Our take on the Kenwood DDX719

Large and in charge
Do you want to upgrade that bland radio in your car's dash? You'll be hard pressed to find a better way than installing Kenwood's DDX719 DVD receiver. It features a stunning 6.95 touchscreen that'll make everyone take notice of your ride.

Large and in charge
Do you want to upgrade that bland radio in your car's dash? You'll be hard pressed to find a better way than installing Kenwood's DDX719 DVD receiver. It features a stunning 6.95 touchscreen that'll make everyone take notice of your ride.

But beauty isn't skin deep in this case. The DDX719 will enrich your in-car audio/video experience with a variety of tools: easy-to-use iPod® controls, access to music and video apps through your iPhone®, and Bluetooth® hands-free calling and audio streaming. And you can use that big touchscreen to change sources, choose music, select DVD menu items, or adjust EQ settings with just a few quick touches of your fingertip. For a final touch, you can even set this Kenwood's control buttons to match the color of your vehicle's dash illumination.

Kenwood DDX719

Enjoy apps
Plug your iPhone into the DDX719's USB input, and you can control Pandora® Internet radio, with easy access to your stations, "thumbs-up" and "thumbs-down" ratings, and other major functions. You can watch Netflix content on the built-in screen whenever you're parked, or send video to a screen in the back so your passengers can watch while you drive. And you can download Garmin's "Streetpilot" app for iPhone, then use the receiver's screen for navigation.

Play your other media
You'll also have control over the music and video content on your iPod from the touchscreen, so finding the tune you want to hear is a snap. And of course the DDX719 plays CDs and DVDs, along with recordable discs loaded with MP3, WMA, and AAC files. You can enjoy other A/V sources by plugging them into the A/V input. The DDX719 also works with the SiriusXM tuner (not included) to bring you the wide variety of music, sports, and entertainment offered by satellite radio.

The Bluetooth advantage
The DDX719's built-in Bluetooth lets you keep your hands on the wheel you receive a call. Your phonebook transfers easily to the receiver, so it's easy to make outgoing calls — you can even use voice dialing with compatible phones. And this Kenwood will play the music you've stored on your phone wirelessly through the Bluetooth A2DP profile.

Want to keep your car's steering wheel audio controls?
In most vehicles, you can use an adapter to connect your vehicle's steering wheel controls to this Kenwood stereo. Connect a few wires, then program the adapter for your particular car and this Kenwood, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls.

Note: Bluetooth compatibility of this device may vary, depending on your phone and service provider.

Note: If you're going to use your iPod with this receiver, be sure to check Details for specific iPod model compatibility with this receiver or its optional iPod adapter.

    Great for iphone 4/4S users

Claudio from Fairfax VA on 2/10/2013

To be fair, this unit came out well before the iphone 5 and so the fact that it's not completely compatible with iOS6 is not necessarily Kenwoods fault. I do have a 30 pin to lightning adapter and while that cable won't transmit video, I still get audio. Maps will still voice over GPS directions which is good. I think this is a great unit for iphone 4/4S users. I found that it was less buggy than Pioneer software, it just worked. The buttons are small but I think that's a good thing. Doesn't look as cheesy as most head units. I also like that you can customize the color of the buttons. The large screen and matte finish of the face is what most attracted me to it, it almost looks OEM in my car as it blends in perfectly with the materials of my dash. The glossy finish of other head units just looked terrible and stuck out. I hope more head units follow this model, in the future...

Pros: Matte finish. Blends in with the materials of most dashboards much better than shiny units. Works well with iphone 4/4S

Cons: I've seen higher resolution screens but this one is still a nice screen.

    Wouldn't buy this model again

rjh.3280 from Central Michigan on 12/8/2012

I bought this unit when I had an iPhone 4s and everything worked well except for the bluetooth call quality. I saw that the firmware could be upgraded so I purchased the HU thinking that I can upgrade the firmware after I upgraded to an iPhone 5. There was no such luck, after contacting Kenwood, I was told that they are not going to make a new lightning adapter nor will they update the firmware to help with the bluetooth functionality. My biggest gripe now is the call quality via bluetooth, everybody that I have called from my vehicle cannot understand what I am saying.

