Sonos PLAY:1 wireless streaming music speaker

A world of music you can fit almost anywhere

If you have a wireless home network and a smartphone, then you're ready to start streaming music in any room in your home. All you're missing is Sonos, the easiest way to create a network of wireless music players throughout your home. Now, it's more affordable than ever to get in on the fun. The compact PLAY:1 offers easy setup, clear sound, and simple placement or wall mounting in almost any spot you'd like to liven up with some tunes.

How much music can you access with the PLAY:1? How about pretty much any music available anywhere? Get Pandora® Internet radio, Spotify®, Apple Music™, Rhapsody®, SiriusXM, and thousands of free Internet radio stations. The compact Sonos PLAY:1 lets you enjoy music from the Internet as well as songs stored on your home computers or portable devices — without filling your room with audio gear. It's perfect for small rooms and cozy corners, and setup is as easy as pushing a button. You can even pair two PLAY:1 speakers and configure them for rich stereo sound.

Expand to any (or every) room

Place Sonos players like the PLAY:1, as well as the larger PLAY:3 and PLAY:5, in every room where you want to listen to music. You can set up the players to work on your existing Wi-Fi® network. Or, you can connect any Sonos speaker to your network router, and Sonos will create its own dedicated wireless network for even better performance. You can also use a BOOST to create this network if you can't place a speaker near your router.

Sonos controllers

The Sonos app gives you easy wireless control

You can use your iPhone®, iPod touch®, iPad®, or Android™ smartphone or tablet to control any and all Sonos players. A free download turns your smartphone and tablet into a full-fledged Sonos controller. Easily navigate and search through playlists and tracks stored on your computer, or select an Internet radio station. Create customized playlists on the fly for individual rooms or for playback over your entire Sonos system. You can also mute or adjust the volume of each of your players.

Trueplay speaker tuning for optimal sound

If you use your Sonos control app on an iPhone®, iPad®, or iPod touch®, great news. You can use your iOS® device to fine-tune the PLAY:1 with Sonos's Trueplay feature. It uses the mic built into your device to measure how the sound reflects off your walls and furnishings, and then it adjusts the speaker's settings for the best possible sound. Trueplay works with every PLAY:1, PLAY:3, and PLAY:5 speaker in your system. (Currently for iOS devices only.)

Spotify®, Pandora®, SiriusXM, and more at your fingertips

The Sonos system works seamlessly with a host of streaming music services, including Pandora, Spotify, Deezer, Rhapsody®, TIDAL and more. You also have access to thousands of Internet radio stations from around the world through TuneIn Radio, and terrestrial radio stations through iHeartRadio. If you subscribe to SiriusXM Internet Radio, you can tune into all your favorite programming on any Sonos player in your system.

Play music stored on your iPhone®, iPad®, or iPod touch®

Sonos gives you convenient wireless access to music and podcasts stored in the Music app of your iOS devices, for playback throughout your entire Sonos system. This function works on devices running iOS6 or later (see below for full list of compatible Apple devices). The system even lets you connect a combination of up to 16 PCs, Mac® computers, smartphones, tablets, and digital music storage devices from your home network simultaneously.

Queue up songs from your iPhone to play in the kitchen while you cook, while your spouse streams a podcast in the den from the family computer, and your children use their tablet to enjoy music from their kid-friendly Pandora station — all at the same time.

Expand your Sonos system

You can have up to 32 Sonos music players in your system, and each one can play an independent selection of individual tracks or playlists. Listen to jazz in the den while your spouse plays rock music in the kitchen, or pump a single playlist of songs throughout the entire house during a party.

Sounds great for it's size and the Sonos app works well. The Play:1 is a better value than the Play:3 and Play:5 (I have all three in my home). It would be nice it it had a line-in port.

