo's Phase-Matching Bass optimizes low frequencies while preserving mid-range clarity. This means that powerful bass plays back with clear vocals; it doesn't overpower them.
    • Double Bass: You can also activate the Double Bass function in order to boost bass output even more by feeding bass sounds to the front left/right speakers, center-channel, and powered subwoofer.

Volume Setup: The Onkyo AV receiver provides the following volume settings.

    • IntelliVolume: With IntelliVolume, you can set the input level for each input (+/-12dB) selector individually. This is useful if one of your source components is louder or quieter than the others. This function does not work in Zone 2.
    • Maximum Volume: Use this feature to set the receiver's maximum volume level. This feature is useful to avoid turning the volume too loud by mistake. You can set the Max Volume from 30-79 (max), or Off (disabled).
    • Power On Volume: Use this feature to set the volume level when the power is turned on. You can choose between Last (same as the volume when the unit was turned off), Min (0), or 1-79.
    • Headphone Level: With this setting, you can specify the headphone volume (+/-12dB) relative to the main volume. This is useful if there's a volume difference between your speakers and your headphones.

Audio Inputs/Outputs: The Onkyo AV receiver offers a variety of analog and digital audio inputs/outputs.

    • Assignable Digital Inputs: The Onkyo receiver is equipped with one optical digital input and two coaxial digital inputs. All three digital inputs are assignable. You can choose auto decoding , PCM, or DTS for the digital audio inputs. Auto will decode the signal in its original form (Dolby Digital, DTS, PCM, etc), PCM decodes the signal to 2-channel, while DTS decodes only DTS formatted sources.
    • Phono Input: The Onkyo AV receiver is fitted with a Phono input and ground terminal for connection of a turntable (MM).
    • Binding-Post Speaker Terminals: There are color-coded binding-post terminals for all speaker connections - Front, Center, Surround, Surround Back/Front Height, and Zone 2. The binding post terminals will accept bare-wire, pin-connectors, and banana plugs (single/dual). Use 4- to 16-ohm speakers.
    • Dual Subwoofer Outputs: The receiver is fitted with two subwoofer outputs to connect dual powered subs for extra bass. The dual outputs share the same input signal and are not discrete.
    • Headphones: When headphones are plugged into the full-size 1/4" jack on the front panel, all the speakers are automatically muted.

    Video Features

However, depending on the type of data or audio format used by the Internet radio station, you may not be able to listen to some stations.

You can store a combination of up to 40 of your favorite FM/AM radio stations as presets. You can also tune directly to a specific station by using the numeric keypad on the included remote control.

Firmware Updates: Future firmware updates are available from the Onkyo website through the receiver's Network or USB connection. The tested TX-NR737 contained firmware version 1020-2110-0001-0200-0001 (as of 5/1/2014). Visit Onkyo's online Download Center for the latest firmware updates.

    Convenience Features

On-Screen Menu w/ Setup Assistance: The Onkyo AV receiver offers an on-screen (GUI) menu system through its HDMI output. The simple on-screen display combines text and graphics that make setup and other operations extremely easy. The initial setup assistant takes you step-by-step through speaker configuration, source connection, remote programming, and network connection. If your TV is connected to the composite video or component video monitor output, you will need to use the AV receiver's front-panel display when changing settings.

Note: Initial setup requires that the receiver be connected to your TV via HDMI for display of the on-screen menu. Many of the receiver's setup functions can only be found via the on-screen menu and not the front-panel display.

Multi-Source/Multi-Zone: The TX-NR737 offers three Zones; a multi-channel audio/video system in your main listening room (Main Zone), a stereo audio only system in a second room (Zone 2), and another stereo audio only system in a third room (Zone 3).

