Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)
great pre amp does everything i need it to do
Pros: has everything i need
Honestly, it might just be easier for us to list what the Marantz AV8802A can't do than what it can. That's because this highly accomplished preamp/processor gives you all the connectivity, capabilities, and legendary Marantz performance you'll need to make it the hub of a reference-quality home theater sound system. What makes the AV8802A so special? It starts with all of the flexibility and features of Marantz's capable AV7702 pre/pro, including Dolby Atmos® surround decoding, plus it adds enough high-performance goodies to make an audiophile drool.
The AV8802A's long list of upgrades includes a massive toroidal transformer with oxygen-free copper windings encased in an aluminum housing for superior current delivery and low noise. Large power supply capacitors offer more than double the reserve current capacity of Marantz's AV7702 for increased dynamics. AKM's latest-generation 32-bit DACs are used on all channels to provide exceptional resolution and transparency. The '8802's heavy copper-plated chassis includes a three-piece top-panel plus a double-layer bottom plate to provide a solid, vibration-resistant foundation. And along with its 13.2-channel balanced XLR outputs, this pre/pro even includes a pair of balanced stereo inputs for connecting your favorite high-end audio source. Pair the AV8802A with a solid multichannel power amp (or two), and you'll hear how far the possibilities of home theater have come.
Dolby's latest surround sound technology brings a new level of immersion to your home theater. By employing in-ceiling speakers or special Dolby-enabled upward-firing speakers that reflect sound off your ceiling, Dolby Atmos offers a greater sense of space, for sound that's more three-dimensional. Already at work in film production studios and many movie theaters, Dolby Atmos represents a huge step in putting more "theater" into your home theater.
The AV8802A offers multiple setup options for Dolby Atmos. For instance, you can add four overhead or up-firing speakers to a conventional seven-channel system — this is referred to as a 7.1.4 Dolby Atmos setup and is the recommended standard for the best experience. Here's a breakdown of all the Dolby Atmos speaker configurations this pre/pro supports:
You can use as many as four subwoofers with any of these configurations.
With a firmware update, this receiver also supports DTS:X surround sound, a new format which uses object-based processing similar to Dolby Atmos and overhead speakers for immersive home theater.
If much of your music listening takes place in the digital domain, you'll be impressed with the AV8802A's many digital music features. Built-in Wi-Fi® makes it easy to connect to your home network. From there, you can play music wirelessly from networked computers and NAS drives. Apple® users can stream tunes from an iPhone®, iPad®, iPod touch®, or a computer running iTunes® with AirPlay. Or, connect your iPod® or iPhone to the front-panel USB port and control it with the included remote.
Android™ users will appreciate Bluetooth connectivity, for wirelessly streaming audio from any app on your device. Spotify® and SiriusXM subscribers can listen to their favorite playlists or stations. Plus, there's built-in support for Pandora® and hundreds of free online radio streams. Into high-resolution music? The AV8802A can play files with sampling rates up to 24-bit/192kHz, as well as DSD files.
Due to changes implemented by Pandora, this component is temporarily unable to connect to the Pandora service. A firmware update to resolve this issue will be released on 10/28/2016.
The AV8802A has the processing to play different music in as many as three rooms simultaneously. Want to add video to another room? The Zone 2 HDMI output allows you to watch different video content at the same time in each zone. There's also a third HDMI output for connecting both a projector and a TV in your main zone.
A feature-packed component like the AV8802A is only as good as your ability to set it up and control it. Marantz's setup assistant guides you through all your connections and settings right out of the box. Just connect your TV with an HDMI cable and you'll be ready to get started. Audyssey's Platinum suite of speaker calibration offers some cool features, including independent calibration for dual subwoofers.
When your system is ready to roll, download the free Marantz Remote app for your Apple or Android device. It's an easy way to control this preamp/processor over Wi-Fi, giving you an intuitive touchscreen interface to change sources, play digital music, and operate key features.

