Marantz sweats the small stuff
Marantz included circuitry refinements and specially selected parts straight out of their high-end Reference Series playbook. For example, high-quality capacitors are used in the audio signal path for superior transient speed and better bass response — giving lifelike energy to your music. And the CD5004's advanced Cirrus Logic digital-to-analog converters (DACS) deliver the kind of rich, detailed sound you'd normally expect to hear only from costlier players.

Music enthusiasts will love the CD5004's Audio EX mode. It mutes the digital audio outputs and turns off the display. By eliminating these potential noise sources, the CD5004 delivers pristine sound quality. Marantz also uses widely spaced, gold-plated RCA jacks that won't cramp the heavy-duty connectors found on high-quality cables.

Product Highlights:

  • plays CDs, CD-Rs & CD-RWs, and MP3 & WMA CDs
  • 192kHz/24-bit Cirrus Logic CS4392 digital-to-analog converters for exceptional sound quality

Outstanding Performance

JohnC from DuBois, PA on 4/23/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The Marantz CD5004 is an outstanding performer. The sound is full of detail yet always warm and inviting to the ear. Listening to well recorded CDs is like rediscovering your collection. The appearance is most attractive and the physical feel of the machine is solid. The remote is well thought out and easy to use. One heck of a CD player for the price.

Marantz CD 5004: Outstanding

BertR from Pensacola, FL on 2/2/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was prompted to purchase he Marantz CD 5004player because of the fine review it was given by Stereophile magazine and it's placement on their recommended components list. It is the least expensive player in the Class C category. The Marantz replace a 14 year old Sony player that was highly regarded when it was purchased. My wife and I were totally unprepared for the top to bottom improvement in sound. Every aspect of our sound was improved, noticeably! This player is highly recommended. Associated components are: Carver 1.5 T amplifier, Carver C-1 preamplifier and Paradigm Signature Studio 60 speakers.

Surprisingly great!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

After many years of musical enjoyment, my Rega Jupiter CD player ceased to recognize CD"s. With over 1000 CD's in my collection, I needed to find an economical short term solution. I read a number of reviews for various players from many manufacturer's and honed it down to a couple that I felt would work. The Marantz had many positive reviews from a lot of sources, and with Crutchfield's 60 -day return policy, I decided to order the CD5004. Another unexpected surprise was there were "open box" specials which brought the cost down to $299.00. I received the unit in about 5 business days and it was hard to tell if the box had ever been opened as everything appeared to be new. I installed the player in my system (Audio Research amplifier and Audible illusions preamp) and it sounded acceptable. Not great, but I realized that it needed time to "burn-in". After about 60 hours of warming up, the CD player really "opened up" and I was noticing a very beautiful mid-range presentation. The soundstage is different from my Rega Jupiter, but the Marantz is a very musical performer, especially at this price point. I also added an Audiquest NRG-2 power cable which seems to have really added a level of clarity. Overall I am very pleased and surprised by how much I am enjoying the sound being produced by this player. It may turn out that this is not a short-term solution after all, but a piece of equipment that will bring years of enjoyment.

Pros: Very solid build and construction Easy to operate Smooth CD drawer Very responsive remote control Headphone jack is a nice feature

Cons: Overly sensitive to CD deficiencies, i.e. poorly recorded or fingerprints and scratches on the CD surface.

Very nice player but not miraculous. Currently paired with Marantz SR5007 Receiver and Polk Rti A7 towers, Rti 3 book shelves as surround, CSi A6 center, and PSW 125 Sub.

Pros: Appears to be well built (has a solid feel) looks good and sounds decent.

