Kenwood Excelon DDX9902S
2013 Toyota Tacoma
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)
Easy to install and customize the settings. Sounds great. The only thing is that it takes a good while to turn on
When we heard that Kenwood added Apple CarPlay™ and Android Auto™ to the Excelon DDX9902S DVD receiver, we knew this would be a winning combination. You can integrate apps from an iPhone® and an Android™ directly to the handy 7" touchscreen display for total media control. Kenwood combined this functionality with the wireless convenience of Bluetooth® with aptX for high-quality music streaming and hands-free calling.
You can choose from a wide variety of sources, such as HD Radio™, SiriusXM, Pandora®, iHeartRadio®, DVDs, CDs, and music from a USB drive or a portable audio player. Extensive sound-shaping tools let you refine your sound.
Here are some of the interactive features this Kenwood offers with your Apple® or Android™ phone.
The convenience of Bluetooth for hands-free calling and audio streaming can't be overstated. When a call comes in, you'll answer with one tap of your finger, and you can stream music without the hassle of plugging your phone into the receiver. Kenwood ups the game by supporting aptX high-quality audio streaming from equipped devices, so you can enjoy streaming audio quality that'll satisfy your sonic demands.
The DDX9902S features a built-in HD Radio tuner which allows you to hear improved fidelity and reception from participating AM/FM stations all over. And if you want to listen to stations that won't fade away on the longest trips, this Kenwood also features a connection for an optional satellite radio tuner, so you can enjoy SiriusXM's extensive programming with your subscription. You can even stream your favorite Pandora® and iHeartRadio® stations from your phone.
And when you're not in the mood for radio, you can use the rear auxiliary input to plug in a portable audio player, or plug a thumb drive full of music into the rear USB port — it'll even play FLAC files. If you still have some DVDs and CDs hiding in the console or glove box, you can even slip them in.
A wealth of color choices and customizable menu on the big 7" screen let you tailor the look of the Kenwood to match your vehicle. This receiver plays video content in bright, clear detail when you're parked. When you're on the road, you can entertain your passengers by sending a movie from the receiver to a rear-seat screen. And of course you can plug in a rear-view camera to play it safe in crowded parking lots.
The powerful built-in amplifier sends a crisp, clear signal to your speakers, while the 7-band equalizer boasts Kenwood's Drive EQ feature — when the radio is playing at lower volumes, it boosts frequencies in the music that are often masked by road noise. The built-in DSP (digital sound processing) with digital time alignment lets you zero in on your perfect sound, and the three sets of 5-volt preamp outputs deliver an ultra-clean signal for adding additional amps for even more power.
In most cars, you'll need an adapter to retain those controls with this car stereo. Connect a few wires, then program the adapter for your particular car and radio, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls. You'll see the adapters that work with your vehicle when you add this receiver to your cart.
Bluetooth note: Use of this receiver's Bluetooth features will depend upon your phone's Bluetooth capabilities. Learn more in our articles about Bluetooth profiles and streaming music using Bluetooth with aptX.
Picture is great. The sound is great. I love the car play feature. Easy to navigate through and use. I would recommend to others for sure.

Average Customer Review(s):
Easy to install and customize the settings. Sounds great. The only thing is that it takes a good while to turn on
I bought this unit for my kids car and they love it. They use the Android Auto feature and back up camera features mostly. The only thing I don't like is that the Android Auto only works through USB. The kids don't mind so it doesn't matter. But this will be a deterant for the replacement head unit in my truck.
Pros: easy to use and install. versatile
Cons: Have to use USB for Android Auto. USB charging is low current forcing the choice to charge off a car charger instead of using A. Auto when phone battery is low.
Stereo is great, sound is a lot better than stock. I purchased this stereo to upgrade my single din stereo to a double din with touch features and hands free calling. The mic can be heard by others really well, and the response for calling is always instant. One of the big reasons I went with this Kenwood was for its compatibility with the Maestro RR unit, and I love the features it presents. Overall a great purchase for my Jeep.
Pros: Touchscreen, Maestro RR compatible
Cons: Lots of cords/wiring when used with Maestro RR
The head unit seems to work fine, but there was no mounting hardware in the box. I ended up having to make a trip to the hardware store to buy M5 screws and then cut them down to be short enough to use. Not a huge issue, but to the price, you would think the screws would be in the box as advertised. The stereo has good sound and there are plenty of options to allow you customize the sound field and display to fit your preferences.
Picture is great. The sound is great. I love the car play feature. Easy to navigate through and use. I would recommend to others for sure.
Pros: Car play works great. The sound is great. The equalizer helps to adjust the sound like I want it. The controls and touch screen are easy to use.