Average Customer Review(s):
great pre amp does everything i need it to do
Pros: has everything i need
Setup much improved over prior preamp that I had (Marantz 8801) GUI is also much better. Like the wireless connection, updating firmware very easy. Great sound as I expected. This is a fantastic price! I had an odd issue. I use XLR cables to connect to amp. I did not have to change any of the speaker cables when I swapped out the 8801 for the 8802a. However on running audyssey, I got both front channel speakers indicating out of phase. Sound was also a bit muddy. The speaker cable I have is very clearly marked and, as mention, I did not change the polarity when I did the swap. However after running audyssey a couple of times, I swapped the +/- and the sound much improved! Can't explain it.
Pros: mentioned in review
Received AV8802a pre/pro along with Marantz MM8807 7 channel amp a few weeks ago. Very pleased so far. The AV8802a is loaded with options allowing for future system growth . Currently have system set-up with two of the assignable output channels to allow for bi-amping the front speakers with the MM8077 using 4 of the 7 channels to drive a pair of B&W CM10's providing plenty of power. Found that the vertical bi-amping provided greater clarity, imaging and separation. The system has that great sound that I have come to expect with Marantz. Currently using only a small fraction of the 8802a capabilities as my system is set-up for stereo. The system as I have it currently configured sounds fantastic with no noticeable distortion even at high listening levels - amp has power to spare and runs cool. Excited to see how system performs with the new B&W 803 D3's or possibly monitor's.
Pros: Great price for the quality and options the pre-amp provides
Cons: so far - none
Don't waste money!!!!!!!! After 1 year HDMI ports quick working. Look at some of the other reviews, same problem. Control knobs are cheap plastic instead of solid medal. This unit is not what you would except for this price point!
I bought this unit and it worked great for 3 months. Now 1year later, its been serviced 3x and replaced 3x and the 3rd replacement is currently in service for evaluation. First the hdmi stopped working, then the audio outputs. Note- the programmable trigger#1 is not programmable and is always on when not in standby. The last 3 replacements had no video or audio output. The second replacement did set up and then did not work the next morning. If the unit worked, it would be great. It will be hard to ever buy Marantz again. I should have just spent the money on something else.
Pros: Balanced Inputs and outputs.
Cons: Unreliable product! Expensive! Made by a large conglomerate that obviously doesn't care.
I have owned this processor for about two years and agree with all the "out of the box" 5 star reviews. This processor was easy to set up and the sound quality was good, certainly superior to the 6 year old Denon processor it replaced. However after two years one HDMI input has failed and there is no output from the right front channel regardless of input or sound parameters. This is unacceptable in a product at this price point.
Pros: Easy intuitive setup.
Cons: Long term unreliability.Crutchfield response on 7/24/2017 After receiving Nick's feedback, we looked up his order and found that his receiver is still under warranty. While his order is beyond Crutchfield's 60-day return policy, he can contact Marantz at 800-654-6633 for further information about the 3-year warranty on this receiver.
This pre-pro is very easy to install with clear instructions. There are a plethora of inputs and outputs making installing easy (although all I needed were HDMI and one coaxial digital input). Calibration was very easy and spot on. HDMI switching between input devices is extremely quick with no handshake issues. This is extremely well built pre-pro and really is in the league for those costing much much more. Although non inexpensive, there is a lot of value for the money in this pre-pro. Very highly recommended. I cannot comment on movie processing, as I allow my Sony XBR Z9D Series 4K Ultra HD TV to take on those functions. No Marantz HDMI switching issues with 4K UltraHD Blu-Ray playback via the Panasonic DMP-UB900 4K UltraHD Blu-Ray disc player.
Pros: Extremely well built with more input-output options one would ever need. HDMI switching and speaker calibration is flawless.
Cons: No Dolby Pro Logic IIx for music or movies (not a deal breaker). Otherwise none I have identified.
