Kenwood's Excelon XR400-4 4-channel amplifier adds clarity and punch to your car's audio system, as it powers each of your front and rear speakers with 75 watts RMS. As your system changes, you can also use the XR400-4 in 2-channel mode to drive a couple of subs with up to 200 watts RMS each. The XR400-4 can fit in many different places in your car because of its incredibly low profile — it's under 1-1/2" tall.
Kenwood packed this amp with space-saving features. Class D technology reduces the size of the power supply, while the internal heatsink is tilted to reduce height without compromising the amp's cooling system. Recessed power and speaker wire terminals help to further reduce the amp's footprint, protect the connections, and give your installation a neat, professional look.
You can contour the sound with high- and low-pass filters so your speakers play efficiently and sound their best. The front and rear channels have separate gain and filter controls so you can adjust for different types of speakers. The XR400-4 also gives you the ability to "biamp" your system, amplifying the tweeters and woofers separately for greater power and control over the sound.

Great Lil amp
Great clean sound would buy again and may for another car
Might be a good amp, I don't know. I got this to save a few bucks and I guess I didnt get the lucky draw. I had it 90% installed, mounted and ready to roll and when I went to put in the last set of speaker wires, the allen head screw was tightened down like the other but it was stripped. I own a lot of tools and was willing to do whatever it took to get that screw out. However, there was just nothing at all to grab on to since the screws are countersunk and rounded off. BUMMER! Upon removing from box, I saw it had more blemishes than I would usually accept on a refurb item BUT since it was going to be behind the back seat of an f150 supercab and never seen, I figured I could live with it. Nail in the coffin was the stripped screw head. * Packing from kenwood I assume was a cardboard box, filler cardboard strips on either side of the amp and peanuts. No plastic over the amp either. Was packing like you would see if you ordered it offline from an individual. The guys at Crutchfield were nice about letting me send it back. I chose to buy new instead and not kenwood model.

Cons: Packaging was sub par, Quality control was not what it should have been from a name like kenwood.
I purchased the Kenwood Excelon XR400-4 to replace a STEG 4.01 that had gone out in my 2001 Porsche 911 Carrera. So, everything was already wired, and ready for install. I simply used the included Allen wrenches to connect the wiring up and it was ready to go. The covered Allen bolts that clamp down on the wiring are great. This is much better than spring connectors or exposed screws. I'm not pumping big bass or anything like that. I'm pushing Focal speakers all around with cross-overs. I get plenty of power and the sound quality is still great. The form factor is MUCH smaller than the STEG it replaced. That made me a bit concerned about heat, but I haven't noticed much in the way of heat yet either.

I have a 2013 Toyota Corolla S as my daily commute car. The deck I installed is a Kenwood Excelon DNX892 with Nav. I added a pair of Kicker component speakers in the front, and a pair of Kicker 6x9's in the rear. The system sounded good, but definitely lacked the punch and detail I wanted. So, I bought a refurbished XR400-4, and the sound is now much better. Clearer highs and punchier lows - no, not as good as having a subwoofer, though (that'll be the next project). This amp has such a small footprint, and has all the necessary frequency adjustments that I need for fine-tuning the sound. Just remember that the "Input Sensitivity" setting is not the same as a volume control - and so don't just turn that setting all the way up or you'll get unwanted distortion.
Pros: Small footprint for 75w rms, adjustability, clarity, great price for a refurb.

I have 09 Silverado don't have a lot of room. used this amp for my door speakers .amp gets a little warm but sound great.
I have been in the market for a small for factor high quality amplifier for a year. The space this thing takes up is roughly equivalent to a paperback book . the speakers used are from PhD and cdt and were originally powered from the internal amplifier of a JBL MS8. Quality was the next deciding factor the Rockford fosgate pbr amps were contenders too but after reading about heat issues I was worried about degrading sound quality . that's where the Kenwood xr400-4 fell into play. It gets warm but never hot to the touch its tucked away in a tight spot but is a sleek looking amp to boot. The quality of sound and power driven to the speakers now is fantastic, it was like falling in love with the stereo all over.

For the price this amp is amazing .. I usually go with a jl audio for my 4 channel but this one had decent reviews so I gave it a shot, that and my deck is an excelon .. I have this amp pushing a type r 6.5 component set in front and a alpine type r 5.25 set in rear .. More than enough power for all and the design profile is amazing it's small enough to fit under the dash in some applications .. I put mine under my seat so I can tune it easily

It's a nice amp,clean power.The output watts are way over rated I am using the amp to power infinity kappa 6x8 speakers and i would say you would be lucky to get 50 watt RMS at 2 ohm.But that's plenty for me.

