Overview

Our take on the Sonos PLAYBASE

The Sonos PLAYBASE is just about the easiest way to get spacious, realistic sound from your TV. It's a low-profile base that simply sits directly underneath your TV, yet it fills the room with rich Sonos sound. Just use the provided digital audio cable to connect your TV to the PLAYBASE, and you'll be up and running in no time.

Sonos PLAYBASE

The slim profile of the PLAYBASE helps it fit easily into your room's decor.

Spacious TV sound and more

The Sonos PLAYBASE is just about the easiest way to get spacious, realistic sound from your TV. It's a low-profile base that simply sits directly underneath your TV, yet it fills the room with rich Sonos sound. Just use the provided digital audio cable to connect your TV to the PLAYBASE, and you'll be up and running in no time.

Plus, the PLAYBASE becomes part of your Sonos wireless multi-room audio system. You can send sound from your TV to other rooms, or play music from other sources through the PLAYBASE.

Made for movies and music

The PLAYBASE features ten amplified internal drivers. Six midrange drivers and three tweeters are angled to widely disperse the sound while ensuring proper balance. A built-in woofer for bass frequencies provides additional punch.

The system's Speech Enhancement mode brings dialogue to the fore and reduces the volume level of loud sound effects. Night Mode enhances quiet sounds and greatly reduces loud effects, so you can watch TV while other sleep.

The PLAYBASE also delivers great sound with your music, too. You'll hear plenty of detail and well-balanced, natural sound from your tunes.

Wireless home theater options

The PLAYBASE can be paired wirelessly with a Sonos SUB to create a 3.1 home theater system. Add two PLAY:1 speakers, and you've got a pair of wireless rear speakers, giving you a 5.1 surround system with truly engaging sound.

Like your TV up a little higher? The Sanus WSTV1 TV base was designed for use with the PLAYBASE. It features a 29”-high swivel mount, so you can have your TV at a higher viewing level without wall-mounting.

Part of a Sonos multi-room audio system

The PLAYBASE, like other Sonos music players, connect to your home network — either via Wi-Fi® or by connecting one player to your router via Ethernet to create a dedicated Sonos network. This network, known for its extensive range and superior performance, gives you house-wide access to tunes stored on your PC along with a wealth of Internet audio choices.

And it lets you stream audio from your movies and TV shows into other rooms. So if you're watching a game you can keep up with the play-by-play through a Sonos speaker in the kitchen when you get a snack. (For the best wireless performance, we recommend adding the Sonos BOOST.)

The Sonos app gives you easy wireless control

You can use your iPhone®, iPod touch®, iPad®, or Android™ smartphone or tablet to control any and all Sonos players. A free download turns your smartphone and tablet into a full-fledged Sonos controller. Easily navigate and search through playlists and tracks stored on your computer, or select an internet radio station. Create customized playlists on the fly for individual rooms or for playback over your entire Sonos system. You can also mute or adjust the volume of each of your players.

Trueplay speaker tuning for optimal sound

If you use your Sonos control app on an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, you can use that same Apple device to fine-tune the PLAYBASE with Sonos's Trueplay feature. It uses the mic built into your device to measure how the sound reflects off your walls and furnishings. It then adjusts the speaker's settings automatically for the best possible sound. (Currently for iOS devices only.)

Over 30 streaming music services on demand

The Sonos system works seamlessly with a host of streaming music services, including TIDAL, Spotify®, Pandora®, and much more. You also have access to thousands of internet radio stations from around the world through TuneIn Radio and terrestrial radio stations through iHeartRadio. If you subscribe to SiriusXM Internet Radio, you can tune into all your favorite programming on any Sonos player in your system.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The Sonos PlayBase is a wonderful Product. I gave it 4 Stars only because there was no way to give it 4.25 - 4.5 Stars. Nothing is perfect, but for what it was made for and for what it does, this product is close. Science & Technology has been applied here to a very high degree. Build Quality is beyond reproach. Again, the Sonos PlayBase is a Wonderful product. Crutchfield fits right in here. They are The Place too Buy Electronics Online.

Pros: Top Science & Technology applied here. First Class Build Quality. Engineered Packaging & Boxing beyond reproach. Ease of Use & Set Up 4.5

Cons: In my view, a Quality Priced Product such as Sonos should carry a Full 3 YEAR Parts & Labor Warranty.