The Marantz AV8802A is a full featured top of the line Pre Pro that has amazing sound, great switching, and is very hard to beat. I also own an Anthem 1120 and so am comparing apples to apples, with the exception of an amp section. The Marantz has everything you will ever need, unless and until the next great thing comes along. But at this time, with Atmos being the latest and greatest, it's ready when you are. You can't do better than this unit.
Pros: Everything about it
Music: this processor is not as punchy as my Yamaha processor but it's so much warmer. I can't say one is better than another, just that you need to decide if you want warm over powerful. Movies: man oh man, when I heard the ships buzzing all around me during the space battle, I got goose bumps! Wow! Video: I cannot comment on this due to being color blind and hence not investing in the latest television.
Pros: Best on screen set up instructions I've ever seen (even shows you how to strip speaker wire correctly) Calibration system is great. Unlike previous systems, this makes me sample the sound in 8 different locations in relation to my sitting possition) Every option possible for sound and video play Synchs with Spotify like it's an external speaker Has most popular streaming apps built in (e.g., Pandora) Can do up to 3 zones (=/- video) Marantz customer service is almost as good as
Cons: Price is competitive but still quite expensive when you consider you need to also buy amp(s). Then again, you wouldn't be looking at this model if you had more brains than money. I don't like that it doesn't let me force to play the sound modes I want. It offers several choices based on the source it detects. I recall my Yamaha used to allow me to select odd sound modes. I experienced it and read many other people had the same issues: after calibration, the center channel was set WAY TOO
Marantz put their heart and soul into this unit and it shows. I was at first a little concerned about what I was getting myself into after ordering the unit and downloading the user's manual. Once the box came, the little touches because evident from the start. All that you have to do is connect the HDMI output to a TV monitor and power the unit and the setup assistant walks you through the entire setup. The process is easy and the speaker calibration with the included microphone and stand does the hard work of adjusting the unit to give you an optimal listening experience. This thing takes user friendly to a new level.
Pros: Very easy to set up and configure.
Cons: The only glitch I've run into is that I sometimes have to unplug my iPod and plug it back it to get it recognized. May be Apple's fault as much as Marantz.
Preamp/Processor Advantage: Delegating the amplification duties to a separate component allows the Marantz AV8802A AV Surround Preamplifier to keep a healthy distance between noise-inducing high voltage/high current circuits and sensitive low-level circuits. This means that the radio frequency and electromagnetic interferences that are found in most AV receivers simply don't exist in a preamplifier/processor, or are reduced by several orders of magnitude. The result is less distortion and less signal degradation in general.
Note: The Marantz AV8802A AV Surround Preamplifier does not feature a built-in amplifier and requires a separate power amplifier, such as the Marantz MM8077 seven-channel power amplifier (642M8077, sold separately).
Current Feedback Topology: The Marantz AV8802A uses a high-speed current feedback amplifier circuit for its preamplifier so that audio signals from a Blu-ray Disc player and other equipment that support high-definition audio formats can be listened to with high fidelity. Current Feedback technology offers faster signal handling and extended frequency range. Current feedback circuits track rapid sonic changes more accurately and thus sound more natural. Current feedback topology insures astounding accuracy and control even under high-drive conditions.
HDAMs (Hyper-Dynamic Amplifier Modules): The AV8802A utilizes Marantz's proprietary HDAM (Hyper-Dynamic Amplifier Module) circuits for dynamic music and soundtrack reproduction. HDAMs combine the short signal path advantages of ICs (integrated circuit) and op-amps (operational amplifier) with the superior sound quality of separate circuit components. Because HDAMs are discrete designs, Marantz engineers are free to choose the parts best able to preserve the sonic details of your favorite sources.
Optimized Components: The carefully-optimized audio/video signal paths rest on separate circuit boards for maximum performance as well as isolation from interferences generated by high-speed video processing. The Marantz AV8802A is also equipped with a Hybrid PLL Jitter Reducer that is capable of reducing jitter and phase noise that negatively affect sound quality. The Hybrid PLL Jitter Reducer improves the sound localization, reproducing a natural sound field. In addition, Marantz surround preamplifier employs a high current linear power supply with an torodial power transformer for high-quality sound playback.