Cons: none for the price

A perfect match

Emile L from Greenville,SC. on 10/28/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Some time ago, I purchased the Marantz integrated amplifier PM 5004. Paired with new Polk Audio tower speakers and still using an old NAD single-CD player, the whole package was very satisfying and I enjoyed for months what was for me the most perfect of stereo systems. Recently, after the old CD player started to act-up, I decided to acquire the long conveyed Marantz CD player 5004. Though twice the size of the NAD player it was about to replace I did not think that the Marantz was going to make a big difference to my ears. How wrong I was! A life long JS Bach aficionado I opted for the cantata BWV 34 "O ewiges Feuer,o Ursprung der Liebe" to try the Marantz. The sonic clarity, the ability to handled at the same time the high D trumpets, the timpani section and the complex multi-parts chorus was nothing short of miraculous. After that revealing test I had to listen to Brahms' last movement of his 4th symphony, with its chaconne inspired by Bach BWV 150. There again a long familiar piece acquired a new dimension. The remarkable thing about the Marantz is first and foremost its value for the money. One would have to spend hundreds more to even notice a difference in the rendition of the music. It has simple, smooth and logic switches. Connected to the amplifier power supply, it is easy to use. The straightforward,no frills, very high quality package was acquired at a very reasonable price. With the two Marantz components I got a high-end system that did not break the bank.

Pros: Tremendous value for the money. A perfect match to the Integrated amplifier PM 5004

Cons: For the kind of money? None!

Best for consumer-grade systems

Geary from Bethesda MD on 7/9/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

After 5 days of burn-in, the basic sound of the CD504 is an overwhelming emphasis on upper bass and lower midrange, and slightly rolled-off highs above 8K, and perhaps a little less detail in the midrange. The bass/lower midrange emphasis persists no matter what CDs I listen to. I have auditioned a wide range of CDs, from Vaughn Williams/Tallis Theme by Boult, to various medieval and renaissance vocals by Ensemble Organum and Hesperion XX, to Verve remasters of Getz/Gilberto, Rudy Van Gelder remasters, Peggy Lee - Things are Swinging, Dionne Warwick collection on Rhino, Beatles 2009 stereo remasters, the Who - Sell Out, and Al Green - I'm Still in Love with You (Hi remaster) and The Band - eponymous "brown" album). My overall option: the CD5004 player is voiced for consumer solid state equipment and small speakers with little real bass, and typical mass electronics that have "solid state" harshness. The voicing compensates for those attributes, but is not a good match for my system. My rating is on an absolute scale; I would rate it a 4-5 at its price level. My system, to provide perspective: My previous CD player was a NAD purchased 7 years ago (transport laser died), and before that two Magnavox CD players, self-modified per Walt Jung/Audio Amateur articles, driving Scott Model 200 integrated tube amplifier through 18" twisted pair Belden teflon-insulated cable, driving Vandersteen 2ce speakers on Sound Anchor stands.

Pros: Solid construction, as evidenced by the weight of the unit and general solidity of the controls. In its price range, I emphasize that it is a good value, and would rate it 4-5.

Cons: Voiced for consumer-level solid state equipment and smaller speakers, and perhaps more modern tube equipment. Not a good match for older tube equipment, modern audiophile equipment or speakers with extended bass.

Nice player with unusual features

Peter from Washington DC on 5/30/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is an attractive and smooth running player. The remote is really nice, having a handy volume control. The player allows you to adjust pitch and also to loop a passage, which few players at any price will do. (Presumably budding musicians are the audience for these features.) The sound quality is excellent - very detailed and clear. The manual and packaging all bespeak a well-conceived product. There's no USB port - if you want that you have to go up to the next model - which (I don't think) has the pitch control and passage loop feature. And it won't play SACDs but generally that feature is only found on much more expensive players. All told, a high quality basic player with some unique features for musicians.

Pros: Excellent sound, smooth operation, special features should appeal to musicians

Cons: No USB

Very happy. This is a solid machine with exclent sound. I replaced a denon 615 and noticed the sound improvement with the first cd played.

Pros: Solid, excellent sound, simple to use, price is reasonable and it looks as good as it sounds. Crutchfield is dependable and has great tech support. The one day shipping to Va helps too.