Pretty good sound. A huge improvement over the TV speakers. Bought the sub woofer and two Play 1 to complete the 5.1 system. Still learning new things that the system will do? So far so good.

Pros: Good sound quality. Nice fit with current set up.

Cons: Some difficulty using my Kindle Fire as a controller (still working on) Sometimes can't tell if the Play 1s are even on.

Demetrios from Ellicott City, MD on 12/23/2017

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Excellent sound for a sound bar based system. I purchased the 5.1 surround sound system consisting of a PLAYBASE with woofer, and two series-1 rears. The setup via iPhone Sonos APP was outstanding being super easy and well thought out. Had to figure out how to turn off the internal speakers on my Panasonic 65" plasma TV. It ending up being nothing more than pushing the TV remote mute button (no TV setup menu option), and then using a surrogate old TV remote that was programmed via the Sonos APP to control the volume of the Sonos system. This took almost no time to do. Overall extremely pleased with this high quality surround sound system.

Pros: Excellent sound Easy setup High quality packaging and equipment Great support from both Sonos and Crutchfield

Cons: No dedicated volume control remote Pricey

Wonderful sound; nice aesthetics.

Richard W. from Pittsburgh, PA on 12/18/2017

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The Playbase is a wonderful product. It gives the same great sound that comes from the Playbar, but with two distinct advantages. The first is that the Playbase has a subwoofer while the Playbar does not. Second, it is more aesthetically pleasing, especially in my wife's eyes. It is a slimmer, sleeker, less obtrusive design than the Playbar or most other sound bars. Once I added a Playsub and two Play 3s for rear effects, the results are stunning for both TV viewing and music playback! It's a fantastic combination, with the added benefit of being wireless. The set up and connection is a breeze. The only drawback is that the Playbase does not work with my TV remote. The volume has to be controlled through the Sonos App or a universal remote. I saw all of the five-star reviews, and now I understand what everyone was talking about. This is a winner!

Pros: Wonderful sound Easy set-up

Cons: Price Does not work with TV remote.

Without question this is absolutely one of the best investments in audio sound I have ever made. The ability to play audio over the entire home without having to run wires is fantastic. Paired with 4 other speakers I am able to immerse over 2000 sqft with the audio of my choice.

Perfect for my application

Joe from Rolla, MO on 10/30/2017

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The playbase is the perfect solution for my situation. I had grown tired of straightening cords and rugs in the living room after each of my two young dogs play sessions. It was a miracle they had not torn speakers off of the wall! I purchased the playbase and paired it with a sub. The sound is just right for my living room. Using the night sound and speech enhancement allows me to hear all of the dialogue and not get blown away by explosions. The playbase fits perfectly under my tv. It paired with the cable box remote for volume adjustment. I have no complaints at all.

Pros: Clean look. Great sound.

Perfect choice for our setup. Worked precisely as described , set up was simple & sounds fantastic . We are using this for a single floor 1000sq ft beach house - it shares sound perfectly around the spaces. Will be purchasing a Sonos one with Alexa to further improve the capabilities ! Full disclosure - I have (7) Sonos in our Main House - so I'm a huge fan of the product

Pros: Easy set up Great sound from a basic set up - realize this is not an Audiophile set up- but that is probably .05% of the listening public anyways

Cons: Really don't have any

The Playbase fits nicely on the shelf below my TV with being a distraction or taking up significant space. The set up and integration is extremely straight forward, with startup done via an iPhone app. We have had the unit for about 4 weeks now and the entire family is amazed by the sound quality for movies and sports alike. Great purchase

Pros: Sound, clean look, easy integration

I have a 65" tv which needed the playbase to support the weight. Very pleased with the quality of the sound. We have an open floor plan and cathedral ceilings. Perfect for this surround sound with a sub and two play 5s.

Pros: Very easy set up.

This thing is amazing. Room filling sound in a beautiful package. One very nice, but understated, feature is that you can turn off the controls on the unit itself. Super helpful for those with small children who love pressing buttons! Can't wait to add the Sub and complete the 5.1 setup (though the sound is still fantastic using only the Playbase).

