Make your next road trip worry-free with TomTom's VIA 1405 TM portable navigator leading the way. It's got quick routing capabilities and detailed maps, not to mention an easy-to-use interface. You'll especially enjoy the free Lifetime Traffic Updates that alert you to congestion along your route, plus Lifetime Map Updates that allow you to keep your maps current as long as you own your TomTom.

Door-to-door guidance across North America
You can view the VIA 1405 TM's detailed maps of the U.S., Canada, and Puerto Rico on its 4.3" color touchscreen display. It even offers map coverage throughout much of Mexico if you're looking for fun in the sun. Millions of points of interest let you find plenty of potential stopping points, including restaurants, gas stations, emergency services, and more. You can drop the super-slim VIA 1405 TM in your pocket when you leave the car, and TomTom's new Fold & Go EasyPort™ mount makes it easy to remove and reattach the navigator when you're on the go.

Lifetime Traffic Updates and Lifetime Maps
With Lifetime Traffic Updates, your navigator receives continuous reports on congestion along your route in most metropolitan areas, so you can steer clear of potential delays. Lifetime Maps allows you to update your TomTom up to four times every year as long as you own it, so your maps and POIs stay current. Simply connect your navigator to your computer, and use the code on the enclosed Lifetime Maps card to download the available map updates from TomTom's website.

Directions you can count on
The VIA 1405 TM's voice prompts say street names at upcoming turns, so you'll hear "turn left on Edge Hill Road" instead of "take the next left." And advanced lane guidance makes it easy to stay on the correct path in situations where a missed turn could lead to lost time. And TomTom's IQ Routes™ technology uses actual average travel speeds rather than posted speed limits to find the quickest route to your destination. For example, if the shortest route to your destination is traditionally slow as you begin your drive in the afternoon, the TomTom will look for a better way there.

Quick map fixes you can share
With TomTom's MapShare software, you can fix map inaccuracies on the spot, instead of waiting for the next update. You can edit speed limits, points of interest, street names and directions, and more right on your VIA 1405 TM. You can also report the error directly to TomTom online and choose to share the fix with other TomTom users. TomTom verifies all changes so you can import edits made by others to your navigator.

Never got signal

Kat from Lincoln, RI on 4/20/2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This device never got signal...ever. We set it up, I had to manually enter "home" even though I was in the parking lot, but I figured once we got on the road it would find a signal. Nope. Tried it mounted to the dash, window, and even standing outside, and it just kept trying to find a signal. Good thing we knew where we were going! I am returning this and hoping for better luck with a different model.

Pros: None

Cons: signal.

Nice when it works

Ruben from Orange County, CA on 4/17/2012

Worked great for a few months, lots of neat features. Like the speedometer and speed limit warnings, red light camera warnings. Acquired signals pretty quick. The traffic function is useless, always find myself checking out traffic on google maps on my smartphone as this one doesn't show you which roads are congested. Then about a month ago, it started having trouble finding a GPS signal. Clear blue sky, no obstructions and it would take 10-15 minutes to find a signal. Not very helpful when you are lost and need to find your way out quick. Now yesterday it got stuck waiting for a GPS signal for several hours. Same issue this morning. Checked the blogs, lots of people with similar issue. Some have been able to fix with a software update or hard reset. Have not tried yet. My last TomTom worked great for 4 years, never had this issue at all. One more gripe, the mount keeps falling off the windshield - very annoying.

Pros: Lots of useful features (speedometer, red light camera locations), better graphics and more features than the $2000 factory-installed Alpine navigation system in my other vehicle.

Cons: Bad mount. Quick at first, then progressively long time to acquire GPS signal. No Starbucks or coffee shops in POI.

Eh, so so, so far

DaveO from San Jose, CA on 4/16/2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Eh, 3 stars so far. I actually read the directions and materials in the manuals before I use the product. Silly, but true. I connected this guy up to my PC, put the recommended OS and map on the device, then took it outside to try it out. No GPS signal for over 15 minutes...and it never did find one. Went back inside, read the materials again, and nothing. Then went on the website, and noticed a few comments about having to hold the on/off button until you heard a tone. Did that next, and how about that, all worked. Turns out, that is the hard reset on the device, and after I upgraded it, it needed that hard reset to start over. It now found the gps sats after a couple of minutes. They really should put that in the manual. There is also a bug in there concerning the daylight savings moves that is fixed with new code. There should be a note in the box about that. Direction-wise, it's been great around my town, but kind of blew it this weekend in SF. Getting into the city on 101, it didn't tell me to get off the freeway, and the screen was really ambiguous about turning. So, I kept going straight instead of the right turn I really needed to take. Needless to say, it eventually worked out a new route, but not until I was a mile into the city the wrong way. Then I had to go thru a ton of traffic to get in. Grrrr. I like the's quite easy to use. Screen is nice and responsive. Can't beat the price...

Pros: mount, screen, price

Cons: Got messed up once on directions, tough hitting a key correctly on touchscreen

Nice GPS if it works

does not work right out of the box.

Better then some.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I had 4 gps units before this one. This GPS although I've use only for 2 weeks. I've found it to be the most useful. It acquires signal fast, recalculates new routes fast. and the mount keeps the GPS unit on the window not on the floor like some other ones.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

It gives good directions - most important. It can be updated and you can offer changes in maps when the roads have changed. Some of the options are not as easy to use as previous GSPs that I have owned. I like being able to save my current location with fewer screen touches. I also like a GPS that includes elevation (when driving thru the mountains).

Pros: Good maps. Correct most of the time.

Cons: Annoying instructions when you are staying on the same road. "Stay in the left lane for 1/4 mile" while the road you are on continues straight. Very slow to connect with the satellites when the car is moving. The "View Map" is annoying when you do not have a trip planned - it always shows the screen with the north at the top, south at the bottom, east is right and west is left. It maintains this even if you are headed in a direction other than north.

Very nice gps

Andrew from Baltimore, MD on 1/28/2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I really like this gps. It gives much better driving directions than the gps devices I have built into my car. The free map updates mean that it doesn't have highway exits on the wrong side of the street. the 3D view makes knowing which way to turn at a confusing 6 way intersection simple. I also like the idea of the traffic rerouting, but I have not yet had any significant experiences with that yet. I bought this mainly for use in my cars that lack gpd, but I like it so much I've used it for trips even when the car has gps (mainly because the 3D view is very nice, and the traffic information is potientially very handy). Andrew

Pros: Very nice 3D view with lane information for upcoming exits Lifetime (as well as user suggested) map updates Free (or lifetime) traffic information

Cons: A little slow to sync up at times (maybe 3 minutes)
