From Sonos: Trueplay
The Sonos PLAY:5 can tune itself for the clearest possible sound in your specific room.
Sonos lets you tap into music from your personal collection and from the Internet, anywhere in your house. The all-new Sonos PLAY:5 makes it easy to get started or add an additional room — it's a self-contained music system with built-in speakers.
Sonos redesigned the PLAY:5 to make it an even better speaker for big rooms. The all-new PLAY:5 is ideal for spaces with vaulted ceilings, open kitchen/family room combinations, and other large rooms. Sonos gave it six built-in synchronized drivers to deliver rich, vibrant sound.
A convenient new touch feature allows you to effortlessly skip songs and adjust volume with just a touch of your hand. You'll get top-notch, room-filling sound from a player that easily fits on a counter in the kitchen or an end table in the living room.
Place Sonos music players like the PLAY:5 in every room where you want to listen to music. The players connect to your home network — either via Wi-Fi® or by connecting one player to your router via Ethernet to create a dedicated Sonos network. This network, known for its extensive range and superior performance, gives you house-wide access to tunes stored on your PC along with a wealth of Internet audio choices. (For the best wireless performance, we recommend adding the Sonos BOOST.)
You can use your iPhone®, iPod touch®, iPad®, or Android™ smartphone or tablet to control any and all Sonos players. A free download turns your smartphone and tablet into a full-fledged Sonos controller. Easily navigate and search through playlists and tracks stored on your computer, or select an Internet radio station. Create customized playlists on the fly for individual rooms or for playback over your entire Sonos system. You can also mute or adjust the volume of each of your players.
If you use your Sonos control app on an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, great news. You can use your iOS® device to fine-tune the PLAY:5 with Sonos's Trueplay feature. It uses the mic built into your device to measure how the sound reflects off your walls and furnishings, and then it adjusts the speaker's settings for the best possible sound. Trueplay works with every PLAY:1, PLAY:3, and PLAY:5 speaker in your system. (Currently for iOS devices only.)
The Sonos system works seamlessly with a host of streaming music services, including Pandora®, Spotify, Apple Music, Rhapsody®, TIDAL and more. You also have access to thousands of Internet radio stations from around the world through TuneIn Radio, and terrestrial radio stations through iHeartRadio. If you subscribe to SiriusXM Internet Radio, you can tune into all your favorite programming on any Sonos player in your system.
Sonos has introduced a new speaker that has Alexa voice control built right in — the Sonos One. It lets you select songs from compatible music services using nothing but your voice. You can also control your Alexa-compatible smart home devices with it.
But what if you already have Sonos speakers around your home, like the PLAY:5? You can get those same cool voice control features by adding an Alexa-compatible voice control assistant and pairing it with your existing Sonos system via the Alexa mobile app. Alexa will "see" all the rooms that you have set up in your Sonos system, and you can control music playback in all of them, simply by talking to your Alexa device.
As of November 2017, the music services you can control with Alexa are as follows:
Sonos gives you convenient wireless access to music and podcasts stored in the Music app of your iOS devices, for playback throughout your entire Sonos system. This function works on devices running iOS6 or later (see below for full list of compatible Apple devices). The system even lets you connect a combination of up to 16 PCs, Mac® computers, smartphones, tablets, and digital music storage devices from your home network simultaneously.
Queue up songs from your iPhone to play in the kitchen while you cook, while your spouse streams a podcast in the den from the family computer, and your children use their tablet to enjoy music from their kid-friendly Pandora station — all at the same time.
You can have up to 32 Sonos music players in your system, and each one can play an independent selection of individual tracks or playlists. Listen to jazz in the den while your spouse plays rock music in the kitchen, or pump a single playlist of songs throughout the entire house during a party.

I guess you could describe me as an audiophile. My current system cost me about 25 KBUCKS and includes Audio Research pre-amp and amp, Mirage speakers (8 speakers in each tower), an 18 inch subwoofer, etc., etc. Two things made me ready for a change: 1) I am ready to simplify and unclutter and 2) My ears ain't what they used to be. Through lots of research and recommendations by the audio store that sold me my current setup some years ago, I landed on Sonos. I am awaiting a 5.1 home theatre setup, but could not resist buying a Sonos 5 while waiting. It came a couple of hours ago, and I am enjoying the heck out of it. Quick, intuitive setup, great sound and wireless! I love it. Understand that my listening area is a challenge. A voluminous room with 30 foot wooden ceilings. This beauty fills up the room with wonderful sound. As I type this, I am sitting in my home office which is a considerable distance from the speaker and it is clear and concise even through the walls and distance (of course I will now have to get a Play or Play one for in here!). I was amazed at the bass response. I had to immediately play Olympic fanfare which is a knockout piece on my reference setup. Wonderful! With singing, the voices are clear and the highs are crisp and clean. Unfortunately, I can see another one of these in my immediate future to setup a stereo system. I can't wait to see how it sounds when the subwoofer arrives with the 5.1 system. Sonos, you guys r
Pros: Great audio, easy hookup, wireless, compact, controllable with apps - you know the Sonos drill!
Just an amazing piece of hardware. Links with our Echo so we can access the entire library throughout the house from any device (including phones and tablets) without a hiccup. Excellent sound but that's just the price of admission these days. The cohesiveness of the technology is what you are buying. No more extensive installs drilling holes in your ceiling to get that immersive sound throughout the home. Simply incredible!
Pros: Incredible technology for your home audio
Excellent Does every thing the Crutchfielh said it would
The main floor of our home does not lend itself to wired speakers so I thought I would give the Sonos PLAY:5 a try - in our kitchen. It worked great and considering the room, sounded great, too. I was so impressed, that I bought a second one for our bedroom. We will likely buy more soon to fill the entire first floor with good and very convenient sound!
Pros: Excellent sound for a wireless speaker. Very easy to setup and use. App works well and makes a variety of streaming services very accessible.
Cons: A little expensive - but worth it.
Super easy setup. Used in conjunction with a wired system in my living room. Allowed me to easily control satellite radio from my phone and bring sound into the entire house.
Pros: Easy setup, good sound wuality
I already owned a Gen 1 Sonos Play:5 and the Gen 2 dominated. Very Highly Recommended.
Set this up as a pair for surround sound. We have an open floor plan with cathedral ceiling. Fabulous sound. Went from the tv speaker to these and what an improvement. These speakers are not too much for our family room!
Pros: Very easy setup.
Easy set up to existing Sonos Connect system. Very crisp highs and surprising good bass for a single speaker that size. Perfect addition for a sound field we wanted to create in dining room. Speaker sits on top of china cabinet and fills the room (high ceilings) with great sound.
Pros: Easy set-up. Excellent sound for a single speaker.
Cons: Price......but the sting wears off once you hear it.
Clean and crisp, I didn't expect anything less. Not the biggest fan of the price. Only used it for a couple weeks but it adds a fullness to my four paired Play 1's
It's a great speaker that produces a clear, crisp sound. It produces a high level of audio excellency.
Cons: I don't think there are any cons with the Play 5.
So far so good. Installed two of these in a client's home. They are very happy with them. The only thing I am not fond of is that you must have a Spotify premium account for it to operate with your Sonos platform. With that said. the ease of operation is fantastic.
Pros: Software operation is fantastic.
Cons: Spotify will only work with a premium account.
Great sound, looks great, streaming is fabulous.
Pros: size, capabilities, appearance
Cons: using wireless slows internet
Great speakers and easy to set up. I have 4 Sonos 5's through out the house and could not be happier. The customer support is fantastic.
Pros: Great sound. They bring my old vinyl back to life!
We already had a number of Play:1s, sub, playbar, etc. throughout the house. We added the Play:5 for outdoor listening and the sound quality is excellent for a wide open space.
Love the sound quality and the build quality...best sonos speaker ever made. Only thing is there no way to stream YouTube or movie sounds from your device. You are forced to use the Sonos app/system.