Pros: Ease of setup, great sound

Cons: None

Couldn't be Happier

Jeff from Fresno, CA on 9/14/2017

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Amazing technology . . . the most difficult part of setting this up was keeping my kids quiet long enough to do the Trueplay tuning. I spent several months looking at products to replace my 15 year old 5.1 system. I wanted to simplify things and the Playbase seemed like a great option. It takes up the same footprint as my TV and I was able to eliminate 3 front speakers and a receiver. The price really held me back and I spent a lot of time looking at the Yamaha MusicCast, Denon HEOS, Polk Omni and Bose Soundtouch products. The reviews on these just didn't seem solid and there were consistent complaints with setup or maintaining wireless connections. Also, I was unsure about the proprietary Sonos platform and I wasn't terribly impressed when I demo'd it at a local box store. But I knew it would sound a lot different in a living room as opposed to a giant warehouse. So I put my trust in the hundreds of positive reviews and jumped on board. And I'm so glad I did. It sounds fantastic and the technology is great. I also purchased the Sonos Sub. My living room is about 20' x 20' with an open kitchen and dining room. I tested the Playbase without the sub first and it sounded really good. But for the amount of open space that we have the Sub added the extra depth and punch to bring the movies and music to life. This combination is more than enough for our needs. My next upgrade will be the Sonos Amp to run a pair of in ceiling surrounds.

Pros: Audio Quality Build Quality (at 19 lbs. this thing is solid) Technology

Cons: Price Proprietary Technology (no Bluetooth) Requires Spotify Premium subscription to use Spotify

Really blown away by the new Sonos product. I bought it for the ease in set up and usability that Sonos is excels at but am really pleased with the sound quality. In my opinion it is just as good, if not better, than a mid range true 5.1.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The Sonos Playbase is a great product. It has great sound and is easy to install by using the sonos directions provided. I researched speakers for sound clarity which I need due to poor hearing. The Sonos Playbase provides clear speech for TV. In addition it became the third part of my Sonos system. The TV remote was easy to program. If you are listening to music and turn the TV on it automatically switches to the TV.

Pros: Great sound for music and the TV. Very easy installation.

Replaced a Sony HT-NT5 after two failures and too much complexity for my wife. This soundbase is the best! The sound is way better (even without a sub) than the NT5 that has a sub. Setup is easy. Programming my TWC remote was a snap. Use is seamless. All in all a vast improvement from the Sony. I can't imagine the sound if a sub is added to this system.

Love the design. Never liked the look of sound bars but a base... perfect. Sound is great, bass is just fine for condo living. I do plan to buy some Play one speakers later this year to get full surround going. Definitely a great, simple solution for TVs.

Pros: Great design, great sound, simple setup

Cons: Non so far

Awesome!

J.R. from Drexel Hill, PA on 7/9/2017

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Awesome sound, and easy setup. I added two play:1 speakers (I already had one in the house I was using, I purchased a second) for the rear setup (no sub yet) and it is even better, AND WIRELESS! No more running speaker wires under the floor of the house or fishing in the walls. I'm looking to add the sub in the future but really no need yet. The sound from the playbase itself is great without any additional setups.

Pros: Sounds Great Easy Setup

Cons: Price

Very solid soundbase. Great software - easy to connect to with my Google Play Music collection (which taps into my iTunes collection). Pandora, etc.. works phenomenally well. Love not having a remote for the soundbase. My only complaint is that I think the bass isn't strong enough compared to my old soundbar (which had a subwoofer) - I'm going to have to save up for the Sonos sub.

This unit really knocked my socks off. I am sure the real sound purists are rolling their eyes but the combination of features, price, and crazy simple setup is unmatched by anything else on the market. I assembled the Playbase, a Boost, & two Sonos 1s for surround and got a great 5.1 system for my living room for half the price of an amp/receiver- based setup. Plus all the other Sonos advantages. Do not fail to use the Trueplay configuration scheme.

Pros: Dead simple setup Value for money Flexible operating modes

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I originally purchased a Bose Solo (not from Crutchfield) but found that everything sounded muffled, so returned it. I'm happy to say that the Sonos Playbase which I just purchased produces crisp, clear sound. The bass is tight, just not thumping or booming. It's sufficient for me, but I might consider getting the sub-woofer in the future. Quite happy for now. I set the system up using an iPhone. Just a minor glitch with wireless access, but it's working fine now. Very pleased with both the Sonos Playbase and the service I received from Crutchfield.