    Pros: bright crisp screen

Cons: No support for IOS 6, extremely poor phone call quality.

Can be buggy when connecting the Garmin GPS app..... had many issues... Now that I have an Iphone 5 there is no way to get the garmin app to work, no converter cable.. I didn't think this one trough very well!

    Pros: Nice sound

Cons: Connectivity bites....... Buggy when connected to the Garmin app.

    Great Unit

    J. Boz from Trumbull, CT on 11/9/2012

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Very good unit. Pandora and Garmin Navigation work perfect although I preferred the Tom Tom Navigation for the IPhone. Garmin is the only compatible Nav when using the additional iPhone cable. You must download Garmin which is $49.99 and then pay for an additional feature to allow it to sync with your unit which is also $49.99 for a total of $100.00.

Pros: Ease of use. Cost is very reasonable. Works very well with iPhone

Cons: None that I found yet :)

    Having Issues

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I love this product when it is working. It has all of the features I wanted (satellite, hands-free, ipod). However, it locks up on me constantly, usually after I receive a phone call via the hands free. Once this happens I can't change any channels. I can only correct the problem by either resetting the radio (whereby I have to re-program all of the pre-sets and phone settings) or by turning the car off (not an option when driving on the highway). If I didn't have this problem, I would give this radio 5 stars.

Pros: Fits perfectly in my dash, screen size & picture, features

Cons: locks/freezes up (usually after hands free use).

    Really nice unit

Jonccs from Littleton, Colorado on 10/7/2012

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The straight on this unit is you won't be disappointed. I suggest having it installed so you can enjoy it that much faster without all the stress. I left my OEM speakers in my Ford F150 and added a Sound Ordinance sub that sounds really good for my needs. I also added the Sirius receiver and had to purchase a plan from them for about $12.00 per month so consider that little extra cost. I was going to go for the GPS Nav unit but found that the new OS 6 on the IPhone or IPad more than I would ever need not to get lost so I saved myself $500.00. You will need that for installation and extras.

Pros: Great sound and ease of use. With a little help from my 24 year old daughter I never even opened the manual. Love this Kenwood! It blows my really nice sounding OEM away!

Cons: The 7 inch screen is great during the day but I can't seem to figure out how to adjust brightness in the evening. It has an automatic setting but it is still hard to drive at night. Guess I will have to open the manual and see if that is possible.

    Packed With Features

    plumber802 from Swanton,Vermont on 9/30/2012

I gave this head unit 5 stars across the board because I love it so much.I did LOTS of research before deciding in this HU.The runner-up was a similar Alpine unit but the Kenwood won out because it just had so much more to offer.I'm not going to go into a detailed review feature by feature since I just don't consider myself that articulate.I did the install myself into a 2008 Silverado 2500 with factory Bose sound.I did initially call Crutchfield customer service to confirm the adapters I would need so as to avoid any surprises. If you have a late model Chevy pickup with Bose and XM you WILL need the GMOS-100 adapter. This adapter takes care of everything you need to make the Kenwood interface with all controls. The GMOS-100 is definitely a little pricey but mostly "plug-n-play" with the factory amp and so forth. It comes with many harnesses to cover most vehicles.Instructions were just OK.I did hit a snag where it was unclear whether to use the RCA jacks or splice the speakers wires, a simple call to Crustcfield CS quickly got me back on track.Use the RCA jacks if you have BOSE. Also, you will need to make room for the head unit and accompanying wires and interface box by cutting out a section of plastic within the dash.I did this with a Dremel.Once installed and powered up the DDX-719 just IMPRESSES.The grafics are great and the controls are intuitive.PLEASE NOTE: you will need a separate cable in order to take full advantage of your iPhone. With Motion X gps app no nav needed.:)

Pros: 6.95" screen.IPhone integration allows you to use MotionX GPS.Great sound.Great value for the money.Kenwood quality.

Cons: Iphone interface cable required for some apps.Controls on the front of the unit are a little small. No remote.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a great unit. I haven't had any problems with it whatsoever. Using the kit that came with my order from Crutchfield, it installed quickly. This unit has plenty of settings for audio to get the sound just right. Also, ground the ebrake wire and video works fine. I think the menus are pretty easy to understand.

