Our take on the Sonos SUB

The Sonos SUB makes it easy to get incredibly compelling sound from your movies, TV shows, and music. Two force-canceling woofers positioned face-to-face in the cabinet deliver powerful, crystal-clear bass with minimal vibration. You can adjust the SUB to tailor the sound to your specific room with the free Sonos controller app for Apple® and Android™ devices. Use the SUB with a PLAYBAR to create a powerful home theater sound system. You can also use it with a PLAY:1, PLAY:3, PLAY:5, or CONNECT:AMP music player to add some extra bass to your music.

Sonos SUB

With a Sonos PLAYBAR, the SUB can give your movie and TV soundtracks real presence (TV and PLAYBAR not included).

Easy setup with awesome sound!

Larry from Flat Rock, MI on 10/11/2017

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I recently received my order for the Sonos Playbar 5.1 Surround system. I really couldn't be happier with the performance! Setup of the entire system was a breeze. The Sonos App is a refinement that simplifies the entire process and also integrates nicely with your music streaming service provider. Everything you need to manage your entire system from start to finish is in one place. I was so impressed with the well thought out hardware / software integration. Whether listening to music or watching your favorite TV shows, this system sounds fantastic!

Perfect solution to sound around the house!

Gene from Kearney, MO on 8/27/2017

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This piece was icing on the cake! I wanted a system for music in the house that was streamed from the Internet. I hadn't heard of Sonos before I called an advisor at Crutchfield. So, we talked about the options like DAC vs. Sonos and the Sonos app. I chose Sonos since the amplifier and network were established by the Sonos pieces. I purchased 2 Sonos 1 speakers, the Sonos SUB, and the Sonos Boost. Yes, expensive investment. So far, worth every penny of it. My conventional sound system was NAD and B&W loudspeakers. Frankly, I've lost enough hearing that being an audiophile wasn't much fun anymore. My hearing aids distort sound around 3000Hz or so, and it's just too hard to program a "natural" setting. That definitely entered the equation for choosing Sonos. Don't get me wrong ... nothing about the Sonos system is cheap or poor sounding. In fact, it sounds great! Best of all, I can now spread speaker throughout the house, have different Internet streams running several sets of speakers, and control it all by way of an app on my smartphone or computer. Awesome!!!

Pros: Great sound! System works well grouped together. Used the Boost to form another network that didn't require my home WiFi. Less interference on all counts.

Cons: Setup was more difficult than I had imagined. I started with the setup process via a smartphone app. Should have just downloaded the app for my Mac laptop and started there. Much simpler and straightforward.

Barry from Exton, PA on 7/8/2017

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Not very impressed when I initially hooked it up. I couldn't hear much difference in my pair of Play 5s (Gen 2). Then I made slight (30%) adjustments to the EQ and Sub settings. That added the extra bass that was missing. You are not going to shake the earth with this Sub if you keep it to reasonable setting adjustments and volume. The Sonos sub does provide an extra sound dimension to the 5s. Is it worth it? It's probably not critical if you have a pair of 5s. Any other combos, yes.

Pros: Works great. Feel the bass.

Crystal clear bass

Adam from Avon, IN on 6/25/2017

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great sounding subwoofer that really rounds out and compliments the other Sonos speakers.

Pros: Super clear and deep bass. Coming from a powered subwoofer and large 3-way speakers, this sounds way more accurate and clear.

Cons: Just a minor thing, but was not obvious at first that the bass level can be adjusted under advanced settings in the Sonos app.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This sub has enhanced my Play 1's tremendously. Once I put the isolation feet on it to stop the vibration I got rich base diffused throughout the room. I really like this product.

Pros: can either stand it up or lay it on it's side

Cons: would be good if it came in a flat black finish instead of the high gloss

Great enhancement!

Wow what a difference! Purchased the Sonos Soundbar months ago as I didn't want to crank up the surround system for all of our tv viewing. The soundbar did exactly what I had hoped and was a huge improvement over the Panasonic plasma stock speakers. I decided to add the sub on a whim and have been extremely happy I did. The adjustments provided on the Sonos app allow me to cater each source appropriately with little effort. Listening to any type of music genre is also dramatically better. What a well thought out and well built audio enhancement for video viewing. So glad I made the purchase!