Pros: Crisp, clear audio. Easy setup Excellent product packaging

Michael from Summit, NJ on 4/30/2017

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

We got it in black and we couldn't be happier. The night feature which raises the level of dialogue while reducing really loud sounds is great for when we're watching at night when the kids are asleep. Really nice. Also, while the footprint is quite large, it shouldn't be a problem if you're putting your TV on top. In our case, we have a wall mounted TV and have it tucked in between our console and our fireplace hearth, so we're taking advantage of how it's only 2 inches tall. It fits ideally.

Pros: Sound quality.

Cons: It's large. We have it mostly obscured, but it has a very large footprint, so that might not appeal to some.

Soundbase Speaker: Complement your flat-panel television with the Sonos PlayBase speaker for rich, room-filling HiFi sound. The Sonos PlayBase is simple to setup, control, and expand. It requires only two cable connections - a power cord & optical digital audio cable. The PlayBase supports playback of all sources connected to your TV; such as cable/satellite, Blu-ray/DVD player, video game system, etc. The Sonos PlayBase can also wirelessly stream music from your computer, as well as various online music services and Internet Radio. The PlayBase can even sync with other Sonos speakers wirelessly. The unit can be controlled from your TV's remote, or by your Apple iOS device or Android smartphone using the free Sonos App from iTunes or Google Play.

Note: The PlayBase works with all amplified and non-amplified Sonos products (sold separately).

Active 10-Speaker Design: The Sonos PlayBase speaker features a sophisticated 10-speaker design with three tweeters (the left & right tweeters are angled for a wider sound stage), six midrange drivers, and one subwoofer. Each speaker is driven by a perfectly matched Class D amplifier. The PlayBase acts as your front left, front right, and center-channel speaker.

Optical Digital Input (Dolby Digital/PCM): The Sonos PlayBase speaker connects to your television via its optical (toslink) digital input. The unit supports both Dolby Digital (5.1ch) and PCM (2ch) audio signals through its digital input. Make sure to turn your television's speakers off.

  • Dolby Digital: Your television's off-air and network movie apps can be delivered in Dolby Digital format to the PlayBase. The PlayBase will decode and utilize up to six discrete sound channels (five channels for center, right front, left front, right rear, and left rear; and 1 discrete Low-Frequency Effects (LFE) or subwoofer channel) available through the Dolby Digital format. Not compatible with Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD, DTS, DTS HD, or any other surround format (only supports Dolby Digital 2ch to 5.1ch).
  • Stereo/PCM: AV sources connected to your TV (such as Blu-ray, cable/satellite, video game) are delivered in Stereo/PCM format to the PlayBase. The PlayBase will decode the Stereo/PCM format into a left front and right front channels directly from the 2 channel Stereo provided and will decode a matrixed center, right rear, left rear, and subwoofer channel from the audio signal.
Note: The digital optical output terminals of most newer flat-panel TVs only send an audio signal in 5.1ch when receiving Dolby Digital/DTS surround sound from the TV's built-in tuner, network connection, or connected USB device; and will output only 2ch stereo from sources connected to the TV via HDMI, or RCA (like your Blue-ray/DVD player or satellite/cable box).

Mounting Options: The Sonos PlayBase can rest under the pedestal stand or between the pedestal feet of your flat-panel TV. The PlayBase can support TVs weighing up to 77 lbs with a pedestal stand that measure no more than 28.375" wide x 14.9375" deep. It can also fit in between a TV's pedestal feet that measure no less than 28.375" apart and 2.3125" high. In addition, you can simply place the Sonos PlayBase on a shelf that is located under or above the TV; allow at least 2" of open space around the speaker.

Trueplay Tuning (for Apple iOS): The layout of a room, and where a speaker is placed, can have a significant impact on the sound that you hear. Trueplay, an auto-tune app within the Sonos App,  uses the microphone in your Apple iOS 8.0+ device to measure how sound reflects off walls, furnishings and other surfaces in a room, and then fine tunes the Sonos PlayBase speaker to make sure it sounds great no matter where you've placed it. The Sonos PlayBase speaker already sounds fantastic, but Trueplay brings you even closer to how music should sound. Completing Trueplay tuning for a room takes approximately 3 minutes from start to finish.

Note: Trueplay is currently not compatible with Android.

Equalization (EQ): During the PlayBase setup process you will be guided through its audio calibration process. If desired, you can change the sound settings (bass, treble or loudness) for the Sonos PlayBase. Bass boosts lower frequencies, treble boosts higher frequencies, while loudness boosts both bass and treble to improve the sound at low volume.

