Great Sound!

Rock N Ron from Meriden,CT on 9/21/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Good price on sale not worth MSRP.

Pros: Solid Build. Looks Great. Nice and heavy which means good sound quality. Connects to the internet with hardwire and is always ready to play songs.

Cons: Much to many problems trying to connect to the WI FI going wireless was forced to connect directly hardwire to work.

Amazing quality

Admiral from San Francisco, CA on 6/13/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this for my bedroom and this player has a lot of features and an exceptional quality over Bose. If you're thinking about Bose, as a previous user, you should spend a little more and get Marantz instead. Its so much worth it and plays a very clear sound even at high levels. I was a little disappointed to see older iPhone pins instead of newer ones but I use airplay so I didnt matter to me.

Pros: Sound quality, looks

Cons: Old iphone wire connection is disappointing

Nice sound

Fred W from San Diego, Ca. on 6/9/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

It's really heavy but to me it means that's it's well built. Setup is tedious and time consuming. It's worth it though. The sound is wonderful. Easy to control from my iphone.

Pros: Sound and looks are great. The speakers are high quality. Listening to it is enjoyable.

Cons: Setup requires following the directions carefully on your iphone once you download the app. But it's not to bad.

Great Wifi speaker/radio

Rut T. from Livermore, CA on 5/15/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The Marantz Consolette produces good quality sound. Makes a great Wifi speakers for iPad/iPod where the kids or anyone visiting can access and play music. With both iPhone and Android Apps available, almost any device can control the Consolette. The gloss wood back and solid aluminum panel makes it look and feel audiophile quality. Make sure to upgrade to the latest firmware using the RJ-45 Ethernet cable first. The upgrade instruction is a bit confusing and if the firmware upgrade did not complete successfully, it will causes unstable and intermittent connection with the iPad/iPhone. Recommend to wait till late at night and perform the firmware upgrade. Make sure to monitor the display to be sure all the modules downloads completely to the Consolette and the unit reboots by itself. After a successful firmware upgrade, the unit worked almost flawlessly. I run mine with RJ-45 Ethernet cable only so can not comment on the Wifi connectivity. I don't trust WPA mode.

Pros: High quality look and feel. Sounds pretty good. Convenient control via the supplied classic IR remote or iOS or Android devices. Ability to listen to any Internet station including Europe, Asia etc. With Android app, the present can be re-named. Front panel brightness level can be dim via the Apps.

Cons: After a few weeks of being plugged in...the unit can lockup and may need to be re-booted. This is intermittent so its not consistent. Upgrade instructions needs to be refined a bit. Wifi limited to WPS mode. Would prefer to have WPA2 with passphrase.

Brian B from Minneapolis, MN on 4/15/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The construction and finish of the unit are exceptional. The sound quality is very good, but could use a bit more on the low end. The quick setup guide walks you through the wireless network connection very easily. The Airplay feature is no longer active after the unit enters standby mode (like my Denon reciever) and requires you to turn on the machine and then wait as it goes through an automated 4 step network connection process before it is recognized and ready for use. It is a minor annoyance, but it takes at least a minute from turning the unit on until it is ready to play music via Airplay. The unit is definitely not worth the $1200 msrp, but it is worth the sale price.

Pros: Construction, and sound quality

Cons: Connection speed and the need to reconnect to Airplay prior to each use.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a beautiful piece of entertainment equipment although it seems they placed more attention on the rear of the unit than the front but still very eye pleasing sound quality is great that being said it was very difficult to set up but once you complete the process it proves to be well worth the effort

Pros: Attractive unit with great sound

Cons: A nightmare to setup

Can't be free

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Got this free when I bought Marantz 7701. Gotta love Crutchfield. Being free I wasn't expecting much, but wow this is a beautiful piece. It sounds great and looks very good.

Pros: Beautiful looks and sound

Cons: Wifi drops out sometimes. I hooked it up to Ethernet and it's works perfect.

Large but excellent dock

Dan from New Haven, CT on 1/2/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I received this free with an order of other Marantz equipment, and it promptly replaced my Bluetooth-based Bose SoundDock 10 in my home office. The Marantz is better looking, made from higher quality materials, and with AirPlay and its own iPhone app it works better with my Apple equipment. Both seem to be approximately equally powerful, but the Marantz is more neutral sounding whereas the SoundDock has the typical Bose sound of accentuated highs and lows. The remote is actually more stylish and beefy than the one that came with the high-end Marantz AV processor that the Consolette accompanied. The only disadvantages to the Marantz are that it takes up a fair amount of table space and it has an old 30-pin Apple connector rather than the new Lightning interface--but I use AirPlay all the time anyway. Also, this is really nitpicking, but I can't find a way to keep the useful digital clock displayed when the unit is off. Overall, a nice high-end sound dock and well worth what I paid for it.

