Overview

Our take on the Logitech® Harmony® 950

When I brought home a Harmony remote for our home theater system a few years ago, my wife didn't understand why. She very quickly got it — as did our house sitters and overnight guests. One remote controls our entire system, simply and intuitively. The Logitech Harmony 950 remote is even easier to use than that earlier model. Its color touchscreen displays general commands, such as “Watch TV.” Tap it, and the Harmony 950 turns on the right components in the proper sequence to watch TV. You can control up to 15 devices with the remote, plus customize its touchscreen and buttons so your favorite activities are always easy to find.

One easy-to-use remote

Truly a universal remote

The remote works with over 270,000 entertainment devices from over 6,000 brands, including lighting controls, game consoles, multi-room systems, streaming devices such as Apple TV® and Roku® &mdash and the list keeps growing. If it has a remote, you can probably control it with the Harmony 950. And you can preset up to 50 of your favorite TV orcable channels, and streaming services, and even display their logos for quick identification at a glance. Just touch the Netflix icon, and the remote sends out the commands to bring up that service on your TV. Want to watch the big game? Tap the ESPN logo and let the Harmony 950 do the rest.

Simple setup

To get started, connect the Harmony 950 to your Mac® or PC with the included USB cable. Go to Logitech's MyHarmony site. It will help you program your remote by asking some simple questions about your system and how you use it. It then downloads the control codes and command sequences to your remote. The MyHarmony site saves your settings for easy updates whenever you add or change gear.

Power at the ready

The Harmony 950 comes with its own charging station that doubles as a convenient storage base. But if you forget to dock it when you're done using it, don't worry. A built-in motion sensor powers down the remote if it's motionless for a while. Pick up the Harmony 950, and it "wakes up" instantly. That way, your remote won't run out of juice just sitting on the coffee table.

Great remote - easy to configure and use

Eric from Parker, CO on 2/7/2018

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I've owned numerous Logitech Harmony remotes over the years, and this was one that I purchased to control all my components in my newly finished basement. My most recent Logitech remote prior to this was a Harmony One. That remote has served me well for a number of years, but the older software required to configure it was clunky to say the least. The new software for the Harmony 950 is outstanding, and very easy to use. That being said, I am a technically savvy user and enjoy working with this kind of stuff, so maybe I'm not representative of everyone, but for my needs it was perfect. I was able to configure the remote in less than 5 minutes, and it worked the first time I tried it on the new equipment. The remote itself has a nice weight to it, and the layout of the buttons below the touch screen is the right configuration - something that Logitech didn't do on other remotes. The charging cradle is solid as well, and everything looks very sleek and high tech, adding a cool factor to your home entertainment setup.

Pros: Easy to configure and use Works with equipment seamlessly Good key and touchscreen layout

Cons: None

Craig from Butler, NJ on 12/15/2017

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Always a big fan of Harmony remotes! Easy to program and use. Sure, every now and again you need to pull out the actual component remote for some fine tweaking, but overall once set up this remote can do mostly everything you would need for everyday duties! Their best remote so far!

Pros: Easy to program and use.

Cons: None

I bought the 950 To qreplace the Harmony 1100 which Logitech no longer makes. The 950 is not as good as the 1100 but it does the job. Only con is the sprees of the beam is not as broad as the 1100 It works best if Ll your devices are close together. Very easy to setup

The 950 is a breeze to set up and once the devices are programmed, just walk thru the questions on what you want to do and load them to the Harmony. It's that simple!

Really Nice Device

Lou from Portland, OR on 4/11/2017

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

First of all, the device was extremely easy to set up. Partly because we already had a Harmony One device that we were upgrading. With the My Harmony application, it was as simple as adding the device and then syncing the current settings. Second, the touch screen is a little larger than the Harmony One and is very quick to respond. That being said, the screen is very sensitive to touch and you could be watching TV only to be listening to the radio because of a touch. It also take a while to get used to the number pad not being available at the bottom of the device. I don't consider this to be a negative, just a learning curve for us. All-in-all, I like the Harmony 950 very much and once we get used to it's functionality, it's a welcome addition.

Pros: Ease of setup On screen displays

Cons: Screen sensitivity but not enough to mark the device down in star quality

The Remote that is ready for home automation, beyond just entertainment devices. Huge , dynamic database to draw on

Pros: Covers most all consumer entertainment products current and future.