This was an great purchase....from the ease of ordering, the speedy delivery, the quality in of product and packaging, right down to the personal note from the owner of the company to thank me for my business! I was so impressed with the whole experience that I ordered another Play:5 for a gift! Crutchfield knows how to value their customers!
Pros: Top quality sound Compact Easy Setup Transportable
Easy set up- worked right out of the box. Excellent full sound. Easy to set up as stereo pair.
Effective Website. Ease of ordering was great. Shipping was exactly as promised. Packaging was very professional. I ordered two speakers. They were easy to set up with the App. I'm trying to fill a fairly large family room and they seemed a little too bright to me so I ordered a sub to go with it. That made all the difference. The sub is clear and not muddy. Very well matched to the speakers. I love the system.

Cons: The fives alone may not be enough for you if you have a larger room. Otherwise no negatives.
Great sound from a single speaker and no lag b/w rooms/speakers. Seamless setup and easy to integrate with my music library (iTunes). Will be adding more to other rooms! Would probably sound really nice as a pair with a sub.
Very fast service, and a follow up call to make sure I was satisfied.
Sounds great and couldn't be easier to set up!
Great speaker. Started out with one 5, will be ordering a second soon to pair with it. The sound is great for a wifi speaker. Plenty of bass. No need for a sub unless you want to shake the walls. Easy setup, nice app. A bit pricy and if you plan to get a stand, the flexson stands are well built, but really overpriced. Overall excellent speaker as a single unit, but can't wait to pair it up.
These play 5's are great. We spent a lot of money on a built in home system years ago. These speakers are cheaper and sound great in the rooms we didn't have a existing system in. Super easy set up and they give you the option of moving them around. The TRUEPLAY seems to make a difference.
Pros: great sound, easy set up, easy control on iPhone, minimalist style, blends in well.
Cons: a bit spendy
Excellent sound and functionality. With a pair of 5s and an A/B switcher, I am able to use the two LINE IN ports to connect a turntable, an Echo Dot and an Airport Express. This pretty much lets me get at all of my music, as well as streaming content. The clarity and depth, especially when playing records, is amazing. Sonos can get the elusive 5th star with improvements to app/software. For example, I cannot use the line in functions when the 5s are paired with the Playable for surround sound. Each time you want to switch from surround to stereo using line in, you have to manually pair/unpair the 5s. There should be an option to switch back and forth in the app. Not a deal breaker, but a fix on this and integration of Alexa/digital assistants would make it 5 star for me.
The Play:5 Speakers were good straight out of the box, I recommend buying two for an average size room. They were easy to set up with my iphone about what I expected. I did end up adding a Subwoofer to add some bass and it did give me the sound I was looking for. All in all not a bad system and I would recommend it.
Pros: Good Sound Easy Set-up Looks
Amazing speaker! I added this to my other Play 5 for a stereo system that is hard to match. Because the deep bass is very effective, there is no need for a sub-woofer. If you are looking to scale down your audio equipment by eliminating a receiver, Sonos Play 5 speakers won't disappoint.
Pros: Best sounding speakers for the money. Easy setup Great iPhone interface. Cross fade capability
I was given a Play 5 as a gift and decided to get a second for stereo separation. I also purchased the Boost module. I don't know if I really needed it but decided a dedicated wi-fi channel can't be bad. Once I was able to pair the speakers, wow! I couldn't believe how good they sound. I subscribed to a high-resolution streaming service and that really made them shine!. Crutchfield shipped my items quickly and they were well packaged. Very happy with the purchase.
Pros: Awesome sound quality.
Cons: Kinda pricey.
I use this product in our boaters lounges and it does a great job filling the space with quality FULL sound. They are easy to set up, less than 5 minutes and they are playing music. We use one per loung for background music and rarely turn them up above 35%.
Sales person was very helpful, I love these speakers i had a Bose system that these speakers replaced and the SONOS are outstanding. Thank you guys for helping me make the right choice. Wayne
Pricey, but worth it. Easy to set-up, simple to operate and most importantly, the sound quality is superb.
Pros: Quality, great sound, ease of set-up.
Gone are the days of cluttered wires and multiple components, we live in a wireless era dominated by mobile devices. Years ago I would have argued that I would never part with my at the time main music system which consisted of NAD components and Klipsch towers. But as home design and the way I listened to music on a daily basis slowly changed, I found myself less interested in the need for such space wasting equipment. I spent many months researching the options between self powered studio monitors to similar size Bluetooth options, but Sonos always seemed to push itself to the top. The Sonos line isn't just another Bluetooth speakers in the crowded segment, it's a network audio device. It's sound quality and features reflect that. Out of the box placed on a centralized self In my living room it was a little on the bass heavy side, while impressively strong and clean bass it dominated the unit. Playing around with the room tuning features and EQ smoothed that out. But it also could have been a placement issue. Sonos overall from their elegant unboxing experience to the outstanding sound gets my recommendation.
Pros: Impressive sound quality for the size, ease of use. Blends with modern decor. Not just another Bluetooth speaker
Cons: Power cord while a completely acceptable length could have been a little longer.
Amazing sound from a single speaker, fills the room! Bluetooth control from IPhone works great.
Everything you've read about ease of use is true. Setting it up I kept thinking, shame on every other digital product. Operationally, the app is first rate, playing tracks without any latency, managing the output and queue from iphones, android phones, laptops, and a desktop, and handing off control seamlessly even at modest signal strength. It easily acquires track/folder info from libraries on different devices (though combining them all on a single list that displays songs that are unavailable when a source is off), and the FM radio station access/performance is great. When there is a problem with setup or operation, the app provides wonderfully clear direction. Overall, the sound is quite good, if a little reedy in the treble especially at lower volumes, with good clarity among tracks and good adjustability on the equalizer, e.g. to bring up the bass that is somewhat muted by default. I am using a single unit and find the sound separation adequate but not what you'd get with BMR drivers. Both quality and separation improve at higher volumes. In sum, despite the second generation upgrade in sound, audiophiles will find some other single speakers that tickle their ears better. But none that combine frustration-elimination with good sound better. Worth mentioning that Crutchfield is a real pleasure to work with: rapidly accessible, knowledgeable, live staff; efficient transactions; fast shipping. Old school customer experience in the best sense.
Love the SONOS family! Former bluesound fan, SONOS' ease of use (and pandora) won me over. It's my new standard. Have (1) Connect, (4) Connect:AMP, This PLAY:5, and just picked up a SONOS Sub to go with it, can't wait to get the sub set-up! Setup of course is ridiculously easy as well.
Pros: Great sound - may have to order another for the kids room!
Cons: It's costly (but worth it)
The Sonos 5 sounds great. I am not an audiophile, but the whole family enjoys the sound of whatever we are playing: rock, jazz, bad 80s music. However, where the Sonos really shines for us is the app. It makes it easy to bring together all of our music: my Pandora account, my wife's Spotify account, music from all four of our computers. And anyone can grab control of it when needed. So, if I turn on music with my phone and leave the house, my son can use his iPod to switch to something he wants to hear. And the app works well across Apple and Android products.
Great sounding speaking. Deeper bass and a richer sound than the Gen 1 it replaced. Highly recommend.
Pros: Deeper bass, richer sound, projects sound very well
Cons: Bass can sound boomy. Had to lower bass in Settings (Android user so no TruePlay - not sure if this would help)
I first tried Play-Fi and all I can say is there is no comparison to Sonos. These speakers work great and the app to control them is nearly flawless. They aren't cheap, but I guess you get what you pay for. Pair two of these with a Sonos Subwoofer and you've got a very powerful, wireless system. I converted my entire house to Sonos and the only downside I can think of is my credit card balance. ;) I really don't think you can go wrong with Sonos - and you can have fun adding to the system over time.
Pros: Great sound, great app, multi-room music works flawlessly (with a Sonos Boost installed).
Cons: Expensive, not many stands available for these that are specifically designed for them.
Excellent speakers should have bought them earlier. Sound is impressive and voice is very clear.
Amazing crisp & clean sound! I want to buy another one for my other room
The Cructchfield got it to me promptly and accurately. Couldn't be happier! Love the Play5!
