If you live and die with your favorite sports teams, then the SIRIUS Sportster tuner is for you. It's a full-function plug-and-play SIRIUS Satellite Radio tuner that's easily transported, so you can set up shop with SIRIUS in your home, car, or at the tailgate party. It delivers all of SIRIUS's programming, and offers a host of enhanced features that keep you in close touch with all of your favorite teams.

SIRIUS broadcasts every NFL game, and the Sportster's Game Alert lets you know when your favorite NFL team is about to take the field. You can even choose whether you want to listen to the home field or away team announcers. The Game Zone feature lets you scroll through all the league scores while you listen to the game. Factor in the extensive sports coverage on ESPNRadio, and you're set.

Driving to the game? One Touch Jump takes you straight to the latest traffic and weather reports for 20 major metropolitan areas (sorry, Green Bay). A built-in alarm clock helps you make it to the game on time. And, oh yeah, don't forget the 65 commercial-free channels of the best music programming you've ever heard.

This package includes the car kit you'll need to play the tuner over your vehicle's in-dash stereo. The kit features a docking station, a DC power (cigarette lighter) adapter, and a roof-mount antenna. The tuner mounts firmly in the docking station, where power and signal connections are made; the docking station's base is designed to mount securely to your dash (adhesive mount and mounting hardware included). The antenna attaches to your vehicle's roof with a magnetic base. The compact Sportster tuner features a built-in FM transmitter so you can broadcast straight to your vehicle's FM radio — no wired connection needed. A small remote control is included, so your passengers can switch channels while you drive.

If you'd like to be able to transfer the Sportster between your car and your home stereos (and only pay one subscription), you can also get the home kit, which includes a SIRIUS home antenna, docking station, and power supply. And so you can take the Sportster with you just about everywhere you go, a portable boombox is also available. A subscription to SIRIUS is also required.

Great for traveling!!

Chris from Waterloo, IA on 8/31/2005

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this radio several months ago because I travel on Sundays sometimes and didn't want to miss my Viking games like last year. Plus I was getting tired of finding radio stations for music or talk radio to occupy my time on the road.<BR><BR>I bought the unit when the home kit was offered for free with purchase. I even bought the portable boombox for it. Setting up the subscription was a breeze online and I bought the lifetime sub.<BR><BR>This radio is awsome in the car, home, beach or by the pool. My wife loved it when we went on a road trip to the southwest. The radio worked flawlessly and had so much variety to listen too.<BR><BR>Now my wife wants one in her car when she travels.<BR><BR>

I love it!

Brandi from Clemmons, NC on 7/27/2005

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

My husband bought the Sportster for me on my birthday because of Hair Nation and the NFL channel. I was tired of not being able to hear much of my hair bands and missing nfl games if I had to leave the house on Sunday. I bought it when there was a special.. buy the receiver and home/car kit and get the other kit free. The car kit was easy to install as was the home kit, but I can't get a good reception at home. Looks like I need to buy an outdoor antenna. I'm not complaining though because it's worth it to me. I love my Sirius and don't know how I got along without it! I can't stand being in a car with regular radio. I want to get my husband Sirius for his birthday. The only complaint I have is that the "sticky" would not hold. I had to screw the holder in my dash. I'm hoping to get the boombox soon so I can take it with me wherever I go! I highly recommend Sirius in general and the Sportster is great!

Not a great radio.

Brendan from Downers Grove on 6/7/2005

Audiovox has improved its radios and is still impoving them, which is a problem. I went though two antennas before they admitted to me there was a design flaw. Other companys models are smaller and better designed, I threw my audiovox away (less then a year old) after my third time dealing with customer service. Bought a Delphi ... much smaller and better designed ... better reception too.