Pros: Works great. Does as advertised

Cons: It would be nice if it had different skins or have a much more customizable look to it.

    coopebh from Kansas on 7/12/2012

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

DDX-719 seems priced about $100 too high as compared to other DVD players on the market. The sound quality is good as well as the cool factor (big screen). We struggled with the installation but made a call to Crutchfield and got it cleared up. The most confusing installation segment is connecting the wiring harness to the e-brake...that took as long as installing the whole unit.

Pros: Interface with phone works well. DVD player quality good. Big screen!

Cons: Big screen but little buttons and a confusing menu that will take months to master.

Terrific unit, great features, nice price

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I've had the DDX719 for little over a month now and love it! The features work as expected and advertised. It is a great match for my iPhone and the two together make me happier with each. I was a little reluctant to start pulling bits and pieces of my '06 Altima out of the dash (I don't work on my car all that much) - but the directions were good and with a few questions answered by Crutchfield support, I had the head unit, steering wheel adapter and the Bose system adapter installed and sounding great. There were a few gotchas for me - mostly because I didn't know much about the settings. The default is for Bluetooth Audio to play only through the front 2 speakers (this can be changed in the Bluetooth settings). For the steering wheel adapter to work, there is an enable remote setting that must be set to on (I thought that was for an IR remote). What a terrific piece of work. I waited about a year before making this purchase and thought I would need to spend 1K or more to get the features that I wanted. I might upgrade to the Garmin app at some point - but for now there are other GPS apps that display fine on the screen (in app mode). That works fine for me. I couldn't be happier with my first Kenwood purchase, first DIY install and my first Crutchfield purchase - all three turned out great.

Pros: Lots of usable features Terrific Sound Quality Great iPhone integration

Cons: Menus have so many options that some can be difficult to fine.

Better than i thought awesome features

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Put this in a 2008 Honda Accord (the dash kit looks great, better than factory). Huge improvement over factory even before I installed the JL Amp and Sub. Complete system JL V2 300/4 Pushing 4 Polk 6 inch, Alpine 500 watt mono pushing a JL 10w3. 4 volt pre amp out makes a big difference on sound quality. this is one of the main reasons I chose Kenwood over the Pioneer. Also the video parking brake sensor is a better design than the Pioneer

Pros: Solid build, Easy to see screen in bright light, one button screen black out for night driving, 4 Volt pre amp out, easy to navigate display, Pandora App and IPod app control is simple to use, Netflix streams over display, very customizable sound controls

Cons: If you plan on using the Garmin Street pilot app there is a $49 add on you have to buy from Garmin in iTunes making the total cost for adding phone based GPS $99 (ouch), I have seen units with better screen resolution but they cost much more. Should have come with the remote and iPod cable

    DDX 719, Honda Fit

Bob W from MO on 4/28/2012

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Excellent head unit. Installed in a Honda Fit. All wiring etc went as predicted, no issues. Sound quality and ability to control same is excellent. All functionality works well, except the video feeds from iPhone. (this isn't a big deal for me, but it would be nice) While the DVD video is fine, I still have not been able to get Netflix or YouTube to display. Crutchfield help couldn't figure it out. Have not called Kenwood yet.

Pros: Easy controls. Sound quality great. Nice a ppearance. Switches seamlessly between hands free phone, Pandora, iPod.

Cons: Video for iPhone . Screen a little weak in direct sunlight, and the Fit has a huge windshield........, but OK.

The head unit fit great in my dodge challenger and it has so many ways to arrange the prefect sound you want. its easy to control and the back up camera works great. I would suggest that if you get this head unit that you might want to change out your factory speakers for the best quality. Great headunit and i suggest you buy. Great price as well

Cons: wish it had HD radio

    Exactly what I needed

    Buffalo from Arkansas on 4/22/2012

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I failed on my first purchase of a double din system that I wanted to use with my iPhone. Got on a chat with the folks here at Crutchfield and explained that my largest and most important need is handsfree bluetooth. We established Kenwood as the brand and then started looking at other factors for my decision. 90% of the time in my truck, I am streaming from iPod and talking on the phone. This does that perfectly. When i want other functions like using the GPS off my phone thru this system, it does that very well too. I am very pleased (after being hugely disappointed by Pioneer by the way)

Pros: Outstanding Hands Free Calling - most people on other end of phone will not know you are using a car system All other functions work too

Cons: A little costly for my needs, but I suppose if you really want to watch videos and such, this would be a reasonable price.