32-Bit/192kHz DACs: To handle today's wide-bandwidth and high dynamic range content, the audio section of the AV8802A is equipped with the latest high resolution 32-bit/192kHz DACs on all channels. The 192kHz sampling and 32-bit word length capabilities of the DACs allows you to play high-resolution recordings and hear the increased clarity, detail and dynamic range of those recordings.
Digital Signal Processing (DSP): The Marantz AV8802A is equipped with a high-resolution SHARC 32-bit Digital Signal Processor (DSP). All elements of the Surround Processor are optimized to the highest standards by the use of selected high performance and discrete components, particularly the A/D and D/A converters and the sophisticated DSP surround decoder. The AV8802A is equipped with various surround modes to reproduce a variety of surround sound effects, according to the content of the source to be played. The AV surround preamplifier features Dolby Digital and DTS-HD decoding.
Note: Dolby Digital and DTS listening modes can only be selected if your audio source is connected to the AV preamplifier via a digital audio connection (HDMI, optical, or coaxial). To enjoy true 7.1ch Dolby Digital TrueHD and DTS-HD surround sound, the preamp must be connected to your Blu-ray player via HDMI.
Immersive Surround Sound: The Marantz AV8802A AV preamplifier goes beyond regular surround with the latest immersive surround sound formats - like Dolby Atmos, Dolby Surround, DTS:X, Neural:X, and AURO-3D.
Direct Listening Modes: The Marantz AV8802A offers two Direct Listening Modes which bypass the preamplifier's tone & DSP processing for higher sound quality performance. Source Direct provides playback of 2ch or Multichannel audio in its original form, without any surround or tone processing. Pure Direct goes a step further by turning off the preamp's display and analog video circuitry to minimize the possibility of any noised being added to the audio signal.
Stereo Modes: The Marantz AV8802A surround preamplifier also provides two-channel stereo and multi-channel stereo playback, as well a virtual surround from two stereo speakers. The 2CH Stereo mode is for playing in two channel stereo; bass and treble can be adjusted and sound is output from the front left and right speakers, along with a connected subwoofer. Multi-Channel Stereo mode lets you enjoy stereo sound from all speakers. Virtual Speaker mode lets you enjoy surround effects using only the front speakers or headphones.
Audyssey Platinum: The AV8802A features the Audyssey Platinum suite of powerful DSP features; including MultEQ XT32, Dynamic Volume, Dynamic EQ, and Audyssey DSX.
Surround Parameters: You can adjust the following surround mode parameters:

Multi-Source/Multi-Zone: Marantz's Multi-Zone/Multi-Source function lets you select different audio/video sources for listening and viewing in different locations of your home. The AV8802A's Zone 2 offers audio/video playback, while Zone 3 offers audio only playback. This unit is also equipped with an HDMI Zone 2 output connector for transfer of audio/video from connected HDMI sources to Zone 2. The source can be the same for all zones through "All Zone Stereo", or you can enjoy three different sources in these three zones if you prefer.
Notes: Analog video signals cannot be sent to Zone 3 or HDMI Zone 2. HDMI audio cannot be sent to Zone 3. DSD audio cannot be sent to Zone 2 or Zone 3. Unfortunately, you cannot select USB and Network sources exclusively for each Zone. For example, if you select a network source for Zone 2/3 when a USB source is selected for the Main Zone, the input source in the Main Zone also switches to the same network source as Zone 2/3 (this scenario also includes Bluetooth).
Gapless Playback: Many live and classical albums have no gaps in the music. Gapless playback ensures that there are no pauses between audio files. This provides playback with no interruptions, the way it was meant to be heard. Compatible with WAV and FLAC music files via USB or DLNA.
Lock Functions: You can lock all the controls on the front panel of the unit, accept for the Power button, to prevent anyone else from changing the settings on your AV surround preamplifier. You can also lock the AV surround preamplifier's settings, so they are not inadvertently changed.
