Imagine having the freedom to move around your room with your iPod, and hearing the music you select through your home audio system. That's what you get with the Marantz IS301 wireless dock. Your iPod rests in a portable Bluetooth® handset that sends audio wirelessly from your player to your system up to 32 feet away. And you can connect the handset to your computer via a USB connection to sync your player.

You can also pair your Bluetooth-enabled mobile phone, PDA, laptop, or other compatible devices with the IS301 for more wireless music options. When you place the handset in its base, you can also enjoy video from your iPod on your TV.

How it works
The IS301 includes an extender that connects to your audio/video receiver and serves as a hub for the system's input. The extender receives Bluetooth audio from the portable handset, as well as your other compatible Bluetooth devices. When you place the handset in the base unit, a wired connection to the extender lets you output video from your iPod. The extender features composite, S-video, and component video outputs so you can make the best possible connection to your TV.

Anticipated surprise.

Honestly, I'm an entry-level audiophile. Facing the facts, I appreciate the detail in audio quality I bring into my home, yet (admittedly) am slightly hard of hearing at 30YO. This only means I pick up on every detail of music. This piece of product by Marantz is incredible. I was a bit hung up on the analog-only input into my Marantz receiver. But, am pleasantly surprised at how well it picks up on the sounds of my iPhone's collection. Much better than the audio jack to analog in that I had previously (which, has me stumped). YES, I'm using it perfectly on the iPhone 4, and can also stream sounds from Youtube, etc., which isn't an expected application. No, no, it doesn't match the sound quality of the discs I play on my Marantz BluRay player; but, let's play a compromise to the facts of versatility. Without wires, I can hold my iPhone and change my music, AND hear quality reproduction (I listen to a lot of classical and pop music). It was worth every cent I paid for it. Just try it; if it doesn't work out for you, return it! Although, I'll be hanging on to this piece with tied fists.

Pros: quality sound reproduction into a Marantz receiver, take-along style without cords, control of my audio volume and inputs to allow the magic.

Cons: only analog (I wish HDMI or at least beyond analog output!)

A step down from the is201

RyanS from Greensboro, NC on 4/16/2011

The Marantz is301 does almost everything you would want. One of the key features that this piece lacks is the ability to impose the menu of the ipod that is currently docked, onto the screen of your entertainment system. A very important feature to have when the dock is tucked away with the rest of your equipment. The is201 worked perfectly, but it seems that the engineers over at marantz decided that this absolutely necessary feature is no longer needed. To replace this feature Marantz has included bluetooth, in the form of a clunky add on to the ipod. The Bluetooth dongle hardly stays attached, and zaps the battery power of the ipod. Removing the perfect feature in order to make room for a severely limited bluetooth dongle. when using the dongle, which almost anyone would be forced too, due to the lack of menu integration on the tv screen, your limited to 30 feet away from the main dock. This in itself is a huge limitation. All in all you end up paying twice as much for is the is301, for half the product compared to the is201.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Set up was simple (after first getting the paring completed) and afterwards it does everything advertised, sending audio from your iPod wirelessly via Bluetooth to the extender which is wired to your receiver. Both audio and video can be done, but the iPod has to be docked in the base unit. It would have been nice if the connection were HDMI instead of component/composite. All in all though, a great product.