    • Zone 2 (Speaker-/Line-Level Output): Zone 2 allows playback of a separate analog source in 2-channel stereo in an additional room of your home. Zone 2 features line-level outputs and speaker outputs. This way, Zone 2 can be powered by a separate integrated amplifier (keeping 7.2ch playback in your main room) or by the TX-NR737's built-in amplifier (limiting the main room to 5.2ch). When powering Zone 2 with the receiver's built-in amplifier, listening modes that require surround back or front high/wide speakers are unavailable. You cannot power Zone 2 with the receiver's built-in amplifier, if you are bi-amping your front speakers. The volume of Zone 2 is controlled from the receiver when using the speaker outputs and from your add-on integrated amp when using the line-level outputs.
    • Zone 3 (Line-Level Output): Zone 3 allows playback of a separate analog source in 2-channel stereo in a third room of your home. Zone 3 features line-level outputs only. This way, Zone 3 can be powered by a separate integrated amplifier (keeping 7.2ch playback in your main room). The volume of Zone 3 will be controlled by your separate integrated amp's remote.
Note: Compatible Sources -Only Tuner, Analog, USB, Bluetooth, and Network audio sources can be sent to Zone 2 or Zone 3. As for Network, USB, and Bluetooth sources; you cannot select different inputs for the main room and Zone 2/3. For example, if a Network source been selected in the main room and then a USB is selected as playback source in Zone 2/3, the input in the main room will also change to the USB source. When listening to AM/FM radio, you cannot select different stations for the main room and Zone 2/3. Incompatible Sources - Optical/coaxial digital and HDMI audio sources are not output to Zone 2/Zone 3. You cannot output any video signal to Zone 2 or Zone 3.

Whole House Mode: The Whole House Mode is useful when you want to simply add extra background music to your home party. This mode allows you to enjoy the same stereo music as the main room in separate rooms (Zone 2/3). The Whole House Mode selects the same input source for Zone 2/3 as the main room. During the Whole House Mode, stereo playback is automatically selected for all zones. The Main Zone & Zone 2/3 will play at the same volume level.

Name Edit: You can enter a custom name for each individual input selector and radio preset for easy identification. When entered, the custom name will appear on the display. This function cannot be used for the AM/FM, Network, USB, and Bluetooth input selectors.

Display Dimmer + Screen Saver: The display brightness has three settings; Dim, Dimmer, and Normal.  If there is no video signal on the current input source and no operation for a specific time, a screen saver automatically comes on. You can set the time (3min/5min/10min/off) until the screen saver activates itself. Once active, the screen saver will go off and the screen will return to its previous state if the AV receiver is operated in any way.

Timers: The receiver features a programmable Sleep Timer and Auto Standby function.

    • Auto Standby: The AV receiver will automatically go into Standby mode, if there is no operation for 20 minutes with no audio/video signal input.
    • Sleep Timer: From the remote, you can set the unit to automatically turn off after as much as 90 minutes or as little as 10 minutes; choices are presented in 10 minute increments.

    Bluetooth + Remote Control

Built-in Bluetooth: The Onkyo TX-NR737 features built-in Bluetooth (version 2.1+EDR) with support for profiles A2DP 1.2 and AVRCP 1.3. You'll be able to wirelessly stream music from your Bluetooth-enabled Apple device, Android smartphone/tablet, portable audio player, laptop, or PC to the Onkyo receiver. You will also be able to control basic playback functions (Play/Pause, FF/RW, Skip) using the receiver's remote control. Advanced music operation will still need to be handled from your Bluetooth-enable device. There is no song/artist information display on the receiver or connected TV. Continue to use your Bluetooth device's screen to view song/artist info.

Note: Due to the differences in Bluetooth technology, some Bluetooth enabled devices may be incompatible, function improperly, or may not support all features when used with the Onkyo receiver.

Onkyo Remote App (for Apple iOS & Android): The Onkyo Remote App (from iTunes Apps & Google Play) allows you to operate the Onkyo AV receiver from your Apple iOS (4.3+) or Android (2.1+) device, using your home's wireless network. The Onkyo Remote App lets you you access Internet Radio stations, AM/FM stations, DLNA content, and Input sources right from your mobile device. Content information will be displayed on the device's touchscreen. You also get to adjust tone controls, listening modes, and speaker volume from your compatible Apple iOS or Android device. The Onkyo Remote App even allows you to wirelessly stream audio stored on your Apple iOS or Android device to the Onkyo AV receiver and lets you control audio output for up to 3 Zones. The Onkyo AV receiver and and your compatible Apple iOS or Android device must be connected to the same home network.