Pros: Rounds out the audio performance.

Cons: A little pricey, but well worth it.

Pros: This really enhanced my fantastic Sonos system. A classical and jazz music fan, I wasn't prepared for the authentic sound of a symphonic bass drum that rattled my living room. Wow! The Sub is a must-have for an audiophile!

Cons: Pricey. But what the hey!

The Sonos Sub pretty much completes my Sonos system. Whole-house music has been a lifelong dream, and with my seven speakers that has been accomplished. The Sonos Sub greatly enhances my television viewing, as it is grouped with two play 5s and the Sonos Playbar. Listening to music is like hearing it for the first time and I find myself listening to new genres I never appreciated before. The bass response of this speaker is remarkable.

Pros: No rattles. Quality feel. Steady sound.

Simply superb sound. Its amazing how sonos built these devices. No complaints at all. Couldn't get a better sound than this with a sound bar. First I purchased sonos playbar and ran with that for sometime and was not sure to take the sub or not. But wanted to see how the sound bar sounds with the sub. It was really great. I think without the base, soundbar has adjusted to made some changes to itself to deliver more base so the sound quality has deprecated. But once I added the Sub I can hear crystal clear sound. Not sure if the two individual speaker help how. Gotta try that though.

Sonos SUB

Anonymous from Seattle, WA on 2/20/2017

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Awesome. I purchased the Sonos Playbar and hoped I wouldn't need to add the sub because of the price. The Playbar was great on it's own for TV but for music it sounded flat. I added the sub and WOW. I kept switching it on and off to test the difference and it really makes a big one. The sound is much deeper and richer and the vocals stand out more somehow. There is a major noticeable difference with movies too (especially with action sequences and musical accompaniment). It's simple to set up and the look is modern and sleek. The price is a little ridiculous in my opinion, but as long as this won't cause you any financial hardship, I highly recommend getting one.

If you are going Sonos for the TV, this is necessary. Only negative is it is way over the top expensive relative to other Sub's for other systems. Having said that, the setup is simple and the device looks great. Sleek and does not take up a lot of room. Once you get over the price, you won't be disappointed...

John from Effingham, IL on 1/17/2017

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

It's kind of hard to review a subwoofer on its own, but I can say this, when coupled with the soundbar, it makes the sound so much more realistic than soundbar alone. When playing music it definitely adds a depth that is not there with the playbar alone.

Pros: Great sound. Easy setup.

Cons: Price.

Great With the PlayBar

Jeremy from Luverne, MN on 12/11/2016

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I really don't know where to begin. It's just that awesome. I've been looking at the sub and the playbar for a long time now after owning a Play 5 and a Play 3 for a few years now. I wish I had bought it sooner. As soon as you open the box you realize that there is something different about Sonos. The quality is just a notch above what you're used to and the packaging helps cement that notion. Upon removing it from the box you quickly realize that it truly is built better than expected. Setting up the Sub is about as simple as it gets. Plug it in, open the app and within minutes you're listening to music or TV. Simple. Whether it's being used to add bottom end to some music or your TV shows, it adds a dimension that the playbar can't do on its own. Clean, powerful bass. It's the perfect compliment to the Playbar.

Pros: Quality and sound.

Cons: Price

It's a balanced sub where form and function meet. I wish the bass were a bit more punchy or tight but it's by no means a flaw of any sort. Easy setup and adds tremendous sound to my sonos 5.1.

Greg from Morristown, TN on 12/5/2016

This was the last piece added to a setup that included 4 Play 5's. I really didn't think the sub would have that much to offer. I was wrong. I was able to retune the entire system, tweak the bass output and the difference in the way the system sounds is stunning.

Pros: Small Convenient Easy to install Impressive sound

Cons: Autotune feature does not work due to ambient noise so I had to manually tune with 4 other Play 5 speakers. It was not "difficult" but the manual eq options are not easy to find in the software. Oh, almost forgot - expensive.

