Voice commands

Kenwood's understandably proud of their advanced voice command feature. It lets you control a variety of receiver functions just by speaking, so you can keep your eyes on the road. You can get directions, find a song on your iPod, switch sources, or dial a phone number, all without taking your hands off the wheel. An included external microphone ensures your commands are heard loud and clear.

Play your media, plus PANDORA® Internet radio

PANDORA control

With your iPhone, an optional cable and the PANDORA® app, you can access your favorite PANDORA® stations from the face of the receiver, whenever you're in range of your network. All the goodies you're used to seeing on PANDORA®, like album art, and track info will be right on the screen. And "thumbs-up" and "thumbs-down" ratings are just a touch away.

The USB input, SD card slot, and two audio/video inputs give you the connections you need to add other audio sources, game consoles, or digital media. For the back-seat passengers, an audio/video output will send movies and other content to your rear video screens. Dual-zone controls let you listen to music up front, while a movie's playing in the rear.

Bluetooth for convenience and safety

Parrot, a leader in Bluetooth technology, has teamed up with Kenwood to bring you hands-free calling in the DNX9980HD. When a call comes in to your compatible phone, your music mutes and caller ID info shows up on the screen. With a tap of your finger or a couple of words, you'll hear your caller over your vehicle's speakers. You'll talk through the included visor-mount microphone, as you keep your attention on your driving. And as an added bonus, you can stream music from any compatible Bluetooth device.

HD Radio™ for superior sound and more

HD Radio stations offer superior sound quality on their AM/FM broadcasts and additional programming on secondary channels. The DNX9980HD's built-in HD Radio tuner lets you access that improved sound and extra programming, as well as tag tunes for future purchase at the iTunes® store.

Outstanding sound quality

This receiver will send crisp, clear audio to your speakers — you can use the 13-band EQ and an extensive selection of digital signal processing tools to tweak the sound for your vehicle. If you're building a complete mobile surround sound theater, the DNX9980 also includes 5.1-channel decoding and a full set of 5.1 preamp outputs, a feature you'll rarely find on other DVD receivers.

Want to keep your car's steering wheel audio controls?
In most vehicles, you can use an adapter to connect your vehicle's steering wheel controls to this Kenwood stereo. Connect a few wires, then program the adapter for your particular car and the Kenwood, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls.

Note: Bluetooth compatibility of this device may vary, depending on your phone and service provider.

Note: If you're going to use your iPod with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for specific iPod model compatibility with this receiver or its optional iPod adapter.

Too Slow for a High End Product

Dark Knight from Sacramento, Ca on 10/20/2012

A big Kenwood fan and have installed a HU in each car I have ever owned as well as recommended to my friends, however, this latest version (latest for me) is a BIG disappointment. The UI is very poorly designed and operation is not consistent in many of the screens. For having soo much UI space, better organization of buttons and operations should have been considered. The UI designers could have done a better job maintaining a touch friendly operational UI. The biggest issue is the speed of navigation. As an example select NEXT while listening to the iPod and it takes 3 to 4 seconds before it will move to the next track. Selecting options is about 1 to 2 seconds. Far too slow. If the price point were a bit lower, it may be a 2 to 3 star device. Definitely not the Kenwood I have been used to.

Pros: Nice Screen Size, Nice Sound Features, Good Navigation Reception, Multiple USB connection options. Navigation plays through user definable speakers (front, one speaker, or all speakers) Fast re-route in navigation when needed. Push to Talk function works well.

Cons: Slow, Slow, Slow. UI is far too slow. Busy UI. Navigation of UI is not consistent in look and feel through screens. Slow, Slow, Slow. Unable to Pandora with Android phone. Garmin map display is poor, the traffic display and UI look very dated. Use my Android Navigation app instead. Device does not recognize center speaker in 2012 Camaro SS. I would gladly give up some of the unneeded graphics and animation for more speed. Being purely touch screen, the speed is unacceptable.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Lots of function's. Lots of delay switching functions. Good fitment in my 2005 Silverado. Blue tooth has lot's of feedback on phone. I am on the fence with this one I like the brand and all the function's it has just not impressed. Needs more display option's.

