Soundmatters Fox Lv2

The Soundmatters foxLv2 is small enough to take with you anywhere

Sure, you can easily slip the compact Soundmatters foxLv2 Bluetooth speaker system into your pocket — but portabilty is only half the story. This sleek, platinum-finish system delivers truly amazing sound from your smartphone or computer.

Bluetooth for wireless music and talk

The system features advanced CSR aptX® circuitry to receive uncompressed Bluetooth signals from compatible devices, such as Apple® computers running Snow Leopard or Lion, or select Sennheiser Bluetooth dongles. You'll enjoy remarkably clean, clear sound from the foxL.

Don't have aptX in your device? No problem. The foxLv2 works with virtually all Bluetooth-enabled devices, including Android™ phones, iPhones®, iPads®, Blackberrys®, and PDAs.

Small system — incredible sound

Four high-performance amplifiers provide up to ten watts of total power to give your music real presence. The two 1" speakers are an ingenious combination of woofer and tweeter, delivering solid mids and clear high tones. There's even an ingenious "BassBattery." The system's lithium-ion battery, encased in rubber, doubles as a bass radiator to pump out the lows.

And Soundmatters includes a small "yoga mat" to place the foxLv2 on, to keep it from vibrating across the table when the bass kicks in. But if that's still not enough, a line-level output lets you connect the system to an external sub.

For more than music

A built-in microphone lets you carry on hands-free conversations through the foxLv2. You can even use it as an impromptu speakerphone for conference calls. And because the microphone is noise-canceling, you'll hear — and be heard — with greater clarity.

Serious sound for wired connections

There's also minijack input, so you can connect the foxLv2 to your laptop or other portable devices through their headphone jacks. Watch videos on your PC or play games with your handheld and enjoy them with bigger, better sound from the foxLV2. Included with the system is a high-performance AudioQuest Evergreen minijack-to-minijack cable. The Evergreen cable keeps signal distortion and electronic interference to a minimum — it's a difference you can hear.

Portable convenience

The foxLv2 is made for on-the-go listening. It features a removable hinged grill that swings out to serve as a stand. Its built-in rechargeable battery gives you up to 8 hours of operation, and can be charged either through its AC adapter or a USB connection to your computer or other device. And with the included international power adapters you can always keep the foxLv2 charged wherever you are.

Just slip the foxLv2 into its travel pouch, and tuck it into your pocket. Or carry it by its included lanyard. Either way, you're ready to share some great sound with your friends at a moment's notice.

Super-near-field champ

EdN from Readington, NJ on 11/1/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I didn't expect much - wanted something to listen to music on the road without headphones. My wife has a big name brand bluetooth speaker, much larger size, and it was OK sounding, although big. Liked that I could go wired since I haven't yet heard bluetooth sound that I much cared for. More than pleasantly surprised. Snap my head back sore neck surprised. I've played chamber music, Grateful Dead, electronica, bluegrass, symphonic, chant, alt rock - it all sounds good and loud enough at ultra-near-field distances (next to computer). Better than the wife's much larger unit. The only exceptions are where the music is totally dependent on bass - Bassnectar, showy symphony stuff like Mahler, drum ensemble. Not bad sounding then, just not what the recording engineers intended. The laws of physics are the laws of physics. This wrings the max out of its size and weight. If you listen to music suited to small midrange and treble speakers - chant right now sounds properly angelic. Real test was switching between high res (24/96) and lower res (iTunes 256K res) files. Figured the small size would make the difference insignificant, as with most headphones from mobile players. With the included cable connecting to an Audioquest USB DAC to a Macbook Air with JRiver for the player, higher res files, almost every case, sounded higher res and much better. Bluetooth sounds really good. Small differences (flatter) to wired. For ultra-near-field, I can't imagine better.

Pros: clear sound, accurate, small, light, easy to use, bluetooth surprisingly good

Cons: my wife now wants to replace her way larger bluetooth speaker with one of these, doesn't break the laws of physics...