Harmony 950

Tom from Enfield, CT on 2/7/2017

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Nice remote, but not as fine as my old Harmony One. Setup is easy buy following the on screen instructions. The lack of an indept instruction manual forces you to experiment to achieve the desired result. Numbers are on a separate screen which is inconvenient at times. All in all, I like the 950 otherwise I would have sent it back. It works well and does what is supposed to do.

Pros: Easy setup, backlighted keyboard, rechargeable.

Cons: Lack of an indept manual, small keys, numbers on screen

Easy programming, but absolutely worthless touch touchscreen. It takes 2-5 "punches" on the screen to make it do what you want it to do, if it ever recognizes the touch. You can manually turn on and off your components in the same amount of same. The remote is no longer living.

I loved being able to take 4 remotes and move them in to one! The software to set up the remote was easy to use and really allowed you to customize the settings and functions of each button. Give yourself a couple of hours to get things set up and fine tuned. The back lit buttons are easy to see when the lights are off watching a movie and the battery on the remote lasts a long time!

Pros: easy to set up, convenient, customizable

Cons:

Logitech® Harmony® 950

David from Phoenix, AZ on 1/23/2017

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The remote does control multiple electronic equipment as advertised. It is easy to program however it can only perform those tasks which you can do with the supplied manufacturers remote. It cannot get into the setup menus of the equipment so it may be limiting. I needed to turn ARC on and off on my TV, and HDMI control on and off on my Receiver Amp and was unable to do this. The battery uses up quickly so you need to store it in its caddie or else it will be dead when you need it. The touch screen is too sensitive and to small and its icons are too small. It is typical to want to turn on one thing and wind up with another. I got this for my wife who hates remotes and it serves her purpose since she never does anything more than turn the TV on and off. I prefer an owners manuals which is not included with this unit.

Dissapointed

Dr Mike from Redondo Beach, CA on 12/28/2016

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Bottom line: Disappointment. I am a bit biased. I own the Harmony One which is probably the best remote ever made, by anyone. Well the volume button stopped working so I needed a replacement. The Harmony 950 was the closest equivalent I could find. It is probably good enough for most people, but if you have used the "One" then you will likely be disappointed. The remote requires two handed use. It has a touch screen that scrolls and you cannot scroll with one hand. Believe me I tried. There are no number buttons on the remote, but you can bring up numbers on the screen by scrolling the touch screen to the left, twice. I think the designers concept was that you would all of your favorite channels in the touch screen as icons and then use the icons to select a channel. That turns out to be useless since I do not watch shows live - I record everything I watch and watch it when I want. Setting up a show to record requires - you guessed it - a number pad. I gave it three stars because first, the software to set up the remote assumes the user is a 3 year old - setup is a impatiently long series of idiot menus instead of a single screen to set up everything all at once. Second the IR transmitter is weak and has a very narrow field. My equipment is 2 feet apart and it cannot seem to transmit to both the TV and AV receiver without me having to re-aim the remote at the proper time. (with the "One" I could bounce the IR signal off the opposite wall).

Pros: It is good enough for most people. The remote charging station is well designed with a snug fit.

Cons: Over priced givens its short comings. Poor layout of functions. Important functions buried in menus. No help button (buried in a menu). If someone walks in front of the remote while turning on an activity, you are SOL. Best bet is to turn everything off and start again - built in features to fix problems will take much longer. Not a Harmony One replacement.

This is my third Harmony remote and by far the best. The build quality is great and the software has gotten even easier to use and customize. There's a bit of a learning curve with any Universal Remote but you won't go wrong with the model 950 in my opinion.

Pros: Sturdy and well made with improved software. Great functionality

Cons: Minor and applies to all Universal Remotes having a bit of a learning curve.

Features

Harmony 950 Universal Remote Control: The Harmony 950 universal remote control provides maximum flexibility for operating your home entertainment gear. You can control up to 15 different devices from the Harmony 950 universal remote. The remote measures 5.4375" (w) x 3.9375" (h) x 19.25" (d).

Desktop Software Setup: The Harmony 950 is programmed by connecting the universal remote to your laptop or desktop computer using the supplied USB cable, and downloading the MyHarmony desktop software. The MyHarmony desktop software will guide you through entering the manufacturer and model numbers of your home devices so the Harmony 950 understands how to control them. It then helps you create your Watch TV Activity (or scene) for one-button control.

Note: The Harmony database has over 270,000 electronic devices from over 6,000 manufacturers.