Pros: Great Navi. great sound and tuning option's. All the out and in's you would ever need.

Cons: Slow computing and touch buttons on the head unit not very good the (below screen)

    A+ all the way

I've had the DNX9980HD in my GMC 3500 Denali for about a month now and am thoroughly impressed with it. Hooked up with a GMOS-100, everything integrated perfectly (On Star, Steering Wheel Controls, Factory Sirius/XM, etc.). The unit is almost overwhelming at first when trying to properly operate all the features, but with a little use and time, it becomes natural. I would highly recommend downloading the full 105 page manual from Kenwood rather than trying to go by the small manual that comes in the box. There's also a Navigation manual you can download as well that will help you operate the Garmin. Those who complain about the brightness and other issues just need to read the manual and find out how to correct the issues. To adjust the brightness of the GPS screen, touch the TEL button for 1 second or more and you can adjust the brightness, color, black level, contrast, etc. Also, you can set the screen on Nav-Sync and the background will go to black at night. I'm still learning the proper voice commands for hands free operation, but so far, it works good most of the time. After having a DNX 5120 in my prior truck that was stolen, I purchased this unit based on my good experiences with Kenwood/Garmin.

Pros: Pandora, iPod capabilities, Garmin GPS, awesome sounding HD Radio and Sirius over my Bose sound system.

Cons: As mentioned by others, the unit can be a little slow at times, but not to the point of annoyance to me.

Not all good, not all bad

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I give this unit 3 out of 5 stars. I expected more for the price of this unit. Especially on the navigation side being Garmin and all (biggest reason why I stayed with kenwood). Yet, it seems the navigation is a stripped down garmin application. It doesn't give you standard Garmin routing options of fastest route, shortest route, etc. In navi mode, the screen at night is way to bright. In my Dodge blinds you unless zoomed way out to have it be useless. It is tolerable if viewing say the Iphone or sat radio screens. Map detail..while it looks great with a TOPO look when zoomed doesn't show you the cites while actively navigating. You have to touch the screen as if you are browsing the map to see the cities. My DNX8120 shows the cities while actively navigating and doesn't blind me. I called and emailed kenwood tech support, but they say that neither the screen brightness nor the display of cities I have described is an issue. Finally, why can't I buy life time map updates? Seems like every GARMIN stand alone nav product you can.

Pros: I was impressed with the screen resolution. Having the option to push a button while navigating and say "find nearest truck stop" is oh so nice when on the interstate. I got that to work about 60% of the time (that is recognize what I was telling it to do via voice command). Streaming audio from Iphone via bluetooth sound quality is 100% better than my DNX8120 unit in another car. Hard for me to tell the difference in sound quality when listening via blue tooth vs hardwire.

Cons: Slow to load album artwork from Ipod/Ipohne and thus very slow to skip tracks. Garmin navigation functionality is poor. You get more navigation options in a $300 portable unit than on this one. Navigation screen blinds you at night when out in the country and not zoomed way out to make looking at the map useless. Poor map details in that cities aren't displayed when actively navigating a route, unlike my DNX8120.

    Not worth the price

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

was disappointed in the 9980 considering it was their flagship product. I had a 7120 in 2007 F150 and the unit worked so much better and the ipod operated faster than it did with the click wheel, not so with 9980. clock display is so small it's not even readable while driving. GUI is confusing and hard to operate. Instructions basically give you wiring diagrams and little else. I installed this unit in my 2011 fusion with sync and the sony sound system, half of the sync no longer worked and I could not get the steering wheel controls to work at all. I ended up pulling the entire setup out and sending it back to crutchfield. I am on the waiting list for the new 9990 unit and the new ADS idatalink maestro sync interface in hopes that it will work better than the 9980/PAC-FRD 1 and PAC SWI-JACK combo I had. If the new setup doesn't work like it should then the whole setup is going back again and will be the last time I buy anything kenwood, and I've been a loyal kenwood customer for 30 years.