    The DDX719 is a winner

Jim from Temecula, Ca. on 4/6/2012

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I love this head unit. In the last year I have been through about 4 or 5 different radios and wound up sending them all back. This one is is a keeper. I exchanged a DDX319 for this one because I didn't like the front panel connection for the iPhone/iPod (cable continuously got in the way of the gear shift). The features are exactly the same as the 319 but it adds Bluetooth, a larger 6.95" screen (same resolution) and a motorized front panel. The only thing I didn't take into account was that you need to have access to the rear USB if you want to update the firmware. No big deal for me but something to keep in mind during your install. Screen resolution is 800x480 also known as WVGA and it looks great (way better than Pioneer's 480x240 for the same size screen). This is pretty much the highest resolution for the latest aftermarket touchscreen radios out there. It looks beautiful, but don't expect apple retina display resolution because they just don't make those kinds of LCD panel for radios (even navigation radios). If you want a retina display in your dash you'll have to pay $2000 or more for a custom install plus you still have buy the iPad. If you buy this radio you will love it!

Pros: Awesome sound. Display is great (not totally washed out in sunlight). An amazing amount of customizable options. No front panel connections to get in the way. Intuitive menu (didn't even crack the manual open).

Cons: The rear AV input for the iPhone/iPod connection (6") should be as long as the rear USB cable (36") so both can be routed together. For my installation, radio will have to be removed every time I upgrade the firmware, but I can live with that.

    Excellent Head Unit

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Excellent product. Very easy to install and setup. Great Sound. Had a DDX419, but traded up for the iPod connections, which are on the back of the unit instead of the front. Sometimes I get a "iPod disconnected" error, but I simply unplug and then replug it and the HU sees it. It will auto record 30 mins of any station that you are listening to on Sirius/XM. Highly recommend this unit, you won't be disappointed.

Pros: Great sound, ease of installation. iPod connections are on back of unit.

Cons: USB cord and plug are not the same length.

    Solid Choice

.. from Grand Rapids, MI on 3/18/2012

I ordered this unit a few days ago and installed it today. This receiver is solid all the way around, good build and sound quality, and a more classy understated front face vs. the much harder to see glass screens. I installed the Axxess steering wheel controls as well as the iPhone audio/video cable to I could connect/charge my phone and use it with Pandora and also display my nav iPhone app on the screen.

Pros: 1. Great Sound 2. Simple installation 3. Good bluetooth for both phone and calls...I would highly recommend getting the cable too though if you want to use this head unit with apps. 4. Understated design and matt screen for easier daytime viewing. 5. Solid build quality. 6. Packaged well with good instructions. 7. Worked perfectly with Crutchfield harness.

Cons: 1. The screen resolution could be better. When Apple can cram 1000+ pixels per axis, head units remain way behind and this one is no different. 2. GUI could be a bit nicer, seems like Panasonic has a better GIU and better resolution, I just wish they didn't use glass.

The screen has a resolution of 800 (H) x 480 (V) x RGB with 1,152,000 total pixels. This unit has touchscreen controls with interactive video graphics, making menu navigation easy. The monitor electronically slides down for loading or ejecting a disc.

Angle Adjustment: The bottom of the touchscreeen monitor can be tilted upward at six different positions to provide the best visibility in your vehicle.

Custom Background Images: You can download a still image for use as the unit's background from a connected USB thumbdrive.

Multi-Language Display: For your convenience, this unit is equipped with a multiple language display. You can select the language which is best suited to your first language - English, French, Spanish, German, Italian, Dutch, Russian, Portuguese, Chinese (simplified/traditional), Thai, Turkish, Arabic, Persian, Hebrew, or Greece.

Dimmer: The dimmer function will dim this unit's display and button illumination automatically when the vehicle light switch is turned On when you connect orange/white Illumination wire of this player's harness. You can also manually dim the unit's display and button illumination.