Pros: Great sound Easy set up Rich bass for a small speaker
Cons: Phone app is a bit confusing at first when learning to control multiple Sonos devices at once.
I was somewhat reluctant to try out Sonos as I was pretty set on a Bowers and Wilkins stereo. I'm so glad I tried out Sonos. This far exceeds my expectations. Great equipment, easy set up and great sound at a fraction of my original estimate. Btw, my favorite feature is the alarm clock. Who knew?
Pros: Wireless, Easy set up, great sound, bass, music services supported (Tidal, Spotify, etc)
This product is fantastic. I bought a pair for true stereo sound and I have been extremely impressed. Set-up could not have been easier. I play music from my iPhone or iMac desktop and all you need to do is download the Sonos app and follow very simple instructions. I had planned to buy a single wireless unit but the Crutchfield rep recommended this combination and I could not be happier.
I left this star rating as the speakers are limited to pretty much music only. This is not an air play device and plays through a SONOS app that you download to your phone/pad. The only way to play anything through the speakers is through approved service providers that are in the SONOS app. EG Apple music, Amazon music and loads of others. However, and heres the rub, if you use a player that is not in the list then SONOS is no use to you. I mainly listen to podcasts on a third party podcast app that in my opinion is a great podcast app (podcruncher) but podcruncher will not connect to SONOS. So my primary purpose for the speaker is immediately deleted. Crutchfield was great as usual and agreed to take it back. It does seem like a great speaker and kicks out music just fine, but if what you want is other than music you may be in trouble. Make sure you review the full list of apps that SONOS works with before you buy it.
Pros: Takes seconds to set up and is a good speaker
Cons: Doesn't work with third party podcast apps.
I love the convenience of controlling a house-wide sound system from my phone. Sonos speakers provide full resonant sound! Highly recommend them.
It is very easy to set up and sounds great.
Pros: easy to set up
Cons: availability of speaker stands
Great product. Integrates well with our Apple ecosystem and our Internet radio services.
Easy to set up. I bought this after hearing the announcement that Sonos and Amazon Alexa will be integrated in 2017. So until that happens I am wary of giving a 5 star review. However so far sound quality is great, set up was easy and the app interface was OK.
Pros: Good sound quality for a single speaker Very easy set up
Cons: App interface is not perfect yet. Its good but not as good as using the music providers own interfaces
Product amazingly straightforward to set up. Only challenge has been to get the controller app onto an old IPhone - still not accomplished because of a glitch with Apple's app store security. Speaker performs well in the mono mode with very good audio sensitivity - possible that the bass ranges could be better. But, for its size it is a first rate speaker. Control via IPhone will take some getting used to as I have so far avoided getting wedded to my smart phone. Internet streaming is almost always interruption free. Brief interruptions only occurred during one short period during the past 10 days of use. Did need to install a WiFi extender because of our physical set-up. We are at the fringe of FM reception so this is a major improvement for us.
I can't believe it took me this long to make this purchase. It was so easy to hook up and does everything I need it to do. I judge I product too by how they package it and Sonos is over the top. I now need to start adding to the Whole home system. The Play:5 gave me a great start and it sounds great!
I love the sound on the play 5. I have a couple of play 1s and while those sound great, the play 5 sounds so much better. It was easy as always to add a new unit my sonos setup.
15 minutes out of the box everything was functioning. Easy setup and simple app to use on my Iphone6. Very impressed with sound as there is a solid range from lows to highs. The soundstage is amazingly full given its size. Bought a play 5 to start and will probably get another play 5 for stereo.
Pros: Easy of use and overall range of sound. Solid highs and lows. Especially impressed with midrange capabilities.
Cons: Pricey but you get what you pay for.
We wanted a quality speaker solution that could play music from our play lists contained on iPad, iPhone and iMac. We were told by friends that SONOS was the best way to go for both ease of configuration and quality of sound. What an understatement! Just plug in the speaker, download the SONOS app, and follow a couple of prompts and you are set! Really no problem. We are old school audiophiles and thought we wanted the traditional 2 stereo speaker set-up. The SONOS Play:5 has such good quality to fill a room that we do not miss the stereo with 2 speakers. We will stay with SONOS and the Crutchfield team for future configurations of additional SONOS speakers.
Pros: High Quality sound Ease of set-up Configurability
Great speaker! I bought one. Sounds great! Ordering another next week. NICE
Amazing sound for the size of the speaker! Setup is a breeze. The app is easy to use. The sound quality of the 2nd gen vs the 1st gen is night and day different
Pros: Sound quality, ease of setup, user friendly app and portability
Cons: Bit pricey but worth it
Pros: easy to set up
Cons: too exspensive
These speakers are worth every penny! The sound/voices are crystal clear and when paired with the sub and soundbar make a great addition to your home theater room. They are wireless, but must be placed near a power outlet. The play 5 are bigger than what I expected, but not too cumbersome. Setup was very easy and completed within 15 minutes.
Pros: Great sound. Wireless. Bluetooth setup.
Cons: Must be near a power outlet. If they were cordless, it would be sheer perfection.
The Sonus Play 5 was intended to supplement a Sonos wired audio setup in a room which was not pre-wired for sound. The power of the music from this relatively small speaker is impressive, and very clear and precise. The unit looks good too and easily fit into the room in question. At this price point it made sense to buy the Play 5 versus running cable and adding in-wall speakers - and we enjoy the extra flexibility of moving the wireless speaker out onto the deck as needed.
Pros: Clear, powerful, looks good. Movable. Sonos app compatible with Apple Music and much more.
Cons: The Sonos app is not perfect. Still getting used to it. For example, it doesn't continue to play the rest of an album after you choose a song part way into the album. Expensive.
I've been wanting to buy this for a while now. Fantastic sound and a no hassle set-up. Out of the box and operational in 15 minutes or less. The app for Play5 is so convenient.....I would def. recommend.
This is an excellent all in one speaker system that fills our loft (with 13 foot ceilings) without any problem. It's easy to operate. We have all our music sharing apps on it, and we love it.
Pros: Convenient, one unit powerful speaker which is easy to connect to your music streaming apps.
Great sound! Easy to hook up.
I bought my first Play:5 a few years ago. Still happy for quality and easy access to many music sources. Now I hace to new ones for stereo sound plus a sub, sounds is great what I was expecting for
When the sun is up and the beer is flowing the Sonos 5 makes enough noise to keep the party going. The bass is robust and the fidelity is superb. When it gets dark and the neighbors are heading to bed the Sonos 5 can play quietly also with high end hi-fi.
Pros: Great bass Sound fills large spaces
Cons: Not battery operated
great style - great sound and simple
Great speaker system and sound. Not thrilled with support. I got 2 of the Paly 5 and a Sub. All set up easily and the app works well. I got these playing quickly right out of the box. The speakers can be linked in a stereo pair and you can put them anywhere. Sound is very good although I am thinking about getting a Play 1 to see if the highs can be enhanced a bit. I don't hear that tinkling very high sound that I am looking for from the tweeter. That said the sound is amazing and I am very pleased with the purchase. The only area of disappointment came from Sonos Tech Support. Although setup was easy I was not able to link to my music library on my Windows 10 PC. I called Tech Support and waited for 15-20 minutes for a representative. I explained the problem and he immediately wanted to remote in to my PC to troubleshoot. I have had issues with this in the past and prefer to be stepped through the diagnosis rather than give control of my PC to a stranger. He stepped me through a few things including using a cool diagnostic feature of the app that sends all of the connection and software information to Sonos. He reviewed this data and said it all looked correct, then asked again to remote in to my PC. I asked him to step me through the steps he would take and let me stay in control of the PC. After a few checks he declared it "must be a Windows 10 issue or some software on your machine". No help, no solution and no advice on next steps. Very disappointing.