Ross from Shepherdstown, WV on 12/13/2016

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I recently bought a 200 year old log home. Running wires for ... anything ... is right out. "Broadband Internet" is 6Mbs down / 440Kbs up ADSL. And the one thing my wife asked for was music everywhere. I looked around for months, and found ... nothing. Until I found a passing reference to Sonos in an article about building your own wireless speakers with Google ChromeCast Audio. The Google answer sounded like fun to build, but I had a woman to please, and she'd been waiting patiently. I couldn't be happier with the Sonos PLAY:1 I bought. I'm a low-grade audiophile, and I honestly don't feel the need for a stereo pair. The drivers are just that good. And the WiFi connectivity is perfect, even with my poor Internet service. One speaker is plenty for our largest space (21 x 36 ft), and I just bought a second for the kitchen. She listens to NPR over TuneIn, we both play all sorts of stuff from Prime music, and we've only scratched the surface so far. And we dance at home. A lot. :-)

Convenient, great sound and competitive $$

Justin from Sacramento, CA on 12/13/2016

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

So this review is a quick comparison of two Sonos PLAY:1s and my old system which consists of a pair of Bose 301s and a Velodyne VA-1210. First: there isn't much that beats the convenience of getting music going (using Apple Music through the SONOS app). It is so fast, being able to find a song/playlist going quickly is awesome. When my kids have dance parties, there is never a delay. Our previous setup was played through Apple Airplay. The Airplay setup was great, but the Sonos setup is even more convenient. Second: The sound quality is amazing considering that the PLAY:1s are a third of the size of the 301s and only have a 3.5" woofer (compared to the 301s 8" woofer). Bass is super punchy (but lacking on the low end... understandably) and the highs are crisp and clear. The sound got even better when I tuned the speakers using Trueplay. The bass was refined (and less harsh) and the highs were cleaned up. I even hid the speakers behind some candles (to make the wife happy) and the sound isn't restricted. Obviously, the PLAY:1s can't hit lows in comparison with the Velodyne (and the $700 SUB is quite an investment). But I heard the PLAY:5s in a large room and they make up for a lot of the lows. Third: While expensive, I feel that the PLAY:1s are worth it. When you figure the cost of a good receiver, sub and surround speakers, SONOS is pretty competitive. Fourth: Now that I'm in, I'm in. Gotta save up for a PLAYBAR and SUB for the home theater and a

Pros: Sound quality Ease of setup Trueplay Modular setup

Cons: Not portable Not suited for outdoors

Steve from Indiana on 12/13/2016

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

My favorite Sonos speaker, small and unobtrusive, but great sound. I have a Sonos Play 5 also, but now have two pairs of these and actually prefer the Play 1. To my ear these sound as good or better than the Play 3 for considerably less money. My wife likes the fact that they are easier to hide with furniture placement, women and cords?

Pros: Great sound, compact and least expensive of Sonos lineup.

Cons: None, as of this review.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought 4 of these speakers. I paired 2 with a soundbar and sub woofer, placed one in the Master bedroom and one in the kitchen. I am very pleased with their performance and ease of setup. The only downside was the kitchen and bedroom speakers would occasionally drop the signal and I had to buy and install a Sonos Bridge to create a separate dedicated Wi-Fi network to correct the problem. Nevertheless, I am extremely pleased with the Sonos products and will probably add 3 more speakers to the system in the near future.

Love The Sonos!

Bob from Sarasota, FL on 12/11/2016

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Excellent Value. Easy to setup as one or a pair of stereo speakers. Love the Sonos!

Pros: Space Saving, Easy to Setup, Nice Sound, Great looking- I got the Black ones.

Cons: None that I can think of for the money. If it was my only stereo speakers, I would have opted for the Play 3's for the more robust sound, but I am using these in a home office and they are plenty of sound for my needs.

Jon from Bridgeport, CT on 12/10/2016

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Well. I've had Bose systems for years and have always loved them...then I met sonos. Got the play1 for a small living room after researching options to have Pandora stream onto my Bose devices...and I'm happy. The play 1 is a great speaker, tight and for the most part solid bass, although I've had some distortion on lower ends. maybe its just the particular recordings, time will tell. But for the price this is a fun toy and highly recommended!

Pros: Wireless!

Cons: Some muddling on the bass

Great sound. Easy to control wirelessly.

Pros: Great sound and easy to use.

After years of hemming and hawing we finally pulled the trigger and purchased Sonos for the house. It's amazingly simple to setup and so easy to use. I love how well Sirius Radio works with it right in the app. My home is once again filled with music which makes everyone's mood better. The dog loves it too, seems to keep her calm during those times we have to leave house without her.

Love these things!!