For the size, it does just fine

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Works as advertised. It is what I expected, but since I have never had a small bluetooth speaker, I have nothing to compare it with. Wish that USB would do more than just charge it. Would be good to be able to use it via Bluetooth or the USB for sound and speakerphone capability. Bluetooth with my iPhone and USB with my MacBook Pro when using voice over IP.

Pros: Small, light, good sound quality

Cons: Limited bass due to size, but that is expected,

Does not live up to hype

Phronesis from Washington, D.C. on 4/21/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a good bluetooth speaker, but not as good as the reviews. It is very well built, and it comes with excellent accessories. The sound: physics is a limitation. It is very small and only has 4 watts output. At low levels it sounds outstanding. But crank it up and it distorts. Plus, it vibrates a lot when there is heavy bass. It has no auto-off feature and only connects to one device at a time. I suggest the Braven 650 or, if you don't need a speakerphone, the Braven 650. Both have better sound. Crutchfield customer service and pricing are excellent. They stand behind their products.

Pros: Small size, quality build, excellent accessories, sound clarity

Cons: Distorts at higher volumes, can only connect to one device at time. There are better small bluetooth speakers.

WOW!! This thing is a little pitbull, very impressed

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

All I have to say is "WOW"!! This super tiny BT speaker is amazing. Very glad I got it. BT works extremely well. It has sooooooo much more kick than even the Jambox and has great mids and highs as well. Table walking isnt as bad as some people mentioned. Mine only did it a few times at higher volume with bassy music. If you use the mat it comes with then it will not walk. I have already taken a few walks with it and it easily fits in my front pocket of my jeans. I do alot of business with Crutchfield due to all the smooth trouble free transactions. Im too busy to worry or deal with mistakes or problems is why I keep coming back. Crutchfield gets an A++

Pros: build quality, size, and sound....omg the sound quality...yes yes!!

Cons: none!!

Great Sound in a really neat package

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Ordering process from Crutchfield was flawless as usual. I am delighted with the sound quality and packaging. Set up bluetooth with my iPhone and iPad easily. I love jazz and can now listen to iTunes and Pandora without the need for headphones.

Pros: Great sound in a very nice package that has some weight - nothing flimsy here. Everything is straight forward -no problems

Cons: none

This will spoil you.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

If you haven't ever listened to you music played through high quality speakers or headphones, you are in for a real treat. The foxLv2 Platinum delivers the purest sound I may ever have heard. This isn't about loud. It fills a typical room with music at about two-thirds full volume and I listen to it at about one-quarter full volume most of the time. For the first 24 hours I fed it nothing but 70's fusion, a TON of Stanley Clarke, Weather Report, RTF, and David Sancious. The bass is not glass rattling but it is definitely present. I fully intend to get the foxLO subwoofer to go along with this. The tremendous richness and clarity are subtle at first, but when you hear an old favorite through the foxL using your smartphone as the source and you realize that you NEVER heard that little something you just noticed in the background. That's what this tiny speaker delivers. This is a better quality of sound then most of us are used to. Heaven help us all when Soundmatters gets around to designing headphones.

Pros: Extremely well designed and constructed. Breathtaking sound quality.

Cons: The included AudioQuest cable is not as pictured here nor on the Soundmatters website. This is not a 'con' in the sense that I got less than I expected, for all I know the cable in the package is an upgrade. It just isn't the one in the picture.

Nice Sound

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The quality of sound this puts out for its size is amazing. I wanted a portable speaker for my Ipad with no wires so it would be easy for my wife to use. Very easy to connect to Bluetooth. Great with Netflix movies, Angry Birds and Pandora.

Pros: Very good vocals.Great build quality. I am very happy with this product

Cons: I can hear a slight difference if I use the unit plugged in and with the cable, but with Bluetooth it still sounds amazing.

Great speakers !