Pros: Put them anywhere, orient them any way and they sound awesome. Easy initial setup Heavy, high quality construction Look great, don't take up too much space
Cons: Tech support not helpful and insist on remote control of PC
Called for advice and questions, ordered product, received product, follow up email all within 3 days. Fantastic. Even better is the quality of the sound from this speaker. And set up all of 2 minutes.
Pros: Great speaker, quality of sound outstanding. Set up easy.
Cons: Just a tad heavy, for wife to move, for me no, problem.
Great speaker so much more depth and clarity than Sonos play 3 very pricey, but worth
Pros: Great sound
Enjoying the new Sonos Play 5. Playing it a lot to break it in good. The older model was excellent also & still have it.
Pros: The sound is fantastic. Plays loud as I want in the den.
Cons: Kind of pricey but if you want quality it's worth it.
I've tried many (Marshall, Bose, Jawbone to name a few) and this by far is the best sounding wifi speaker I've heard. A fuller, richer, deeper sound than the others offer. Clear distinction between right and left channels out of a single speaker. Going to by another for the basement.
Pros: Sound. Appearance. Can be controlled easily by phone, tablet, laptop or desktop once setup is complete.
Cons: Setup can be challenging if your network wifi is weak. In the costly range, but worth it when compared to others.
Only way to go is Sonos products. Unreal sound....
Pros: Very clear and loud.
Hooked on Sonos! Love this speaker and buying another soon.
Pros: portable, simple to set up, good sound
Simply amazing. I have a $15K + A/V system with high-end speakers and amps and when at the gym use Bowers & Wilkins P5 headphones which are fantastic. So I guess I'm saying I know great audio reproduction. I immediately signed up for Tidal to listen to FLAC audio (less compression) and the sound is knock-your-socks-off great. What sold me was when I heard them at local audio show and the manufactures reps were playing them. I only bought one but they have 2 for stereo and their wireless woofer so I didn't know if just one speaker would sound so great. Given Crutchfield's liberal return policy, I took the plunge and bought one. So far, I've listened to Classical, rock, pop, alternative and Jazz and ALL sound superb.
Pros: The sound quality across the entire spectrum is accurate. The bass is perfect for my ears, not boomy or underpowered. It is like you would hear it live. The definition of the instruments is very good and even with one speaker the sound stage is amazing. Vocals are crisp and spacious. Piano is notoriously difficult to faithfully reproduce and the Play 5 is dead on accurate.
Cons: They are pricey.
I have been waiting for decades to find a speaker system with sufficient quality and function to easily connect my home with music. SONOS has done excellent job and meeting all of my requirements and in fact exceeding them. Thank you SONOS.
We've been building our home SONOS system over time, adding a new room every so often. This was our first new model Play 5, but our 10th speaker added to our 9th room (we have a paired set of older Play 5s in the living room). The new model is significantly better than the old - in design, depth of sound, and functionality. That being said, I do not believe it should be priced higher than the former model as it was already a high ticket item and the improvements are par for the developmental course. Then again, cost is obviously not the first consideration when buying into SONOS. Let's face it, SONOS equipment is expensive. We are big fans of the overall SONOS experience - we enjoy both having synchronized music throughout the house and the opportunity to have separate, personalized music choices in different rooms. We also love sharing SONOS with guests. Virtually everyone has a smart phone these days so friends and family who visit can easily download the SONOS app and personalize music in their rooms. Set up is smooth, connectivity clean, and music options deep - from streaming to personal library. We look forward to seeing the SONOS ecosystem continue to evolve over time. Oh, and as always the Crutchfield experience was flawless - easy ordering, clear order progress communications, quick delivery, clean packaging.
Pros: Rich sound, ease of set up, design, portability, variety of music sources, options for synchronization and differentiation across units
Very pleased with the Sonos Play 5. This is my third unit. Wanted one for patio use and considered a Play 3 however the sound is so good on the Play 5 I just couldn't downgrade. Great sound even outside with plenty of bass.
Pros: portable, convenient, full sound range.
Cons: High cost for just one speaker.
The Play 5 arrived on my doorstep less than 36 hours after I placed my order. I originally ordered two Play 3's and after some consideration, I changed my order a few hours later. I phoned Crutchfield and they apologized and updated my order to one Play 5. I chose the Play 5 because it had a line in for my DirecTV receiver. The set up took me about 25 minutes, only because I had forgotten my passwords to my online music sites. (Pandora, Sirius XM, Spotify) The sound from this speaker is amazing and you will not be disappointed. Sonos has created a speaker that is superior to any other on the market.
Pros: Sound Clarity Style
Great separation & quality
Like our previous speakers this version is easy to setup, easy to use. It is larger than our other Sonos speakers and offers a richer sound. We hardly ever listen to our cd's anymore. We found a great internet station (Calm Radio) & it is on day & night. Our doxie even likes it when we go out. She curls up on HER couch & sleeps until we return home.
Pros: Sound quality, easy of usage
Cons: Not One!
Super nice product great sound easy to install.
Pros: easy to add to system very nice sound for a stereo speaker
Cons: none so far
Overall I am very happy with the Play:5. It is a great sounding single speaker, and by "single speaker" I mean a speaker "system" in a single enclosure. I bought this to replace a Polk satellite/sub system in my work-at-home office. But after using it a few weeks I decided I liked the stereo separation and bass of the Polk satellite/sub system better. The bass on the Play:5 is very good, but still not up to the level of a good sub. So instead, I used it to replace a bluetooth speaker in the bedroom. Since Sonos doesn't support bluetooth, I connect my iPhone6 to it through the line-in jack on the back of the Play:5. With this configuration, I fall asleep to the ambient sound from an app on the iPhone (via line-in) and wake to either radio or music (via Sonos). Both sound excellent! So the bottom line for me is, if stereo separation is important to you then a single speaker is not on par with a good set of quality speakers. Depending on budget, I can see a pair of these (or Play:3s or Play:1s) with a sub as an excellent system. Or in a single room with limited space for components, the Play:5 is an excellent choice. I should mention that I already owned the Sonos Playbar and a pair of Play:1s for home theater usage. So I was already a fan of Sonos before buying the Play:5, and I still very much am.
Pros: Simplicity, sound quality, line-in capable
Cons: Lack of true stereo separation
The Sonos Play 5 was everything that it promised. The set up was quick and easy and the sound experience is amazing. We will definitely be investing in more Sonos products.
Cons: Quick and easy set up. Awesome sound experience
I've had Pokes, JBL, Onkyo and BOSE but Sonos 5 are by far the best Speakers I have had.
Pros: Wireless, size, simplistic and looks
Cons: Haven't found one yet
Pretty nice sound for a tech speaker and a convenient operating system. I'm a stereo hifi buff with musical fidelity and dynaudio, etc. I've started going over to the dark side for the convenience of music servers and cell app interfaces. this speaker was for my son who is thrilled with the interface and clarity... A really good solution for his lifestyle and Spotify, Pandora world.
Pros: Interface for the young generations and reasonably good sound quality
Cons: A little pricey but saved on a scratch and dent that looks like new..
Excellent product for a great price. The sound is impressive for this little unit.
Pros: Cost, Sound, Size and Portability
I'm an old school music enthusiast, so as expected, I did plenty of research before committing to a $500 single speaker. Listen to pretty much all the available options out there and, in my opinion, Sonos have the most stable platform and the most solid sound as of today. When I first installed the Play 5 in my living room, I was quite disappointed with the sound coming out it. With all the hype I was expecting a larger-than-life sound, but this wasn't the case. After running the Trueplay software a couple of times, my opinion began to change. Sound became more harmonious and I dare to say coordinated. Two weeks later, after installing all the available services and uploading all my music, I love it! Nevertheless, it left me wanting more. Another Play 5 paired? Playbar? What mere mortal got the budget?
Pros: Very good sound and solid software.
Cons: It will probably cost thousands to get a kick-ass system.
Sound is great. Ability to play same music or individual music in each room is a great asset. Purchased recently, but so far no problems.
Pros: Sound, convenience, easy setup.