Security Indicator: The Security Indicator feature helps to protect the Kenwood DDX719 against theft. Turning this function "On" allows the security indicator light (red) on the front-panel of the head unit to flash when your vehicle's ignition is off.

2-DIN Chassis: The DDX719 has a 2-DIN chassis (also known as Double DIN or size DD), and will fit in many vehicles with a large dash opening. The unit can be ISO-mounted using factory brackets, or Euro-mounted using the supplied mounting sleeve.

Note: As always, please consult Crutchfield's Outfit My Car to verify fit with your vehicle.

    Built-in Bluetooth

You can adjust the level of the microphone without affecting the other sources. The external microphone features an attached 12' cable terminated by a right-angle 3.5mm connector which plugs into the mic input on the rear-panel of the head unit. The microphone offers an integrated mounting bracket which can be clipped to your vehicle's sun-visor or taped to your dash. The external microphone measures 0.525" (diameter) x 1.485" (depth).

Note: This unit does not offer an integrated front-panel microphone.

iPod/iPhone Connectivity: The Kenwood DDX719 supports audio/video playback from select Apple iPods and iPhones.

    • Audio/Video Playback: The Kenwood DDX719's rear-panel USB (type-A) port and rear-panel 3.5mm A/V AUX input allow you to connect your Apple iPod/iPhone using the KCA-iP202 iPod cable (113KCIP202, sold separately). The unit's USB port handles the control, metadata display, and charging of your iPod/iPhone. You can navigate through your music and video files using the head unit's touchscreen controls and view song and movie info on its display, while your iPod/iPhone charges. The 3.5mm AV input handles audio and video transfer from your iPod/iPhone to the Kenwood DDX719. By using the Auxiliary input, the music travels to the receiver as an analog signal, so you can even play the Digital-Rights-Protected files you've stored on your iPod/iPhone. The unit's rear-panel AV input must be set to "iPod" in order to playback audio/video from your connected iPod/iPhone. Video can only be displayed while the vehicle is in park.
    • Audio Only Playback: If you only want to playback audio from your iPod or iPhone, you can simply connect it to the DDX719's USB port using either the USB/iPod dock cable that came with your iPod/iPhone or Kenwood's iPod Direct Connect Cable (113KCIP102, sold separately). This 1-wire USB connection bypasses the iPod/iPhone's DAC and sound quality is maximized through the head unit's 24-bit D/A converter, allowing for a Signal-to-Noise ratio up to 99dB. The unit's rear-panel AV input must be set to "AV-IN2" in order to use the 1-wire USB connection. You will not be able to play Digital-Rights-Protected files.

Note: If you have an iPod nano (7th gen), iPod touch (5th gen), or iPhone 5; use the Lighting-to-USB cable that came with your Apple device to connect to the head unit. These Apple devices only support audio playback (no video output).

The head unit also supports Repeat (track) & Random (album) playback functions of your connected iPod/iPhone.
    • iPod/App Control Mode: The iPod/App control mode allows you to control stored audio/video content from your connected iPod/iPhone's clickwheel or touchscreen. This is very useful for the person riding in your passenger seat. The iPod/App mode also lets you listen to your favorite music apps, such as iHeartRadio, SiriusXM,, Rhapsody, & Slacker streamed to your iPhone (iOS 3.0+) through the Kenwood head unit and your vehicle's speakers. You can even watch video on the Kenwood DVD receiver's touchscreen from streaming movie apps, such as Netflix & YouTube, downloaded on your iPhone 4/4S (iOS 4.0+), via the Kenwood KCA-iP202 iPod cable (sold separately). The App Mode's video functions can only be accessed when the vehicle is in park and the hand-brake is fully engaged. Not all apps will be compatible with App Mode and App Mode will provide only limited (basic), if any, control over the app. Available controls may include - Play/Pause & Skip Previous/Next.