Sirius Satellite Radio and the Sportster make a great combination.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The installation is very simple, and just about anyone can do it. The hardest part is getting the radio and mounting kit out of the very secure plastic packaging.<BR><BR>When setting it up just make sure you choose a FM frequency where there is no other station broadcasting on or nearby. I also have the home docking station directly connected to my home theater system. Whether using it directly connected or the FM transmitter, it sounds great.<BR><BR>In addition, I found an added bonus. With the FM transmitter on using the home docking station, I can receive Sirius on other radios in the house. I just tune to the frequency I have set the Sportster at and get music anywhere, even outside around the house with the walkman. This works well for those that may have an existing stereo, and no available audio inputs. Its important to note that they do not sell the unit as such. How well this will work will be determined on what your home is constructed of, and the distances between you and the Sportster.<BR><BR>Now for those of you like me that have been with Sirius since the beginning, you may want to take a look at this. It's small and compact, and all in one unit. Not like the original 2 & 3 piece units. It gets no warmer than a VCR, unlike other brands and many old units. Less heat allows the electronics to work better and last longer. And it is fast! If you have an old unit, you will know what I mean. The Sportster changes the station is almost immediately. My old unit, 5-10 seconds to change a station, 20-30 seconds for station information.<BR><BR>After 3 weeks of use I found the Sportster to be a high quality system. I am very pleased with Sportster and Sirius!

#1 satellite receiver

Brian from McChord AFB, WA on 5/1/2005

What can I say, this thing is awesome. Came with the car kit, got the home kit free from Crutchfield, bought the boom box, 100% satisfied with all. Read some reviews about folks complaining about FM transmitter, there crazy. FM transmitter works unbelievably well. I have the receiver on top of my TV in the family room, I can get crystal clear reception from a 2nd tuner located 25 ft away outside in my shed and can even pick it up in my car at the bottom of the driveway. As for sound quality and selection of channels, again awesome. Have recommended this system to all my friends. <BR><BR>As for Crutchfields service you guys rock. Thanks

I was so sick of conventional radio. I bought this unit with the $30 rebate, read the fine print though, in order to cash in on the rebate you MUST sign up for a 1-year contract. Still, I think I got a great deal and even got the home kit Free! It is simple to install (after you decided where you want to put it) and easy to use. Have fun!

Early Sportsters

PCitizen from Hampton, VA on 3/12/2005

This receiver is extremely easy to set up and use. Installation, if you can call it that, was a breeze. A call to Sirius and less than one minute later the receiver was enabled an operational. Setting the receivers FM Modulator frequency was a easy to do; however, there was substantial static and noise on every available frequency. I soon discovered that the FM out connector could not seat completely. I had to trim some plastic off the plug to get it to work correctly. Once done audio was perfect. I immediately fell in love with Sirius and the Sportster. I soon found myself impatient when riding in friends cars and listening to standard radio - all those commericials. Sirius is well worth the green.<BR><BR>About three months into my Sirius experience the receiver started having "Antenna Not Detected" errors. The problem was sporadic and not repeatable. It had a mind of its own. I searched the web and discovered a myriad of possible culprits to include antenna problems and suspected software deficiencies in the receiver. Ultimately the receiver was replaced and soon enabled. I immediately saw that the software had been updated. The receivers interface is very similar but its functions are smoother in appearance and operation. So far the new radio has been working perfectly. I suspect that the early run of the Sportster model may have had a software issue that we will never really now about for sure. The new one is showing no signs of problems... yet. Oh year, one last thing. The FM Out cable was updated too. didn't have to trim the plastic on the new one. it was made to fit correctly. I am extremely satisfied with my Sirius receiver and experiences.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased the Sportster about a week ago and couldn't be happier. I bought both car and home docks, and use both. I thought installation was a snap, and had both docks connected and running in under an hour, including running antenna wire. I initailly thought the FM modulator tuning was going to sound cheesy, but it sounds great on both my Kenwood head unit and Yamaha home theater tuner. I drive both night and day, and the auto dimmer function on the large display works flawlessly. <BR><BR>Serious programming is great! Anyone can find what they like here, especially if you're like me and go from Classic Country to 70's to Hard Rock to Talk programming.<BR><BR>Even though it appears very sturdy, I only wish it came with a soft carrying case, as I'm woried about dropping it going from car to home. Love the unit!