Sound Options: The Sonos PlayBase offers various sound settings to customize your listening experience.

  • Speech Enhancements: The Speech Enhancement setting makes the TV dialog easier to hear.
  • Night Sound: The Night Sound setting adjusts the audio for night time viewing so you can reduce the volume and still experience proper balance and range. At lower volumes, quiet sounds are enhanced and the intensity of loud sounds is reduced.
  • Audio Delay (Lip Sync): You can increase or decrease the sound delay if the image on your TV and the sound from the PlayBase are not in sync.

TV Auto Play: When TV Auto Play is set to On, TV audio automatically plays through the PlayBase when you turn on your television. If music is playing when the TV is turned on, the music immediately stops and the PlayBase switches to TV audio.

IR Sensor: The Sonos PlayBase speaker does not come with a remote, but does offer a built-in IR sensor, so you can program your TV's remote control to operate volume up/down of the system. Many newer TVs are coming with RF remotes and don't offer IR functionality. In this case, you would not be able to program the speaker and TV remote to work together.

Wireless 5.1ch Speaker System: Add the Sonos Wireless Subwoofer (616SUB1, sold separately) and a pair of Sonos One (616ONEBLK, sold separately), Sonos Play:1 (616PLAY1B, sold separately), Sonos Play:3 (616ZPS3B: sold separately), or Sonos Play:5 (616PLAY52B; sold separately) for a wireless 5.1ch surround sound experience. Now you don't have to run wires to a powered sub or rear speakers to enjoy true 5.1ch audio. In conjunction with the Sonos Boost (616BOOST, sold separately), you can even use the Sonos Connect:Amp (616ZP120, sold separately) as a rear amplifier with separate rear speakers; in this configuration you will still need to run wire between the rear speakers and the Connect:Amp.

Network Audio Features

Sonos Multiroom Eco-System: The PlayBase is part of the Sonos wireless multiroom music eco-system consisting of a family of wireless network speakers, players, and amplifiers. Start with the Playbar soundbar speaker and add other Sonos products - including the Sonos PLAY:1 / PLAY:3 / PLAY:5 powered speakers, the Sonos One voice-activated speaker, and the Sonos Connect:Amp / Connect zone players (all sold separately). With multiple zones, you can play the same or different songs in different rooms of your home. Up to 32 Sonos devices can be connected in one system.

Two Ways to Connect Wirelessly: Sonos brings great sounding music wirelessly to any room in your house, without a big wiring project through SonosNet or WiFi.

  • SonosNet Wireless Mesh Network: Sonos can utilize its own SonosNet proprietary wireless mesh network technology to provides superior wireless range for whole-house coverage, ensure synchronous music playback, and avoid sources of wireless interference. The transmitting range of the Sonos wireless system is approximately 100', depending upon your home's layout. In addition to the PlayBase, you will need a Sonos Boost (sold separately) connected to your network router/modem via a Ethernet cable.
  • WiFi Wireless Network: Sonos can also operate over your home's existing WiFi network (802.11 b/g; 2.4GHz). Because you are connecting wirelessly to your home's existing WiFi network, you do not need to hardwire a Sonos Boost to your router/modem. The Sonos system's wireless range will be dependent on your home's existing WiFi network.
Notes:
  • You cannot connect the Sonos system via both the SonosNet proprietary mesh network and WiFi; you will need to choose one. Sonos recommends using its proprietary SonosNet wireless mesh network over WiFi when applicable.
  • The Sonos proprietary mesh network will provide a more secure wireless connection with fewer interruptions for optimum performance.
  • WiFi is subject to greater interference from other WiFi and 2.4GHz devices on your network. WiFi connectivity is not compatible with 5GHz (you will have to use the Sonos wireless mesh network in this case).

Ethernet Port (10/100 Mbps): In addition to built-in WiFi, the Sonos PlayBase is equipped with one Ethernet port (10/100 Mbps). Use it to wire directly to your router to operate Sonos if WiFi is unstable, or use the Ethernet port to provide Internet accessibility to non-wireless devices if you're using a SonosNET Boost setup.

Music Streaming Services: Sonos gives you access to unlimited music; such as your iTunes library, your favorite music services, and thousands of Internet radio stations, shows, and podcasts.

