Kenwood Excelon receivers are born to deliver great performance, with hot 4-volt preamp outputs for your amps and an impressive array of sound-sculpting tools. The Kenwood Excelon KDC-X898 CD receiver features Bluetooth® for hands-free calling and audio streaming your favorite music.
Bluetooth gives you hands-free calling convenience, plus a wireless connection to the songs stored on your compatible music player. If you're an Android® user who's grown tired of your old radio's complicated Bluetooth pairing issues, you'll love this receiver's simple, secure pairing (SSP) technology. If you're an iPhone® aficionado, the KDC-X898 gives you full Siri Eyes Free control with compatible Siri-equipped iPhones.
Pair your compatible phone to the KDC-X898 and you can talk hands-free by simply touching the dedicated "phone" button when a call comes in. And the receiver can reply automatically to text messages to let your contacts know that you're busy driving. An external Bluetooth microphone can be placed in an optimal location within the vehicle for improved hands-free communication.
If you enjoy Internet radio on your iPhone, Android, or Blackberry®, you'll really enjoy playing music from Pandora®, iHeart Radio®, and Aha™ radio on this great-sounding receiver. You can scroll through your stations, bookmark songs, and give a thumbs-up or thumbs-down right from the receiver's face.
The receiver's front and rear USB ports allow you to access and control the music stored on your iPhone or Android phone. With your iPhone, you also have control over iHeartRadio® and Pandora® Internet radio stations. And if you have MP3, WMA, or WAV music files on a thumb drive, the USB ports can handle those too. Here's a cool feature from Kenwood — Drive Change allows you to connect a memory card reader or USB hub to the Kenwood's USB input and select music from up to five memory cards or USB flash drives.
This Kenwood's multi-line display shows you all your song information.
The KDC-X898's text display gives you all the info you want, plus you can select display and illumination colors that match your car's dash or your mood -- your choice. The 3-line display can be switched to a 2-line format with a larger font that makes it easier to read phone numbers, song titles, and source data. Or, you can tone it down to just show the clock or a blank display.
In most vehicles, you can use an adapter (not included) to connect your vehicle's steering wheel controls to this Kenwood Excelon stereo. Connect a few wires, program the adapter for your car and this Kenwood, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls. Check the "Accessories" tab for compatible adapters.
Bluetooth note: Use of this receiver's Bluetooth features will depend upon your phone's Bluetooth capabilities. Learn more in our article explaining Bluetooth profiles.
iPod/smartphone note: If you're going to use your iPod or smartphone with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for compatibility information.
Very nice stereo, simple appearance with lots of features. The sound quality is superior to the factory radio. I have steering wheel control issues, however I suspect it's due to the adapter, not the stereo.

Average Customer Review(s):
Good unit for my son's vehicle. Hoping the hands free features will keep him safer while driving.
Excellent deck. I bought the refurbished model. Could not tell it was refurbished and it functions flawlessly. This is my first purchase of a Kenwood head unit.
Pros: Easy to use. Functions well.
Cons: Display on screen is hard to see when sunlight hits it directly.
Graet value for a great single DIN installation. This is my third Kenwood Excelon I have purchased from Crutchfield and this is one of two that were factory refurbished. Very happy.
Pros: Great value
Cons: Small buttons
Awesome head unit!
Pros: Good power and sound. Easy to use.
Worked good Bluetooth is easy to setup and have been told you can not tell I am on it.
Pros: Bluetooth works good
Cons: Just looks out dated
I got it for Bluetooth connectivity and it works very well. Phone connects automatically and launches my podcast app and starts playing, no button pushing at all. Sound quality is great and the display isn't too busy and flashy, which I don't like in my car. One thing is that I wish the clock is shown in all display modes.
Pros: Bluetooth connectivity is great
Cons: Display settings are overly complicated to set up.
Bought this rebuild Excellon unit due to my experience with Kenwood units, Crutchfield's reputation and the price. I've installed many head units, amps and speakers in vehicles. I always solder all sleeve all connections and perform ground and continuity checks. In spite of what I felt was good wiring, the unit continued to go into "Protect" mode after several resets and power cycles. I've got plenty of work to do, I don't need to be fighting with my car stereo!
Pros: Features, features, features. Good sound when it works.
Cons: "Protect" mode prone in spite of accurate speaker wiring

MOSFET Amplifier: The Kenwood KDC-X898 is equipped with a MOSFET amplifier. Compared to conventional power supplies, the MOSFET amplification circuit is smaller and more efficient, and it delivers increased power with less distortion and absolutely zero on/off switching noise. More power means louder and cleaner music at higher volumes because you're not pushing the limits of the amplification circuit. The power output specs for the KDC-X898 are as follows:
6ch/4V Preamp Outputs: The KDC-X898 features front, rear and subwoofer 4.0-volt preamp outputs. The front and rear speaker preamp outputs are balance and fade adjustable. The subwoofer preamp output is non-fading. The front, rear, and subwoofer preamp outputs are fixed to the rear chassis of the head unit.

You can adjust the high-pass crossover from "Through", 100, 120, or 150 Hz. The "Through" selection is a full-range setting.
Subwoofer Controls: The Kenwood KDC-X898 offers the following subwoofer controls, when you are using unit's subwoofer preamp output.
Speaker Settings: The Speaker Setting function tailors the head unit's audio settings according to the type of speakers in your vehicle. You may select a Speaker Setting of 'SP-Off' (flat/off), 'SP-OEM' (for OEM factory speaker systems), 'SP-6x9/6' (for systems with 6" and 6"x9" speakers), or 'SP-5/4' (for systems with 4" and 5" speakers).
EQ Pro: The KDC-X898 is equipped with Kenwood's EQ Pro. The integrated equalizer offers 8 preset sound modes (Rock, Pops, Easy, Top 40, Jazz, Natural, Drive EQ, or User) suitable for the music genre of your choice. The Drive EQ mode is an EQ preset that helps reduce road noise. The User mode allows you to manually adjust the head unit's 3-band parametric EQ (Frequency, Level, and Q-Factor).

Note: You can store EQ Pro bass, middle and treble tone settings for each source (Disc, Tuner, Aux, USB, iPod, and Pandora/iHeart Radio).
Sound Enhancements: The head unit provides further sound enhancements for your car audio system.

Bluetooth Technology: The Kenwood KDC-X898 is equipped with built-in Bluetooth (ver. 2.1 + EDR) allowing you to make and receive phone calls wirelessly through the receiver; as well as stream music wirelessly from your smartphone to the head unit. Best car stereo I ever own [ Ervey Oct 06, 2016 ]
It looks like the USB operation will be much better than the Alpine iDA-X200 unit I've been using for the last 7 years. In that unit every time the unit is turned on it must re-index the songs on the USB drive. That takes quite a while and in the meantime, you don't have access to all the songs. Reading the manual for this unit it appears that you can use a PC based application - Kenwood Music Editor Light - to make a database file on the USB drive that the unit will use. [ Maurice Oct 06, 2016 ]