Tony from San Antonio, TX on 12/8/2016

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

After all the great reviews my expectations were high coming into my first Sonos PLAY:1's, and I wasn't disappointed. These little speakers put out a heck of a punch with great quality sound and the Sono's app allows me to play one thing in one room and my wife to play another in a different room. Their app pulls in every music service I can think of and I can create custom lists from a combination of music sources like SiriusXM, Spotify, etc. Setup was a breeze and I have had no issues with music dropping out on my average wifi network. I WILL be buying more of these, hands down.

Pros: Easy Setup and great flexibility Fabulous Sound Play/Pause button and volume controls allow you to start and stop music from where you left off without needing to open the app. Great flexibility to play all speakers together, or play them separately with different music They look great and are built like tanks

Cons: No Aux input but not a big deal to me.

Brilliant speaker that packs punch

Dez from New York, NY on 12/8/2016

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Top-notch wireless streaming music speaker utilizing clean crisp digital audio over WiFi. The compact Play:1 packs punch for it's size and is higher-fidelity than I expected it to be. The curved metallic grill is attractive and the unit has some heft. It's well made. There's a tweeter and a mid-range speaker with a built-in power amp. The bass is very punchy, surprisingly. Simple to set up (tell the app you want to add a speaker, press the Volume Up & Play buttons when prompted, and you're good to go) and portable with it's WiFi ability, although it needs to be connect to a power source. You can also hard wire it via Ethernet. I wasn't crazy about "Trueplay", which allows you to balance and fine tune the speaker dependent on the room it's located it. I used the software EQ to set to taste. The buttons are intuitive with a Play/Pause button (double-tapping it skips tracks) and a Volume rocker as well as an activity light on top. Comes with a right angle power cord and flat Ethernet cable. There's also a mounting screw in the rear and non-skid rubber feet around the perimeter of the base. There are no wired inputs and no ability to stream from online. I like the ability to play my entire music library on my computer, network, devices or from the various Internet Stations that I listen to all from One iOS/Android app or from the Sonos Controller on my computer. I also like that you can mix & match various Sonos speaker or components as your needs grow. Recommended

Pros: Loud, crisp audio. Abundance of music sources from your local library or Internet music services or Internet Radio from one app. Grouping speakers as well as adding another speaker to create a stereo pair is a plus.

Cons: No Bluetooth, AirPlay or Power switch. Lacks wired audio input. No ability to stream from online.

Beautiful design, amazing sound

Don from Vero Beach, FL on 12/8/2016

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These are awesome speakers, consistent with the entire line of Sonos products. First and foremost the fidelity and range of the speakers is amazing. They are very easy to setup whether doing so as an individual speaker or as a pair in stereo. They also are a great compliment as the surround sound speakers to the Sonos sound bar and Sonos subwoofer. They also look great no matter where you place them and take up little space compared to the quality of sound they deliver. I highly recommend the entire Sonos line as I have done to many friends, all of whom love the products.

Pros: Quality of sound, beautiful design, solid construction.

Sounds excellent, but the software and user's guide are lacking--no volume equalization, no control over metadata, no ability to see folder view on mobile devices (a BIG negative given that it splits some albums in two for no obvious reason), no explanation of how to use a good interface like MediaMonkey to control Sonos, no explanation on how to pair more than one speaker. I purchased two Play 1s, one for my bedroom and the other for a dining room. I opened the box and set both up very easily. After set up I played various genres of music to get a scope of the sound. After about 30 or 45 minutes of playing music I got back onto Crutchfield's website and ordered a Sonos Play3. These Play1 speakers are great. They provide adequate sound and bass for all genres of music. I am more impressed with the Play1s than the Play3. So in the future I plan on adding more Play1 speakers to different rooms. Overall, I think these Play1 speakers are worth their price point. Good value.

Sonos Rocks Great Sound & So Easy to Use!!

Dean from South Lyon, MI on 11/9/2016

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

After having used the Bose SoundTouch systems I have converted to Sonos. The sound quality from this little speaker is fantastic and fills a room quite well. It's much punchier and cleaner through the mids and has enough bass to hold its own. One differentiator for me was the simplicity and ease of use of the Sonos app. Way better than SoundTouch and the biggest differentiator for me was support for Apple Music. All of my music is stored in iTunes Match and my kids have created numerous playlists in Apple Music. All of this is available online without me having to sync a local iTunes repository which I had to do with Bose. I can't recommend this product enough. I've since purchased the Play Bar and Subwoofer. When I added the sub it shook my house and I had to turn down the bass. Just ordered another Play 1 and will be adding the 5.1 option later today. Can't wait to listen!