Pros: Excellent sound, nicely built with a hefty remote, supports AirPlay as well as physical docking and line in.

Cons: Old 30-pin style Apple dock. Takes up a lot of tabletop space. Only displays time when unit is on.

Beauty and the Beast

plwyman from Davis, CA on 12/23/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

First just let me say this unit is drop dead gorgeous. It also sounds better than expected. It fills a moderately-sized room with full balanced sound. All the hype is true. Since I don't own an iOS device, however, I'm using the RCA inputs to connect my Logitech Touch. This accomplishes most of the streaming functions as a work around. It was fine by me. I then purchased a second Consolette for a relative. She has an iPhone. She says it sounds great playing her music and streaming through her 5S phone. But like me, she can't seem to connect. Here's the rub. It took me 24 hours to upgrade the firmware and get this unit to actually play. I'm old but pretty tech savy so this had me pulling my hair out. My niece has spent over a week trying to connect her router and iPhone with the app. No luck. She's followed the CD ROM instructions. She's factory reset the unit numerous times. It's all still a mystery even with three generations at work. So, as a boombox or docking station this unit is simply amazing. Some users have even figured out how to get it to stream. I wish they would blog their caveats, however, since there seems to be a missing step in the manual or an instruction that's easily misinterpreted. I'm sure there's a key to unlocking the potential of the design. We just haven't found it yet. Even so, some report the app as being less-than-stellar once they do connect. Three stars for function. Five for sound and looks. Four, overall.

Pros: Great sound, amazing design. It's mid-century modern with 21st century technology.

Cons: Can't seem to connect. They say this is a versatile unit for linking to iOS devices, Android, or a PC. No success for us with any of these, however. Requires adapter for newer iPhones and tablets.

excellent range the quality is second to none. price is on the high end as compared to similar products.

Pros: Crisp clean sound at both high and lower volume. Attractive and compact. Respectable warranty length. Great Crutchfield reps available to answer any questions.

Cons: Takes some time to learn the set up given there is minimal instructions included. Requires a adapter to play ipod nano which is a pain.

Sound , design and build quality.

Oscar from FL on 9/26/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Consolette has a very good sound and effective combination of shapes and materials. Admire voice clarity and detail, bass, sounds smooth and deep. But sophisticated music, regardless of genre, do not sound so pure and controlled as it should be . Consolette plays loud and much more efficiently fills a large room than its closest competitors . Additional features are DLNA to play songs over the network and Internet radio that allows you to listen to a huge number of FM radio stations from around the world. Customize Consolette with the application is not very easy. Covers displayed in extremely poor quality , and there is no convenient search functions and favorite lists. The software needs to be fixed . Additional features not fully implemented - in particular , music, high-definition broadcast on the network will not work , in addition, DLNA support allows users to devices running Android send a saved music from your phone to Consolette, but does not allow the application to broadcast the tracks. Can not see the folders on the USB- connected storage device. Overall, very pleased with this purchase.

Pros: Clean and detailed sound , many features in addition to AirPlay.

Cons: Not very easy to set up. Inconvenient phone application.

Very impressive

Abuzer from St. Louis, MO on 9/2/2013

Here is my experience with the Consolette after two days of ownership: I put it in our home office where our wireless router is located so AirPlay is working without losing a beat. The free Marantz App is good enough. It could react a little faster and the Internet Radio does not keep your recent radio stations apart from the 6 presets. The sound quality is very impressive. It can get very loud with little, if any, distortion. I also tried Sonos Play 5 and B&W Zeppelin Air before purchasing the Consolette. The Consolette definitely looks/sounds/functions better than the other two. I have not tried B&W A7, which I think more comparable to Consolette. With the current price of $600, the Consolette is like a bargain compared to $800 A7. In summary, I do not think Consolette is worth the original MSRP of $1,200, but it is a great unit for $600.

Pros: Great sound Better looking than the competition No problems with AirPlay

Cons: It took sometime to connect it to my network wirelessly. I ended up using Ethernet cable to complete set up.