    Pros: Looks nice

Cons: Way over priced considering a 5 year old lower model kenwood (7120) worked better and faster. And the 7120 was only 800 when I bought it.

    Deal Breakers

DougM from Northeren Illinois on 2/3/2012

Very poor for, as they call it, a flagship product. You can not use this device at night unless you enjoy having a spotlight in your face. Fully dimmed, it lights up the entire inside of vehicle. Crutchfield helped as far as they could (happy with Crutchfield), Kenwood denied problem until photos sent, then changed their response to nobody else has complained. Suggest potential buyers, and Kenwood, read forum posts, anywhere, that indicate quite the opposite. Kenwood also markets lifetime traffic with this unit to sell it but does not reveal that you will have pop up ads on your screen if you turn it on. I would not buy again or recommend to a friend.

Pros: Garmin Navigation Great Sound Voice recognition works well

Cons: 1. Display will not dim sufficiently to allow safe use at night. 2. Pop up Ads on screen if traffic is turned on unless you purchase a different traffic subscription 3. Very slow to respond to user input. Screens take multiple seconds to change. 4. Does not want to stay connected to OBDII ECO module.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Excellent product! Takes awhile to figure out all of the options and how to operate it---I would recommend a video lesson taking a new owner through all operating options.

Pros: Easy to install---with so many connections, it takes time and patience--but can we done with good instructions provided and Crutchfield Tech Support

Cons: Unit doesn't come with a good operating manual from Kenwood.

Huge Difference returned DNX7180 for the DNX9980

Tommy from The Dalles, Oregon on 1/24/2012

I don't even know where to begin. I owned the DNX7180 for about 2 months. It was "ok" for my first Navigation receiver. Slow but ok. I ultimately returned the 7180 since the ecoroute hd cable did not work with it( I wanted ecoroute gauges and diagnostics). Then I got the DNX9980HD, OMG amazing speed difference, so many more options. I can actually navigate the ipod. Sounds better, navigates(meaning in between sources) better, simply put the 9980 is in another bracket all together. I am so happy I got this receiver.

Pros: Everything compared to the DNX7180. Just installed it this morning. Played around for about 30 minutes. We are having a snow storm in my area so I gave up and went inside.

Cons: None yet, I haven't played with it long enough. I'm sure there will be a few things that are not perfect. The 2012 models are supposed to be android friendly and faster.

    Excellent Unit

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I recommend this HU The Pandora integration is excellent. You could use your smartphone Pandora application with your 3G/4G data plan and the Kenwood Pandora Interface as an alternative to Satellite Radio

Pros: - Pandora integration , Garmin GPS , Bluetooth , transmit music thru a Bluetooth connection , Voice Command

Cons: Boot up process could be improved , Map refresh - sometimes the road colors are black and after a minute the color came back , GPS alert voice - could be improved , Ipod/Iphone Interface Connection from Digital (Ipod/IPhone) output to Analog Signal (Kenwood Unit) input

Kenwood Should be purchased from Specialist

mattm from columbus, In on 11/2/2011

I say this because I have read all the negative reviews. If this unit were purchased from an specialist, they could update all the operation software to make the unit faster and in general better. This would take care of all the listed problems

I Own a previous version about 6 years old, so i decide to buy this new model for my second car, no impress on anything, to slow to change from one device to another, now have adds on the navigation screen, traffic sucks, I'm, driving every day on the same route and always is traffic ahead, Never traffic, bluetooth have some echo, the steering wheel control work ok for the volume, but the change to the next song buttons is always on and confuse the computer screen on my car. But is always something good, better graphics more functions like pandora, (but can be better), the split screen on navigation is great, the change colors on buttons match perfect on my 06 jetta