The play 5 sounds great very easy to hook up but I thought it would be a bigger wow with the new play 5. I have Sonos throughout my entire house I would recommend them for big rooms
Pros: Very easy to hook up and they have a great app
Cons: Wish it had a little more power
I picked up one of the original Sonos PLAY: 5 speakers a few years ago and I have to admit that the new model Sonos PLAY: 5 is a noticeable improvement. The bass is a bit deeper. However, the bigger improvement is the simple shape of the new model speaker - much easier to put in place and adds the option of vertical over just horizontal.
Pros: Deeper Bass, Speaker Shape
Fantastic, especially for a wireless product that is ~8.5"x 14" Wonderful Sound & very easy to use. Controls are very intuitive.
clear sound, easy setup!
Better than I could have imagined. Love it and will be buying more.
I have 11 other Sonos speakers and am very pleased with this new generation play5. It is much improved with better depth of tonality and better overall reception capability than the older generation.
Pros: Looks, sounds, reception
Cons: It all comes with a higher price.
The Sonos Play 5 is the best sounding wifi music system I have tried. It is easy to set up and has wonderful sound performance.
Pros: easy to set up; easy to use; and great to listen to-the guys in support are very helpful and forgiving even for the dumbest mistakes.
This is a really great sounding speaker, you get incredible clarity and volume out of a relatively small package. It is also fairly portable and I can put it anywhere in my house since it will connect through my wifi network. The only downside is some of the functionality with the app and how it connects. In order for music to play through the speaker, you have to play it through the app and therefore can be limited in how you can play some music (for example you have to have Spotify premium to use it with the app). Other than this the speaker is outstanding and I would definitely recommend it.
Pros: SOUND, portable (fairly), easy set up
Cons: App could be better
I wanted to love these speakers and at times I did but just as often I didn't and that was a problem. I had a stereo pair with the sub connected to a turntable. Dream setup and expensive. Upon listening to older 70's music, I felt the sound to be processed, at times the speakers sounded like they were holding back to protect themselves. Newer digital files, Adele, Ed Sheeran, sound great. I imagine for most people these speakers are more than adequate but if you find yourself on the fence between a traditional setup and this, I don't think you will be happy with this. For me too big an investment. My two cents.
Pros: Convenient, No Wires, Access to all music via Spotify
Cons: Sound is not as rich as I had hoped. Expensive.
Great sounding speaker thought it might be a little louder. But it is fine.
Pros: Sound , Easy setup
Cons: Loudness , Price
Phenomenal sound! Easy set up with great mfr support and website
Pros: Can add additional speakers throughout the building and link
Very good sound when paired as a stereo (L and R channels). I sold the Gen 1 to get the Gen 2. This new gen does sound better, although more expensive. I prefer the look of the old Gen 1. When paired these make for a solid sound system. I have an open living room and was too large an are for just recommend just one speaker (16'x18' with two sides completely open).
Pros: Good sound Nice sound separation
Great sound! Easy to setup and use...
This is such a great product. The sound is awesome and can fill a house easy and if you like even more sound you can expand with other Sonos connected through your network. This unit is built very solid and setup is super easy. Sonos app for smartphones allows control of music and volume. Pairing this up with an optional Bluetooth adapter allows tablet and phone connections to stream sound from youtube and such easy.
Pros: Sound quality, Construction, Expandability, Easy Setup
Cons: Price, No Bluetooth support built in
I bought the Sonos PLAY:5 because my boyfriend wanted a Sonos system but also wanted to use a turntable. This is the perfect solution! The sound is great, the interface is simple, and the unit is sleek.
Another hit for the Sonos family! We already have the play 3 (2) and the play 1 but wanted to add some additional sound to our music family. The play 5 is everything that has been stated about it! The sound is amazing and it is just as easy to hook up as the others. Highly recommend!
Pros: Sharp looking, advanced technology, easy to hook up and has fantastic sound
Set up takes about five minutes. The sound is crisp at almost all volumes. Excelent speaker for the size. No cord clutter. I'll get another one to fill the entire first floor of the house.
Pros: Great sound, easy setup, can be controled by many devices.
Cons: A little pricey.
Added the new play5 to our Sonos system (Gen1 play5, play3, connect, and connect:amp). The new Play5 has definitely taken a step forward compared to it's predecessor. Overall sound quality is much improved. Not that the gen1 play5 was bad - the gen2 is just better. Improved sound clarity and range at all volumes. Though not a huge bass fan, low frequency performance is certainly better as well. The capacitive buttons for volume, play/pause, and forward/backward are great. Connecting to an existing Sonos system was as easy as ever. As a fan of the gen1 enclosure, I am neutral as far as the aesthetics of the new enclosure is concerned. Though I have to say the new enclosure delivers as far as sound quality is concerned, and that is huge. Mainly I liked the handle in the gen1 version for moving the unit to different locations. The new play5 will be placed where the older one was typically located. And the gen1 play5 will become a portable unit (garage, basement, deck). I have to mention the function of the play/pause button on the new play5. I have found it to be a great feature. You can now resume listening with just a touch of this button - not the same as mute. What ever zones were grouped with this unit previously also start playing again. No app or device needed to resume. Awesome! IMO Sonos continues to be the leader in getting all your music anywhere you want it around your house. And what that ultimately means is you listen to music more - way more!
Pros: Great immersive sound from relatively small speaker - ideal for a larger room. New capacitive buttons and functions are great. Typical Sonos quality and performance.
Cons: Cost is still a bit of a pill to swallow. But overall Sonos performance makes it a worthy investment in my opinion.
I had the previous generation of the Play5's paired as a stereo pair in my living room of my home that is about 40ft in length by 18ft in width. It is a home that is 100 years old and is has plaster walls, wood floors and opens to a few other rooms with tile. When I looked into the new Play5 I was interested and was shocked at how much improved they have become. The previous generation sounded good but these sound like I have a surround sound in the room when using the truesound app. I would highly recommend these to anyone, great sound for the price.
Pros: Great Sound at Low Volume & and High Volume Levels Bass is Amazing (sounds as if there is a separate sub in the room) Ease of addition to existing home automation system
I have been a long-time user of the Sonos system and have been delighted with all of the advances in their technology and product line. The update to the Play5 is quite a step up. The range, clarity and separation of sound are noteworthy. While I am not going to run out and replace all of my old 5's, the updated model has very noticeable improvements. Sonos continues to show itself as the best in wireless sound technology.
Pros: Sound quality (separation of sound, range, clarity), ease at set up and operation, integration into the Sonos system
Great addition to our system - freed up other speakers for more rooms! Yes sound ever!
Pros: Good size, can stand either way.
Cons: Black plastic cases could look better.
The new play 5 sounds amazing, looks inconspicuous, and the app works well. The plays 1 and 3 are nice also, but the 5 is most impressive, it fills the room with lows, mids, and highs.
Pros: Compact, simple looking, sounds amazing
Cons: I'm not going to pretend that it isn't pricey
Packaging was second to none. Had little difficulty setting up. The sound is another matter. It sounds good, nice base and you can hear the highs very well. It did not make my jaw drop nor did it put me in an awe moment. Not sure what I expected but perhaps with another one and a subwoofer (more money) maybe the awe factor will come into play.
Pros: Came very well packaged. Is attractive.
Cons: While the wi-fi connection is outstanding, I would have liked a bluetooth connection in addition. Now I have a laptop that has crappy sound, a $500 speaker that can not be used except under certain instances, can not use it as a speaker for the laptop. Disappointing.
I replaced an earlier version of the Play 5 with this newly released version. While I perfectly happy with the earlier version, I decided to go for the newer release, based on its early reviews. I am more than pleased with my new Play 5! The range, fullness and clarity are simply outstanding and an improvement over its earlier counterpart. I also enjoy the sleeker appearance and somewhat smaller footprint.
Pros: Fullness and clarity of sound.
The sonos 5 speaker is the best speaker ever. It's well made and offers a deep rich sound that's matched by none
Pros: Deep Rich sound Quality all around Easy to use
Cons: None that I've come across
Excellent sound, no brainer setup, looks great, excellent packaging, a no regrets purchase
Pros: I love everything about this product. The sound is excellent.......it will make you move!!