Super choice for a radio!

Robert from Yorktown, VA on 3/4/2005

I've had this for receiver for three months and really like it - it's also my second Sirius (the other is permanently installed in a car). Sound quality is very good, it's very easy to operate, the home team sports feature is very nice (this is a great radio for NFL fans). I use it at home and in the car. In the car I use the FM modulator and that is a weakness - not in the Sportster but that if you drive any distance over 50 miles in populated areas, you'll probably find a strong FM station coming up on the same setting as the radio modulator (this will happen for any satellite radio using a built in modulator). It makes the Sportster sound crackly and weak. You can either accept tuning the modulator frequency every so often or connect it to an auxiliary input on the car radio - which is what I'm doing this weekend. Crutchfield has a FM modulator you could put inline with the antenna - a friend used that and it solved the problem too. At home, I have periods of signal dropout. This appears to be related to antenna placement and doesn't occur in the car. To get a better view of the sky, I'm getting the 50' extension and moving the antenna up on or just under the top of the roof. At home, I have no problem with FM overlap and listen to the Sportster on a small combination MP3 player/radio anywhere around or near the house.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased the Terk XM set up to go with my alpine head unit. Sound quality was somewhat poor and on top of that, XM took away their all-metal channel - XMLM. I spoke with Crutchfield customer support, they said send it back if I did not like it, so I did. I still wanted Sat radio, but my alpine head unit was only XM compatible. I found an AI-net adaptor for my head unit to allow it to take in a line level audio source on Crutchfields site. I was excited now...I ordered the SIRIUS Sportster, hooked it up, and WOW...Sirius has a much better broadcast quality. Sirius broadcast at 128 kbps and when I questioned XM, they said it is proprietary information. My guess is 96 kbps by the sound of it. I love the Sportster, great user functions, output level control to match with the rest of your system, great display, overall...JUST FREAKIN GREAT...oh yea, they have 3 great Hard Rock/Metal stations!!!!!!!!! I would recommend this system or any SIRIUS system to anybody who wants quality sound.

Receiver Features

SIRIUS Satellite Radio: SIRIUS Satellite Radio features more than 120 streams of original programming beamed coast-to-coast, including 65 streams of commercial-free, digital-quality music, and news, talk, sports, entertainment, and children's programming.

Note: Satellite radio service is available only within the continental United States. Service is not available in Alaska and Hawaii.

Display: The SP-R1 tuner has a large backlit LCD screen. You can choose between two ways to present the artist and song title information on the LCD screen. The Default screen displays the artist and song title on separate lines. Pressing the Display button will increase the character size to its maximum, put artist and song title information on the same line, and continuously scroll them across the screen. The stream name, number, category, preset band/number, and time of day are always displayed.

Display Adjustments: You can manually adjust the display's contrast and dimming controls for best viewing. The Auto Dimmer option allows the unit to use ambient light to automatically sense and determine the proper display intensity for the current lighting conditions. The backlight color for the display and buttons is switchable between amber and green.

Category Tuning: The Category buttons allow you to cycle through the available genres of programming: Pop, Rock, Country, Hip-Hop, R&B/Urban, Dance/Electronic, Jazz/Standards, Classical, Latin/World, News, Sports and Entertainment. Once the category has been selected, you can choose the streams from that category using the rotary knob.

Preset Tuning: The tuner allows you to store 30 presets in 3 separate banks (A, B, and C). Preset streams can be tuned directly by selecting a preset band and pressing the preset number on the numeric keypad (unit or remote). You can also activate the preset tune mode in which the rotary knob scrolls through only the preset streams.

Jump: The Jump key is programmed to access a specific stream, regardless of which preset bank is currently selected. The default setting is the traffic stream (adjustable for your area).

Direct Tuning: Using the direct and numeric buttons on the supplied remote, you can directly access SIRIUS streams by their 3-digit stream numbers.