Note: Access to your iPhone's downloaded applications will depend on the availability of a cellular and/or WiFi network for purposes of allowing your iPhone to connect to the Internet.

iPod/iPhone Display: The Kenwood DDX719 will display your iPod/iPhone's music file information when you are controlling your iPod or iPhone from the Kenwood multimedia head unit. The head unit will display Track number, Elapsed playing time, Artist name, Song title, and Album label. The unit will also display Album Art. If you choose to operate your connected iPod/iPhone in iPod/App Control Mode, the DDX719 will not display your iPod/iPhone's music information (the head unit will instead display 'iPhone App and iPod Control Mode + Parking Off').

iPod Charging: The head unit's USB connection provides 1A of current to power and charge your connected iPod/iPhone when your vehicle's ignition switch is set to the 'ACC' or 'On' position. This unit does not charge the iPad. If your iPod/iPhone has no initial battery charge, then the unit will not recognize it.

Pandora App: Pandora is the leading Internet Radio music service in the United States, giving people music they love anytime, anywhere, through personalized radio stations. The free Pandora app lets you play music from the Pandora music service through the Kenwood DDX719 using your connected Apple iPhone, via the Kenwood KCA-iP202 iPod cable (sold separately), or the USB/Dock cable supplied with your iPhone. To access Pandora you must have an Apple iPhone (iOS 3.0 or later) with the latest version of the Pandora application from Apple's iTunes App Store. Your iPhone will need an active Data Plan account with connection to the Internet via 3G, EDGE, or WiFi. You will also need a Pandora music service account. The DDX719 will provide control over the Pandora music service & display Artist, Album, & Song information (including Album Art).

    • Station List: You can select Pandora stations from your Station List by date or alphabetically (A-Z).
    • QuickMix: QuickMix allows you to listen to songs played on one or more Pandora stations in your Station List randomly. You will need to edit your QuickMix station selections on the iPhone before connection.
    • Skip Songs: You can skip song tracks within a station. You cannot skip back to a previous song. Pandora limits the number of skips allowed.
    • Thumbs Up/Down: You can give songs a thumbs up or thumbs down to help Pandora personalize stations to suit your preferences.
    • Bookmarking: The song or artist currently being played can be bookmarked & stored in your Pandora account.

Note: Access to the Pandora service will depend on the availability of a cellular and/or WiFi network for purposes of allowing your iPhone to connect to the Internet. Pandora is not supported in Canada & only available in the United States.

Garmin App: In addition, with the Kenwood KCA-iP202 iPod cable (sold separately) you can view navigation maps and get audible/visual directions on the Kenwood DVD receiver's touchscreen, from the Garmin StreetPilot Onboard USA app ($49.99), when downloaded onto your connected iPhone 4/4S (iOS 4.0+). The Garmin StreetPilot Onboard USA app contains NAVTEQ map data for the United States (lower 49 states); with over a million POIs, turn-by turn directions, lane assist with junction view, traffic updates, and speed limit alerts. And because the map data is downloaded onto your iPhone and does not live on the network, wireless coverage is not required to navigate. Once you have selected your destination on your connected iPhone, your map route will be visible on the DDX719's touchscreen (even with parking brake disengaged) and turn-by-turn directions can be heard through your car stereo speakers. You will continue to use your iPhone's touchscreen to control the Garmin StreetPilot USA app. The screen of your iPhone and the screen of the Kenwood DDX719 will not be identical.

The video from this connection can be set to display when switched to this input, or display the rear view camera video automatically when the vehicle is shifted into Reverse gear. The purple/white wire (in 22-pin harness) must be connected to the vehicle's reverse lamp circuit for automatic video switching. Automatic video switching takes approximately 1.5 seconds. You can manually set the touchscreen to display both the navigation map and back-up camera at the same time, when backing up. Audio from your music source will continue playing, while the back-up camera is displayed.

    Remote Control

Optional Remote Control: The optional Kenwood KNA-RCDV331 IR wireless remote control (113RCDV331, sold separately) unit is designed to operate this Kenwood multimedia head unit. The wireless remote controller operates off of two supplied "AAA" batteries. The remote operates off of IR transmission so the KNA-RCDV331 must be pointed at the front-panel of your compatible Kenwood head unit within direct line of sight.

Steering Wheel Remote Compatibility: The head unit features an OEM steering wheel remote control input wire (blue/yellow) within the included wiring harness that lets you keep your vehicle's factory radio steering wheel remote controls when used with an optional steering wheel audio control adapter (sold separately). Please consult Crutchfield's Outfit My Car to see if your vehicle is compatible.