Source Rename/Delete: You can change the display name (up to 8 characters) of a selected input source. If an input isn't being used, you can delete it from the display so you don't have to scroll past it when you change sources.
Dual Backup Memory Function: This AV surround preamp stores its settings in a nonvolatile memory even when the main power supply is turned off. Using the Dual Backup Memory function, you can write settings information to another memory area to back up saved settings for recovery anytime as needed.
Timers: The Marantz AV preamplifier features a programmable Sleep Timer and Auto Standby function.
Built-in Bluetooth: The Marantz AV8802A features built-in Bluetooth (version 2.1+EDR) with support for profiles A2DP 1.2 and AVRCP 1.4. You'll be able to wirelessly stream music from your Bluetooth-enabled Apple device, Android smartphone/tablet, portable audio player, laptop, or PC to the Marantz preamplifier. You will also be able to control basic playback functions (Play/Pause, FF/RW, Skip) using the preamp's remote control. Advanced music operation will still need to be handled from your Bluetooth-enable device. Song/Artist information is displayed on your HDMI-connected TV. Up to eight Bluetooth devices can be remembered by the AV8802A, so family members as well as friends can enjoy their favorite tracks.
Note: The two included antennas must be connected to the preamplifier in order to use Bluetooth. Due to the differences in Bluetooth technology, some Bluetooth enabled devices may be incompatible, function improperly, or may not support all features when used with the Marantz AV8802A.
Marantz Remote App: The Marantz Remote App lets you control the Marantz Network AV preamplifier using your Apple iOS or Android device. Simply download the free Marantz Remote App from the Apple App Store onto your Apple iOS device (iOS 4.3+), or download the free Marantz Remote App from the Google Play Store onto your compatible Android device (1.5+). You can even navigate the AV8802A's network and Internet content from your compatible Apple iOS or Android device. Have heard/read great things about this pre-amp and it hit the right price for me. [ Miguel Apr 09, 2018 ]
After some deep research and reviews. Close winner up is AV8805 and less expensive Yamaha [ Juan Mar 25, 2018 ]
Probably the best prepro that will do 9.1.4 with 2 front wides. [ Barry L. Mar 15, 2017 ]
best value, this thing rocks [ Robert Feb 10, 2017 ]
Wanted this surround processor for a long time but can't wait any longer for the new model to come out. [ New User Jan 23, 2017 ]
I had not bought a pre-amp for a couple decades so looked for one that did indeed seem future proof and of course got me up to date with all the current technology and connectivity. This one looked to be the best foundation for my main system for years to come though certainly an investment. The review by Sound & Vision was spectacular. I'm looking for a beautiful pure sound experience and Marantz appears to have poured some of their best into this product. [ Clifford Nov 19, 2016 ]

Review in Sound and Vision [ MICHAEL W Jan 06, 2016 ]
I've had my 8802a installed for over three months without issue. It replaced a Denon 3313CI (no issues) in order to gain 4K HDR and improved fidelity. Sounds significantly better, revealing nuances in movies and music. Sounds better than my Marantz AV7701 (no issues), too. No issues with HDMI on the 8802a HDMI. Marantz soon to be releasing a Dolby Vision firmware upgrade, too. Recommend using balanced audio patch cables when connecting to an amp as this cleared up some 60Hz buzz entering the unbalanced RCA cables. Now the sound stage is perfectly quiet. [ Jonathan J. Feb 03, 2018 ]
Hi E.H. I used Marantz AV 8801 which served me for good for 5 or six years. I upgraded it to Marantz AV 8802A. This is a processor that offers great performance. It is a big step forward from its predecessor, much more so than the specification sheet would suggest. . The technology from Marantz's Reference line utilized in the AV8802 elevates its performance well beyond expectations. The gap between the Marantz and the "audiophile" brand processors has been narrowed; the Marantz is closing the gap with its stereo performance. The Marantz AV8802 is one of very few processors that I can recommend as a centerpiece to both a multi-channel AV system and a stereo music system. Certainly you can find components that may outperform certain aspects of the Marantz, but it will be difficult to find a component that does as much as the Marantz does as well as it does. [ GEORGE Feb 03, 2018 ]