  • Online Music Services: Sonos works seamlessly with TuneIn, Spotify, Pandora, SiriusXM, Google Play Music, Apple Music, Amazon Music, iHeartRadio, Rhapsody, TIDAL, Deezer, SoundCloud, and more; plus downloads from any service offering DRM-free tracks. (Service availability varies by region.) Click here for the latest online music services. (Some online services require a paid subscription.)
  • Music Libraries: Sonos supports playback of music from any computer or network-attached storage (NAS) device on your home network where you have shared music folders. Sonos can play music stored on up to 16 PCs, Macs or NAS (Network Attached Storage) devices on your home network, supporting the most popular audio formats. Sonos indexes your music folders so you can view your music collection by categories (such as artists, albums, composers, genres, or tracks). Sonos supports the following audio file formats - MP3 (compressed), WMA (compressed), AAC (MPEG4), iTunes, Ogg Vorbis, Audible (format 4), Apple Lossless, FLAC (lossless), WAV (uncompressed), and AIFF (uncompressed).
  • iTunes Music: The Sonos wireless music system supports the playback of music and playlists managed with your iTunes account (playlists are limited to 40,000 tracks). Sonos can access your iTunes music files from your network computer or directly from your Apple iPod iOS device (4.0+) running the Sonos app.

Sonos Controller App: Sonos allows you to control its audio setup, playback functions, and search features through the Sonos Controller app for Apple iOS 9.0+ and Android OS 4.3+ devices, or the Sonos Controller software for Windows PC (7-up) and Mac OS X 10.10-up computers. The new navigation bar (My Sonos, Rooms, Browse, Search and More) at the bottom of the app makes finding what you're looking for effortless and moving between music quicker than ever.

  • My Sonos: Organize your music with the My Sonos tab. It's the simplest way to combine and access all the music you love. Bringing together in one simple screen all your favorite songs, playlists, albums, podcasts and radio stations from across your different music services.
  • Now Playing: The Now Playing screen features album art and basic playback controls. For a deeper look into the music you're listening to, the "Info View" screen gives you artist bios, album reviews and concert listings. See related artist suggestions to discover a new band for your queue. You can also add to your playlists, delete songs from your library, and share tracks to Twitter or Facebook.
  • Rooms: You can choose to play different songs in different rooms, choose to group all rooms together to hear the same music throughout your home, or choose to group only certain rooms together for music playback. You can also crank up the volume for each room individually or together.
  • Browse & Search: Browse your music services, favorites, internet radio, personal music library and playlists. You can browse your music content by Album, Artist, Song, or Playlist. You can even search across all of your music services and files simultaneously, so you can find the music you love instantly.
  • More: Provides personalized & custom settings for your Sonos system. Adjust and audio settings like bass, treble, balance, and loudness for each room location.
Note: The Sonos device, Apple iOS/Android device, Windows PC, and/or Mac computer must be connected to the same wireless network.

Alexa Compatible: Through a free network software update you'll be able to control your Sonos system through any Alexa-enabled device - including the Sonos One, Amazon Echo, Echo Dot, Tap, and Echo Show (all sold separately). Using the Amazon Alexa device as you normally would; just say "Alexa" and the name of the Sonos room you want to play a particular music service through when instructing Alexa to play music. Play a song, skip forward and back through playlists, target one room or an existing group of rooms, and adjust volume - all using your voice.

  • Alexa supports Amazon Music, Pandora, iHeartRadio, TuneIn Radio, and SiriusXM music services (Spotify control is coming soon). When instructing Alexa to play a particular artist, the song will begin playing from your default music service, set in the Alexa app, unless you specify the service in your voice instruction.
  • Any non-music related commands will still play over your Alexa device (weather, traffic, flash briefs, etc).
Notes:
  • For a list of Alex voice commands you can use with Sonos, click here.
  • Your Sonos equipment and Amazon Alexa-enabled devices must be on the same WiFi network.

Google Assistant: The Google Assistant will be supported by Sonos in 2018 through an over-the-network firmware update.