I just received mine...had to contact sonos technical dpt as at Cruthfield tech support were unable to help Me. I was helped by sonos to set it up. At the end a little better bass sound with some specific types of music. Nothing else. Better to invest the money in an additional sonos 5 second generation.

Pros: Design

Cons: Everything else.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Sub sounds surprisingly good. Unfortunately with the router I have from UVerse, it will not connect wirelessly with my Soundbar. I wish Sonos would figure this out as running a wire to my soundbar defeats the purpose of what originally attracted me to Sonos.

Pros: Looks good, sounds good, easy connectivity (if you have a compatible router).

Cons: Pricey, not compatible with all home routers.

MikeM from Tennessee on 1/11/2016

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I am using this Sub with two paired (L/R) PLAY:3 speakers. The sub really fills out the lower end of the frequency spectrum and this is especially noticeable as volume increases. If you don't have room for the new PLAY:5, adding a Sub to PLAY:3s will definitely get you a complete sonic experience.

Pros: Ease of setup, tight bass, no rattles

Cons: Price

It's amazing the difference the sub does in our open living room/kitchen and dinning area. We have Klipsh ceiling speakers and to get decent song we had to turn up the volume higher then I really want to. With the Sub that issue was resolved and now we have even at low volume full sound.

Pros: Great sound, easy set up.

Cons: Definitely a heavy piece and slightly on the high side cost wise. Wish it was $499, then I would by one more.

A mark of an excellent sub is hearing the bass it without knowing exactly its coming from. You can barely tell from which direction the bass is coming from with this unit. Further, if you get real close to it, the bass becomes less noticeable. Somehow they figured out how to inundate your living room with glorious bass without over-thumping the area where the sub is placed. Beautifully Done!

Pros: Clear inundating bass, sleek looking

Cons: none

RickyT from Eden, UT on 10/7/2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I don't have the most discerning ear but I am into a good sound system that is easy to use and doesn't break my budget. Sonos covers all the bases for me. I have previously purchased two of their 3 series speakers and a sound bar. I was using the speakers for music and the sound bar for the TV. While the sound bar worked well with the TV, I was looking (listening) for a richer, deeper sound; and the Sonos Sub met my desire. Set up was quick and far easier than expected. I, especially liked the sub setup routine allowing me to set the bass response. I've even found that grouping the speakers, and the sound bar/sub was very simple and provides, for me, a full spectrum sound. Though it's not as wireless as my wife would want (each unit has a power chord) it's easy to hid the chords.

Pros: Ease of set up Rich sound Easy to couple with other Sonos components

Cons: Couldn't buy the entire system at once due to price.

Pros: All good

Cons: I would love to have a weather-proof version for outside but this is a dream and was clearly not the intent.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Bought this sub after purchasing two play 3's. It made a huge different for me. Glad I made the purchase even though the price was a little steep. Planning on purchasing the playbar to create a 5.1 to replace my current Harmon Kardon SB30.

Pros: Very powerful. It added a lot just to the play 3's. I would imagine you wouldn't want to buy the playbar without the sub.

Cons: A little expensive but worth it with what you can do with the Sonos system as a whole.

I had only the Sonos Soundbar, which sounded quite good. But, when I added the SUB, it was amazing. Makes a world of difference.

Pros: Very good addition to overall sound and listening experience. Really will thump your chest when the artist calls for it. But, is not overbearing when the artists did not intend an accentuated bass part.

Cons: None other than the fact that i would have bought it a lot sooner if it was less expensive. But it is worth what I paid.

Powerful

Andy from Illinois on 3/8/2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased this to go with the PlayBar, but ended up returning the Sub. It was overpowering the 16 x 16 room. When I turned the Sub down to prevent ear fatigue, there were low parts of the music I felt were missing compared to listening to the Playbar alone. If I had a larger room, I might have kept it. It did definitely help with music on the two Play 1's I have, but I can't justify the high cost to pair with two small speakers. The Play 1's sound really, really good as they are, especially in stereo mode. Watching TV, I only noticed it during movies. It was not used much during normal broadcasts like talk shows, sports, etc. Which is really what I expected. Warning, Sub gets loud. It gets loud enough that it makes me think my house will start falling apart similar to when you hear a rattling and buzzing car with a huge bass thumping down the road.