Pros: Apple Music, simplicity, flexibility, sound, mids and bass

Cons: expensive but worth it

A Work of Art

Greg from Morristown, TN on 10/31/2016

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Before installing this Play:1 I had no experience with Sonos equipment or the Sonos software. Honestly, even after reading up on it I still did not really understand how the system worked. But that all changed and the experience was nothing but a joy. Equipment: Packaging This equipment was packaged like professional equipment is packaged, not a little bluetooth speaker you buy at a box store. First, when you open the box the first thing you see are the instructions which are simple and well written. I detest reading half-baked, poor grammar, indiscernibly illustrated directions that seem as if the manufacturer only included them because there was a requirement. Second, the product is well protected but is not secured in a fashion that makes you damage the product to get it open. One piece of cardboard and a nice cloth sleeve and you are holding the product in your hand. One more piece of cardboard and you have the power cord and accessories. Overall, packaging is well thought out, not an afterthought or a place that Sonos tried to save money. Equipment: Connection Plug the speaker into the wall and connect it to WiFi, (note here, I used the Sonos Boost which creates an independent WiFi network for the Sonos speakers. How using the WiFi router works is unknown.), download the app, start the app and follow the simple instructions to get started. In moments you are connected. Takes a little time to understand multiple speaker use but works well. Equi

Pros: Simple Quick Well documented Lots of options if you want/need them Great sound Easy whole home / barn audio

Cons: A little expensive (but you get what you pay for with this unit.) Not simple to integrate other equipment No native Bluetooth (though it is possible to add with Sonos Connect and a non-Sonos bluetooth adapter.)

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I heard amazing things from my brother in law about Sonos play 1's and the other components and I was a bit skeptical how they could replace my hard wired and three times the cost Polk audio system... boy was my bro right! These speakers are amazing and that word doesn't even describe it properly! The sheer fact that I have have whole home audio in every room is what truly makes the difference. I can't wait to continue adding play 1's so there is one in every room - even bathrooms! Please put the 1's on sale soon!!

Pros: Ease of use. Whole home audio. Wireless. iPhone app controls. Sheer sound!

Cons: No Bluetooth option if needed.

Wil from Lenoir City, TN on 9/12/2016

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The product was a 5 star product until Sonos released the 6.4 version of the controllers(apps). The hardware is superior and the software Used to be until the new release. The new software seriously impacted the intuitive and user-friendly queue-based paradigm in favor of a "play now" experience. It has made the use of a queue tedious at best and just about useless for most. Before you make a purchase, go to community portion of the Sonos website, register, and see what most are saying about the new software. It's a bit of a reach to give it 2; it's the hardware that does it.

Pros: Hardware

Cons: Software

Was looking for option for our newly renovated kitchen. Did not want to do in ceiling or wall speakers. Chose Sonos play 1 to be mounted on wall close to ceiling. Great choice for us. Added an outlet near the mount which is hidden by the speaker. Looks great and sounds great! I will now be adding more speakers throughout the house.

Pros: Good sound, works great for our needs.

Cons: App could use some improvements to make it easier to navigate and make play;its, but maybe its just me and my lack of user skills. Speakers a bit pricey for what they deliver.

These speakers are as good as everyone has said. I set two of them up to serve as stereo speakers in our kitchen. Setup was extremely easy, the sound is great for the size of speaker, and the app makes playing music painless.

Pros: Ease of use and great sound

Cons: You are largely locking in to the Sonos system - the options to integrate Sonos with existing equipment are not great.

Beth from Richmond, VA on 8/16/2016

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Amazing and the perfect solution to get quality sound unobtrusively. I have two of these set up as L-R stereo in a large open floor plan living/kitchen/dining area. The sound is phenomenal for the size. Set up was a breeze. It isn't my high end component system, but the sound is more than satisfying and easily fills the large area. Actually, it is quite close to the quality of my component system. I had both speakers set up and was streaming within 15 minutes tops. One of the advisors recommended these to me and I'm glad he did. An excellent and affordable choice.

Pros: Quality sound, easy setup, unobtrusive, streams a lot of sources and media, reasonable price, ability to set up as L and R stereo pair

Cons: None. OK, it isn't concert hall quality, but I don't live in a concert hall.