Cons: none

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Purchased for my dark room, the Blaeck Mariae, to replace a Kenwood 5-Disc carrousel (1995 model). Tremedous difference. Discernably clear and enjoyable listen. Appears well-made and rather smart looking device. Easy use. Most importantly, it does its job, playing my CD collection and making me happy listening quality music whilst I work on my projects. The other more expensive models only offerd mindless silly things, such as plugging in my iphone, or perhaps making some toast. I dont want toast, nor to plug in a laptop, nor for a CD player to do the dishes. I want press play, and move on to something pleasurable, such as listening excellent music and drinking fine wine whilst I expand my mind. You shall love it.

Pros: Great Value.

Cons: None observed.

Soilid CD player

Marel from Somers, NY on 3/3/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I've had it only a few weeks, but it seems to help my Cds sound great. My old changer died and I discovered that CDs seem to be passe. However, so is my receiver and so, I guess am I. Hooking it up to the1970's receiver was absolutely no problem and operating it is simple. Yes, I could have sprung for a Blue-ray device that handles CDs and DVDs--but solving the hookup was a probable time consumer and I wanted to use my extensive CD collection. Botto line: it woreks well and I'm happy.

Pros: Perfect for use with legacy equipment and my CDs sound better than ever.

Cons: None--unless you want the latest and greatest

RSL from NY on 2/21/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This CD player has truly impressed me with its performance. I don't own an expensive set of high-end speakers, but the improvements in clarity, imaging, and depth of sound stage from this CD player is quite drastic when compared to the external DAC plus Laptop combination that I was using before. Currently I have the Marantz 5004 connected to a pair of Audioengine A5+ with a pair of quality interconnect RCA cables and a used Audioquest Type 4 cable for the right speaker. I am a performing classical musician and my critical listening switch is always in the ON position. So having a CD player that can stand up to a session of analytic listening is absolutely wonderful. What I appreciate the most from this CD player is its ability to sort through a thick orchestral score and produce a sound stage where each instrument group occupies its own space; and most importantly being able to image the winds behind the strings, the brass behind the winds and the percussion behind the brass. This depth of sound stage is one of the many great qualities about the Marantz 5004 that keeps catching my ears every time I listen. On top of it all, the fact that Marantz includes an Audio EX mode shows a dedication to detail that is admirable.

Pros: Great performance with an affordable price tag.

From a critical listener

JIm from Erie, Pa on 10/22/2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

We have moderately high end equipment at home and this Marantz player is crystal clear without being harsh. It brings out detail at the low end, high end and especially the mid-range frequencies. On our speakers with a Pioneer Elite 200w/channel separate amp, the sound is superb! And it is equal to the Marantz changers (we have 2). It is not as warm sounding as a Revox we have and very similar, but slightly better than pioneer with legato link in some ways. I am also the DJ for a chapter of USA Dance. We use state of the art A-Line Acoustics line arrays (the big brother and big sister version won pro-audio's speaker of the year award and the version of my speaker was at Radio City Music Hall and is now on off broadway shows) for our dances. This CD play is to accompany another (same) Marantz I use at the dances. And to be clear, we have a paid license from ASCAP and BMI to play music at our dances. This player litterally makes those speakers come alive (B&O 2x200watt amps, equalized to a natural voice sound; run in mono with professional grade mixer & wiring). I have been told by many of our members (some are muscians) that they hear things with this player that they do not hear on their home systems!! I have compared this player with two different Denons and my wife can hear the difference in about 5 seconds! CDtext with CD-R's works flawlessly. The other features work flawlessly. CD-R play and the tracking is better than on my Revox.

Pros: Crystal clear sound without being electronically harsh. The other 3 Marantz players I have work flawlessly for over a year and a half now. If you have a decent system including professional grade cables and speaker wire (important for bass), you will hear a superb sound. Price is very inexpensive!