I purchased this as a refurb. The packaging was pretty bad to be honest. Not on par with the normal packaging I have received from Crutchfield. It seems the item was shipped back from Kenwood to Crutchfield in a box with no peanuts or wrapping of any kind thus the amp was slamming around inside a box about 2-3 inches larger than the amp all the way around. When it was shipped to me that box was stuffed into a much larger box filled with peanuts. Still slamming around inside the smaller box... Very poor Packing by the Shipping and receiving department. The item itself was a great product by a great Company. I paired this to run a pair of Polk DB461's and a pair of Infinity Kappa 93.11i's with a KAC-8105D that runs my 2 12" MTX JH45's. Superb value in size and features. The ability to run one set of RCA's in to power two separate pairs of speakers yet be able to use the pass filters = awesome. you can run 4 pairs of speakers on a 6 output headunit which is a super value if you want to run kicker area component speakers, door speakers and a sub. The amp itself worked fine for a refurb I have no issues and you can't beat it for the price. Both my amps are Kenwood's and they are great bang for the buck. I would not hesitate to recommend the product.

This amp lives up to the Kenwood reputation of producing clean, distortion-free sound. It's small profile makes for an easy install beneath the seats, and the adjustment options are plentiful and effective. I've tried other products, but I always come back to Kenwood.

CEA-2006 Compliant: CEA-2006 is a system of testing and measurement methods for mobile audio amplifiers. This voluntary standard advocates a uniform method for measuring an amplifier's RMS power output and signal-to-noise ratio. The criteria for measuring power uses a DC input voltage of 14.4 volts and the RMS power output is measured into a 4-ohm load, with 1% or less Total Harmonic Distortion plus noise (THD+N), and over a frequency range of 20 Hz to 20 kHz, when applicable. Signal-to-Noise ratio is measured in weighted absolute decibels (dBA) at a reference of 1 watt into 4 ohms. CEA-2006 allows consumers to compare car amplifiers and receivers on an equal basis. Using CEA-2006 criteria, the Kenwood XR400-4 is rated at 75 Watts RMS x 4 channels with a 76 dBA signal to noise ratio.
Specifications: The manual also lists these non CEA-2006 compliant specifications:
Class D Amplifier Design: The amplifier design is Class D, which uses digital switching power supplies. The result is much higher efficiency (less heat generated) than Class AB.
4-Channel Amp: The front and rear sections of the amplifier (labeled A and B) have independent gain and crossover controls.
Crossovers: The front and rear crossovers can be independently set to high-pass, low-pass, or turned off (full range). The crossover points are continuously variable with a selectable range, from 50-200 Hz or 2.5-10 kHz and the slope is 12dB per octave.
Aluminum Heat Sink: The aluminum heat sink increases the amplifier's heat dissipation efficiency, increasing the life of the amplifier.

I' am running a pair of Kappa 693.11i's and a pair of Polk DB461's. Amp runs like a champ. It's a 4 way so not sure how you're gonna run 6 speakers off of it unless you're just using a set of components. [ christian Jan 29, 2015 ]

I run (4) OEM speakers in my truck. At moderate volumes, the amp runs pretty warm / borderline hot. I have no idea what the impedance values are for these stock speakers, and suspect they're between 4-6 ohm. Note - my front set are separate bass/tweeter combo, but I consider them a single unit. Thus far, I haven't experienced any issues - but my installation is open and there's nothing restricting cooling. For you to run a pair of drivers off a single output means you would expect to see impedance numbers drop to the range of 1-2 ohms (if attaching in parallel), and I would expect that to increase demands on the amp (read - run even hotter). However, I suspect you may also run into audio imaging and balance/fader related issues with such an hookup. [ steve Jan 29, 2015 ]
It's only a four channel amp. So you can run your doors and rears just fine and add your tweeters in with your front doors and it will word just fine as long as you don't exceed the amp specs [ Chase Jan 29, 2015 ]

Look at where the speaker outputs for the speaker wire are. At the bottom it has two different bridged labels showing where to put your positive and negative speaker wire for each of the 2 subs. One sub will use the positive output of the left channel of A for the positive speaker wire and the negative output of the right channel in A for the negative speaker wire. Follow bridging instructions on amplifier, far positive to far negative. Set frequency to 80hz or lower on both channels. You may need a rca y adaptor to send signal to both channels on amp. But I recommend a mono sub amp. [ Sean Feb 03, 2017 ]