This is my third Sonos Play 1 speaker which I got for my birthday, at my request. I am delighted I can now listen to my playlist in the kitchen, porch and grilling area. I grill a lot and move from room to room. The speacker is excellent, full rich sound, not tinny or flat. I have a pair of hard wired speakers on the porch connected to a Denon receiver and CD player but prefer the Sonos.

Pros: Great sound, can use my I-Phone playlists, Pandora or other radio stations. Very versatile. Volume control for each room.

Outstanding little espeaker with broad range of response. But the best thing about Sonos is the app and then network. No problems. Pros: Reliability. Ease of use.

Play 1 has excellent sound quality and is easy to set up. My system consists of a Sonos Connect (so I can play CDs and other items through my home stereo receiver into the Sonos system and similarly play Sonos items through my stereo speakers), Play1 and Play 3 speakers. Sonos and Crutchfield both supply excellent technical support with knowledgeable representatives. The system can be controlled from my pc, smartphone(s) and Ipads --- really easy to use once you understand the basics.

Pros: Excellent Sound quality, Broad access to internet radio stations, good technical support

Cons: Very pricey speakers and other system components.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The Play 1 speaker gives a very nice sound for a small speaker. It is easy to use once it is set up. Setting it up was easy except for getting iTunes to work. I plan to buy a second unit.

Pros: Easy to set up for internet streaming services such as Pandora and Amazon Nice sound

Cons: Setting up iTunes not particularly easy; it set my computer so that it never sleeps. Doesn't have bluetooth option or mp3 input so that you could listen to sound over speakers while watching a show on your mobile device. Spotify (free) doesn't work with Sonos. You must be a paying member. That's probably fair.

John R. from Spotsylvania, VA on 6/2/2016

I just dumped my clunky 30-year-old stereo gear, and I was seeking high-quality, user-friendly replacement equipment. Friends recommended Sonos highly, so I bought the Sound 1 and Sonos boost to give it a try and learn the system before investing more extensively. I am delighted. The App downloaded easily to both my PC and IPhone, and I could use it readily relying on intuition. For a speaker its size, output of the Sonos 1 is incredible. I anticipated the advangages of wireless with no amp, but it is even better than I expected. I will be getting more Sonos equipment.

Pros: It is a compact, easily operated, simple system offering great flexibility and tremendous sound.

I bought these to replace a Bowers & Wilkins A5 AirPlay speaker for my living room. For the price per pair, the Play:1 offers much better sound (set as a stereo pair) for less money. What's more, the Sonos network is far more stable than my AirPlay connection to the A5 ever was. It starts streaming as soon as I hit the play button. Setup and tuning were simple and quick, though it did take a while to map my iTunes music library on the desktop software.

Pros: Good value, great sound, easy setup

Beautiful Sound, Convenient Placement, Easy Set-up

Chris from Punta Gorda, FL on 5/8/2016

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I first heard a Sonos Play 1 at my daughter's home...wondered where the great music was coming from. She showed me her Sonos Play 1 speaker and her iPhone, explaining that she could control all aspects of the speaker from her phone or from her iPad. Such great sound was coming from that little speaker perched on the top of a bookcase; it would have strained credibility had I not seen and heard it for myself. Since I almost constantly listen to music from my iPhone, I was excited about the proposition of hearing such good sound quality with a small, easy-to-install speaker. I bought a Sonos as soon as I got home and had it set up within 10 minutes--including reading directions. Even though the physical setting is different in my home than it was in my daughter's, the speaker sounds just as good. For a person who needs to be surrounded with music, the Sonos Play1 seems almost too good to be true.

Pros: *Rich sound *Easy set-up *Will fit in many spots in a home because it is amazingly small for such great sound

Cons: I hate to turn it off so that my husband can watch television...compromise, compromise, compromise...