Cons: none; compared the sound to an optical output going into a Yamaha Av 2000 with 24 bit BB D/A converters. The sound is very similar although the Marantz is a very little bit better.

Audiophile sound for reasonable cost

Joseph Councill W from Smyrna, Ga. on 6/25/2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Disappointed upon listening the first day out og the box. After a day of break-in, FANTASTIC. A very rich sound with clear mids and impeccable highs. Very detailed with a wide sound stage. An excellent value comparable to players 3 times its cost in overall sound quality. Very good for jazz recordings. Have purchased audiophile equipment for 42 years and this definitely a "best Value" product when one considers cost versus sound quality.

Pros: cost. sound quality

Cons: too soon to know any

As I expected

ankaradave from Illinois near St Louis on 5/13/2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

If there was a rating of 10, I would give it a 15! I've owned a Marantz product before, but the CD5004 went beyond my expectations. It brought out the full sound of my speakers as I have never heard them before. Crisp trebles, solid base, and a very full sound in the middle. If I was offered $1,000 for it, I'd tell him to take a walk.

Pros: Everything

Cons: None that I have run across

Great Sound For The Price

Pros: Great sound, text feature, three connection choices, headphone jack, and easy remote to use.

Cons: None so far

A get good source to your system

another music fan from Nevada on 2/9/2012

This CD player has a very nice sound if some early CD players sounded this good people would likely be saying good bye vinyl only missing the giant album cover art. So good CDs sound great on it. Bad cds from bad production, engineering and horrible mastering extreme compression nothing is going to help those albums ie Death Magnetic,Californication etc Anyways the good things about this is it is dead quiet not that I would be able to hear the disc spinning when listening to speakers. But I've never had a piece of equipment with spinning discs be dead silent it makes me assume a high build quality. The CD tray comes out smooth goes in smooth CD loads quick. The CD tray is thick so it real easy to put your discs in unlike DVD players these days of thin trays that you put a disc in and you wonder if the tray will snap off. Using the remote you can skip tracks easily punchy the track title to any number and the song instantly comes on. The remote is extremely responsive unlike a lot of remotes seem to not be Comparing this player to a 1991 era Yamaha CDP the Marantz sound is thicker, more alive, better dynamics, stronger more defined and detailed bass, micro details come out, more clarity in the highs, vocals jump out,and a far more detailed midrange. Comparing to a DVD player I'm thankful CD players are still made by quality companies because the sound on those are a pain I've played about 200 albums so far on it no problems. I think it will last

Pros: Build quality seems really good.Sound is very good

Cons: None really.

Great sound but other features lackluster

H from Clarkston, GA on 2/7/2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The main function of a CD player is to deliver great sound and this unit does this very well, not just by way of the normal output to a pre-amp or receiver but also from the headphones and that's a very nice feature. Other positives include both coaxial and optical outputs. Unfortunately there are some problems that Marantz should not have permitted. First, the button to change track forward or backward don't respond well as well as they should. Sometimes it's necessary to press them several times before they respond. Another problem is that CD-Text which was one of the very attractive features for me seems to work very poorly when I'm using CD/RW discs. It seems generally OK with CD/Rs. Since the waste issue with CD/R is a concern for me, I like to use CD/RWs whenever possible. Having this problem seems strange since it plays CD/RWs just fine. Finally, the display is not persistent. If you want to view CD text, you have to do set the display each time you load a CD. This is simply ridiculous. If they are going to provide CD-Text features, they should have thought this out much more carefully. "Sloppy" comes to mind.

Pros: Great sound - great headphone output - excellent outputs, both coax and optical

Cons: Poor CD-Text performance with CD/RWs - display has to be reset for each CD - occasional poor reponse from track change buttons

Pros: Cruchfield service is outstanding! Not one mark on the box...impressive!

Absolutley the best sounding CD player I have used!

Mario from West Sacramento, Ca on 1/20/2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The true sound is fantastic! The ease of operation, especially the "pitch control" for up or down tuning what is being played to match what key my band plays the song in, makes practicing with a CD a snap. The other great option is the 10 sec back repeat function. Makes getting those riffs & solos just right....