Multi-brand Remote: The receiver comes with an IR remote control for wireless operation of this receiver and other HDMI-connected sources (via HDMI CEC). In addition to the receiver, the remote can be programmed using the receiver's on-screen menu to control popular brands of TVs, Blu-ray players, DVD players/recorders, DVRs, VCRs, etc.

HDMI Control: This function allows HDMI-CEC compatible components or RIHD-compatible components connected via HDMI to be controlled with the TX-NR737 . The AV receiver offers the following HDMI-CEC controls.

    • The AV receiver will enter Standby mode when the power of the TV is turned to Standby.
    • You can set on the menu screen of the TV to either output the audio from the speakers connected to the AV receiver, or from the speakers of the TV.
    • It is possible to output the audio/video from the antenna or from the input jack of the TV from the speakers connected to the AV receiver.
    • Input to the AV receiver can be selected with the remote controller of the TV.
    • Operations such as volume adjustment or similar for the AV receiver can be performed from the remote controller of the TV.

RI Remote Control Jack: The 1/8" RI remote control jack allows you to connect this receiver to other compatible Onkyo components.

Compared the specs, manual and upon advice about usability, this seems to be the winner over a Denon AVR-S710. For my purposes, this 2015 model may be even better than the 2016 TX-NR747, and the price was unbeatable. Thanks![ William  Jan 02, 2016 ]

I picked this receiver because of all the HDMI inputs, WiFi, Bluetooth and all the good reviews.[ Mark  Dec 18, 2015 ]
I did a lot of research on AV receivers: the primary requirement was phono capability. Onkyo has had problems in the past with their receivers' HDMI ports; my research showed that this problem has been resolved and that Onkyo receivers are some of the best on the market. Also, this particular model was sale priced, which made a huge difference with my budget. I will, however, still purchase an Onkyo extended warranty, direct from Onkyo.[ Martin  Dec 18, 2015 ]

This unit has the video component connections my older HD tv has, so it will let me continue to use this tv. While not my main tv at this point, it is important to me as it provides entertainment while I work out.[ Robert  Dec 10, 2015 ]
Price and capability was beyond my expectations. The Onkyo system receiver is superb.[ Roger  Dec 10, 2015 ]

Great sale price. Has the features I need, in particular upconversion to HDMI which supports some of the older components I have. Several other receivers in this price range did not have that feature. Plus the reviews were very good on this brand/model.[ Chris  Dec 04, 2015 ]

It won't present a problem unless you max out the receiver. You will damage your speakers before hurting the receiver. It is a fabulous receiver.[ JANICE  Dec 21, 2015 ]
No. The 100W max is for what thar individual speaker can handle. The Max power from the reciever is split between all of the speakers that are being used.[ James  Dec 21, 2015 ]

Only Bluetooth has worked for me.[ LEE  May 12, 2016 ]
You are really asking a (technologically challenged) person. The amp is great for my home theatre. I would suggest that you phone Crutchfield directly.[ David  Nov 29, 2015 ]
    Don't know[ Robert  Nov 29, 2015 ]
This receiver has a total of 8 source inputs that you can configure a few different ways which means you can connect both of those two devices using those cables and much more if you wanted. Also, this receiver has buttons on the front of it for changing sources (inputs) and you can do it from the remote as well.[ Paul  Nov 23, 2015 ]  Staff
    Sorry, I don't know the answer. I haven't tried this arrangement with my system. Barry L[ THOMAS B  Nov 21, 2015 ]
NOt sure what you are trying to do, all my stuff is hooked up with HDMI. I think you should be able to do what you are trying to do though. Receiver has all kinds of hook ups[ Charles  Nov 21, 2015 ]
I am assuming you can but I have not hooked up the system yet. Further it is part of a home theater system. Wish I could be more helpful. However, I have found Crutchfield to be great at answering such questions.Marsha[ Marsha  Nov 20, 2015 ]

I have mine hooked up as a 5.1 system with atmos speakers hooked up to the height terminal & my display will show 5.2.1 when watching an atmos movie & 5.1 on others. But it's good to check for your speaker hook-up.[ Kenneth  Jun 14, 2017 ]
I cannot answer your question as I have not worked with the new receiver very much since I purchased it-sorry I cannot help you at this time.[ WAYNE  Nov 09, 2015 ]