Skip/Add: You can select seldom-tuned streams to be "skipped", if desired. This prevents the stream from being accessed during any of the tuning modes (except direct tuning). A skipped stream can be re-added using the same menu.

Stream Lock: You can lock a stream, making it only available by direct tuning. When a locked stream is tuned directly, you will need to enter a 4-digit code before the stream can be heard.

Song Alert: This feature allows you to capture and store the program data information (artist and song title). You can store program data information for up to 20 songs. The tuner will monitor the current incoming SIRIUS signals and alert you if any match the program data information stored in memory.

Antenna Aiming: You can check the strength of the SIRIUS satellite signal being received. When locating the antenna in your home, you should place the antenna in a spot that illuminates the maximum number of bars on the meter.

Audio Output Level: You can adjust the level of the audio output to match the other sources in your audio system. You can choose from 10 output levels.

FM Transmitter: The built-in modulator has 100 frequency options. This feature allows you transmit SIRIUS radio programming to your vehicle's FM tuner, so you don't have to make any connections between the SIRIUS receiver and the radio.

Game Alert: When your favorite NFL team is playing on a different stream, Game Alert will notify you.

Time-Based Functions: The tuner has a built-in clock with the time data provided by the SIRIUS stream. The clock options can be set for 12-hour or 24-hour operation, time zone, and observance of Daylight Saving Time. Once the clock data is set, you can activate the following functions:

  • Alarm Clock: The built-in alarm clock can be set to turn on the unit at a specific time.
  • Program Alert: The Program Alert function allows you to program the unit to turn on and switch to a selected stream at a specific time.
  • Auto Shutdown: The unit can be set to automatically turn off after a one-hour period without any user intervention, after 59 minutes of inactivity, a beep-tone sounds and a display prompt appears on the screen allowing you the option of canceling auto shutdown.
  • Sleep Mode: The receiver can be set to turn off after a selected period of time, 15, 30, 45, or 60 minutes.

Factory Default: To revert back to all the original receiver settings at once, activate the factory default screen.

Remote Control: In addition to offering all the controls on the receiver's front panel, the remote adds direct tuning, audio mute, and volume control. Dimensions: Length=4.145", Width=1.624", Height=0.678".

Car Kit Features

Overview: The SP-C1 car kit includes everything you need to install the SIRIUS Sportster tuner into your vehicle. The kit contains the docking cradle, mounting bracket, DC power supply (cigarette lighter), roof-mount antenna, and mounting hardware. The SIRIUS tuner mounts firmly in the cradle, where antenna, power and signal connections are made. The cradle's base is designed to mount securely to your dash, console, or other flat surface (the surface doesn't need to be horizontal).

Antenna: The low-profile SIRIUS antenna has a powerful magnetic base that allows you to mount the antenna on the roof or trunk lid of your vehicle. The antenna needs to be positioned in such a way that it will be free of mechanical and line-of-sight obstructions. The antenna' s dimensions are: W=2.031", H=0.726", D=2.652" (9.1285" including "tail"), Cable Length=20.5'.

Note: The attached micro cable has a single SMB connector, which plugs into the cradle.

Cradle: The SP-R1 tuner slides into the docking cradle and is locked into place. The cradle can be bolted to the mounting base on the bottom or the back. On the back of the cradle are inputs for the antenna and DC power supply, plus a line output (minijack) and an FM transmission antenna output (sub-minijack).

Mounting Base: Using the supplied base with attached adhesive pad, the cradle can be mounted to any flat surface in your vehicle. The base has three adjustment points which enables swiveling the tuner for optimum viewing. Depending on adjustment, the base will add various amounts to the dimensions. The minimum is 2.45" added to the depth. The base can also be mounted using the included 1/2 inch screws instead of the adhesive pad.

Optional Pro-Fit Brackets: The SP-C1 car kit can be used with many of the Pro-Fit Vehicle-Specific Mounts (VSMs) to provide a custom mount for your vehicle. Please check the Crutchfield Vehicle Selector for compatibility with your vehicle.