I purchased 2 of the latest Play 5's to use in stereo mode in a very large (24 x 18) vaulted ceiling kitchen. The speakers are located on top of kitchen wall cabinets. The sound is absolutely top notch. A few weeks later I purchased the Sonos subwoofer and added it to that system. I now have a concert hall quality sound system - actually better than most concert halls! I run the whole system off of an older Ipad dedicated as a music server in the kitchen.
Pros: Fantastic sound. Easy setup with a very nice software interface.
Cons: These speakers are pricey but I don't actually consider the price a 'con' given the quality of sound and workmanship. I plan on buying additional speakers now that I'm familiar with the product.
I was already sold on Sonos, but the new play 5 raises the bar even higher. The clarity and range of this speaker is a big leap forward. Now that Apple Music is available, this is a killer combo...while pricey, I have absolutely no regrets.
Pros: Sound quality, simplicity, access to just about any music ever recorded
Cons: Price...I wouldn't mind a few more around the house, but that will have to wait.
Surprising easy to set-up and great sound in a large space ( 30'x 17'x10') . The SONOS app makes expanding the system a snap. But what earned this rating was the sound. I only hope they deliver 7.2 surround sound soon so I can cut those cords. If you are tired to small and underpowered bluetooth this is what you want.
Pros: Fair price, great sound and easy set-up.
Cons: Wish the grill came in white as well as the body of the speaker.
You can't beat the Sonos system for ease, quality and versatility. Love the second gen Sonos 5. I have music throughout the house now with controllers for two stereos, a 1st gen 5 and a 2nd gen 5.
Pros: Great sound, easy to setup and easy to use.
Cons: A little pricey.
I bought 2 of Play 5's to use for surround sound with the Playbar. Although they are pretty expensive, the sound quality is great. The convenience is superb and the ease of use wonderful. I have owned and enjoyed Gen1 Play 5's (4 of them) for several years. These new Play 5's re bigger and badder for sure. I have recommended SONOS to several friends who are now enjoying SONOS sound in their homes.
Pros: Easy set-up; sound quality; size; user friendly;
Cons: expensive, with no discounts; doesn't play well with other products
Incredibly easy to set up. Amazing sound. The "balance feature is fantastic. Highly recommended.
Pros: Easy set-up, great sound
It is pretty amazing how fast you can go from getting the speaker out of the box to enjoying wonderful music using your smart phone. I have two of the Play 5's in our vacation home, and four in my home. They just fill the house with great sounding music!
Pros: easy setup. great quality sound, sturdy.
I've wanted a whole house sound system for most of my life and started comparing the Bose Soundtouch with the Sonos speakers. The first thing you notice is the heft in this speaker and when it comes to speakers, heavier is usually a sign of better. They certainly look and feel like a much better product than the Bose. Now, as for sound: I've never heard anything like it (Play 5). Just a few minutes of various types of music makes you think you're listening to a far more expensive piece of equipment. It does need a high speed connection and will be affected by how many devices are drawing on your network. A Boost might be a good idea if you have heavy traffic and a moderate speed. Otherwise, my four speakers (paired 1s and a 3 also), now anchored by the Play 5 in our great room, is filling our house with almost constant holiday tunes. I might add one more Play 3 to pair with mate and that should do it.
Pros: Great look Great feel Great sound Amazing versatility Easy set-up Compact
Cons: Fairly expensive May need Boost in certain situations
Just received a Sonos Play:5 - overall good so far. They came in excellent protective packaging, the units are simply beautiful, and it took only 20 minutes to set up - that was great. Sound quality is good - I am using them with Spotify only now - so I take sound quality with a bit of grain of salt. Some variance in bass response - I wonder how much contributed by signal quality from Spotify, nonetheless sometimes bass sounds a bit flabby/farty. Sonos app easy to use - allowed me to set up Spotify quickly as well as locate the speakers in a room. However there is a delay sometimes in song selection and volume control. Also bit irritating that Sonos app does not stay open on iPad/iPhone or give you the opportunity to control it from the locked screen as other apps do - so that you can control it quickly. E.g. if I have the thing blaring and a phone call comes in, you have to unlock your device and locate the app before controlling volume. I took one of the speakers into another room yesterday afternoon, and the Sonos app had a lot of difficulty staying connected with that speaker. Perhaps something glitchy about separating speaker pairs. Nonetheless, Overall I am pleased so far.
Pros: Beautiful design, easy to set up, sound quality overall great
Cons: Sonos app glitchy/slow at times, bass response a little flabby with Wi-Fi player
The Sonos Play 5 is an amazing source for tunes. The sound is crisp, full, and detailed, without any colouration like the darkness of BOSE products. It interfaced easily and quickly with my network and connects to amazing internet sources as well as my iTunes library. I would love to replace all of my surround sound speakers with Play 5's.
Pros: Clear, clean sound. Easy set up and interface with my network. Excellent selection of internet channels. Easy sharing of iTunes library. Sonos app works well on iPhone 6.
Got the first generation Play 5 on a great open box special! First experience with Sonos and all I can say is I love it...great sound and great features within the Sonos App. Looking forward to getting sub next! Was a big Bose fan, but now I think Sonos has them.
Very balanced sound, bass mids and highs are all clear and well represented. The speaker looks very nice and the orientation options are appreciated. The controls are simple and useful.
Pros: Sound Design Functionality
Cons: Software is outdated
Sonos is great. I have an apt and the various speakers are an excellent choice - but the Play:5 surpasses them all.
I had the original Play 5 about two years ago but i didn't keep it because it just never satisfied me with music output. It was very anemic and the bass was very bloated and boomy during low volume and no bass at higher volumes. When compared to similar sized wireless boxes, It pretty much sounded like crap against the B&W Zepplin or the NAD Viso 1. I even preferred two Sonos Play 1's to the sound of the gen 1 Play 5. Well I must say the Gen 2 Play 5 is just insane! It has so much power and clean low bass that its approaching the output of a powered PA speaker like my QSC K10. This new Play 5 exceeds all other compact wireless speakers I have heard. The design is fantastic - its clean, compact and heavy. I really like having the AUX IN port so I connect my turntable or a bluetooth adapter. My Sonos System consist of a Playbar, 4 Play 1's and a Play 5 (Gen 2)
Pros: Massive Bass that doesnt distort - Acoustic Output - Design
Cons: nothing at all
I previously owned two play 5 speakers, as well as play 1 and a connect. When I read various reviews I decided to upgrade and sold my play 5's. (A bit of a hassle that, and not because it was hard to sell the speakers). Although obviously losing some money on the deal, I have not been disappointed. I listen to a variety of music, including classical, world, jazz, blues, etc. The sound is much clearer, much more live. For those of you living in this area it is the difference between hearing music in the acoustically superb Troy Music Hall and the Palace Theater in Albany. In the former Hall you can hear a pin drop and the sound is excellent from wherever you sit. In the Palace, with its carpeting, the sound is absorbed by the walls and floor and comes out muddy and thin. Now the old play 5's were not that bad. It's just that the new ones are that good by comparison. YOU WILL NOTICE THE DIFFERENCE IMMEDIATELY, AND IT IS DRAMATIC. I have not tried to use them as a stereo pair, though I read they sound even better. I use them in upstairs bedroom as my main stereo in the living room has two very old, but good Advent speakers that sit just off the floor.
Pros: Excellent sound, good design
Cons: No bluetooth support. No battery support. These are not really a problem with these speakers, because not one is likely to move them around all that much. It would be very nice to have these features on the play 1 however.
Just swapped out my "old" Play 5s for a pair of the new ones and at first blush all I can say is a loud Phil Rizzuto quality "Holy Cow!" They have most definitely stepped up their game. Did I need a new pair? Do any of us really "need" any of these toys? Baby wants. Baby gets. And...scene. Do not hesitate to step up to the new heights. These are punchier...fatter....cleaner...sweeter. I have the sub too. Connectivity was basically the time it takes to open a carton of Yogurt. Flawless. A million different services. I have both Deezer and Tidal because....well: baby wants. Just amazing.