Pros: CD Stabilization makes playing drums in the same room a breeze. There is no skip at all.

Cons: I have not experienced a Con yet.

Love this Unit

Mark from Tulsa on 1/18/2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This unit makes my cd's sound better than ever. Love it. I used to own a 2230 receiver back when I was just a young man and I loved it too. Also, it's a clean looking. I like that. If I could only connect to my old 2230, I would be thrilled.... You can wish, can't you?

Pros: Sound quality, which is awesome and the clean and minimal look of the controls. I like that.

Cons: None so far.

Nice, but inconsistent from unit to unit.

Steve from Pennsylvania on 9/30/2011

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I'm not sure how to rate this. I've had three of these in the last month and they didn't all sound the same: Two of them were cosmetically perfect, but had a glaring quality in the midrange, distortion on the high end, and a muddled soundstage. Lively and bright, but harsh and fatiguing IMO. Vocal sibilances on older CDs were like distorted ice-picks in the ears. Excessive EQ was required to make some of them listenable at all. 3-stars at most on these. The third one had a crooked display and won't balance on it's feet, but the sound was completely different, and significantly better. Clear, clean, and balanced, with a wide, distinct soundstage. Mids were warm and smooth, and the highs clean. Those sibilances are focused and smooth, making them listenable and non-fatiguing. A bit darker sounding, but more like the higher-end players I've tried. 5-stars on this one. So, I guess it's like all the other Asian-made stuff - it's hit or miss on quality, but I'm still dismayed by the apparent level of inconsistency in the sound. Maybe I had bad luck with the first two, but I'm surprised by all the good reviews if there are a lot of them out there like that. Obviously, I've kept the better sounding one, but I'm still not entirely sure at what I have here. Nice unit, but beware.

Marantz 5004

Chuck from Ga. on 7/27/2011

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I've played with this unit enough to know it out performs the two I've been using by a long shot. The sound is full bodied, stable, and evenly presented with no sense of harshness. Steve Winwood's piano literally sounds as big as my room on Traffic's "Low Spark" cd. I know it's an entry level player, but so far performance wise I can see no reason to look further. I was skeptical about buying any manufactures bargain player, but with what I've heard so far, combined with Crutchfield's satisfaction policy, it seems like a no brainer. Excellent sound, a plethora of features, and the entry level price adds up to great value for me.

Brilliant Sound

Stephen from Tunkhannock, PA on 6/26/2011

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I've had many CD players since the beginning. From small and expensive, larger and cheaper, multi-disc player, car, boombox, portable, etc. The sound from this unit is beyond anything I thought a CD could achieve. Depth, deep bass, brilliant detail, presence, lively. Controls are a dream, remote is super handy. I play through classic JBL 100's that have never ever sounded better, even with their age. So glad I splurged on this one.

What a difference!

Donny from Sonora, CA on 5/25/2011

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

OK, I'm cheap. But I think I have a decent ear for quality music. I have been listening to CDs through DVD and Blu-ray players (Toshiba 3109 and Sony BDP-350) for the last 15 years. But I got inspired when I dusted off the old Toshiba and played some of my CDs through it again. Hmmm. It sounds better than the Sony BDP. The player DOES make a difference! I tried a few 1990s vintange CD players (JVC and Philips) and did some research. I found that I could tell the difference in the 'sound stage' for my favorite tracks on some players. And the research led me here to the Marantz. Honestly, after I ordered the CD5004, I had a bit of buyers remorse. How could it be worth $350? I paid less for my amp (Yamaha RX-V365) and used speakers (JBL P20s). But I figured my wife wanted to get me a nice birthday present. So I unboxed the Marantz, and hooked it up to the analog in jacks of my amp and set it to 'Direct' (no digital processing). I sat my wife down and put Mary Black (No Frontiers) on. We 'felt' the difference. I have never heard the dynamics and presence of 'I Dream of Columbus' like this before. Then we tried Norah Jones. Same jaw-dropping experience. Of course other 'lesser' CDs are not as noticeable of a difference, but I'm sold. I'm not sending it back. I just need to upgrade my amp and speakers now. This could get expensive! Thanks Marantz for giving me back the joy of music!