Excellent Travel speaker

Ruth from Leesburg, VA on 12/26/2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I love this small speaker. I own the Soundmatters foxLv2 Platinum and the Bose Soundlink. I use these with my iPhone and iPad to play both music and TV Shows when I use a Slingbox. I purchased the foxLv2 first. I was immediately impressed with the size and the quality of the unit. My only disappointment was that the sound was not overly loud, even after turning up the volume on both the device and the speaker. For normal listening - home office, bedroom, hotel, etc. - the foxLv2 is fine. However, I needed a speaker which could also be loud during use of blow dryers, dog washing, & other noisy activities. So I purchased the Bose fully intending to return the foxLv2. The Bose is an entirely different experience - the sound quality is exceptional, the volume loud - and price point much higher. However, I ended up keeping the foxLv2 and loving it because of its size and portability. I'm not going to throw the heavier Bose in my suitcase when I'm going away for a weekend. But I DO happily take the foxLv2 everywhere with me. Honestly, I don't even move the Bose around my house very often. It stays put until I need the volume boost or quality that the Bose can easily deliver. But darn this little foxLv2 travels with me and moves all over the house continually. And I find myself praising it every time I use it. So, as with many things, I found there isn't one perfect solution. But if you need small size and great sound, I highly recommend the foxLv2 Platinum.

Pros: Quality, sound, size & portability, battery life, ease of use

Cons: Wish the sound level was just a little louder.

Impressive small speaker system

HarveyK from Princess Anne, MD on 10/18/2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The sound is extremely good for such a really small set of speakers. I purchased the travel box with it so that I don't worry about banging it around when I pack up the iPad and the speakers when I travel. I can listen to quality sound when working on the iPad. Though pricey, the system delivers what it promises.

Pros: Great sound, small size, easy to set up.

Cons: A bit pricey but nothing good is cheap today.

The Ultimate Portable Speaker

OscarP from Farmington, NM on 8/16/2012

This unit does everything as advertised. It works with bluetooth or wired to my: PS Vita, iPod/iTouch, and MacBook Pro. Bluetooth setup was very east and produced excellent sound. I didn't buy it from Crutchfield only because I wanted the Dual System (two of everything with a splitter for stereo effect of two units with some left/right separation) which is only offered from "Soundmatters Soma Store." I travel frequently and stream Netflix to my PS Vita or MacBook...these units are superb in conjunction with either unit.

Pros: Exceptional sound quality, extremely portable, well made, long battery life (platinum ver.), works with all my stuff!

Cons: Pricey, however the pros more than make up for it.

Great Little Speaker

Pros: Great sound, small size, well made.

Cons: None

Soundmatters foxLv2 Platinum Bluetooth

dcass from Melbourne Beach, FL on 5/7/2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Outstanding! I use it with my iPad as a mini TV and it provides auto linking as soon as it is turned on and all the volume you would ever want. It also works just great with a Logitech SqueezeBox Touch.

Pros: Plenty of volume, easy to set up and operate.

Cons: Needs a relocated pull out stand so you don't accidentally close so easily when you pick it up to move it.

Solid & Excellent Speaker

Ryan from Maryland on 5/1/2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

First I want to say I never ever ever review anything unless I feel it is worthy. Before buying this I own maybe two or three compact speakers to include the iHome - iDM12. This as well as the fore mentioned DM-12 is very easily recognized and paired. The reason for 4 stars is the price point and one grip about Bluetooth. I tried several styles of music from Mozart, The Ting Tings to Hall & Oats. I will say Hall & Oats song "Maneater" had this speaker literally bouncing and vibrating across the table. It is a solid feeling speaker and not plastic feeling at all. For those that do not know when pairing with a bluetooth device it overrides that devices internal speaker until Bluetooth is disabled manually. Unless I am missing something it would be better when the bluetooth speaker (this speaker) is turned off that it automatically turns the iPad or computer speakers back on and then off when this device is powered. One other weak area and this may be an EQ setting on the device is that heavy base like ZZ Tops "Got me Under Pressure" is slightly distorted but not a deal breaker to return this. I also bought the case for it and you may want to invest in plastic storage to keep all your power cords in one spot. Inevitably, every electronic device from this one to you cell phone to the Apple i product has different power cords and this devices has different power plugs for more versatility.

Pros: Compact, solid device, easy to use, Good customer service from Crutchfield.

Cons: Price is $50 more than it should be, a case to store cables with the device would be nice.