Cons: When plugged in to car play my phone calls will not go to handsfree. Probably my problem on my phone settings.
Great head unit. Sound is much better than factory. Plenty of inputs, easy to use. Carplay is fun, and not having to go through the process of connecting a passenger's phone to bluetooth so they can play music is a godsend. It looks sharp, and has nice big "buttons" so operation while driving is a breeze. This was a great purchase for my vehicle.
Love the many features. My wife can safely back my truck up. Sound is fantastic and very responsive.
Was easy to install and technical support was very helpful.
Pros: Was easy to install and technical support was very helpful.
Cons: 1 wire was colored different than the harness other than that was great.
Really pleased with the look and function of this unit. Sounds great, all features work as expected.
KENWOOD WARRANTY SUCKS!!! make you pay to sent to warrenty service. I bought this unit because of car play witch would work. Im seriously thinking of putting the stock unit back in. Disappointed in Cruthfield that they would sell products from manufactures that don't stand behind their products better. should be no stars.
Pros: looks nice
Cons: everything else
Great product for a great price.
Pros: Apple Play
Only getting one star because the deck was DOA on me. Can't really comment any further other than Crutchfield took care of me and allowed to upgrade to the Kenwood DDX9703s.
I couldn't be happier!! Sound is awesome and I LOVE IT!! No problems here. Bought refurbished with latest update already done. Customer service at Crutchfield if stellar. Thanks for a great product at an unbelievable price!
Pros: Great technology at unbelievable price!!!
Cons: Too difficult to change the splash screen. Tiny problem but worth mentioning
Great product and even better customer support from Crutchfield. I was in desperate need of a new radio in my 2005 GMC Sierra and this refurbished Kenwood was a great deal for the price. I have always been a Kenwood fan and this unit did not disappoint. The features that sold me were the Apple CarPlay and XM ready. There are a lot of ways to set this radio up so know what you want to do before you buy. For CarPlay all you need is the standard USB to Lightning cable. HDMI doesn't do a lot for you, at least not for what I needed. XM set up was easy, bought the new XM radio and used the existing XM antenna in my truck. The adapter kit recommended worked great and maintained all of the functionality in my truck. The unit sounds great, especially on HD Radio and when playing Pandora or music from my phone. The included microphone makes using Bluetooth for calls sound great! Highly recommend!
Pros: CarPlay, sound, price
Cons: None so far
The first unit I received did not get past the initial screen. So in most cases I would blast the product and the company who sold it to me. Well, I was not wrong to buy this head unit from Crutchfield. Even though the unit was not functional, the Crutchfield service and support was really impressive! I communicated my issue and received a replacement unit in 3 days! I value very much that type of service because it takes away the fear of buying refurbish equipment from them (I wouldn't take that risk with anyone else). So I'm a happy camper. I'm sure (I hope) that Crutchfield requires from Kenwood that all refurbs units coming back into the market have been tested to at least complete the power up cycle. Getting a defective product will happen from time to time and it's inconvenient but what the vendor does about it to me speaks volumes about their commitment to the the consumer. So yes, I would definitely recommend Crutchfield!
Pros: Great Value and Support
Cons: Had to go through the hassle of returning the original defective product.
Perfect fit and really stands out.
It's a beautiful system. Who live without
It worked great while it lasted and a refurbished unit was a great price for all the features. Then the touch screen started to go out on me and I was unable to change the radio station. So while it lasted it was great
Great value. A lot of features for a good price. If it accepts updates to the Android Auto and/or Apple CarPlay app, it'll have great longevity as well. Sounds just fine to me. I'm not an audiophile, but I like my music to sound good and this works fine. Some other reviewers mention troubles. I bought a refurbished unit and the first thing I learned was to reset the unit by pressing the red triangle button on the front of the unit. That solved a lot of inconsistent behavior. I like Android Auto, but my phone (LG G3) does not connect Bluetooth only and needs to be wired. Installed myself plus steering wheel controls, a new rear camera, and an audio interrupt for my ham radio. All works fine. There are so many sources and features that it's a bit overwhelming at first. Takes some getting used to.
Pros: Lots of features and inputs. Sound is good. Screen is bright and clear. Android Auto and Apple CarPlay "future proofs" the unit to some degree.
Cons: HDMI connection is deep and cramped. The cable I had was too large and would not fit. No front connections. The screen quality is good, but has a matte screen that washes out in sunlight.