Wary lover

Morgan from New York, NY on 4/29/2011

I love that Marantz CD sound but I'd encourage prospective buyers to look at other brands first. Marantz reliability can be spotty. My favorite CD player of all time is a Marantz SA8260, but mine was in warranty repair so often I wondered if I hadn't bought an '80s era Jaguar, and the service was pretty mediocre. (The local NJ Better Business Bureau grades the company an "F.") Anyway, just a note of caution.

Chuck from Knoxville,Tn on 4/29/2011

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I decided to give this unit a try after an annoying experience while using my DVD player to play cd's-all I can say is, if you can't hear a difference between the Marantz and a cheap player something is definitely wrong! The clarity and depth of the music is incredible. Harvey Mason's drums ( Fourplay) were killer-Larry Carlton's ES-335 sounded sweeter than EVER-I could go on---new Drive By Truckers disc was amazing-every instrument and vocal was crystal clear--I could not stop listening---my receiver is a Denon AVR 3808-Cambridge Tower II speakers and Def Tech subs-bottom line-this is the best player I have ever heard (I admit I haven't heard the very high end units but I dunno how it could be any better!) As usual Crutchfield was awesome-got a great deal on an open box unit. Extremely satisfied with my purchase (and as a musician, sound tech and home studio engineer I'm pretty picky)

Very solid CD player.

Picked this up for my office system and I love it. I purchased this after I have had such a great experiance with my Marantz SACD player in my main system. For standard CD playback, this sounds just as good as my SACD player. Great warm tone, detailed and great imaging. If you don't want to spend a fortune on a CD player and can give up SACD, this is the machine to beat.

Gary from Rough River, KY on 4/5/2011

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Superb product. Right out of the box it was bass heavy, then a little bit on the high side. But after a short break in period, it has settled in to a very rich sound. Using a CD of Steely Dan, & dialing up FM, the stereo imaging was outstanding. Bass was tight, mids clear with highs impeccible. Moving into a U2 CD, the bass tickled my feet. You can really feel the music. This CD player replaced an old Sony that was used mostly on pro sound & found it's way to my main stereo system. Yes, you can hear the difference. Highly recommended.

Way beyond what you'd expect

What an absolutely fabulous value this is. After reading a review in Stereophile, I had to try this machine in my den. I couldn't be happier. The sound is smooth, the soundstage is clear and defined. I thought I'd have to spend 4 times as much to get this kind of quality. No need for an outboard DAC with this one. Don't hesitate if you want an affordable CD player that really does what it's supposed to!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this deck because my 10 year old Pioneer DVD player had started skipping on a coupld of CD's when played loud. I read that a stand alone single disk CD player sounded better than a DVD, or a CD with a changer. Well, I recorded 2 CD's and put them on both machines with a 3 second lag. Switching back and forth, if there is a difference I sure couldn't hear it.The CD that skipped on the Pioneer, also did on the Marantz, so I guess that problem was the CD. It does seem like a well made unit.

Aluminum Front Panel: The unit's front-panel combines the structural advantages of extruded aluminum with the resonance absorption characteristics of glass-reinforced resin.

Disc Compatibility: The Marantz CD5004 Single Disc CD Player can play CD, CD-R, and CD-RW discs.

CD-TEXT: The Marantz CD5004 supports CD-Text information such as artist name and track titles. The CDs used must also support CD-Text for this feature to work.