Power & Portability

smauigolf from Wash DC on 3/7/2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I must say that I love technology and when I came across this incredible bluetooth enabled speaker and reading all of the reviews, I had to try it. Wow! What an amazing speaker that is incredibly small - really can fit in my shirt pocket; and powerful in terms of the bass and output it provides. I was unsure about between the two models but for nearly 2x the battery life and a $30 AudioQuest Aux cable, I thought it was a no brainer for the $30 extra bucks. The longer battery life is worth it in itself. Don't get fooled in reading the specs - this Pt version gets 20hrs with an aux cable and 10hrs with bluetooth, other unit gets 6hrs max on bluetooth. If you want it to last the entire time at the beach - I think you will agree with me but just make sure it is fully charged before you go. Ok, in terms of performance, this thing rocks for its size. I have a bluetooth enabled Bxxx-soundlink to compare it to and although that device is incredible, I think the extra $100 bucks and the fact that it is very heavy and not nearly as portable, will probably have that unit staying home to keep clean. I can't believe Foxl is the size of a hotdog bun. I have played a lot of music I like and kept the equalizer the same on acoustic via iPod settings and noticed that you can still turn up the volume on the Foxl unit as well if you want more volume - NICE! They even throw in a bunch of world travel adapters but the USB cable is all you need if you have a laptop - like most of us.

Pros: Portability, Performance, Power, Bass, Long-Life Battery, Bluetooth, Extra port if you want to add a sub, Small & Lightweight, Build Quality, Simplicity of Operation

Cons: Wish this came with a standard USB micro vs mini

Product Research

Personal Audiophile Loudspeaker: The Soundmatters foxLv2 Platinum is pocket-sized, personal music system that upgrades the listening experience from your smartphone, MP3 player, laptop, mobile gaming system, or portable/micro projector. The Soundmatters foxLv2 Platinum provides clear highs and smooth bass from a compact, self-powered speaker. The foxLv2 Platinum can be connected to your compatible audio source via a stereo minijack cable or aptX Bluetooth (A2DP). The Soundmatters foxLv2 Platinum even features a built-in microphone for hands-free communication from your smartphone. The foxLv2 Platinum operates off of standard AC household current or battery power.

Digital Amplifiers: On-board amplification is supplied by four ultra high-efficiency digital amplifiers delivering a total power up to 8W @ < 0.1% THD (via AC power). The amplifiers are limited to 4W @ < 0.1% THD (via battery power).

Linear Magnetic Drive Twoofers: The Soundmatters foxLv2 Platinum employs two dual voice-coil 1" (25mm) Linear Magnetic Drive Twoofers (tweeter/woofer combination) that provide wide response with remarkable clarity. The foxLv2 Platinum is engineered around this pair of proprietary, highly sophisticated acoustic drivers, unique in their ability to reproduce both extreme high (tweeter) and low (woofer) frequencies from a single very small diameter 1" (25mm) dome speaker, dubbed the "Twoofer". The Twoofers incorporate soundmatter's Linear Magnetic Drive topology featuring field-focused, back-to-back, dual Extreme-Energy neodymium magnets and a 1-inch, dual voice coil.

BassBattery/Flatmagic: The foxLv2 Platinum pocket-sized, personal music system's dual digitally powered Twoofers are assisted in their task of reproducing low frequencies by a miniaturized version of the high mass "moving-wall" passive bass radiators found in Soundmatters' award-winning SUBstage home subwoofers. To add the additional bass driver, without compromising stringent weight and space restrictions, Soundmatters engineers developed an innovative solution, known as the "BassBattery". This patented design was created by rubber-encasing the unit's built-in high capacity, lithium-ion battery, enabling it to provide the mass for, and do double duty as, an acoustic suspension bass driver.  Moving the battery from the inside of the speaker to become part of a "moving-wall" radiator, frees up critical internal airspace to drive the bass.