Pros: Really helps the low notes of the music when paired with Play 1's.

Cons: felt it overpowered the Playbar Bass gets very deep, I noticed my ears would be sore after listening to music (some people my consider this a plus) Price

Compliments Your Playbar!

Pierre from Los Angeles, CA on 1/18/2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I can't say enough about Sonos and the incredible difference it has made to my music and TV listening experience. I purchased the Sub along with the Playbar after having tested their sound capability at a local high fidelity store. The Sub adds nice deep and rich tones and rounds out your listening experience. If you don't have the means to purchase both at the same time, the Playbar is quite remarkable. However, save up and add the Sub soon because it does make a difference.

Pros: Nice rich and deep bass tones, ease of adding to your Sonos network, aesthetically appealing in black piano finish.

Cons: pricey but worth the price.

I was a bit hesitant to order another product after having already bought a Playbar, but I say if you're going to invest in Sonos, do it right. The Playbar by itself was a very nice product, clear sound, but the sub really brings out the boom. It's not just hammering volume, but really complements it perfectly. Lovely for movies, music, and sports. And I find that since I got the Sonos I play to the music on my Iphone much more wirelessly through Sonos. Great item.

Pros: a bit pricey.

Cons: unsurpassed sound. Minimal wires, wife is happy.

Needed if You Have PlayBar

A Goodfriend from NYC on 7/30/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Have a Playbar for my TV in a NYC apartment. TV speakers needed help - while the playbar adds some depth to the sound, it is hindered by lack of bass. The Sonos Sub cures this in spades. Its big (3 shoeboxes) and heavy but gives off no vibration. Helps with TV sound, Movie sound and music through the playbar. My only reservation is that the playbar itself needs this in order to do the proper job. So, the Sub is good - the playbar is OK

Pros: Attractive; no vibration, very good sonicaly

Cons: None with the sub; some with the Playbar. As noted above, this is pretty necessary if you have the playbar and its a good piece of equipment.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Received the SUB about a week after receiving the soundbar and two Play 1s. This delay led to an instant appreciation of the bass enhancement provided by the unit. It was (and is) spectacular! The "tuning" of the output was extremely easy and allowed me to adjust the bass level for the room and my ear. Until I installed the SUB I was not convinced that I "needed" it. The bass from the soundbar and the Play 1s was not bad. However, I have been completely won over to the benefits of the SUB. It really rounds out the whole sound system. When this system was presented to me by the sales representative I was blown away by the concept of the WiFi design. However, the cost of SONOS systems was almost prohibitive. The versatility of the design won out and I decided to try out the system. I am extremely happy with my decision and can't wait to add more components.

Pros: Easy setup. Great booming bass.

Cons: None.

Product Research

Features

Sonus Sub 1: The Sonus Sub 1 is a wireless powered subwoofer, designed to add deep bass (down to 25 Hz) to your Sonos listening experience. The Sub works with any amplified Sonos player, including the Play:1, Play:3, & Play:5, plus the Sonos Connect:Amp & Playbar (all sold separately). It does not work with un-amplified Sonos players, such as the Connect (ZP90).

Woofer & Amplifier Design: The Sonus Sub 1 features two force-canceling speakers (3" x 6" race-track shaped drivers) positioned face-to-face to provide deep, rich bass with no resonance from the cabinet. The speakers are powered by two Class-D digital amplifiers, perfectly tuned to match the speakers. The speakers are mounted into a unique cabinet that features an acoustic slot and dual acoustic ports that encircle the enclosure to enhance the Sub's performance.

Wireless Connection: The Sonus Sub 1 can be associated with any amplified Sonos powered speaker or the Sonos Playbar. It Works on your home WiFi network with any 802.11b/g, 2.4GHz broadcast capable router. It also works on SonosNet, a secure AES encrypted, peer-to-peer wireless mesh network dedicated exclusively for your Sonos system to reduce WiFi interference.