MP3/WMA Playback: The CD5004 supports MP3 (32-320 kbps) and WMA (64-160 kbps) audio files that have been recorded onto CD-R or CD-RW discs in ISO9660 mode 1 or mode 2 disc format. The Marantz CD player will recognize up to 255 files and 255 folders on a single disc. The unit will also display MP3/WMA tag data information.

CS4392 High-Performance D/A Converter: The CD5004 uses a Super-Audio CD grade 192kHz/24-bit Cirrus Logic CS4392 D/A converter to provide exceptional sound quality. This high-performance D/A converter is capable of handling high definition audio data streams (DSD and 24-bit/192 kHz PCM signals).

High Performance Audio Grade Capacitors: ELNA Silmic & Cerafine series high-quality film capacitors are used in the audio signal path for superior transient speed and better bass response.

CD Playback Technology: During CD play, the PCM signals recorded on the disc are oversampled to 128fs inside the D/A converter and then processed by a combination of the dynamic element matching (DEM) and multi-element switched capacitors to achieve playback characterized by a high linearity.

HDAM-SA2 (High Definition Amplifier Module): The CD5004 utilizes Marantz's Hyper Dynamic Amplifier Module, or HDAM, at critical analog circuit junctions to insure smooth and ultra-fast signal transfer from one stage to another. Marantz uses HDAMs instead of standard op-amps, to render a more dynamic sound with less susceptibility to radiated noise, heat, and vibration. The unit uses an HDAM-SA2 for high-speed and high-quality sound.

20 Track Music Calendar: A linear music calendar appears at the bottom of the display, and lights up with the number of tracks on the currently selected disc, up to 20. An "arrow" icon indicates the presence of 21 or more tracks. After a track has been played, the number for that track disappears from the calendar display. In addition, the tracks selected during Program Play appear in the music calendar display, and disappear after they are played.

Note: This Music Calendar is only available when playing back Audio CDs.

Auto Standby: With Auto Standby On, you can automatically set this unit to standby mode after the CD player is in stop-mode (no operation) continuously for approximately 30 minutes.

Display On/Off Function:  The CD5004 features a Dot Matrix FL display . The "Display Off" function enables the main unit display to be turned of. By turning off this display, the pulsive noise generated from the display is reduced, thus eliminating its effects on the music signals.

Pitch Control: The "Pitch Control" functions enables the play speed (pitch) to be varied over a +/-12 step. This feature is particularly useful for musical instrument practice sessions. This function is only possible when playing back audio CDs only.

Audio EX Function: The Audio EX mode is provided in order for you to enjoy  high quality sound based on how you have connected the CD5004 to your amplifier. Audio EX bypasses the pitch control, mutes the digital output, and shuts the FL display off completely. With those three potential noise sources eliminated, you'll be able to hear everything just as the artists intended. There are three settings - Off (digital signal is only output when the pitch control setting is 0), EX 1 (offers better overall sound), EX 2 (offers best sound from analog outputs).

Quick Replay Function: By a single-action operation, the "Quick Replay" function enables play to be moved back from the current play position to the time equivalent to the setting (range of 5 to 60 seconds) and play to be resumed. This function makes it possible to return to a part of the track that was just played so it can be heard again.

Note: This functions is only possible when playing audio CDs.

Playback Options: The CD5004 provides the following options for disc playback:

  • Audio CDs:
    • Peak Search: This feature allows you to search for the loudest passage on the disc.
    • Direct Search: Directly enter the track number on the remote control to play the desired track.