Home Network Requirements: To access Internet music services, Internet radio, and any digital music stored on your computer or Network-Attached Storage (NAS) device, your home network must meet the following requirements:

  • High-speed DSL/Cable modem, or fiber-to-the-home broadband connection for proper playback of Internet-based music services. If your Internet service provider only offers Satellite Internet access, you may experience playback issues due to fluctuation in download rates.
  • If your modem is not a modem/router combination and you want to take advantage of Sonos' automatic online updates, or stream music from an Internet-based music service, you must install a wireless router in your home network. If you don't have a wireless router, you will need to purchase and install one before setting up your system.
  • You will need the Sonos Controller application for Apple iOS 9.0+ and Android OS 4.3+, or the Sonos Controller software program for Windows PC 7-up and Mac OS x 10.10-up.
  • Connect at least one Sonos component to your home network router using an Ethernet cable, and then you can add other Sonos components wirelessly. Or setup your Sonos component wirelessly via WiFi without any hardwire connection.
  • For best results, you should connect the computer or NAS drive that contains your personal music library collection to your home network router using an Ethernet cable.
  • Make sure all of your Sonos components have the latest software update installed.
Note: Although Sonos is compatible with most networking equipment, some network devices are incompatible. Usually when networking hardware does not work with Sonos, it's because it lacks support for the network protocols that Sonos uses to operate, like UPnP, STP, and SMB/CIFS. Click here for a list of networking equipment that is incompatible with Sonos; be aware that the majority of this list is made up of older networking equipment, but may still exist as part of a home network.

Automatic Updates: The Sonos PlayBase supports free automatic software updates so you will always have the newest features and music services to enjoy. Simply register the PlayBase and Sonos will automatically notify you when software updates are available through Sonos Controller app. By simply pressing one button your system updates itself.

If you use the optical cable from your TV or satellite box to the Playbase your regular remote will control the volume for TV. All other sources will need the Sonos app. Switching is automatic when the TV comes on. [ Robert  Aug 30, 2017 ]
Yes, the playbase will allow you to use almost any remote to control volume, and it's very easy to program during initial setup. [ Benjamin  Aug 30, 2017 ]
You should be able to. I do it with my century link prism box. You plug it into the IR slot on back of tv and adjust tv settings I recall. [ Matthew  Aug 30, 2017 ]
The playbase plays the audio from your source. You will able to use you remote to control the volume. [ SUJINDER  Aug 30, 2017 ]
You can program playbase to work with volume control of any infared remote. if your direct tv is infared (you point it at the tv to change volume) then it will work. [ Brett  Aug 30, 2017 ]
Thanks for your question. I would say so. If you TV has pedestal feet that are wide enough apart it could work there too. Here are the specs from the "Details" tab: Mounting Options: The Sonos PlayBase can rest under the pedestal stand or between the pedestal feet of your flat-panel TV. [ Kenny  Jul 22, 2017 ]  Staff
You can use the Playbase as a stand alone system through the optical cable. The volume can be adjusted with buttons on the unit, but I don't think you are able to access the Night Mode or Dialogue Enhancement without your phone being connected. That being said, you might be able to connect your phone to the unit with a "dummy" Wi-Fi from your router without needing internet. You probably need internet to use the TruPlay feature, though, since this goes through their algorithm to work. It's a great sounding and very functional speaker on its own, but it would be a shame to miss out on these cool features. [ Robert Adam  May 15, 2017 ]
Thanks for your question. The PLAYBASE supports TVs weighing up to 77 lbs. You can find this information on the product page under "Product Highlights". Hope this helps. [ Kenny  Apr 21, 2017 ]  Staff
Even though I use Xfinity for my cable provider I use the TiVo Bolt for my cable box. I can tell you that the TiVo remote works fantastic with the playbase. [ Anthony  Apr 18, 2017 ]
Yes, the Sonos software is excellent, will give you the option of "following" the television when the TV is powered on. [ KEITH L  Jan 15, 2018 ]
When you have a direct audio output cable from the TV (or cable box) to the Playbase, the answer is yes. It senses the TV audio and switches to that source. The cable has to be an optical cable, so check your TV first beforehand. [ Robert  Jan 15, 2018 ]
Yes the Playbase comes on automatically when the TV turns on and goes into Standby on its own after the TV is turned off. [ Daniel  Jan 15, 2018 ]
Yes, it turns on when the TV is turned on. [ Matthieu  Jan 15, 2018 ]
yes, it is seamless [ Kirk  Jan 15, 2018 ]
Thanks for your question. Yes it looks like it will. Your TV has 2 1/2 inches clearance on the stands. The PLAYBASE is 2 5/16 inches high so it is very close. Hope this helps. [ Kenny  Apr 04, 2017 ]  Staff