Yes, when you play a movie with atmos sound, in the display appear a light with a name of atmos sound[ ISMAEL RODRIGUE  Nov 06, 2015 ]
Matt. if your question is will the NR737 allow the use of a turntable, yes it should. It has RCA input for Phono. Should work fine...[ EARL  Oct 27, 2015 ]
Hi - The 737 includes a Phono input. I've never used it, but I suppose it would work just fine.7 months with the 737 and I'm still happy[ Bill  Oct 25, 2015 ]
Matt, This receiver has the ability to use a turntable without a pre amp. I selected this one for that reason. Thanks Rick K[ Richard  Oct 25, 2015 ]
    No[ MIKE  Oct 24, 2015 ]
No. It has a phono input.[ harin  Oct 24, 2015 ]
I have a turntable and it works great without a separate amplifier. It's a great receiver.[ JOHN  Oct 24, 2015 ]
No, not to my knowledge.[ Thomas  Oct 24, 2015 ]
You could hook your turntable up to any one of the RCA inputs on the rear of your receiver and/or the AUX on the front. If ur turntable has A moving magnet that means it gas a phono preamp built-in. If your turntable does not have a moving magnet, you'll need a commercially available phono preamp. If your turntable has a moving coil (mc) type cartridge, you'll need a commercially available MC head amp or MC transformer as well as a phono preamp. See your turntable's manual for details.[ TODD H  Oct 24, 2015 ]
    No[ Michael  Aug 16, 2015 ]
Not sure, but I believe so. The receiver allows for so many options.[ Thomas  Aug 15, 2015 ]
Yes, you may need to do a firmware upgrade first. Just needs a wired internet connection. Then in setup just choose "high" and not "zone 2"[ Doug  Aug 15, 2015 ]
If you do, they will not be part of the zone 1 surrounded...just connect them to zone 1 atmos[ TODD H  Aug 15, 2015 ]
Yes it has a fan look on the top right it comes on at a preset temperature setting.[ Mike  Dec 02, 2015 ]
NO, it does not. It does gets hot but not to the point of needing a fan if sitting on a shelf. But If mounted inside a cabinet or rack you might consider one if temps get high.[ Richard  Aug 05, 2015 ]
    I love my 737 jr[ JUNIOR  Jul 28, 2015 ]
We think so, but we're not sure.[ Aarin  Jul 27, 2015 ]
No fan I have detected, but it doesn't seem to get as hot as my earlier model. I love the unit except the Onkyo dweebs dropped vTuner in place of yet another crappy music service. I hope they wake up soon with that decision. Hope this helps.[ Hugh  Jul 27, 2015 ]
I don't knowEnter an answer to this question.[ ALI  Jul 27, 2015 ]
Hi: I don't know if it has a fan or not. It runs only warm to the touch in an enclosed cabinet so if there is a fan it may not be triggered. I would check with Crutchfieldl or Onkyo for their response. Sidenote: This is an Excellent av receiver![ Bruce  Jul 27, 2015 ]
No. I have mine inside a piece of furniture and it has been fine. Doesn't seem to be running very hot.[ ANDREW  Jul 27, 2015 ]
Yes. I think it comes on when temperatures reach a certain level to cool the unit.[ MICHAEL L  Jul 27, 2015 ]
NO internal fan.[ Carmen  Jul 27, 2015 ]
The obvious question is does any source work? If the other sources are working, i'd double check the input mapping.[ Bill  Jul 06, 2015 ]
    I Haven't used this feature yet.[ Ken  Jul 06, 2015 ]
Press REMOTE MODE then press HOME Select SETUP Select 1. SPEAKER SETTINGS Select POWER ZONE 2 - YES Press HOME, HOME to exit Press ZONE 2 Press POWER Select source - FM, CD , etc Volume and mute control from remote Note- easier to control from REMOTE APP on Tablet, Phone etc.[ MICHAEL  Jul 06, 2015 ]
I want to thank all the respondents - every response was helpful. To clarify - I am getting video, no audio from the TX-NR-509 and the 'NET and Update" choices on the config screen are greyed out. Many, many exactly the same issues on Google. However because of the courteous and helpful responses I have elected to give Onkyo one more try. My TX-NR737 from Crutchfield should be arriving later today. And I am psyched. Thank-you all again. Hugh[ Hugh  Jul 03, 2015 ]