the sound is very good [ ALBERT L  Jun 15, 2014 ]
Hi Pete, I'm sorry, but I haven't used the headphone jack on the CD player much at all. It works, and sounds great, but I have not done any extensive listening through headphones. As a component in my system, I couldn't be happier with the player, and would certainly recommend it for similar applications. [ JOHN  Jun 13, 2014 ]
I use the CD5004 to listen to my Sennheiser HD598 headphones and find the results to be quite satisfactory. The headphone volume control on the player is a nice feature. [ JOHN D  Jun 13, 2014 ]
I don't listened through headphones [ PATRICK J  Jun 13, 2014 ]
Unfortunately, I am not using this CD player with headphones so I cannot comment on the quality of that amplifier. I can say that the overall fidelity and musicality of this unit is very, very good and it is able to integrate quite well with other high quality components (separate pre-amps, power amps and expensive speakers). It is an incredible bargain considering the quality audio it produces. [ GABRIEL  Jun 13, 2014 ]
i've been very happy with this cd player, which i purchased simply for use in our kitchen through a set of small book shelf powered speakers, i chose this unit because it has a nice display which allowed me to find certain passsages in music which we rehearsed for the concert band we perform with. another option might be a cd player designed for DJ use.....they tend to have more versatility, but are not as attractive on a shelf. i've never used the cd player through a head phone amp, but the quality of the output is superb, so i can imagine you'd be satisfied. i've purchased through crutchfield over many years,,,,,and the return policy always makes me feel risk free,,,,,if a product doesn't work out. jeff L [ JEFFREY A  Jun 12, 2014 ]
I really liked the ability to listen with headphones, and have volume control. The sound was great--when the player recognized the disc. It recognized less than a quarter of the discs (all commercially-recorded) that I tried. I returned the machine and noticed when I packaged it that the thing had sustained enough of a blow in shipping to damages the inner carton. This is probably what caused my problems. [ Richard  Jun 12, 2014 ]
Sorry, but I use mine joined to a receiver/amplifier and have no idea about how well headphones are handled by the player. I am quite happy with the player as used in my setup. [ MARTIN  Jun 12, 2014 ]
William, this unit is not equipped with speakers. If, however, you are looking for a component CD player that will make a big improvement in your sound, this is the one. I bought it because Stereophile magazine listed it as a Class C recommended component. It replaced a 15 year old Sony player that was highly regarded at the time of purchase. My wife and I are amazed at the improvement in sound. [ BERTWILL E  Jan 24, 2014 ]
It is player and I connected them to an amplifier with 2 speakers. I am watching the one unit which sometimes doe not read disc right away. my daughter reported that she needs to rsest 2-3 times before it will play. [ GREGORIO  Jan 20, 2014 ]
Sorry there are no speakers in this model that I am aware of. You need to also supply a preamp, amp and speakers unless you limit your listening via a set of headphones. Sound quality is excellent. [ Nick  Jan 19, 2014 ]
I bought this Marantz CD5004 from Crutchfield as an Outlet Special (I believe it was a "Scratch & Dent") on 02/15/13. It proved to be defective and I returned it for credit on 03/04/13. [ JOHN D  Jan 18, 2014 ]
No [ PATRICK J  Jan 17, 2014 ]
Y [ RICHARD A  Jan 17, 2014 ]
The Marantz CD5004 unit is a stand alone CD player with no speakers. It has a headphone outlet but no other amplification thus you would need a receiver or something similar to go with a set of speakers. [ Steven  Jan 17, 2014 ]
the cd player has no amp...nor speaker..... [ JEFFREY A  Jan 17, 2014 ]
No speakers. CD player only. [ Charles  Jan 17, 2014 ]
Hello... This unit does not come with speakers if that is what you are asking...not sure if that is what you are getting at Thanks Joe [ JOE  Jan 17, 2014 ]
No, the unit does not have speakers. It is a CD player (transport and electronics only) meant to be connected to a preamplifier/amplifier system, or an integrated amplifier, to which normal stereo speakers are connected. It's a great CD player and I highly recommend it. [ MICHAEL P  Jan 17, 2014 ]
The unit is made to be connected to a receiver or amplifier. Mine is connected to a receiver which in turn is connected to two speakers. [ MARTIN  Jan 17, 2014 ]
No it does not have speakers. It is strictly a CD player and needs to be connected via cables to an amp or receiver with speakers. I am very pleased with its performance. Rob [ ROBERT  Jan 17, 2014 ]