    Awesome at a Price

Bob W from Melbourne Florida on 9/12/2011

Incredible Unit. I installed it in My Winnebago Minnie E-450 Chassis. Had to use a Rasp on the dash but It was not that hard to fit. The GPS Antenna wire was to short and had to extend it with some Coaxial wire I had . They Don't offer a longer wire or extension. But it works and sounds very well. The GPS can lag but most of the time functions better than a Garmin Stand alone I have. I didnt like that I cant install custom POI's without doing it by hand. But the Bluetooth works as advertised and and phone calls are no problem. Sirius works well and was priceless when traveling. Eco system is excellent for tracking Fuel cost and use. It also makes you drive smarter . All in all very worth the price. Just wish I could list the State and National Parks

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a review from an airline pilot. The graphics are good but the unit is too slow with a lot of lag. Garmin should not have allowed Kenwood to use their navigation software because, in my opinion, this unit is under powered and not designed to accept intricate data that can be used easily.

Willy from Modesto CA on 8/24/2011

WOW!! What an amazing sound quality. It is a bit confusing at first but the quality is amazing. I removed an Eclipse AVN 5500 and replaced it with this deck and it is the difference between night and day. This is the best sounding deck out there.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

this is the worst kenwood radio i've ever bought. to start kenwood placed ads on the nav screen. the radio freezes up so get use to resetting it. the nav will turn off when it wants. there are 2 usb plugins, and only the second one can be used to play videos from the ipod but you have to have a flashdrive plugged in to the first one for it recognize the ipod. just the other day the radio deauthorized my ipod, so for what ever reason i cant listen to my ipod anymore. oh yea dont bother trying to play videos from the iphone on it. this is the 5th kenwood i've owned and after this waste of money it's my last. it worked good for the first couple months and now it makes a great paper weight.

    Novice Install

David S from OBX, NC on 7/26/2011

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

A true novice regarding the installation of high end car audio equipment, I just successfully completed the install of the Kenwood 9980HD in my 2010 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited. This installation included the PAC-Audio wiring harness, Sirius radio adapter, and EcoRouteHD module. With the material provided by Crutchfield, I found the install process to be relatively flawless. I now have a new head unit which I am confident is secure, fully functional, and "rattle free". I had never pulled a head unit, spliced so many wires, or pulled so many interior panels. I'm still amazed every time I start the Jeep and that Kenwood boots up. The 9980HD is every thing I expected and more. Many thanks to Crutchfield, my advisor Taylor, and entire tech staff.

Pros: 4V pre-outs, multiple A/V inputs, multiple Ipod inputs, blutooth built-in, pandora control built-in, dual camera support, 13-band graphic eq, tons of audio options, great customization features, Garmin GPS is wonderful, touch screen is responsive and high-quality. Cons: User interface is painfully slow (3-4 seconds to change tracks on the ipod). It also takes forever to change screens. I'm not sure what Kenwood was thinking because it's almost unuseable with an Ipod. Thank god for playlists. No keypad for searching through music. You can choose a starting letter (a,b,c) but you can't type in multiple letters (i.e. "lady" for lady gaga) which makes finding individual songs a bit tedious as you have to scroll through all the songs that start with the letter "L" for example. It's been a bit finicky with my backup camera. Usually the video shows, but sometimes it doesn't. Also, the unit flashes the backup camera when shifting from drive to park which causes a 3-4 second blank screen (previous models would not go blank when shifting through the gears from drive to park). Overall I'd buy it again because of the features / price / and Garmin Nav, but the Pioneer is SOOOO much faster with regards to Ipod integration and just overall user interface. I really hope Kenwood does something to address Ipod compatability because it is a HUGE step backwards from my DNX7100.