Setup: Once you have positioned the Sub in the room, you can press the Join button on the side of the Sub in order for the system to recognize it. The system automatically adjusts the audio settings to perfectly balance the Sub and the paired Sonos component for best performance. All of the filter settings, active equalization, and time alignment are done digitally through a state-of-the-art Digital Signal Processor (DSP). During setup, you will be prompted, through the Sonos Controller software, to set the subwoofer's level and phase. In some cases, you will be prompted to select the size of the stereo speakers (compact, bookshelf/ceiling, or floor) connected to the amplified player. If you move the Sub to another room, you can easily reconfigure the audio and room association settings.

Note: Make sure all of your Sonos components have the latest software update installed.

Ethernet & AC Power: The Sub has only two connections, both located on the bottom of the enclosure: the power cord connection, and a single Ethernet port (RJ-45) for connecting the Sub to a wired home network.

Placement: Out of the box, the Sonus Sub 1 is designed to stand upright on the integrated rubber feet. You can also lay the sub horizontally on its side, if desired. Four self-adhesive felt feet are provided, if you choose to mount the Sub on its side. A guide for placing the felt feet on the Sub is included.

Home Network Requirements: To access Internet music services, Internet radio, and any digital music stored on your computer or Network-Attached Storage (NAS) device, your home network must meet the following requirements:

  • High-speed DSL/Cable modem, or fiber-to-the-home broadband connection for proper playback of Internet-based music services. If your Internet service provider only offers Satellite Internet access, you may experience playback issues due to fluctuation in download rates.
  • If your modem is not a modem/router combination and you want to take advantage of Sonos' automatic online updates, or stream music from an Internet-based music service, you must install a wireless router in your home network. If you don't have a wireless router, you will need to purchase and install one before setting up your system.
  • You will need the Sonos Controller application for Apple iOS 9.0+ and Android OS 4.3+, or the Sonos Controller software program for Windows PC 7-up and Mac OS x 10.10-up.
  • Connect at least one Sonos component to your home network router using an Ethernet cable, and then you can add other Sonos components wirelessly. Or setup your Sonos component wirelessly via WiFi without any hardwire connection.
  • For best results, you should connect the computer or NAS drive that contains your personal music library collection to your home network router using an Ethernet cable.
  • Make sure all of your Sonos components have the latest software update installed.
Note: Although Sonos is compatible with most networking equipment, some network devices are incompatible. Usually when networking hardware does not work with Sonos, it's because it lacks support for the network protocols that Sonos uses to operate, like UPnP, STP, and SMB/CIFS. Click here for a list of networking equipment that is incompatible with Sonos; be aware that the majority of this list is made up of older networking equipment, but may still exist as part of a home network.

2 questions already asked

I don't think that tis would be a problem. No sharp edges and nothing to really grab on to. [ JOHN B  Jun 21, 2017 ]
Looking at the opening in the center of the sub, the speakers are on each side inside that opening. Although it would be difficult, small hands could get in there. If you could look at one in a store like Best Buy it might help you to make a decision. [ Dennis  Jun 20, 2017 ]
Although my kids are now older, I don't see that a curious two-year-olds could damage the speaker. The cones are actually recessed slightly inside of the center hole, so a little one would really have to get their whole hand in. Even so, I reached in myself just out of curiosity and it doesn't seem to be very fragile. I love the sound out of this speaker. [ CHRISTOPHER J  Jun 20, 2017 ]
Yes, the Sonos SUB can pair up with each of your Sonos:Connect Amp's. You can simply press the "Join" button on the side of the Sub in order to sync with a specific Connect:Amp in your home; and then you can reconfigure the audio and room association settings from the Sonos Controller App if you move the Sub or pair it with another Connect:Amp. I hope that helps! My bio: http://www.crutchfield.com/Support/Bio.aspx?bio=159 [ Larry  Sep 18, 2016 ]  Staff