System Requirements: Your PC or computer will need to meet the following system requirements.

  • Windows-based PC:
    • Microsoft Windows Vista, 7, 8, or 10
    • USB type-A port
    • Internet access
  • Intel-based Mac Computer:
    • Macintosh OS X 10.7 or later
    • USB type-A port
    • Internet access

Learning Function: In addition to the devices which can be entered using the web interface, this remote can also learn most functions of other infrared remotes.

Infrared (IR): The Harmony 950 controls your devices using infrared (IR) light meaning that there must be a direct line of sight between the Harmony remote and your component's IR eye or external IR receiver. The remote has an IR transmission range of up to 50'.

2.4" Full-Color Touchscreen w/ Tactile Feedback: The included remote's 2.4" full-color touchscreen gives you easy gesture control of the remote's commands and activities. The remote vibrates to give you tactile feedback when a tap, swipe or other gesture has been recognized by the remote's touchscreen. The remote's numeric keypad is located on the touchscreen.

One-Touch Controls: The Harmony 950 uses Activity Control to give you one-touch control of your home entertainment system.

  • Entertainment Activities: You can create Activities that manage how you use your devices together. For example, if you have a TV, AV receiver, and cable or satellite box, you will want to control all of these devices when you watch TV. To control all of these devices together, create a Watch TV Activity. When you have completed adding your Watch TV Activity, you can add the other Activities that you want your Harmony Ultimate to control. The types of Activities that MyHarmony offers you depends on the types of devices you have added. You can add multiple Activities based on each type of Activity offered, such as Watch TV, Watch Movie, or Play Game.
  • Custom Activities: Most Activities should fit into one of the Activity types offered. The Custom Activity type is recommended only for home appliances such as light controllers, fans, climate control devices, etc. The Custom Activity does not provide optimized defaults such as button customizations, Activity icons, and Favorite Channels as the other predefined Activity types do. These may be configured manually from MyHarmony.
  • One Touch System Off: The Off button on the Harmony 950 remote powers off all of the devices for an Activity with one touch. For example, in a Watch TV Activity that uses a TV, Cable Box, and AV Receiver, pressing the Off button will power off all three devices at the same time.
Note: The Harmony 950 knows the current state of the devices it controls by remembering the last Activity you selected. For example, if you switch from watching cable TV to watching a Blu-ray, the Harmony Ultimate knows that it doesn't need to power the TV off and back on; it just leaves the TV turned on. It also it knows that it needs to power off the cable box and power on the Blu-ray player.

Favorites: The Favorites screen allows you to view your predefined favorite TV channels and station icons (when available). Using the MyHarmony desktop software program, you can select up to 50 Favorite Channels to display on the remote. Selecting a Favorite Channel will start your "Watch TV" Activity, if it's not already started, and tune directly to that channel. Using the touchscreen, you can add, remove and reorder your Favorite Channels right on the remote.

Command Customization: The Harmony 950 remote allows you to customize the commands that each button sends, or what commands appear in your Activity list. These button mappings may be unique for each of your Activities. This allows each button or screen to have different functions based on context. For example, in your Watch a Blu-ray Activity, the yellow button may perform the eject command, while in your Listen to Music Activity this same yellow button may be used to pull up your Favorite preset.

Help: If you have a problem completing an activity function, the help button will guide you through the fix using the interactive multi-color touchscreen display.

Note: To help keep your Harmony in sync with your devices, avoid turning your television, set-top box and other devices on and off manually or by using their original remote control

Sleep Timer: Use the sleep timer feature to fall asleep and let the Harmony 950 take care of shutting down your equipment for you.

Rechargeable Battery: The Harmony 950 remote control includes a user-replaceable, rechargeable Lithium-ion battery that has 20% greater capacity than previous generation Harmony remotes.

Charging Base: The remote comes with a docking station and AC power adapter that keeps the remote's battery fully charged. The charging base measures 3.1875" (w) x 2.25" (h) x 3.875 (d).

The Harmony remotes can control just about anything that offers infrared remote capability. If your Pioneer came with an infrared wireless remote originally, the Harmony should be able to control it. It also offers a learning function so, if by any chance Harmony doesn't have the commands for your device, you can use the Pioneer's remote to "teach" the Harmony how to control it. I hope that helps. My Bio: http://www.crutchfield.com/Support/Bio.aspx?bio=5 [ Ryan  Sep 17, 2016 ]  Staff