    The DNX-9980HD isn't cheap, but it's wonderful!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I've had this unit installed for a month now in my 2010 F-150. The day after getting it in, the family and I embarked on a 3000 mile road trip. The Garmin navigation works flawlessly and I love the graphical pic of complex intersections - with notification of the best lane to be in. The traffic info is terrific and automatically routed us around some nasty backups (although the advertising when you're stopped is a nuisance). iPod/iPhone control/charging is great, Pandora control works just fine, playing video by DVD or through the iPhone is a snap... I could go on - there was no shortage of entertainment on the trip. Installation is straight forward - and I bought the PAC units to maintain the Ford Sync functions, and the steering wheel controls. There's plenty of room under the head unit for the additional harnessing and PAC unit(s). If I had to do it over again... I definitely would. As a final comment, this unit was a replacement/upgrade for a Kenwood DNX-9960 that I'd bought from Crutchfield a few months before. That unit had more than it's share of problems. After doing everything I/they could to fix it - Crutchfield got this 9980HD to me when I needed it. Crutchfield support is awesome - I wouldn't buy anywhere else!

Bose from Coral Springs FL on 5/7/2011

I was looking at this unit for a while and said what the heck i will get one so i looked around for a better price and found it, I took out my KVT-819DVD and put it in, work's as advertised, but i would not pay full price for it because my 819 blows it away, but i still am happy with it once i got it tuned. it was easy to install but like everything you have to have a good (GROUND) so you don't get any noise and the EQ is you know a EQ, the bluetooth and nav, are great ipod & thumb Drive work good and the back up camera is cool, i want one for the front so i don't have to keep driving around in reverse. So i guess you can say i like it, but i wound not pay full price for it so look around and match your component's and you will be Happy with your DNX-9980HD.

    Great Unit

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this a replacement for my factory stereo in my Saturn Vue. I also purchased a backup cam for it. Bluetooth, Navigation work as advertised. The backup is a great addition. I wish I didn't need a separate adapter to get Pandora to work with the unit. I had to plug in my iPhone cable through the USB and then use an aux cord to get the sound. It should all just work through the standard iPhone cable (they do have a special adapter that you can buy that does the splitting to the aux in for you so you only have to plug one cord into the phone). One other thing is that it is kinda bright at night. There are settings you can get to to change the brightness but it would be nice if it dimmed a little automatically at night. Definitely recommend this system.

Everything was great till i turned unit on in my Avalanche . On both the speaker outs and the pre outs thru a JL Audio 900HD amp , there was this horrible noise coming either from th processor or the GPS. It was there even if Truck engine was off. I know I have a perfectly clean system because both the pioneer dex-99prs stage4 and and the AVH-P4200 DVD are crystal clear. Will probably stick with the AVH-P4200 DVD and get rid of the stage 4 also. You would think Kenwood would notice this. I returned two units. Definately not worth it till they fix the noise !!!!!!!!

    Great System

MarkK from Belmont, Ca on 4/10/2011

replace a Pioneer 920BT with this unit and haven't looked back. GPS is flawless and picks up location quickly. Bluetooth functions great and sounds clear. HD radio is awesome compared to standard. Video and iPod controls work great. I know it's pricier but worth the cost.

Twin iPod/iPhone Control: The Kenwood Excelon DNX9980HD has the unique ability to control an iPod/iPhone from its main USB (type-A)port & AV-3 input for audio/video playback, and a 2nd iPod/iPhone device for audio only playback from its secondary USB (type-A) port.

    • Audio/Video Playback: The Kenwood Excelon DNX9980HD's rear-panel USB (iPod-1) port and rear-panel AV-3 input allow you to connect your Apple iPod/iPhone using the Kenwood KCA-iP302 iPod cable (113KCIP302, sold separately). The unit's USB port handles the control, metadata display, and charging of your iPod/iPhone. You can navigate through your music and video files using the head unit's touchscreen controls and view song and movie info on its display, while your iPod/iPhone charges. The AV-3 input handles audio and video transfer from your iPod/iPhone to the Kenwood DNX9980HD. By using the AV-3 input, the music travels to the receiver as an analog signal, so you can even play the Digital-Rights-Protected files you've stored on your iPod/iPhone. The unit's AV-3 input must be set to "iPod" in order to playback audio/video from your connected iPod/iPhone. Video can only be displayed while the vehicle is in park.
    • Audio Only Playback: The DNX9980HD's rear-panel USB (iPod-2) port lets you connect a second iPod/iPhone to the head unit for audio only playback, using either the USB/iPod dock cable that came with your iPod/iPhone or Kenwood's iPod Direct Connect Cable (113KCIP102, sold separately). You will not be able to play Digital-Rights-Protected files via this connection. The USB (iPod-2) port only works with iPod/iPhone when you have another iPod/iPhone connected to the unit's USB (iPod 1) port.