Wow! This thing is a mess. When it worked, it was actually really nice and I enjoyed it. However, I have owned it for less than 60 days, and for the most part, I have had nothing but trouble. The blue tooth is not good. It would connect at times, and at other times it wouldn't. When you got it to connect, it sometimes wouldn't play sound even though you can control you phone from the unit. I could see my calls happening, but I got no sound from the car (most of the time.... actually rarely ever). The phones we used with this were a Galaxy Note 5 and LG G5. The unit would freeze and become unresponsive until my truck was shut off and turned back on. My selections would sometimes take up to 40 seconds to register. Anyway, this is garbage. Luckily for me, Crutchfield's customer service is awesome and I'm swapping this out with a Pioneer. I have had such a horrible time with this that I may never buy another Kenwood product again.
Pros: Looks cool
Cons: -Sloppy Interface -Dated graphics -Blue tooth that doesn't work all the time -Bad software -Nearly everything functional on the unit
Unit has many great features. It takes some play with to get every thing set-up. MUST read all instructions to get everything working correctly. I had already replace factory speaker, sound quality good.
Cons: Almost does to much. A little hard to get set up, but the more you use it the easier it gets.
Overall I would say that I am very satisfied with the quality of the Kenwood Excelon ddx9902s. I can tell a significant improvement to the quality of my sound system. I have played many DVDs with no trouble. I installed this unit myself. From a scale of 1-10, 10 being difficult and 1 being easy, I would give this install a 5. I do not install these professionally but I have installed around 8-10 Single DIN receivers throughout my lifetime. Considering all the cabling I needed to integrate to my truck and my steering wheel controls, the install should be possible for anyone with 3-4 hours to spare. After the installation I decided to add a backup camera. The camera integrated perfectly and turns on every time I put my truck in reverse. Very happy.
Pros: Moderately Easy to Install, Great DVD Picture, Greatly Improved Sound Quality
Cons: Not an Install for Beginners
Loaded with lots of cool features. Sound was terrible. Sound wasn't near as good as my Pioneer. Crutchfield said it had dual zone capability but in fact it does not. All the features were cool and worked well. I was very disappointed with the fact there was no dual zone and lack of sound performance. I had it in for three days before I took it out and sent it back. Old head unit sounded better. I will replace it with the Pioneer AVH-4100NEX.
Pros: Reasonable price for what you get. Lots of cool features. Nice user interface.
Cons: Lack of power, sound quality was lacking.
If I could give this negative stars, I would. First off, sound quality. I took out my factory head unit and replaced it with this. The factory unit actually sounded better than this thing. Next, integration. It fights with Uconnect for control over your phone. It's nearly impossible to determine which "side" has control over your phone. Last, Android auto. What a joke. After cycling the phone and head unit a dozen or so time, it Might work. Once it's on, it works fine. But, who has time to sit in the car and reboot the head unit a dozen times in hopes that maybe this is the magic time it takes? Once you get to where you're going, now you're afraid to turn the car off because you will have to go through that frustration cycle all over again to get it to work. Overall, this thing isn't even good as a boat anchor. I called both Crutchfield and Kenwood technical support. Kenwood actually told me to call Android since they didn't actually make the Android Auto part. I'm sending this back immediately.
Pros: Might be a good target to sight in a scope at 100 yards
Cons: Everything related to Android Auto and Kenwood's technical "support"

The LCD touchscreen has a resolution of 800 (H) x 480 (V) x RGB with 1,152,000 total pixels. This unit has touchscreen controls with easy-to-identify icons, making menu navigation easy. The monitor electronically slides down for loading or ejecting a disc. The bottom of the touchscreen monitor can be tilted upward at six different positions to provide the best visibility in your vehicle (you can save any one of these positions to the head unit's memory).
Note: To prevent the display of video while the vehicle is in motion, the light green wire (attached to rear chassis) must be connected to the vehicle's parking brake detection circuit. You cannot view video unless your vehicle's parking brake is engaged. If you attempt to view video without the parking brake engaged, the unit's LCD touchscreen will simply display a blue screen and "Parking Off". While your vehicle is in motion (parking brake off), you can still view all of the head unit's menu screens/settings, source information, metadata, and album artwork; as well as Apps Mode, CarPlay, and Android Auto.
Front-Panel Controls w/ Variable Color Illumination: In addition to the touchscreen controls, the unit includes frequently used buttons along the bottom edge of the screen. You can adjust the head unit's button illumination, as well as display background color from the following preset colors - Blue, Purple, Sky Blue, Aqua, Yellow, Green, Amber, Red, Pink, White or Scan (Scans through all preset colors). I'm not sure where the cd/ dvd can go in yet but it was advertised to have it. has all the great features blu tooth, hdmi connection, sound quality. especially for a factory refurbish the price was great. I have yet to install but I'm sure it will be simple enough and a great improvement from the factory unit. this receiver also have bells and whistles for down the road eg. ports for a back up camera, software updates, android compatible, even steering wheel volume control.