Great Speaker, Terrible Interface

Juliet from Studio City, CA on 5/7/2016

I am truly floored by the high ratings this unit gets. I cannot imagine I'm the only person to dislike this unit. I've been using my Sonos Play for about a year now. While the sound is rich and full, I am giving up on it because of its unfriendly, unintuitive interface. I listen to a lot of podcasts. First, you must play all files through the proprietary Sonos app, which only recognizes files that are downloaded to your device, no streaming content. It does not speak to your other apps, such as iTunes, etc, so I am constantly frustrated with the unit. As a podcast updates over the course of its life, the Sonos unit perceives the podcast as a totally different entity or "artist" with each update. So, you will have several of the same icons that will each have different files within. Unlike iTunes, there is no access to the music/podcast from your phone while it is in locked mode. You must unlock your phone, and go to the app to pause, stop, fast-forward or rewind. There is also no option to ff or rewind by 15 second intervals, so if you miss something and want to go back doing so is very sloppy. On some files, the app does not recognize the progression of the play at all, so there is no going back or forward at all. Also, in addition to my iPhone 6+, which is what I usually use, I have an old iPad. The old device cannot interact with the Sonos at all. That's not a big deal, but it just adds to the list of annoying features of the unit. I am done!

Pros: Sounds great. Nice looking unit.

Cons: Proprietary interface is terrible.

Great speakers

Native Son from Charlottesville, VA on 4/23/2016

My previous sound system died. I was used to the ease of controlling the system from a tablet so after doing some research online, I settled on the Sonos Play series speaker. However, I did not know which model, the 1, the 3, or the 5, would best work for me. I visited the Crutchfield retail store in Charlottesville where I was helped by the knowledgeable and very helpful, Mark. After I explained my room dimensions he recommended that I purchase two Play 1's which would provide stereo separation in my 20x20 room. I purchased the two Play 1's at Crutchfield and took them home where the ease of setup was noteworthy. I am using an Ipad Mini to control the speakers with the Sonos app. Not only is the sound amazing but the interface on the app is amazingly easy to use. I have all of my Pandora stations plus Radio Paradise as well as my favorite radio stations on the app. I highly recommend the speakers as the sound quality is off the charts. And, Crutchfield's prices are competitive with Amazon so wouldn't you rather support a small, locally-owned company than the behemoth Amazon? The service and customer support at Crutchfield at without peer.

Pros: 1. Ease of setup 2. Versatility of music and radio offerings through the Sonos app 3. The sound quality is amazing.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Speakers sound great for their size. Was able to get operational in a commercial setting by disabling the WIFI in the speaker so it did not broadcast as it would create issues in our facility with the existing WIFI running on 2.4 Ghz. Each speaker is plugged into Ethernet and works like a charm. Now the speakers don't compete with other WIFI uses in the building and to control the speakers requires one to be plugged into our network, which is pretty rare as most use phones w/in our facility.

Pros: Great sounding, amount of online music sources, speaker mount in back, style

Cons: Would be nice if from PC could talk over the speakers for announcements. Not a con so much as a great feature.

Great little speaker

Linh from Maryland on 1/5/2016

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a very nice wireless speaker option. It fits a niche use for us in that we want compact and least amount of wires. A Chromecast Audio would have been great... if there were single speaker options like this (LG's current H3 is not worth it IMO given it's close to the same price). It sounds pretty good, as we live in a townhouse so just wanted something easy to use as well. Software could be more friendly IMO. I had 0 problems, but find their Android App isn't always obvious. Queue list has no indication of how to get out of it. Yes, you'd try back eventually, but there's no indication you're in a subpage of some sort (I have this same issue with Play Music actually). My biggest issue is cost for sound. It's on the a little too high for what you get. Part of this is the whole house experience, and that is pretty damn nice (even for just 2 speakers). But I feel that tide is about to change. Frankly, if there was a good Chromecast Audio solution, I'd go there. But there wasn't. And I didn't want to wait. If you can deal with larger bookshelf speakers and some extra wires, I would go there in a heartbeat now. But Sonos still has the multi room experience down pretty good. If that's a big factor now, this is the way to go.

Pros: Nice multi room setup. Sounded better than expected. compact and clean

Cons: Expensive, despite sounding better than expected. No true universal Google Cast option (it only works on Android, not iOS, and I don't think it's actually Google Cast)

I already own two Play 1's and 2 Sonos Connects. I bought this latest one as a gift for my daughter. She loves it! It was easy for her to get set up and playing her favorite radio station.

Pros: Compact, easy setup, great sound from small speaker

Cons:

A good place to start

Melanie from Virginia on 12/30/2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Having fallen in love with my Sonos Connect, I purchased the Sonos Play for my mother as a Christmas gift. She listens to music while in her sewing room, and isn't as preoccupied with sound quality as I am. Play 1 is a small speaker that is surprisingly powerful and as easy to set up as other Sonos devices. It lacks a subwoofer, which means that fans of an emphatic low end (or those accustomed to a stereo system with a powered subwoofer) should start with one of the more expensive Play speakers.