Note: The DNX9980HD's main USB (iPod 1) port requires the use of the unit's AV-3 input and optional KCA-iP302 cable. The standard USB/iPod dock cable or Kenwood KCA-IP102 cable is not supported for this connection. If you are only connecting one iPod/iPhone, you must use the DNX9980HD's USB (iPod-1) port and AV-3 input, along with the optional Kenwood KCA-iP302 cable.

iPod/iPhone Control: You can choose to control the iPod/iPhone from the multimedia head unit or from your iPod/iPhone's clickwheel or touchscreen.

    • Menu Navigation:The Kenwood Excelon DNX9980HD will allow you to navigate your iPod/iPhone's music & video library by category and playlist. Once you have selected a category or playlist, you can then search its audio/video contents alphabetically (A-Z).

      • Video Browsing:You can search your iPod/iPhone's video library by Movies, Music Videos, TV Shows, Video Podcasts, or Rented Movies.
    • Favorite List: You can create an original playlist of your favorite 10 albums by selecting from Album Artwork.
    • Link Search: You can browse for music of the same artist or genre as the one being currently played. You can select between the following Link Search modes.
      • Search Artist: displays albums of the same artist

    • Repeat & Random: The multimedia head unit supports Repeat (file) & Random (folder) playback functions of your connected iPod/iPhone.

iPod/iPhone Display: The Kenwood Excelon DNX9980HD will display your iPod/iPhone's music file information when you are controlling your iPod or iPhone from the Kenwood multimedia head unit. The head unit will display Track number, Elapsed playing time, Artist name, Song title, and Album label. The unit will also display Album Art. If you choose to operate your connected iPod/iPhone via its clickwheel or touchscreen controls, the DNX9980HD will not display your iPod/iPhone's music information (the head unit will instead display "iPod Control by Hand").

Pandora App: The Pandora App (free) lets you play music from the Pandora music service through the Kenwood Excelon DNX9980HD using your connected Apple iPhone, via the Kenwood KCA-iP302 USB/iPod connector cable (sold separately), or the USB/Dock cable supplied with your iPhone. The Kenwood Excelon DNX9980HD provides control over the Pandora music service and displays Artist, Album, and Song information. You can select Pandora stations from your station list (alphabetically or by date), and skip song tracks within a station (your iPhone's touchscreen will be locked). You can also give songs a thumbs up/down and bookmark songs/artists. To access Pandora you must have an Apple iPhone (iOS3 or later) with the latest version of the Pandora application from Apple's iTunes App Store. Your iPhone will need an active Data Plan account with connection to the Internet via 3G, EDGE, or WiFi. You will also need a Pandora music service account.

Note: Access to the Pandora service will depend on the availability of a cellular and/or WiFi network for purposes of allowing your iPhone to connect to the Internet. Pandora is not supported in Canada and only available in the United States.

App Mode: When using an iPhone 4/4S with the Kenwood DNX series in-dash navigation head unit, you can view certain applications on the screen of the receiver. This allows access to a large amount of new content in your vehicle. All operation will be done from the iPhone 4/4S, but all video and audio will play through the Kenwood receiver. The unit supports iTunes Apps, such as - Netflix, SiriusXM, YouTube, Aha Radio, Facebook, and Twitter.

Note: To access these select iTunes apps, you must have an Apple iPhone 4/4S (iOS4 or later) with an active Data Plan account and connection to the Internet via 3G, EDGE, or WiFi.

iPod/iPhone Charging: While connected and the ignition switch is set to ACC or ON, the head unit's USB connection will power and charge your iPod/iPhone.

Note: If your iPod/iPhone has no initial battery charge, then the unit will not recognize it.