"Skintight" DomeForward Enclosure: The Soundmatters foxLv2 Platinum incorporates high-tech glass-filled composite walls to form a "skintight" ultra-rigid totally sealed acoustic enclosure (often confused with metal, but much lighter for portability). Unlike other manufactures that mount their acoustic drivers in manner that actually obstructs the sound, especially if the listener is off-axis from the front of the speaker; the foxLv2 Platinum Twoofer speakers, are mounted "dome forward" from the enclosure, protected by a grille designed to maximize acoustic transparency.  Another reason why unlike typical small speakers, the foxLv2 Platinum sounds open and airy, almost regardless of its location.

aptX Bluetooth Technology: The Soundmatters foxLv2 Platinum pocket-sized, personal music system offers Bluetooth music and hands-free capabilities. The Soundmatters foxLv2 Platinum employs aptX Bluetooth technology for CD-like wireless audio streaming (when steaming from an aptX equipped Bluetooth device). The foxLv2 Platinum automatically connects to your Bluetooth enabled device for instant wireless streaming from your smartphone or music player. Bluetooth wireless technology offers a 25-30' range.

  • Music Streaming (A2DP): The Soundmatters foxLv2 Platinum features Bluetooth wireless A2DP stereo technology for audio streaming from your Bluetooth enabled smartphone, music player, or laptop. The Soundmatters foxLv2 Platinum employs aptX Bluetooth technology for CD-like wireless audio streaming (when steaming from an aptX equipped Bluetooth device). The foxLv2 Platinumconnects automatically and is optimized for maximum audio fidelity, including low distortion and minimal noise. This unit does not offer Bluetooth AVRCP (remote control).
  • Hands-Free Communication (HFP): The foxLv2 Platinum features Bluetooth HFP wireless hands-free communication and provides a built-in "business-quality" microphone for speakerphone/conferencing calling. The built-in noise and echo canceling microphone circuitry, coupled with the Twoofers remarkable voice clarity, make the foxLv2 Platinum a superb choice for hands-free and conference call applications. When a call comes in while listening to music streamed via Bluetooth, the foxLv2 Platinum automatically switches so you'll hear and be able to speak to the caller. When the call is finished, your music returns. With a quick press of the unit's front Bluetooth button, you can even remotely reject, answer, or terminate a call.

Note: Not all Bluetooth enabled devices will be compatible, due to the differences in Bluetooth technology.

Apple Device Compatible: The foxLv2 Platinum is compatible with the iPad (1/2), iPhone (3G/3GS/4/4S), and iPod touch (2nd gen/3rd gen/4th gen) via Bluetooth and 3.5mm auxiliary connection.

Auxiliary Input: The Soundmatters foxLv2 Platinum is fitted with a 3.5mm stereo audio input for a hardwired connection of your smartphone, MP3 player, or laptop.

Note: An AudioQuest Evergreen audio cable is included for the highest resolution critical listening.

Subwoofer Output: The foxLv2 Platinum features a 3.5mm stereo audio output to connect a powered subwoofer for extra bass.

Fold-Out Stand: The foxLv2 Platinum pocket-sized, personal music system's protective grille doubles as a foldout speaker stand.

Anti-Slip Acoustic Mat: The Soundmatters foxLv2 Platinum includes a anti-slip, acoustic mat to help deaden any unwanted resonance.

Power Requirements: The Soundmatters foxLv2 Platinum pocket-sized, personal music system can be powered from using the included external AC power supply or the unit's integrated Lithium-ion battery.

  • AC Power: The foxLv2 Platinum operates off of standard household current using the supplied AC power supply. The unit's output wattage doubles when powered via AC (up to 8W) vs. battery (up to 4W). A universal power travel adapter kit is included with 4 types of AC power adapter plugs (for US/Japan, Europe/China, UK/HK, and Australia)
  • Battery Power: The foxLv2 Platinum also features an integrated rechargeable Lithium-ion battery that can last up to 8 hours on a full-charge, depending upon volume levels. The integrated Lithium-ion battery can be recharged via the included AC power supply or via USB, using the included USB charging cable.

Optional Carrying Case: The Soundmatters UK PRO TT10 travel case (602UKPRO10, sold separately) is designed specifically for the Soundmatters foxLv2 Platinum portable powered speaker. The travel case has just enough room to accommodate the Soundmatters foxLv2 Platinum portable powered speaker, its AC adapter (disassembled), and audio cable.