Cheaper models aren't worse

utekai from Chicago, IL on 6/30/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Got this with the Denon Cocoon and B&W A7. Kept only the A7. The consolette is well built, was easy to setup and use and looks great. The back looks much classier than the front, perhaps a classic mistake. Sitting in the middle of the room on a table it may look ok, but generally you look at the front but paid for the back ... the mistake. Compared to the Cocoon, the two are very equal. One is Denon and one Marantz but it must be the same company designing, building and packaging these two. The Denon has a louder base. The Consolette sounds great. The two suffer from being high on specs but low on musicality. What do I mean be musicality? The ability to listen for long periods of time and not want to just turn it off or turn it down. The A7 has great musicality. Once you listen to it alongside the consolette and cocoon, you want to turn off the consolette and cocoon. Though the At has it's own brought frustrations due to poor setup instructions.

Pros: Looks nice. Has great specs. Well built. Sounds great.

Cons: Lacks an overall musicality. Yes, it's playing back the music, but somehow not in a pleasing way. It may be playing back the music very accurately, but somehow must not in a way pleasing to the ear. After a while, just wanted to turn it off or turn it down. The best looking part is the back, which generally is hidden, what a fantastically well-built MISTAKE in marketing play. Look at the brochure, you will see the back is the best looking part.

Pure Perfection

LawrenceW from Jersey City, NJ on 3/17/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I fell in love with the Consolette the momemt I saw it on the Crutchfield Website but I was a bit timid because of the price. After several internal conversations I decided to go for it. I am glad I did. Not only is it aesthetically pleasing but the sound quality is very impressive. This is an audiophiles dream. I love it so much that I purchase the white and the black. I had a New Year's Eve party and my friends could not believe the sound that was coming out of the Consolette. I was able to use the AirPlay to access music on my iPhone as well as access my wireless network via the builtin Wi-Fi connection. Because of its sleek design, I have it displayed like a work of art. I love the fact that the docking station retracts for a seamless look. However, don't let the museum quality design let you think that the Consolette is just another pretty sound dock. I can go from listening to classical vocals to jazz instrumental without losing any of the nuance. It picks up the highs and lows without sacrificing the sweetness in the middle. Perfect for any room in the house.

Pros: Impressive sound quality Great design Retractable docking station AirPlay Ethernet/Wi-fi

Cons: The price is a bit of a sticker shock but I would not let that stop me from purchasing the Consolette.

Hi Darren, Yes I think it would work yes. It has RCA jacks in the back and USB so I'm guessing you can wire it direct to computer. You may plan to simply use wireless capabilities which, while not easy to use, should be good. The male end of the docking station is iPhone 4 or earlier, and we've never been able to get a converter to work, so I caution you with that. Sound is pretty darn good, but intuitive nature is pretty poor. best of luck, KEvin [ KEVIN C  Jul 19, 2014 ]
it works perfect for this application [ JAMES  Jul 19, 2014 ]
Hi Darren, I don't move my consolette around. I guess you could, but it is such a nice system, I keep it in a central spot of my house and use it there. I am lucky and have an open floor plan and I can listen to it in my kitchen, living room, the loft(my office) and my front porch(with the windows open). The only hassle of moving it would be disconnecting and reconnecting the power cord and the ethernet cable(if you didn't use wireless). If you used wireless, hopefully it would be a good signal. When you lift the unit you can tell it was made with quality, and the sound it produces surprised me even for Marantz. It really does produce excellent sound. I am very comfortable with computers and electronics, but the configuration(especially getting wireless) configured was a challenging puzzle. The instructions say to use the Marantz Consolette App on Apple, but the App Store won't list it in a search. I found it though on a Google search and it linked me to the App in the Apple store. I found it funny google was able to find the link for the app in the Apple store that Apple couldn't find. It is essential to get that App to complete the config. Good luck and I hope that you enjoy it. I love mine. [ JEFFREY  Jul 19, 2014 ]
The sound would be wonderful on your PC and streaming music.. It's so heavy that I think it would get cumbersome to move it back and forth. Give it a try because the unit sounds great. Good luck. [ FRED  Jul 19, 2014 ]
Darren, Probably. It weighs about 25 pounds, so although you can move it, it is not a simple pick up and carry item. It is also rather large, so unless you have a really big desk, it wouldn't fit in the right place easily to use as a PC speaker system. All that said, though, it is a GREAT sounding room stereo.