Pros: Perfection realized.
Cons: Oh why be negative?
Sonos PLAY:5 (Generation 2): The PLAY:5 (generation 2) is part of the Sonos wireless multiroom music eco-system consisting of a family of wireless network speakers, players, and amplifiers. Start with a single PLAY:5 speaker and add more over time - including the Sonos PLAY:1 / PLAY:3 / PLAY:5 powered speakers, the Sonos One voice-activated speaker, the Sonos Connect:Amp / Connect zone players, and the PLAYBAR / PLAYBASE soundbar speakers (all sold separately). With multiple zones, you can play the same or different songs in different rooms. Up to 32 Sonos devices can be connected in one system.
Two Ways to Connect Wirelessly: Sonos brings great sounding music wirelessly to any room in your house, without a big wiring project through SonosNet or WiFi.
- You cannot connect the Sonos system via both the SonosNet proprietary mesh network and WiFi; you will need to choose one. Sonos recommends using its proprietary SonosNet wireless mesh network over WiFi when applicable.
- The Sonos proprietary mesh network will provide a more secure wireless connection with fewer interruptions for optimum performance.
- WiFi is subject to greater interference from other WiFi and 2.4GHz devices on your network. WiFi connectivity is not compatible with 5GHz (you will have to use the Sonos wireless mesh network in this case).
Ethernet Port (10/100 Mbps): In addition to built-in WiFi, the Sonos PLAY:5 is equipped with one Ethernet port (10/100 Mbps). Use it to wire directly to your router to operate Sonos if WiFi is unstable, or use the Ethernet port to provide Internet accessibility to non-wireless devices if you're using a SonosNET Boost setup.
Music Streaming Services: Sonos gives you access to unlimited music; such as your iTunes library, your favorite music services, and thousands of Internet radio stations, shows, and podcasts.
Sonos Controller App: Sonos allows you to control its audio setup, playback functions, and search features through the Sonos Controller app for Apple iOS 9.0+ and Android OS 4.3+ devices, or the Sonos Controller software for Windows PC (7-up) and Mac OS X 10.10-up computers. The new navigation bar (My Sonos, Rooms, Browse, Search and More) at the bottom of the app makes finding what you're looking for effortless and moving between music quicker than ever.
Note: The Sonos device, Apple iOS/Android device, Windows PC, and/or Mac computer must be connected to the same wireless network.
Alexa Compatible: Through a free network software update you'll be able to control your Sonos system through any Alexa-enabled device - including the Sonos One, Amazon Echo, Echo Dot, Tap, and Echo Show (all sold separately). Using the Amazon Alexa device as you normally would; just say "Alexa" and the name of the Sonos room you want to play a particular music service through when instructing Alexa to play music. Play a song, skip forward and back through playlists, target one room or an existing group of rooms, and adjust volume - all using your voice.
- You will need to search and enable the Sonos skill from the Alexa app on your mobile device or computer.
- Your Sonos equipment and Amazon Alexa-enabled devices must be on the same wireless network.
Google Assistant: The Google Assistant will be supported by Sonos in 2018 through an over-the-network firmware update.
Home Network Requirements: To access Internet music services, Internet radio, and any digital music stored on your computer or Network-Attached Storage (NAS) device, your home network must meet the following requirements:
Note: Although Sonos is compatible with most networking equipment, some network devices are incompatible. Usually when networking hardware does not work with Sonos, it's because it lacks support for the network protocols that Sonos uses to operate, like UPnP, STP, and SMB/CIFS. Click here for a list of networking equipment that is incompatible with Sonos; be aware that the majority of this list is made up of older networking equipment, but may still exist as part of a home network.
Automatic Updates: The Sonos wireless music system supports free automatic software updates so you will always have the newest features and music services to enjoy. Simply register the Sonos device and the Sonos Controller app on your smartphone/tablet or the Sonos Controller software program on your laptop/computer will automatically notify you when software updates are available. By simply pressing one button your system updates itself.
Six Discrete Speakers & Amplifiers: The PLAY:5 (generation 2) uses six state-of the-art Class-D amplifiers individually coupled with the unit's six speakers to deliver superior sound to any room. Two 0.75" tweeters and one 1" tweeter create a crisp and accurate high frequency response, while three dedicated 4" mid-woofers ensure the faithful reproduction of midrange and midbass frequencies crucial for accurate playback of vocals and instruments. Each driver is powered by its own state-of-the-art, great sounding Class-D amplifier that is light weight, powerful and very energy efficient in standby and use.
Acoustic Port: The acoustic port on the rear of the unit serves two purposes: it is vital to the sound output of the PLAY:5, and it doubles as a convenient handle when moving it from one room to another.
All-Digital Sound Architecture: From the recording studio to your home the music is reproduced as the artist intended. All filter settings, active equalization, and time-alignment are done in the digital domain through state-of-the-art DSP circuitry so there is absolutely no loss of audio quality or energy.
Equalization Settings: The PLAY:5 offers adjustable bass, treble, balance, and loudness controls for optimal sound performance.
Touch-Sensitive Controls: The PLAY:5 provide touch-sensitive controls on its top-panel. Controls include Volume Up/Down, Play/Pause, & Previous/Next Track.
Mounting Options: The PLAY:5 speaker can be positioned vertically or horizontally. Integrated rubber feet protect your furniture and keep the speaker securely in place. The PLAY:5 is designed to withstand high humidity, such as in a bathroom with a running shower. However, the PLAY:5 is not waterproof or water resistant.
Trueplay Tuning (for Apple iOS): The layout of a room, and where a speaker is placed, can have a significant impact on the sound that you hear. Trueplay, an auto-tune app within the Sonos App, uses the microphone in your Apple iOS device to measure how sound reflects off walls, furnishings and other surfaces in a room, and then fine tunes the Sonos PLAY:5 speaker to make sure it sounds great no matter where you've placed it. The Sonos PLAY:5 speaker already sounds fantastic, but Trueplay brings you even closer to how music should sound. Completing Trueplay tuning for a room takes approximately 3 minutes from start to finish.
Note: You will need to retune the PLAY:5 speaker using TruePlay, if you move the speaker within the same room or to another room, change the orientation of speaker (horizontal vs. vertical), or change the configuration of the speaker setup (going from a single speaker to a stereo pair for example).
Creating a Stereo Pair: For a wider stereo experience, you can combine two PLAY:5 units in the same room to create a pair of stereo speakers. In this configuration, one unit serves as the left channel and the other serves as the right channel. The Sonos Controller app can be used to configure the units in this manner. When creating a stereo pair, the speakers should be placed 8' to 12' apart.
Optional Wireless Subwoofer: The optional Sonos wireless powered subwoofer (616SUB, sold separately) can be linked with the PLAY:5 to enhance its bass response. The set-up procedure for the Sub adjusts the crossover automatically so it seamlessly integrates with the PLAY:5. Through the Sonos Controller app, you can also set the phase and level of the subwoofer to match it to the PLAY:5's output.
5.1ch Surround System: Two Sonos PLAY:5 wireless speakers can be used to create a wireless 5.1ch surround sound experience with the Sonos Playbar (616PLAYBAR, sold separately) and Sub (616SUB, sold separately).
Ethernet Port: There is a rear-panel RJ-45 Ethernet port (10/100 Mbps) for hardwiring the PLAY:5 speaker to your network router.
Aux Input: You can connect an external source, such as a portable music player or a CD player, to the unit's rear-panel minijack (3.5mm) input. The Aux input is automatically detected when a device is connected, and the source appears on the system. Music from the external source can be played in any zone. The volume is controlled by the Sonos wireless music system, however, the playback (pause, music selection, etc.) must be controlled at the source.
AC Power: The Sonos PLAY:5 operates on standard household current (100-240V, 50-60Hz) using the supplied 6.5' AC power cord.