Had my 737 for several months now and love it. No problems with the HDMI connections. In fact I see an improvement in picture quality over my TX-SR805 which I purchased back in 2007 and is still in use with no problems with the HDMI.[ EARL  Jul 02, 2015 ]
I Can only speak for myself, but I have had no problems with the HDMI on this model.[ Mike  Jul 02, 2015 ]
What issue are you having with the HDMI? The only problem I have is if I'm sliding the receiver around, the HDMI will temporarily lose the connection. Other than that, no issues. I had the same Onkyo receiver that you had and upgraded to the TX-NR737...I love it!! They improved on the NR509 and added more features. I am very pleased with it and for the price, wouldn't choose anything else.[ Michael  Jul 02, 2015 ]
I have the 737 and love hdmi issues[ MIKE  Jul 02, 2015 ]
HI Hugh, Iam thoroughly happy with the Onkyo TX-NR737. I have no problems with any of the HDMI connections. Great surround sound. I added a pair of Dolby Atmos enabled speakers for an incredible immersion of sound. I am sure you would be very pleased with it's performance. Good luck. John.[ JOHN  Jul 02, 2015 ]
HI Hugh. That was my concern as well before I bought my NR737. I read about the older HDMI problems. I haven't had an issues with my NR737. This receiver offers quite a bit at this price point. My hope is that Onkyo fixed the previous issues with their HDMI. So far, so good.[ Theodore  Jul 02, 2015 ]
Sonos Connect works great the the 737. You can use Toslink or Coax or RCA. The single problem is preemptive source switching. It's the achilles heel with Sonos. From the Sonos app, there is no way to have the receiver switch the the correct input.[ Bill  Jul 06, 2015 ]
Don't know, but Sonos advertises seamless operation with mainstream receivers so it should work with the Onkyo NR737.[ EARL  Jun 01, 2015 ]
Sorry Rich E I cannot answer that question for you. I do not know if it is compatible with the SONOS connect component. I wish I could be more helpful.[ MIKE  May 30, 2015 ]
We had installers set ours up but we have a center speaker, left and right speakers, sub woofer, and 2 surround speakers hooked up. It's great![ DARLENE  Mar 24, 2015 ]
    No.[ JOHN  Mar 15, 2015 ]
HII just installed the TX-NR737 There is only one HDCP2.2 input (port 3) and one output ( MAIN). There are 4 inputs that support 4K The second HDMI output is the SUB and it doesn't support the HDCP2.2Marian[ Marian  Feb 04, 2015 ]
Hi Matteo, From what I understand, the only HDCP 2.2 input is HDMI input #3. and the main HDMI output.[ marvin  Feb 03, 2015 ]
It appears that input 3 and the main output support HDCP 2.2 devices. Since I don't have any device that requires that decoding I can't test this.[ JERRY  Feb 03, 2015 ]
I forwarded your question to an Advisor and they responded with the following: I do not have an official answer as to why only one input would support HDCP 2.2 but I would imagine it has to be a cost benefit decision that them and the other manufacturers who have HDCP 2.2 compliant inputs seem to have made. I think they are most likely responding to the need for one input now and will grow as time goes by.If you would like to discuss further you can contact an Advisor directly by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat.[ Krissy  Jan 07, 2015 ]  Staff
yes. The system will auto adjust or you can enter the distances manually. I prefer the manual method.[ Ricky  Nov 04, 2015 ]
You always have the option of using Atmos front speakers that have the high directional speakers that set on top of them. The sound is deflected off the ceiling no need to cut the ceiling.[ Doug  Aug 15, 2015 ]
I don't use ceiling speakers. My system is just a robust 5.1, but I have to believe that when you first set your system up, using the provided microphone for audio system calibration, the Receiver should be able to adjust fairly well to the 1' difference between the two ceiling speakers.[ GIOVANNI L  Jan 02, 2015 ]