Pros: Ease of set up Compact but powerful A comparatively inexpensive starting point for those new to networked speakers

Cons: Weak bass

Great sound, worth the money

This is a situation of you really have to hear it to believe it. Lucky for me both of my siblings are Sonos loyalist, so I've had the opportunity to experience a full house system as well as a situational system (2 rooms). I purchased the Play 1 for my office. I appreciate the flexibility of this wireless product and feel the quality is exceptional.

Pros: Quality sound. Easy set-up and placement.

Cons:

Sonos system is awesome!

I love my Sonos! Super easy to set up and operate, fab sound, great to be able to play from my iPhone or daughter's, love playing from my iTunes, Pandora, radio. Only problem: what do I do with all of these old CDs taking up spans on my shelves?

Pros: Ease of use, great sound

Cons: Addictive- I want one for every room!

Very easy to get hooked up and sound is amazing especially for such a small unit. Thoroughly impressed. Had hoped to have both Sonos sound and my computer speakers but at least at this point, Sonos takes over but that's OK! Might need to buy a second unit for the computer room.

Pros: Size, shape

Cons:

Small speaker puts on surprisingly good sound for its size. It's small and fits nicely on our bathroom counter. Sonos is great. We got the white one, looks great in our bathroom with white countertops.

Pros: 1) Surprisingly good sound for its size. 2) Easy to find a good spot for it since its smaller compared to its more expensive sisters. 3) The cheapest of the Sonos speakers.

Cons: 1) Not cheap but well worth it.

Great, but I wish it didn't rely on the app

David from Kentucky on 8/31/2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great sound! I thought I had a good idea of how Sonos worked before I bought the two PLAY:1s we have at our house. We love that we can put them in different rooms, play different things on each one, and adjust it all through our phones. The actual Sonos app is relatively easy to use - it's intuitive, and once you get everything set up, it works great. Having to reply on the app, however, is a negative. I wish that it would just connect to my phone and play whatever I select. (This would mean that I couldn't listen to music and take a phone call at the same time, but I'm willing to sacrifice that) If it operated more like a regular bluetooth/wifi speaker, I wouldn't have to reset all of my music preferences and settings. Two quick examples - you can use Spotify through your Sonos, but because it connects to Spotify as it's own device, none of your personalization is available in the Sonos app. That means none of your Spotify playlists or created radio stations. (In fact the "start a station based on that song" feature isn't available in Sonos) So you have to recreate everything you already have. Sonos has it's own level of music security built into its app so you can't play pirated material (I'm a huge fan of that), BUT it won't trust your other devices - many of the albums that I have purchased hard copies of and then downloaded to my device will not play through Sonos. Again ,both of these issues would be solved if it didn't have such a "fancy" app and operating system.

Pros: Fantastic sound Multiple sources of sound in different locations Ability to play different things in different rooms Easy and intuitive control

Cons: Sonos app restricts available content & features

Great speaker!

Sonos Play 1

DerickR from Northern NJ on 8/10/2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

First Sonos speaker was looking for the flexibility of a wireless speaker and the Play one has exceeded my expectations. Good quality sound form such a small speaker. Installed one speaker, super easy the app walks you right through installation, to listen to the sound quality and play with location. About a week later installed second speaker, again super easy app walked me right through installation. I was able to adjust the volumes of each speaker through the app and now have them grouped together. The ease of installation and sound quality has me seriously thinking about a play bar and sub.

Pros: Ease of installation, Great app, Good sound Quality Speaker blend easily into decor.

Cons: none

Sonos play 1

April from Pennsylvania on 8/8/2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I am very happy with the Sonos Play 1. I have been wanting to listen to my music everywhere I go. That's what I love about it. It goes where I go! Great sound, nice in appearance, good range(hearing it from a distance) makes this a great choice for me! I will be adding more eventually so I don't have to unplug and move it every time.

Pros: Great appearance, great sound, can move it anywhere where there is a plug.

Cons: I wish, I wish we didn't need the plug; and I wish I wish Sonos had a weather proof outdoor speaker! Someday soon I hope ! :)

Sounds great and love the portability!