I was impressed with the new Play 5 improvements along with the ease of setting up Sonos. I found the Bowers & Wilkins A7 system way too much trouble to use. [ Bill Feb 08, 2016 ]
Despite having an expensive surround sound system in my family room, a home theater, and 48TB house server for all of our media, Sonos made perfect sense, when it comes to music from Spotify and Apple Music. I do not want to turn on the receiver, preamp, subwoofer, etc. every time I want to listen to some music. I just want to click a couple of button on my iPhone and listen. Move to another room and continue listening. Go to the master bath and continue listening there. [ ALEX Feb 02, 2016 ]

Great Sound, Solid design love the feature to be able to expand easy to all rooms of house, also to mix and match with other Sonos speakers and to control them through one Simple app [ M Dec 31, 2015 ]
We chose the SONOS over the similar BOSE system because of the company's long history in the market, the speaker tuning feature, the more extensive music service selection in their app, and the expandabilty/connectivity with additional devices. [ MICHAEL Dec 23, 2015 ]
Because they are outstanding loudspeakers with the best internet streaming ability of any speakers....and are made even better with the Trueplay tuning capability. And they also have line-in connections for a hardwired source such as a CD player. [ WILLIAM T Dec 21, 2015 ]
I purchased one of the Play 5 second gen(2015) just to see if it was worth the price and was blown away with the sound quality for such a small speaker! Buying a second one so I can pair them in stereo. I own several Sonos speakers, including the original play 5 but this one is by far the best. Great job Sonos! [ Christopher Dec 18, 2015 ]

I have a Play3 in kitchen area and I wanted another speaker in living room (larger Play5 seems ideal). Receiver, Sony 4K TV etc in basement. Sonos is ideal for wifi speakers in rest of house. I wish they made weather proof speakers for outdoor use! [ Jeffery Feb 21, 2016 ]

I heard it is great and I have a play 3 [ Edward Jan 05, 2016 ]
No it does not. It has two connectors in the rear. One is a network jack (RJ-45) and the other is a line in connector ( ?) . Hope this helps [ Harold Mar 20, 2017 ]
It does have 3.5 mm on a back panel [ Nikolai Mar 17, 2017 ]
You will love these! Play 5 is amazing and play 3 is perfect for an office or bedroom setting. They do become a little addictive and I now have 8 of them in total and have two friends now growing their systems! To answer your questions, I don't think they are using any bandwith when off, but if they are it is not significant. Today's internet speeds would be unaffected by the minimal audio stream to these. I can tell you that my mother lives in a more rural area with a 10Mbps internet and never has a problem with this on and the grandchildren on their devices; gaming, streaming videos or Skyping friends. I hope you enjoy them as I am sure you will! [ Alexander Jan 29, 2017 ]
Technically yes, it does have a line in connection, but it is designed to be a wholly contained wireless unit. It contains amplifiers and 5 speakers to stream your own mp3s or music services like Pandora, Amazon, Itunes...It sounds great by itself or can be part of a stereo pair as well. [ Alexander Dec 11, 2016 ]
Not directly. To connect to an existing stereo system you will need a Sonos connect. The Sonos connect has inputs and connects existing equipment to your wifi network. Once part of your network the play 5 could play stream the music from your existing stereo. [ Charlton Dec 10, 2016 ]
it has an aux input so you could hook it up directly to your stereo that way. It can also pass that audio to the rest of your Sonos system (assuming you have multiple sonos speakers). But beware that there will be an audio delay (due to analog to digital conversion) so playing it at the same time as your traditional speakers in the same system, you will hear it out of sync. [ Henry Dec 10, 2016 ]
Yes. It has a 1/8" inch aux connector [ JEFFREY Dec 10, 2016 ]
Yes, they have apps for iphones & Ipads, androids and windows 10 computers. This speaker sounds great and the Sonos system is amazing and so easy to use that my 76 year old mother has speakers in three rooms and loves it! She has had them for 2 years and even texted me last week letting me know how much she enjoys them. [ Alexander Oct 28, 2016 ]
Yes, you can use the app to control sonos [ Jesse Oct 28, 2016 ]
Via the iOS Sonos app yes. But not over Bluetooth or airplay. [ JEFFREY Oct 28, 2016 ]
according to the sonus web site/support, the answer is yes. i even think there might be two ways to do it. [ Harold Jun 08, 2016 ]
sorry I do not know [ MICHAEL Jun 08, 2016 ]
I don't know. We don't have a turntable. I think you can run anything connected to wifi but best to ask tech support. The sound is awesome though. Very clean and deep. [ WILLIAM Jun 06, 2016 ]
No. I Don't think directly, but maybe with a line level adapter of some sort. [ Alexander Jun 06, 2016 ]
had another idea, after thoughts are good too. If you think you can split your Source (TV) audio out to two different Play:5, you could get two play:3's that would do the same as the Play 5. you would still have your stereo and now you have the capabilities to play/put the 3's in other rooms just like the 5's. i think they sell as a set. That was my second thought for my christmas present from my wife :) [ Harold Jan 14, 2016 ]
Once the speakers are paired, they show up in the app together as 1 "Room", which means they can only be used together. You can easily unpair them to use them simultaneously for different audio, but would the have to go through the processor pairing them again. This is also the same if you add them as "Surround speakers" connected to a playbar, in which case all thre speakers are one room. [ Josiah Jan 12, 2016 ]
just a guess here, does the TV (source) have two lines out, one for each Play;5 ? Does a line out cable have the capabilities to be split ? again, one for each Play:5 ? Hate to answer a question with a question. [ Harold Jan 11, 2016 ]
No [ Roland Jul 03, 2017 ]
Sorry, probably not. No bluetooth on these -- they are wifi only. [ Mary Lou Jul 03, 2017 ]
Yes, the Sonos 5 is an integrated speaker/amplifier combination. Quite powerful in a relatively small package. Plug it in, download the app, follow the instructions and it will work using your existing wifi. If plugged in to your router by ethernet the unit will create it's own wifi thus reducing any additional strain on your wireless network lessening the chance of dropouts. It is expensive but a very nice sounding (as well as attractive) piece of audio equipment. [ RYLAND P Sep 16, 2016 ]
Yes the amp is built into the speaker [ CARLO Sep 16, 2016 ]
I would think so just adjust the settings...... but you wont need your other speakers the 5 sounds as good as my 2000 dollar tower speakers it is amazing even on low volume also you will think you have a subwoofer... [ CLIVE Apr 12, 2016 ]
Your TV would have to offer an analog audio output for you to connect to the 3.5mm "Local Source" input on the Play5 speaker. If the primary purpose of the speaker will be to produce audio from your TV, you may want to consider the PlayBar instead: http://www.crutchfield.com/p_616PLAYBAR/item.html It offers an optical input for making a digital audio connection from your TV and provides a simulated surround sound experience (in addition to all the streaming services/options of the Play:5). I hope that helps! My Bio: http://www.crutchfield.com/Support/Bio.aspx?bio=5 [ Ryan Feb 17, 2016 ] Staff
Hi Michael, you can connect it via 1/8 headphone jack cable with an adapter. I've read that there may be latency issues. The second option is buy Connect or Connect Amp but that may be expensive. Also, Sonos does not have a solution for streaming audio from youtube and other web based audio unless its in there application. I think for the price I should be allow to play anything on my computer and stream it to the speakers. [ Alex Feb 17, 2016 ]
Yes. There is a company that makes wall mounts specifically for Sonos. They sell them on here. [ Karin Jan 05, 2016 ]
don't think so but I would contact either Sonos of Flexson to find out for sure. [ ANDREW Jan 04, 2016 ]
Not easily, no. I suppose one could find a way but it would take some time and more than a little finesse I think to craft a permanent mount without damaging at least the finish of the unit. [ Ken P. Jan 04, 2016 ]
You can create a shelf on the wall and place the speaker on it but there are no mounting options on the speakers. [ Alex Jan 04, 2016 ]