I can not answer on the Yamaha Processor, but I am very pleased with the Marantz It replaced a $10,000 preamp and I have never been been disappointing with my decision. It is a solid product and if there any issues, it will be backed up by Crutchfield. The ergonomics of this pre-pro are great. [ Ned Feb 03, 2018 ]
I have had the av8802a for about 9 months. In that time I have had no reliability issues. I configured it for Dolby ATMOS and it sounds incredible. Don't know about the Yamaha, but it replaced an Integra 80.3 and is a tremendous improvement. [ ALAN Feb 03, 2018 ]
I've had my AV8802A for about a year. I chose the Marantz based on reviews and my own experience with an AV7005 that I still use in a living room system. The 8802A sounds fabulous in my 7.2.4 Atmos configured theater. Have had no issues with reliability. While I have not heard the Yamaha A5100, I've read multiple reviews that put the Marantz slightly ahead in terms of sound quality. The Yamaha is much less expensive, however. I have had a number of Yamaha products over the years and they sound very good. Yamaha has it's own proprietary room correction system. the AV8802A offers Audyssey XT32 pro that can be professionally calibrated if that is desired. Hope this helps. [ Douglas Feb 03, 2018 ]
I have used mine for over a year now I guess for many hours a week and have had no issues - knock on wood! :) Don't know how it compares to Yamaha, but it does sound quite good when paired with good amps. [ Stephen Feb 03, 2018 ]
I've been using my AV8802A for about a year with no issues. It is by far the best sounding prepro I've had, and I have owned many highly rated ones over the years. [ Barry L. Feb 02, 2018 ]
The 8802a is much better at HT and 2Channel. [ Tushar Feb 02, 2018 ]
Thanks for your question. For information on comparing two or more models I would recommend reaching out to an Advisor by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat. They will be able to help determine the differences and help you make the best choice for your system and your budget. [ Krissy Feb 02, 2018 ] Staff
The 8802A has a mm phone input, no mc phono input. So you would need a mc phono preamplifier to connect to one of the analogue inputs. [ Ned Dec 31, 2017 ]
Don't know. [ ALAN Dec 31, 2017 ]
All of the inputs do as of a firmware update. The difference between 8802a and 8802 is the 8802 shipped with no HDCP 2.2 support. If you had a 8802 you had to ship your unit to get the hardware upgrade, the 8802a shipped with the upgrade already in place. So in short, if you have a 8802a with the latest firmware upgrade (done over the internet) all inputs will be HDMI 2.0a w/HDCP 2.2. [ Gianni Dec 19, 2016 ]
You are correct. The Marantz does not offer the Pro Logic II or Pro Logic IIx playback modes. I will notify our web team to have this corrected ASAP. Thanks for letting us know. My Bio: http://www.crutchfield.com/Support/Bio.aspx?bio=5 [ Ryan Aug 24, 2016 ] Staff
It supports HDR from my AppleTV 4K to my LG C7P perfectly from all inputs and out both outputs. Supports it in pass-through mode, too. Make sure your TV HDMI input is HDR compatible and it is set to HDR mode. The default may not be set to HDR. Also, make sure the TV input is not set to RGB as this crushes the image creating color banding. Set to auto or similar. Looks amazing. [ Jonathan J. Feb 03, 2018 ]
I don't have a HDR TV, or content, to test it but according to the published specs "HDR - High Dynamic Range - and extended colour space by standard BT.2020 are supported." It is also HDCP 2.2 compliant so it should be able to handle Ultra 4K copy protection. [ Mark Jan 13, 2016 ]
Yes. That is a requirement to be certified HDMI 2.0A [ Gary Jan 13, 2016 ]