Jason B from Tennessee on 7/18/2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I am impressed with the sound that these speakers produce solo. They sound even better when you pair them up and put them into stereo mode. I wanted some outdoor tunes and these speakers are perfect for that! I only wish there was an outdoor weather-resistent model - come on Sonos! Being tethered to the wall by a power cord is a drag - I wish there was a rechargeable/battery option. The Sonos controller app is pretty robust but it could be improved. I do like the speakers and would definitely recommend them.

Pros: Sound; Multiple modes (solo, groups, stereo); Portability; Physical play/stop and volume buttons; Easy setup

Cons: Power cord (rechargeable option would be sweet!); Lack of Amazon Prime Music integration (only regular Amazon Music)

Solid Performance

The Play 1 is a great addition to my Playbar. Its has a nice well built heft and it blends in nicely with the decor. It certainly has plenty of output and I prefer 2 Play 1's to one Play 5. Very easy to setup!

Pros: setup, Integration and design

Cons: I wish there was one other input option such as 3.5mm or Bluetooth

Great system and product

Chris from Atlanta on 7/5/2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Really easy to setup and has good sound. I'm not a super high end audiophile so I can't say if these sound comparable to high end speakers, but to me as a general listener they sound great. I have a couple in my living room, a couple on my deck, and one in my bedroom.

Pros: Easy to setup, sound good

Cons: App to control them isn't the best. While grouping speakers is easy, if you want to add a speaker to a group after you already started listening you have to stop the current song playing and then restart the music.

A pair of Play:1's

Dtownboys from Pennsylvania on 5/18/2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I added two Play:1's to my sound bar and sub to create surround sound. It sounds fabulous. I really like it. I was concerned that the Play:1 might not be pwerful enough but these little guys are serious speakers. I have taken them out on my back deck and used the pair of Play:1's as my only speakers and they sound great.

Pros: Lots of sound. Good powerful speakers.

Cons: It's a bit of a pain to divorce them from my surround sound set-up and move them outside. Then I have to reconfigure which can be done but it takes a few minutes and is just harder than it needs to be.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I already had the PlayBar, PlaySub and two Play 3's. I had the Bar and Sub set up as a 2.1 sound system for my TV however, I knew I needed to go for the full 5.1 solution and the Play 3's were being used in other rooms..so, I wanted the Play 1's to complete the configuration. They did the job and then some, from an outstanding surround sound for video, using the Sonos app I can switch to beautiful sound with Pandora or other apps. The Play 1"s were icing on the Sonos sound cake at our home. I am pleased with the system in every conceivable way...oh and by the way, Crutchfield is a great place to buy Sonos products very fast delivery, no sales tax and technical assistance every step of the way.

Pros: See review

Great for small room

Robb from California on 5/17/2015

Replaced a Sony radio with crappy reception and sound in our master bathroom with Sonos 1. The difference was absolutely staggering! I know have Sonos in 5 rooms on on 2 decks. I never touch my expensive home media system now. I even pull in African music from a station in Marseilles France, and a Gaelic program from Ireland readily switching between them and my several local NPR stations and the various BBC stations..

Pros: Central as well as local control.

Cons: You can't fault the Sonos system. They aren't cheap as other reviewers point out - but quality per $ beats everything out there.

Can only use Sonos App to Play Audio

My Bad from California on 5/14/2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Sound was Awesome! Wish I could have kept it... but had to return because I didn't do my homework. Here's Cliffs Notes for those like me: --Does not work like a traditional speaker, so it will not play audio from online or other non-sonos app compatible sources. --You can get the functionality above using "Line In" if you buy a Play 5 or add a Sonos Connect. --Rare, but you may have trouble with firewall/port permissions you have set. So really mostly my fault for not doing more research.

Pros: Sound

Cons: Limited audio sources if you are not planning on buying a Sonos Connect or Play 5 or find another way around the "Line In" issue.

Good product if your expectations aren't unreasonably high

RickW from Louisiana on 4/5/2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This speaker is easy to connect, unobtrusive, and sounds pretty good as long as it's close to you. For example, if you position it on your desk or nightstand, you should be pretty satisfied with its sound. If you put it in a large room and aren't close to it, however, its sound will disappoint. While I might be belaboring the obvious, I believe it's still worth noting. The separation between bass and treble is pretty impressive.

Pros: Small footprint Easy setup Good separation

Cons: For "intimate" listening
